SPIRIT DAYS

Greetings Everyone, The beginning of 2015 has already brought substantial change to us as we became the Division of Enrollment and Student Affairs in January. I would like to extend a warm welcome to the offices of Student Financial Aid, Academic Admissions, and Military and Veterans Services.

So that we can convey our pride in GRU, the Division of Enrollment and Student Affairs has developed a practice allowing for more casual clothing to be worn on Fridays for Spirit Days. On Spirit Days, officeacceptable jeans are allowed to be worn if a GRU shirt is worn with them.

Through the hard work and dedication of our staff during the Fall semester, we have been able to grow as a team that is better able to serve the needs of our students. I am confident that we will continue this growth throughout the remainder of the year.

The GRU Division of Enrollment and Student Affairs prides itself on the professional atmosphere it maintains and the positive image that employees present as representatives of GRU. Spirit Day attire must remain appropriate for the environment, and should reflect professionalism of staff. In the case of professional meetings on Spirit Days, employees should dress in normal business attire.

Please don’t forget that our 2014-15 Year in Review celebration will be held on Monday, March 11, 2015 from 3-5 pm. Mark Allen Poisel, Ed.D. Vice President for Enrollment and Student Affairs

Dress regulations are to be monitored by the supervisor, whose responsibility is to counsel employees regarding appropriate dress and appearance in general.

EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT A committee is being formed that will focus on the development of a number of initiatives that will enhance employee engagement across the division. Starting in March, we will begin hosting regular Employee Recognition Breakfasts. More information will be coming soon. Employees are also invited to attend Lessons from Disney: Customer Service Tips to Attract and Keep Students on February 18 from 1-2:15 pm in the Butler meeting room.

HOUSING AND THE WELLNESS CENTER We are in the process of working with the University System of Georgia to add more university housing. Demolition will begin in late May of Residence V, located behind the Wellness Center on the Health Sciences Campus. In its place will be a new student housing complex with more than 700 beds, which will open in Fall of 2016. The first phase of student housing will be 712 beds, 404 for undergraduates and 308 for graduate students. The Wellness Center had a grand opening celebration on January 30. The event was a great success with free massages and food provided to the approximately 1,000 attendees. Feel free to stop by and check out the updated facilities.

A CLOSER LOOK AT COUNSELING

SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS

The Counseling Center is well known for its main function – providing free, confidential counseling to GRU students. However, students may not be aware of the numerous outreach activities offered by the Counseling Center throughout the year. The Counseling Center is currently involved in numerous outreach activities. For example, in addition to offering a variety of seminars each semester (including summer sessions) they take part in a number of on-campus activities as well as coordinate major events. All Counseling Center staff are involved in these activities at some point in the semester, whether it be presenting on a psycho-educational topic to a class or training student leaders on mental health needs of students. Outreach has become such an important part of the Counseling Center’s mission that for the past few years we have utilized a graduate assistant to supplement the counselors’ outreach efforts. The current graduate assistant, Yanuary Rodriguez, develops and delivers seminars, presents to classes per instructor request, and represents the Counseling Center at many on-campus events. Students play an integral part in the continuation and success of these events, therefore the Counseling Center staff ask that GRU faculty and staff encourage students to attend, participate, and/or volunteer in Counseling Center-sponsored events. Student involvement in these events has several potential benefits. First, involvement in outreach activities creates awareness of important topics such as interpersonal violence. Additionally, these activities have the potential to motivate students to become involved in additional outreach activities in the community. Finally, a seminar or lecture may reach a student (or students) who never would have considered attending counseling. The Counseling Center thanks you, in advance, for collaborating with us and promoting our events.
