LETTER FROM TH
A message from the president Every five years, Davenport University sets a strategic plan that pushes us to look at the future and create initiatives that drive us forward. These initiatives are how we achieve our mission of helping students prepare for the world’s fastest-growing careers. As we get ready to close the book on the strategic plan for 2020, and I wrap up my 10th year as president, I’m incredibly proud of all that we have achieved during this time, as a community and as an institution. In fact, in this special edition of DU Review, you’ll learn about some of the major accomplishments we’ve achieved over the past decade as well as some recent accomplishments from this year. For instance, the last decade has seen Davenport launch our first online-only degree programs; open campuses in As we work to create downtown Lansing, our Vision 2025, we Detroit and Grand Rapids; create the will continue our focus College of Urban on preparing students Education; build the for the world’s fastest- Donald W. M THE PRESIDENT
quality education and research-backed degree programs.
In July, we became full members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II (NCAA DII). As full NCAA DII members, our student-athletes, coaches and 22 sports teams are eligible to compete in postseason championship play. They are also eligible to win national honors and awards. This year, Davenport began offering classes at the new Detroit campus. We also launched our Corporate Education Scholarship (CES) program and worked with companies across Michigan to address the growing talent gap. Through CES, the employees of partners like DTE Energy, Mercantile Bank and TEAM Schostak Family Restaurants can earn a degree through Davenport University at a reduced cost.

More recently, Davenport received a five-year, $4 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to train and educate the nation’s next generation of cybersecurity experts as part of the CyberCorps: Scholarship for Service program. We also have nine new scholarships to offer through the Alumni Foundation. This is on top of the more than $1 million in scholarships we were able to award 470 students in the 2018–19 academic year — all thanks to our donors and the hard work of Davenport’s faculty and staff. As we look to create and carry out our Vision 2025, we will continue our focus on preparing students for the world’s fastest-growing careers through quality education and researchbacked degree programs. You will also see a continuation of our commitment to innovation and transformation. Thank you for your support of Davenport University and our students during the 2018–19 academic year. You are a critical component to the achievement of our institution’s and students’ goals. We have come this far in such a short time with the help of your generosity. Sincerely,
Richard J. Pappas, Ed.D. President

T H E L E AV E S A R E S TA R T I N G T O C H A N G E , AND THERE’S A WELCOME CHILL TO THE AIR. Panther fans tailgate in the parking lot of Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex, sporting their red-and-blacks, anticipating the day’s game. It kicks off and Panther fans are fired up. Because, this year, the game means even more. This year, the Panthers are competing for a spot in the NCAA DII postseason championships. And it’s not just a football championship they’re after. As of September 1, Davenport officially became home to 22 NCAA-sponsored sports teams — all with a chance to make their mark. With more than 560 studentathletes enrolled annually, the benefits of NCAA membership will be felt across the Panther pride. Not only are Davenport’s student-athletes now eligible to compete in national championships, they can also receive national awards, honors and other association benefits. Coaches and teams are eligible as well.
7 | DU Review
“We’re excited about the future of Davenport University Athletics and the benefits NCAA DII membership will afford our student-athletes and institution,” said Paul Lowden, executive director of intercollegiate athletics.
Since joining the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) in 2017, Davenport’s men’s basketball team won a regular season title (2018–19), and its men’s soccer team won a tournament title (2017).
As a member of NCAA DII, Davenport’s commitment to the academic and athletic achievements of all studentathletes will remain a top priority.
“Davenport teams have proved from the beginning that they are competitive at the DII level,” said Kris Dunbar, commissioner at Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. “They will continue to set high standards as full NCAA Division II members.”
“Whether they’re in the classroom or in competition, our student-athletes are held to the highest standards,” said Dr. Richard J. Pappas, president of Davenport University. “And we ensure they have the support they need to succeed.” Davenport’s commitment to the academic success of its student-athletes is no secret. Over the last two seasons, seven of Davenport’s studentathletes received All-GLIAC top honors and 467 student-athletes received All-Academic honors.

Occupational therapy students pay it forward with creation of a sensory room for local school
Students at Grand Rapids Child Discovery Center (GRCDC) now have a place to escape from the sensory overload of a busy school day. Dimly lit with soothing gray-blue walls and filled with fun equipment like a pod swing, sound machine, resistance tunnel and fidget toys, GRCDC’s new sensory room provides a safe and calming environment for students to explore and interact with their surroundings.
FEATU OT STUDENTS PAY
Once primarily used to help students with autism spectrum disorder or sensory processing disorder, sensory rooms have become increasingly mainstream due to the benefits they offer to all students. Sensory rooms can help students develop and engage their senses, calm down and foster skills, such as creativity and concentration.

Fall 2019
“Many of our students have specific sensory needs and all people have needs for sensory input,” said GRCDC superintendent Lisa Heyne. “Having this amazing resource right in our school will allow staff to support students in caring for their minds and bodies while helping them become calmer and more focused in the classroom.” The sensory room was funded and built by 39 student volunteers from Davenport University’s Student Occupational Therapy Association (SOTA). SOTA is a student-run organization that serves to promote professional development of occupational therapy (OT) students through educational events, volunteering, leadership opportunities and giving back to the community. “As occupational therapists, we know that sensory integration and regulation impact everything we do in our lives,” said Davenport student and SOTA member Tracy Mason.
ATURE PAY IT FORWARD
“By providing education about these topics and a space to practice sensory regulation strategies, students have an increased likelihood of succeeding in and out of the classroom.” To raise funds for the sensory room, SOTA volunteers sold Biggby Coffee coupon cards through a partnership with Adrenaline Fundraising of Michigan. Through their efforts, they raised over $3,600. With these funds and additional in-kind donations, volunteers purchased paint, flooring, decor and furniture as well as the sensory equipment and educational materials needed for the project. They then commissioned a muralist to give the room a sea life theme that included GRCDC’s narwhal logo and started putting the room together.
“Our new sensory room never could have happened without the work and dedication of the occupational therapy students from Davenport,” said Heyne. This project aligned perfectly with the purpose of SOTA, leaving a lasting impact on the local community. Now, elementary students at GRCDC will have a safe place to calm their minds when sensory overload strikes.

The United States has seen an 11% increase in cybersecurity breaches over the last year, according to the 2019 Cybercrime Study conducted by Accenture. At the same time, an estimated 300,000 cybersecurity jobs are predicted to remain unfilled due to a “very low” supply of cybersecurity talent across the country (CyberSeek). Davenport University has been addressing the growing need for cybersecurity talent for over a decade. With 11 technology degrees spanning from cyber defense to network and information security, the university is at the forefront of training and preparing its graduates for careers in cybersecurity. In 2011, the university was designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security. Davenport is one of only nine schools in Michigan to hold this designation. In addition, the university is one of only 16 institutions in the nation to be recognized as a Center of Digital Forensics Academic Excellence by the Department of Defense Cyber Crime Center.
ATURE NSF TECH GRANT
Davenport’s renowned degree programs and continued effort to train cybersecurity professionals have earned the university a fiveyear, $4 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to train the nation’s next generation of cybersecurity experts.
The grant is part of NSF’s CyberCorps: Scholarship for Service (SFS) program. The program provides full-tuition scholarships and additional monies for living expenses for students studying cybersecurity at the undergraduate and graduate level. After graduation, recipients enter a full-time cybersecurity role at a government entity, where they provide service in return for funding received. “With a large number of open positions and increased security concerns, the need to strengthen and address the cybersecurity talent pipeline is more important than ever,” said Dr. Richard Pappas, president of Davenport University. “This grant validates the quality of education Davenport University provides and the confidence the federal government has in our ability to deliver the talent needed to address one of our nation’s most pressing issues in cybersecurity.” With this $4 million in funding, 28 students will receive full-ride scholarships and funding to cover all education-related fees as well as living expenses. Juniors and seniors seeking a degree from Davenport University’s College of Technology, as well as sophomores from Grand Rapids Community College who will transition to Davenport to complete their bachelor’s degree, are eligible to receive these scholarships.
who are looking to pursue a career in cybersecurity. The recipients will also travel to a national cybersecurity conference and complete a paid summer internship with a federal, state, local or tribal government organization to further their learning in the cybersecurity field. “Programs like this, that support students in their career and educational pathways, lend a great hand to helping reach our goal of 60% of Michigan high school graduates earning a credential or degree after high school by 2030,” said Doug Ross, Governor Whitmer's advisor on economic prosperity.
“When students are supported on a path to earn these credentials, employers gain a highly skilled talent pool to fill the 545,000 jobs coming open through 2026, and the state grows closer to filling the skills gap — it’s a win-win.” To apply or learn more about the NSF grant, visit davenport.edu/sfs
As part of the program, scholarship recipients will pay it forward by mentoring local high school students

PAY IT FORWARD A gift to spark a charitable movement
“ When you learn, teach. When you get, give.”
— Maya Angelou
Most of us know the premise of pay it forward — it’s to start a positive movement with one gesture. What’s incredible is that we continue to see Davenport graduates pay it forward in their daily lives and through the leadership they provide in their communities, just as Angelou taught. “Wouldn’t we all want the opportunity to give back in some way to our alma mater if given the chance?” asked Keith Klingenberg, president and principal for TrueNorth Insurance and 1971 Davenport graduate. “I can’t tell you how much the saying rings true — ‘Make a living, make a life, make a contribution.’ It’s coming full circle and showing your appreciation to the university that gave you the tools to become the success you are today.” And that’s why Klingenberg decided to pay it forward to the class of 2019 by making a donation to Davenport on behalf of each graduate. “Keith is a perfect example of a person who incorporates Davenport’s teachings into their everyday life, and when afforded the opportunity, gives back to their alma mater,” said Davenport University president
17 | DU Review
Dr. Richard J. Pappas. “Whether it be through board involvement, campaign giving or creating scholarships for students, Keith and his wife, Kathy, have always been there for Davenport.” Due to Klingenberg’s generosity, 1,200 graduates were credited with their first donation to Davenport University’s general scholarship fund. With this gift, the Klingenbergs hope to inspire a culture of giving within the 2019 graduating class. A culture that finds itself paying it forward with gestures of giving or volunteering that support Davenport University students.
FEATU KEITH KLING
“It’s important to me and my wife that our gift on behalf of the graduating students will serve as an example of the joy you can feel by giving back. You don’t have to give monetarily — you can give your time by volunteering or getting involved with the Alumni Association,” said Klingenberg. “This is our way of paying it forward, and we hope that it motivates this year’s graduates to do the same.” Klingenberg is one of Davenport University’s biggest fans. He serves as the president of the Alumni Board of Directors, sits on the selection committee for the annual Alumni Awards, has created the Keith and Kathryn Klingenberg Endowed Scholarship, the TrueNorth Endowed Scholarship and the Entrepreneurial Endowed Scholarship. Klingenberg has also supported Davenport’s many capital campaigns including Investing in the Vision.
Fall 2019
ATURE LINGENBERG Keith Klingenberg speaks to 2019 graduates at Davenport’s commencement ceremony on April 28, 2019, at Van Andel Arena.
“Davenport’s mission of preparing students for real life and offering experiences both in the classroom and through internships is in sync with what students need to be successful in today’s workplace,” said Klingenberg. “I also see the caliber of Davenport grads out in the workforce. I’m always running into Davenport alumni, and they have nothing but good things to say about the education they received.”
“Davenport gave me the foundation I needed to begin my career; it gave me the tools to succeed. I am forever grateful to the instructors for the real-life experiences they shared with us,” said Klingenberg. “It’s why I continue to support Davenport’s work, and I hope to inspire others to do the same.”
Klingenberg used his Davenport degree to launch his career in the logistics and transportation industry in 1985. He now serves as the president and principal for TrueNorth Insurance in Michigan. Prior to TrueNorth, he served as the co-founder, president and CEO of Total Logistics Control. Klingenberg also serves on numerous advisory boards and committees in the transportation and insurance sectors.
