We’re back

A record number of students moved into housing on the W.A. Lettinga campus this fall.

A message from the president Addressing barriers in education There is so much about fall that signals excitement, and that is incredibly apparent on our campuses. We just moved in the largest number of residents in our history onto our W.A. Lettinga Grand Rapids Campus, and we are celebrating positive enrollment growth for our university. Our vision and mission to be a renowned quality institution of higher education that prepares and transforms students to achieve and excel in their careers is resonating and inspiring. Yes, we have much to celebrate.

We are grateful that Davenport’s vision inspires support from our greater community. Many of you have become involved with our ELEVATE Campaign, which is an ambitious multi-year campaign dedicated to securing resources for our students, and attended our Excellence in Business event featuring golf great Jack Nicklaus. You will see a recap of that wonderful night, which included honoring Dr. Jacqueline Taylor with the Peter C. Cook Excellence in Business Award.

University life is enriching in the classroom and also outside of it. Our fall sports got off to a great start, and we have expanded some of our varsity sports. You can read about a NASA scientist who made a dramatic career switch, came to Davenport, and is now the first full-time women’s ultimate Frisbee coach in the country. Davenport is full of true and inspiring stories. Thank you for being a part of making them possible and for enriching the fall season and our collective future in remarkable ways. Sincerely,

Richard J. Pappas, Ed.D. President DU Review

Also in this issue, you’ll read about two mental health programs that are new this Fall Semester and the direct result of the Klingenberg family providing necessary resources. The master’s degrees in psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner and in mental health

counseling are both seeing enrollments above our targets. Employers throughout the state are waiting to hire and promote these students when they graduate.

Davenport | 2

We are living out our stated mission as we move through our plan for the future: Vision 2025. On the pages of DU Review, you can see the vision coming to life. You will read about the custom programs we have created and grown to reach all students, regardless of their backgrounds, circumstances or socioeconomic status. When you hear from alumni like Yamaka Bracey, who has a master’s degree from our College of Urban Education, how Davenport and its classes, faculty and approach fed her passion to be the best educator in an urban district, you will be moved and know her students are in good hands. The effects of our university grow wider through all the students we touch, and all whom they touch, and so on. What an awesome responsibility and privilege.

This year’s Excellence in Business Gala featured golf legend Jack Nicklaus, who is considered the greatest champion in golf history. He sat down with Davenport President Richard J. Pappas for an exclusive discussion about his career as a professional golfer and renowned golf course designer.

During the conversation, Nicklaus, a multiple sport athlete in his youth, explained what led him to gravitate exclusively toward golf and how that decision shaped his life. He reminisced about how longtime friend and rival Arnold Palmer took him under his wing when he first arrived on the golf scene, and how they became great friends despite being fierce competitors. Nicklaus talked about his work as a golf course designer, his incredible success on the golf course and the role his lucky yellow shirt played in his 1986 comeback when he won the Masters.

Davenport University launches ing

k a e r b r barrie ultimate program

Davenport | 9

Story by Cindy Kamerad Davenport University has embarked on an exciting new journey in collegiate athletics with the introduction of its men’s and women’s ultimate programs. Spearheaded by an experienced coaching staff, this initiative has the potential to revolutionize the landscape of ultimate (formerly ultimate Frisbee) in the collegiate sphere. “Ultimate is a sport that’s taking off across the country right now, and we’re excited to be the first university in Michigan to offer a women’s team,” said Paul Lowden, executive director of Athletics. “Recruiting is underway and exhibition games are taking place this fall. We encourage everyone to come out and view the sport.” Ultimate is a noncontact, selfrefereed team sport. It is often described as a combination of soccer and basketball. It is played with a Frisbee on a football-like field with the goal of throwing the disc to someone standing in the end zone for a goal. USA Ultimate, the national governing body, offers a college division with more than 18,000 studentathletes competing on more than 800 teams.

DU Review

Davenport will compete against men’s and women’s teams across the nation as well as locally, including Grand Valley State University, Michigan State University, Western Michigan University and the University of Michigan. Ultimate was introduced to Davenport’s athletics department initially by a student. This student, who has a passion for the sport, introduced Lowden to Mike Zaagman, owner of Zig Zag Ultimate, an organization that provides team competition in ultimate for players of all ages. Zaagman later became the program’s full-time head coach. “Mike helped me better understand ultimate as a sport, but more importantly, the resources needed to develop it as

g

a collegiate athletic program,” said Lowden. “Ultimate took a backseat when the pandemic hit, but once we moved away from COVID-19, Mike and I reconnected and started to put together the makings of a proforma. This proforma was used as a guideline to put an official strategic initiative together to add ultimate to the plethora of athletic programs Davenport currently offers.” Zaagman was hired in November 2022 and began establishing the current teams — both men and women — for the 2023-24 academic year. He recruited Jessica Creamer to his staff in July 2023, making her the first full-time collegiate women’s ultimate coach in the U.S. “Davenport is leading the way as the first university to fully embrace ultimate,” said Zaagman. “While some others might have bits and pieces of what we offer, none can match our all-inclusive approach. We provide a complete package that includes athletic scholarships, full-time coaches, top-notch team gear and so much more. I am humbled and grateful to be a part of this program.”

“We have an incredible group of women committed for the fall, and we are just starting to get practices off the ground. Plus, through online recruiting efforts, we’ve connected with five players from Kenya who will hopefully be joining our women’s team this spring,” said Creamer. “It’s a sport almost anyone can play, especially athletes with soccer or basketball experience, and it’s incredibly fun to watch.” This fall, Creamer and the current women’s team hosted numerous community learn-to-play events, exposing both potential players and fans to the sport.

For more information, visit dupanthers.com/ sports/ultimate-frisbee.

Creamer’s journey into the world of ultimate started in her hometown of Tucson, Arizona, where she fell in love with the sport during high school. With a background in soccer, she found the transition to ultimate remarkably smooth due to the similarities between the two sports. While obtaining her undergraduate degree in chemistry at Northern Arizona University, Creamer established and captained the women’s ultimate team. She then went on to serve as head coach for the women’s club team at the University of Kansas for one year while she earned her master’s, before going on to get her doctorate degree in pharmaceutical chemistry. During her graduate work, she devised methods to secure pharmaceutical supply chains by creating analytical methods for portable instrumentation that could be used in developing countries where resources are limited. After graduating, she moved to California to work with NASA, finding that the space program had connections to her previous work. While at NASA, though, her passion for ultimate didn’t wane. She continued to play, and established and still co-owns Los Angeles Astra, a professional ultimate team. Then, in the spring of 2023, Creamer made a significant career shift — she joined Davenport, becoming the first full-time woman ultimate coach at the university level in the United States. “For now, science is paused,” said Creamer. “I love science. I love research. I’ve sort of turned that to Frisbee, and I’m excited to bring a more rigorous, analytical approach to this sport. I’m thrilled to be a part of a new chapter in ultimate history.” DU Review

Ryan McCosky, director of Non-Varsity Sports and Programming, said: “Our goal is for our athletes — and our fans — to have a great experience here at DU. Ultimate is an exciting addition to our sports lineup.”

Jessica Creamer’s career has run parallel paths — one within the world of science and technology as a technologist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the second focusing on the development of women’s ultimate.

Davenport | 10

As the newly appointed overseer of the women’s program, Creamer brings an impressive track record of advancing the sport. Her focus is on both growing the women’s team of recruits and building awareness and support for ultimate in the Davenport and West Michigan communities.

Catching everyone: College of Urban Education’s unique mission changes lives Story by Mary Eilleen Lyon Davenport University is the only university in Michigan to offer degrees from a college dedicated entirely to urban education. Yamaka Bracey

“What got me was the title itself, ‘urban education,’” Davenport College of Urban Education alumna Yamaka Bracey ’16 said. “Coming from an urban district and living in an urban environment, I just wanted more. How much deeper can you

DU Review

go with this?”

Bracey is a product of urban education, having attended Grand Rapids Public Schools (GRPS), and that is exactly where she wants to be. She pursued her master’s degree in urban education at Davenport University while working as a teacher in the district. “The class sizes were just right, and they were very detailed and hands-on,” Bracey said. It gave me the tools I needed. It gave me opportunities that I may not have had if I had not had the courses that helped me think deeper, that pushed me to work harder, that encouraged me to think out of the box.” Bracey’s passion for educating and guiding students, whom she affectionately calls “babies,” is evident to anyone watching her work. As she easily makes her way through the halls of Campus Elementary on the city’s southeast side, where she is in her fifth year as principal, she alternately calls out to some students and hugs others. This is her place. “Davenport’s urban education program allows you to deepen your understanding of the urban world,” Bracey said. “It’s not just about going in and helping. It’s really about looking at the student as a whole, and looking at their family, and making a difference the best way you possibly can.” Davenport has had a unique focus on urban education since beginning the CUE in 2013, providing current and aspiring educators with culturally responsive practices that can be immediately used in schools and with families. The CUE has a distinctive weekly coaching and mentoring model for its undergraduate and graduate students that readies them for the intense work in classrooms, especially ones filled with students who often have complex economic and family dynamics. “When we focus on urban students, we end up catching everyone,” CUE Associate Dean Rhonda White explained. “When you take the time to understand each student, you reach urban, rural and suburban students. It’s just good teaching.” And the state of Michigan is in need of good teaching. A concerning shortage of those entering the teaching profession has gotten the attention of the state legislature. This summer, lawmakers approved $66.4 million in funding for a consortium called “Talent Together.” Davenport is one of nine colleges and universities across the state that are part of this push to get talented teachers in

Features

K-12 classrooms. The influx of financial support is working. During late summer, enrollment in the CUE graduate program saw an uptick, with more than 120 new students enrolling. The undergraduate program is seeing a steady increase. Davenport has been busy with its own efforts to address the teacher shortage, especially in STEM areas. The university has signed scholarship programs with school districts around the state. Through its Urban Education Partner School Program, the university provides scholarships for both undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees that will lead to teaching STEM courses in urban districts. White has seen how Davenport’s program changes not only the lives of students, but also the lives of the teachers who earn degrees in urban education. “There’s a huge reward for teachers,” White said. “There is nothing like teaching a group of students and seeing that you have made a major impact.” Bracey knows she is making an impact. Before finding her career, Bracey found challenges - lots of challenges. She had five children and was working desperately to make a better life for her family by getting a college degree. While her family gave her support and motivation, she more than understands the urban environment and the family systems that are often so strained that children need more support from their schools. “I share the experience and lifestyle of many of my parents, whether it’s struggling at home, not having enough food; whether it’s being on the welfare system and trying to get off; whether it’s trying to make a difference and feeling like you’re stuck – I can relate,” Bracey emphasized. “I’m not afraid or ashamed to tell my story. It’s not perfect, but I’m here, and I’ve overcome a lot of obstacles. I want to be that example for my parents, my families and my students.”

Bracey said her passion for education is a fire within her.

Bracey understands her students and families so well that she has been promoted through the GRPS system and been honored with the university’s College of Urban Education Alumni Award. Associate Department Chair Meaghan Polega nominated Bracey. “As a school leader, Yamaka exemplifies what the College of Urban Education is all about, helping urban students reach their fullest potential,” Polega said. “She has a commitment to students on the southeast side of Grand Rapids, and she wants them to be successful in whatever they do.” “That’s a fire that will never go out,” Bracey said. “Every fire needs to be fed, and that’s what Davenport did for me. They fed my fire a little bit more. Each class gave me a little bit more desire. Each class gave me a feeling of keep going, don’t quit. And when that fire felt like it was dimming, I had strong support from my instructors and from my classmates from GRPS. “What it means for me is taking that chance to look at the whole child, and every opportunity that you get, to change the world one day at a time.”

Klingenberg donation addresses mental health needs and programs

Davenport | 17

Alumnus Keith Klingenberg, CEO and founder of Presidio Insurance Solutions, an Acrisure Agency partner, and his wife, Kathy, gifted the university $1 million in early 2023 to address mental health needs through both curriculum additions and student counseling services. “We are incredibly grateful for the ongoing support of Keith Klingenberg and his family,” said Dr. Richard J. Pappas, president of Davenport University. “It’s gifts such as this that move Davenport forward, allowing us to develop new academic programs as well as solutions to the multitude of challenges students may face in their academic journey, whether financial, social, mental or physical.” The Klingenberg family’s gift enabled the launch of two new mental health degrees, the Master of Arts in mental health counseling and the Master of Science in nursing with a concentration in psychiatric mental health nursing. The university’s New Wellness Center on Davenport’s W.A. Lettinga Campus in Grand Rapids houses a new mental wellness space that was made possible by the generosity of the Klingenberg family. The Wellness Center, which opened this year, offers students both physical and mental health services and employs two mental health counselors and a parttime nurse. The center provides in-person support to students on the W.A. Lettinga Campus and online support for students from across the state.

Story by Cindy Kamerad

W

hen developing new curriculum, Davenport leadership considers various factors, most prominent being fulfilling a community need and the degree’s ability to lead students toward a successful career. Davenport’s two most recent mental health-related degrees do just that.

This fall Davenport launched the Master of Arts in mental health counseling and the Master of Science in nursing with a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner concentration, and each has seen strong enrollment. “The Mental Health Counseling program launch has exceeded expectations,” said Dr. Gerald Nyambane, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and College of Urban Education at Davenport University. “We almost tripled our enrollment goal for the Fall Semester.” The degree programs — from two different colleges within the university — both address the growing need for mental health services. Nearly half the practitioners surveyed in a recent American Psychological Association study said they are unable to meet patient demand for treatment. And, on average, psychologists reported being contacted by more than 15 potential new patients seeking care each month. These programs give students the skills and real-world practicum experience to help those in their community facing mental health challenges. Lesli Richardson of Grand Rapids was the first student to enroll in the Master of Arts in mental health counseling – Lesli Richardson program. Richardson is working toward her second master’s degree; she currently holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in education, both secured two decades ago. “We, as a country, have been through so much, and there is such a need in our community,” said Richardson. “I strongly feel I can help people.”

“I strongly feel I can help people.”

The majority of students enrolled this first year learned about the counseling program from family members, other undergraduate students or alumni of Davenport. And the students come from diverse backgrounds with undergraduate degrees in fields such as criminal justice, psychology, employment and labor relations and accounting. “Since the pandemic, the need for mental health counseling has become even more urgent,” said Nyambane. “Instances of substance abuse have gone up; the need for mental health counseling continues to spike. We’re offering a unique program that addresses the real issues that exist right now.”

so many others, struggled to find mental health care for her family and others within her circle, and found a six-month waiting list for ADHD evaluation. She said going back to school felt like the right step.

Enrollment is also strong for the Master of Science in nursing with a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner concentration program. This curriculum helps nurses advance their knowledge and build the skills necessary to level up their careers and care for patients with mental, emotional or behavioral conditions. The curriculum focuses on addressing psychopathology, substance use disorders and behavioral health. In addition, students learn effective counseling and crisis intervention strategies, how to conduct mental health assessments, and how to provide psychiatric care and rehabilitation.

“It was frustrating trying to seek care as someone who is educated in the medical field,” said Breese. “I can only imagine the struggles others face. Ideally, I’d like to work with children, as they seem to have the hardest time getting the care they need.”

“We started off small, but word has quickly spread,” said Dr. Amy Stahley, dean of the College of Health Professions for Davenport University. “This is a different type of nursing. Students often gravitate toward pediatrics, obstetrics and emergency medicine. We’re excited that a mental health specialty is now on their radar, too.”

Abbie Breese graduated from Davenport in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. As time passed, Breese, like

A generous gift to support mental health at Davenport from alumnus Keith Klingenberg and his wife, Kathy, provided the funds to support the curriculum development for both of these degree programs (see sidebar). Stahley is excited about the student response to the programs so far. “We’ve vastly exceeded our goals for fall enrollment,” she said, “which indicates the tremendous need for this program. What’s really exciting is understanding the impact these graduates will have on the people they serve.”

Through the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner program, students develop the specialized knowledge and empathy needed to address mental health topics in today’s society — valuable skills that include focused listening, analytical thinking and the ability to help others navigate through difficult circumstances, shared Stahley.

Within the program, students gain real-world experience through a 100-hour practicum in a mental health setting and a 600-hour internship in the counseling field under the supervision of a qualified mental health provider.

Hy Berkowitz Professional Excellence Award

After the loss of her husband, Rob, in 2003, Vonnie Woodrick’s life was forever changed, as she was forced to live a life without her loving partner and the father of their children. Feeling as if no one understood suicide, the effects mental illness can have, and the judgment attached, Woodrick set out to change attitudes and the conversation. These efforts led to the formation of i Understand in 2014. The first initiative was to create a petition to change the definition of suicide — updating the stigmatizing definition about intentionally taking one’s life to one about suicide’s role as a terminal side effect of mental illness. Under Woodrick’s leadership, i Understand continues to advocate for open conversations, better resources for loss after suicide and a stigma-free society.

Jai Maw, BBA ’14 Story by Whitney Enge At the age of 17, while still living in England, Jai Maw, BBA ’14, overheard teammates a year ahead of him discuss the opportunity to continue playing soccer at the college level in the United States. The idea was a revelation to him. He’d never previously realized that playing soccer while attending college could be a viable option.

Maw: Four-year soccer captain for the Panthers

Maw had grown up in the United Kingdom and fallen in love with football, or “soccer,” as we say in the U.S., at a young age. As he neared his graduation, he had plans to attend one of the premier higher education schools in England to study law. However after further discussion with some of his teammates and researching the opportunities that American universities could provide, he discovered that he could attend a school in the U.S. with minimal expense and continue his soccer and educational journeys by taking advantage of the financial relief that scholarships could provide. And with that, Maw embarked on the journey to pursue athletics through a university in America! He and a fellow teammate asserted themselves by actively reaching out to coaches and playing in exhibition matches where recruiters and coaches would be watching. The approach paid off. He was fortunate to receive 15 offers from colleges and universities —

including one from the soccer coach at Davenport University. “The reason I chose Davenport was because the net cost was the absolute lowest,” says Maw. “With my upbringing, cost was a very important factor.” After accepting the offer to play with the Panthers in 2010, Maw led the team as captain from his freshman through senior years. Through those years, his team saw a coaching change, WHAC regular season and tournament championships, and an outstanding 86 career wins and multiple seasons with zero losses. Between his first and second years, Maw took two online classes and was able to return to England from time to time to be with family and friends. For each remaining summer of his college career, he played for a semiprofessional soccer team in St. Louis. And while juggling a full class load, a semiprofessional soccer career, and captaining the Davenport University team, he met his now-wife, Jessica Maw, BSN ’14.

“I would go to the student center after every practice, every single day, and make sales calls for [ Jeremy’s] business,” remembers Maw. “It was an amazing sales experience. It opened my eyes to what was possible.”

“For the first 12 months of Betting Hero’s existence, we were flying to New Jersey every Friday,” Maw recalls. “Then we’d fly home at 1 a.m. on Sunday to be back in time for our early morning sales calls at the ‘day jobs.’” By this time, Maw was married and had three children, and his business partner had four. “We were full-time employees, dads, and then business partners with this side hustle,” he says.

Through Betting Hero, Maw and Jakary have activated over 400,000 customers since 2018. Once they’d generated their first $1 million in revenue through Betting Hero, the co-founders took the leap and made the company their sole focus. And the company grew rapidly. After its first year, Betting Hero saw $2 million in growth, then $10 million in its third year, and now, it sits just shy of $20 million in revenue. Maw and Jackary started as two partners and a handful of contractors, and now, the company employs 30 full-time employees and works with more than 400 contractors nationwide. The company provides services in 15 different states and is

trusted by some of the biggest casinos to represent their brands, including FanDuel, DraftKings, Barstool, and BetMGM. In November 2021, Maw and his partner sold the business but remained involved. They were excited to see how it would grow under management by a company that could provide the resources and experience they didn’t yet have. Now nearly two years later, they are reflecting on the success of the company. Looking to the future, Maw is excited about new personal and professional opportunities. He says he is looking forward to spending more time with his wife and four daughters (ages 6, 5, 3, and 1), and spending some time visiting family back in England. Creating a new start-up, continuing his education, and moving are all options swirling through his mind, but he says he’s not sure in what order to do any of them yet. In addition to his entrepreneurial success, Maw also stays connected with Davenport University students as an Alumni Board of Directors member and engages in classroom speaking opportunities regularly. When asked what advice he’d give a budding entrepreneur, he simply says, “Find your motivator.” Maw finds his motivation in proving people wrong: “I will look for someone who doesn’t believe in me, and I’ll use that as motivation.” He is quick to add that every individual’s motivations are different but says that if you can figure out what motivates you to be successful in all aspects of your life, you’ll do well to harness that motivation.

“People thought we were crazy — and I guess we were!”

Crazy they may have been, but also very successful. Betting Hero is now the leading customer acquisition, retention, and development company in the iGaming industry, which is primarily made up of sports betting and iCasino verticals. The company helps companies like DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetMGM acquire new customers through in-person activation events, retain customers through its in-house research division, and develop those customers through its concierge division. One of the core values of Betting Hero is ensuring that customers continue to enjoy the experience responsibly. Betting Hero employees are mindful and trained to be aware of potentially irresponsible gamblers. When they identify such customers, they provide safe gambling resources and divert the customer away from the risk. Maw says: “We are in the business of creating a sustainable, responsible industry. In order to do that, we have to work closely with the customers.”

Maw proved to be a natural salesperson. Upon graduation, with a wealth of experience, he accepted a role with Judson Group, based in Grand Rapids, as an executive search consultant. While there, he consistently exceeded goals and was a top performer by the age of 24. He sought advice from his mentor, who encouraged him to find experience in larger Fortune 500 companies. With this goal in mind, he joined Gartner in 2018. In the same month, he and Jakary started Betting Hero. They both still had successful full-time jobs.

Through his four years at Davenport and his experiences playing with the semipro team in the off-season, Maw realized that playing professional soccer was no longer his goal — instead, exposing himself to available opportunities in the business world had become his focus. He interned, worked, and found mentors while maintaining his responsibilities as a student-athlete. One mentor, in particular, had a significant impact on his future — his now co-founder, Jeremy Jakary, who mentored Maw throughout his college career and hired him in his first sales position.

Every year Davenport Board of Trustees member, Keith Klingenberg, '71 and his wife, Kathy, commit to donating a $5 gift on behalf of every Davenport graduate. The Klingenbergs do this not only as a way to give back to his alma mater but also as a commitment to build and encourage a long-term culture of philanthropy at Davenport among his fellow alums. A huge thank you goes out to the Klingenbergs once again, as well as to all of our alums who find value in giving back to the students, programs, and initiatives that make up the fabric of Davenport University.
