A Message from the President

T

hank you again for your investment in Davenport University and our students during the 2017–18 academic year. Your commitment is vital to the success of our university. With the year completed, I am excited to share with you some of the highlights of the past year:

• Our new state-of-the-art Donald W. Maine College of Business Building has been in use for about a year and a half, and it is providing our students with the business and corporate environment they will experience in the world of work. • The College of Technology is a Center for Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education, one of less than 15 technology programs in the country with this designation. • Our College of Urban Education is transforming the way teachers teach and students learn in the urban setting. Double-digit improvements in teacher and student outcomes demonstrate the program is working. We are preparing to launch a new Master of Urban Education Leadership for principals and superintendents.

• Our Master of Science in Nursing program has been re-accredited for the next decade. • Davenport received its first National Science Foundation grant in our 152year history. Of those colleges and universities that compete for such funding, only about eight percent are ever successful. We are in prestigious company. • We have moved forward on our plans to locate in downtown Detroit. Civic and business leaders are excited about Davenport bringing our outstanding programs in business, technology, healthcare and urban education to the revitalization of the city.

Through our Vision 2020 strategic plan, we are committed to preparing our students to achieve their career dreams, exceed employers’ expectations and transform communities. Helping to prepare our students to be productive members of an organization and their communities is the focus of our mission at DU. Thank you for being part of this journey! I look forward to what we can continue to achieve together on behalf of our students! Sincerely,

• The list goes on and on…. As I embark on my 10th year as president of Davenport University and my 30th year as a college president, I reflect on what we have accomplished together as a transformative institution. We have seen significant strides in the quality of our students. I hope you are proud that Davenport continues to serve veterans, students of color and firstgeneration college students.

Richard J. Pappas, Ed.D. President

Campaign Wrap Up

I

n May 2015, Davenport University announced its $25 million campaign Inspiring Minds, Igniting Careers, Investing in the Vision, with over $12 million in commitments at that time. The most ambitious campaign in university history, it supported three important initiatives: a new facility for the Donald W. Maine College of Business, funds for the new College of Urban Education and additional scholarship support for deserving students. As of Dec. 31, thanks to the extraordinary generosity of DU alumni and friends, the university received over $27.6 million in gifts and pledges, exceeding the goal by 10 percent and completing the effort a year ahead of the campaign’s five-year timeline. Due to the tremendous support Davenport has received, the university opened the new Donald W. Maine College of Business Building for classes in January 2017. Named in honor of the late chancellor emeritus, the 60,000 square foot stateof-the-art facility reflects the hightech business and corporate world of teamwork and collaboration that Davenport graduates enter when they receive their business degrees.

The impact of the College of Urban Education on the Grand Rapids Public Schools has been phenomenal. Outcomes show double-digit improvement in teacher effectiveness and student performance. DU is now launching a Master of Urban Education Leadership for principals and superintendents. Since the campaign’s inception, generous donors have created more than 20 new endowed scholarships to support Davenport’s deserving students. Endowed scholarships provide support for current and future generations of students. Each year nearly 750 students receive approximately $1 million in funds from endowed scholarships.

Thank you so much for your generosity to the Inspiring Minds, Igniting Careers, Investing in the Vision campaign. Your commitment to Davenport students ensured our success!

APRIL 2018 Franco Bianchi, president and CEO of Haworth, Inc., spoke to nearly 1,900 students and their families at Commencement.

JUNE 2018 MAY 2018 Robin Roberts, co-anchor of ABC’s Good Morning America, was the featured guest speaker at the 21st Annual Excellence in Business Dinner Gala. At the gala, Herman Miller President and CEO Brian Walker was honored with the 2018 Peter C. Cook Excellence in Business Award.

LEGACY

THE

PASSION ISSUE

The legacy and celebration of Donald W. Maine 1942–2018 Chancellor Donald W. Maine believed he learned everything he knew from the successful people who surrounded him. In turn, Maine taught and led countless others to success.

O

n Feb. 7, Maine passed away at 75. He served as Davenport’s president and chancellor from 1977 to 2000, leading many of the initiatives that have made Davenport one of the leading private, nonprofit universities in Michigan. He converted Davenport into a four-year institution, expanded into bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and led DU to becoming the first college in Michigan and among the first in the nation to offer online degrees.

In Maine’s 23 years as president, his success and impact was indelible. The college grew from one campus with about 2,000 students to 16 campuses and over 15,000 students. Maine not only left a lasting impact on Davenport as a leader, he also was a mentor, friend and support system to students, faculty and administrators. On April 28, Davenport hosted a celebration of Maine, inviting colleagues, family and friends to the Donald W. Maine College of Business Building. People shared stories and spoke of the professional and personal impact Maine made. In lieu of flowers, people could donate to the Maine Family Memorial Scholarship. Maine’s wife, Kathy, shared a few words at the celebration about everyone’s generosity. “We felt supported and encouraged by all of the kindness and comments we received after Don’s death—the cards, notes, letters, and seeing all of the people who loved Don. Our daughter, Melissa, said it felt like a big warm hug.”

“Thank you to the people who donated to the cause that meant so much to Don. It’s our turn to give you a big warm hug.” Kathy Maine Don Maine’s wife

Maine bequeathed a legacy gift to his endowed scholarship, the Maine Family Memorial Scholarship. “Don loved nothing better than to connect students with a school, but he knew of the struggles people face in paying for their education. Thank you to the people who donated to the cause that meant so much to Don. It’s our turn to give you a big warm hug.” Maine will forever live on providing an education and a future for Davenport students.

A

aron House, ’16, was fortunate to work at a company that offered a tuition reimbursement program to help pay for his degree. But the experience inspired empathy in him for those who don’t have that luxury.

above Aaron House, ’16

“For a person who isn’t working or doesn’t have an employee reimbursement program, earning a degree would be a challenge,” he said. “The opportunities I had allowed to me realize how lucky I am. I wanted to give back.” To help open doors for students, House created a scholarship at Davenport University for underserved populations interested in technology careers. “I am proud of being an underdog and rising to where I am today,” House said. “That is why I wanted to start this scholarship and I wanted it to be available to the masses, not just the exceptional. I wasn’t exceptional. I was ordinary.”

10

Davenport University Annual Report 2017–2018

The Aaron House Future Black Technologist Scholarship will be offered to an African American student from the Southeast Michigan area with a major in technology. According to the National Black Information Technology Leadership Organization and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, African Americans hold less than 8 percent of all information technology jobs in U.S., and fewer than 3 percent of IT leadership positions. “I thought, if I could make it, others can make it, too,” House said. “That is why I decided to give back. I was just an ordinary kid from Detroit who has done some extraordinary things because of the opportunities I received thanks to my amazing support system of mentors, family and friends. I am just paying it forward.” House, who grew up in Detroit and attended Detroit Public Schools, found joy in working on computers at an early age.

below Aaron and his family

“Apple Computers were installed at my elementary school and I took to them,” House said. “Then a few years later, my dad bought our family our first PC when I was 10 years old. I merely played games on the computer. Then my interest led me to taking it apart and putting it back together.” House attended Golightly Career and Technical Center in the heart of Detroit and, in 11th grade, a recruiter from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers took an interest in him and helped him build his skills and knowledge. After high school, he continued to work and took college classes to obtain certifications needed in his field. For over a decade, House led largescale IT projects, which included traveling to many parts of Mexico and Central America for multiple large companies. Early in his career, a director helped him land a project that helped map his career that followed. “At that time, I was just a regular person in an entry-level position when Hazem Barghouty approached me about leading a project,” he said. “At first I was hesitant, but he saw something in me and gave me the opportunity to lead this project even though his peers were doubting his decision.”

House said that director is now a mentor who has helped open doors throughout the rest of his career. House’s reputation helped him land the lead infrastructure engineer job at Comerica Bank in Auburn Hills, Michigan in 2014. “Without his creating this opportunity for me, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” House said. House wanted to continue to advance in his career, but felt that not finishing his bachelor’s degree would discredit his experience and skills in his field.

“The opportunities I had allowed to me realize how lucky I am. I wanted to give back.” Aaron House, ’16

He enrolled at Davenport because of its reputation for degree programs relevant to real-life applications and because it awarded credit for most of his IT certifications, allowing him to advance more quickly towards a degree.

GIVING BACK

Students give back to Detroit through Alternative Spring Break ... and returned home with the powerful gift of a renewed perspective.

S

ophomore Noah French sat outside a run-down apartment complex in Detroit waiting to deliver food to one of its residents—a senior citizen, homebound due to a physical disability that limited his access to food, healthy living conditions and other basic needs.

When French was invited into the apartment, he realized how close to home the issues of poverty and homelessness hit.

12

Davenport University Annual Report 2017–2018

“What I saw almost brought tears to my eyes,” he said. “In the center of a room filled with debris and molding food was a large man in a torn T-shirt sitting in a wheelchair with one leg … No one had visited him in three weeks. It broke my heart because I realized that there are people like this even in Grand Rapids.” French was one of the seven students who joined the Alternative Spring Break program in Detroit to work with Focus: HOPE, a nonprofit organization committed to addressing hunger, poverty, inadequate education and racial divisiveness. “We did various activities throughout the week such as spending the morning helping out at the Focus: HOPE Center for Children head-start school in the classrooms, boxing food for distribution, delivering food to the elderly who are homebound and helping the lower income elderly shop in the mock grocery store that Focus: HOPE provides,” said sophomore Mikayla Mallery.

“Volunteer work is always appreciated and it always makes a difference — whether it is one person or 100. You can always make a difference.” Shaye Rogers ASB Site Leader

left Students participating in the Detroit Alternative Spring Break program

Over the Feb. 9 Spring Break weekend, ASB students gave back to the community in many different ways. But, when asked how their efforts had impacted the community, they spoke with a special sense of accomplishment about their work to alleviate hunger. “I feel that our group made a significant impact not only in the lives of the children we were able to work with, but also in the lives of the food box recipients,” said sophomore and ASB Site Leader Shaye Rogers. Focus: HOPE’s food assistance program for senior citizens is based on income, Rogers said. Volunteers put together monthly food packages to help recipients meet their basic needs.

ASB students worked hard and returned home with the powerful gift of a renewed perspective.

In addition to a renewed sense of gratitude, students reflected on the power each person has to change the world around them.

“All the work that was done over the week made me feel very privileged,” said sophomore Reagan Rackes. “I have never thought ‘where is my next meal coming from? Will I have enough food for the rest of the week?’ … This trip made me step back and rethink my life.” Sophomore Zach Hammel-Brown agreed: “I learned how to appreciate the things in life that I have … to love the people I have in my life as well. A lot of these kids and elderly people didn’t have family who wanted to come see them.”

“As a group, we were able to complete 1,430 boxes,” Rogers said. “With only seven people, it doesn’t seem like we can do a whole lot, but on the first day we completed 550 boxes just on our own. That’s such a huge impact.”

Dear Davenport University Donors, Being a recipient of the MJK Architects Engineers Planners, Inc. Scholarship Fund, I would like to offer my sincerest gratitude for the opportunities that this scholarship has provided me. After completing my associate degree in my early thirties, I continued on to Davenport University to pursue my bachelor’s degree in Network Security and Administration. As a father of three boys, husband, full-time employee and full-time student, the funding provided by your generosity has allowed me to continue with my education and secure a better future for those who depend on me.

My continued education at Davenport University and the success fostered by the MJK scholarship fund has evolved into a position at Michigan State University as an Information Technology Analyst for the Department of Police and Public Safety. This opportunity is something that I am immensely proud of, as it affords me comfort in being able to provide for my family in both the present and future. Thank you for your generosity and interest in helping those looking to achieve greatness. Without the thoughtfulness and selflessness of this scholarship, the accomplishments and goals that I have already achieved and strive for would have been significantly more difficult to obtain.

Thank you,

“I am so thankful for the support that I received,” Wright said. “I want to help the next generation of students at Davenport. I’m really passionate about empowering people and equipping them with the resources they need like my mentors did for me.”

In 2017, Wright and his family established the Wright Family Endowed Scholarship. He says the scholarship is an investment in future generations and hopes it creates a pathway to success for those who receive it.

The scholarship is not Wright’s first time giving back to the university that helped pave the path for his successful career at a global company with products in more than 180 countries. Wright also stepped up as one of the many donors who gave to support the Donald W. Maine College of Business Building. “Investing in infrastructures like the Donald W. Maine Business Building and scholarships are two ways to equip students with resources they need for success,” he said. “My journey is a great example of others investing in the foundation needed to help get me where I am today.”

Wright, a Finance major, completed two internships as a student. At Priority Health, he worked in the financial planning and analyst department where he gained hands-on experience reviewing insurance payments. At State Street Bank in Kansas City, Missouri, he assisted in servicing hedge funds. Wright’s education and internship experiences, coupled with summer jobs in manufacturing, made him a perfect candidate for the newly created finance team at Kellogg’s offices in Grand Rapids.
