150 Years of Academic Excellence 2016 marks Davenport University’s 150th year of providing students with an education rooted in practical applications. From its debut in 1866, when students were offered courses in bookkeeping, penmanship and arithmetic, to today’s cutting edge programs in the fields of business, health and technology, Davenport has always been focused on providing degrees that prepare students to excel in the workforce. In this year of celebration as in all years, Davenport eagerly embraces a future of growth and new opportunities while also honoring the legacy of its past. Today’s students reflect the rich diversity of our communities and the graduates who crossed the stage at this year’s commencement represent a wide variety of ages, backgrounds and walks of life. These students will go on to succeed in fields like nursing, accounting and information technology — but many of them would not have been able to achieve their career aspirations without the support of scholarships. During the 2015–16 academic year, 737 students received a total of $939,071 in scholarship assistance through the endowed and annual funds supported by contributions to the Davenport University Foundation. New Scholarships Established in 2015–16: Nancy J. Coughlin Endowed Scholarship Founders Endowed Scholarship Laurens Jan VandenBerg Memorial Endowed Scholarship Elmer and Ingeborg Woods Endowed Scholarship The Gietzen Family Endowed Scholarship The Larita Stephanak Annual Nursing Scholarship Understanding the Terms Used in this Report Endowed scholarships provide perpetual support for current and future generations of Davenport students. These funds are invested, with a percentage of their earnings allocated annually for financial aid. This allows the fund to provide for current scholarship needs while protecting it for future use. Endowed scholarships at Davenport University require a minimum commitment of $25,000, which may be made as a single contribution or donated over several years. Once an endowed scholarship fund has reached $25,000, it will be invested for one year before being allocated. Even after an endowed fund reaches maturity, continuing to support the fund will maximize its impact, allowing it to provide additional and/or larger student scholarships. This year, in celebration of Davenport’s 150th year, an Anniversary Scholarship can be endowed at the $10,000 level through December 31. These funds provide the same scholarship support as a traditional endowed fund and can be increased over time. Annual scholarships are awarded in their entirety in one academic year. To establish this type of scholarship, a $500 minimum annual gift and a multi-year commitment is required by the donor. The awarding criteria for all scholarships is established by the donor in conjunction with the Alumni and Development Office. Awarding criteria may include academic achievement, financial need or enrollment at a specific campus, to name a few. Donors are notified annually of their scholarship’s market value and student recipients. I am so grateful for the ongoing support of our community in furthering Davenport’s mission. For more information about establishing a named scholarship or other giving opportunities at Davenport University, please contact me at 616-233-3413 or Louise.Kidd@davenport.edu. Louise E.
