MESSAGE FROM THE UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT
Richard J. Pappas
I
have often said that I stand on the shoulders of the leaders of this University who came before me. In this 150th year, now more than ever, I reflect on the remarkable path this institution has taken to get where it is today. On the following pages, that path will be reflected in a timeline of Davenport’s history, as well as recognition of the exciting things that have happened at Davenport University this past year. A university is only as strong as the community it is part of, and each of our campuses across the state are part of exceptional communities with generous supporters and advocates, bright students and innovative businesses and industry. I am grateful for the many partners that help us provide a transformative education for our students and I am proud to share some highlights from the past year with you in our 2015–16 Annual Report. The past year was momentous for Davenport University. Construction of the new Donald W. Maine College of Business Building, which opened January 2017, provided a visible sign of Davenport’s growth. This new building will not only provide the space our growing College of Business needs to fully realize its potential, it also frees up space within other academic buildings for the continued growth in our College of Technology, College of Health Professions and the College of Arts and Sciences. Meanwhile, in partnership with Grand Rapids Public Schools, our College of Urban Education graduated its first cohort of students from the Master of Urban Education program, who have shown tremendous, measurable growth in their classroom outcomes. Additional
cohorts were launched in Grand Rapids and Muskegon, with a new master’s program to prepare school principals in development. In the past two years we have also increased our presence on community college campuses across the state and now reside in University Centers at Kalamazoo Valley Community College, Macomb County Community College, Mott Community College, Northwestern Michigan College, Schoolcraft Community College and Wayne County Community College District. In 2016 we added two new apartment buildings and now have nearly 800 students residing at the W.A. Lettinga Campus, an increase of about 60 percent from just a few years ago. The Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex also was expanded this past year to include facilities to support our track and field program plus various field sports, including the new football program that just completed its first year of competition. In the fall of 2017, Davenport begins competing at the NCAA Division II level as a new member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), further increasing Davenport’s reputation and quality for athletic programs and enhancing student life at DU. Another area of growth has been fundraising; we publicly launched our $25 million “Investing in the Vision” Campaign back in 2015 and, with a recent $1.5 million matching gift, we are now 96 percent of the way toward our goal. Our reputation as a military-friendly institution and one that embraces diversity, equity and inclusion continues to grow, with awards from various organizations. Early in 2016, we became only the second college or university to be recognized at any level by Michigan
Performance Excellence, the state’s premier quality award program. Remaining ever faithful to our mission, this University is continually evolving in ways that will help prepare our students for a future that looks very different from today. With a renewed focus on quality, Davenport has made strides in several important areas since 2010. We have improved upon our persistence and retention rates which has led to a 110 percent increase in our graduation rate. We have grown in other important outcomes as well, such as our student and graduate satisfaction rates, which are both at all-time highs. We have seen growth in the satisfaction of employers with how prepared our graduates are to have an immediate impact on their organizations. And over the past six years, we’ve added more than 20 new degree programs based on the needs of the marketplace. Growth can be measured in many ways, and as Davenport moves into its 151st year of continuous operations, we remain excited about the many ways we continue to mature and thrive as one of Michigan’s largest private, nonprofit universities. Thank you for being a part of our journey; we look forward to all that we will accomplish together in the coming year.
Richard J. Pappas, Ed.D. President
COLLEGE HIGHLIGHTS
How do you change the world? At Davenport, we change the world one student at a time; one mind shaped, expanded, challenged. A college education is transformative. Each year, our graduates are transformed from students into nurses, software engineers, financial managers and business leaders. Their education is transformative for their families and their communities as well. We are proud of the faculty and staff who have been called to this work and who devote their time to shaping the futures of our students. These are some of the accomplishments the talented teams in each of our schools have achieved over the past year.

1924
On January 25, 1866, sixteen students gathered in a classroom in downtown Grand Rapids to take lessons from a former Union soldier named Conrad Swensburg, learning the skills necessary to succeed in Michigan’s growing commercial enterprises of the era.
In 1910, the school’s fortunes were bleak, with deepening deficits, declining enrollment and fierce competition threatening to close its doors. A young faculty member, Michael Edward (M.E.) Davenport, took over management of the school and turned things around.
In 1924, Davenport bought a local competitor and formed the Davenport-McLachlan Institute. As the head of the school, M.E. Davenport developed a reputation as an innovator in education.

Seventy-nine students, alumni and staff spent over 6,820 hours working on the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program this past tax season, providing free tax preparation services for low to moderate income taxpayers. These volunteers served over 6,400 taxpayers around a tri-county area and yielded over $8 million in refunds.
The Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) program had its first cohort participate in commencement this past May. These students completed their fieldwork in December of 2016.
This past summer, the College of Technology offered the first computerfocused camp of its kind at Davenport University called “Bytes”. The camp provided opportunities for great engagement with 9–12th graders, getting them excited about computerrelated careers.
Business Professionals of America (BPA) held its 50th National Leadership Conference in Boston, MA in May. Students from Davenport’s W.A. Lettinga and Lansing campuses represented the University at the Golden Anniversary Conference where Davenport’s student ambassadors earned 16 national championships. Overall, the University placed 79 finalists in the top ten. Over the last eight years, Davenport students have earned first place awards in 100 national events, which is an all-time BPA record.
Active Minds, a recently established registered student organization, was recognized as the Outstanding New Student Organization in April 2016. Active Minds is a nationwide organization that supports campus-based chapters led by students who are passionate about mental health advocacy and education. University chapters lead university and community-based events that educate others about mental health, connect students to resources and facilitate change in negative perceptions about mental illness.
Students in Dr. Brian Kowalczk’s gaming class created and developed a new video game similar to the Nintendo “Zelda” format. These students were able to apply their knowledge while also having the opportunity to utilize technological collaboration tools beneficial for teamwork and project management.
1954 M.E. Davenport combined practical skills with the studies of humanities, and because of his forethought, the DavenportMcLachlan Institute survived the 1929 stock market crash and thrived through post-World War II, when many returning soldiers headed back to school.
In 1954, M.E. Davenport’s final accomplishment converted the now-known Davenport Business Institute (DBI) to nonprofit status. His son-in-law, Robert W. Sneden, took over the helm and continued to expand on Davenport’s practical education tradition.
Under his leadership, DBI became the first independent business school in Michigan to achieve collegiate status. It was accredited by the North Central Association and, by 1967, had grown to over 2,000 students. 5
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES
COLLEGE OF URBAN EDUCATION
Humanities professor Terri Tomaszek led Davenport’s “Great Michigan Read” partnership with the Michigan Humanities Council for 2015–16. As a partner in this project, Davenport sponsored reading groups on campus and as community outreach at local libraries. Dr. Tomaszek was also invited to serve as committee chair for the West Central Region to select the text for the 2016–17 Great Michigan Read.
Davenport established the College of Urban Education to prepare and develop teachers in real-world settings to meet the educational demands of urban schools. Through this experientialservice learning program, College of Urban Education candidates learn through total immersion in actual school environments. Since its inception, the College of Urban Education’s Master’s in Urban Education program has been able to make an almost immediate, significant impact on Grand Rapids Public Schools youth in participating schools. Early assessment of the College of Urban Education teacher candidates demonstrates remarkable improvement in proficiencies across the board. We look forward to continuing to build and expand this important program.
Math professor Diane Salinas organized and planned four STEM days at the Lettinga campus. The four different visits engaged more than 500 Kentwood Public Schools students in sessions on cryptography, math and science and provided a showcase for the College’s faculty to highlight Davenport’s expertise in technology, math and science.
In 2016, the College of Urban Education celebrated the graduation of the program’s

2000
In 1977, Donald W. Maine, the first president outside the Davenport family, was appointed to take over. And, with an uncertain global economy, he knew things had to change.
A shift toward adult learning began, and by the end of 1985, the first class of baccalaureates graduated. Three short years later, Davenport had its first MBA graduate— a remarkable achievement.
As the institution grew, Davenport operated as three separate colleges in three states. Don Maine, and later, President Randy Flechsig, helped shift these three colleges into one that is now known as Davenport University.

In 2009, Davenport’s current president, Dr. Richard Pappas took over the leadership reins.
Through Dr. Pappas’ long-range, strategic Vision 2015, Davenport reached its highest levels yet of student outcomes. Vision 2020 will further accelerate those targets. A once small business school has grown into one of Michigan’s largest, private, nonprofit institutions of higher learning.

DONOR STORY
Godwin Hardware and Plumbing Marvin “Red” Brummel founded Godwin Hardware and Plumbing in 1955 not only to serve as the local hardware store, but also as an investment in the community he loved. Red’s dedication to his neighbors and customers and his reputation as the go-to plumbing guy helped the mom-and-pop shop grow. Today, it is the region’s most complete full service hardware store and plumbing supplier, employing 160 people across its three business units. Red believed in giving back to the community and he placed a high value on hard work combined with an education. Red got involved with Davenport University in the 70s, serving as a trustee on the governing board from 1976 to the year of his passing in 1987.

He believed that everyone should have the opportunity to be better educated and understood that through education, not only does the individual excel, but so does the community they are part of. Red backed up what he believed with a generous spirit of giving.
of Davenport University over the years, including a recent gift to name a meeting room in the new Donald W. Maine College of Business Building. Supporting education is just one of the many ways they give back to the community they have grown alongside.
In 1990, the Godwin leadership team established an endowed scholarship at Davenport in Red’s memory, continuing the passion he had for DU, its students and the impact they have in the community.
Tim Buist, President of Godwin Hardware and Plumbing, shared his thoughts on that growth, saying, “We are seeing our community make an impact locally, statewide, nationally and globally. Davenport is playing a major role in this by preparing their students to join top organizations, small business and even start their own businesses. This is the fruit of the efforts of so many men and women that shared the vision of Red Brummel.”
Red’s belief in the impact of education on the overall community is part of the DNA that still leads Godwin today and they have remained generous supporters

development for its members. Daronte shared some thoughts on his experiences at DU and what Alpha League means to him. What made you decide to attend DU?
How did you get involved with the Alpha League?
My younger brothers were being recruited by Coach Lou Esposito for the football team. At the time, I was at Ivy Tech Community College in Ft. Wayne, Indiana and had been looking for a school to transfer to. I wanted to go to school with my brothers and I was interested in the football team so I decided to transfer to Davenport. I had been at Ivy Tech for a year and before that I had worked for a couple of years after graduating high school. It’s not the traditional route a lot of kids take to college but I needed that time to find my purpose and get a better vision of what I wanted to do so that I wasn’t wasting time or resources.
When I started working with Admissions, they were in the process of building this program [Alpha League]. My brothers and I, along with some of our football teammates, were some of the first members approached to join. And how has the Alpha League impacted your time at DU and your success here? The opportunities I’ve had would not have been possible without Alpha League. For example, the scholarships that were available, the brotherhood outside of football with classmates like ourselves, the networking with businessmen in the community where you actually get oneon-one time with them.
It’s great to have mentors and to learn from the people that have come to speak to us—people with the desire to give back and show you how their experience got them where they are today. What would you like people who aren’t familiar with Alpha League to know about it? It’s inspiring; there are motivational aspects to it. We’re being held accountable to a standard. There’s no excuse to miss a meeting, there’s no excuse not to be on time. And it’s still about education. It’s reinforcing all of the habits that school teaches us—being organized, time management. It reinforces ways to be more effective in the classroom, more effective in the community. In our meetings we talk about the history of our culture, educating ourselves beyond just the classes that we take.
The Alpha League Program Fund receives support from donors to assist with the cost of programming.

Jerry and Suzanne Callahan Jerry and Suzanne Callahan’s relationship with Davenport University spans more than two decades, which is fitting for people who describe themselves as life-long learners. Their strong commitment to education and connection to Davenport led them to establish the Jerry and Suzanne Callahan Endowed Scholarship. “We realized that our education was our ticket to opportunity and we wanted to do something to try to ease the burden for future students,” Jerry reflected.

Suzanne is a Davenport faculty member, teaching at the W.A. Lettinga Campus and online within the marketing department. Jerry, now the Vice President of Innovations and Collaborations at the Van Andel Institute, served in a leadership role for Davenport’s Information Technology team from 1995–2000. Jerry was instrumental in launching Davenport Online in 1997. “Our experience with Davenport has spanned some pretty remarkable changes,” Suzanne shared, speaking about the transformation she’s seen at Davenport over the years.
“Davenport has stayed nimble and responsive to the workforce needs in our community and the classes are relevant to our students’ career aspirations.” Creating a scholarship fund at Davenport was not only about believing in the mission of the University. The Callahans are passionate about meaningful learning and innovation in education. They are active in the community, advocating for causes that are important to them in the fields of education and health. Through their local involvement, the Callahans have had the opportunity to meet individuals and families that have inspired them to give back. They shared stories of first-generation college students and full-time working parents who were trying to improve their lives through education. “Their work ethic and desire to do more for themselves and their families motivated us to do our part to support their goals.” The Callahans are excited about Davenport’s direction, like the addition of the new Donald W. Maine College of Business Building. They see the University’s growth and progress as important parts of the communities where DU campuses are located. Suzanne offered, “Our local employers should be excited knowing Davenport students are working hard to prepare themselves for the jobs of the future.” The Callahans investment in DU and our students is truly an investment in this community, as our students go on to become graduates that will shape the places they live through their work, service and generosity.
STUDENT STORY
Irma Garcia-Murillo As a first-generation college student, Irma has had to overcome barriers on her path to obtaining a college degree. She talked with us about how important scholarship support has been in getting to where above Irma Garcia-Murillo, Davenport University student.
she is now.
Irma, can you tell us a little bit about your family and your background?
And once you decided on Davenport, how did that experience change?
I was born in Mexico and lived there until I was five, when we came to the U.S. My parents wanted a better life for their children. Traditionally, the families in my hometown were very poor and children often went to work in the fields at a young age. My mom didn’t finish second grade and my dad barely finished ninth grade. They’ve always encouraged me to pursue more education.
I felt comfortable at the Davenport Holland Campus, at first because it was close to home, and then I got to know and love the faculty and staff. The small classes and caring faculty meant a lot to me. When I applied to Davenport, I was automatically matched to scholarships I qualified for. It’s so important and helpful that there are donors and people that support students like me.
What was your experience as you started to think about and plan for attending college?
What would you like to do after you graduate?
I knew I wanted to go to college; it’s something I never questioned. I’m proud to say my parents are blue-collar workers but because of that, I knew going to college wasn’t going to be easy. I didn’t have someone at home to help me look at colleges or apply for scholarships.
I’d like to join the corporate business world and after a few years, maybe come back for my master’s degree.
40% of DU students are first generation college students.
Thank you for helping students like Irma succeed by supporting scholarships!

Inspiring Minds, Igniting Careers, Investing in the Vision The close of the 2015–16 fiscal year brought an exciting milestone—the five-year, $25 million Inspiring Minds, Igniting Careers, Investing in the Vision capital campaign had reached over $22 million in support. Launched publicly in 2015, the campaign has garnered tremendous community support for its main initiatives: construction of a new Donald W. Maine College of Business Building, support for the innovative College of Urban Education and growing the endowment to provide scholarship support for an increased number of deserving students.
The Donald W. Maine College of Business Building is an important part of the ongoing evolution of Davenport University. The University broke ground for the building in November 2015 and is slated to welcome its first students in January 2017.
above A conceptual drawing of the Donald W. Maine College of Business Building.
Situated on the W.A. Lettinga campus, Davenport’s residential campus, the new college will accommodate the needs of a growing student population. The 60,000-square-foot, three-story facility will allow for the continued expansion of academic programs in the College of Business as well as freeing up space within the other facilities to accommodate the growth of technology, health and arts and science programs. The College will also house the new Entrepreneurship Center and business accelerator, which will serve to promote women as entrepreneurs and foster growth in established business ventures. The new facility is named in recognition of former Chancellor and President Donald W. Maine’s two decades of service to Davenport. His vision and the strategic initiatives he implemented helped make Davenport one of the leading private, nonprofit universities in the state. Don has remained a close friend to and generous supporter of Davenport in the years since his presidency. At an emotional groundbreaking for the new building, Don remarked, “I am humbled and astonished my name is on this building. It is an unbelievable honor.” 13

Partnering for Student Success For 150 years, Davenport University has responded to the changing times and evolving needs of the communities it serves. From the degree programs offered to the creation of a global online campus, Davenport has been innovative in its approach to providing access to higher education for traditional and non-traditional students in all stages of life. Over the past year, Davenport has expanded that commitment to meet students where they are through the development of relationships with community colleges across the state. The University has an established partnership with Northwestern Michigan 14

College (NMC)—the site of DU’s Traverse City campus—and their University Center. Over the past year, similar partnerships have been formed with Mott Community College in Flint, Kalamazoo Valley Community College in Kalamazoo, Wayne County Community College and Macomb Community College in Detroit, and Schoolcraft College in Livonia. These partnerships allow students who earn their associate degree at a partner institution to seamlessly transfer credits toward a bachelor degree program at DU and continue their studies at the same location.
Alyssa Irani, Campus Director at DU’s Traverse City Campus, has seen firsthand the benefits of the partnership with Northwestern Michigan College over the past two decades. She shared, “The customized alignment of programs and services with our community college partners offers students an efficient and highly collaborative environment that supports their higher education journey. Our staff works closely with NMC student services to ensure a smooth transition that often includes attendance at both schools concurrently. These efforts support strong retention and graduation rates for our DU students in Traverse City.” This sentiment of collaboration is echoed by Marilyn Schlack, President of Kalamazoo Valley Community College, who commented on the new DU partnership by stating, “We think the university center concept is a logical solution to the degreecompletion challenges that many of our students face.” Davenport University plans to continue to build and enhance partnerships with community colleges throughout the state in the coming years.
A Lasting Legacy: Understanding Planned Gifts and Their Benefits Planned gifts, such as bequests or charitable trusts, can be an advantageous way to provide for a future gift to Davenport University. Planned giving combines charitable giving with financial and estate planning. It enables many donors to make a more substantial gift and can offer potential tax and financial benefits. A planned gift can provide for you or your loved ones, entitle you to charitable income and/or gift or estate tax deductions and enable you to leave a legacy for Davenport.
Bequests and Estate Plan Gifts BEQUESTS Next to writing a check, perhaps the best known vehicle for philanthropy is the bequest. A bequest is a gift that is made through your will or trust and can establish your wishes today without relinquishing needed assets during your lifetime.
SECURITIES A gift of stocks or bonds may provide you with an even greater tax benefit. If you have owned securities for more than one year and the value has increased, you may avoid capital gains tax and receive a charitable income tax deduction equal to the fair market value of your gift. REAL ESTATE A gift of your real estate that has been held for more than a year also has the potential advantage of providing you with a charitable tax deduction based on the current value of the property, as well as enabling you to avoid capital gains tax on the sale of your property.
right Located in the Robert W. Sneden Center on the W.A. Lettinga campus, the Legacy Wall recognizes donors who have made a planned gift to the university.
Planned Gifts That Generate Income CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY A charitable gift annuity is a great example of how a gift to Davenport can generate income for you. Once established, a gift annuity will provide fixed payments to you for life. CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUST The most versatile charitable giving tool, the charitable remainder trust (CRT) can help you avoid capital gains tax on the sale of your appreciated assets, generate regular increased income for you, provide you with a charitable income tax deduction and fulfill your philanthropic objectives.
