DU Pride!

As you likely know, with the resignation of Randy Flechsig, I am serving in an interim position during our national search for a new president. Our goal is to name a new president by the start of our next academic year. In the meantime, I’m honored and excited to lead this great University. In this issue of DU Review, you will find our annual listing of donors. On behalf of our scholarship recipients, I would like to sincerely thank each of you whose name appears on this list. Your generous contributions help support many DU students in their pursuit of their educational and career goals, now and in the future. And as we continue in this new era of philanthropy, building on your generosity and reaching out to first-time givers, we count on you to keep spreading the word about the value of investing in Davenport students. Your ongoing support is essential – and deeply appreciated. You also will see stories about the dedication of the Student Center and the groundbreaking for a third residence hall. A full college experience goes beyond the classroom, and our residential campus in Caledonia near Grand Rapids is truly becoming a traditional center of our University. Our new location in Livonia is a testament to our continued commitment to adult students who are working toward degrees that will help them compete in today’s economy. We were pleased by the acceptance of DU in this community and with fall enrollment that far exceeded expectations. At the start of a new year we can reflect with pride on our achievements and look forward with pride to all we still can accomplish. The quality of our facilities and academics and the performance of our students continue to improve. So, too, does our reputation as the choice of more students who are prepared to graduate and fulfill their career and life goals. Thank you for your support. Sincerely,

Dazzling new student center gets a standing ovation

spontaneous standing ovation was the grand finale to the dedication of Davenport University’s new student center in late October. The 87,000-square-foot facility is the new headquarters for DU’s student life activities and athletics program and has attracted rave reviews from users and visitors. The dedication included an Olympics-style procession of more than 400 students representing DU’s athletic teams and student clubs. Speakers included Interim President Mike Volk and Board of Trustees Chairman Ken Bovee, along with Caledonia Township Supervisor Bryan Harrison. Representing the student body were Caitlin MacNeil from Student Life, varsity volleyball player Samantha Mol and Chris Allen, a British member of the men’s soccer team. Following the dedication’s ribbon-cutting ceremony, hundreds of guests toured the facility. The center was also in the spotlight the next day, with a public open house and free men’s basketball game, along with soccer and lacrosse matches on the adjacent sports field.

Students give high praise to their new ‘home court’ With hundreds of their fellow students in attendance, three students – two athletes and one Student Life representative – spoke about the “home court” advantage during the student center dedication. Following are excerpts from their remarks. “I have had a front-row seat in witnessing the student center take shape and come to life. The change it has made to our campus is something that will benefit students for years to come.” Caitlin MacNeil Junior, marketing major “I truly believe that this center, with the facilities and equipment it provides athletes, will not only propel the soccer team but all of our athletic programs into many great achievements.” Chris Allen Senior, marketing major

The center features a 1,500-seat field house for men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball games, auxiliary gym and recreational facilities for students, including 200 on-campus residents. Other amenities range from a climbing tower, fitness center and indoor track to pool tables and other games and a café and concessions stand. The Panther athletics program made its debut about seven years ago and today offers 18 men’s and women’s teams. The hockey team won a national championship last season and the women’s basketball and men’s golf and soccer teams have won the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) championship for the past two seasons. Next fall, three new sports – tennis, competitive cheer and competitive dance – will be added to the athletics roster. Construction of the center began in July 2007, with Grand Rapids-based Integrated Architecture and Rockford Construction hired for the project. The two firms also recently collaborated on the building of DU’s new facility in Livonia.

“DU’s volleyball team used to have to train in Muskegon before season and practice in Byron Center during the year. Now we finally have a court to call home, and fans to support us. The student center also offers another place to hang out in between classes and before games.” Samantha Mol Junior, honors accounting major

Hot Jobs Report Programs at Davenport University focus on three core areas — business, technology and health — that correspond to many of the hottest job growth areas. Here are some of our “hot jobs” academic programs: Business • Want to work in sports, one of the 10 largest U.S. industries? DU offers a new bachelor of business administration (BBA) degree in sport management. We also offer a bachelor’s program with a sport marketing emphasis. • How about international business? DU offers a BBA in the field, with an opportunity to study abroad in Europe or Asia. More than 2 million new career opportunities have been created in recent years. • Accounting fraud investigation will grow nearly 70 percent, as one example of a BBA degree we created in response to career trends we monitor constantly. • Our BBA in public safety and security management is unique because it emphasizes preparation for leadership. • HR is hot. DU offers a program that combines a bachelor’s degree in strategic human resource management with an MBA, and it takes just five years. • About that MBA. You can specialize in everything from finance to health care management, and business is booming. Technology • Projected job growth in computer gaming is 180 percent, and DU offers a BAS degree in computer gaming and simulation. • Computer-related jobs offer starting salaries as high as $76,000. We offer BAS degrees in information and computer security, computer networking, computer information systems and computer support technology. • Biometric security is one of the top 20 fastest-growing careers in technology. DU’s BAS degree in this field is one-of-a-kind in Michigan. • A major in network security, the fastest-growing job area in IT, will prepare you to create and implement network security policies for an organization. • The master of science in information assurance focuses on everything from risk mitigation to legal and ethical issues. Typical jobs include chief information officer and chief security officer. Health • With about 1 million job openings projected in nursing, DU offers everything from a diploma in practical nursing to a bachelor’s degree in nursing. • Another fast-growing health occupation is health information management. There’s also a DU bachelor’s program in health services administration. More information: www.davenport.edu/programs

‘Brains are the most valuable resource of the 21st century’ Futurist, speaking at DU, believes higher ed is the key to Michigan’s future Lou Glazer has a message for Michigan: “Brains are the most valuable resource of the 21st century.” The bad news: the state is losing its young, college-educated brainpower to out-of-state metropolitan areas that, quite simply, offer graduates a better quality of life. Glazer is a futurist and the president of Michigan Future, Inc., which is focused on how to bring prosperity back to Michigan in an increasingly knowledge-driven economy. He spoke about “creating, attracting and retaining talent” to recapture that prosperity during a conference on the Davenport University campus. The event was sponsored by Leadership West Michigan, a program of the West Michigan Chamber Coalition. Glazer’s premise, after substantial research, is that young, upwardly mobile college graduates no longer follow a traditional career-ladder approach. They are not necessarily interested in sticking it out with one company and aspiring to progressively responsible positions and promotions. Instead, today’s grads are more likely to be “rock climbers.” From that first entry-level job, they may move to a number of other companies nationally or internationally, a variety of jobs – depending on market conditions – and metropolitan areas that provide a cool downtown with affordable housing, mass transportation, recreation and nightlife. “Place is becoming increasingly important,” he said. “Today’s young college grads are often likely to pick the place where they want to live and then go look for a job there. Places with the highest concentration of talent win. Michigan must be able to attract younger and better educated workers, or we will continue to get poorer.” Michigan Future has studied young, college-educated adult populations in three of Michigan’s largest metropolitan areas – Detroit, LanFuturist Lou Glazer at DU: sing and Grand Rapids – and compared them with three other Midwestern metropolitan areas – Chicago, Madison, Wis., and Minneapolis, “Education is becoming more customized, Minn. Overall, the three Michigan cities have 50 percent fewer young, educated professionals. “Chicago is well known for its ability to attract more personally focused on rock climbers this segment of the population, but we also wanted to show that other smaller, cold-climate cities can have the same allure,” Glazer said. instead of ladder climbers.” The futurist noted that higher education needs to adjust to the new trends as well. “Education needs to become more customized, more personally focused on rock climbers instead of ladder climbers,” he said. “Instilling a love of learning is an essential skill for our world of constant change and the rock climbers in it. At probably no other time in our history has high prosperity been linked so closely to higher education. If Michigan is successful in making this transition, it can once again become a place where, if you are smart and willing to work hard, you can earn a good income and pass on a better life to your children.”

New Livonia location already a hit with students

Davenport University’s new location in Livonia attracted a fall enrollment of about 950 students, exceeding expectations. The 40,000-square-foot classroom facility, highly visible from I-275, features 26 classrooms, several computer labs and a library on three floors. The facility opened for its first semester in the fall. “We are thrilled by how this community has embraced Davenport University and that we are meeting a demand for higher education in a growing and dynamic area of the state,” said University Provost David Fleming, Ph.D. “Our convenient location, flexible class schedules and career curriculum are resonating with students who want to prepare for many of our state’s most in-demand careers.” The dedication in September included a ribbon-cutting ceremony and informal tours for about 200 DU staff and students and community, government and educational leaders. The event was held in conjunction with the Livonia Chamber of Commerce and included Chamber President Dan West and Livonia Mayor Jack Kirksey as speakers. Randi Olson, a freshman accounting major taking classes at the location, was also among the speakers and saluted the university “for giving us a higher education alternative for southeast Michigan, with flexible class schedules and online classes for the working student.” During the tour, visitors met students and faculty representing a variety of academic programs. The new facility is also the site of the university’s first Executive MBA program, which made its debut in the winRandi Olson ter semester.

DAVENPORT UNIVERSITY REVIEW

DU seeking one student for Ford Scholarship Davenport University has launched a nationwide search for one outstanding student to receive the new scholarship honoring the memory of former President Gerald R. Ford. The university is one of few schools in the nation granted permission to bestow this honor. The Gerald R. Ford Memorial Scholarship will be presented to a highly distinguished student pursuing a four-year degree on the university’s Grand Rapids campus. The four-year scholarship includes tuition, room and board and a study abroad opportunity, along with fees and books. To qualify for the scholarship, a student must be accepted as a DU freshman on the Grand Rapids campus for the fall 2009 semester and have achieved a minimum 3.75 grade point average and a minimum ACT score of 31 in high school. In addition, student applicants are required to write an essay describing how they will uphold the values and character of former President Ford. A DU panel will interview final candidates for the award early this year. The recipient will be introduced at the university’s scholarship fundraising Excellence in Business dinner in Grand Rapids. Held annually in May, the event is attended by hundreds of west Michigan business and community leaders. More information on the scholarship is available at Fordscholarship. davenport.edu.

Ground broken for latest residence hall Demand from students for a DU living experience continues to be high, so construction has begun on a third residence hall. The 120,765-square-foot facility, scheduled to open this fall, will offer the first-ever cafeteria service in a DU residence hall. It will be the largest of three halls on campus, with accommodations for 300 students.

“Enrollment on campus is increasing each year, so we are very pleased to have this new residence life option,” said Kevin O’Halla, executive vice president for Enrollment and Student Services. “The addition of food service will also be a very attractive incentive for incoming students.” The campus opened with one residence hall, and a second residence hall was completed ahead of schedule in 2006 to meet demand. “Combined with the new student center, this additional residence hall will really boost our ability to enhance the student experience on campus,” said Tammy Loud, vice president for Student Services. “We are really excited to see this facility go from concept to reality.”

One team, many diverse men Davenport’s men’s soccer team attracts talent from across the globe Coach Carl Whitehouse’s Panthers soccer team finished the regular season with a record of 10-7-1 and 6-5-1 in conference play. Whitehouse said diversity in programs such as Davenport soccer is more common than some would think. His team has members from around the globe, but is obviously one cohesive unit of men who play very hard together. DU’s soccer team comprises players from Bosnia (Kovacevic and Mirza Sehmehmedovic), England (Lewis Robinson, David Wood, Tony Deakin, Carl Winterbottom, John Haines and Chris Allen), South Africa (Damian Gonclavles), Mexico (Efrain Her- Chris Allen nandez), Jamaica (Duvare Minto and Rory Scott), Somalia (Said Ali Hassan) and Hong Kong (Wing Yin Luk). “It’s all about team chemistry,” Whitehouse said. “We recruit looking for certain characteristics in a player and look beyond simply having different nations on our team. Our guys are constantly thinking more as a family than just as a team.” “The team spirit here is something that is just amazing,” said Chris Allen, senior men’s soccer player. Chris is an international student athlete from Huddersfield, England, majoring in marketing. “Our team is like a gang of brothers. We live, eat, drink and play together – building a bond within our team that is obviously the key to our success.” Chris says he has seen much change at Davenport, including the new addition of the soccer field and is truly thankful for the experience at DU. “This has been the greatest experience of my life!” Chris says that he chose Davenport because the soccer team had a wealth of exceptional players. He was looking for the opportunity to become a top competitor on the national level and feels that he has really come a long way since his first game at DU. Chris spoke with several schools across the country – but he chose Davenport. Chris has been coaching soccer for more than eight years now and would eventually like to coach at the college level. He looks forward to graduation but hopes to stay in the States and find a job with his soon-to-come degree in marketing. NEWS ADVANCEMENT

Donor Profile

Q & A with donors Henry & Carolyn Bouma Henry Bouma is the retired CEO of Lumbermen’s Incorporated (now an employee-owned corporation), headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan with 11 locations throughout Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. Bouma also has been active with the Davenport University Foundation. He and his wife, Carolyn, live in Byron Center, Michigan. How did you get involved with DU? After we started our business in 1954 it seemed natural to attend Davenport for a few courses in business and accounting. Davenport helped me with the early days of our business, and since then the business has grown and operates in three different states. Why do you support DU? I remember when Davenport was located at the corner of Fulton and Division. It’s great to see how the University has come so far with the addition of the new campus, residence halls and Student Center. We now have a couple of grandchildren who are attending Davenport. We appreciate the importance of education and feel that it is important to ensure younger generations will have the opportunity to go to college. Why do you feel the need to give back to DU? Davenport has the strong business background that fills a need for so many. The University’s mission toward higher education has been in line with what I believe to be important. We have supported Davenport personally as well as through Lumbermen’s via scholarships and most recently with construction of the Student Center.

CARRY ON THE TRADITION Commitment to excellence in education is at the core of DU. Make sure it continues with your annual gift to the Davenport University Foundation to support the students and the programs of your alma mater.

Homecoming 2008 a winner! Homecoming 2008 was a great success again this year, with more than 500 alumni, DU staff, students and their families and friends attending the season-opening Panther hockey game against arch-rival Grand Valley State University. Following an indoor tailgate party at the Grand Rapids ice arena, spectators cheered the Panthers on to a 6-4 victory. Members of DU’s 2007-2008 ACHA DII National Championship team were also honored during the event, with each player and coach awarded a commemorative championship ring from DU Interim President Mike Volk.

“Our alumni really look forward to this game every year,” said Kim Bruyn, executive vice president for Advancement. “This year’s Homecoming was even more special with our national championship celebration.” Homecoming 2008 also included the sale of more than 125 hockey pucks for a “Chuck-A-Puck” student scholarship fundraiser. The Anderson family, whose children won a puck at each of the last two DU Homecoming events, kept the family tradition alive, with their third child, Trent, winning a puck this year. www.davenport.edu

MBA from DU opens many doors Shaquanda S. Gordon, 2004 Human Resources Manager – Eastern Region, Priority Health

Shaquanda S. Gordon graduated from Davenport University with her master’s degree in business administration and an emphasis in human resources. But she received a lot more than just a degree from Davenport. She graduated with unbeatable real-world experience to take into the workplace.

Today, Shaquanda is PHR (Professional in Human Resources) accredited and has been working at Priority Health for the past seven years. She is the human resources manager for Priority Health’s eastern region and oversees all aspects of human resources in Jackson, Saginaw and Farmington Hills. She helps develop and interpret employee policy, streamlines employee relations and works to build the Priority Health culture among employees. “I enjoy learning and have always strived for higher education,” said Shaquanda. “Davenport’s MBA program seemed like the perfect fit for where I was heading with my career. Shaquanda now serves on the advisory board for the School of Business and is an adjunct professor at Davenport University, where she teaches business ethics, undergraduate human resources courses and an MBA course for healthcare organizations. “I live by a few words I once read or saw on a hanger at my drycleaner, and I believe they describe my professional abilities perfectly: ‘You never know how high you are until you are called to rise.’ It never ceases to amaze me how others can see your potential. Many faculty and staff members at Davenport certainly did … and called on me to rise.”
