Rodeo FX wins VES Award for Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects on Birdman Rodeo FX has won a Visual Effects Society (VES) Award for its work on Birdman. The award is for Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects in a Photoreal/Live Action Feature Motion Picture, and is one of the preeminent awards in this industry. Rodeo FX continues its recent run of industry honors, including the Emmy and HPA Awards the facility won in 2014 for the visual effects it created for the TV series Game of Thrones. The VES Award was handed out last night at a black tie event in Beverly Hills to Ara Khanikian, the VFX supervisor, and Ivy Agregan and Isabelle Langlois, the VFX producers on Birdman. The VES Awards recognize outstanding VFX work in film, TV, commercials, and gaming and the VFX producers, supervisors, and artists who create

that work. “This team of visionary filmmakers and artists has invented a new way of making movies,” said Langlois, VFX producer at Rodeo FX. “Audiences don’t realize how much work went into Birdman, which makes this such an extraordinary technical achievement. Ara and I are thrilled to share this award with the amazing team at Rodeo FX who worked so hard on Birdman.” In addition to the obvious VFX in the movie, Rodeo FX was tasked with seamlessly stitching together all the individual scenes to create the illusion that the entire film was shot in one continuous take. “It is so rewarding to create seamless visual effects that serve the story,” said Khanikian, VFX

supervisor at Rodeo FX. “We contribute to the magic of the movie, supporting an amazing story that will carry away the audience with its intense emotional currents.” Birdman was directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu with cinematography by Emmanuel Lubezki and stars Micheal Keaton, Edward Norton, Emma Stone, and Naomi Watts. “Birdman is a real masterpiece, not only because of the storyline and performances, but because of the technical accomplishments of incredible cinematography, editing, and imperceptible visual effects,” said Sébastien Moreau, president of Rodeo FX. “It was an honor to collaborate with these passionate filmmakers on this extraordinary movie.”

DiGiCo SD8 in New Delhi

Two days in mid-November saw a unique festival dedicated to stringed instruments take place in New Delhi, India. Featuring acclaimed string musicians from around the world, a DiGiCo SD8 was on hand to tame the dynamics of a wide array of instruments. The festival was founded and is organised by leading Indian violinist Sharat Chandra Shrivastava of world fusion band Mrigya. Its purpose is not only to perform different forms of string music from around the world, but also to showcase stringed instruments which are either rare or whose use has faded into obscurity. “Originally inspired by Indian classical music and the fusion greats like Pandit Ravi Shankar and Shakti, Mrigya evolved a unique style of music signature that incorporates jazz, blues, rock, folk and other styles overlaid on Hindustani Classical. It was this fusion that led to the idea of Strings of the World,” he says. New Delhi-based M/S Audio Design supplied all the sound and lighting requirements of the festival, including a DiGiCo SD8 console at Front of House, which was manned by

TMBi - 16

Humayun Atiq - DiGiCo Specialist at Hi-Tech Audio Systems - and Sid Mathur of New Delhi’s Quarter Note Studio. With a large number of artists to accommodate, the SD8’s flexibility was the main reason for it being chosen. “The fact that the SD8 features 60 processing channels at either 48kHz/96kHz, all of which are Flexi Channels - and therefore configurable as either mono or stereo means we had the equivalent of 120 channels of full DSP processing at our fingertips,” says Humayun. “Every performance featured a lot of acoustic stringed instruments like cello, upright bass, violin, Hardanger fiddle, cittern and acoustic guitars. They all have a wide dynamic range and had to co-exist with amplified instruments in the mix. The dynamic EQs and multiband compressors of the SD8 really helped to ensure that all the instruments sat well together, without losing any of the tonal light and shade of the strings. “The processing, flexibility and clean preamp sound made the SD8 the ideal mixer for this show.”

Miller Camera Support equipment treks to the Kingdom of Mustang for moving documentary with Grit & Thistle Film Company The documentary tells the tale of a lone Bonpo Monk, Norbu Lama, who is working tirelessly to preserve the traditional Himalayan culture through his teachings to the community’s children. Norbu Lama achieves this goal by teaching about 76 children Tibetan and Bon in the morning and then walks with them across the mountainside to the government school, where they study for six hours before hiking back to continue their studies with Norbu Lama for a few more hours before nighttime.

Alternatively, Ward found the Solo Pod to be useful when navigating through tight corners in classrooms. “The Solo Pod is fairly lightweight and perfect when I need to move fast and maneuver within limited space,” he says. “Since I was trying to keep my rig weight to a minimum, I didn’t use it with a tripod head, but I will add a head to the Solo Pod in the future to open up more options.”

“By keeping the children in the mountains, it allows them to stay connected to their families and their traditional Himalayan culture,” Ward says. “But conditions are harsh. The children have no warm water to bathe or wash their clothes in, there is sporadic electricity and no heat in the dorms despite harsh winter temperatures, and there is no kitchen and no school supplies. Once I visited, I knew I had to get involved to help raise funds, and the short film is the next step in this process.” Over the course of one week, Ward shot the material for this short film operating as part of a twoperson crew and utilizing the Miller DS10 Tripod System and Solo Pod for his camera support. He hired a local to help him with translations and to assist with carrying the gear over the mountains on both horseback and by foot. To shoot cinematic-style, Ward relied on a Canon DLSR camera with Canon L-Series lenses. For interviews, he incorporated a Beachtek mixer and Rode and Sennheiser microphones into his setup.

beneficial during shooting. “The DS10 is just light enough to hike with over huge mountains,” Ward says. “It’s fast and easy to use with a skeleton crew. For instance, a nomad who had never seen a tripod before was able to help me set it up and level it in just a couple of minutes. The two-stage leg system is fast and solid, and you can set up the legs with just one hand. The head is simple, just two settings and simple dials to control pan and tilt.”

In the upcoming weeks, Grit & Thistle Film Company plans to release the short film, promoting it through live presentations across the United States and Europe to spread awareness. “The Himalayas have always been an area of special interest for me, and it was a real opportunity to be able to travel to Lubrak, show up as a total stranger and leave a week later with a rare look at a unique place on our planet,” concludes Ward. “Norbu Lama is working out there every day, in obscurity, to help educate mountain children and maintain Himalayan culture. He could certainly use some assistance and hopefully this film will help connect him with likeminded people.”

approach to encoding," said Bart Spriester, senior vice president, video products, Harmonic. "The Electra X simplifies content delivery operations, enabling video content and service providers to offer linear and multiscreen services from low bandwidth profiles all the way up to UHD. Plus the additional function integration can have a profound impact when deploying new services." Integrating real-time SD and HD encoding, high-quality graphics, branding, and playout functionality, the Electra X2 media processor unifies market-leading video quality, unparalleled function integration, and increased operational flexibility in a single 1-RU appliance. "By converging broadcast and multiscreen encoding with the graphics and branding from Harmonic's Spectrum ChannelPort™ integrated channel playout system, plus transport stream playout functionality, into a single, compact appliance, Electra X2 reduces the number of devices required to build a broadcast transmission chain. This approach lowers capital and operating expenditures, resulting in exceptionally low total cost of ownership (TCO)," continued

Spriester. With the Electra X2 media processor, multiple encoding and playout operations can be controlled from a single interface, making operations easier to set up, manage, and maintain, thereby dramatically lowering TCO. Through its pay-as-you-grow approach to scalability, the nextgeneration media processor assures that users pay only for media processing capabilities they need, enabling them to add new capabilities in the future as business requirements change. The Electra X2 media processor is managed via Harmonic's NMX™ Digital Service Manager, a video network management solution that encompasses a powerful set of tools for monitoring and managing compressed digital media services. When paired with other NMXcontrolled systems, such as Harmonic's ProStream® 9100 highdensity stream processor and ProMedia® X Origin multiscreen media server, the Electra X2 media processor becomes part of a highly scalable, converged solution for the deployment of linear broadcast and OTT video services.

DVEO takes over sales and tech support for RealNetworks® Helix broadcaster products DVEO has announced an agreement with RealNetworks Inc. to take over sales and technical support for RealNetworks' discontinued Helix Broadcaster line of streaming encoder appliances. Former RealNetworks customers can purchase DVEO’s comparable products -- the MultiStreamer™, MPEG Gearbox™, and Brutus™ families of real time encoders, streamers, and transcoders. These products map 100% to the RealNetworks Helix Broadcaster product line. "IPTV operators, telcos, mobile

operators, broadcasters, and Over The Top (OTT) video providers who had chosen RealNetworks will be happy to know that we offer encoders and transcoders in all major video formats, and in several different system configurations," stated Laszlo Zoltan, Vice President of DVEO. "Plus, we will add some very useful new upgrades in the coming months." DVEO will also take over tech support for Helix Broadcaster. Existing RealNetworks customers will continue to receive support services through the term of their

Arkena to deliver NRK online services The national public broadcaster NRK is considered the largest Norwegian streaming service. In 2014, NRK streamed 120 petabytes of data to its audience, and this year NRK expects volume to be over 200 petabytes. "NRK is Norway's largest and most experienced purchaser of CDN services and performed a thorough quality review before deciding on the suppliers. We are both thrilled and proud to have received the top score from NRK and look forward to delivering market leading streaming services to them,"

contracts. "DVEO is absolutely the best qualified company to manage tech support for the Helix Broadcaster product family," said Philip Rutledge, Philip Rutledge, VPHelix, RealNetworks. "This agreement represents a win-win for our customers. They can still purchase similar systems, plus they receive expert assistance for the Helix Broadcaster products they already own." For customers seeking an alternative to RealNetworks’ discontinued Helix Universal Server, DVEO recommends their new multichannel live and VOD media distribution server – the Atlas Media Server™. The system ingests MPEG-2, H.264, and/or H.265/HEVC live streams over IP, then "grooms" the streams by adding wrappers such as MPEG-DASH, HLS, or RTMP, plus subtitles for closed captions or multiple languages. It outputs the live streams and simultaneously stores the streams as VOD files. The Atlas Media Server is available in three different sizes.

says Richard Löfgreen, Managing Director at Arkena Norway.

NRK is upgrading its streaming platform. In parallel, NRK puts a final touch to a new streaming structure where the selected CDN providers will be integrated even closer to ensure a better and more stable service. "This is a great opportunity for Arkena. We will be constantly benchmarked for quality against the other two selected CDN vendors, and we know that NRK is going to compare us closely to optimize traffic flow," says Löfgreen, while also emphasizing that "it is wise for such a large media corporation as NRK to focus on structuring a solid, future-proof online platform with strong redundancy and capacity."

KBS Radio with new Lawo-equipped master control room As part of its ongoing modernization, Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) has installed Lawo equipment in its master control room (MCR) for a new server-based infrastructure to replace more than ten-year-old technology. Altogether, 14 Nova17 MkII routing systems will be part of KBS’ new era of radio broadcast in combination with VisTool workplaces for visualization and control. The concept behind the project is to establish a state-of-the-art and fully redundant system of core radio broadcast facilities, along with a user-friendly and efficient operation, and sophisticated monitoring and alarm management. An additional benefit is that certain functions no longer need to be accessed via external devices, but are integrated within the Lawo equipment. For each of seven radio stations, KBS installed main and backup Nova17 routers; with two VisTool systems and two KSC control panels. This setup provides full redundancy for each control room.

TMBi - 24

The radio engineering team is particularly impressed by the customization of the VisTool user interface with regard to page layout and logic functions that can be easily configured by the end-user. The system status of the seven programs is monitored by two log servers via SNMP, handing over the status to SNMP monitor software from Korean Software house, ADSoft. This is controlled by a Korean APC solution, while the audio file system is from French company

Dalet. Since adopting the new Lawo technology and infrastructure, KBS has benefitted greatly from the integration and user-friendliness of the VisTool operating software. The broadcaster’s teams can carry out configurations without specialist knowledge, and enjoy the efficient, smart and well laid-out design. The system is being tested during the winter months, and is going onair in stages since January 2015.

Tapeless turnkey TV solution with digitisation services In September 2013, following a call for tender, BCE was selected by EBC (previously ERTA) for the upgrade of their infrastructure to a high definition (HD) and tapeless facility in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia). Taking a step into the future, EBC is now the first Ethiopian media organisation with a state-of-the-art digital workflow. Working with strong partners such as Grass Valley®, Oracle® (Front Porch Digital®), Aveco® and Octopus®, BCE was in charge of the integration of a newsroom, post-production editing rooms, a broadcast platform with master control as well as the digitisation of their archives. “Following our strategy to offer our services to the MENA market, BCE has committed to installing state-of-the-art platforms to media customers using its expertise and its trusted supplier’s network. This major evolution of their infrastructure will drive the company to a leading position on the

Ethiopian media market”, comments Frederic Fievez, Manager Special Projects at BCE.

FROM

DIGITISATION TO

A NEW TAPELESS

HD

INFRASTRUCTURE As holders of the legacy archives of Ethiopia’s public broadcasting, EBC needed to digitise their content in order to preserve it and to make it accessible for new programmes. As part of this preservation process, EBC also needed a new postproduction platform to edit this content and prepare it for content repurposing and other productions.

After a call for tender, BCE, in partnership with Grass Valley®, was selected for the integration of this infrastructure. BCE, thanks to its strong experience in mass content digitisation for important European media players as well as international content producers and TV channels, was able to answer rapidly to their demand. BCE’s experts were able to install the platform and also train EBC staff to work in this new environment. Following the first preview of BCE’s work steps, the EBC presented to BCE a more complete and more complex infrastructure to be installed. EBC needed to follow European standards in terms of video quality and digital content management. With the strong support of Grass Valley®, Oracle® (Front Porch Digital®), Aveco® and Octopus®, BCE updated the complete workflow of the public Broadcaster, including the ingest platform, the news production, the postproduction editing suites, the multi-playout infrastructure and a disaster recovery platform for ingest, the edition and the production and broadcast archive. As a pioneer in tapeless infrastructure and digitisation processes, BCE holds one of the largest video and audio digitisation platforms in Europe. We are able to digitise more than 50 000 hours of videos per year, the engineers can also install provisory platforms in the customer’s premises as well as full turnkey solution anywhere in the world. BCE ensures stability and the transfer of knowledge to the future team.

THREE

STEPS TO

ENSURE A SEAMLESS LAUNCH Taking its first major step in Africa, BCE needed to ensure the perfect installation for its customer. To do so, BCE changed its classical way of working with integration. “Working with EBC demonstrates BCE’s capacity to adapt to any market. It’s a real step forward for the broadcasting market in Africa and a strong evolution for our customer,” comments Jean Lampach, CTDO of BCE. Taking advantage of its strong infrastructure in Luxembourg, with extended room for projects, BCE decided to install the complete platform of the customer in Luxembourg in order to prepare it for the local team. Being able to work directly in Luxembourg is a big advantage to ensure immediate availability of material, drastically reduce the costs and accelerate the integration. With the complete solution installed in Luxembourg, BCE’s engineers were able to ensure it was working properly and prepare it for EBC’s building with all the pre-cabling done. “Having the complete customer infrastructure was a fantastic way to reduce the time between each step of the project. Our engineers were immediately available to configure and update the systems, and our technology experts were able to give the right information to EBC’s team present in Luxembourg with direct interaction with their system,” comments Sven Weisen, Manager Special Projects at BCE. During this first integration in Luxembourg, EBC’s team came to Luxembourg to be trained directly on their new platform. The dual status of BCE as both broadcaster

and integrator was a real advantage for EBC as they could benefit from high quality training sessions from our top broadcast executives, ensuring the best transfer of knowledge for the continuity of their work. Since their platform was fully built in BCE’s premises, the team has been trained to use their new tools, avoiding the need for any time to adapt to the future installation in Africa. “It’s exciting for us to collaborate with EBC because it marks the first time GV STRATUS is being used in a broadcast newsroom setting in Africa,” said Said Bacho, Senior Vice President, EMEA, Grass Valley. “Africa is a vibrant and growing market, and we are committed to providing broadcasters there with the most sophisticated gear for professional use today. As our solutions are both flexible and scalable, they allow EBC to invest in technology for the future while also maximising cost efficiencies and streamlining workflow.” Meanwhile a large volume of EBC legacy content transited to BCE in order to be digitised in BCE’s mass digitisation platform. This was to accelerate the launch of the channel with ready-to-

broadcast content already available in the customer’s digital library. The platform was then moved to Ethiopia where BCE’s experts teamed up with the local architects and EBC’s team to reassemble the parts of the pre-configured platform. The local team finished their training on site as well with BCE experts. “In collaboration with Grass Valley, BCE took its first major step in Africa. Thanks to an off-site preinstallation in Luxembourg, our team succeeded in seamlessly delivering, in a cost-effective way, a high-achieving platform to EBC.” commented Frédéric Lemaire, CEO of BCE. Less than a year after the beginning of the work, the new platform was ready. To ensure a seamless start, BCE provided assistance during the launch and during the first weeks of operations. BCE will also provide remote assistance all year through its Network Operations Centre (NOC) based in Luxembourg, available 24/7. “The work of BCE exceeded all EBC’s expectations” commented EBC. For decades, the name Sennheiser has been synonymous with high-quality products, excellent sound and numerous innovations that have set new standards in audio technology. This year, the audio specialist is celebrating its 70th anniversary. It remains a family-owned and -operated enterprise, now headed by a third generation of the Sennheiser family: today’s CEOs, Daniel Sennheiser and Dr. Andreas Sennheiser, are the grandchildren of the company’s founder, Prof. Dr. Fritz Sennheiser.

The list of product innovations from Sennheiser is as extensive as it is impressive. Sennheiser has made a significant impact on the evolution of audio technology over the past seven decades, from the world’s very first open headphones, the HD 414, to present-day innovations such as the Digital

TMBi - 56

9000 wireless microphone system and MobileConnect, an inclusive audio-streaming solution for people with sight and hearing impairments. Numerous patents and awards – including an Emmy, a Grammy, a Scientific and Engineering Award of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and the Engineering

Emmy‘s® Philo T. Farnsworth Award – bear witness to the company’s unique innovative drive. “In the past, our products have surprised and amazed the audio world over and over again. Why? Because they have gone beyond the common standard. As a result, nobody anticipated them,” says Dr. Andreas Sennheiser, who is coCEO of the company alongside his brother Daniel Sennheiser.

THE

BEGINNINGS

The company was founded on 1 June 1945 as Laboratorium Wennebostel – or “Labor W” for short – by electrical engineer Prof. Dr. Fritz Sennheiser in Wennebostel, near Hanover, Germany. Initially, the young enterprise produced tube volt meters. They sold well, but Fritz Sennheiser had higher ambitions: Driven by the ethos of making good existing products even better while advancing new technologies, the lab developed a constant stream of

new solutions. The product range gradually expanded over the years. In 1947, Sennheiser launched its first microphone developed inhouse. The first “shotgun” microphone followed in 1956, and a year later the company was already producing 100 different types of products. In early 1958, Labor W was renamed Sennheiser electronic – the inception of a brand that ten years later would spark a worldwide boom by developing and producing the first open headphones.

SECOND AND SENNHEISER

THIRD

GENERATION In May 1982, Sennheiser saw its first change of generations. Prof. Dr. Jörg Sennheiser, son of Prof. Dr. Fritz Sennheiser, was appointed Managing Director, while his father became a limited partner. Over the years, Prof. Dr. Jörg Sennheiser gradually modernized and inter–nationalized the company’s structure, turning Sennheiser into a GmbH & Co. KG. Cutting-edge developments across various areas of acoustics, and new sales locations worldwide, followed with unprecedented momentum. Sennheiser opened an additional production plant in Tullamore, Ireland, and a branch office for research and development in the

USA. An additional plant followed in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA, and a joint venture with Denmark’s William Demant Holding was initiated, forging a path for the founding of Sennheiser Communications A/S in 2003. In July 2013, Daniel Sennheiser and Dr. Andreas Sennheiser, the sons of Prof. Dr. Jörg Sennheiser, took over as the CEOs of Sennheiser electronic GmbH & Co. KG. Both share their grandfather and father’s entrepreneurial ambition of aiming to shape the entire audio sector through a dynamic culture of innovation and an uncompromised passion for excellence. Thanks to this spirit, Labor W, a start-up based in a halftimbered house in Wennebostel, has grown to become a global player, sustaining a continual increase in turnover over the decades. Today, Sennheiser has more than 2,700 employees, with around half of them based in Germany. In 2013, the family company, whose Management Board still regards independence as a core value, generated turnover of €590.4 million.

A SMART

APPROACH

TO THE FUTURE As an innovation-driven company, Sennheiser will continue playing a

key role in shaping the future of audio. The foundations for this have already been laid with its new Innovation Campus, built on the company site in Germany. “Here, as at our worldwide innovation centres, we will work in crossfunctional teams that bring together our breadth of expertise to shape unique solutions, such as ones to individualize audio content even more,” Daniel Sennheiser explains. “In the future, we will align our product development even more closely to customers’ true needs, wherever they arise – on live stages, at professional studio productions, in offices, or simply while listening to music and relaxing – while always striving to achieve acoustic perfection.” With adaptable and increasingly smart products, Sennheiser will keep on developing and delivering future solutions that redefine audio technology. TV Skyline chose Ikegami HDK97ARRI cameras to broadcast the recent PUR & Friends 2014 annual concert from the massive Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen. Working in partnership with Neoxfilm, TV Skyline captured the performance for transmission by executive producer, Sky Germany. "Formed in 1975, PUR is a highly innovative and popular rock group with many best-selling albums to its credit," comments TV Skyline founder Wolfgang Reeh. "Our objective was to capture the full excitement of this very high-profile musical event for television viewers. We naturally needed images that would reflect the dynamism of the music. "The Veltins Arena is the home ground of the Bundesliga club Schalke 04. It has a retractable pitch which was taken up for the

duration of the concert. The roof was closed to achieve the best possible acoustics. The stage itself was illuminated with controlled lighting which also extended over the seated and promenading audience. "We have 22 Ikegami HDK-97A cameras in our fleet. They have given excellent results in every project we have worked on, whether shooting at wide angle, mid-range or high-magnification close-up zoom. To get maximum impact from the PUR & Friends stage shots, we deployed three HDK-97ARRI camera heads: one at the stage rim, one on a dolly and one on a crane. "The HDK-97ARRI is based on the Ikegami HDK-97A docking camera head and incorporates extra features developed for digital film-making. These include a larger

Super 35 sensor which delivers cinematic depth of field, clean highlights, extremely low noise and very natural skin tones. The HDK97ARRI is fully compatible with our HDK-97A infrastructure, using the same base station, CCU and cable interfaces, so everything connected together very easily. "Intercutting between the HDK97A and HDK-97ARRI cameras in our coverage of the PUR & Friends concert allowed us to combine the realism and immediacy of a high quality outside broadcast with the extra impact associated with digital cinematography. "Particularly impressive was the HDK-97ARRI's dynamic and lownoise rendering of the performers's high-contrast clothing, from dark areas of clothing through to very vibrant highlights. The client producer was also delighted so we

have high hopes of winning the contract to televise PUR's 30th anniversary concert this year." "Selecting Ikegami’s HDK97ARRI Super 35 cameras was a key element of the creative realisation," adds Neoxfilm's Creative Director Marc Schütrumpf. "We relied on early planning and arrangements, choosing the right lenses and optimal camera positions. By maintaining a constant lens aperture, the depth of field could be permanently kept shallow. By using the optimum focal lengths, we were able to generate a cinematic look that brought the PUR concert at its most impressive into every viewer's home." Jointly developed by Ikegami and ARRI, the HDK-97ARRI is a broadcast-style production camera with digital cinema characteristics enabling a large format sensor to be deployed in multiple camera operation. Centered around ARRI's Super 35 CMOS sensor and its associated support circuitry, the

system provides cinematic qualities including natural colour rendering, exceptional dynamic range and progressive frame rates such as 23.98p. Broadcast-grade distribution can be performed using the latest Ikegami technology, via fibre transmission using up to 2 kilometres of SMPTE hybrid fibre and cable. The ARRI large-format front end is famed for its film-like organic look, characterised by extended, clean highlights, an extremely low noise floor, natural skin tones, excellent colour separation and a cinematic depth-of-field. Employing large pixels and a custom-designed read-out architecture, it delivers exceptionally wide dynamic range. ARRI’s stainless steel lens mount system ensures super stable flange focal depth between lens and sensor. The HDK-97ARRI is housed in a docking style camera head from Ikegami's successful Unicam HD camera series. Powered by

Ikegami’s latest 3G FPGA-based DSP, the camera provides complete real time control of all grey-scale, colour, and detail functions. A new 3G transmission system transports video from camera head to CCU, as well as 3G transmission from CCU to camera head. The camera head supports return video in HD, two channels of prompter video in SD, and (when using the CCU-970M) one channel of prompter video in HD. Other signals transported via the camera cable include two channels of intercom, two channels of programme audio, two channels of microphone audio, genlock phase control, camera control, and external auxiliary data. Ikegami’s powerful 200-series remote control system enables video operators to manage multiple cameras using OCP, MCP, and network hubs.

This configuration on the same monitor allows us to easily manage the levels of video sources that we use in this production, making natural settings for control of cameras seeing reflected with vivid clarity on the monitor, and I did not detect problems at work and monitor response. In the second displayed signal I wanted to monitor on a given field video line, a feature included with this monitor that allows me to easily select the video line to check and monitor the data provided for faults. On this position I did a test for temperature and stress along 48 hours. For which was injected video / audio signal on each input with loop video standard patterns and modified patterns, forcing levels of luminance and chrominance to check if it altered in some measure the sample and monitor display, for measurements on screen using a professional calibrator and its associated software, always on the same position. The results after 15 hours testing were represented by a variation of 0.01% over the initial levels of monitoring and signal processing, the signal values remained quite stable during this period. Personally I will say that I find some extremely good data

when compared to the alternatives in the market. Once done this test to other brand products offer a far superior error was obtained in comparison with the monitor Plura.

Once this first field test , the feeling of operators who could work with this monitor was overwhelming, highlighting the quality of the image and offered them operational con-

CONCLUSION We are facing am extremely good equipment, for the versatility offered by the signals that can be analyzed and complementary functions that normally are not integrated in this type of monitor, with its robustness and price, is becoming one of the best options if we need to analyze and monitor video and audio signals. This laboratory is just a small sample of what they can do and their settings. I invite all our readers to visit Plura website, where you will find out all the details and possibilities offered. Thanks to IB3TV for the use of

trol and measurement of two independent signals on the same monitor. I also installed the monitor on a quality control position in the Master Control Room, where all incoming & outcoming signals of the TV Station are controlled. We placed a reflection of this monitor on the position of the technical supervisor where the management software allowed us to perform sampling data to generate quality reports on the different monitored signals. Three memories were performed on the monitor to visualize in a quick manner all necessary parameters for this quality control. Again, the PRM- 217-3G monitor demonstrated its ability to provide a quick interpretation of the received signals and to manage the checking of quality. Having the ability to perform the calibration settings for several standardized measurement equipment in the broadcast market, this added an additional value on the reliability of the monitor.

WHAT IS MISSED The reality on Plura Monitor PRM- 217-3G is that nothing is missing , but I would appreciate the inclusion of external power supply within the basic purchase-package.

their facilities to perform these tests and to my colleagues for sharing their concerns to work with it, as well as Plura Europe GmbH for the transfer of equipment to perform this test.
