RTVS Slovakia chooses NOA for major cross-media archive Initiative RTVS, Slovakia’s national broadcaster, has embarked on a project to upgrade its archive system and create a national TV archive that includes its legacy SD material. The project will use NOA systems to build a complete MAM facility to manage all ingest workflows and transcoding, with logical content description, and full integration of radio and TV content. The installation includes four NOA Framelector machines for the ingest of SD Video with complete RF monitoring control, and a five-server transcoding farm based upon MediaButler for export from lossless ffv1 towards the production formats in use at RTVS, including IMXD10, XDCAM, DVCPRO and others. A set of mediARC file management tools – FileManager, Remote File Agent, Storage Connector – will handle transparent OAIS File management and replication between WAN sites. A four-server QC analysis farm using VidCHECK with Quantum StorNext AEL6000 complete the upgrade to the RTVS facility. As part of the technical solution a clustered Oracle ODA metadata repository will be shared over WAN together with a possibility to share all essence files, through an intelligent cacheing mechanism supported via NOA RemoteFileAgent (RFA). RTVS chose a NOA solution for SD Video particularly for its ability to create mathematically lossless archive files based upon ffv1, and for its RF logging of ingested material for perfect quality control. The NOA installation will be integrated through standard XML and file gateways with metadata management

and provides a mediARC API for live replication towards external RTVS repositories. “This new installation will give us a complete archive-centric view on all kinds of production creation,” said Vladimir Hübner, Project Manager at RTVS. “Our aim is also to share existing metadata description and the metadata repository for better semantic linking of content crossmedia – both radio and TV.” NOA Audio’s mediARC has gained a strong base of users in both broadcasting and institutional archiving, and the system’s ability to meet the needs of archivists and production teams is especially useful when the two roles are required within the same organisation. Watson Nordic taps Agama for End-to-End OTT multiscreen service assurance Agama Technologies announced that it has been contracted by Watson Nordic, a Finnish OTT multiscreen video service provider, to provide its DTV Monitoring Solution for real-time monitoring, assurance and analytics of the service distribution from creation to consumption. Watson Nordic, a joint venture between telecommunications company Anvia and video rental company Makuuni, produces and develops broadband delivered TV and entertainment services. Its multiscreen service, launched in 2013 and available for television sets, tablets, smart phones and computers, allows subscribers to watch TV, rent movies and subscribe to pay-TV channels according to their taste whenever and however they want. Aiming to become one of the most popular TV services in Finland, Watson Nordic will now implement a full-coverage solution from Agama to ensure optimal service quality, reach higher operational efficiency and get better customer understanding - ultimately to secure a rapid and cost-effective service growth. The new regional sales manager appointments amplify GatesAir’s customer-first approach across the Middle East, North Africa, Eastern Europe and the Asia-Pacific at a time when many countries in these regions are undergoing digital TV and radio transitions. Jason Mak joins the Singapore office as regional sales manager for Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific Islands and the ASEAN countries, which include Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand. TF1 commits to Apantac multiviewers Apantac announced that French TV Broadcaster, TF1, purchased its TAHOMA Multiviewers for its main facility in Paris. The pre sales and sales support was managed by long-time Apantac partner, Magic Hour. The purchase includes a TAHOMA DE-16 "Universal" Multiviewer, a DL-4+12 "Hybrid" Multiviewer, and a Cynergy license, Apantac's light Client Server Virtual KVM switch application. The Apantac multiviewers feed a 3x2 display wall with six large high resolution LCD monitors. The Multiviewers are installed in TF1's "cockpit" control room, a centrally location whereby the technical team can monitor signals and equipment throughout the main TF1 facility including: SDI outputs from Multiviewers used in studios, continuity, for off-air monitoring, VGA signals from the SNMP manager with a real time logs of alarms and equipment status view, DVI signals from the playlist computer, VGA and DVI signals from various computers managing glueware, matrices, or displaying a transmitters' status map, real time audience as well as a
rasterizer output.

DiGiCo makes Pharrell happy at Montreux Montreux Jazz Festival takes place annually on the glorious setting of Lake Geneva. It has played host to the who's who of music since its inception, almost half-a-century ago, with acts as eclectic as Miles Davis and Marcus Miller, to Alicia Keys and, this year, Pharrell Williams, and they always come back for more! DiGiCo consoles a key component across the Festival’s audio system, with Pharrell also bringing in his own SD7. “My relationship with DiGiCo has always been strong, not only because of the quality of product, but because of the personal service we always get from their team,” says sound coordinator at Montreux, David Weber. Incidentally, Weber made his Montreux debut the same

year as DiGiCo, in 2009. “I was brought in here as they needed someone who wasn't going to be heavily involved with the business side of Montreux – just the music; they needed someone that was into the festival, and would concentrate solely on the audio. So, I specified in DiGiCo consoles, Meyer Sound loudspeakers, and Shure microphones, which together is a fantastic mix. DiGiCo is on all of the stages here at Montreux; it's the perfect solution, and the reliability has been superb, we've had no issues at all. In fact, I like the consoles that much I've even bought my own SD9! It's on one of the festival stages at the moment, and when we've wrapped the event up, it's coming home with me!”
It's not just Weber that thinks like this. Pharrell's FOH and monitor pairing, Kyle Hamilton and Jeremy Peters, are adamant that they could not deliver their show accurately using anything other than DiGiCo kit and brought in their own pair of SD7s for Montreux. “It's about finding a consistency with Pharrell and using the SD7s, we're able to do that,” reveals Hamilton, adding that the effects inside the desk are of the highest order. “Pharrell's vocal chain just hits an Avalon 737 compressor, then heads straight into the console, where I do my EQing, effects, and compression. Because the preamps and processing are great on the SD7, that's really all I need to do, which suits me, as less is more is always my preferred approach.”

Fletcher Sports shoots continuous Ultra-Motion 4K for Baseball and NBA with I-MOVIX X10 UHD Chicago-based sports production specialists Fletcher Sports has completed the first season of major league baseball and NBA coverage using the I-MOVIX X10 technology and plan to use its new fleet of X10 UHD systems over the next season to come. Deploying the X10 technology, Fletcher Sports provided continuous recording in 300fps or 600fps to broadcasters Major League Baseball, and ESPN for the NBA coverage. The X10 system’s compact size allowed Fletcher crews to provide innovative angles from cameras located behind the basketball backboard. “With continuous recording in 1080p at up to 600fps, replays really look a lot better than anything you can get with the standard 60fps system, where there's a lot of motion blur,” said Dan Grainge, VP of Fletcher Sports Chicago. “You can tell if a player's over the line, whether he has possession of the ball and so on. Before using the X10 UHD, it was difficult to do that because you didn’t have all the frames to play with. But now you can slow down any action, reducing motion blur to zero.”

Cobalt Digital has announced that Matrix Engineering Group of Moscow (Russia) has recently installed a significant complement of Cobalt gear at TV-Gyberniya as part of the network’s new HD studio. TV-Gyberniya is based in Voronezh, Russia and broadcasts to more than 2 million residents. A mix of Cobalt’s card-based products and Blue Box Group™ throw down modules were selected to form the core of the studio’s signal processing, conversions and distribution functions. The configuration comprises both video (HD/SDSDI) and audio (analog) distribution amplifiers, HD/SD-SDI audio embedders, and the new 9501DCDA down converter/distribution amplifier. Four openGear® HPF-9000 frames house the cards and and are controlled by the DashBoard™ control and management system. New EX-60 Expansion Chassis Boosts Density and Scalability of DISK Archive Corporation’s ALTO Disk Archive Corporation has launched a new expansion chassis for its ALTO tapeless long-term storage system. The EX-60 Storage Expansion for the ALTO Archive and Content Library meets the growing demand for larger capacity and more densely packed media storage. ALTO’s disk-based cold storage solution can accommodate up to 275 TB of storage in each 5RU module, with an exceptionally low power dissipation of around 1 watt per Terabyte. The expanded installation includes four outdoor locations, which include the ESPN Domestic and International announce booths; and two locations in the main stadium at the U.S. Tennis Center in Flushing, Queens in New York City. The FLDA design for ESPN is notable for its ability to leverage a green production standard, using a completely LED installation, and creating enough light to counteract the sun’s brightness for the outdoor

Gemini FX purchases three Pablo Rio 4K color and finishing systems Gemini FX, the Chennai-based digital film operation and part of the giant Gemini Industries and Imaging group, has purchased three turnkey Quantel Pablo Rio 4K color and finishing systems. One of the systems is equipped with the Neo color panel, and two with compact Neo Nano panels. Utilizing Broadpeak's server and CDN manager solutions that support the HEVC compression standard and set-top boxes, Chunghwa Telecom cost-effectively delivers 4K VOD and NVOD content to a wide range of devices, while ensuring a superior quality of service to customers. "Streaming video content with a 4K resolution takes up a lot of data. NOA’s new Videoscanner solves long-term access Conundrum for archive owners To overcome the lack of a market-dominant lossless archive format with wide vendor support, NOA’s VideoScanner uses a combination of mathematically lossless formats based on royalty-free open source technology to create lossless encoded files in the native source pixelformats (8bit 4:2:0 – 10bit 4:4:4) Future access to these formats is assured indefinitely, and decoders are available today for every computer operating system. VideoScanner imports most MXF OP1a and AVI files in a wide range of codecs (AVC Intra50/100, VC-3 [DNxHD], XDCAM HD 422, IMX D-10, FFv1, FFvHuff, …) together with up to 32 audio channels to produce the normalized archive. The lossless base format guarantees that copies subsequently created in production formats will always be supplied at the highest quality, and never suffer from lossyto-lossy transcodings.
To streamline the ingest process and further future-proof the archives created, VideoScanner creates a shot-detected index of the content and extracts all relevant technical metadata including timecode and source format properties. The IP Grooming Server™ 50ch 1TB streams multiple video and audio files from the on board one terabyte hard drive, with scheduled playlists. The IP Grooming Server is a media capture and playout server. It stores transport streams, then "grooms" them by transcoding the streams to H.264 and/or scaling the video to different resolutions. It also adds various "wrappers" such as HLS, RTMP, etc. The Linux® based system outputs up to 50 streams at
the same time, with different bit rates and wrappers for each stream. The input of the stored content typically arrives via FTP file transfer, and the files to be played are stored on the server. Orad will unveil at IBC2014 its new 3Designer Adobe After Effects (AE) plugin. The unique 3Designer plugin lets graphics artists easily bring common AE design elements such as keyframed animations, textures and materials into the powerful Orad 3Designer authoring software. The new integration also allows users to assign data exports from within AE, ensuring templates created in AE receive data updates while on-air with real-time data. “Orad’s new integration elminates a critical gap in the graphics production workflow,” comments Avi Sharir, CEO and president, Orad. “Until now, After Effects designers would create motion graphics primarily for pre-visualization and post-production. For on-air broadcasts, these designs would have to be re-created in the authoring software. With the new 3Designer plugin, artists can export AE projects into 3Designer. There is no need to recreate elements, thus saving a tremendous amount of time.” Thanks to the 3Designer plugin, Adobe After Effects scene elements can be opened directly inside Orad’s 3Designer authoring software where additional edits can be made and sent to air.
News and Sports LiveTouch will be launched at IBC. LiveTouch is a scalable studio highlights system comprising a new server, a new software client, a new panel and new middleware that links clients with content across a server cluster. The panel is purpose-designed to make highlights selection sure, simple and robust. Enterprise sQ production systems get a raft of editor improvements, as well as a new eight port version of sQ Record that saves space in crowded galleries and machine rooms. There’s support for XAVC media across the system in both automated and manual workflows and new support for 4K media. Also new is Fileflow 2 which adds more flexibility, easier IT integration and a faster workflow to Enterprise sQ file i/o. Key improvements are roles-based user accounts making it easier to manage the system, new security features such as folder-based credentials, and FTP client support making it easier to integrate into large IT systems. Production Everywhere QTube will include a new browser-based InterSite workflow that makes it easier than ever before to add InterSite operations to Enterprise sQ systems. Post Production Genetic Engineering 2 is making its European debut at IBC 2014. GE2 is Quantel’s shared storage solution for post that delivers new levels of flexibility, performance and productivity for Quantel Pablo Rio color and finishing system users. GE2 has already proved itself as the 4K production hub at the 2014 FIFA World Cup™, producing 4K 60p highlights packages for worldwide distribution by Sony as well as working on the official FIFA 4K World Cup film promos. The sixth new software release this year for Quantel’s Pablo Rio high quality color and finishing software will be on show at IBC, continuing Pablo Rio’s development as the finishing system of choice for 4K and beyond. Screen Stand 1.C49 Screen’s OTT/Web Subtitling Solution Now Supports LIVE Web Video Subtitling Global subtitling technology specialist Screen Systems has just announced that they will be offering a real-time demonstration of their live web video subtitling solution at IBC. Last year Screen announced the launch of the development of a method for served web video playback to ensure that subtitles are always displayed in the position and style intended on web and OTT content, whilst allowing viewers to select from several language streams without the need to reencode the video or host multiple copies of media. Roland will be exhibiting the recently launched XS Series of multi format AV matrix switchers at IBC, ideal for high quality, long distance transmission of audio and video content to displays. The XS Series supports eight HDMI, RGB/Component/S-video/Composite inputs and up to four HDMI or HDBaseT outputs with scalers to support picture-in-picture, resizing, rotating, and flipping. Audio can be embedded into outputs via 8 stereo audio inputs (2 mic) and/or HDMI audio as well as de-embedded on output. The XS-84 is capable of switching four video lines as a group, enabling configuration of a 4K system. Switching a mixture of video feeds that includes 4K, HD, and SD sizes as well as up to WUXGA and other computer video formats is also possible. The Roland AR-3000SD recorder/players offers advanced sound quality and network control features including programmable timers, improved network efficiency and support for multiple playback and control formats. Suitable for broadcast announcements, for use as part of larger installed sound systems which require recorded playback or for automated event productions, the AR Series of recorder/players from Roland are widely used in train stations, airports, shopping centres, amusement parks and museums around the world.
A challenging, yet much sought after solution to subtitling live web video however has just been developed by the company and will be demonstrated at IBC this September. One example is of a linear broadcast simulcast on the web. In a live web video the player cannot correctly report the current play position within the video, since this differs for each viewer depending on when they ‘switched on’. Additionally, each viewer may choose to pause or rewind live video stream (if this feature is provided). Screen has therefore developed a different synchronisation mechanism, while still using image based subtitles from a separate server. In Screen’s solution, some low bandwidth timing information is added to the video stream and used to synchronise subtitles to the frames of video the viewer is watching. The ‘script’ at the viewer’s device can obtain the current frame's time value from the video stream and use it to determine when subtitles, should be displayed from the subtitle server. An advantage of the Screen solution is that the same general mechanism of image based subtitles held on a separate server can be used for consistent broadcast quality subtitling of both Video on Demand and live web video. ZEISS LOXIA 2/35 AND LOXIA 2/50 LENSES FOR S ONY A LPHA 7/7R/7S The ZEISS lenses Loxia 2/35 and Loxia 2/50 are the first members of a new family of manual focus lenses for the E-mount full frame. They are optimized for digital sensors and electronic viewfinders and feature a mechanical aperture setting and the mechanical deactivation of the click stop (de-click) for ambitious videography. “Ever since the Sony Alpha 7/7r/7s helped compact system cameras break through to the full frame, there has been a growing desire for a ‘digital manual focus‘ experience that combines the best of both worlds. The Loxia 2/35 and Loxia 2/50 are the first members of a new family of manual focus lenses for the E-mount full frame. By entering this field, ZEISS not only wants to meet this desire, but exceed it,” said Christophe Casenave, Product Manager at ZEISS Camera Lenses. Freedom of composition in photography was the guiding principle in developing the ZEISS Loxia 2/35 and ZEISS Loxia 2/50. manual focusing, the Loxia 2/35 and Loxia 2/50 are also suitable for professional video productions. Both Loxia lenses have a high speed of f/2, which expands the creative possibilities even more. Two examples are the effective isolation of motifs with a low depth of field or free-handed photography, even with poor lighting conditions. The Loxia lenses offer a high resolution across the entire image field and a harmonious bokeh in the background, especially at the maximal aperture opening of f/2. The Loxia family stands out for its superb mechanical quality. The smooth focus operation with a large focus rotation angle of approximately 180 degrees allows for the finest variations in focusing.
The filter diameter is a consistent M52 across the entire lens family. The PXW-X70 features a 1.0 type Exmor® R CMOS Sensor with a resolution of 20 megapixels.
