RTVS Slovakia chooses NOA for major cross-media archive Initiative RTVS, Slovakia’s national broadcaster, has embarked on a project to upgrade its archive system and create a national TV archive that includes its legacy SD material. The project will use NOA systems to build a complete MAM facility to manage all ingest workflows and transcoding, with logical content description, and full integration of radio and TV content. The installation includes four NOA Framelector machines for the ingest of SD Video with complete RF monitoring control, and a five-server transcoding farm based upon MediaButler for export from lossless ffv1 towards the production formats in use at RTVS, including IMXD10, XDCAM, DVCPRO and others. A set of mediARC file management tools – FileManager, Remote File Agent, Storage Connector – will handle transparent OAIS File management and replication between WAN sites. A four-server QC analysis farm using VidCHECK with Quantum StorNext AEL6000 complete the upgrade to the RTVS facility. As part of the technical solution a clustered Oracle ODA metadata repository will be shared over WAN together with a possibility to share all essence files, through an intelligent cacheing mechanism supported via NOA RemoteFileAgent (RFA). RTVS chose a NOA solution for SD Video particularly for its ability to create mathematically lossless archive files based upon ffv1, and for its RF logging of ingested material for perfect quality control. The NOA installation will be integrated through standard XML and file gateways with metadata management

and provides a mediARC API for live replication towards external RTVS repositories. “This new installation will give us a complete archive-centric view on all kinds of production creation,” said Vladimir Hübner, Project Manager at RTVS. “Our aim is also to share existing metadata description and the metadata repository for better semantic linking of content crossmedia – both radio and TV.” NOA Audio’s mediARC has gained a strong base of users in both broadcasting and institutional archiving, and the system’s ability to meet the needs of archivists and production teams is especially useful when the two roles are required within the same organisation. Providing customers with structured and flexible high-performance content management that will last for decades, mediARC allows access to a deep level of the database and makes it easy to create extremely specific business processes using complex and sophisticated workflows. “We are thrilled to be involved in such a large and complex installation,” said Christophe Kummer, CEO of NOA Audio Solutions. “Our simple-to-use video modules for the transcription of large volumes of SD material get such a good market share because not many competitors are able to provide easy workflow systems for video which are so well linked to a central, well-managed metadata repository.”

DiGiCo makes Pharrell happy at Montreux Montreux Jazz Festival takes place annually on the glorious setting of Lake Geneva. It has played host to the who's who of music since its inception, almost half-a-century ago, with acts as eclectic as Miles Davis and Marcus Miller, to Alicia Keys and, this year, Pharrell Williams, and they always come back for more! DiGiCo consoles a key component across the Festival’s audio system, with Pharrell also bringing in his own SD7. “My relationship with DiGiCo has always been strong, not only because of the quality of product, but because of the personal service we always get from their team,” says sound coordinator at Montreux, David Weber. Incidentally, Weber made his Montreux debut the same

TMBi - 14

year as DiGiCo, in 2009. “I was brought in here as they needed someone who wasn't going to be heavily involved with the business side of Montreux – just the music; they needed someone that was into the festival, and would concentrate solely on the audio. So, I specified in DiGiCo consoles, Meyer Sound loudspeakers, and Shure microphones, which together is a fantastic mix. DiGiCo is on all of the stages here at Montreux; it's the perfect solution, and the reliability has been superb, we've had no issues at all. In fact, I like the consoles that much I've even bought my own SD9! It's on one of the festival stages at the moment, and when we've wrapped the event up, it's coming home with me!”

It's not just Weber that thinks like this. Pharrell's FOH and monitor pairing, Kyle Hamilton and Jeremy Peters, are adamant that they could not deliver their show accurately using anything other than DiGiCo kit and brought in their own pair of SD7s for Montreux. “It's about finding a consistency with Pharrell and using the SD7s, we're able to do that,” reveals Hamilton, adding that the effects inside the desk are of the highest order. “Pharrell's vocal chain just hits an Avalon 737 compressor, then heads straight into the console, where I do my EQing, effects, and compression. Because the preamps and processing are great on the SD7, that's really all I need to do, which suits me, as less is more is always my preferred approach.”

Fletcher Sports shoots continuous Ultra-Motion 4K for Baseball and NBA with I-MOVIX X10 UHD Chicago-based sports production specialists Fletcher Sports has completed the first season of major league baseball and NBA coverage using the I-MOVIX X10 technology and plan to use its new fleet of X10 UHD systems over the next season to come. Deploying the X10 technology, Fletcher Sports provided continuous recording in 300fps or 600fps to broadcasters Major League Baseball, and ESPN for the NBA coverage. The X10 system’s compact size allowed Fletcher crews to provide innovative angles from cameras located behind the basketball backboard. “With continuous recording in 1080p at up to 600fps, replays really look a lot better than anything you can get with the standard 60fps system, where there's a lot of motion blur,” said Dan Grainge, VP of Fletcher Sports Chicago. “You can tell if a player's over the line, whether he has possession of the ball and so on. Before using the X10 UHD, it was difficult to do that because you didn’t have all the frames to play with. But now you can slow down any action, reducing motion blur to zero.”

her resolution to provide zoomed ultra slow motion shots with an exceptional quality. While its broadcast customers particularly like zoom and the X10 UHD’s continuous recording capability as an enhancement for broadcasts in 1080p, Fletcher Sports is also scheduled to contribute to the pioneering 4K public broadcasts of major sporting events planned over the next few months. The X10 UHD is the industry’s first 4K ultra-slow motion system to support both continuous super slow motion (SSM) and ultra slow motion (USM) at frame rates of up to 1000fps. The X10 UHD now has an increased dynamic range, further boosting the versatility of the camera in widely differing lighting conditions. For very high-frame rate ultra-

slow motion in 4K sports coverage, the system operates in USM mode to deliver instant replays of up to 1,000fps. For continuous non-stop recording, SSM mode delivers up to 120fps at 4Kp60. When operating in HD resolutions (1080p or 1080i) X10 UHD offers up to 600fps in continuous SSM mode, and up to 2,000fps in USM mode. The system can also complement these specialized applications by performing in a conventional live camera role. X10 UHD delivers all the usability and image quality benefits for which I-MOVIX systems have become renowned. Fully integrated for live broadcast production and easy to operate by any broadcast camera crew, X10 UHD will be specified in an RF version.

SAPEC and VideoFlow partner for delivering high quality video over unmanaged networks

SAPEC will be launching its latest range of high-end encoders and decoders at IBC 2014 on booth F90 in Hall 1. The Altum II are designed for high quality video delivery and have VideoFlow's Digital Video Protection (DVP) built in to ensure the high quality, live video transmission over unmanaged networks such as public Internet. The key to DVP is that it is independent of the video compression technology being used making it easy to deploy with any encoders and decoders. Mrs. Ronit Kalujny, VideoFlow's CEO, said, "This partnership has great potential for both companies as SAPEC has over 40 years of experience in developing and delivering state-of-the-art video solutions for tier one broadcasters, telcos and end customers including Telefonica, EBU, Televisa, and RTVE. We are delighted to have SAPEC as one of our partners as we build a complete eco system for delivering high quality video over unmanaged networks." Mr. Miguel Cristobal, CEO of SAPEC, explained, "Integrating the VideoFlow DVP technology into our products offers our customers the best video quality possible even over unmanaged networks like the Internet. We evaluated the technology options on the market for that and decided to trial VideoFlow's. Our engineers were very impressed with it as, over a period of a month, every lost packet was recovered and this was over a standard 6Mbps ADSL connection with no Quality of Service (QoS) in place. We will be adding the VideoFlow technology to our new H.265/HEVC encoders and decoders because, being a more

TMBi - 24

efficient encoding technology, H.265 is more vulnerable to unmanaged network interferences losing packets that would cause a sharp drop in the video quality unless protected by DVP." Reducing operating costs is a major driving force. VideoFlow technology enables customers to transport real time, high quality video over unmanaged, best effort networks that frees customers from the need and costs of having an expensive Service Level Agreement (SLA). In addition, VideoFlow's capability of dynamically adapting for optimal video quality is becoming an asset for building a cost effective, professional, live video contribution and distribution flow.

VideoFlow technology Live video broadcast are sent as a continuous bit stream, which the Internet was never designed to handle, resulting in artefacts caused by jitter, and packet loss. More than a couple of seconds of latency is unacceptable by customers expecting to enjoy the excitement of live events like sport as they happen. VideoFlow's patent pending technology opens the Internet for delivering content by ensuring that no packet

is lost and nullifying the jitter caused by transiting the Internet. By doing so, it affords broadcasters, teleports and operators the opportunity to use a highly advanced, low cost solution for live, high quality video streams in place of existing, expensive solutions. The DVP comes as a "Plug and Play" pair - a Protector, which stores the packets until it is certain that they have been correctly received, and a Sentinel which monitors the health of the video stream by watching for packet loss and requests packets to be resent from the Protector's cache only if required. This is ensured by VideoFlow's patents, which cover techniques to minimize the number of packets that have to be resent. VideoFlow's solution is highly flexible working with internet connections as slow as 200Kb/s or as fast as 800Mbps yet delivering the desired high quality. VideoFlow's patents also covers techniques to reduce bandwidth overhead to the minimum possible and to keep any delays at less than the two seconds, which is the maximum tolerated for true live broadcasts. VideoFlow's DVP family of products enables the reduction of bandwidth requirements cutting operational costs compared to the current solutions.

NOA’s new Videoscanner solves long-term access Conundrum for archive owners To overcome the lack of a market-dominant lossless archive format with wide vendor support, NOA’s VideoScanner uses a combination of mathematically lossless formats based on royalty-free open source technology to create lossless encoded files in the native source pixelformats (8bit 4:2:0 – 10bit 4:4:4) Future access to these formats is assured indefinitely, and decoders are available today for every computer operating system. VideoScanner imports most MXF OP1a and AVI files in a wide range of codecs (AVC Intra50/100, VC-3 [DNxHD], XDCAM HD 422, IMX D-10, FFv1, FFvHuff, …) together with up to 32 audio channels to produce the normalized archive. The lossless base format guarantees that copies subsequently created in production formats will always be supplied at the highest quality, and never suffer from lossyto-lossy transcodings.

To streamline the ingest process and further future-proof the archives created, VideoScanner creates a shot-detected index of the content and extracts all relevant technical metadata including timecode and source format properties. When users need to store additional technical metadata information which is not supported by the AVI container format, the data is stored in an openly-accessible standard IT database. “For a long time, archive owners have been dealing with lossy codecs to archive their material, and there has also been the problem of how to keep video files in a way that guarantees they will be readable for more than just a decade or so,” said Christophe Kummer, CEO of NOA Audio Solutions. “VideoScanner finally solves the conundrum: now it’s possible to create TV archives in a future-proof open archive format with no compromise on video quality.”

DVEO launches 50 channel transcoding playout serve and streaming appliance DVEO is now shipping their multiple channel live streaming playout server with transcoding for video-on-demand applications. The IP Grooming Server™ 50ch 1TB streams multiple video and audio files from the on board one terabyte hard drive, with scheduled playlists. The IP Grooming Server is a media capture and playout server. It stores transport streams, then "grooms" them by transcoding the streams to H.264 and/or scaling the video to different resolutions. It also adds various "wrappers" such as HLS, RTMP, etc. The Linux® based system outputs up to 50 streams at

the same time, with different bit rates and wrappers for each stream. The input of the stored content typically arrives via FTP file transfer, and the files to be played are stored on the server. Input can be individual files or multiple files. Supported file types include H.264 ts, flv, H.264 ps, .mov, VC-1 (.wmv),

mkv, and others. The IP Grooming Server naturally supports loopable playback. "With the IP Grooming Server, you can create your own 50 'streaming' web channels with 50 different movies or content, playing on your preset schedule," commented Laszlo Zoltan, Vice President of DVEO. "It’s a great video hosting playout server for ISPs, corporate websites, schools, hotels, and digital signage." "We also offer a system without transcoding or scaling – the IP Server,” Laszlo Zoltan went on to say. "The IP Server includes scheduling and adds wrappers, making it a cost-efficient option."

GATESAIR

The IBC2014 show marks the first integrated demonstration by GatesAir of LTE Mobile Offload, a unique model for supplementing capacity for live TV and other popular video services for bandwidthconstrained mobile networks. The advanced model benefits both broadcast and mobile operators, maximizing the use of spectrum and cultivating new revenue models and business relationships; and reducing costs, expanding reach and preserving bandwidth. Broadcasters benefit from a new way to increase viewership and monetize spectrum given the rapidly growing number of consumer mobile devices in use worldwide. In addition to overcoming previous barriers to HD video delivery over mobile devices, LTE Mobile Offload allows broadcasters to reach a highly nomadic viewing audience with existing standards and technology. Mobile network operators benefit by offloading video content to High Tower High Power (HTHP) transmitters from GatesAir, ensuring a seamless user experience for consumers through optimal spectrum utilization. Importantly, the groundbreaking initiative is developing at a time when UHF spectrum is in high demand for wireless broadband use

TMBi - 40

worldwide. Once commercialized, broadcast network operators could leverage their existing spectrum to simultaneously deliver fixed and mobile services over-the-air. GatesAir is working with the Technical University of Braunschweig to commercialize the technology. “LTE Mobile Offload represents a breakthrough opportunity for sharing wireless spectrum, and we see it as a natural progression of UHF broadcasting,” said Rich Redmond, chief product officer, GatesAir. “Broadcasters, network operators and mobile service providers can reap a common benefit with this model. The advanced architecture of LTE Mobile Offload boils down to spectrum efficiency and the lowest cost means of delivering video content to larger audiences. The use of wireless spectrum no longer has to

be an either/or proposition. We are empowering our customers to take advantage of consumer trends and a quickly evolving market.” LTE Mobile Offload is proven to work using the DVB-T2 broadcast standard today. DVB-T2 includes Future Extension Frames (FEFs), which support the delivery of nonDVB-T2 signals inside the data stream. This opens a lane inside the DVB-T2 standard to deliver the signal type (LTE-A+) that 3GPP-capable mobile devices can receive and play outas video. Similar possibilities exist for incorporation into ATSC 3.0 and other digital TV standards. The GatesAir solution modulates the DVB-T2 and LTE-A+ signals, using a hybrid exciter platform and overthe-air transmitters to deliver simultaneous digital TV and LTE content to all devices from a broadcast tower.

Orad will unveil at IBC2014 its new 3Designer Adobe After Effects (AE) plugin. The unique 3Designer plugin lets graphics artists easily bring common AE design elements such as keyframed animations, textures and materials into the powerful Orad 3Designer authoring software. The new integration also allows users to assign data exports from within AE, ensuring templates created in AE receive data updates while on-air with real-time data. “Orad’s new integration elminates a critical gap in the graphics production workflow,” comments Avi Sharir, CEO and president, Orad. “Until now, After Effects designers would create motion graphics primarily for pre-visualization and post-production. For on-air broadcasts, these designs would have to be re-created in the authoring software. With the new 3Designer plugin, artists can export AE projects into 3Designer. There is no need to recreate elements, thus saving a tremendous amount of time.” Thanks to the 3Designer plugin, Adobe After Effects scene elements can be opened directly inside Orad’s 3Designer authoring software where additional edits can be made and sent to air.

Screen Stand 1.C49 Screen’s OTT/Web Subtitling Solution Now Supports LIVE Web Video Subtitling Global subtitling technology specialist Screen Systems has just announced that they will be offering a real-time demonstration of their live web video subtitling solution at IBC. Last year Screen announced the launch of the development of a method for served web video playback to ensure that subtitles are always displayed in the position and style intended on web and OTT content, whilst allowing viewers to select from several language streams without the need to reencode the video or host multiple copies of media. Roland will be exhibiting the recently launched XS Series of multi format AV matrix switchers at IBC, ideal for high quality, long distance transmission of audio and video content to displays. The XS Series supports eight HDMI, RGB/Component/S-video/Composite inputs and up to four HDMI or HDBaseT outputs with scalers to support picture-in-picture, resizing, rotating, and flipping. Audio can be embedded into outputs via 8 stereo audio inputs (2 mic) and/or HDMI audio as well as de-embedded on output. The XS-84 is capable of switching four video lines as a group, enabling configuration of a 4K system. Switching a mixture of video feeds that includes 4K, HD, and SD sizes as well as up to WUXGA and other computer video formats is also possible. The Roland AR-3000SD recorder/players offers advanced sound quality and network control features including programmable timers, improved network efficiency and support for multiple playback and control formats. Suitable for broadcast announcements, for use as part of larger installed sound systems which require recorded playback or for automated event productions, the AR Series of recorder/players from Roland are widely used in train stations, airports, shopping centres, amusement parks and museums around the world.

A challenging, yet much sought after solution to subtitling live web video however has just been developed by the company and will be demonstrated at IBC this September. One example is of a linear broadcast simulcast on the web. In a live web video the player cannot correctly report the current play position within the video, since this differs for each viewer depending on when they ‘switched on’. Additionally, each viewer may choose to pause or rewind live video stream (if this feature is provided). Screen has therefore developed a different synchronisation mechanism, while still using image based subtitles from a separate server. In Screen’s solution, some low bandwidth timing information is added to the video stream and used to synchronise subtitles to the frames of video the viewer is watching. The ‘script’ at the viewer’s device can obtain the current frame's time value from the video stream and use it to determine when subtitles, should be displayed from the subtitle server. An advantage of the Screen solution is that the same general mechanism of image based subtitles held on a separate server can be used for consistent broadcast quality subtitling of both Video on Demand and live web video. On 28 July we were invited to Pinewood Studios where Sony presented the new Alpha 7S. We went there to bring to our readers our first impressions. We also had time to see the new PXW-X70 ready for 4K.

TMBi - 63

NEW Α7S From starry night-time skies to atmospheric, candle-lit interiors: there’s now a camera that opens up great creative possibilities for capturing flawless, emotionally engaging movie footage and professional-quality still images. Joining the α7 and α7R, the α7S puts extraordinary sensitivity, low noise and 4K (QFHD: 3840×2160) image quality into the hands of serious photographers and videographers. Equally suitable for still photography and cost-conscious movie production, the α7S delivers dramatic artistic possibilities.

KEY SPECIFICATIONS

General Lens mount: α E-mount

Image sensor Type: 35mm full frame (35.6 x 23.8mm), Exmor CMOS sensor Number of pixels (effective): Approx. 12.2 megapixels

Recording system (still images) Recording format: JPEG (DCF Ver. 2.0, Exif Ver. 2.3, MPF baseline compliant), RAW (Sony ARW 2.3 format) RAW output: 14 bit

TMBi - 64

Key to the sensitivity of the α7S is a specially developed new full-frame 35mm Exmor CMOS image sensor. With a 12.2 effective megapixel count the size of each individual photoreceptive site is significantly boosted to increase their light-gathering power. Coupled with the camera’s powerful BIONZ X processing engine, this reduces image noise while increasing effective sensitivity range of the α7S to ISO 50 – ISO 409600 in expanded mode (ISO 200 – 409600 for movies).

This unrivalled sensitivity and ultra-low noise floor allows the α7S to capture images in low light conditions where a lengthy exposure would normally be needed. Thanks to the camera’s huge sensitivity, it’s possible to shoot crisp, low-noise stills and video using faster shutter speeds. Its immense dynamic range is also ideal for high-contrast scenes, effortlessly handling extreme highlights and rich, deep blacks in the same frame. The newly developed image sensor provides photographers/videographers with high dynamic range in all conditions from extremely low light to bright sunlight. Using data read-out from every single pixel of the 35mm full-frame sensor (24p and 25p), 4K images created by the α7S are detailed with outstandingly rich colours and life-like textures in every frame. Refined by the BIONZ X processor, the high-speed data stream allows the α7S to output video at 4K

ZEISS LOXIA 2/35 AND LOXIA 2/50 LENSES FOR S ONY A LPHA 7/7R/7S The ZEISS lenses Loxia 2/35 and Loxia 2/50 are the first members of a new family of manual focus lenses for the E-mount full frame. They are optimized for digital sensors and electronic viewfinders and feature a mechanical aperture setting and the mechanical deactivation of the click stop (de-click) for ambitious videography. “Ever since the Sony Alpha 7/7r/7s helped compact system cameras break through to the full frame, there has been a growing desire for a ‘digital manual focus‘ experience that combines the best of both worlds. The Loxia 2/35 and Loxia 2/50 are the first members of a new family of manual focus lenses for the E-mount full frame. By entering this field, ZEISS not only wants to meet this desire, but exceed it,” said Christophe Casenave, Product Manager at ZEISS Camera Lenses. Freedom of composition in photography was the guiding principle in developing the ZEISS Loxia 2/35 and ZEISS Loxia 2/50. An electronic interface transmits lens data (EXIF), but it also recognizes focus movements and, if desired, activates the camera’s magnifier function. This supports the possibilities of modern compact camera systems with an electronic viewfinder. Furthermore, the Loxia lenses allow for precise manual focusing as well as a mechanical setting of the aperture. Yet another highlight – the mechanical deactivation of aperture click stops (de-click), thus creating progressive and noiseless aperture settings– makes this new lens family a tool that provides a high degree of creative potential, not only for photographers but also for ambitious videographers. Thanks to their precise

TMBi - 72

manual focusing, the Loxia 2/35 and Loxia 2/50 are also suitable for professional video productions. Both Loxia lenses have a high speed of f/2, which expands the creative possibilities even more. Two examples are the effective isolation of motifs with a low depth of field or free-handed photography, even with poor lighting conditions. The Loxia lenses offer a high resolution across the entire image field and a harmonious bokeh in the background, especially at the maximal aperture opening of f/2. The Loxia family stands out for its superb mechanical quality. The smooth focus operation with a large focus rotation angle of approximately 180 degrees allows for the finest variations in focusing.

The filter diameter is a consistent M52 across the entire lens family. The robust barrel is made completely of metal so that it can withstand the rough everyday situations that professional photographers face and ensuring a long product life. In addition, the lenses have a special weather sealing at the lens mount to prevent spray water from getting between the camera and the lens. The Loxia 2/50 will be available worldwide starting October 2014 and the Loxia 2/35 from the end of the fourth quarter of 2014. The recommended retail price of the Loxia 2/35 will be EUR 965.55* (US$ 1,299.00)* and that of the Loxia 2/50 will be EUR 713.45* (US$ 949.00)*.

PXW-X70 Sony has also launched the 4K-ready PXW-X70, the first compact XDCAM professional camcorder ever produced. The PXW-X70 features a 1.0 type Exmor® R CMOS Sensor with a resolution of 20 megapixels. The sensor, which is even larger than the Super 16mm film frame, delivers high resolution and fantastic low light performance, as well as offering more depth of field control as demanded by today’s diverse shooting requirements. The new camcorder has the ability to record High Definition in XAVC Long GOP, enabling 422 10-bit sampling at 50 Mbit/s. This in-turn supports a broadcast-quality workflow, increasingly adopted by productions in many different professional applications. This addition to the expanding next generation XDCAM family follows the recently announced PXW-X180 and PXW-X160 and builds upon Sony’s successful heritage of compact professional camcorders. The PXW-X70 is the first professional compact camcorder from Sony to include Wi-Fi-enabled control via Smart Phone or Tablet using the Content Browser Mobile application. An upcoming release will also provide customers with the ability to upgrade the PXW-X70 to record in 4K Ultra High Definition, with file transferring, and live video streaming capabilities. “This first compact member of the XDCAM family brings the performance and workflow benefits associated with XAVC to an even wider range of shooting scenarios,” said Robbie Fleming, Product Marketing Manager, at Sony Professional Solutions Europe. “Over the past couple of years we’ve seen the broadcast industry really embrace the picture quality benefits associated with large sensors; the one-inch sensor at the heart of the PXW-X70 sets a new standard for colour, depth and texture in a professional compact camcorder. Coupled with the ability to upgrade to 4K, this represents a multipurpose, future-proof option for customers looking for a tough camcorder which doesn’t compromise on image.”

Music Mix Mobile (M3), an Emmy® and Grammy® Award-winning provider of mobile audio facilities for high-profile live entertainment events and broadcasts, has deployed Sonnet Technologies' Echo™ Express III-R and xMac™ mini Server Thunderbolt™-to-PCIe® 2.0 expansion systems in its mobile production units and portable flight pack systems. Joining a broad array of Sonnet expansion and storage solutions in use since M3's founding in 2008, the Echo Express IIIR and xMac mini Server chassis offer highly reliable and scalable, yet cost-effective, means of extending and streamlining M3's on-location audio recording workflows.

TMBi - 77

In recent months, M3 has migrated some of its operations from legacy Mac Pro® towers to more portable MacBook Pro® notebooks and Mac® mini computers. In the process, M3 needed solutions that would enable its engineers to continue working with the high-performance PCIe cards they had been accustomed to using in the extensible but bulky Mac Pros. The Echo Express III-R enables the MacBook Pros — or any Mac computer equipped with Thunderbolt 2 or Thunderbolt ports — to interface with a wide variety of high-performance PCIe cards originally designed only for use in desktop computers. In similar fashion, the xMac mini Server increases the functionality of the powerful yet ultra-small-footprint Mac mini by securely rack-mounting the computer and connecting it via Thunderbolt to two PCIe 2.0 expansion slots contained in the same enclosure.

TMBi - 78

"As smaller and more portable Mac computers have become more powerful, we've realized we can use them for many tasks that previously required the horsepower of the legacy Mac Pro," said Joel Singer, co-founder and technical engineer at M3. "With the Sonnet expansion systems, we're able to leverage the portability and costeffectiveness of the MacBook Pro and Mac mini without having to change our workflows and audio processes that rely on PCIe cards from Avid, RME, Aja, Blackmagic Design, and other vendors. We just pop the cards into the Echo Express, connect the chassis to the MacBook Pro via Thunderbolt, and we're ready to work. With the Mac mini, it's even easier because the computer is already mounted inside the xMac mini Server chassis with Thunderbolt connectivity." M3 was among the first Sonnet cus-

tomers to use the Echo Express Thunderbolt expansion system and the first to apply it for audio recording, beginning with the earlier Echo Express Pro two-slot model. Today, M3 has installed Echo Express III-R and xMac mini Servers in all four of its mobile production vehicles as well as a dozen of its portable mixing/recording systems. In addition, M3 uses several Echo Express Pros as well as Sonnet's Tempo™ SSD 6 Gb/sec SATA PCIe 2.5-inch storage cards and Allegro™ USB 3.0 host controller cards. "In our business, we travel all over the world for mobile event recording — so the solutions we use must be absolutely robust, reliable, and easy to carry," Singer added. "In addition to these qualities, the Sonnet expansion chassis are brilliantly designed and extremely easy to work with. Our techs can come off of a flight with a couple of carry-on bags, arrive at the location, and then put together an extremely relia-

ble and great-sounding recording system in a matter of minutes. In many ways, the Echo Express solutions have ushered in a new era of mobile recording for our company." "As the largest remote audio facilities company in the U.S., M3 is a highly valued customer and one of the best examples of how our advanced Thunderbolt expansion systems can be used in an audio recording setting," said Greg LaPorte, vice president of sales and marketing, Sonnet Technologies. "M3's Emmyand Grammy-Award-winning staff has used Sonnet equipment for years to record and produce some of the world's most prestigious broadcast shows and most well-known musical acts. We look forward to our continuing partnership as the company deploys some of our upcoming solutions, such as the xMac Pro Server, a rack-mount enclosure, and the Thunderbolt-to-PCIe 2.0 expansion system for the new Mac Pro."
