Wife, mother business woman and a career that keeps on giving. How have you kept the momentum going, where others have failed? I stay positive and motivated. Even a bad situation has a reason to bring some good. If I do loose my temper (it takes a lot) I usually regret it and never hold a grudge. Steve (my husband) sometimes has to ask me to “Cheer down” when I’m singing first thing in the morning. There is no glass half full or half empty – it’s overflowing. What do you love about your life? Right now, it is touring with the group, formerly Bucks Fizz. In general it has to be the diversity of my life, the travel, the gigs, raising a family. There is no room for boredom. Every morning I look forward to seeing what is in my diary for the day.

You came from very humble beginnings, how have you kept your children grounded? My daughters are very grounded, although they have had a very different life and I have always tried to give them a better life than I had growing up. I grew up with my mother paying the meter with her last shillings and us wearing second hand clothes; which is probably why I will only wear new clothes now. I remember my daughter Kyla coming home from a friend and saying her friend’s house is so small. I realised then that they hadn’t experienced any different because we were living in a larger house at the time. It was good for her to see that not everyone was as privileged as she was.

What do you do to take a break during the day and recharge? Mmm, 40 winks or 30minute power breaks. I use them to scroll through my iPhone and social media. How did you go from a desk job to performing? It was 10 days of boredom behind a desk while my boss, Josh went on a trip to Israel. I was reading Melody Maker and NME magazines and saw a job offer. Went to the audition. They called me to ask if I could come back and do harmony for a vocal group. I had no professional experience and was quaking in my boots. I rang my mum and sister, who said “Just try it.” I sang the harmony (which was easy) but I was nervous. The next day I was back at work and never thought anything would come from it. The call back came, they wanted me to start the following week. Josh came back from Israel and I knew I would have to resign. When I told him about it he said I must go. If you could go back, would you change anything? Can’t go back and I wouldn’t change a thing. If my mum and sister didn’t say “Just try it, Rita.” Or Josh didn’t say “Go.” It might all have been different. You’ve done TV presenting, Opera Singing, theatre, being a chef. What is keeping you busy these days?
What do you wish you had more of ? Time. There is never enough. They say “If you want something done, ask a busy person to do it” I am disappointed if my list isn’t complete.
We’ve been touring with Formerly Bucks Fizz’s Paradise Regained Tour. I’m playing Glinda in The Wizard of Oz - A Christmas Pantomime at the Shaw Theatre in London 12-30th December and then next year I will be doing some shows on the P&O Cruise Ship Britannia. Up close & personal I’m sure it isn’t all showbiz. Is there a side to you that the public does not get to see? Do you ever feel like there are two of you? There are two of me. Rita, the wife and mum from West Peckham. Happy to spend time with friends at the pub catching up, or on holiday with my twin daughters on holiday. We’re celebrating their 21st’s in Cape Town. Then there is Cheryl Baker, the performer and her wardrobe of sparkly clothes. Would you recommend working with your husband? Not recommended (Laughs) children, animals and add husband. What are you reading right now? I used to be a bookworm now it is limited to reading when on holiday. My latest read was the Dawn French novel. I will be travelling on the cruise ships in January, February and March, so am open to recommendations. City break or beach holiday? Both – City breaks with friends and the beach holiday with the family. Although, always the pool and no sand.
Champagne or wine? Champagne Dining out or cooking? Dining out, but a keen cook. I support Abigail’s Footsteps, a charity for stillborns and have been up for auction to cook in family’s homes. I love that.

We are dedicated to getting you fit through boxing exercises (non contact). Your energy levels will go through the roof training in our authentic spit and sawdust gym. We do early sessions every morning at 9:30am so when you drop the kids at school you can have a bit of ‘me’ time and train with two qualified A.B.A (Amateur Boxing Association) coaches. Christmas is a time of fun, families and food! Prepare yourself for the indulgent season ahead
I
t is not a time to worry about weight gain as we juggle everything that we need to do in order to prepare for the party season and beyond. New Year is typically a time that we look to fresh starts and addressing our health. But unless we take a few steps before the Christmas madness starts, we can often begin the New Year unprepared. As a Personal Trainer and Nutritional Therapist (as well as a busy pregnant mum to an energetic toddler!) I understand how difficult it is to focus on your diet and fitness at this time of year. But by putting a few simple plans in place we can prevent piling on the pounds this Christmas, avoid the stress and kick start the New Year feeling healthier than ever: Pass the chocolates…quickly! Instead of filling up on crisps & chocolates, why not try a handful of nuts (no, not the dry-roasted or salted ones!) or some fruit? Nuts contain essential oils, which are antiinflammatory, good for brain health, skin and hair. And they will help you to feel fuller for longer, which salty sugary food will not. Try not to over-eat, as they are still a fat, and keep in the fridge to prevent them turning rancid. Also include seasonal fruit & vegetables into your Christmas diet, far better for you than a cheese straw! By the time the New Year arrives, you will already be reaching for the healthy snacks instead of the less healthy options.
Time for a tipple? Or two? Almost impossible to avoid at the many parties and gatherings you will attend. If you cannot get through Christmas without a drink or too, opt for spirits, such as gin or vodka with soda or tonic instead of calorie laden creamy cocktails, beer & wine. Try to limit your drinking time to evenings or just with meals. The earlier you start, the more calories you will consume, and you are also more likely to overeat when drunk. And, as mentioned earlier, keep hydrated! Water water everywhere… But sadly we often forget to drink enough, Aim to drink 4 - 6 glasses of water daily, this will not only keep hunger pangs at bay, it will also help the body to cope with the increased level of alcohol that many of us consume during this time.

Exercise? But it’s cold outside… It can be all too tempting to spend Christmas snuggled up in front of the fire, watching endless films and tucking into chocolate. Christmas is a time to relax, but that doesn’t mean you need to neglect your usual exercise regime, as it can lead to feeling sluggish and demotivated by the New Year. Wrap up warm and go for walks or bike rides with your friends and family. You will feel far more energised just by getting 30 - 60 minutes daily exercise into your Christmas routine and hit January 1st feeling energized. As you’re winding down for year end or planning for 2016, follow these tips to avoid overwhelm.
Can you see your desk?
As the boss, what are your objectives and what could you do ‘less of ’ to free up your time? Most clients are fighting the fire and working in their business, rather than on their business. In today’s techy world let’s get rid of unnecessary meetings for the sake of having a meeting! A quick FaceTime or Skype call can simply eliminate all of your travelling around and give you space to breathe between slots, all you need is a quiet room or space for privacy. I wouldn’t advise doing this on public transport as you never know who’s listening. Is your inbox overwhelming? I am the Queen of deleting, if it has no future or needs no further action then hit delete. I set up sub folders for projects, personal stuff, to do stuff etc. Once there’s some structure to your inbox, you can start flagging and highlighting. I like to colour code certain email addresses so that I can group them together, but I have multiple calendars open at one time. I also think things like invitations should be copied into a calendar with the attachment and then deleted.
There is a lot to be said for the clear desk clear mind saying. I’m often asked to help de clutter offices and homes, which probably is my most favourite part - give me a stationary catalogue and I’m in heaven. If you can associate with working in chaos then imagine if you knew where everything was? You could pull a file out, search for an invoice and it would just appear. A lot of clients working from home have no system. It may have been a role they fell into having once worked in an office. Systems are easy to set up it is just knowing where to start. Do you need to delegate? Get a VA. Entrepreneurs & private individuals often require a Virtual Personal Assistant to run their business and lives. The goal for your VA is to give you back your life. Understanding your clients objectives is the most important goal for every VA and relationship building is paramount to providing a seamless service.

A special day at The Judd School The Skinners’ Company founded “Sir Andrew Judd’s Commercial School” in 1888 in East Street, Tonbridge, from funds provided by the Sir Andrew Judde Foundation. The school moved to its present site in Brook Street, Tonbridge in 1896 and changed its name to “The Judd School” in 1925, later becoming the first Voluntary-Aided Grammar School in the country. The spiritual home of all Juddians is the School Room, which is an inspiring Victorian hall used for assemblies, concerts and theatrical performances. In recent times, as the school has grown,new buildings have been added to the site to accommodate demands for more spacious and dedicated facilities and the school is about to embark on its latest project to build a new dining room and suite of biology labs as well as new sports fields further along Brook Street. Apart from the high-ranking academic achievements of the students, the school has long since had a tradition of sporting prowess and so was recently delighted to welcome the Argentinian international and Saracens player Juan Figallo and Academy coach Rory Teague to provide a day of rugby training for the students. A woman in a man’s world Sanlam Private Wealth’s Head of HR, Alison Barwell, talks to Darling about rugby, career development and the challenges of being a woman in a man’s world.
W
hat is your role, within Sanlam, and how has it changed since you were first appointed?
I started as a HR manager with Principal Investment Management in Sevenoaks in 2004 and worked part-time. I was promoted to Head of HR in 2008 (at the same time I found out I was expecting twins!) I took seven months maternity leave and returned in September 2009 and I now work 4½ days, mainly from our office in London.
How did the Saracens Rugby Club and Judd School event in September happen and why? I am closely involved with our partnership with Saracens – notably the Player Development Programme. The Head of our Sevenoaks office asked me to coordinate an event with a local school and I am friends with parents at the school who kindly introduced me to the Headmaster at Judd. Saracens were delighted to help and sent a coach and 1st team player. It was a fantastic event.
Why is it so important for Sanlam Private Wealth to engage with the local community? We take corporate responsibility very seriously and getting involved with local communities is just one of the ways we give something back. Working with local schools and charities is obviously good for our brand, but more importantly it’s good for our people – lots of our staff enjoy and appreciate Sanlam’s local, community involvement. Our Saracens partnership has been a particular success and is a great example of how one of our key national initiatives can be brought to bear locally.
How are women encouraged to succeed within Sanlam? In 2014 I set up a Women’s Network for our UK colleagues. Women from across the business have joined the Forum and we meet every quarter to discuss a wide range of issues from flexible working to personal ‘brand’ and behavioural finance. We invite high profile women speakers and encourage our colleagues to support and promote all the opportunities available to women. I also offer one-to-one mentoring and career development to all staff.

What opportunities are there for staff to visit South Africa? There is an opportunity each year for two UK members of staff to attend the South African Annual Conference. Two places are awarded to the individuals who achieve the highest scores for ‘Living the Values’ and have made significant contributions to the ongoing success of the firm. We also run an annual six week Global Exchange Programme. Two UK colleagues are selected to travel to South Africa and two South African colleagues come to the UK.
How do you balance your work and home life? I have to be very organised and manage my time very efficiently! Technology helps – I have an iPad and do lots of work while travelling to and from work. We have a great nanny and my husband helps with early mornings and evenings when I can’t be at home. It is a challenge and a real juggling act – sometimes things fall down but generally if you are prepared to compromise, make sacrifices and work in the evenings you can make it work! A priority for me is to read bedtime stories to my twins, cook an evening meal and support my daughter at university. I also make sure I attend the childrens’ school and sports events – even if that means working until midnight to catch up!
What do your children want to be when they grow up? Our daughter is studying neuroscience at university and may do postgraduate medicine after that. My husband’s family are medical so it’s in her genes. The boys are six so too young to care – but if you were to ask them now one would say “a pilot or rock star” the other would say “army or a rugby/ football/cricket player”! They are quite different and I can’t wait to see how they grow up.
At the end of your career what would you like to be remembered for? I’d like to be remembered for always trying my best. For combining a demanding City career with bringing up three children and remaining professional while having fun along the way! And also for grasping every opportunity available to women in the 21st Century. One of my ancestors was one of the only female headmistresses in the 1920s – just after women won the right to vote. And my grandmother travelled the world with the Queen Alexandra Nursing Corps and drove a crane during World War I. She was a single parent with very few privileges. There must be something in my genes that is driving me on!
How do you feel you have personally changed Sanlam in the UK? The last three years have seen a lot of change in the UK wealth management market and this has challenged the business. I have encouraged greater communication and challenged managers to see people as our best asset and competitive advantage. I have introduced lots of new initiatives to promote more focus on training and development, and working more effectively in teams. I set up a HR Forum three years ago and we meet each month to address any staff issues and concerns. I also urge colleagues to take time to engage with their staff – every day. We have recruited some excellent people into the UK businesses and I am very proud of the calibre and professionalism of our team.

The Sevenoaks Business Awards 2015 The Sevenoaks Business Awards 2015 was hosted at Knole Academy on Friday 11 September. Secretary of State for Defence, The Rt. Hon Michael Fallon and the Mayor of Sevenoaks were among the 120 guests who attended the awards ceremony, which celebrated the achievements of a variety of local businesses and individuals.

Sevenoaks turned pink with the opening of Pink Week celebrated at The Vine in Sevenoaks. Great support from businesses and the Sevenoaks Town Partnership ensured a successful start to the week in aid of raising funds for Breast Cancer Care Charity. Organiser and fundraiser Steph Harrison lead the way in coordinating the day. Vital support services, such as the charity’s Helpline, online forum, information points in hospitals and face to face services for anyone facing Breast Cancer, as well as their friends and families benefit from the funds raised. The Pink Week raised over £13,000. Well Done!

With Pink Week nearly wrapped up for
another year, it is time for me to move on to my next challenge as a volunteer with Breast Cancer Care. As a volunteer fundraiser I usually devise and organise my own events but my role for this next event will be a slightly different one. I guess it is more of a PR role, and I have to say I am really looking forward to it. Earlier this year I was contacted by Eliza Ecclestone from the beautiful St Clere Estate in Heverham, just a stones throw from Sevenoaks, about an exciting new project happening there in March 2016 called Task Force Live. This is an authentically military designed obstacle race that will test brains as well as brawn. Having worked with Eliza before on other events I was excited about returning to St Clere and working with Eliza and the Task Force Live team, as I know this will be another great experience in my fundraising career. I am proud that I have been able to bring Breast Cancer Care to this exciting new event and cannot wait to see this new partnership flourish.
The other role I will be concentrating on is that of Inspirational Speaker. Spreading the word about the work we do at Breast Cancer Care is something I feel passionately about. This allows me to go into businesses, clubs and organisations to talk to the people there about our organisation, and the services we offer to anyone affected by breast cancer. Our charity was started just over 40 years ago by a wonderful woman called Betty Westgate, who after her own diagnosis realised the urgent need for support, care and information, which is something that is sadly needed even more today, so it’s an honour to carry on her work. Editor Tam Jackson, finds out about the hearty pub, the people, the food and more. Set in the heart of the village of Leigh, is the Fleur De Lis pub. Joanne and John, together with their two sons James and Jack and Cocker Spaniel, Teasel are no strangers to village life but have brought a new sense of community to Leigh village, set within the Sevenoaks District. It is warm-welcoming and friendly.
Club (www.walkingclub.org.uk) after enjoying the surroundings, like Chiddingstone Castle, Hever Castle and Penshurst Place. Although, not a sports bar, it was the hub of the World Cup Rugby and regularly screens main sporting events. Curry Night happens every 2nd Monday of the Month and regular Quiz Nights on Tuesdays. These are extremely popular, often Joanne and John have to rearrange furniture and add additional seating to accommodate more of their guests – I would suggest calling to book a table on these nights. There doesn’t seem to be any limit to their offering here, from opening early for a Christening celebration on a Sunday, to a Hog Roast or birthday party (complete with bunting and balloons).
The revamp to the pub has given it an air of yourhome-away-from-home. The décor brings a sense of Annie Sloan –esque, modern country charm – a far side better than the red carpets and darkness before.
Joanne is driven and committed and together her and John have really made an impact here, in only a few short months. Along with the joint efforts of customer facing and serving, Joanne manages the bookkeeping, ordering and cash control too. Her days are busy but varied and no two are the same.
The aim is for this to be THE meeting place of Leigh, everyone from the single mum, couples, the families, the grandparents, the sportsmen and women and the retirees meet. It’s a place for the local school mums, to meet in the morning to chat over coffee, croissants and bacon sandwiches. Opening early for them every fortnight. It’s supported by local sports teams, who quench their thirsts after a game or celebrate their comraderie over a meal. It’s a meeting place for the WI and local society groups – who Joanne often hosts charity events with. It’s a recommended lunchtime stop by the Walking
And did I mention the food… whether you’re too tired to cook or rallying the family round for a Sunday roast dinner, the kitchen produces good home cooked food. The specials board always has something to entice your taste buds – the latest favourite, the cheese board – baked Camembert and warm bread – delicious! There is something for everyone – AND it’s very child friendly (furry children included, there are dog treats behind the bar) With a warm welcome, exemplary and attentive service, it’s a must. The champagne is chilling and the 4Jays (that’s Joanne, John, James. Jack) brew is on tap waiting.

Single at Christmas A
t Christmas little children sing and merry bells jingle, The cold winter air makes our hands and faces tingle And happy families go to church and cheerily they mingle And the whole business is unbelievably dreadful, if you’re single. - Wendy Cope Now first and foremost, I want to come out and say that I love Christmas. I love everything about it: decorating my house, seeing other people’s decorations, seeing kids dressed in their Christmas costumes, seeing adults dressed up for parties, all the good TV, not feeling guilty about eating too much chocolate or party food. I even enjoy the stress of Christmas shopping – deciding what to buy people, worrying about how much I’ve spent, wrapping parcels, writing cards – you name it. However, I am single. And I mean totally single. I’m not married, don’t have a partner, my parents both died some years ago, and I have no brothers and sisters or any family whatsoever.
festivities, and I have a lovely time. The difficulty is, how do I tell them that I’d rather stay at home? When I was young, Christmas was spent indoors watching the telly and, quite frankly, I don’t think you can beat that. Instead, my Christmas Day now involves my getting up before 6am (which seems a little extreme given that I don’t have kids) and having to wash and dress myself, so that I can drive 75 miles in order to have breakfast with one set of friends and their young children, and then drive a further 52 miles to have lunch and spend the rest of the day with more friends and their family.
Therefore, I definitely fall into the category whereby I am “a problem to my friends” as there is an unwritten rule that I simply cannot spend Christmas alone. Don’t get me wrong, I love my friends dearly and they are hugely kind and generous to me and welcome me (and my dog) into their homes for all their 42 nov-dec-jan 2015/6 | darlingmagazine.co.uk
I never understand why it is so important that I am not at home on Christmas Day.
I was home alone last Sunday and I coped just fine and, to be honest, the television wasn’t nearly as good that day. I would much rather get up late, possibly stay in my pyjamas, eat and drink whatever I want, whenever I want and, most of all, watch the television. Christmas is the one day when there is some pretty decent stuff on and I never get to see it. I long for the opportunity to watch the extra-long edition of EastEnders and the Strictly Come Dancing, Doctor Who and Downton Abbey specials, but, sadly, this is not allowed and, therefore, I have to go out and be sociable. So, to everyone who is spending Christmas at home this year – I hope that you have a wonderful time and spare a thought for single people like me, who have lovely friends that they should be more grateful for. your (problem) friend, Carrie x
