INSPIRING WOMAN

Mary Queen of Shops

Find out how one woman is making a world of difference by Abbey Bamford

M

ary Portas is perhaps best known as the straight-talking retail consultant who made British high street businesses take stock and shape up in her TV series Mary Queen of Shops, What Britain Bought and Mary Portas: Secret Shopper. She is a self-made woman whose career in retail started by chance at John Lewis when she had to start work to support herself and her younger brother. In her early life, Mary made many sacrifices and even turned down a place at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, but it was not in vain. John Lewis was a springboard to Harrods and later Topshop where she made her mark as a much admired and sought-after display manager. Her big break came when she got the coveted role as the creative director at Harvey Nichols. As a mother of three children, she knows what sacrifices women must make to have a career they want and deserve. This is brilliantly put

in her book Work Like a Woman: A Manifesto for Change. Mary is a woman with vision and the determination to bring it to life. She was chosen to lead David Cameron’s Government’s review into the future of the British high streets. She has launched a successful chain of Save the Children charity shops called Mary’s Living & Giving Shops, runs a creative agency Portas and is also the brains behind the concept of the Kindness Economy.

Q. What is the Kindness Economy? A. “Effectively it means that we need to think and be generous and kind in the way that we approach business so that we create an economy that puts people and the planet before profit. “We come from a highly consumerist society where we don’t think about the impact read more at darlingmagazine.co.uk spring 22

INSPIRING WOMAN that industry has on our planet. There are two fundamental changes that need to happen. One: the business world needs to change how products are made. Two: we as people need to think about how and what we buy. “It’s still an economy because businesses need to make a profit to keep going, but it’s an economy with a heart and a conscience.”

Q. You are known as a retail guru of the British high streets. What’s your vision for their future? A.“We have an opportunity now to make our

high streets central to what I call the Kindness Economy. We’ve come to learn that what is in our local community is vital to our social structure and sense of wellbeing. That’s what I found when I did my high street report 10 years ago. “One of my visions is that everything is within cycling or walking distance of our needs. If we get that right I’ve got every hope that people will be feeding into the social progress of their community.”

Q. We’ve done phenomenally well in narrowing the gender career/pay gaps in recent decades but there is still a way to go. What is needed now to get women on par with men in economic terms and finally close that wealth gap? A. “Read my book, Work Like a Woman – it’s

all in there. I’ve written so intensely about it and it’s absolutely central to this debate. We need to put the feminine values as the caregivers of society back into business and we need men picking up these traits too. “In my book I write about the fashion industry (of which I’ve been a part) where 60% of the workforce within it are women, but only 10% sit on boards. Clearly we’ve got a huge way to go but the more we talk about the power in the way that women work – through understanding humanity and people – the greater the chance of these values being put back into business.”

Q. You are known as a woman with endless ideas, always tackling new projects, and you’ve recently published another book - Rebuild: How to thrive in the new Kindness Economy. Where do you find your inspiration and is there anything in the works at the moment?

A. “Central to my inspiration is my love for

understanding the cultural frequency and knowing what’s happening in the world. If you’re connected to that, things just happen. Ideas come to you. “I’m back to doing my podcast, ‘The Kindness Economy’. I’m also just becoming one of the Co-Chairs on something very important called the Better Business Act, which will start to change policy at government level. That is one of the most important things I’ll be doing this year. “A vital part of the act is Section 172 of the Companies Act. We want it changed to set minimum expectations for businesses, so they don’t just think about profit, but about purpose and their responsibility to their directors, their community and to society. That should be the role of business.” FOR MORE GO TO

P

hoenix Style is one of the UK’s original destinations for authentic pre-loved designer fashion. With a 46-year heritage, it has established itself as a community built for buying and selling luxury designer fashion, jewellery, shoes, and especially handbags. The Phoenix team of authenticity specialists will go to every length to

ensure that what they sell is the real deal so that you can shop with confidence. Follow @phoenixstyle_ on Instagram and tune into their #ShopOurDropThursday at 1pm on Instagram Live to get early access to new stock, especially if you are looking to invest in a luxury classic handbag, the investment pieces are known to sell out in minutes. n

isty & Claridge’s owner Kim Collins is devoted to style and sustainability. She has over 25 years of international and UK retail experience as a fashion buyer, designer, merchandiser and stylist, gaining her luxury expertise at Louis Vuitton, Versace and Dolce & Gabbana. More recently, her concern for the impact of the fashion industry on the environment motivated the launch of her preloved, designer boutique. “Luxury designer clothes are created with the best fabrics and beautiful tailoring and if looked after, 10

will last for years. This allows these classic designs to be bought and sold many times, giving each owner the chance to wear the very best at a snip of the original price, without impacting the environment” she explains. The shop interior is stunning, with shop fittings recycled from Harrods Chloé boutique. Alongside the pre-owned pieces, Kim has carefully curated new fashion from well-known designers to up-andcoming, independent labels. n Coming soon: a club night for women with expert talks on a multitude of subjects. Saving the planet one outfit at a time Everyone loves buying stylish clothes for half the price that the big brands sell them at, so why not halve your carbon footprint while you’re at it? Expert retail consultant Mary Portas chatted to Abbey Bamford about why buying second-hand is the sexiest fashion trend yet Many people think buying second-hand means compromising on quality. Mary’s Living & Giving for Save the Children stores, have a more upmarket image where all funds raised go to help change children’s futures in the UK and across the world. How can we break the stigma around buying pre-loved fashion? “It’s needs to come from people doing it and making it sexy constantly. If sustainable, modern business is talked about as being cool and sexy, it makes those dinosaurs that are just pumping out sh*t look like they’re not the cool brands to be with. It’s a big, big marketing job. “You need to be putting pressure on businesses, which I’m doing through the Better Business Act, ensuring that they are thinking about our planet and our people. No brand is totally sustainable yet, but we are on that journey.”

The natural enemy of pre-loved fashion is fast fashion. What are your views on fast fashion and how can we encourage people to move away from it? “This throw-away society is still being promoted through social media, where you’ve got this ‘buy now’ mentality being forced on you. This is the biggest ship we need to sink. We need

to keep shouting out about this and make it deeply unmodern. “It’s the younger generations that need to shift the dialogue. We need to be posting on social media about what this is doing to the planet. “People want to think they’re doing the right thing and not just in the earnest way but also in the right, cool, cultural way. I’m on this across as many platforms as possible, as is the fashion industry, but the truth is we need to make policy on this.”

What are you doing to kick-start the global discussion about eco-conscious fashion? “I’ll cover this on Mary Portas: On Style on Radio 4, which comes out in April. I’m also part of the World Hope Forum, run by Lidewij Edelkoort, where we work with fashion designers and innovators worldwide to look at how we can change the production of fashion. “Then I have my Mary’s Living & Giving for Save the Children shops which are all about recycling and upcycling”. “In everything I do I’m saying, ‘We can create a better, kinder society: who wants to join?’” read more at darlingmagazine.co.uk spring 22

CENTRE COURT.

The Ties of Sisterhood International Women’s Day is celebrated around the globe on the 8th March. Emma Green spoke to women’s groups in the area about how they mark this momentous day and why IWD is so important to them as women, and as a community

I

nternational Women’s Day (IWD) has been commemorated annually on the 8th of March for well over a century now, with the first IWD gathering taking place in 1911. IWD has become a day of celebrating the cultural, political, and socioeconomic achievements of women around the world, as well as being a focal point for highlighting issues such as gender inequality, reproductive rights, and violence against women. This year’s IWD campaign theme is #BreakTheBias, which focuses on empowering everyone to call out gender bias, discrimination, and stereotyping and to embrace a gender-equal world where difference is both valued and celebrated.

South London Women Artists The South London Women Artists (SLWA) is a critically acclaimed group of visual artists living and working in South London and has exhibited across the UK as well as internationally. This March sees them hosting an exhibition at The AMP Gallery in Southwark, aptly titled ‘I AM WOMAN, HEAR ME ROAR’ in celebration of International Women’s Day. Inspired by Helen Reddy’s 1971 hit song, ‘I am Woman’, the exhibition will form a tribute to the extraordinary creativity of women, past, present, and future, and of their remarkable strength, power, and resilience.

Curated by Alice Lenkiewicz, Jennifer Merrell, and Natalie Webb, thirty of SLWA’s talented members will be displaying their work in response to the question, ‘What drives us to make art, and what are the reasons we as women, choose visual media to project our views and opinions?’ With the artists’ choice of materials ranging from moving images and photography to painting and sculptures, the group hopes that the exhibition will prove to be a conversation starter in improving the visibility of women in the arts, as well as introducing their work to a wider audience. “International Women’s Day is very important to us”, says Lenkiewicz, Secretary and Acting Chair for SLWA. “As a group of read more at darlingmagazine.co.uk spring 22

artists, we feel it provides a voice for women on an international level, allowing us the opportunity to express ourselves as women while connecting with each other, discovering, and learning about women’s experiences today.” Previous years have seen the group showcase work at a number of galleries and events in celebration of IWD, including for ‘The Women of the World (WOW) Festival’ at the Royal Festival Hall in 2014. For further details on the group or their upcoming event, please see their website, South London Women Artists, or send an email to info@slwa.co.uk

The Korean Women’s International Network The Korean Women’s International Network (KOWIN) is a global association made up of women of Korean descent who are leaders in their respective sectors. They organise networking opportunities and discussions on issues concerning members within their local communities, as well as enabling women to find success in their chosen fields. KOWIN’s UK branch hosts seminars every March regarding women’s rights and equality. Many of the attendees are local to New Malden, which has been lovingly At a war memorial event in Gloucestershire

dubbed ‘London’s Little Korea’ due to its large Korean population and an estimated 20,000 residents living in the suburb and its surrounding area. The group’s last seminar took place in March 2019 where their guest speaker Yoon Jung Lee, an expert in Korean history, spoke about the Samil Independence Movement, which saw a series of protest demonstrations take place throughout the country for Korean National Independence from Japan. With 2019 marking the 100th anniversary since the movement began, the speaker also told the story of one young girl who played a leading role in the uprising, Kwansoon Ryu, and who would tragically lose her life to the cause. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the group has been unable to host any faceto-face seminars since then, but an online conference was held in March 2021 to discuss the contributions of some of history’s most influential women such as Emily Pankhurst, Melanie Wollstonecraft, and Virginia Woolf, along with Korea’s ‘first feminist’, Ms. Hyesuk Na. This year, KOWIN hope to run a cultural day with costume and food in celebration of International Women’s Day at New Malden’s HAN restaurant where they will be inviting other similar UK-based organisations with members originating from the Philippines, China, and India, to also take part in the festivities. For further details on the group or its upcoming event, please contact Jakki Park by email at jakkipark@hotmail.com

The ConveHERsation Network The ConveHERsation Network was established in 2017 by Priscilla Oshunremi to empower and amplify the voices of both women and non-binary people. Having attended other events designed specifically for women, Priscilla found these to be quite stuffy and so she decided to create a community that would enable more interaction and conversation between its members. country this summer. They currently have a new residency at The Stratford (Hotel in East London) where they will be hosting their first face-to-face event since the COVID-19 pandemic began on 5th March, just in time for International Women’s Day. Details are yet to be confirmed, but the event will involve a mixture of stalls, speed networking, and a panel discussing women who have defied the odds, as a nod to this year’s IWD theme, #BreakTheBias. Although the group hosts monthly events, Priscilla sees International Women’s Day as a powerful time of year to hold events on a much larger scale, and to create an even bigger impact within their community. “IWD is so important because sometimes the world forgets to acknowledge and celebrate the input women and non-binary people have to our societies,” she says. “We forget to discuss the disparities that exist in order to help us find ways to close these gaps.”

Women to Watch Inspiring stories by amazing women Anna Allington Oath Home

Lucy Jane Atkinson Theatre Director

Anna, founder of Oath Home, works with companies that face huge quantities of unused endof-project fabric. She provides an alternative solution to disposal or destruction from industries such as interior design, hotel refurbishment, film and network production, fabric manufacturing, and even retail. Anna and her team create handmade pieces with this fabric. Oath Home donates its profits to the charity Step-by-Step. We asked Anna why this charity was chosen? “Our first fabric donation was from a home refurbishment for foreign royalty. It made sense to use the offcuts from luxury houses to raise money for those who don’t even have a home”.

Think of me as a therapist for imaginary people. As a new writing director and dramaturg, I help writers and actors figure out how their characters think. At heart my job is to help writers express the purest version of their idea, then translate that truthfully and imaginatively to the stage. I am passionate about creating inclusive work. This year I have 3 projects which centre disabled characters and creatives, with the aim of making the theatrical experience accessible to all audiences. My work has won awards on both sides of the Atlantic, but I feel blessed to be from London, the world capital of new writing.

The Young Masters Ceramics Prize was created in 2014 and in 2017 saw the addition of the Young Masters Emerging Women Artist Award. Her most recent art project Focus on the Female aims to support women artists at a critical moment in art history.

Jane and Carol are two trailblazers hell-bent on championing the accomplishments and unlocking the potential of midlife women. Their inspirational manifesto Invisible to Invaluable celebrates midlife women’s skills and empowers readers to achieve their goals. Coming from the first generation of dedicated career-women, advertising guru Jane and screenwriter Carol faced professional erasure as they approached midlife. Not on their watch. Through their manifesto and Jane’s Uninvisibility project, they are increasing representation of midlife women in mainstream media and beyond. Together, they are rewriting the narrative for midlife women everywhere and showing the world how invaluable they truly are.

Making the most of waste Sustainable luxury home furnishings from Oath Home

O

ath Home was started after the founder, Anna Allington, was approached by a family member who was retiring after 30 years in the soft furnishing business. There was a storage space filled with part and full rolls of unused fabric that would have gone to landfill if no use could be found for it. Anna came up with the idea to make cushions and Christmas stockings from the luxurious, interior fabric and since the fabric was from the houses of foreign royalty, it made sense to donate some of the profits to those who don’t even have a home. The “Oath” in Oath home stands for Offcuts Assisting the Homeless. Word spread quite

quickly about the new startup and soon the company was receiving donations from network productions, costume departments, hotels after refurbishments, film sets, fabric designers, interior designers, curtain makers, and even a huge online retail company. This resulted in an expansion of the product range as the design team worked to ensure that as much fabric as possible could be used. The range now includes cushions, Christmas stockings, lavender pouches, farmers’ market tote bags, clothing (men’s, ladies’ and children’s), doorstops, throws, facemasks, napkins, table runners and children’s soft toys. n

FUNERAL PROMO

Pre-paid Funeral Plans - are they the answer? How a family chat prompted a re-think

T

hree years ago when we launched White Rose Modern Funerals, my parents, then in their early 80’s, informed my sister and I that the previous year they had purchased funeral plans as they did not want to leave us with any unnecessary burden at the time they died.

plan would not have covered the full cost of their preferred crematorium, and there would be no flexibility for my sister and I to deviate from the sombre, traditional coffin and transport ‘package’ that we would never have chosen for them. My parents upon realising this, cancelled the plans.

Plenty of family banter then ensued that they should have held on - they now had their own family funeral directors! What was interesting to us, armed with our insider knowledge, was the small print of my parents’ funeral plans, purchased from a provider that regularly advertises in the mainstream media.

Talking about death is a conversation that many of us don’t want to have. The chat with my parents would not have happened if it hadn’t been for us entering the industry. Having now organised funerals for 100’s of local families, if there is one comforting factor we observe, it is a family feeling a sense of control when they know their family member’s wishes.

We discovered that they were assigned to a funeral director they had not heard of, who was not even local to where they lived. Furthermore, the

Just to clarify, funeral plans vs funeral wishes. A funeral plan pre-pays set funeral costs

in advance. Be cautious that plans are often sold on the premise that funeral costs will continue to rise - this is misleading as the industry is changing. We can organise a dignified no-fuss attended funeral for less than £2k, which is far below the cited average of £4k +. To have a conversation about funeral wishes, the best place to start is to ask what a family member would not want. It’s a question worth finding out. For a chat about funeral plans or wishes, please call us, we’re here to help. n

Spring Selfie Ready? It takes more than weight loss to feel confident in a swimsuit

I

f spider veins, shaving rashes, skin tags, stretchmarks and stubborn fat pockets are knocking your confidence then this article might be for you. Dr Kim Prescott describes treatments to help get you selfie ready for summer.

Trim & tone Technologies such as Lipofirm and Emsculpt Neo combine muscle toning and fat reduction and are highly effective for anyone struggling to lose resistant weight around their middle or who wants to lift and tone their buttocks. During an Emsculpt Neo treatment radiofrequency warms the muscles in advance of supramaximal contractions, preparing them for an intense workout. In less than 4 minutes, the temperature in the subcutaneous fat layer can reach a level that leads to apoptosis, permanent damage to the fat cells that leads to them being removed from the body. Clinical studies show an average of 30% reduction in subcutaneous fat and up to 15% reduction in inflammatory visceral fat around the organs.. Radiofrequency also leads to skin tightening helping to manage skin laxity or stretch marks in the treatment area. High intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) 28

energy bypasses the brain’s limitations to contract muscles at an intensity not possible during a workout. A 30 minute Emsculpt Neo treatment on the stomach is the equivalent of doing 20,000 stomach crunches at 100% capacity (or 20,000 squats after a buttock treatment). This extreme stress forces the muscles to adapt, resulting in an increase in the number and growth of muscle fibres and cells. Clinical studies demonstrate an average of 25% increase in muscle volume 3 months after a course of 4 treatments.

Smooth & firm Cellulite programmes tend to include multiple modalities and homecare regimens. Technologies to manage cellulite are advancing rapidly and specially formulated products really do help to firm the skin, reduce the fluid

accumulation and improve the appearance of cellulite. LipoFirm PRO Cellulite Erase treatments combined with the BTL Emsculpt Neo fat reduction and/or buttock lifting protocols are used in the Penrose Clinic along with a home treatment regimen using clinically proven ingredients and techniques.

Removal of hair & veins Laser treatments have had a resurgence in popularity with the introduction of the new generation of medical lasers, and have an important role to play in your preparations for summer. The top of the range lasers have integrated cooling systems to ensure the treatment is comfortable even in the most sensitive of skins, and are adjustable to be suitable for all skin and hair types. Medical lasers that incorporate Mixed Technologies (both alexandrite and Nd Yag) are highly effective for the management of spider veins, cherry red spots, benign skin lesions and permanent hair reduction. Certain lasers can also be used to treat skin tags, but precision cryotherapy is another popular option. n

Time to hit the refresh button on your skin Have you noticed tech neck after spending time hunched over your laptop? Or the threat of Zoom doom skin? MicroNeedling might be the answer

A

quick and efficient SkinPen Precision appointment will awaken the fibroblast cells in your skin to stimulate and grow new collagen thus helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, skin imperfections and acne scarring. It re-plumps and gives a fresher more youthful appearance. The joy is that it is minimally invasive and quick. You can get straight back to work (in person or on screen!) and there will be little evidence of anything having been done.

Who is suitable for MicroNeedling? The SkinPen Precision treatment is safe for all skin tones and types. At Nakedhealth MediSpa one of the highly experienced aesthetic therapists will discuss your skin goals during a thorough consultation. Alternative or

complementary treatments such as HydraFacial, Microdermabrasion or light therapy will also be outlined and could enhance your results. High tech options such as PRP (Plasma Rich Platelets) or specialist serums could benefit you too. Your treatment plan will be customised so that you achieve the best outcome.

Is MicroNeedling safe?

What happens in the Skin Needling treatment?

How many sessions do I need?

SkinPen Precision is a mechanical device which creates thousands of microchannels or tiny injuries in the deep layers of the skin. This stimulates your body’s natural wound healing process, while minimising cellular damage. This rejuvenates your skin from the inside out. The overall skin structure is not affected but it is strengthened.

As few as three sessions, a month apart. Improvements are visible a month after the first session.

The magical effect of wound healing is stimulated by piercing the skin. This triggers the immune system to cause inflammation, increase blood flow, naturally cleanse and begin to create new tissue. The wound is rebuilt with fresh cells and a new network of blood vessels develops. Collagen and elastin production is at its peak and makes a big difference to the plumpness and quality of the skin.

SkinPen Precision is FDA cleared for safety and efficacy. Results have been clinically proven. With Plastic Surgeon David Gateley in charge at Nakedhealth the strictest hygiene procedures are in place; the clinic is CQC registered ensuring high safety and hygiene standards.

If you want to have great skin for a special event, then plan a few months in advance so you are prepped and glowing for the big occasion. If you just want better more glowing skin BOOK IN NOW! n

Non-surgical facial sculpting and anti-ageing treatments With Dr Nadine Skipp, expert in facial aesthetics

G

FILLERS

etting older is a fact of life, but there are treatments available to help you slow down the ageing process. Non-surgical facial aesthetic treatments are a non-invasive and effective way to improve how you look and feel without the need for surgery. The most popular wrinkle reduction treatments are botulinum toxin and dermal fillers. Both treatments are administered by injection therapy.

BOTOX Botulinum toxin acts by blocking the nerve impulses directed towards the muscles in which it is injected. These injections improve your

appearance by relaxing muscles that cause wrinkles. Botulinum toxin is also used to treat medical conditions such as migraines, bruxism (teeth grinding) and excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis). Procedure time is 20-30 minutes. Full effects take 10-14 days and lasts on average 3-4 months.

Dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural compound found in our body. There are a range of dermal filler products used to enhance facial features, plump up thin lips, soften facial creases and reduce folds, as well as plump up more broad areas with volume loss. Procedure time is 20-30 minutes with immediate visible results. Natural long-lasting results last from 6 -12 months. So, when your appearance no longer reflects how you feel inside, it’s time for change! Dr Nadine Skipp is an expert facial aesthetic practitioner and offers a wide range of nonsurgical treatments for your face, neck, hands and skin. n

Nutritional support for people with cancer If you have cancer, eating a healthy, balanced diet can Sofia help to improve your strength, energy levels and wellbeing. Sofia Bertolino, the Senior Clinical Dietitian at Cancer Centre London, explains how a dietitian service can benefit people living with cancer

How cancer can affect your diet

Reasons to see a dietitian

Cancer and the side effects of treatment can make it hard to get all the nutrients that your body needs. You may:

If you are living with cancer, there are many reasons to see a dietitian. They can:

• lose your appetite

• help you to understand the evidence and myths about diet and cancer

• be less able to eat certain foods

• support the treatment of specific cancers

• eat smaller portion sizes than before

• help you to manage the side effects of treatment, such as taste changes, nausea (feeling sick), diarrhoea, constipation, a sore mouth, difficulty in swallowing or a poor appetite

These issues can contribute to weight loss and low energy. Some cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy, steroids and hormone therapies, can cause weight gain. If you feel very tired during cancer treatment, you may also be less active than usual and gain weight as a result.

The dietitian service at Cancer Centre London Cancer Centre London has a specialised dietitian service for people with cancer. The dietitian can give you advice to strengthen and support your body before, during and after cancer treatment. A balanced diet can help to prevent inflammation, improve your body’s defences and reduce the risk of cancer returning when your treatment is finished. The dietitian can work directly with your doctor and make sure that treatment is adapted to your needs.

• recommend a specific meal plan after treatment to reduce the risk of further cancer, rebuild your strength and aid recovery • prescribe dietary supplements and give you advice about them • support you if you have lost weight as a result of your diagnosis or treatment • help you if you want to lose weight in a safe and sensible way after treatment The dietitian carries out a nutritional assessment. They then prepare a personal nutrition care plan, which suits your medical needs and is based on up-to-date evidence. n To book an appointment with the dietitian at Cancer Centre London, please telephone 020 8247 3379. read more at darlingmagazine.co.uk spring 22

Tuesday 15th March 7pm – 8pm

Let’s talk about menopause with Consultant Gynaecologist, Ms Diana Fleming.

My bladder is bugging me - Urinary Tract Infections in Women with Consultant Gynaecologist and Urogynaecologist, Miss Rhiannon Bray.

Sweats, flushes, brain fog, aches, pains, dry, itchy; all words used to describe some of the things women might feel as they transition through the menopause. How can a specialist help you to get through this time? What hormones are needed and why? How can they be taken? For how long and what are the benefits and possible risks? Ms Diana Fleming will answer questions on this normal but troublesome time in a woman’s life.

Urinary Incontinence: what can be done when you can’t hold it with Consultant Gynaecologist and Urogynaecologist, Professor Stergios Doumouchtsis. Urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse are common conditions and affect millions of women worldwide. Many women suffer in silence as they find it embarrassing to talk to a specialist. Prof Stergios Doumouchtsis will talk about conservative and surgical treatments that can dramatically improve women’s symptoms, quality of life and, most importantly, prevent from longterm consequences.

UTIs are a debilitating condition that can affect women of all ages. Recurrent infections can be especially challenging to treat. Miss Rhiannon Bray will discuss the common causes of Urinary Tract Infections, as well as novel theories and preventative measures and treatments.

Endometriosis, the invisible painful illness with Consultant Gynaecologist, Mr Zaid Hasafa. One out of ten women has endometriosis, while half of women with subfertility could have the disease. There are around 1.5 million women suffering from endometriosis in the UK. Despite the large number of patients and the painful symptoms, the average delay in achieving the diagnosis is eight years. Mr Zaid Hasafa will help you understand the disease and learn how to deal with it.

LEGAL PROMO

Introduction of no fault divorce Will this bring an end to A Very British Scandal?

M

any of us would have watched the recent “A Very British Scandal”, a historical mini-series following the notorious divorce of the Duke and Duchess of Argyll during the 1960s that was played out in public. Then fast forward to 2018 and the much-publicised case of Owens v Owens, which sparked headlines such as “Woman trapped in a loveless marriage” when the Supreme Court upheld the decision of the trial judge and

36

the Court of Appeal, and refused a divorce to Mrs Owens based on her allegations of unreasonable behaviour, which Mr Owens contested. The court agreed that Mr Owens’ alleged behaviour towards his wife did not amount to behaviour so unreasonable that a reasonable person could not be expected to live with him. Expressing regret at not being able to grant Mrs Owens a divorce, the court urged Parliament to act.

Any marriage breakdown is a highly emotive time in any couple’s life. Currently, couples have to prove one of the five grounds for divorce, which could result in parties playing the ‘blame game’ and increasing conflict before the divorce process has begun. This leads to excessive involvement from solicitors and inevitably higher expenses to be paid in the long run towards legal costs. Following the decision in Owens v Owens there was even more concern about ensuring examples of behaviour were carefully crafted even though the reasons set-out in any divorce petition rarely make a difference to any financial matters that need to be agreed. After years of campaigning for a change in the law, Parliament did act and on 25 June 2020 The Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act 2020 received Royal Assent. It was hoped that it would come into force in Autumn 2021, but due to issues with the court service IT systems and the delays caused by the pandemic it was pushed back to 6 April 2022. The Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act 2020 will herald the biggest reform of divorce law in 50 years. It will mean that couples will no longer have to make allegations about their partner’s behaviour to obtain a divorce. This change will also apply to civil partnership dissolution. No fault divorce will become a reality in England and Wales. Under the new law “irretrievable breakdown” will remain the sole reason for divorce but the need to give a reason will be removed. Couples will be able to make a joint application where they both agree the relationship has broken down or, alternatively, one person can apply. There will be a minimum of 20 weeks between issuing the petition and reaching the first stage of the divorce to give a period of reflection and the possibility of reconciliation or allow both parties time to agree practical arrangements surrounding the separation. Thereafter there will be an additional six week period before a final order is granted, severing the marriage or civil partnership.

The ability to defend the divorce will also be removed save for very specific circumstances. The language of divorce is also changing; ‘Decree Nisi’ will become a ‘Conditional Order’, ‘Decree Absolute’ will become a ‘Final Order’ and ‘petitioner’ (the person submitting the application) will become the ‘applicant’. These changes remove the legal jargon to make it more accessible for those wanting to achieve their divorce or dissolution without the assistance of lawyers in all areas of the process. This long-awaited reform to the law will enable couples and their lawyers to focus on positive uncoupling rather than allocating blame, especially when parting of ways is a mutual decision and there are children involved. Children undoubtedly cope better with a separation when their parents are not in conflict and can see a joined-up approach to their parenting. By removing the need to blame one party, it is intended that the new Act will help increase the likelihood of resolving divorce matters outside of court, providing a more efficient and collaborative approach between couples and solicitors, with less confrontation. A good divorce lawyer will listen to what is important to you and work with your spouse and their lawyer, as well as other professionals you may need to support you along the way. If you have any questions about the legal aspects raised above or would like help, please contact the Russell-Cooke family team. n

MENTAL HEALTH PROMO

Drop the ‘shoulds’ and change your negative thinking, says therapist Emma Parr

A

nother new year and with that the pressures of New Year’s resolutions, the idea perhaps of a ‘new you’; to be fitter, thinner, stronger – better. Social media carries this message as do those around us. The media talks about better mental health, but what if some of the ways we speak to ourselves and each other continue negative patterns we aren’t aware of. A pattern I see among mothers with children of the same age is a pressure they put on themselves and each other without realising it. Is the baby sleeping through the night? Are we back to our pre-pregnancy weight? We can feel despondent, less than and start to take on other’s expectations or views that are actually about themselves. A common term in our language is ‘should’ and when we receive comments like: “you should breast feed”, “you should try exercising”, it can feel like an order and it leaves no room for choice.

Substitutions help us think in a different way. If I recognise the word ‘should’ makes me feel without choice, what would it be like to say ‘could’? As soon as we use the word ‘could’, there is immediately a pause which allows us to make an active choice: “I could breast feed or use the bottle”. Using the word ‘could’ also connects us to our internal compassion, “I could exercise but today I am exhausted”, giving us permission to choose what is right for us. If you feel you would like support changing negative thought patterns, please do get in touch. n

Latest kitchen trends – BE BOLD Darling chats to Agnes Zmijewska, designer at Kitchen Revolutions

O

nly two years ago, my advice would have been to carefully balance colour, space, light, aesthetic, ergonomics and consider the style and period of your house. Today, my answer is very different.

a light filled room. For large but slightly darker rooms, choose a lighter colour door front, such as RotPunkt’s Daylight grey and accent it with a texture, in this instance, RotPunkt’s Tin Filled Oak finish.

We’re all reducing our carbon footprint. Some more religiously than others but one thing is fact – almost every extension or house renovation includes Bifold doors, glass corner ceiling to floor windows or skylights. We are instinctively inviting the outside in.

Something to be mindful of is that if you ever want to freshen up your kitchen space with another spark of colour, allow your kitchen accessories to do this for you. By this I mean that you should think very carefully before choosing a brightly coloured glass splashback you later regret. It is easier to change the colour of a t-towel, Nutribullet, light fittings, a few kitchens implements and your bar stools than it is to remove a green splashback.

Naturally, our living environment becomes lighter, so we gravitate to bolder and matt colours – various shades of greens, blues and autumn shades accentuated with textured wood. Gone is the gloss finish on anything, which is not eco-friendly either, so good riddance! Everything has become way more esoteric; if you love black – go black! That is a real trend right now, but don’t go there unless you have bifold doors, skylights or plenty of light as you may spiral into depression. Mix it up. Be bold. We are living in a bold era. If you have a large open space with natural light, you can use darker colours. This RotPunkt kitchen is a mixture of fingerprint resistant Fenix Green and a textured wood effect called Sherwood Black. Both are bold colours but make a beautiful statement in 42

With splashbacks – I recommend taking your worktop up the wall. Keep it simple. A few years down the line, you will thank me. Porcelain worktops (commonly referred to as Dekton, Neolith and X-Tone) are all the rage and again leaning towards a greener world. Porcelain is a great deal more versatile than Quartz. In summary, be bold – do the colours you love – bring the outside in and chose a manufacturer that has a dedicated “Green” ethos like RotPunkt. Reduce your carbon and stand proud. Bold is the new kitchen revolution. n kitchenrevolutions.co.uk 020 3302 6266

“As difficult as it has been there are a few tender memories: the genuine friendships with our neighbours, your staff have been super great and I believe they genuinely care - this isn’t just a business for them. We think we will leave next week, providing the Covid tests are negative … it’s like the most suspenseful storyline narrative ever, isn’t it! “Will they stay or will they go?””

How did you come to be staying in one of our properties?

The owner of Blair’s serviced and furnished home has been earning twice as much in rental, has the warm fuzzy feeling of providing a muchneeded home and has a hassle free, flexible investment. “We sold our house in June, on the very day we put it up for market! We were relocating as a family to the States and for that to happen, my husband needed a visa. Due to Covid his application was delayed. We found ourselves in a total pickle – we were advised to stay in an Airbnb and wait. We had no idea it would be for six months!”

How has the experience with BTLH been? “This has been a major life transition for us and being able to feel at home, welcomed by the neighbours and supported by the BTLH team has made it so much easier than staying in a hotel. You have shown us flexibility and genuine care, giving so much more than a roof over our heads: honestly, it has made all the difference! BRIDGE

Spring bridge with Darling guru, Paul Mendelson Old wives’ tales are generally misleading at the green baize. This week, a firm lady waved a piece of shortbread at her partner and quoted a famous bridge aphorism – and it would have made all the difference.

South’s leap to 4♠ was ambitious but reasonable, although 3NT would have made easily too. Hoping to combine a safe top-of-sequence lead with a doubleton, West led J♣. East ducked the first round and West continued. East won Q♣, cashed A♣ and then led K♣. Declarer trumped and West discarded. With six trump tricks, two hearts and A♦, South is one trick short. Thankfully, holding a doubleton diamond in dummy, declarer realised that she could trump her losing heart and this would provide her tenth trick. This must be undertaken before pulling trumps (so there are trumps left in dummy), and South led 2♥ to A♥, and 4♥ back to K♥ and then 10♥. West covered, declarer trumped with 5♠ and East overtrumped with 6♠. One down. Up until the moment, dummy was sipping tea and contemplating a shortbread finger. When the over-ruff appeared, she pronounced: “Partner! Never send a boy to do a man’s job?” Declarer defended herself: “but I only had boys!” The shortbread was pointed and eyes narrowed: “Then send the older one!” n aceoftrumps.com ♥♣♦♠ 44

THE LAST WORD

Le click, c’est chic! By Kate Greenhalgh

I

’m buying too much stuff online. Blame lockdown, but the habit seems to have stuck. I used to turn my nose up at ‘mail order’ - my granny was a fiend for buying thermal underwear from catalogues - but lockdown starved me badly of retail therapy, and I got click-baited. There are two mysteries about buying online: how, exactly, do you end up in that website-jungle in the first place, and why, if it isn’t quite right, do you always think ‘meh, never mind, too much hassle to return, work with it’? I decided to follow myself for a few weeks, being mindful of what was making me do it. What was the gateway? Print adverts? Word of mouth? Pop-ups? (Not TV. I look at my phone during TV ads, don’t you? And certainly not ‘influencers’ - I’m not allowed on any social media,

46

because my children say I would embarrass myself, by which they mean embarrass them.) I used to work in an advertising agency, back when we employed ladies in bikinis to promote unreliable cars by lying uncomfortably across their bonnets, so I consider myself to be a fairly sophisticated consumer. To start with print media. Apart from lovely magazines such as Darling, I am also a big fan of bus sides. I always seem to like whatever is advertised on bus sides. And outdoor billboards. I think if something is honest enough to be worth the trouble of getting big sheets of paper printed about it and put in place by people on ladders with glue brushes, then fair do’s - buy it. As for word of mouth - everybody I know has good taste, so again, fair do’s, buy it. This leaves pop-ups, as are irritating

the bejeezus out of me on my screen as I type. I just bought that blasted handbag - why are you blitzing me with pictures of it? And now a beautiful French woman in a jumper in Paris....oh wait on...hullo...she looks so cool...click, click, click. This is not to say shopping in actual shops is over of course. I’m not necessarily a ‘bellwether consumer’. I found myself in a real live shop changing-room only last week, having a nice chat through the curtain with a helpful person bringing me French jumpers to try on. And thank goodness I did. They looked awful on me. The homely British bosom does not sit well in Parisian knitwear - when will I learn? But online I might have bought them! And stuffed them in a drawer for some marvellous time in the future when I manage to look more French. n
