Has the virus stolen your spark? Relationships have weathered extraordinary stress in these past months, says therapist Pam Custers
I
t has simply been the perfect storm. Initially hunkering down, not facing the work commute and baking copious banana bread felt ok at first. After speaking to some clients, I know that they felt in some ways, work, school and home stress had subsided. Sadly this view changed as time went on. The intensity of being foisted together for prolonged periods whilst being deprived of the small every day interactions have taken their toll. So how do we get the spark back in our relationships? Many couples and individuals are finding that living and working together has been a case of too much togetherness. Intimacy is vital for relationships but being under the same roof does not equate to intimacy. We know that physical intimacy needs to be worked on. At the best of times after the first few years and doesn’t just happen “naturally”. One potent way to reignite the spark is emotional intimacy. Emotional connection takes effort. Being in the same room does not equate to emotional intimacy. It takes effort to feel close to each other by being present, emotionally available and connected in our relationships. Giving your partner your attention, being curious, allowing your partner into your head and being vulnerable.
