DEAR READER You are holding a treasure in your hands: three new developed danceworks for the very young ones – ready to tour! GREAT art for small children is a 3-year project initiated by Dansens Hus Oslo to encourage the development of dance performances for the very young ones. The first three performances were created in 2016 – 2019. The performances in this brochure were developed in the second round between 2020 – 2023. The project builds on the shoulders and competence of professor in choreography Leif Hernes and associate professor Ellen Os, both connected to the department of early childhood education at Oslo Met. They originally initiated the idea of making live performing arts for babies in the late nineties under the name Klangfugl. This was taken one step further with the EU-project Glitterbird. Now Leif and Ellen shared their knowledge with the three companies in GREAT art for small children vol. II; Øyteatret, Oslo Koreografiske and Shi Pratt. Three widely different and beautiful performances saw the daylight the last three years and thousands of children already have enjoyed it, either sitting in their litte boat (Øyteatret - kinShips), rolling over of laughter (Oslo Koreografiske - Soft Machine) or in the warm and including atmosphere of Shi Pratts Kaleidoscope. We hope all three performances will live happily ever after and find their way to many babies-toddlers-crawlers and runners between 0-6 years old! Enjoy!

KINSHIPS 0-2 years

Øyteateret (ØY)

kinShips is a tribute to the extended family (kin). A celebration of allied organisms that envelope us on a daily basis and protect us from intruders. The project invites the audience into the microscopic of the skin, to a universe of microbial movement. kinShips explore symbiotic coexistence and exchange. kinShips is made for either 0-2 year old’s with their adults or for children with special needs with their grown-ups. The journey takes place in your own (kin)ship; a huge single-celled bacterium with room for you and your self-chosen family. kinShips premiered in December 2021.

SOFT MACHINE 3+ years

Oslo Koreografiske

Oslo Koreografiske is a collective of artists that work choreographically with dance, sound, light, scenography and the audience itself. In Soft Machine the audience are spectators in a twisted and magnificent TV show. The three performers are dressed in colorful wigs and costumes, whilst dancing, singing and speaking American-sounding gibberishz. The scenes go from being realistic to becoming increasingly distorted and absurd. Soft Machine uses exaggeration and humor to highlight consumer culture and abundance, and the performance is as much fun for children as it is for adults. Soft Machine premiered in June 2023.
