THE HOME OF DANCE

VENUE 22

THE HOME OF DANCE

WELCOME Dance Base is The Home of Dance on the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. If you want to see great dance, then Venue 22 is your destination. In programming this year’s festival, we’ve been on a quest to show you the best: the strange and the gorgeous, the brash and the wistful, the graceful and the wild … but always the best. The result is an excellent international programme from New Zealand, Ireland, America, Poland, Taiwan, Italy, Wales and local heroes from bonnie Scotland. This programme is packed with total scoops such as top Scottish Ballet dancers making a rare appearance on the Fringe, performing live in our intimate space and award-winning shows such as Athletes by Riccardo Buscarini / Tir Danza (p9), Swing by Fishamble (p25), and Missing by David Bolger, brought to Edinburgh by CoisCéim (p21). There’s family fun to be had too, in family shows Taki Māori Haka Experience (p7) and The Cut Tuk Show and The Wonders of the Universe (p11). If your tastes tend towards the excitations of the dark side you won’t want to miss Will (p39), Salon Mika (p29) or our Polish guests Agata Maszkiewicz (p17) and Anna Nowicka (p19). There’s so much more. It’s all here, and it’s all for you.

GREEN TEA AND ZEN BAKA David WW Johnstone

1 – 24 Aug

Ease into your festival day in the garden with a refreshing cup of green tea and a mesmerising Zen-inspired performance by minimal artist David WW Johnstone. This visual haiku draws on ideas from Japanese Butoh, the Zen Buddhist sages, and John Cage, with just a gentle hint of mime and humour thrown in. An understated insight into the daydreaming mind of a Zen fool (baka). Johnstone’s previous work as artistic director of Lazzi includes Aurora Borealis (Dance Base), Oresteia (Traverse) and Witkacy Idiota (Roxy Art House).

ATHLETES Riccardo Buscarini / Tir Danza

1 – 17 Aug

Athletes is a work on competition viewed as tension between man and machine. Three enigmatic figures shift from solidarity to cruelty in a sparsely beautiful futuristic landscape created by the stark, atmospheric lighting of Lucy Hansom and Michael Mannion. The striking costumes were created by fashion designer Brooke Roberts in collaboration with Kishan Maynard-Clarke.

THE CUT TUK SHOW & WONDERS OF THE UNIVERSE Naturalis Labor / Martina Cortelazzo & Karol Cysewski 1 – 17 Aug

Close-up encounters of the silly kind. Take one award-winning Italian chef in a bikini, then add an adventure into the entire universe with three nice Welsh boys while listening to über-geek Professor Brian Cox’s dulcet tones. Martina the chef in The Cut Tuk Show whips up a delicious little something live onstage ... is she cooking or dancing? Wonders of the Universe is a hilariously surreal mash-up inspired by the documentary of the same name. You will ponder tiny things, human-sized things and things the size of the entire universe!

147 QUESTIONS ABOUT LOVE Volcano Theatre 1 – 17 Aug

He mostly talks. She mostly dances. An intimate, charming, absurd conversation between a man, a woman and an audience. Get up close and personal with this unusual and tender duet, based on a novel made entirely of questions. Are your emotions pure? Are your nerves adjustable? How do you stand in relation to the potato? Was your father an outright bastard, a medium bastard or a light bastard? Do you find these questions interesting, impertinent or plain impossible? Do you have all the answers or do you only want to ask more questions?

Poland

POLSKA Agata Maszkiewicz Polska is a shockingly subversive way to explore that dodgy sympathy and empathy divide. Introducing a rocking soundtrack that includes Miles Davis (Bitches Brew), Polish folk tunes and The Rolling Stones (Sympathy for the Devil), this stunning solo aims to, and succeeds in, provoking a visceral gut reaction that’s triggered by your own personal and private guilty pleasures. This charismatic performer, in her team Poland sprinter’s sports gear, brings a droll, disgusting and seductive character into the room, using styles as wildly diverse as twerking and folk dancing – all of them with style, grace and major in-your-face attitude.

ELVIS’STARDUST& THE TRUTH IS JUST A PLAIN PICTURE, SAID BOB Teatro delle Moire & Anna Nowicka Elvis lives! He has not left the building! Elvis’ Stardust is a short, melancholic rhapsody of small gestures, hidden glances and distant rhythms. Comical, poignant and ghost-like, a messianic star whose swift destruction left only stardust. Anna Nowicka’s quirky, gymnastic, eccentrically clever solo asks, ‘Where is the border between truth and fiction?’ Is the truth, as Bob (Dylan) suggested, just a plain picture? What, if anything, really lies beneath? Two unforgettable solos from Italy and Poland inspired by iconic music legends.

FALLING IN LOVE WITH FRIDA Caroline Bowditch There is more to Frida than her monobrow! An intimate and enticing performance that explores the life, loves and legacy of painter Frida Kahlo (1907-1954). A reclaiming of a disabled artist, a love-like obsession and an enquiry into how we shape what we are remembered for and how much we can control others' memories of us. It exposes many little-known facts about the infamous woman, remembered for her art. Where affinities and parallels are drawn, happy distractions are employed and a tale of the great concealer is revealed by and through powerful yet fragile bodies.

A ravishing male duet. Harmony in love, work and life is a tricky alchemy. Are we truly ready to surrender our precious individuality in the pursuit of happiness? It’s public too – when we openly declare ourselves a gay couple; nothing special, just an everyday reality. We created this duet as a couple then worked on it after splitting up.
