welcome autumn term 2014 Welcome to the professional programme which this term celebrates the ripeness of years, attitude and thought. For our showcase we have invited the great Angus Balbernie to Edinburgh. Angus has chosen to lead daily sessions in just about everything for just about everyone. Slanted is the name of the residency and the showcase title and even if you can't make the sessions please read his fantastic words. This time we invite you to put yourself and your work forward for our termly showcase. The work can be unfinished, up to 15 minutes max. There’s expenses only and basic lights, but mucho atmos and the ripened fruits of Mr Balbernie will also be there for all to see. Slanted will happen on the 15 of November in Studio 1. Your deadline to be part of it is 15 August. We begin this term with a wonderful Finnish dance artist, Carl Knif. Carl is the first of many exchanges which we are proposing with Nordic partners. Then more proper grown-ups in the house with David Hughes Dance and Errol White, both offering top quality class (as are our many fine guests this Autumn). We have also reinstated the Monday class due to (very excellently demanded) popular request. So please now follow that through and turn up and dance! I confess to being immaturely dizzy with delight about the whole fantastic Autumnal line-up. See you soon and often.

This can be work which is either in progress, hardly shared or brand new. The call-out will happen when the guest curator has been chosen, which will happen in the week beginning the 18 August. We are experimenting with different ways to curate the first half of these showcases, so here’s how it works this time – if you would like to be our guest curator, please send a CV and email to morag@dancebase.co.uk. Deadline is Friday 15 August. The curation role has no fee attached but you would be mentored by Morag Deyes and it’s is a fascinating insight into your dance community, the programming process and is good professional development.

ANGUS BALBERNIE RESIDENCY 3 – 14 NOVEMBER

Slanted These two weeks ask about contradictions. About what it is to be older and how our stories and bodies grow and are shared? How they move towards individual ways of “leaning into the light”. I welcome older (and younger) movers, artists interested in working with the contradictions of light and darkness, youth and age, movement and story, music and silence. I'll work with improvisation, development of individuality and performance forms. I've directed around 80 professional pieces around the world over the last 35 years, and still move between directing, performing and teaching; exploring a deep love of wilderness. Several months ago I reached 60. My sister gave me an old notebook, our father's last collected reflections, written when he was 60 and nearing the end of his life. Now 60 myself I'm pulled towards these fragments and how we "collect' our lives, how we move again. I guess I’m a director more than a choreographer, a collector of other people's movements, stories and ideas. Each morning open warm-up will be cranky stuff, exploring how a 60 year old body might move and improvise, drawing from training of Tai Chi in China 40 years ago and 35 years of Anatomical Release and Contact Impro. Soft stuff, breathing, flowing, improvising, looking for some light… To apply: Email a covering letter explain why you would like to participate in Slanted and what you hope to gain from being there, along with your CV and a link of you moving/speaking to ABalbernie@aol.com cc’ing to morag@dancebase.co.uk

residencies Programmed by Artistic Director, Morag Deyes Dance Base offers residency opportunities to professional choreographers, companies and individual artists who want to develop their work. We offer two strands of residency to support your needs. EXPLORING Exploring residencies are designed to encourage exploration, research, development and experimentation. There will be the opportunity share findings to peers and Dance Base visitors and to invite and encourage feedback. ARRIVING This residency is offered to a choreographer, company or individual who wishes to take an already-developed idea to the next stage and premiere their work in a theatre or site specific space. ‘My recent residency was an invaluable chance to develop early ideas in an exceptionally well-equipped and supportive environment. Thank you Dance Base!’ Sally Owen, Summer 2014 HOW TO APPLY

RESIDENCY 1 – 5 SEPTEMBER

Carl Knif Company New Work

Image: Yoshi Omori

We are currently programming for Spring 2015 onwards. Closing date for Spring applications is 17.00 on Fri 12 September 2014. You can access information here dancebase.co.uk/professional/residencies Application for Dream Time residencies can also be made through this form.

I’m taking part in the residency at Dance Base as the artistic director and choreographer for my company Carl Knif Company. My aim is to start the work on my new piece Friends of Dymphna (working title). The subject of the piece is depression and the fragility of the mind. In this piece I will continue my work combining text and movement. The piece will draw its material from both the experiences of the dancers as well as literature touching the subject. Andrew Solomons, The Noonday Demon, An anatomy of depression (Vintage, 2002) will serve as one point of reference. During the residency I will work with different methods of using spoken text. I will also investigate ways of creating text using one’s own experiences and memories as a starting point. In the studio I will continue to develop my methods for creating movement, which are based on the manipulation of breath. The aim is an heightened awareness of the inner an external space.

Company Class Thursday 4 September I 10.00 – 11.30 The themes of the course are approached through set material as well as improvisations.

Errol White Company New Work Errol White Company will tour their new work in Autumn this year. The new work, as yet untitled, shall work within a theatrical context whilst undeviating from pure movement. The audience will be compelled to piece together each element of the production to determine their understanding of the overall abstract narrative whilst engaging with the aesthetic quality of the choreography. During this residency the choreographers will give equal attention to the theatricality of the work focusing on the abstract in the characters, setting, and narrative and exploring the relationship between these important elements of the piece through collaboration.

Company Class Thursday 11, 18 & 25 September I 10.00 – 11.30

The principle elements of the class work will focus on skeletal alignment; articulate placement and core stability. Leading the dancers to move fluidly with precision, power and strength facilitating a neutral and controlled understanding of the body’s physicality in performance.

RESIDENCY 15 – 19 SEPTEMBER

David Hughes Dance RIKUD RIKUD was originally created 23 years ago on the dancers of London Contemporary Dance Theatre by choreographers Liat Dror and Nir Ben Gal. RIKUD is the Hebrew word for dance. The work explores – in an irreverent and often comic style – the line between performing and preparing to perform. To what extent is there such a division? In autumn 2014 DHD will travel to Israel to work with Liat and Nir to revisit and extend RIKUD. The updated version will premier at the Adama Festival in Mitzpe Ramon, Israel on Wed 8 Oct. This residency will see the company remount the original version in preparation for this project. You can see Darshan Singh Bhullers documentary on the original production here: youtube.com/watch?v=Tdg9lCuKWqc

Company Class Monday 15 September – Friday 19 September I 10.00 – 11.00 The morning will begin with a stretch, leading to gentle exercises and movement across the floor. Class will feature movement from RIKUD and other DHD repertoire.

Monica De Ioanni L ī l ā (the cosmic play)

What makes us to belong to a place? When do we embrace the existence of the Universe?

This residency it will be towards the development of L ī l ā (the cosmic play) a Dance/Live Music/Visual Theatre performance piece. During this residency Monica De Ioanni’s practice focuses on the ritualistic aspect of performance and how to create choreography as a transcendent experience for the performers that can be then shared with the audience. Her exploration will question how Balinese Mask and Circular Ceremony Dance Compositions can inform the dancer/choreographer now. How to re-connect a choreographic development to its ritualistic function of catharsis and expression? Together with musician Marion Kenny, Monica will develop a dancer/musician synergy in devising contemporary live performance.

Company Class Tuesday 23 & 30 September I 10.00 – 11.30

After body-mind approach warm up, we will explore Balinese Mask Dance (Topeng), Jodeg Dance and instant composition practice. This Company class is both for dance and theatre practitioners.

RESIDENCY 29 SEPTEMBER – 3 OCTOBER

Skye Reynolds and Skye Loneragan Skye & Skye on Skye Skye Loneragan & Skye Reynolds are two artists from live art disciplines, dance and performance/playwriting – who have migrated to Scotland from Australia nearly 15 years ago and share a namesake (the Isle of Skye) that has seen them often confused for each other. Having finally met, Skye & Skye now embark upon an exploration into the intersections of practice from where they wish to write dance poems, look at the political landscape of their other homeland from afar, and flesh out the humour born from mistaken identity.

Company Class Thursday 2 October I 10.00 – 11.30 Looking at what kind of poetry your name might inspire, we take a title and write our own dance poem. Bring a picture of a place that you feel says something about yourself.

Debbie Watson The F Word The starting point is a dialogue about Feminism: between mothers and daughters; women in their fifties and women in their twenties. The exchanges are taking place outside of the studio and the structure being used is F words. The residency will focus on developing movement inspired and influenced by those exchanges. Utilising the WM|RD Choreographic Thinking Tools and Body Mind Centering explorations, Debbie Watson will split the studio time working alone to develop her own fledgling choreographic ideas; and with other dancers to co-create movement and dance in the hope of finding a meaningful and stimulating resonance for both audience and performer.

Company Class Tuesday 7 October I 10.00 – 11.30 Suitable for intermediate to professional level, the class will focus on BMC approaches to enliven the body’s deep expressive capacity.

Andy Cannon and Natasha Gilmore Tales of a Grandson Tales of a Grandson is Andy Cannon’s version of the history of Scotland – but this is no straight and dusty history lesson: To help tell this epic tale Andy takes us on a road trip adventure with his granddad to discover Scotland’s past, its myths and curiosities (‘why are the mountains so small?’ just one of his many questions). Accompanying Andy and adding to the Tales will be a cast of dancers, a chorus of grannies and some of Scotland’s finest musicians.

Company Class Thursday 9 October I 10.00 – 11.30

Liminal Dance Lycanthrophy During this process Gemma Williams and Morven Innes will develop their current work, Lycanthropy, under the mentorship of Matthew Hawkins. We wish to research and explore ways of integrating a young cast through their observations, critical feedback and their overall involvement in the development of the piece; with the aim to produce a further developed piece which appeals further to this age group. Lycanthropy follows the story of Little Red Riding Hood, with themes and ideas that still resonate with young people today: family, obedience, rebellion, choosing one’s own path, resourcefulness and self-identity. We are interested in creating an immersive experience for the audience and transport the listener to an imaginary shared space where the story becomes ‘real’ through the combination of sound and movement.

Company Class Thursday 23 October I 10.00 – 11.30 Class will begin with exercises which focus the mind and explore movement possibilities within the body, moving onto themes explored in the residency.

Fuora Dance Project (Federica Esposito & Giulia Montalbano) New Work Fuora Dance Project, led by Federica Esposito and Giulia Montalbano, will develop a new creation inspired by Molly Bloom’s monologue taken from the masterpiece Ulysses by James Joyce. The monologue is a supreme example of the so-called “stream of consciousness” characterised by the lack of punctuation and the traditional structure of the sentence. The chapter is opened with a “Yes” and ends in the same way. It is an affirmation of love, sensuality and life and also, but not less important, of the female creative energy. The idea is to create a piece inspired by the concepts of streams, female energy, smells, gazes, relationship male-female.

Company Class Tuesday 9 December I 10.00 – 11.30 The class will be focused on release technique dealing with the use of weight, strength, off-balance and fluidity.

DEBS

Dancers Emerging Bursary Scheme This year’s excellent and experienced mentor Rhiana Laws has chosen two graduate dancers as her mentees for the next year. The bursary for 2014/15 focuses on how to reach hard to reach young people and also looks at work in young offenders’ institutions and with individuals who present challenging behaviours. It’s a tough and rewarding vocation needing real commitment and that truly changes lives in a profound and meaningful way. In fact the Bursary itself changes lives too. ‘DEBS has been a wonderful opportunity for me to continue to grow as a dance artist through experiencing new teachers, approaches and residencies. It has offered me a unique platform to learn, work and become part of the dance community. This has been through valuable mentoring, classes and performance experience which has given me vital experience whilst being in a supportive environment. I feel strongly that my year as 'a DEB' has had a huge impact on my understanding of the role and expectations of a professional dancer and that it has enabled me in gaining a contract with a dance company for next year.’ Esmee Lobley, 2013/14 DEBS
