BOARD REPORT - 3 TEACHER PROFILES - 5

TK TK-2nd Elective Teachers 7th Grade

Dear LCA Families and Friends, Welcome to the October edition of “The Chronicle!” October, as you will see, has been a busy month around our school – but boy have we had fun! From “The Bash,” homecoming, 6th Grade Academy “Cardboard Challenge,” field trips, chorus concerts, science experiments, rocket launches, dissecting pigs, college fairs, Eagle Walks, to winning some firsts – our 1st Miss Kentucky Golf , our 1st Girls Golf state title, and our 1st Junior High boys state golf title. Many events to celebrate and give thanks to our Lord! Our October board report will also illustrate the hard work and topics tackled by our various board committees. Topics ranged from advancement tools, grade analysis, balcony renovation to dress code. We appreciate the efforts of our students, teachers, administrators and parents as they tackle these topics. Each edition of “The Chronicle” will provide us with an opportunity to introduce you to members of our LCA family. In this edition, you will learn more about our educators representing preschool-2nd grade special classes, transitional kindergarten, and 7th grade. You will also meet Jacob and Autumn Glancy, alums representing the Classes of 2004 and 2005. In addition, you will meet Bill Whitaker, our athletic committee chair, and Terry Johnson, our athletics director. In keeping with the theme of athletics, I hope you enjoy an excerpt from Dr. David Prince’s book, “In the Arena … The Promise of Sports for Christian Discipleship” where he describes what sports are. Dr. David Prince is the Pastor of Preaching and Vision at Ashland Avenue Baptist Church, a professor of Christian Preaching at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and an LCA parent. Over the years, Dr. Prince has partnered with Keith Galloway, our athletics chaplain, to provide encouragement and support to our coaches, student athletes and their families. On October 30th, Mr. Galloway will host “All In,” a time to worship together and hear testimonies from students, coaches, and parents. The event will be held at 7PM in the Rose Campus Chapel. Our 4th annual Peppermints & Pearls – a holiday market boutique will be held on November 8th and 9th. 100% of the proceeds from this event will benefit LCA’s “Celebrate Teachers” program. This will mark the 17th year of the “Celebrate Teachers” program, which provides a Christmas bonus for LCA’s faculty. I encourage you to come out and support our teachers at this wonderful event!

Updates from the October board meeting held on Monday, October 22, 2018

Advancement Terri Morrical, our advancement committee chairperson, shared that the committee reviewed several of the school’s advancement tools including the community rewards program, matching gifts program, and the revamped business partner program, which is now called “Partners & Patrons.” For more information, please email advancement@lexingtonchristian.org or call (859) 4225733. The committee also discussed the process by which an organization can request a fundraiser. Requests are submitted to the “sweat equity committee.” The committee is comprised of the director of constituent relations, athletic director, principals, spiritual life directors, and president of the Parent Teacher Fellowship. Organizations can submit their request via the “Sweat Equity Form” for the committees' review and consideration. To request a copy of the form, email admissions@lexingtonchristian.org. Terri reminded the board of our upcoming event, “Peppermints & Pearls,” a holiday shopping boutique scheduled for November 8th and 9th. Proceeds for this event will benefit the “Celebrate Teachers” program. Terri also mentioned the plans for the school’s annual fund celebration. The event will be held on Saturday, January 19th, with a special guest speaker. More information regarding the event’s agenda and tickets will be shared in the next couple of weeks.

Education Last month the education committee poured through the results of our academic report card. You may recall receiving a copy of the analysis in the September edition of “Tidings.” Lori Graham, our education chairperson, shared that beginning with the 2018-2019 school year the junior high is switching from Aspire to MAP achievement testing. The MAP test is not timed and questions are adjusted to each student’s response. MAP is a good indicator of student progress because it measures a student’s academic growth from year to year. It also provides information on what a student is ready to learn next. This gives teachers immediate input on the tools and insight they need to provide differentiation for their students.

Facilities Steven Potts, facilities chair, presented a recommendation to renovate the Rose Campus main gym’s balcony. The purpose of the renovation is to provide space for the school’s archery, cheer, and dance teams. Currently these programs have to either rent practice space from another organization or use an area not designed for their programs. The renovation would provide them with a safe, dedicated space conducive to their sports’ needs. The cost of the project is around $40K. Over the years, through the hard work and good stewardship of the archery program, the team has saved the proceeds from their annual Eagle Classic Tournament. This event has become one of the leading fundraisers for the athletics program, with nearly a thousand participants! The archery team has graciously agreed to fund the vast majority of the $40K needed for this project. We want to thank our sports teams for their contributions toward the renovation of the balcony. TEACHER PROFILES - PRESCHOOL-2ND GRADE ELECTIVE TEACHERS Allison Gibson (Music) "One of my favorite memories so far was last year when a lesson I called “Fruit Salad Drum Circle” was unexpectedly turned into a music composition project by a couple of third grade classes. Most recently, another favorite memory has been having my own daughter (in 4-year-old preschool) in class for the first time! This is only my third year here at LCA, and I hope to continue making many more memories in the years to come." Education: Bachelor's Degree in Music Education Teaching Experience: 6 years (3 years at LCA)

Ginny Schreiner (Art) "The advice I would give to families is enjoy your time with your kiddos while they are at home. Take every opportunity to show them God’s love. Family Bible reading time/devotions is so important and makes a big impact in their lives." Education: Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education Teaching Experience: 13 years at LCA

Rebekah Straub (Preschool Chapel and Spanish) "I love teaching the 3 to 6 year olds because they are very hands-on, inquisitive learners, and they are normally riddled with enthusiasm about learning. Meet our incredible 7th Grade teachers. Shelia Allen (Life Science) "Something fun that no one knows about me is that I coached junior high cheerleading at LCA." Education: Bachelor's Degree in Secondary Education and Middle School Science Endorsement Teaching Experience: 20 years (19 years at LCA)

Mark Burroughs (Geography) "I love teaching this age student as they are learning who they are, what they think, outside of what they have been told. They are beginning to develop into critical thinkers. I love giving them more information in order to make them think at deeper levels." Education: Bachelor's of Arts, Master's of Art in Teaching, and Master's of Divinity Teaching Experience:

Nathaniel Cheeks (Bible) "The advice that I would you give to families is that junior high is an important transitional time as students are gearing up to enter high school and have a whole lot of new responsibilities. I would say encourage and empower your students and help them learn how to advocate for themselves because they are quickly getting to a place where that will be necessary." Education: Master's Degree in Theological Studies Teaching Experience: 2 years at LCA

Sharan Gwynn (Pre-Algebra) "I love teaching middle school because I love the kids. They are old enough to have developed a sense of self, and some thinking skills, but are young enough to be silly and honest and real. They still approach the world with a sense of wonder, see the good in people, and are willing and eager to do whatever they can. They are in a tiny time frame of their lives when they aren’t babies, and they aren’t young adults. They really are kids. They keep my perspective in check, and help me be a better person." Education: Rank I Degree in Middle School Education Teaching Experience: 38 years (2 years at LCA)

Lisa Meadows (English) "My favorite memories at LCA are too many to count!! I love the little things that happen and the encouragement that I get from the students. I was humbled with the honor of receiving the Ruth Coppler Award in 2006. Some of my most favorite times are getting to go places with the students such as Washington, D.C. and on mission trips and interact with them outside of the classroom. I also love any time that we get to spend in service to one another!" Education: Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Education Teaching Experience: 33 years (19 years at LCA)

Our Alumni Profile this month features Autumn (Class of 2005) and Jacob (Class of 2004) Glancy. Autumn and Jacob met while attending LCA and married in 2008. They are keeping the LCA family tradition going as their son now attends the school that means so much to them.

Tell us a little about yourself and your family. What are some things you would like others to know about you? Jacob and I met my junior (his senior) year of high school. We married in 2008, and are the proud parents of Winston and Addison. Winston is currently in kindergarten at the Immanuel Campus, but he attended preschool and TK at the Rose Campus, where Jacob and I first met. It is so cool seeing him as an LCA student! It is so neat to walk the halls with Winston and show him where his parents' lockers were and where Jacob first asked me out on a date. Jacob is currently running for City Council in the 9th District, which includes the Rose Campus. This was a big reason he decided to run for office, to represent LCA and be a voice. So to say God has blessed us with LCA in all ways, is an understatement! LCA is more than a school to us, it has quite literally become our family.

What aspects of your LCA involvement are you most proud of? I am most proud of helping former alums reunite and plan their high school reunions. What a gift it is to reconnect with everyone and share God's love. Jacob serves on the Long Range Planning Committee and has an investment in making sure LCA is all that it can be and more. He is proudly serving not just for Winston and his fellow classmates, but also for the teachers. It is because of the amazing teachers and administration that we are where we are today.

What advice would you give to current LCA students? Follow your faith. Respect others. And be proud to call yourself an LCA Eagle, because we PROMISE you, it is setting you up for success the rest of your life.

Bill Whitaker is beginning his fourth year on the LCA Board of Directors, where he is Chair of the Athletics Committee. In addition to serving on the board, he is the assistant coach for the LCA Boys Golf team.

What are some things you would like others to know about you and your family? My wife, Leslie, and I have lived in Lexington since 1998. I graduated from Pulaski County High School and attended Vanderbilt University earning a Bachelor of Engineering degree in electrical engineering. I have been employed at Schneider Electric since moving to Lexington. Leslie is a nurse and the clinical supervisor at Advanced Dermatology. Christian education was very important to us for our girls, so we have had them at LCA since kindergarten. Abby is currently a junior, and

Ashley is a freshman. Both girls love ballet and classical dance and spend most of their extracurricular time at the Lexington Dance Factory. They are also involved in the LCA choral department. Our family spends lots of time and effort at Immanuel Baptist Church where Leslie and I both serve as youth small group leaders. We love our church! Why did you accept an offer to serve on LCA's Board of Directors? I accepted the nomination to serve on the board as a following to what I thought God was leading me to do. After praying very hard about accepting the offer, I believe that He was calling me to serve LCA as it has served my family. What have you been most proud of since joining the board? The 6th Grade Academy! That was a big leap of faith that we took on as a school. We loved the idea but were concerned if the investment would be wise. My first impression of the finished space was that it exceeded my expectations by a mile. It was wonderful to see how the LCA staff and so many others came together to make it a success. The result is a beautiful space that we believe will serve our school for years to come. What professional expertise and skills are you most excited to share with the LCA Board? Being an engineer by trade, I feel I have an ability to think analytically. That has helped me in my roles of Facilities and Finance Chair. Most would say that I am a calm person and that is beneficial when we debate tough issues that will impact many in our school. It is important to hear all sides of a debate and use that information to make the best decision possible with the information we have. What advice would you give to current LCA families? PRAY! God calls us to be people of prayer. LCA needs our prayers. The teachers, administrators, and staff need our prayers. The students need our prayers. The board needs our prayers. We are all imperfect people trying to do the best we can with the gifts God grants us. With a praying body of believers, there is nothing His school can’t accomplish. THE CHRONICLE

Terry Johnson, Director of Athletics Tell us a little about yourself and your family. What are some things you would like others to know about you? I was born in Kettering, Ohio and accepted Christ at the age of 19. I received my undergraduate degree from Bowling Green State University and a Master's Degree from the University of Kentucky. My wife, Cindy and I live in Lexington and have two sons, Matthew (senior) and Drew (sophomore) who have attended LCA since kindergarten. Matthew has committed to attend Asbury University and play baseball there. Prior to joining LCA, I was the Executive Director of the Bluegrass Sports Commission, the organization responsible for staging, recruiting, and growing sports events in Central Kentucky. I also had the pleasure of serving as Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. Prior to that, I served as the Executive Director of the Kentucky Sports Authority for two years. I spent 11 years in collegiate athletics, working for the Big East Conference, the University of Kentucky, Morehead State University and Host Communications. Tell us about your role at LCA. What are you currently working on? I serve as the Director of Athletics and am responsible for the oversight of the athletic department, which includes the school's 23 athletics programs, more than 800 student-athletes and more than 80 coaches. I recently assumed the additional responsibilities of school-wide development and fund raising, which includes directing capital campaigns, creating a planned giving program and matching resources with needs of the school. What should families look forward to in 2018-19 from your area? We should look forward to the continued joy and excitement derived from watching our kids compete on all of our teams. We are also working on many exciting programs and growth opportunities to get involved with on the development side. Why are you proud to work at LCA? Because we get to serve God openly, invest in the spiritual lives of our kids and help grow His kingdom in a terrific environment. If asked, why would you encourage families to send their children to LCA? My wife and I can personally attest to how prepared our kids are for college, and it is due, in large part, to the loving teachers, administrators and Godly atmosphere at LCA.
