Stories of Compassion and Transformation ‘Each affects the other and the other affects the next and the world is full of stories and the stories are all one.’ Mitch Albom You are warmly invited to join us for a weekend of storytelling. Following the Compassion, Courage and Choice conference held at GRC Oxford in October, 2013, there has been an outpouring of stories and experiences of compassion. As our Community of Compassion grows, we need to find, share and preserve stories that will shape the future of health and social care, for it is the stories that lie behind the data and the statistics that drive transformation. This workshop will give you the opportunity to recognise, reflect on and create your own digital story so that we may all be reminded of our common compassion, shared humanity and our inherent inclination towards kindness. Experienced facilitators will help you will find and share ideas for a story, draft a script, record a voiceover, select (or create) suitable images, and edit your own 2-3 minute digital story. Working in small groups to build trust and safety, you will be supported in listening deeply to yourself and others and breaking down the barriers that prevent us from sharing personal stories. Your finished story will be a powerful vehicle for sharing experiences and dreams, offer inspiration and insight and remind others of the crucial need for compassion. The current wave of compassion is matched by an equally powerful swelling of interest in the art and science of storytelling. Since 2003, the Patient Voices Programme has been bringing to life stories of care and carelessness, health and illness, miraculous cures and tragic mistakes. The resulting digital stories have driven health and care characterized by humanity and compassion. Pioneering digital storytelling in healthcare, the safe, facilitative, empowering and transformational Patient Voices workshop process has helped nearly 1000 patients, service users, carers, practitioners and staff to create their own digital stories. Please join our growing community of storytellers so that your own story can become part of the bigger story, contributing to a wave of compassion that ensures care is careful, people are valued and we are all able to give the best of ourselves.
