I am humbled and deeply grateful for the unselfish support to our Annual Fund and Endowment that allows our students, faculty, and staff to boldly face the future with purpose, confidence and fortitude under the continued guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Letter from the President D e a r Pa r e n t s , A l u m n a e , a n d F r i e n d s , It is my distinct pleasure to present you with our Annual Report for Dominican Academy. This past year brought the tremendous news of our approval as an New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) accredited school. After an arduous year of self-study, we were delighted to hear this news and thrilled that the Accreditation Committee saw what we know, “Dominican Academy is a very special school.” The NYSAIS approval has helped to make clear what we value as a school and what we hope to bring into the future as we strive each day to fulfill the promises of our four pillars of Study, Building Community, Service, and Prayer. During this holy season of Advent, as we prepare for the celebration of the birth of Jesus, our thoughts turn to gratitude. The financial assistance that

Dominican Academy receives through you, our generous benefactors, allows us to continue our work as a Catholic secondary school for young women. I am humbled and deeply grateful for the unselfish support to our Annual Fund and Endowment that allows our students, faculty, and staff to boldly face the future with purpose, confidence and fortitude under the continued guidance of the Holy Spirit. And while this annual report gives numbers— important, significant numbers—I would like to bring you the stories that on the surface these numbers can’t tell. These are the stories of students praying for each other in the hallway before an exam; of student athletes encouraging one another, not when the win is in sight, but when the loss is inevitable; and of a teacher sitting patiently with a struggling student to

work through a challenging chemistry question. It is your gracious support that fuels stories like these. Thank you. As we prepare our hearts to welcome our Lord this Advent, let us pray with confidence to the Holy Family for continued blessings for our D.A. family, of which you are all a treasured part. I look forward to seeing you at the many happy D.A. events throughout the year and be assured of my prayers for your good health, happiness and enduring peace. Peace and all Good,

Alexandria M. Egler, Ph.D., P’10 President

Letter from the board of Trustees Chair D e a r F e l l o w A l u m n a e , Pa r e n t s , Fa c u lt y, S t u d e n t s , a n d F r i e n d s , I am thrilled to address you in this year’s Annual Giving Report, my first such opportunity to write to the full community of our beloved Dominican Academy. Like the dedicated board chairs who have served before me, I come to this role with a passionate devotion to our school and to every girl and teacher, every alumna and supporter, who is or was a part of our unique and intimate school community. I have been associated with Dominican Academy since beginning as a freshman in 1973. I came to D.A. from the wilds of Riverdale, where I exchanged the campus setting of my elementary school for the sophistication of Madison Avenue. Like so many of us, I was immediately enchanted by the grandeur of Friedsam’s mansion, but in an even deeper way, by the lives of those who would come to have a profound influence on me: the Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs, the lay faculty, and my fellow classmates, many of whom remain my closest friends. My memories are not unique. Countless alumnae speak about the red stairs, the friendships they formed, the academic skills that were responsible for their life’s work and success. Others also speak of the spiritual formation, which in my day— and continues into the present —included a significant message to do works of spiritual sacrifice by serving those in need. Adolescence is often a stage of development known for its focus on the self, but at D.A. in the 70’s, we marched with farm workers, met with those who were formerly incarcerated to help in their rehabilitation, and did our best to follow Jesus’s example to love others, especially those on the margins of life. It was an incredibly powerful experience to be a young teenager and to have the privilege of engaging with such

inspirational role models as: Sister Alice McCaffrey, Sister Timothy Goettisheim, Sister Ellen O’Shaughnessy, Sister Helen Lanz, Sister Helen Kieran, Sister Virginia Sweeney, Sister Mary George, Sister Cecelia Duffy, Sister Mary Jo Knittel, Brother Richard Curry, S.J., and Father Karl Laird, S.J. Not to mention the unforgettable lay faculty: Mrs. Gertrude Gunset, Miss Karen McGroary, Mrs. Susan Johann, Mr. Guy Sussman, and Madame Jeanine Haimo, to name a few. Some 50 years later, I can rattle off these names as if it were 1973. Their influence is still that much a part of my life. As Chair of the Board, I am a frequent guest to the school, and when I visit D.A., the students look just as we did: eager, earnest, and enthusiastic. I think the uniforms are infinitely better looking today, and while the majority of the teachers are lay faculty, the heart of the lessons and the experience of D.A. remain the same. Today’s D.A. student is on fire with academic promise, laughing in groups of girls as we once did, and developing their skills to be of service and to spread the truth of the gospels. As recipients of the Dominican tradition, today’s students are preaching the love of God with their lives and work. I see it in the hallways, on the red stairs, and in those intimate groupings of girls studying together in the library, or praying together at St. Vincent Ferrer, or in the school’s chapel. If I close my eyes, today’s D.A. girl looks just like my friends in 1973, and the laughter carries the same delightful soprano range that was once our own song of friendship and joy. It’s the same wonderful school it was for us, and for all alumnae from every decade.

lives to preach the good news of God’s abundant love. I know that in small and large ways you are doing so. That’s what Dominican Academy compels us to do. I also hope that the many individuals and organizations included in this edition of our Annual Giving Report will inspire you to show your gratitude to the men and women who taught at D.A. and to the girls who attended it. As alumnae, we were supported by the generations before us. It is now our chance to do likewise. Today’s D.A. students and faculty need your annual monetary gifts. Dominican Academy grows in strength from the financial help of its alumnae, parents, and friends. The school needs every one of you to do your part to continue these traditions within our very special and beloved Dominican Academy by making philanthropic donations to ensure that our girls of today have the opportunities we once had. I know I can count on your generosity to Dominican Academy. With admiration and gratitude,

Virginia Connor, ‘77 Chair of the Board of Trustees

Letter from the Executive Director of Development

D e a r D o m i n i c a n A c a d e m y C o m m u n i t y, I am pleased to write my second letter as Executive Director of Development and to express gratitude for the generous care and financial support from our alumnae, parents, foundations, and friends during the 2022 – 2023 academic year. In addition to enabling us to continue providing academic excellence and long-beloved D.A. traditions, your support allows us to provide a safe space for students to grow and experience those invaluable aha moments that lead to true learning and greater insight. I have been blessed to witness many of these occasions. These moments include when students deeply care for the wellbeing of others, express joy of learning, or when they realize the depth of their capability and intellect,

Dominican Academy fosters students’ ability to discern the possibilities of their educational interests, be it STEM, English, Classical Language, music, or theology just to name a few. Thank you! I look forward to working with each of you as we advance Dominican Academy’s mission and commitment to the Dominican pillars of Study, Community, Service, and Prayer.

Looking to the future, I am confident that with God’s grace and your generosity and investments, Dominican Academy will continue to thrive and uphold its outstanding reputation as the only allhonors Catholic preparatory high school for girls in New York State, providing a

125th Anniversary Giving Celebrating our Past—Embracing our Future Dominican Academy celebrated a spectacular milestone 125th Anniversary in 2022 culminating with a closing Mass on December 10, 2022. We affirmed our dedication to our Dominican pillars that embody the D.A. mission and pledge: Study, Community, Service, and Prayer. We engaged our community in meaningful and measurable ways and raised over $2M for D.A.’s endowment to invest in our future and to support scholarships and tuition-aid.

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS

Departments at Dominican Academy may be endowed with a gift of $250,000 to the academy. Endowed departments assist with faculty salaries, professional development, and enhanced resources for students within that department.

Endowed Scholarships at D.A. provide vital tuition support for students. Scholarships may be endowed in the donor’s name or in honor or in memory of loved ones, and may be paid off over several years. Interest earned on the principal sum is used to provide a scholarship in perpetuity. Endowing a scholarship may include gifts from your employer to reach minimal donations needed:
