Economy Forecasts Looking for a New Career? Become a Financial Planner Improve for 20 US 24

Becoming a financial planner offers both financial rewards and the chance to help others. Whether you’re a recent graduate exploring your career path or a mid-career professional seeking change, this growing profession may be the right fit for you.

he U.S. economy appears poised for a stronger performance this year compared to earlier predictions by business economists, as indicated by a recent survey.

The National Association for Business Economics forecasts a 2.2% growth rate for the economy after factoring in inflation, a significant increase from the 1.3% projected in the previous survey conducted in November by economists from various sectors.

The recent development serves as a strong indication of the economy’s resilience, surpassing expectations of a recession. Initially, it was believed that the implementation of high interest rates to curb inflation would adversely affect the economy. The intention behind these high rates was to slow down economic growth, for instance, by increasing the cost of mortgages and credit card bills, with the aim of stifling inflation.

Despite the high rates, the job market and U.S. household spending have displayed remarkable resilience, leading to increased expectations for the future. Ellen Zentner, the chief U.S. economist at Morgan Stanley and president of the NABE, attributes the 2024 upgrade to various factors, including government and household spending. Furthermore, economists have more than doubled their estimates for job gains in the economy this year, although it is still expected to be lower than the previous year.

Another positive factor is the cooling of inflation since its peak two summers ago. While prices remain higher than desired by consumers, inflation has slowed down enough for most forecasters to anticipate interest rate cuts starting in mid-June.

Public dissatisfaction with rising prices has emerged as a key concern in President Joe Biden’s campaign for re-election. Despite a decrease in inflation rates and approaching the Federal

Reserve’s desired level, a significant number of Americans are dissatisfied with the fact that prices are still approximately 19% higher than when Biden assumed office.

The Federal Reserve, responsible for determining short-term interest rates, has indicated its intention to lower rates multiple times throughout the year. This move is expected to alleviate economic pressure while boosting prices for stocks and other investments.

It is widely known that rate changes have a slow and arduous journey through the economy before they can fully take effect. Consequently, previous rate hikes that commenced two years ago still have the potential to push the economy towards a recession.

According to a survey conducted by the NABE, 41% of respondents identified high rates as the most significant risk to the economy. This percentage was more than double the number of respondents who expressed concerns about a potential credit crunch or the escalation of conflicts in Ukraine or the Middle East.

While the outlook for the U.S. economy remains positive, expectations for the global economy are less optimistic. The head of the World Trade Organization cautioned that war, uncertainty, and instability are burdening the international economy, urging the bloc to embrace reforms.

Rising prices of essential commodities such as food and energy are placing a financial strain on individuals, leading to heightened political frustration, as stated by Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the director-general of the WTO.

“Higher prices for food, energy and other essentials are stinging people’s pockets and “fueling political frustration,” she said.

BIDEN-HARRIS CAMPAIGN APPOINTS BLACK MEDIA DIRECTOR FOR VOTER OUTREACH

ith hopes of strengthening its connection with Black voters, the Biden-Harris 2024 campaign has hired Jasmine Harris as the Director of Black Media. Harris previously held a similar role for Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Harris, who announced via email, will spearhead the campaign’s efforts to engage and mobilize Black communities.

The decision follows the Biden-Harris re-election campaign’s significant investment in early ad purchases targeted at Black communities, more than a year ahead of the upcoming Election Day on Nov. 5. However, despite tens of millions in ad buys directed at African Americans, the campaign still hasn’t included the Black Press of America, one of the major catalysts in Biden’s 2020 campaign victory over the twice-impeached and four-times indicted former President Donald Trump. The trade association, the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), represents the 250 African American-owned newspapers and media companies that comprise the Black Press of America, founded before the end of slavery in 1827 in New York.

The Black Press of America, which includes the Washington Informer, has reached out on multiple occasions to the Biden-Harris campaign, the Democratic National Committee, and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Still, Quentin Fulks, the Principal Deputy Campaign Manager, emphasized to TheGrio the importance of mobilizing the diverse Biden-Harris coalition that

secured their victory in 2020. “Black voters are a critical part of that winning coalition,” Fulks stated. He also highlighted the campaign’s historic and early investment in Black media, starting in August 2023, and its on-the-ground organizing initiatives in key communities.

“There’s no one better equipped to continue to build on that work and communicate the stakes of this election directly to Black voters across the country,” he said of Harris, who expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with the campaign.

“Black reporters and outlets must always have a seat at the table as it relates to our nation’s political leadership, especially when the stakes are as high as they are this election,” Harris affirmed.

“Black reporters and outlets must always have a seat at the table as it relates to our nation’s political leadership, especially when the stakes are as high as they are this election,” Harris affirmed.

Democratic strategist Joel Payne praised the party’s commitment to engaging with core constituencies and applauded the Biden-Harris campaign’s decision to appoint a Director of Black Media.

“These types of investments in experienced staff show that the president and his team understand what it will take to keep their coalition together for 2024,” Payne stated.

Embracing the Power of The Importance and Benefits of Family Volunteering

IWomanhood

As we embark on the journey of Women’s History Month, it’s crucial to pause and ponder the amazing strides we’ve made and the noticeable obstacles that still lie ahead. This is not simply a commemoration; it’s a call to action, a testament to the resilience, strength, and unwavering spirit of women worldwide.

Women are powerful beyond measure. It is in the very fabric of our society that women have woven threads of courage, determination, and vast potential.

Yet, despite undeniable contributions to this world, women continue to grapple with systemic inequalities, gender-based violence, and the pervasive glass ceilings that hinder our progress. The current landscape of women’s issues is both a battlefield and a sanctuary— a battleground where we confront injustices head-on and a sanctuary where we find solace in sisterhood, solidarity, and shared purpose.

One of the prevailing trends in women’s issues today is the unyielding demand for gender equality in all spheres of life. From boardrooms to classrooms, from legislative chambers to living rooms, women are advocating for equitable representation, fair wages, and opportunities devoid of discrimination. Various advocacy movements have ignited a global reckoning, laying bare the prevalence of crimes against women while mobilizing survivors to reclaim their voices and own their narratives.

Moreover, the pandemic has exacerbated existing disparities, disproportionately impacting women, particularly women of color and disregarded communities. From facing heightened risks of job loss to pervasive economic instability, women have borne the brunt of this crisis, yet women rise!

Amidst the adversity, we’ve witnessed the resilience of the feminine spirit, the power of womanhood, as women have emerged as CEOs, entrepreneurs, frontline workers, innovators, agents of change and pivot queens.

While women’s experiences are diverse, complex, and interconnected, encompassing race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, ability, and other dimensions of identity; we also must be inclusive, centering the voices and experiences of all women, particularly those at the margins.

While taking action and standing in solidarity are important, unapologetic self-love and empowerment are the foundations that beckon us to come closer. For some, that foundation is either non-existent, crumbling, or being gradually chipped away. It is time to love ourselves to wholeness and affirm our worth.

Throughout this Women’s History Month, let us honor the past, celebrate the present, and envision a future where every woman and girl can thrive, unencumbered by barriers or bias. Let’s also celebrate the creativity and cultural contributions of women. From art and literature to music and film, women enrich our lives and broaden our horizons. Let’s amplify their voices and ensure their stories are heard and valued. Above all, let us honor ourselves, our purpose, our values, and our beliefs.

There is no doubt that women possess the power to transform the world, and it is imperative for us to recognize and embrace this inherent strength. By understanding the depth of our power and harnessing it to uplift and empower others, we can truly make a real and sustainable difference.

Bound together by our collective strength and wisdom, we hold the key to unlocking even more extraordinary achievements far beyond this moment in time.

To all women, as we revel in the beautiful focus on us this month, let us affirm the undeniable truth of our worth, the unyielding power of our voices, and the limitless potential that resides within each of us through these powerful affirmations:

Efforts to Restore Historic Houston Black Cemeteries Continue

olunteers gathered to clean up Olivewood and College Memorial Park Cemetery in honor of Black History Month. These two historic African American gravesites in Houston are part of the City of Houston’s Department of Neighborhoods Volunteer Initiative Program.

VOlivewood Cemetery, located along a bend in White Oak Bayou and covering about seven acres of land, is Houston’s first African American incorporated cemetery, established in 1875. The cemetery is the final resting place of some of the city’s prominent African Americans, including Elias Dibble, the first Black ordained Methodist minister in the country. Descendants of Olivewood, along with dedicated volunteers, are working to restore and preserve the cemetery, which was once forgotten and battling against nature and erosion.

College Memorial Park on West Dallas Street, founded in 1896, is one of Houston’s oldest African American cemeteries. Neglect and vandalism over the years have led to the establishment of the College Park Cemetery Association to restore the gravesite. Notable figures buried at the site include Jack Yates, the first pastor of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church.

The cleanup events involved tasks such as picking up debris, raking leaves, trimming tree limbs, leaf blowing, edging graves and bushes, and lawn mowing. Councilmember Abbie Kamin, representing the district that includes Olivewood Cemetery near the Heights, emphasized the importance of preservation citing how the community needs “to show our love for these really important cemeteries.”

DID YOU KNOW?

SHIRLEY CHISHOLM is best known for becoming the first Black congresswoman in 1968, representing New York in the U.S. House of Representatives for seven terms. Four years later, she became the first major-party Black candidate to make a bid for the U.S. presidency. In 1969, Chisholm became one of the founding members of the Congressional Black Caucus.

Mark McKinnon, a landscape architect and the president of the College Memorial Park Association has been leading the volunteer efforts to preserve the cemetery and its historical significance. According to McKinnon, it is crucial to maintain the cleanliness of the cemetery in order to make it welcome, safe, and accessible for people to connect with the past. He believes that by doing so, the descendants of those buried there will have a greater chance of locating the gravesites of their loved ones and ancestors. This, in turn, allows them to share historical information with various generations.

“To remain clean is critical to make it welcome and make it safe and make it accessible for people to engage with the past,” he said. “The descendants of those who are buried there have a much greater opportunity to find the grave sites of their loved ones of their ancestors and share history and information to a variety of generations.”

McKinnon also mentioned that the cemetery used to be much larger, but due to financial burdens, a portion of it was sold off for the development of an apartment complex by the Allen Brothers. This ongoing struggle puts the site at risk, and McKinnon believes that a similar situation could happen again. To address this issue, the association is working toward establishing a financial foundation. Currently, a significant portion of the funding comes from volunteers who contribute to the maintenance of the site.

he Texas state government has taken control of approximately 85 schools in the Houston district, most of which serve Latino or Black communities. They’ve standardized teaching methods and curricula, converted some school libraries into discipline centers, and reassigned or removed teachers and librarians. This intervention was purportedly done to address long-standing educational failures, particularly in literacy and math, among the district’s predominantly Latino and Black student population. However, critics argue that these actions echo past practices of unequal education for minority communities, which were historically underfunded and underserved.

Thomas Saenz from the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) emphasized that solving educational inequities requires comprehensive attention and resources. The state’s recent actions, including the conversion of school libraries and removal of staff, have exacerbated existing inequalities within the district. While some schools have not been affected, the changes disproportionately impact schools serving minority communities. “The problems that created educational inequities can’t be solved by one element,” said Saenz, president and general counsel of MALDEF. He added, “You need comprehensive attention, resources, monitoring. To turn around a school, much less a district,” he said, “that takes resources and that’s the real problem. These overwhelmingly Black and brown districts are starved of resources.”

The state’s history of discriminatory educational policies, including segregation and underfunding,

Texas Enacts Changes as School Choice Debates Continue

has perpetuated disparities in education. These systemic inequities, coupled with biased standardized testing and inadequate funding, continue to hinder the academic success of students of color and those from low-income backgrounds.

Parents have voiced concerns about the abrupt changes imposed on their children’s schools, including scripted curricula and the removal of essential resources like libraries. They perceive these changes as detrimental to their children’s education and well-being, feeling marginalized and powerless in the decision-making process.

“A school district that has one budget, one governing body, one superintendent, should ensure that every school at a particular level, every high school, every

middle school, every elementary school has the same services, the same access and that’s what this does not provide,” Saenz stated.

While state officials defend the changes as necessary to improve academic performance, critics argue that such reforms overlook systemic issues and exacerbate existing inequities. The ongoing struggle for equal education in Texas reflects a broader national challenge in ensuring equitable access to quality education for all students, regardless of race or socioeconomic background.

Have you heard the GOOD news?

Houston’s own Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, along with her BeyGOOD Foundation, has announced the Cécred x BeyGOOD Fund, which provides financial assistance to cosmetology students and professional hair stylists within the beauty industry.

That’s right! An annual $500,000 will be given in scholarships and salon business grants. Five locations have been chosen due to their large,

diverse community of hairstylists. They are: Houston, Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, and New Jersey.

Houston’s Franklin Institute had the honor of being selected as the one and only area cosmetology school scholarship partner. Tina Knowles-Lawson, who was a Houston-area hairstylist and salon owner for several years, is a proud alumna of the institute, adding to the honor as it celebrates 100 years of training and serving the Houston community.

he Board of Managers in Houston ISD has given their unanimous approval to a fresh academic calendar. This calendar will bring about some changes for the upcoming school year, per reports. Firstly, students will begin their classes on August 12, which is more than two weeks earlier than the previous year’s start date of August 28. Additionally, the school year will end on June 4, allowing students to enjoy their summer break. Moreover, the new calendar will also provide students with more instructional days, increasing from 172 to 180 days.

“We know that the school calendar impacts the lives of many families, so I am glad that HISD implemented a process this year that allowed for significant input from the community,” Audrey Momanaee, President of the HISD Board, stated in a release. “We want to thank those who shared their thoughts and comments with us as they were instrumental in the process. This approved calendar reflects the district’s effort to ensure students have the learning time they need while balancing the needs of our diverse community.”

The board’s decision to become a District of Innovation in December allowed HISD to start school earlier than usual. scholarships will have on the students. “I think students need an extra little boost of help to get the funds needed or get the motivation needed as well to actually go and follow their dreams that they’re actually trying to pursue,” he added. “With BeyGOOD and Beyoncé and Cécred all chipping in to help fund at least five future stylists to go to school and to follow their dreams, I think its amazing.”

The application deadline is March 20, 2024, and $10,000 Financial Aid Student Scholarships will be granted.

Applicants must:

• Be either currently enrolled in Franklin Institute or in receipt of an acceptance letter

• Demonstrate need due to financial hardship

• Complete the application

• Reside in Houston

Franklin Institute provides $8 haircuts at all locations, and a Senior Day every Wednesday for the elderly to get a wash, blow-dry and flat iron for $10.

The new calendar includes holidays such as Rosh Hashanah and Good Friday, which are important religious holidays for the Jewish and Christian communities respectively. Additionally, Eid al-Fitr, a Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, and Chavez Huerta Day, which has been recognized as a holiday by HISD since 2020, both fall on March 31 in 2025. Students will have the day off on these holidays as well. Thanksgiving break in November will give students and employees a full week off, and there will be a twoweek winter break from December 23 to January 3. The spring break started on March 10 and will end on March 14. In total, students will have 11 holidays throughout the year and there will be nine staff development days.

While students will start classes on August 12, school leaders will begin their induction and preparation on July 22, which will continue until July 29. New staff

members will be required to attend on July 30 and 31. All staff members will participate in induction and preparation from August 1 to August 9.

The decision to adopt this calendar came after a meeting where many students, parents, and teachers expressed their dissatisfaction with Miles’ leadership. Chief Academic Officer Kristen Hole also presented information showing that the district is making progress toward meeting college, career, and military readiness goals. The district aims to increase the number of students completing career and technical education programs and qualifying for college credit by 1% compared to last year, with a planned 15% increase over the next five years.

During the board meeting, around 100 people from the audience reportedly rebelled against the reading curriculum in Miles’ New Education System. They expressed their dissatisfaction by reading novels. This curriculum reportedly gives preference to short passages instead of full-length books, which are commonly used in other schools’ curricula.

Additionally, the board made some important decisions. They agreed to compensate teachers for the day when schools were closed in January due to the freezing weather. Moreover, they allowed high school juniors and seniors to have more than two absences so they can explore colleges, trade schools, military institutions, and professional workplaces.

HTEXAS TRANSFER STUDENTS STRUGGLE TO COMPLETE DEGREES,

recent study by the Community College Research Center and Aspen Institute looked at how many students in Texas who start at community college and then transfer to a four-year college actually finish their bachelor’s degree within six years. They found that only 45% of students overall get their bachelor’s degree in that time. Black students and adults have an even harder time, with only 33% and 37% completing their degrees, respectively.

Community colleges are often seen as a cheaper way to start working toward a bachelor’s degree. But this study, the first to look at transfer outcomes based on race, income, and age, suggests that transfer students need more help to finish their degrees.

Low-income and adult learners are less likely to transfer to a four-year university from a community college compared to other students.

During 2023, Texas changed how it funds community colleges to encourage more transfers. Now, community colleges get more money if their students earn at least 15 semester credit hours before moving to a four-year university. In the first year of this new funding, Texas community colleges earned almost $327 million for sending students to four-year colleges.

But just transferring doesn’t guarantee success. Many classes taken at community colleges don’t count toward a bachelor’s degree. And even for those who do graduate, it often takes too long, which means they end up paying more for college and delaying their entry into the workforce.

Public universities in Texas are also struggling to support transfer students because they lack enough staff and funding.

To help students avoid wasting time and money on unnecessary classes, Texas passed Senate Bill 25. This law requires universities to share a recommended list of courses for each major, so students know what to take at community colleges. However, many of these plans are still confusing.

To improve this, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board is identifying “field of study” courses that are guaranteed to transfer to any public university in the state. The goal is to ensure that up to 60 credit hours, which is the total needed for an associate degree in Texas, can be applied to university degree programs. Participating in dual enrollment programs, which allow students to earn college better transfer outcomes. colleges should advise degree before transthis are much more their bachelor’s degree six years. In Texas, students can automatically earn an associate’s degree if they complete the Texas core curriculum and the required courses for their major.

istorically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the United States face significant challenges with their endowments, which are notably underfunded compared to other institutions. None have yet reached the $1 billion milestone, although Howard University is making progress toward this goal. While Ivy League universities receive substantial donations from wealthy alumni, HBCUs primarily rely on federal grants for funding.

“Where we are with HBCUs is not for lack of interest, it’s really for lack of resources,” stated Edward Smith-Lewis, UNCF’s Vice President of Strategic Partnerships and Institutional Programs. “That’s a byproduct of a long history of being undervalued, underfunded, and under-supported.”

Addressing HISTORIC BLACK COLLEGE Endowment Challenges STUDY FINDS

According to recent research by PGIM and UNCF, HBCUs struggle due to a lack of resources, stemming from a long history of undervaluation and underfunding. The study surveyed endowment professionals from both HBCUs and non-HBCUs, revealing that pooling assets for investment could be a solution for HBCU endowments to grow.

On average, HBCUs have fewer investment professionals on staff compared to non-HBCUs, and they tend to adopt more conservative approaches to risk management due to resource constraints. Limited access to investment managers, especially those delivering high returns, exacerbates the problem, as many HBCUs cannot meet the minimum capital requirements.

To address these challenges, UNCF received a $100 million grant from the Lilly Endowment to establish a pooled endowment for its member institutions. This

tailored to the unique risk tolerances and spending rates of HBCUs. OCIO providers should offer more than standard investment portfolios, providing education and expertise to support the growth of HBCU endowments. Ultimately, collaboration between HBCUs and investment managers is crucial for overcoming endowment challenges and ensuring the financial sustainability of these institutions.

“There needs to be a little bit of grace from the fund managers to understand that these institutions are stuck between a rock and a hard place,” Smith-Lewis said. “I think there’s an opportunity outside of training. They can help with creating solid investment policy statements. It’s not a huge lift, but it would be a gigantic step forward.”

WHY YOU SHOULD AVOID DIY DENTAL TRENDS

DIY activities, like swapping a lighting fixture or painting your living room, are popular ways to accomplish your to-do list. But as anyone who has tackled too big of a project knows, some jobs are best left to the professionals. That includes your dental health.

You may have already seen DIY dentistry products, such as at-home whitening kits, mouthguards or teeth aligners. These often guarantee fast, easy ways

to solve your oral health issues without the involvement of a dentist or an orthodontist (a dentist who specializes in the bite and alignment of your teeth).

“Dental products are never one-size-fits-all,” said American Dental Association (ADA) president, Linda Edgar, D.D.S. “No two mouths are alike, which is why it’s important to work directly with an ADA dentist or orthodontist to determine the precise care that your body needs.”

Skipping the dentist chair and “fixing” your teeth at home can lead to bigger, sometimes irreversible problems. For some people with more complex dental health needs, using an at-home aligner may cause bone loss, lost teeth, receding gums, bite problems,

jaw pain and other damaging and permanent issues. You might also not be aware of other dental issues that should be addressed before you start moving teeth.

“Patients are understandably drawn to these DIY treatments because they might struggle to fit a dentist appointment into their schedule or they assume at-home care will cost less,” Dr. Edgar said. “But when these products cause major issues, patients end up spending more time and more money trying to reverse that damage. Instead, trained ADA dentists and orthodontists can talk through patients’ budget concerns and offer them a wider variety of dependable, approved treatment options.”

In between dental checkups, look for products with the ADA Seal of Acceptance. These have been independently evaluated by experts and recognized to be both safe and effective. When you choose one of these options, you can be assured that your care is backed by evidence-based research and generations of scientific knowledge.

Whether its teeth grinding or a toothache, talk to your dentist before trying to solve your dental problems on your own. A dentist can help you find a personalized treatment plan that’s right for you, monitor your progress and make recommendations on how to manage your oral health outside of the office.

To look for an ADA dentist in your area, visit findadentist.ada.org.

“The ADA’s primary concerns with DIY dentistry are, and always have been, patient safety and quality care,” Dr. Edgar said. “Our job as dentists is to put patient health first.”

Unveiling the Hidden Health Risks of Spider Veins in Women

pider veins, those tiny yet visible veins that often appear on the legs, can be a source of embarrassment for many women.

While they are commonly dismissed as a cosmetic concern, their presence might indicate a deeper underlying issue: venous insufficiency, also known as vein disease. This condition, often overlooked, can have significant implications for women’s health beyond mere aesthetics.

Vein disease occurs when the valves within the veins fail to function properly and leads to an impaired return blood from the legs to the heart. This dysfunction leads to blood pooling in the veins, causing them to swell and become visible beneath the skin, manifesting as spider veins or bulging varicose veins. While anyone can develop spider veins, they are more prevalent in women, with hormonal fluctuations, pregnancy, and genetics playing significant roles.

The connection between spider veins and vein disease is not merely coincidental. Spider veins are often an early warning sign of this circulatory disorder. If left untreated, vein disease can progress, resulting in more severe symptoms such as leg swelling, pain, skin changes, and even venous ulcers. Understanding the potential health risks associated with vein disease underscores the importance of seeking medical attention for spider veins beyond cosmetic concerns. Women, especially those with a family history of venous disease or who spend prolonged periods standing or sitting, should be vigilant about monitoring their vein health.

Diagnosing vein disease typically involves a physical examination and an ultrasound. Fortunately, several

treatment options are available to manage vein disease and alleviate its symptoms and can be done in an office setting. Lifestyle modifications, such as regular exercise, elevating the legs, and wearing compression stockings, can help improve circulation and prevent the progression of the condition.

For more advanced cases, minimally invasive procedures like sclerotherapy or radiofrequency treatment may be recommended to close off or remove the affected veins. These procedures target the underlying problem, promoting better venous function and overall well-being.

Ignoring the signs of vein disease can have serious implications for women’s health and quality of life.Vein disease not only affects physical comfort but can also impact mobility, productivity, and emotional well-being. Moreover, the risk of complications such as blood clots or skin infections underscores the importance of timely intervention.

In conclusion, while spider veins in women are often dismissed as a cosmetic concern, they can serve as a crucial indicator of underlying vein disease in women. Recognizing this connection empowers women to prioritize their vein health and seek appropriate medical care.

Reincke Vein Center offers complimentary consultations for all cosmetic patients, ensuring comprehensive education and evaluation prior to any cosmetic treatments. By addressing vein disease early on, women can mitigate its progression and enjoy improved vein function and overall health.

“We have been performing in our communities across the country service and support, and I have always envisioned in the beginning that by now, we would’ve had a cure, so that was my main goal and my main focus,” Jackson told d-mars in an interview. “I’d say we’ve made a great impact, because when I first started, people ran away saying, ‘ There’s that breast cancer lady.’ They didn’t want to hear anything about breast

cancer, so in that respect, our community is listening.” As part of the 30th anniversary celebrations, the organization will launch a new website in early spring, host 30 for 30 fundraisers, and have a Pretty in Pink 30th Anniversary Luncheon on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024, in Houston.

The historic Stop the Silence Walk will also return for its 14th year on April 10, 2024, during National Minority Health Awareness Month. The walk will be held at Lynn Eusan Park at the University of Houston Central Campus located at 4400 Calhoun Dr., Houston, TX 77004. The annual 5k remains the only national breast cancer walk hosted by a Black-led organization for Black breast cancer survivors.

“Our Stop the Silence 5K Walk/Run is more than just a race; it’s a movement. Each step taken symbolizes the journey and courage of breast cancer survivors, honors the memory of those we lost to breast cancer, and amplifies the importance of early detection in the Black community,” Jackson said.

Each year, over 3,000 participants from around the United States come together to walk in honor, memory, and celebration of the women they love who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Black women are still

42% more likely to die of breast cancer than white women. Black women under 35 get breast cancer at two times the rate of white women and die at three times the rate.

“We can see that there is a breast cancer crisis because we have not come to a point where the women in our community are surviving breast cancer as they should. As a 31-year breast cancer survivor, I have seen where women have not been able to get the best service because of the lack of facilities in their area or their city and they don’t have the wherewithal to go to other cities to better hospitals. That’s a very major problem in our community,” Jackson said.

The walk is supported by Pfizer, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Eisai, Lilly, and Merck. A portion of the funds raised from the walk support the Karen E. Jackson Breast Cancer Assistance Program (BCAP). Established in 2006, BCAP provides much-needed financial support to survivors and pays for mammograms for uninsured and underinsured women nationwide. To date, BCAP has provided nearly $1.4 million in financial support and early detection screenings.

4 Things Millennials and GenZers Should Know About Life Insurance

or a Millennial or GenZer who is young and healthy, life insurance may be the last thing on their mind.

FHowever, life is unpredictable and having coverage is important in the event of unforeseen circumstances.

According to Bankers Life, a national life and health insurance brand, these are four reasons why Millennials and GenZers should consider life insurance coverage.

1. PEOPLE RELY ON YOU.

Life insurance promises to pay your loved ones a sum of money in the event you pass away. If you’re in a committed relationship, engaged, married or have children, having life insurance is key to protecting those people who matter most to you. If you’re gone, your life insurance benefits can help your loved ones replace your income and maintain their home and lifestyle.

And even if you’re single and don’t have children, chances are there are still people who would be financially impacted if you were to pass away. For example, life insurance can help

protect parents, siblings and loved ones from your burial expenses. And if someone has ever co-signed a loan or credit card for you, life insurance can help protect them from your debts.

2. LIFE INSURANCE TENDS TO COST LESS WHEN YOU’RE YOUNGER.

Life insurance premiums, what you pay in exchange for coverage, are calculated based on many factors, beginning with how much coverage you’re purchasing and the type of policy. Then, your personal information and risk level are considered. Your age, health and life expectancy are all factored in when determining the premium amount.

That said, the younger and healthier you are, the less your life insurance will likely cost. When you lock in low, long-term rates in your 20s or 30s, you can enjoy them for decades to come. Further, if you develop an illness later in life, your coverage cannot be revoked if you keep paying your premiums.

3. YOUR EMPLOYER POLICY MAY NOT BE ENOUGH.

Does your employer provide free or low-cost life insurance? Employersponsored life insurance is a great benefit, but it may not be enough, especially if you own a home, are married or have children. This is because workplace policies often only provide a basic minimum amount of

coverage, and you probably can’t keep the coverage if you change jobs. That’s why many people decide to purchase their own individual policies outside of work.

4. CHOOSING THE RIGHT POLICY CAN HELP YOU MEET OTHER FINANCIAL GOALS.

Life insurance coverage falls into two main categories: term and permanent. Term life insurance covers you for a certain number of years before coverage ends.

Permanent life insurance covers you for your lifetime, plus can also feature a money savings component that enables you to build cash value. There are several distinct types of permanent policies, including whole life and universal life. Depending on the type of policy, cash value grows from your deposits; interest earned; and/or growth based on the stock market, an index, or investments. Typically, you can withdraw or borrow from your policy’s cash value as needed. For more information on life insurance, reach out to a Bankers Life agent or visit bankerslife.com.

Obtaining life insurance when you’re young and healthy may not be top of mind, but it’s an important part of a holistic financial plan and can protect the people you love.

SHORT-TERM HARDSHIP OPTIONS

your mortgage. If you have overcome a short-term hardship but are unable to afford these options, a “payment deferral” may be a good solution. This reinstates the mortgage to “current status” by deferring missed payments into a non-interest-bearing account that becomes due when you sell or refinance your home or pay off your mortgage. You will not be required to make monthly payments on the deferred balance until the payoff date.

LONG-TERM HARDSHIP OPTIONS

If you anticipate long-term financial struggles, you may wish to speak to your loan servicer about a “loan modification.” This written agreement will permanently change one or more terms of your original loan agreement to make it more affordable and sustainable.

amount than you owe. It also forfeits your negotiating power on the property’s sales price. With a short sale, you will not see proceeds from the sale and you must wait a certain period of time, which may be anywhere from 2 to 4 years, before qualifying for a new mortgage.

GETTING HELP

Housing counselors are much more than a go-to resource for homebuyers. They’re also able to help current homeowners manage debt, rebuild credit and work with their loan servicers to avoid foreclosure.

f financial hardship has put you at risk of missing a mortgage payment, you should familiarize yourself with the relief options available to you and be prepared to act quickly.

According to Freddie Mac, your first step should be to contact your mortgage company to determine which course of action makes the most sense for your circumstances. You may also want to brush up on the terms below to understand the best path forward based more fully on your situation:

If you are unable to pay your mortgage, whether due to disaster or other financial hardship, the most popular and widely available mortgage assistance is “forbearance.” This is when your mortgage company allows you to make a reduced payment or pause your payment for a specified period up to 12 months. When this period ends, you will make up your payments in one of several ways. The fastest way is through “reinstatement,” which means getting current on your mortgage by paying the owed amount in one lump sum. Alternatively, you can set up a “repayment plan,” whereby you pay a little more each month on top of

If homeownership is no longer affordable for you, there are strategies to help you avoid the costly impacts of foreclosure. One of those is “selling with equity.” With this option, you can use the proceeds from selling your home to pay off any remaining mortgage debt. If the home’s value is greater than the amount you owe, you keep the excess funds. Alternatively, you can voluntarily transfer your property title to the mortgage company in exchange for a cancellation of your debt and a graceful exit from your home. This maneuver is known as a “deed-in-lieu of foreclosure.” Finally, if you’ve exhausted all other options, a “short sale” may be your best choice. This refers to selling your home for a lower

If you’re facing financial hardship, reach out to a HUD-certified housing counselor at one of Freddie Mac’s Borrower Help Centers or Borrower Help Network for free assistance. HUD-certified counselors are trained, independent professionals who will listen, offer advice, and help you make informed decisions about your finances and home. Visit myhome. freddiemac.com to learn more. If you’re seeking counseling services on your own, do your homework. Unfortunately, there are fraudsters who prey on distressed homeowners. Any company or individual offering to help you for a fee is a red flag. Homeownership can be complicated, particularly when you’re facing financial hardship. But expert help, available at little or no cost, can help you navigate rough financial water

HOW TO IMPROVE THE FUNCTIONALITY and CHARM OF YOUR HOME WITH WINDOWS

New windows can increase curb appeal, providing the finishing touch on an exterior home improvement project. They can also reduce energy bills, provide ventilation and impact your view, making it important to choose your products and placement carefully. Here’s what to know:

PERFORMANCE

As we head into the coolest months of the year, it’s important to remember that windows are a point of heat transfer. For optimal energy efficiency this winter and beyond, work with a manufacturer that offers ENERGY STAR-certified windows and insulated glass options. Likewise, investigate ratings for weatherability, durability and color retention. That’s where materials can come into play. Products made from vinyl have these common qualities: strength, durability, and abrasion-, moisture-, rustand corrosion-resistance. They are also electrically non-conductive and have excellent fire performance properties.

STYLE

Double hung and sliding windows are some of the most common window types nationwide. If you’re looking for a change, here are some other types to consider:

• ARCHITECTURAL WINDOWS: Custom window shapes, typically called architectural windows, come in a variety of profiles and sizes. Whether you’re partial to arch windows, octagonal windows or something else, custom window shapes can be used alone as a single focal point or in combination with other windows to create a show-stopping view. Online resources, such as ProVia’s window shape guide, found at provia.com/windows/shapes, can help you select shapes to complement your home’s architecture.

• BAY AND BOW WINDOWS: Most often seen on Victorian and classic/colonial style homes, bay and bow windows are a beautiful way to draw attention to your home’s exterior, while inside, providing a cozy place to sit and read or just enjoy the view. Constructed of double hung,

casement or picture windows set sideby-side at varying angles, bay and bow windows can be customized to include stained glass, tinted glass and other decorative options to further amp up curb appeal.

• HOPPER WINDOWS: Do you have spaces that could use a bit of sunlight and ventilation, but are areas where you don’t necessarily need people looking back in? Such rooms – think basements and bathrooms – are great places to install hopper windows, which are single-sash windows that open inward from the top. Doing so can improve home value by adding light to rooms that otherwise might be very dark. And in the laundry room, a hopper window can be used as the exterior outlet for dryer vents when mulled to a small, insulated picture window or other window type.

• GARDEN WINDOWS: While most often associated with Victorian-style architecture, garden windows can be added to any style home. The three-dimensional design helps open up a room while providing an eye-catching boost of curb appeal. A long-standing favorite in kitchens behind the sink, garden windows are ideal for bringing in extra light and providing a space to grow small plants or herbs. They can also be used in a bathroom or den as an alcove for decorative accents. When adding garden windows, consider turning to a manufacturer that provides the option to include adjustable shelves. This will help you maximize the space best.

Need some inspiration? Use ProVia’s Window Configurator tool in its online design center, found at provia.com/ design-center/envision, to try different window styles, grid options, colors and glass designs to create the perfect look for your home.

Windows are more customizable than you may realize, with many aesthetic and performance factors to consider. Before making this home upgrade, do some research to ensure your selections improve the charm and functionality of your home.

With aromatic ingredients like lemongrass, makrut lime leaves, and curry powder, this flavorful étouffée is best served over hot rice, garnished with lime wedges and cilantro. Starting with fresh shrimp and using coconut oil in the roux are key steps in achieving the dish’s deliciousness.

TIngredients

4 pounds large shrimp, peeled and deveined (shells reserved for stock)

10 cups water

½ cup refined coconut oil or 4 ounces unsalted butter

¾ cup all-purpose flour

1 yellow onion, diced (about 2 ½ cups)

1 red bell pepper, diced (about ¾ cup)

3 large celery stalks, diced (about ½ cup)

1 stalk lemongrass, minced (about cup)

5 tablespoons curry powder (e.g., Pyramid brand Madras curry powder)

1 tablespoon kosher salt (e.g., Diamond Crystal)

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon paprika

3 tablespoons tomato paste

6 Makrut lime leaves

2 cans (14 ½ ounces each) diced fire-roasted tomatoes

1 cup coconut milk, well-shaken and stirred

2 to 3 tablespoons fish sauce, to taste

2 to 3 tablespoons Sriracha chili sauce, to taste

3 to 4 cups cooked long-grain white rice

2 limes, cut into wedges

Chopped fresh cilantro

Directions

1. In a large pot, bring shrimp shells and water to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer uncovered for 30 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, melt coconut oil in a large Dutch oven over medium heat. Add flour and whisk constantly until the mixture turns a chocolate-brown color, about 20 to 25 minutes.

3. Stir in diced onion, bell pepper, celery, and lemongrass. Cook occasionally stirring until onion softens, about three minutes. Sprinkle with curry powder, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika. Stir in tomato paste and cook until it darkens in color, about 1 minute.

4. Strain shrimp stock into the Dutch oven, adding two cups initially and then adding the remaining stock gradually. Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat. Stir in Makrut lime leaves, diced fire-roasted tomatoes, and coconut milk. Return to a simmer, stirring occasionally. Adjust the flavor with fish sauce and Sriracha.

5. Add shrimp to the mixture and cook for about three minutes. Turn off the heat.

6. Serve the étouffée over rice, squeeze lime juice on top, and garnish with cilantro.
