Navigating Wealth Challenges: A Guide for Those with $100M “We attract people that want to be intentional,” Cole said. “Our goal ultimately is to curate 1,000 people cross the planet — 500 in the United States, 500 internationally — that believe wealth is more than money, that want to make a positive impact on their family and a positive impact on society.” Despite a global pool of over 28,000 “centi-millionaires” and nearly 11,000 in the U.S., R360 opts for a more intimate membership size. Michael Cole, R360 managing partner and head of its Texas chapter, emphasizes the importance of shared values. The goal is to curate a community of 1,000 individuals worldwide — 500 in the United States and 500 internationally — who view wealth as more than monetary and strive for positive impacts on both their families and society. R360 introduces a unique perspective by positing six forms of capital: financial, intellectual, social, human, emotional, and spiritual. Members deliberate on each at daylong meetings held five times a year in diverse locations. The group considers wealth not just as money but as a multifaceted asset that can contribute to various aspects of life. Beyond wealth, R360 recognizes the importance of legacy. In addition to candid conversations, members have the opportunity to collaborate with filmmakers on personal documentaries, offering a private autobiographical narrative for future generations.

Most R360 members are entrepreneurs, often “first-generation” highnet-worth individuals who achieved financial success as a byproduct of their business prowess. For these individuals, transitioning from wealth consumer to wealth steward requires careful consideration of the impact they wish to make. Success, as Michael Cole articulates, is not solely determined by financial wealth. R360 emphasizes the contextual richness of wealth, recognizing that focusing solely on financial wealth often leads to failure. The group’s approach aligns with the notion that success encompasses more than just monetary achievements; it necessitates a broader understanding of the impact and context of wealth. “People that have created this level of wealth can be very isolated, and so it’s hard for them to be completely open,” Cole said. “I consider it a successful (R360) meeting when somebody ends up in tears.” For these successful individuals, navigating the challenges unique to their circumstances can be isolating. R360 seeks to provide a supportive environment where members can openly share their experiences, even if it leads to a meeting ending in tears — a testament to the depth of connection fostered by the group.

Radio Icon Donnie Simpson Takes Final Bow After

55 YEARS IN BROADCASTING By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire

n icon, trailblazer, and media legend, Donnie Simpson held a commanding presence in Washington, D.C. If you know then you know. For a select group of 70s, 80s, and 90s babies, Simpson was the smooth voice and face of BET’s hit show, “Video Soul.” The legendary radio and media personality signed off, possibly for the last time, on Friday, January 12. The illustrious career that spanned an incredible 55 years ended with a heartfelt message from the iconic DJ himself. “Today’s the day,” Simpson posted on X. “Please make sure you tune into my last day … Let’s celebrate together as I thank each & every one of you for your support during my 55 years in radio.” Simpson gained international fame as a television and movie personality. From his early beginnings in Detroit to his stints at WKYS and WMMJ in Washington, he etched his name in the history of radio. A true industry pioneer, Simpson was one of America’s first video jockeys, hosting iconic shows like BET’s “Video Soul.” His achievements reached new heights when, in 1988, Billboard Magazine recognized him as both the best top radio personality and top program director in the nation. After retiring in 2010, Simpson triumphantly returned to the airwaves and television screens in 2015. As the afternoon drive host on WMMJ, Majic 102.3 in Washington D.C., and the face of TV-One’s “Donnie After Dark,” he continued to captivate audiences with his signature style. As noted in his bio, Simpson started in Detroit as the “Love Bug.” Simpson’s passion for music, nurtured in his mother’s record shop, laid the groundwork for an extraordinary career. He connected with the biggest stars globally throughout the years, showcasing his talent and versatility. Simpson’s television career soared as he anchored sports and hosted “Video Soul” on BET. In 2021, he announced the revival of “Video Soul.” Honored with inductions into the BET Walk of Fame (2004) and the R&B Hall of Fame of Class of 2020, Simpson’s legacy is cemented in the annals of entertainment history. “I’m going to miss doing the show, Donnie’s going to miss it, too, but he’s got some great things planned,” wrote News4 anchor Tony Perkins, who joined “The Donnie Simpson Show” in the 3 p.m. slot six years ago. “We loved doing the show. Thank you for all the responses on social media.”

EMPOWERING THE BLACK PRESS: A SHIFT FROM DISTRUST

By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire

he media has always been a vital pillar of democracy because it informs citizens, holds governments at all levels accountable, and provides a platform for diverse opinions and commentary. Despite its importance, journalism has struggled to remain relevant and credible in the age of political polarization and distrust in traditional outlets and newer technologies. Mainstream media produces and disseminates news through various outlets, such as television, radio, and newspapers. These outlets, which include CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox, and predominately white-owned publications like the New York Times, Washington Post, and others, also have websites, podcasts, social media, and aggregators. All of whom have collectively failed to report news favorable or meaningful to the 47 million descendants of Africans who call America home. A recent Pew Research Center survey found that Black Americans are more critical of the media than any other group. Most respondents said the media doesn’t adequately cover issues pertinent to Black America and that coverage of Black communities is often negative or biased. The death of George Floyd under a Minneapolis police officer’s knee outraged millions and set off protests that brought many Black people into the streets in ways they never had before. As violence, property damage, and efforts to reconcile and reform the police force ebbed and flowed, Black leaders in communities across the country pressed for change and pushed the media to do more to report on and analyze what was unfolding. Some in the industry responded to the outrage and calls for change by promising to diversify their staff and hire more journalists of color. They also pledged to shed light on the countless positive stories emanating regularly from Black neighborhoods. But experts say those pledges have been hard to keep, and the progress has either proven slow or nonexistent. A recent study revealed that four in five African

T

Americans mistrust mainstream media, a large but understandable percentage, particularly given how news coverage has resorted to its pre-George Floyd perceptions. The falsifications and broken promises of mainstream media serve as a reminder that the Black Press is still the only news source that African Americans can trust. On March 16, 1827, in New York City, John B. Russwurm and Samuel Cornish founded Freedoms Journal, the first newspaper owned by, led by, and for Black Americans in the United States. From the beginning, the goal of the Black Press was to provide a voice for African Americans while idealistically uplifting and validating them. By addressing topics such as women, youth, style, and social mobility, the Black Press sought to create a distinct identity among its readers. Black-owned newspapers of the time also played a critical role in the community by reporting on lynchings and providing an outlet for dissenting voices. The Black Press also helped to ignite such epochal movements as the Harlem Renaissance and Black Power, and it played a central role in the later struggle for civil rights. “It’s too bad we are still talking about these issues. But our leaders and Black people are speaking louder,” Ann Breedlove, who marched on Washington more than 60 years ago with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and again to observe its anniversary in 2023, told NBC News during the most recent march. “We’re tired — sick and tired — of asking for justice. It’s time to fight back. I’m a great-grandmother who remembers the Ku Klux Klan raiding our house and us having to get under the bed when they came on their horses. Today is different. That’s not happening. But we still are getting it in different ways.” Source: NNPA Newswire

4 POWERFUL TIPS to Thrive in the World of Online High School By d-mars.com News Provider

nline learning has been around for a while, but, since the pandemic, more and more families have shifted to this educational model. The flexibility that online learning provides for busy families is appealing to many, but it isn’t a fit for all students. “People were aware of online learning before, but the pandemic forced many to embrace it,” said Dr. Rafe Mazzeo, Ph.D., a professor of mathematics at Stanford University. “A lesson I learned during that time is that, not only do the teachers have to be very well prepared to teach online, but the students have to buy into the idea of learning online too.” When middle and high schoolers are invested in their education, an online program can give them opportunities they may not otherwise be able to access in a traditional brick-and-mortar school, and allow them to thrive in ways in-person learning falls short. If you and your child are considering switching to an online program, it’s important to know what’s needed to succeed. Stanford Online High School, founded in 2006, has been teaching students virtually for almost two decades, and understands online education’s unique benefits and challenges. Here are the school’s four essential tips for students to make the most of their online learning experience.

O

1. ESTABLISH A ROUTINE

One of the enticing aspects of online high schools is flexibility. Online schooling programs with synchronous (or real-time) classes offer a more flexible schedule than traditional in-person schooling. However, if your student struggles without structure, online school may not be the best learning environment. Help your child succeed by working with them to

establish a daily routine that balances class time, study sessions, extracurricular activities, socializing, and downtime. Creating and sticking to a consistent routine will help your middle or high schoolers better manage their time, stay organized, decrease stress, and reduce their risk of falling behind. 2. CREATE A DEDICATED LEARNING WORKSTATION Just because students can take class from their bed, couch, dining room table, or kitchen counter doesn’t mean that they should. Having a dedicated learning space in your home that is used only for attending online classes and studying is essential to thrive in an online educational program. Collaborate with your student to create a comfortable workstation that is free of distractions and has the necessary supplies to do their work. Establishing a study space will help your student get into a focused mindset so they can excel in their classes. 3. STAY ORGANIZED

In-person and online learning both require your student to practice excellent organizational skills to succeed. Staying organized can also curb procrastination and reduce stress. Whether your middle or high schooler prefers digital tools, paper planners, or a combination of both, ensure they have the necessary materials and apps to set them up for success. Help them choose calendars, notebooks, or digital platforms that can help them take notes and keep track of class schedules, assignments, and due dates. 4. ACTIVELY ENGAGE IN CLASS It’s not enough to simply attend online classes. It is crucial that your student is actively participating in class. Active engagement enhances your student’s understanding of the material and can help them feel more connected to their

school’s community while in a virtual environment. Encourage your student to make the most of their time in class and take advantage of opportunities to meet with their teachers. If they are confused with a topic or need extra support, encourage them to reach out to their teachers for guidance. Joining a worldwide educational community

In addition to students and parents investing time and discipline, it is important to find an online educational program built to give your student the best experience possible. When searching for an online school, consider Stanford Online High School, the leader in online education since 2006. At Stanford Online High School, students in grades 7-12 learn the essential skills to become global citizens and make lasting connections with other students around the world. Following a traditional August-June academic year, students may attend full-time and seek a high school diploma, or enroll in just one or two courses. The coursework challenges students at every level, as they learn from instructors with expertise in their fields of teaching. Students engage with their instructors and peers in synchronous class sessions, and participate in over 100 clubs, local meetups with classmates, and other school activities. To learn more and take an online tour, visit ohs.Stanford.edu/ Take-Tour.

DID YOU KNOW?

The Federal Reserve reports that the average net worth of a Black family is less than 15% of that of a white family in 2020, highlighting a significant racial wealth gap. Salka suggests that this gap could be addressed if more Black individuals invest in life insurance. The study reveals that Black Americans tend to associate life insurance primarily with burial and final expenses, potentially leading to insufficient coverage for income replacement or facilitating wealth transfer, essential aspects of life insurance benefits for loved ones after the death of a wage earner. Davis said that to succeed in this challenging environment, he understood that it requires more than just knowledge— it also requires a great level of wisdom. it was the hardship of experience that forged me into the leader I am today,” Davis said. With all the information he gained and the experiences he had, Davis embarked on a notable journey, founding Jerrold Construction with a special mission: to conquer obstacles, surpass everyone’s hopes, and make a significant mark in his legacy. Every day, Davis and his team persistently push ahead, living up to the company’s motto— to provide a superior quality of work and results. Throughout the years, Davis has grown to be an expert in remodeling, renovations, and design-build. His company is known for its precise workmanship, using only the best materials, and following strict safety protocols to make sure customers are satisfied. Keith J. Davis, Jr. | CEO building, Jerrold Construction can handle any project. They are committed to delivering excellence, regardless of the size or complexity of the job. The establishment’s story is filled with both victories and challenges, as the team strives for greatness in a world that is constantly evolving. However, amidst all the changes, one thing remains constant: Davis and his company are regarded as role models, leaving a lasting impact on the construction industry. Traditionally, people think of “legacy” as the inheritance of material possessions and wealth that are passed down to future generations. However, there are other perspectives that expand this definition to include the richness of a person’s life, such as their achievements and the profound influence they have on others and their environment. “Personally, I view ‘legacy’ as a harmonious blend of both aspects: the financial inheritance bestowed upon descendants and the enduring impact made on the lives of those around us. While leaving behind financial stability is undeniably valuable, the knowledge that one has positively transformed the lives of others holds even greater significance,” Davis said.

For those who hunger for wisdom, who strive for excellence, and who dare to chase their wildest dreams, Jerrold Construction beckons. The company’s existence is a testament to the unwavering power of determination and the timeless significance of excellence, not just for today but for future generations as well. “Secure the bag, for it holds not just wealth, but the key to unlocking a future of abundance and fulfillment,” the young founder detailed. Davis and the Jerrold Construction team are actively looking for new talent. Once you step inside, you’ll be blown away by the company’s impressive scale. At Jerrold Construction, striving for excellence is not just a goal, it’s a part of their daily routine. Jerrold Construction’s commitment to delivering outstanding results sets them apart in the construction industry, making them a highly sought-after partner for clients who seek exceptional outcomes. By closely collaborating with clients, they ensure that every project surpasses expectations. For any inquiries, contact 713-742-6700.

Romance Scams on the Rise and Elderly are Particularly Vulnerable By d-mars.com News Provider

hey say, “you can’t buy love,” but scammers have figured out a way to exploit it for profit. Romance scams are at an all-time high and, while victims cross all demographics, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reports that elders are increasingly targeted. Why? Because they often have retirement savings at their disposal and maybe more isolated and less tech savvy. “Romance scammers often manipulate emotions to gain trust,” says Mark Kwapiszeski, head of enterprise fraud for PNC. “Those who fall victim end up putting feelings above logic. This can create embarrassment and, as a result, these crimes are less likely to be reported.” Scammers will create convincing

T

profiles on dating and social media apps, reaching out to their target feigning familiarity or attraction. Things move quickly, but there is always a reason they can’t meet on video or in person. They may claim to have a reason that requires them to be overseas or out of reach. They tell their target everything they want to hear, and the hook is set. Suddenly, a crisis arises that they insist they need financial help to mitigate. Or maybe they need finances to set up a new life together. They ask for the money but would prefer it be sent in a form like cryptocurrency or gift card, where there is little chance of the victim ever recovering it. Such scams are highly effective. In 2022 alone, romance scams resulted in $1.3 billion lost, more than double the money lost in the previous year, according to the FTC.

To add insult to injury, scammers may convince their target to send them revealing photos they will later use to extort them. They may even play the long game and build trust over time, then convince their target to invest with them, without the victim ever getting any return. “A romance scammer can invest a long time in cultivating trust, which makes these scams particularly nefarious,” Kwapiszeski says. Elders have lost homes, emptied out retirement accounts and risked lifetime savings for a love interest that never truly existed. Once the shock abates and the money is gone, the shame sets in and some have even resorted to selfharm instead of admitting to being defrauded in this way. If a loved one falls victim to a romance scam, it’s important to respond with empathy. If you believe you or someone you love has been a victim of fraud, PNC Bank’s web resources, as part of its Security and Privacy Center (pnc.com), can help. After taking immediate measures to protect yourself, block the scammer on all accounts, change your passwords, and report the incident to the FTC and FBI. The best line of defense against romance scams is awareness. Understanding common tactics can help you stay protected.

survey by Delish uncovered that 28 percent of Americans don’t know how to fry chicken, let alone well. Check out our recipe to simplify your taste buds for buttermilk fried chicken and practice getting on your a-game. If you’re a fan of succulent, flavorful chicken with a crispy golden coating, look no further than this recipe. The secret lies in the magical alchemy of buttermilk, infusing the meat with tenderness and a delightful tang. Gather your ingredients and embark on a culinary journey that will elevate your fried chicken game to new heights.

A

INGREDIENTS

2 pounds of chicken pieces (drumsticks, thighs, or a mix) 2 cups buttermilk 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon paprika 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon onion powder Salt and pepper to taste Vegetable oil for frying

1. MARINATION MAGIC: - Place the chicken pieces in a bowl and generously season with salt and pepper. - Pour buttermilk over the chicken, ensuring each piece is fully coated. - Cover the bowl and let it marinate in the refrigerator for at least four hours, or preferably overnight. This step imparts tenderness and flavor to the chicken. 2. FLOUR POWER: - In a separate bowl, mix the flour, paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder. - Retrieve the marinated chicken from the refrigerator and let it come to room temperature. - Dredge each piece in the seasoned flour mixture, ensuring an even coating. Shake off any excess flour. 3. CRISPY CREATION: - Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or a large, deep skillet to 350°F (175°C). - Carefully place the coated chicken pieces into the hot oil, a few at a time, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. - Fry until the chicken reaches a golden-brown perfection, turning occasionally to ensure even cooking. This usually takes about 12-15 minutes, depending on the size of the chicken pieces.

4. DRAIN AND ENJOY: - Once the chicken achieves a crispy exterior and a juicy interior, remove it from the oil and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. - Sprinkle with an extra pinch of salt while still hot for an added burst of flavor. 5. SERVE AND INDULGE: - Arrange your golden-brown buttermilk chicken on a platter and watch as it disappears within moments. - Pair it with your favorite dipping sauces, a side of coleslaw, or some mashed potatoes for a meal that’s nothing short of a culinary triumph.

This recipe promises a symphony of flavors and textures—crispy on the outside, tender on the inside. Whether it’s a casual family dinner or a gathering with friends, this dish is sure to make you the hero of any culinary occasion. Enjoy the delight of homemade buttermilk fried chicken that’s comfort food at its crispy best!

Enhancing Your Company’s Payroll Processes with

Cutting-edge TECHNOLOGY By d-mars.com News Provider

enerative AI is in the news nearly every day, and currently the most talked about topic in the world of technology. According to Forbes, well over half (64%) of business owners think AI will help benefit relationships with their customers. If you run a small to mid-sized business, you may be wondering how the latest groundbreaking developments in AI technology could help you better manage your company. One area you may not have considered is your payroll system. While you may know how time-consuming certain payroll tasks can be, it may not be clear to you how AI - specifically generative AI - could streamline these processes. Using AI could actually save time and money while improving the experience both for you or your staff who manage payroll, and the employees who rely on it.

G

WHAT IS GENERATIVE AI?

This widely used subset of AI uses algorithms to produce new content, data or outputs autonomously, and can be “taught” how to automate a variety of complex systems. Generative AI is “trained” by being exposed to large datasets of existing examples. The AI model then analyzes data to identify patterns, correlations and structures. Once trained, generative AI uses these patterns to create original content while maintaining consistency with what it learned. Common generative AI examples include writing assistance, chatbots/online agents - and payroll processing. AI-powered chat-based assistants are one versatile tool that can engage with customers and streamline interactions. GenAI-powered chatbots can comprehend and respond to customer questions in natural language, offering real-time support and assistance while freeing up human resources for more complex tasks. But chatbots can do much more than just answer simple customer questions. Generative AI chatbots

can also streamline vital HR and administrative duties such as a company’s payroll and taxes.
