Fury over arrest of police officers Three released last night after chasing a car into the buffer zone on Sunday By Jacqueline Agathocleous

T

HE THREE Greek Cypriot police officers who were detained by Turkish troops on Sunday morning after crossing into the buffer zone while chasing a Turkish Cypriot vehicle whose driver failed to stop for a check, were yesterday fined by two socalled courts in the north and released. In a case that has caused outrage in the Republic, the three arrived at the Ledra Palace checkpoint in Nicosia last night after having paid thousands of euros in fines. The United Nations (UN) were strongly criticised in the local media for failing to intervene in the incident, though it yesterday became clear that there were differing views on the actual location where the three were apprehended. The local police announced that its officers had been pursuing a Turkish Cypriot car through the Nicosia village of Dhali when it sped into the buffer zone, with the officers - two in a car and one on a motorbike - following suit. “They were then illegally arrested by soldiers of the occupying forces and led to the illegal police station of Louroudjina,” said the police. However, UNFICYP spokesman Michel Bonnardeaux said yesterday the officers had admitted during their appearance in northern Cyprus’ so-called military and civilian courts that they in fact pursued the car

all the way into the occupied village of Louroudjina, without realising. “The facts that they related in court are similar to those that they related to us, UNFICYP, on Sunday night after the arrests, that they didn’t realise that they ended up in the north but at some point they did realise they were in the north and not the buffer zone,” said Bonnardeaux. “What they told us on Sunday night is exactly what they said in court today.” The officers were fined 10,000 Turkish Lira (around €4,350) each in the ‘military court’, while two of them were fined 6,000 Turkish Lira (around €2,608) in the civilian for unauthorised entry into the occupied areas and for carrying weapons; the third officer was fined 5,000 Turkish Lira (around €2,175) as he wasn’t carrying a gun. Some light is expected to be shed on the case after the officers inform the local force on what happened today. “As an investigation into the matter is underway, we are waiting for our members to give us their positions on the conditions of the pursuit and the incident as a whole, in written statements,” said police spokesman Andreas Angelides last night. It was last night not clear if the force’s car, motorbike and weapons - which were confiscated by the occupying forces - would be returned. The incident happened at 11.30am on Sunday. The officers had been chasing

Oregon farmer apparently eaten by his own pigs A FARMER in the US has apparently been eaten by his pigs. Terry Garner, 70, never returned after he set out to feed his animals on his farm near the Oregon coast. A family member later found his dentures and pieces of his body in the pig enclosure, but most of his remains had been consumed. The district attorney’s office said it was possible Garner had a medical emergency, such as a heart attack, or was knocked over by the animals

before he was killed. But criminal activity has not been ruled out. Authorities estimate the pigs weigh around 50 stones each. One had either bitten or been aggressive with Garner previously. A pathologist was unable to identify a cause or manner of death. The remains will be examined by a forensic anthropologist. Terry Garner was “a good-hearted guy” who cared for several huge adult sows and a boar named Teddy, said

his brother, Michael Garner, 75. “Those animals were his life,” Garner said. “He had all kinds of birds, and turkeys that ran all over the place. Everybody knew him.” Domestic pigs are not typically known to be as aggressive as their feral cousins, but “there is some degree of danger associated with any animal,” John Killefer, who heads the Animal and Rangeland Sciences Department at Oregon State University said.

Matsakis leads protest to close crossing point OUTSPOKEN former MEP Marios Matsakis led a small group of protestors in blocking the Ayios Dhometios checkpoint yesterday, protesting at the arrest of three Greek Cypriot police officers by authorities in the north on Sunday, after they crossed into the buffer zone during a car chase. “We blocked the crossing point in protest, and tomorrow [today] we will be there again demanding the officers be given their [guns] and money that was stolen off them, because we’re talking about theft,” Matsakis said referring to the fines the police officers paid the ‘TRNC’ authorities. A few dozen of protestors carrying

Greek, Cypriot and EU flags rallied behind Matsakis – who has a history of fiery demonstrations – to the Ayios Dhometios crossing point yesterday. Also present were members of far right party, ELAM. Matsakis set fire to the Turkish flag in July last year in response to what he understood as “threats against Cyprus” by Turkish prime minister Tayyip Erdogan, and has been arrested by both the British and Turkish Cypriot authorities during separate protests over the years. At about 2pm yesterday, Matsakis and protesters walked to Ayios Dhometios crossing point and lodged themselves between the two check points, effec-

tively blocking cars from crossing and preventing a bus carrying tourists from Germany getting to the north. UN peacekeeping officers present told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) that the ‘TRNC’ authorities had also blocked access, pending the protest’s conclusion. Police eventually encircled and moved away the protesters, some of whom responded by shouting “we’re here for your colleagues”. “This thing with the crossing points can’t go on anymore,” Matsakis said. “Cross points are a portal through which enter guns, drugs and which criminals and gamblers cross,” Matsakis said.

Lillikas seeks to close checkpoints to north ‘Political message’ needs to be sent in wake of arrests By Jacqueline Agathocleous INDEPENDENT presidential candidate Giorgos Lillikas’ yesterday proposed temporarily closing all checkpoints in order to send a “political message” after three policemen were arrested by the occupying forces in the north. “The state has a duty to defend the Republic of Cyprus’ sovereignty and react with determination against the continuous provocations by the occupying authorities,” said Lillikas. “Until today, they abducted or illegally arrested mainly citizens, using various excuses. Now for the first time, they have extended their illegal actions and abducted members of the Cypriot state’s law enforcement.” He said the Republic’s response to simply rely on the UN to intervene was clearly not enough. “I feel the government should show determination and has a duty to protect the citizens of the

Republic of Cyprus by temporarily closing the checkpoints,” said Lillikas. In the past nine years since they opened, he added, the public has scarcely seen any benefits, nor has it helped towards finding a solution to the Cyprus problem. “On the contrary, the only people who really collaborate via the checkpoints are the two communities’ underworlds,” said Lillikas. “Munitions, drugs, murderers and other criminal elements are illegally transported to the free areas.” In addition, he said there was the mass movement of illegal immigrants from the occupied areas. “Statistics show that there is no longer mass movement of our refugees, who wanted to see or show their children and grandchildren their occupied homes and properties, from the free areas to the occupied areas. These numbers have reduced dramatically,” said Lillikas. “Unfortunately, the vast majority of those

who visit the occupied areas either go to eat cheap fish or to visit the casinos. This certainly does not contribute to rapprochement or a solution to the Cypriot problem.” So he said temporarily closing them would not harm the Republic in any way. “It will bring the Turkish Cypriots’ leadership face to face with its responsibilities.” He said such a move “primarily aims to send a political message”. However, ruling AKEL’s presidential candidate, Stavros Malas, said yesterday he was against cutting off communication between the two communities, saying the state needed to “react reasonably”. Asked to comment on Lillikas’ proposal, Malas reminded reporters that it was the former Turkish Cypriot leader - Rauf Denktash - who proposed the checkpoints’ opening, with the reasoning that this would prove that Greek and

Turkish Cypriots could not co-exist. He said the fact that Turkish Cypriots were moving freely and without problems in the free areas proved Denktash wrong. “The two communities can peacefully co-exist and this is not something we aim to stop,” said Malas. “Based on the specific incident, what would closing the Republic of Cyprus’ checkpoints resolve?” he asked. Lillikas’ proposal did garner some support, from the Green Party. “History has taught us that a determined reaction is the best pharmaceutical for provocation,” the party announced. “Taking into account the United Nations’ passive reaction – two days after the incident they have not yet condemned the intervention of the Attila’s military forces in the buffer zone – there is no other reaction than to temporarily close the checkpoints until the three policemen are released.”

Outrage after the arrest of three policemen in north Occupying forces accused of promoting mistrust between two communities continued from page one a Turkish Cypriot vehicle whose driver refused to stop for a check on Yiannis Groutas Avenue in Dhali. Instead, the driver sped off towards the Turkish-occupied areas. Reports said the driver of the vehicle was also arrested. The officers - Antonis Antoniou, Savvas Savva and Christodoulos Christodoulou - were first led to the so-called military court yesterday afternoon and then the civilian court, before news emerged that they would be released. Main opposition DISY described the events as a “provocation and violation of all principles”. It said the occupying forces were protecting crime and promoting mistrust between the two communities.

INACTION DISY also said it was saddened by the UN’s “inaction” and called on the government to report the north’s behaviour to the UN Secretary General and the EU. Opposition EDEK’s spokesman Demetris Papadakis referred to a “gangster-like abduction”, which he said was “just another action by the occupying forces aimed at showcasing the pseudo state’s socalled sovereignty in the occupied parts of the Republic of Cyprus”. EVROKO’s Polys Palikaros said the incident “highlights Turkey and the occupying regime as protectors of drug traffickers”, adding that this posed a threat to the EU as well as Cyprus. DISY MEP Eleni Theocharous sent a letter to the president of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, condemning the policemen’s arrest and calling on EU officials to urge Turkey to release them. She said the occupying

Members of the police at the Ayios Dhometios checkpoint yesterday, which was blocked temporarily after three policemen were seized after crossing the buffer zone on Sunday forces’ “predatory action” was illegal and provocative, and an insult not just to Cyprus, but to the EU, as Cyprus now has the EU presidency. The Cyprus Police Association blamed the UN, saying it had neglected its duties and “indirectly assisted” the occupying force. “As it is well known, the buffer zone is exclusively controlled by the United Nations, which had a duty to intervene and protect the policemen,” it announced. “Therefore, we are calling on the political leadership and relevant UN officials to intervene effectively for our members’ immediate release and the return of the

vehicles, as well as the rest of the equipment they had with them.” The head of the association, Andreas Symeou, said he had been informed that the UN “contributed and indirectly assisted the illegal policemen to arrest our three colleagues, because their service vehicles were within the buffer zone, then were found at the illegal police station shortly after”. Symeou said the state had a duty to report the UN’s behaviour to its Secretary General. He announced that the association would be taking on any fines imposed on the policemen, as a show of solidarity.

However, UNFICYP spokesman Bonnardeaux yesterday told the Cyprus Mail that the UN had received no warning from the police that they would be entering the buffer zone, as is the customary procedure. “We don’t want to prejudge the facts,” he said. “But from our point of view, when the Cypriot police want to intervene in the buffer zone they have to warn us that they are doing so, because we would escort them into the buffer zone. This did not happen. We were not present during the events.” Bonnardeaux said that even though the UN pa-

trols the buffer zone areas, it is not stationary and cannot be present everywhere, which was why he said they missed the events. “So we do not have a definitive picture. But we certainly never handed over any vehicles to the north,” he said. “What we did do was go to see the detainees on Sunday night, we made sure they were treated humanely and had access to families, if only by phone, as we would for any Cypriot who is detained by the other side.” Bonnardeaux added that the UN “certainly made representations to the north on behalf of the south and conveyed the messages”.

Crisis leading to more depression THE debt crisis makes us all more vulnerable to depression, the head of mental health services Yiannis Kalakoutas and health minister, Stavros Malas said yesterday in a joint news conference. The top health officials held a news conference in anticipation of world mental health day on October 10, which this year has the theme of Depression: A Global Crisis. About 250 million people around the world suffer from depression, Malas said. Depression is “the most common mental disturbance and the data provided by the World Health Organisation is worrisome,” Malas said. If not checked, by 2030 depression will debilitate the work force more than any other cause since other physical diseases have started falling, Malas said. “Depression can afflict anyone from any community and from across social standings, and my in some cases lead to suicide,” he said. Less than 50 per cent of sufferers will seek medication, partly because of a stigma attached to the disease, Malas said. Kalakoutas said that schools and parents can play a positive role in young person’s lives, equipping them with tools to live healthily in the future.

Assault alleged BRITON Paul Hunt, 57, told police yesterday that Nicolas Fournaris, 60, stopped him on the road in the Larnaca village of Vavla and attacked him with a crowbar, police said. Hunt said a little before 5pm Fournaris assaulted him and damaged his car. Police are investigating assault, causing grievous bodily harm and destruction of property. The two men know each other, police said but could not yesterday elaborate on any motive behind the assault.

Home Exhumed Briton died of ‘natural causes’

President Christofias in Athens with Greek prime minister Antonis Samaras yesterday

THE family of a 60-year-old Briton, whose remains were exhumed after his relatives suspected foul play, were told the deceased died of natural causes, reports said yesterday. The decision to exhume Haydon Louis Archer’s remains on Monday was made after his family members suggested a bar fight, only days prior to his admittance to a private clinic for liver failure related to alcoholism, could have been linked to his death. But two state pathologists said the bar incident was unrelated to the British national’s death and that he had died of pathological causes. Archer was buried at a Catholic cemetery in the Mesa Chorio community in the Paphos district about a

month ago, but soon after his relatives and friends became suspicious that a bar fight in which he’d been hit by three people had had something to do with his death and that it was not simply due to pathological causes, said local daily Phileleftheros. However state pathologists Sophoclis Sophocleous and Nicholas Charalambous, who carried out the autopsy at Paphos general hospital, both confirmed the 60-yearold’s death was unrelated to any crime. “We carried out the exhumation of a foreigner following a request by his relatives. His death was due to pathological causes and from the findings of the autopsy criminal activity has been ruled out,” said Sophocleous.

BUSINESSES lose around €700 million a year due to red tape, according to a survey by KPMG which was presented to the House commerce committee yesterday. “It was recorded today that the cost alone for businesses due to bureaucracy in the public service is around €700 million a year,” said committee chairman, DISY’s Lefteris Christoforou, after the meeting, “If this cost was saved - or even part of it - we would certainly have a healthier economy, healthier small and medium-sized enterprises and a smaller public sector, with higher efficiency.” Christoforou said it was time to abolish red tape, especially while the country

is negotiating with EU lenders the troika for a state bailout. Ruling AKEL’s Costas Costa said some measures were being implemented to deal with the problem, though he admitted these weren’t enough. “The amounts that were referred to at the committee today were very big,” he said. “The added cost from bureaucracy is estimated at 3.0 per cent of the GDP (gross domestic product).” Costa said representatives from KPMG, as well as the finance ministry and all related state departments, would be invited to the committees’ next meeting, to discuss the findings and find ways to implement suggestions proposed in KPMG’s survey.

Counter-proposals Millions lost to red tape to be finalised today Proposals to counter troika bailout plans to be given to parties By Elias Hazou THE government is today expected to finalise its counter-proposals on the terms of a bailout package so they can be discussed with political parties by week’s end. The Cabinet meets again tonight – it also convened on Monday – to put the final strokes to the proposals. On Friday, political leaders head out to the Presidential Palace for a first discussion of both the troika’s and the government’s proposals. The proposals will be sent to the parties ahead of time, tomorrow. Although the government has been tight-lipped about what it will propose to its international lenders, reports yesterday suggested Nicosia’s package was much ‘softer’ than the troika’s. The troika wants measures comprising savings and increased revenues worth around €1 billion over a three-year period, from 2012 to 2015. By contrast, the government is looking at between €700 and €800 million, and wants to extend the loan repayment period by a year. Meanwhile today, Finance Minister Vasos Shiarly will be briefing the parties on the government’s plans for the 2013 budget, the scope of which is affected by the bailout. The troika’s draft proposals, leaked to the press, recommended that the 2013 budget should include permanent cutbacks of €350m. Under the Constitution, the budget should have been submitted to parliament by the end of September.

The government has been looking for ways to raise revenue without cutting the 13th salary but reforming wage indexation, both of which the troika suggested scrapping altogether. Entrenched trade unions are resisting government efforts to reform wage indexation. The Ministry of Labour has proposed that CoLA (Cost of Living Allowance) be calculated on an annual basis and paid on January 1 each year; currently, CoLA is factored into wages every six months. In addition, in the event the 2nd and 3rd quarters in any given year recorded zero or negative growth in GDP, CoLA would not be paid for that year and the next. Unions are up in arms because the recession is expected to persist until at least the middle of next year, meaning that under the proposal employees would not receive CoLA for 2013 or 2014. According to media reports, and depending on the outlet, the government is looking to compensate for not abolishing CoLA or the 13th salary through tax hikes on property, on tobacco and alcohol, and VAT. The administration reportedly plans to raise some €300m through changes in property tax (real estate is still taxed based on 1980 prices), another €100m by increasing VAT from 17 to 18 per cent, €100m by reducing the size of the public sector, and graduated cutbacks to public-sector salaries yielding between €150m and €200m. Stefanou said, however, authorities are treading carefully when it comes to taxing real estate, given that the vast major-

ity of the population owns property. Asked when the troika is expected back here so that full-fledged negotiations for a bailout can begin, Stefanou said no date has yet been set. A major sticking point with the troika is the latter’s proposal for a redefinition of banks’ non-performing loans (NPLs), which if accepted would cause Cyprus’ bailout figure to soar. Many of these NPLs are traced to Cypriot banks’ operations in Greece. Nicosia is in talks with Athens on ways of “disengaging” the banks’ Greek operations from a bailout, Stefanou said, without going into detail. He said this issue was discussed yesterday at the meeting between President Christofias and Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras. The Finance Ministry’s permanent secretary Christos Patsalides yesterday told MPs that the government is looking into asking Russia for an extension on repaying the €2.5 billion loan it received in December last year. It was initially agreed that the loan would be repaid by mid2016, but the government now wants to extend this to 2020. Speaking to newsmen, Watchdog committee chairman Giorgos Georgiou (DISY) said the government’s financing needs until the end of the year would come to €3.7 billion. Deducting from this the €2.5 billion Russian loan, he said, would leave some €1.2 billion, out of which €800 million was refinanced through domestic borrowing, still leaving €400 million, which the current administration would “bequeath” to the next government.

Four fisherman released from north THE four fishermen, who were arrested by Turkish Cypriot ‘police’ last Wednesday fishing off Apostolos Andreas in the north, were released yesterday after each paying a 1,000 Turkish lira fine (approximately €435). The men – two Greek Cypriots and two Egyptian nationals - had been fishing off Apostolos Andreas in the Karpas peninsula when they were arrested. The boat’s owner, Socratis Phani, said that while the four were on the boat fishing, they were approached by two Turkish military boats, which ordered them to follow them to land. Phani informed the fisheries department through the boat’s radio. The department then contacted the foreign ministry, which then immediately informed police headquarters and the National Guard. The four were taken to court in the occupied areas on Thursday, where they were remanded until Monday. According to the Turkish Cypriot press yesterday, there were around 390kg of fish on the boat when they were arrested. It was reported the majority was destroyed, except a swordfish, which was sold on for 1,324 Turkish lira (€576) and deposited in the north’s coffers.

Sylikiotis accused of tricking House Opposition MPs say he speeded up creation of a state controlled hydrocarbons company By Elias Hazou OPPOSITION MPs yesterday accused Commerce Minister Neoclis Sylikiotis of pulling a fast one by stealthily expediting the establishment of a state-controlled hydrocarbons company. A scheduled discussion at the House commerce committee of an oppositiondrafted bill governing the hydrocarbons company was postponed after Sylikiotis, who had been asked to attend, did not show up. DISY’s Averof Neofytou, one of the bill’s authors, told fellow MPs he had it on good authority that, on the commerce minister’s instructions, the company’s listing on the registrar of companies was imminent - possibly today that is, before the passage of the law they are working on. Neofytou said moreover that, according to his sources, the government has already picked four persons as executive directors for the company, offering them “fat, five-year contracts”. Sylikiotis was yesterday scheduled to fly to Brussels for a European gas policy forum, although it’s understood that at the time the House committee was in session he

complete control of the entity and monopolise the administration of hydrocarbons for many years to come. Opposition MPs said yesterday they felt tricked, as there had been an understanding with the government that it would not press ahead with the hydrocarbons company before it deliberated with parliament. It’s not clear what, if anything, lawmakers can now do to stop the establishment and operation of the company once it has been registered. But speaking anonymously, one politician told the Mail parliament’s hands are far from tied: he said the House could refuse to approve the government funds earmarked for the contracts of the executive directors. In a bid to deprive the Christofias administration of controlling lucrative gas distribution contracts, parliament, with the exception of the ruling AKEL party, earlier this year decided to divide the job between the Public Company for Natural Gas (DEFA) and the Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA). DEFA will import, distribute and supply natural gas locally, while CERA will be in charge of exporting natural gas, in addition to its regulatory role.

was still on the island. Later in the day, the government denied any sleight of hand, with spokesman Stefanos Stefanou saying “no one has been hired, and no fat salaries have been paid”. The House committee was scheduled to continue discussing a legislative proposal which it hoped to submit to the plenum this week. The bill states that any hydrocarbons company must be established by law. Moreover, in a pre-emptive move designed to head off the government, it expressly forbids the establishment in the meantime of a public company governed by private law that deals with hydrocarbons and in which the state owns more than 50 per cent of the capital. The government’s intention is to set up a state-owned hydrocarbons company to handle all aspects of natural gas, including import, liquefaction, transport and export. Under the current legal framework, the company would be under the absolute control of the government with the legislature having no authority as it would be subject to company law. It would simply need to be listed on the registrar of companies. Opposition politicians fear that ruling AKEL would take

Home Over €37 million raised by charity drive FROM its inception until now the Radiomarathon charity has raised over €37 million First Lady Elsi Christofias, who chairs the committee’s charity, said yesterday. Speaking ahead of the 23rd radiomarathon, which gets under way on October 21, she said between October last year and the end of August a total of 2,436 applications for help were lodged, an increase from the previous corresponding period when 2,288 applications were filed. Most applications come from individuals, Christofias said while she added that they had rejected 329, about 100 more from the previous period. So far, 2,107 applications have been approved, although 754 more are pending, Christofias said. Radiomarathon started in 1990 and helps people with special needs, their families, and other foundations set up to help them. “These figures demonstrate the breadth of the needs covered through the voluntary contribution of thousands of people,” said the First Lady. She said that they tried to help people with special needs by helping them improve their standard of living, or contributing financially to rehabilitation treatments such as speech therapy. Christofias said they help pay for someone to accompany those who need to go abroad to receive medical attention,. “Humanity and fraternity characterise Cypriots wherever they are, in Cyprus or overseas,” Christofias said. In total the charity drive got almost €2.0 million in 2011 by donations, a decrease from 2010 when Radiomarathon got almost €2.4 million. A series of events have been scheduled throughout the month to support the charity, while the 23rd Radiomarathon charity drive is due to start October 21.

Three to stand trial for conspiracy to murder Two Greeks and one Albanian man arrested last month By Poly Pantelides FAMAGUSTA district court yesterday referred three men to the criminal court to stand trial charged with conspiracy to commit the murder of businessman Phanos Kalopsiditis. The trial will start on December 13. Doriani Veri, 29 from Albania, and Greek nationals Eleftherios Kartasakis, 44, and 33-year-old Giorgos Demetriou were arrested on September 9, on suspicion of being hired to kill Kalopsiditis who was present in court yesterday. Police found the three - after receiving word of three men acting suspiciously - with two loaded pistols in the car. Ballistic tests later proved that one of the pistols - a Glock - was the weapon used to gun down five men in Ayia Napa on June 23. Four of the dead were bodyguards of Kalopsiditis.

Authorities also found genetic material of one of the three men on the murder weapon from the June murders. Three Greek Cypriots and two Romanians were shot on a side street near the popular Red Square bar, in the heart of Ayia Napa’s nightclub scene. Standing trial this month in relation to that shooting are two other Greek nationals, Demetris Mamalikopoulos, 29, and Anastasios Tsehilides, both of whom were arrested in Greece on a European arrest warrant. Veri, Kartasakis and Demetriou will appear to court in December in relation to conspiracy to commit murder, and illegal possession and transportation of firearms. The firearms fall under category B1, which applies to certain kinds firearms for which a licence is only given if the applicant can justify his or her

choice. Demetriou said he was on the island on holiday, Kartasakis said he was on the island to “do a job”, but added he had not been given much information. Veri, who carried fake Greek identification, said that all three of them had come to carry out a big robbery but were contacted by a man in Cyprus telling them they instead would be murdering a local man who led them to the car with the guns, just an hour before police arrested them. Two Greek Cypriot men, aged 27 and 28, who were arrested in September in relation to the shooting, were yesterday released and may be asked to appear to court later, police said. Police arrested them in relation to investigations into the contract killers’ local link. The court decides today whether the three men will be held until the trial’s start.

TENDERS to build the new, overdue, Paphos-Polis Chrysochous road will be announced no later than the end of this year or the beginning of next, the interior minister has promised. The confirmation was made by Polis Chrysochous mayor Angelos Odysseos yesterday. Odysseos said interior minister Eleni Mavrou had committed to putting the project to tender before the end of 2012 and no later than the start of 2013. The process to partially amend aspects of the documentation involved, as well as the project’s technical characteristics, was already underway, he said, and would reduce construction costs.

Bus strike off AT THE eleventh hour the Transportation Organisation of Nicosia District (OSEL) yesterday called off their scheduled strike after its members were told they would be paid for September. OSEL chairman Iordanis Iordanou said the state had agreed to pay last month’s staff salaries which was why yesterday’s scheduled strike had been cancelled. The total owed was to be paid to OSEL yesterday.

Miliband in an appeal to one nation Britain

People are safer in their homes than a generation ago

Cameron loses right to claim ‘we are all in this together’

By Wesley Johnson

By Andrew Woodcock LABOUR leader Ed Miliband declared his ambition to “rebuild Britain as One Nation” yesterday, as he sought to place his party firmly in the political centre ground. The One Nation slogan was first used by Conservative prime minister Benjamin Disraeli in the 19th century and has long been linked with the political centreright, and Miliband made no bones about the fact that he was stealing it from the Tories. David Cameron has lost the right to call himself a One Nation Prime Minister or claim that “we are all in this together” because of the way he has governed and his decision to hand tax cuts to millionaires while cutting services and benefits for the poor, he said. Delivering his keynote speech without notes to Labour’s annual conference, Miliband explained how his upbringing as the child of Jewish refugees from Nazism and a comprehensive schoolboy in north London helped to form his political beliefs. In deeply personal passages, the self-professed atheist described himself as a “person of faith”, whose faith was not in a religion but in a shared value system which

involves the duty to work together to make the country better and never to shrug his shoulders at injustice. Miliband said that Britain’s One Nation spirit was shown in the Second World War, when people of all backgrounds worked together to defeat Hitler’s Germany, and in the post-war era of Labour prime minister Clement Attlee, when they worked together to rebuild the battered country. He stressed that he was not offering a return to the politics of Attlee or Disraeli, but calling upon the country to show the same spirit in rebuilding Britain’s economic prosperity in the wake of the financial collapse and recession. Britain has overcome its greatest challenges by coming together as one nation in the past, and can overcome the challenges of 2012 by doing the same now, he said. He set out his proposals for a One Nation banking system, in which deposits left by ordinary savers in high street branches cannot be used in the “casino” activities of the same bank’s trading arm; One Nation education, providing a “gold standard” vocational education with English and maths to 18 for children who are not going to university; and One Nation business, with reforms to takeover rules

Ed Miliband delivered his speech without notes and shareholder rights to encourage long-term investment. Aides said that Miliband wrote the speech himself over the course of the past few weeks, and decided to deliver it without notes to achieve a more direct and authentic connection with his audience in the hall and at home watching on television.

Lost April ‘got into van willingly’ MISSING five-year-old April Jones appeared to get into her abductor’s van willingly, police have said, with nothing as yet to suggest there was a struggle. The little girl was last seen by another child getting into the driver’s side of a grey van which drove off in the Mid Wales town of Machynlleth at about 7pm on Monday. Detective Superintendent Reg Bevan, from Dyfed Powys Police, told a media conference yesterday that he was not sure whether April had been led to the vehicle or went there herself. He said: “The indications are that she got into the vehicle willingly.” Asked if there were any signs that there was a struggle, he said: “It’s very difficult to give an exact account of what happened. There’s nothing to suggest at this stage that there was a struggle when she got into the car.” Investigators are now trying to get accurate information from the children who were with her around the time she was kidnapped. April got into a grey van that has been described as small at the front and large at the back. Repeating pleas for any information, he said the force

would be combing through CCTV to find out what happened and initially concentrating searches in the immediate area. He said specialist officers are supporting April’s family during what must be “their worst nightmare”. Bevan said: “The family, as you would imagine, it must be their worst nightmare. As you would expect, it is a very, very difficult time for them. But we do have specialist advisers with them.”

PEOPLE are safer in their homes now than they have been in a generation, Britain’s most senior police officer has said. Burglary is at a 27-year low across the country, despite people often fearing they are not safe in their house, Scotland Yard Commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe said. His comments come after the top judge in England and Wales defended householders’ rights to protect themselves from intruders. “Although people sometimes despair about crime, burglary is about a 27-year low right around the country,” HoganHowe said. “Burglary is going down. “People often don’t think they’re safe in their house, they’re actually more safe than they have ever been in a generation.” A total of 501,053 burglaries were recorded by police in 2011/12, including 245,317 in a dwelling, less than half the 1,015,075 recorded in 1997, 519,265 of which were in a dwelling, figures from the latest Crime Survey of England and Wales showed. The Lord Chief Justice, Lord Judge, said last week that frightened and furious householders have the right to get rid of burglars in their homes and were not expected to remain calm when confronted by intruders. “If your home is burgled and you’re in there, you have the right to get rid of the burglar,” Lord Judge said. “When you’re at home you want to feel safe, and in my view you’re entitled to feel safe and secure,” he said. “This is your haven, this is your refuge, this is where you have the right to be safe.” He went on: “A predecessor of mine 400 years ago who said, ‘Your home is your castle’, that’s what he is reflecting on. “This is the place where you pull up the drawbridge and the moat makes you safe.

China piles more pressure on artist

WORLD TODAY Ozal remains exhumed THE remains of former President Turgut Ozal, who led Turkey out of military rule in the 1980s and drove far-reaching economic reform, were exhumed yesterday on the orders of prosecutors investigating suspicions of foul play in his death 19 years ago. Amid tight security, mechanical diggers dug up his grave within a towering mausoleum in an Istanbul cemetery. Ozal died of heart failure in April 1993 in an Ankara hospital at the age of 65 and while in ofďŹ ce. Relatives and associates voiced suspicions he had been poisoned. A Muslim cleric was present at the exhumation, which lasted 7.5 hours. Ozal’s remains were placed in a zinc-coated cofďŹ n which was wrapped in the Turkish ag and carried ceremoniously by police ofďŹ cers in formal uniforms to a municipal hearse.

Students killed GUNMEN shot dead at least 26 students in an attack overnight on their college residence in northeast Nigeria, a college spokesman said yesterday. The attack took place at the Federal Polytechnic Mubi in remote Adamawa state late on Monday night, the head of the information department at the college said. “The killers went from room to room, slaughtering them one by one, said witness Mohammed Awal. Some were shot, others killed with machetes, he said. Adamawa state, like much of the north, has been targeted by Islamist insurgents, but police were also investigating whether the killings might have been motivated by a political feud inside the college.

Six crew are arrested after HK ferry deaths By Tan Ee Lyn and James Pomfret HONG Kong police arrested six crew yesterday after a ferry and a company boat carrying more than 120 staff and family celebrating the mid-autumn festival collided, killing 37 people as the boat sank. The boat, belonging to Hongkong Electric Co, controlled by billionaire Li Kashing, was taking passengers to watch ďŹ reworks in the city’s Victoria Harbour on Monday when the two vessels collided near the picturesque outlying island of Lamma. Five children were among the dead. More than 100 peo-

At least 37 dead after a ferry and company boat collide ple were taken to hospital, with nine suffering serious injuries or in critical condition, the government said in a statement. “We suspect somebody did not fulďŹ l their responsibility, that’s why we made the arrests,â€? Police Commissioner Andy Tsang said. “We do not rule out the possibility that further arrests will be made.â€? The arrests involved crew of both vessels. The collision sparked a major rescue involving dive teams, helicopters and boats

that saw scores plucked from the sea. A large crane on a barge was connected to the stricken boat. “Within 10 minutes, the ship had sunk. We had to wait at least 20 minutes before we were rescued,â€? said one male survivor, wrapped in a blanket. Survivors said people had to break windows to swim to the surface. “We thought we were going to die. Everyone was trapped inside,â€? said a middle-aged woman. The ďŹ reworks marked the

mid-autumn festival, when the moon is full, and China’s National Day. Hong Kong returned to Chinese from British rule in 1997. Hongkong Electric, a unit of Power Assets Holdings which is controlled by Asia’s richest man Li, said the boat had capacity to hold up to 200 people. The tragedy was the worst to hit Hong Kong since 1996 when more than 40 people died in a ďŹ re in a commercial building. The ferry, owned by Hong Kong and Kowloon Ferry Holdings, suffered a damaged bow in the collision, but made it safely to the pier on Lamma, about a half-hour away from downtown Hong Kong.

CHINA’S most famous political dissident, Ai Weiwei, said yesterday authorities have revoked the business licence of the company that produces his art in what he maintains is a trumped-up case for criticising the government. The world-renowned artist, who faces a possible jail sentence on tax evasion charges, cited authorities as saying the company had failed to complete re-registration requirements. Ai said the company was unable to register because the necessary documents to ďŹ le an annual report were being held by the government. Authorities conďŹ scated papers and computers from him after he was taken into custody last year, he said. The 81day detention raised an international outcry. “They’ve returned computers, but not the accounting documents related to taxes,â€? the 55-year-old said, adding he received a notice on Sunday from public security authorities informing him the licence was being revoked. “As a tax issue, it shouldn’t be public security departments getting involved,â€? he told Reuters. “They should return the documents to me.â€? Activists see the tax evasion case as an attempt to muzzle the outspoken artist, who has repeatedly criticised the Chinese government for outing the rule of law and the rights of citizens. A Chinese court last month upheld a $2.4 million tax evasion ďŹ ne against Ai, meaning he risks arrest if he does not pay a remaining ďŹ ne of around 6.6 million yuan ($1.05 million). Ai said if the government shuts the company, Beijing Fake Cultural Development Ltd, then there will be no way to pay any further ďŹ nes. “If they shut down the company, then entities to pay any ďŹ ne will not exist,â€? Ai said. “I feel this waives any penalties for the company.â€?

Georgian president accepts polls defeat

Vatican butler alleges harsh holding conditions

Saakashvili concedes Ivanishvili coalition win

POPE Benedict’s former butler, facing trial for stealing papal documents, told a Vatican court yesterday he was held in a tiny room with the light on constantly and put under pyschological pressure in the first few weeks of his detention. A judge ordered a probe of the Vatican police force after Paulo Gabriele made the assertions on the second day of the trial. Gabriele pleaded not guilty to charges of aggravated theft. He is accused of passing documents alleging corruption in the Vatican to a journalist. But he said in his testimony he considered himself “guilty of betraying the trust of the Holy Father, who I loved like a son”. The session, which also included testimony from Pope Benedict’s private secretary, laid bare some of the innerworkings of the Vatican for the first time. Asked by his lawyer Cristiana Arru if it was true that for the first weeks after his arrest on May 23 he was held in a room so narrow he could not stretch out his arms, he said: “Yes.”

By Margarita Antidze and Steve Gutterman GEORGIA’S President Mikheil Saakashvili conceded defeat yesterday in parliamentary elections to a coalition led by a tycoon who has promised to ease tensions with Moscow, four years after the staunch U.S. ally lost a war with Russia. Saakashvili’s acceptance that his party will go into opposition to billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili’s Georgian Dream raised the chances of the country’s first peaceful transfer of power between rival parties since the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. But although it strengthens Georgia’s democratic credentials, it could lead to an uneasy cohabitation between Ivanishvili, who is likely to become prime minister, and Saakashvili, who is due to step down as president next year. Instability in the Caucasus country would worry the West because it is a conduit for Caspian Sea energy supplies to Europe and has a strategic location on the Black Sea between former Soviet master Russia and Iran, Turkey and central Asia. “According to preliminary results, it is clear that Georgian Dream obtained a majority in this election,” Saakash-

A newspaper shows images of Georgian President Mikheil Saakasvhili (left) and Georgian Dream coalition leader Bidzina Ivanishvili, in Tbilisi yesterday vili said in a televised address. “This means that the parliamentary majority should set up a new government.” “Despite a very polarising campaign that included harsh rhetoric and shortcomings, the Georgian people have freely expressed their will at the ballot box,” Tonino Picula, who led a mission monitoring the vote, said in a statement. Georgian Dream supporters had already marked their victory, waving flags and sounding car horns in the capital Tbilisi on Monday in celebrations evoking the euphoria of the 2003 Rose

Revolution that propelled Saakashvili to power. “I expected this result. Justice has finally been restored,” I believe that Bidzina will make our lives better,” said Nino Kantaria, 42, in central Tbilisi. “This is not a time for protests, it is a time for celebration.” Defeat for the ruling United National Movement (UNM) was a heavy blow for Saakashvili, who was brought to power by the bloodless revolution that swept away the Soviet old guard, but drew his nation into a humiliating fiveday war with Russia in 2008.

Strauss-Kahn rape inquiry dropped FRANCE’S public prosecution service said yesterday it was shelving an investigation into allegations that disgraced former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn, a man once tipped to become president of France, had engaged in group rape. The prosecution service said in a statement it had taken the decision after a young woman retracted an allegation against the 63-year-old, who is also fighting wider accusations of sexual misdemeanour in France and a civil case in the United States. Strauss-Kahn’s legal team welcomed what amounted to a partial victory for their client, who has asked a court to end a wider French inquiry into sex parties organised out of the northern city of Lille. “We are satisfied but the fight goes on,” Richard Malka, a lawyer for Strauss-Kahn, said. “This case is a nonstarter ... Now we’re starting to prove it.”

Paulo Gabriele said he was held in a tiny room In answer to a question by the judge, Gabriele said: “For the first 15 to 20 days the light was on 24 hours a day and there was no switch. As a result my eyesight was damaged.” He also said he was subjected to what he and his lawyer called psychological pressure. On the first night in the room in the Vatican’s police station “even a pillow was denied me”, he said. After hearing the accusations of abuse, the president of the three-judge panel, Giuseppe Dalla Torre, told Vatican prosecutor Nicola Picardi to open a file on the issue.

Split banking activities says EU By John O'Donnell

Reformed banks should separate services to lessen risk

BANKS should separate deposit taking from trading and other high-risk investment banking work to shield taxpayers from further bailouts and protect savers, an EU advisory group said yesterday. The advisers also single out the risks of property lending and said it should be underpinned with larger capital reserves. The European Commission set up the group of experts, led by Bank of Finland Governor Erkki Liikanen, to examine bank structures. The report will reignite a debate in Europe about reforming banks but it is unlikely that the EU's executive, the European Commission, will

respond soon with new regulation. It is more focused on winning backing for its separate banking union plans to make the European Central Bank the main supervisor for eurozone lenders, a step which non-eurozone states have deep concerns about. "The group has concluded that it is necessary to require legal separation of certain particularly risky financial activities from deposit taking banks within the banking group," said the report. "The activities to be separated would include proprietary trading of securities and derivatives, and certain other

New Barclays’ boss focuses on bank's tradition BARCLAYS has promoted two of its top consumer banking bosses to its executive committee as the British bank's new boss puts more focus on traditional banking after criticism of its rapid growth in higher risk investment banking. Under the rejig, Ashok Vaswani will become global head of retail and business banking products and services, widening his current UK role. Antony Jenkins, who took over as chief executive a month, is expected to put more focus back on retail banking after more than a decade of expansion in investment banking. "These changes reflect the importance of our retail businesses for Barclays and will make for a better balance between business and functional representation on the executive committee," Jenkins said.

activities closely linked with securities and derivatives markets." The recommendations borrow from policies already being implemented in Britain to ring-fence retail banking and in the United States to curb banks' proprietary trading or taking bets with own money. The report also backs the idea of bail-in debt, a mechanism to impose losses on bondholders in the case of a banks' bailout or collapse. The Liikanen group suggests that bankers should accept this type of bond as part of their bonus. Legally separating or ringfencing investment banking

would make it easier for the part of the bank that holds savers' deposits and lends to businesses to keep running even if other parts of the group collapsed, some banking experts say. It would affect European banks such as Britain's Barclays, Germany's Deutsche Bank and France's BNP Paribas, which engage in high street banking alongside riskier trading in stocks, debt and other securities. With property crashes in Spain, Ireland and elsewhere having triggered problems for banks, there is also a recommendation to consider specific capital charges to cover

risks from property loans on a bank's books. But European policymakers, struggling to contain the regional debt crisis and associated banking troubles, are set to give priority to creating a banking union that would eventually allow eurozone countries to jointly support banks. "This report will feed our reflections on the need for further action," said Michel Barnier, the European Commissioner in charge of regulation. "I will now consider the next steps, in which the Commission will look at the impact of these recommendations both

Bank of Finland Governor Erkki Liikanen on growth and on the safety and integrity of financial services."

Greece struggles to reach troika agreement

The government blames the rial's drop on currency speculators

By Renee Maltezou

Iran vows war on speculators as rial continues its plunge By Yeganeh Torbati IRAN expects its security services to root out speculators who are to blame for a plunge of the rial to record lows, a minister said yesterday, after the currency lost about a third of its value in the past week. Western economic sanctions against Iran's disputed nuclear programme are ravaging its economy by reducing its ability to earn foreign exchange from oil exports. Iranians have responded by scrambling to change their rial savings into hard currency, fuelling the slide. The rial was trading at about 37,500 to the dollar in the free market yesterday, down from around 34,200 at the close of business on Monday, a foreign exchange trader in Tehran told Reuters by telephone. Reflecting the turmoil in the market, other Tehran traders said the rial had dropped even further, to 38,000 or 40,000. The traders declined to be named because of the political sensitivity of the issue. The government blames the accelerating drop on currency speculators and

has tried in vain this year to stamp out black market traders. "We have greater expectations that the security services will control the branches and sources of disruption in the exchange market," Iran's minister of industry, mines and trade Mehdi Ghazanfari said, according to the Fars news agency. "Brokers in the market are also pursuing the increase in price because for them it will be profitable, and there is nobody to control them." Ghazanfari did not elaborate on the identity of the speculators or how authorities could control them. Many businessmen and ordinary citizens in Iran blame the government for the currency crisis. The rial has been depreciating for over a year and has lost about two-thirds of its value since June 2011. Its losses have accelerated in the past week after the government launched an "exchange centre" to supply dollars to importers of some basic goods. Far from stabilising the currency, the new centre appears to have undermined it by tying the rate faced by those importers to the plunging free market

rate. This threatens to fuel inflation, already put by the government at around 25 per cent. Although the currency crisis has shown no sign of forcing changes in the government, it has given ammunition to parliamentary critics of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who have accused him of dithering and incompetence. Mohammad Reza Bahonar, deputy speaker of parliament, insisted yesterday that authorities had enough financial firepower to stabilise the rial. "The government has no lack of currency and can inject it into the market for a long amount of time," the Mehr news agency quoted him as saying. But some analysts outside the country believe Iran's foreign reserves have begun to shrink, which could make it increasingly difficult for the country to finance its imports and may account for the apparent reluctance of the central bank to supply more dollars to the market in the past week. On Sunday, Israeli Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz said Iran's economy was "on the verge of collapse" and estimated the government had lost $45-50 billion in oil revenue because of the sanctions.

GREECE held a new round of talks with foreign lenders to bridge differences over two billion euros of disputed austerity cuts yesterday, with time running short to clinch a deal before a key meeting of eurozone ministers next week. Athens has been haggling for weeks over 12 billion euros of cutbacks that its European Union and International Monetary Fund lenders have refused to sign off on over fears that some of the proposed savings are unlikely to materialise. For the second day in a row, inspectors from the so-called troika of European Commission, European Central Bank and IMF lenders had to face rows of angry Greeks heckling them as they entered a ministry building to start discussions. At the labour ministry yesterday, dozens of disabled Greeks and their carers blocked the main entrance and chanted "We won't let it pass!" in protest at the cuts. One held a banner saying: "They handed 200 billion to bankers but cut down on medicine, treatment and benefits for the disabled." The protests came a day after Greece unveiled an austerity budget that predicted a sixth year of recession in 2013 but failed to convince the troika, which has been sceptical of Athens' plans to cut health and defence spending. "The troika is questioning the effectiveness of the measures related to structural reforms," a government official said, citing planned savings from restructuring entities in health and other ministries. The official expressed optimism that a deal with the troika would be struck by the end of the week.

Opinion

Word war over Cultural Centre ignores the likely lack of funds A REPORT in a daily newspaper last week about the cost of the construction of the Culture Centre in the capital has sparked a war over EU funds between Nicosia and Limassol. These funds are limited and both towns are laying claim to a large part of them - the capital for the Culture Centre that hopes to become the main venue for musical events and Limassol for projects in progress such as the multi-function seaside park and the linear park along the Garyllis river. While Limassol municipality argued that is was entitled to additional funds to complete unfinished projects, Nicosia municipality wanted to know if the funds for the Culture Centre were still available and if not what they had been spent on. Nicosia municipality went as far as to suggest the capital was being persecuted. “Those who are fighting the Centre want the centre of Nicosia to be made up of empty fields,” an announcement said, adding that this was the “most important development plan in the capital”. It is important only in as far as it would create several hundred jobs during very difficult economic times. Otherwise, a state of the art centre for music events is something that the capital does not really need. It simply does not have the population to sustain it financially; in fact the whole island’s population is not big enough to make such a centre viable. Classical music concerts normally attract a few hundred people, so how would the Centre fill its auditorium of 2,500 seats on a regular basis? Is it worth spending more than €100 million on a centre which might fill up once or twice a year? We need a modern museum much more than a Culture Centre, even though it is too late now to change plans. The legislature already approved €11.6 million for the centre, while work is set to begin relatively soon. However there is still the danger that the EU funds, expected to cover 85 per cent of the estimated cost of the centre (€115 million) will not be given, as a penalty for the Cyprus government’s failure to meet the fiscal target it had set itself for this year. This possibility was pointed out by the finance minister in a confidential report to the cabinet which was published by a newspaper. What would happen if Cyprus was ineligible for the funds that it was relying on receiving from the EU? Will the project be abandoned or will our impecunious state be obliged to pick up the bill? We think that before any work begins, the authorities have a responsibility to establish whether the EU funding will be secured, because at the moment nobody seems to know what is happening. This is what the municipalities of Nicosia and Limassol should find out, instead of engaging in a war of words, which could, ultimately, be over nothing.

Mission accomplished for Obama, Bibi at UN meet Analysis Louis Charbonneau

U

.S. President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeared to get what they hoped for at the annual U.N. General Assembly after closing ranks to send a message to Iran that it may face war over its nuclear programme. The two men left the U.N. meeting with more than they arrived with: Obama with an assurance Israel would not attack Iran’s nuclear sites before the November 6 US presidential election, and Netanyahu with a commitment from Obama to do whatever it takes to prevent Iran from producing an atomic bomb. The General Assembly was notable for what was not accomplished. World powers failed to break deadlocks over Iran’s nuclear programme, the conflicts in Syria, Mali and Congo, and the stalled Israel-Palestinian peace talks. "The diplomatic situation at the UN may have to get worse before it gets better,” said Richard Gowan of New York University. “Perhaps we need a diplomatic debacle on the scale of Iraq - or a peacekeeping failure like Srebrenica (Bosnia) - before big states wake up and ask why the UN is stagnating.” In July 1995, UN peacekeepers in Bosnia failed to prevent the massacre of some 8,000 Muslim men and boys in Srebrenica. Analysts and diplomats argue that the lack of UN backing for the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 highlighted the need for a UN seal of approval for military interventions. Widely seen as “illegal,” as former UN chief Kofi Annan described it, Western powers made certain the NATO intervention in Libya last year had the backing of the UN Security Council unlike the Iraq war. While the United States and Israel have long refused to rule out the use of military force to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, Netanyahu has criticised Obama for failing to make clear to Tehran under what circumstances Western powers would be prepared to attack Iranian nuclear facilities. Suggestions from Israel that he was letting down the Jewish

Both US President Barack Obama (right) and Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu achieved their aims regarding Iran at the annual UN General Assembly last week (AFP) state were an irritant Obama did not want to put up with in the final weeks before an election, especially given the way the issue has been leveraged by Republican challenger Mitt Romney. Meanwhile, Western officials say, Netanyahu may want to avoid antagonising Israel’s main ally and poisoning ties with the man who could occupy the White House for another four years. Iran rejects Western allegations it is developing the capability to produce atomic bombs it says its nuclear programme is for peaceful energy and medical purposes - and refuses to comply with Security Council demands to halt nuclear enrichment. This has led to increasingly harsh UN and Western sanctions that have caused the value of Iran’s currency to plummet. Israel sees a nuclear-armed Iran as a threat to its existence. In his speech to the General Assembly on Thursday, Netanyahu held up a cartoonish diagram of a bomb with a fuse to illustrate the threat of Iran’s nuclear program. He used a red marker to draw a line at the point where Iran would be close to producing an atomic bomb. Images of “Bibi’s bomb” - refer-

ring to Netanyahu’s nickname with its graphic “red line” representing the moment Iran can no longer be stopped from getting a nuclear weapon will likely be the defining image of this year’s assembly. Netanyahu praised Obama for telling the General Assembly that the United States will “do what we must” to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and acknowledged there was still room for diplomacy. Harsh sanctions, Netanyahu said, could probably persuade Tehran not to build a nuclear weapon. But the Israeli leader also hinted at war. He said Iran’s enrichment plants were visible and vulnerable to attack and suggested a decision on force could come by next spring. Tehran’s UN mission responded by saying Iran has the means and right to retaliate with full force against any attack. Israel, presumed to be the region’s only nuclear power, has twice destroyed sites it feared could be used to develop atomic weapons - in 1981 in Iraq and in 2007 in Syria. Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem, on the final day of the session yesterday, accused

the US, France, Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia of hijacking what was a domestic crisis by supporting rebels with arms and money. Russia, an ally of Syria, and China have vetoed three Security Council resolutions condemning Assad’s government. Both made clear they still oppose UN sanctions against Syria or new measures against Iran, which Western nations accuse of propping up Assad’s government. The Palestinians, whose aspirations for their own state are now taking a back seat at the UN to Iran, Syria and the Arab Spring, were probably also disappointed by the General Assembly. A year ago in New York, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announced his bid for full UN membership for a Palestinian state, sparking excitement at the General Assembly and the West Bank. The request wilted in the face of US opposition. This year, Abbas announced he was looking for a less-ambitious status upgrade at the world body that would make it a “nonmember state” like the Vatican, instead of an “entity.” There was no excitement at the General Assembly or the West Bank.

Showbiz

McCarthy criticises ‘Homeland’ scenes FORMER hostage John McCarthy has voiced his concern over violent scenes in Homeland, the hit drama about a US war hero turned by al Qaeda, and dubbed part of the show’s plot “ridiculous”. The US drama is just about to return with a second series, having scooped a clutch of Emmy awards, including a best actor gong for its British star Damian Lewis. Lewis, who plays US marine Nicholas Brody, has said he took inspiration for his character from An Evil Cradling, Brian Keenan’s book on the four-and-ahalf years he was held hostage in Lebanon by terror group Islamic Jihad. Keenan’s cellmate for much of that time was British journalist and broadcaster McCarthy, who was taken at gunpoint from a Beirut street in 1986 as he

drove to the airport to catch a flight home. McCarthy hinted that he disapproved of the scenes in Homeland, where Brody, who returns to the US as an al Qaeda sleeper agent having been held captive in Iraq, appears to have flashbacks of beating a fellow marine to death to appease his captors. He told the Radio Times: “My concern is that, with the flashbacks and hints and really horrible violence we see, his conversion is almost like titillation let’s keep watching... Did he really kill his comrade?” He said of the flashback scenes: “It all seems so mad, the whole bloody plot. It seems ridiculous. “But watching someone being beaten to death in that way, even in the fairly snippety bits I’ve seen - it is absolutely

grotesque and makes your stomach churn. “I do fear we’re not really appreciating the absolute horror of what someone’s going through there. Anybody who has been severely beaten wouldn’t see that as entertainment. They would be feeling, ‘Oh my God, oh my God’. “Stockholm Syndrome (the psychological phenomenon where hostages excuse and even defend their captors) can happen, of course, but I don’t think it would happen through appalling torture frankly. I really don’t think you could beat your mate to death.” McCarthy, who was debriefed by MI6 and the CIA when he returned to Britain, also said the scenes showing Brody being questioned by the CIA did not ring true and were “an unrealistic portrayal of somebody re-entering society”.

Rimes admits she likes rehab

Adele lends sultry voice to Bond theme for Skyfall

LEANN Rimes has admitted she likes rehab. The “Can’t Fight The Moonlight” hitmaker - who recently completed a 30-day stint in an in-patient facility for stress and anxiety - loves mulling over her problems with a therapist and is hopeful the treatment is working. LeAnn told The Sun newspaper: “I’ve been in therapy my whole life. I like going. “I like being able to have that third-party input and someone to listen that has nothing to do with your life. “Everyone has an opinion of how I am and how I should be, and now I’m focusing on how I want to be.” The 30-year-old country singer is thought to have developed anxiety because of negative comments from online trolls about her relationship with her husband Eddie Cibrian, with whom she began a fling while they were both married to other people. She reflected: “I think it’s really hard to deal with twitter and Facebook and all these social media outlets. “And it’s hard to take it day after day of reading and seeing things that someone you don’t even know says about you. As much as you said you don’t want it to penetrate, it does, because you’re human.” The star is also said to be deeply worried that Eddie could be cheating on her, despite recently receiving support from her former love rival, his ex-wife Brandi Glanville.

Chanteuse’s first single since bestselling 21 By Piya Sinha-Roy GRAMMY-winning British singer Adele is adding Bond girl to her superstar resume by signing on to write and sing the theme of the latest James Bond film Skyfall - her first song to be released since her bestselling heartbreak album 21 - Columbia Records said in a statement on Monday. Adele, 24, who swept the Grammy Awards earlier this year with accolades in six categories, is set to release the song on Friday on her official website, to coincide with the Bond film franchise’s 50th anniversary and Global James Bond Day. The sultry singer wrote Skyfall with long-time collaborator Paul Epworth. She recorded it at London’s Abbey Road Studios with a 77-piece orchestra. Adele said in a statement that she was persuaded to do the song after she “fell in love with the script”. “I was a little hesitant at first to be involved with

Adele will release the latest Bond film’s theme on her official website this Friday the theme song for Skyfall. There’s a lot of instant spotlight and pressure when it comes to a Bond song,” the singer said. “When we recorded the strings, it was one of the proudest moments of my life. I’ll be backcombing my hair when I’m 60, telling people I was a Bond girl

back in the day, I’m sure.” The James Bond title songs have become a signature of the films, featuring suave British agent 007 holding a gun in a pose that has become iconic. Singers who have performed the title songs over the past five decades include Shirley Bassey in

1971’s Diamonds Are Forever and 1979’s Moonraker, Paul McCartney on 1973’s Live and Let Die and, more recently, Madonna on 2002’s Die Another Day. Jack White and Alicia Keys performed “Another Way To Die” from 2008’s Quantum of Solace. Skyfall, the 23rd film in

the Bond franchise and the third film with actor Daniel Craig in the lead role, will see the womanising rogue super-spy take on another mission to save the world. The film will be released in Britain and most European nations on October 26. It arrives in US movie theatres on November 9.

Schwarzenegger’s parents used to think he was gay Lindsay Lohan wants probe on attacker reopened ARNOLD Schwarzenegger’s parents used to think he was gay. The Terminator muscleman has revealed his family thought he was interested in men as a teenager because there was “something off” and they tried their best to ‘cure’ him of it. Speaking on US talk show 60 Minutes, the actor said his father took an aggressive approach and “ran after me with a belt and beat me”, whereas his mother took him to visit a doctor because she was so worried. He joked: “I don’t know if mum thought I was gay, or if she just thought there was something off. And ‘let’s catch it early’. “She asked the doctor, ‘Can you help me? I

don’t know if there’s something wrong with my son because his wall is full of naked men. “All of Arnold’s friends have pictures of girls above their bed. And Arnold has no girls’.” The 65-year-old star also confessed he deeply regrets having an affair with his housekeeper Mildred Beana - with whom he fathered an illegitimate son - and ruining his 25-year marriage to now estranged wife Maria Shriver. He said: “It was terrible. I inflicted tremendous pain on Maria and unbelievable pain on the kids.” The former Governor of California is currently promoting his tell-all book Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story.

LINDSAY Lohan wants police to reopen their investigation into the man she claims attacked her. The Liz & Dick actress filed a report claiming she was choked and thrown to the floor by Christian LaBella after she confronted him for taking pictures of her in a New York City hotel room at the weekend, but after police decided to drop all charges, Lindsay revealed she is furious and “in shock”. She told the New York Post’s Page Six: “He isn’t going to get away with this. I’m in shock and it was a really scary situation.” However, Christian’s uncle Peter Jessop insists his nephew is innocent and blasted

Lindsay’s mother Dina Lohan for her remarks about the incident. He said: “It’s amazing that her mom said, ‘Thank God he didn’t have a weapon’ — of course he didn’t have a weapon. He’s a good kid, he’s worked for two congressmen. He just went to New York for the weekend. Hopefully this doesn’t cost him his job. He is in shock about how the media has twisted this story.” Lindsay claimed Christian befriended someone in her group at 1 Oak nightclub with the intention of getting closer to her. She said they later got into a heated physical argument after she found out he had taken more than 50 photos of her and was emailing them to his friends.

Education Senior School celebrates another batch of excellent exam results

Britain’s Labour leader vows vocational shake-up

RAPIDLY gaining a name for itself as one of the best schools on the island, The Senior School is once again celebrating an outstanding set of examination results which are a testament to the hard work of the students and the commitment of their teachers and parents. The School’s I/GCSE results are always excellent and this year is no exception. Ninety-eight per cent of students gained five A* - C grades with over 40 per cent achieving five or more A*/A grades. Students achieved A* or A grade passes in over 50 per cent of all I/GCSE exams and A* - B grade passes in over 75 per cent of all I/GCSE exams. In addition 70 per cent of students gained A* - C grades in the EBacc (English Baccalaureate) subjects: English, maths, two sciences, history or geography and a foreign language. The school’s sixth form continues to grow and there were many successes again this year. At A2, 60 per cent of students achieved an A* or A whilst at AS Level an impressive 98 per cent of students gained an A grade. This is the third year the school has celebrated the graduation of its Year 13 class; the sixth form goes from strength to strength. Students have gone on to a range of prestigious universities in the UK, Europe and the United States. The school is very proud of its sixth form students who were popular with staff and their peers alike and who will be much missed as mature role models to the rest of the School. The Senior School’s approach to education is unique in Nicosia, and its results are evidence that the students are achieving highly at all levels.

Miliband offers alternative to EBaccs By Andrew Woodcock A LABOUR Government in Britain would carry out the biggest shake-up of vocational education for a generation to create a “gold standard” qualification to stand alongside the A-level for the 50 per cent of young people who do not go to university, Ed Miliband said yesterday. The Technical Baccalaureate - or TechBacc - would be awarded at 18 to youngsters who complete a programme of work experience, schoolbased vocational training and academic courses in English and maths. It would be coupled with a major boost in apprenticeships to provide a pathway to success for the “forgotten 50 per cent” whose needs have been neglected by successive governments, the Labour leader said. In a highly personal keynote speech to the Labour conference in Manchester, Miliband drew on his own memories of comprehensive schooling in north London and spoke about classmates failed by the education system because they were not suited to academic exams and university. “For years and years, our party has focused on those young people who go to university. And that matters,” Miliband said. “But it’s time now to focus on those who don’t go to university. The young people who are too often the forgot-

Labour leader Ed Miliband and shadow chancellor Ed Balls sit on the platform at the Labour Party conference in Manchester ten 50 per cent. “We cannot succeed if we can have an education system which only works for half the country. I want ours to be a country where kids aspire not just to go to Oxford and Cambridge but to excellent technical colleges and elite vocational institutions.” Under Labour’s plans, businesses would be given control of the £1 billion-ayear government funding for apprenticeships, coming together in regional or sectoral groups to buy the training they need. The civil service would introduce a fast track route for apprentices similar to the one already in place for graduates, and government contracts would be awarded on the condition that the firms involved are providing apprenticeships. Senior Labour sources said no target was being set for the number of extra apprentices, but experience from Germany suggested that it could deliver 100,000 more

posts. Miliband sought to draw a contrast between his TechBacc plan and the EBacc qualification proposed by Education Secretary Michael Gove, which Labour believes threatens to revive two-tier academic exams at 16. Arguing that EBaccs will replicate the old system of O-levels and CSEs which “just wrote a whole set of people off”, Miliband said: “We don’t want to go back to that.” And he accused Gove of having “contempt for vocational qualifications (and) nothing to say about education beyond 16”. “He is stuck in the past, offering no vision for the 21st century,” he said. “There is a choice of two

futures for education. The Tory plan for an education system designed for a narrower and narrower elite. Or our plan.” Miliband’s decision to talk about his own schooldays at Haverstock Comprehensive in the 1980s - complete with “the scariest headmistress you can imagine, Mrs Jenkins” - appeared designed to provide a contrast with David Cameron’s education at the exclusive private school Eton. “I went to my local school with people from all backgrounds,” Miliband said. “I still remember the motivation, the inspiration from some amazing teaching... “My school taught us a lot more than just how to pass exams: it taught people how to get on with each other,

whoever they are and wherever they were from. “I will always be grateful, because I know I would not be standing here today as leader of the Labour Party without my comprehensive school education.” After his deputy Harriet Harman’s admission at the weekend that many voters still “do not know” Miliband, the Labour leader used his speech to fill out his personal story, recalling his childhood as the son of Jewish refugees from the Nazis and his birth at the same NHS hospital where his sons were born. And he expanded on ideas set out over the weekend to rein in the “casino culture” in the banks and encourage long-term investment in business.

Tonight

Let’s go Brazil nuts

Exhibition Timeless visions CYPRIOT lawyer, art collector and artist George Tornaritis presents his solo painting exhibition tonight at Apocalypse Gallery in Nicosia. At first glance, Tornaritis’ latest landscapes depict the unspoilt Cyprus countryside with its customary simplicity. Rows of yellow ochre waves fill the canvas, clouds chase across blue skies and portraits add to the folkish, naive quality of his art. Yet look again and a more mysterious element emerges. Far from being pastoral idylls, Tornaritis’ paintings are underpinned by a seriousness, or what can be described as melancholy that impels us to explore them more closely. In this selection of works his creations confront a sense of timeless vision of everyday life or rather timelessness penetrates his works. Tornaritis paints in a naive style that combines symbolic expressionism. Naïve artwork is characteristically bright and colourful, with abundant space and generally depicts a non-naturalistic vision of the artist’s imagination, all of which abounds in his work. Primitive forms and autumnal yellow hues are key in his paintings of Cyprus. He simplifies his drawing, boldly outlining his shapes and exaggerates his colour to increase its emotional and expressive power. In this simplistic art, one could say that the metaphysical element dominates through the puzzled faces and misty landscapes. It’s almost as if all these familiar faces are looking for a sense of longing in conflicting social environment.

Coming Up Other Events When particles collide FOR THOSE curious about the origins of our universe, the nature of the particles we are made from and the power of fundamental science, make your way to the University of Cyprus this week to attend the inaugural evening of a photography exhibition from the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN). The exhibition will open on Friday at 7pm at the Anastasios G Leventis building at the University of Cyprus and will include paintings by George Georgiou inspired by the endless universe, a presentation by Professor Panos Razis about the relationship between Cyprus and CERN, as well as a lecture entitled Science Without Boundaries by the Director of CERN Rolf-Dieter Heuer on the opening night. The exhibition takes visitors on an extraordinary journey, starting with the Big Bang. Visitors will be able to investigate the building blocks of life, grapple with the mysteries of the universe, explore the world’s largest scientific experiment, and discover how fundamental

Born in Limassol in 1936, Tornaritis studied law at the University of Cambridge. In 1996 he co-founded with Dimitris Pierides the Tornaritis-Pierides Marine Life Foundation on which he bestowed a great part of his collection of fossils and marinelife specimens from Cyprus. The foundation has established two museums: the TornaritisPierides Municipal Museum of Palaeontology, Larnaca, and the Thalassa Museum, Ayia Napa. Since 1967 he paints subjects relating to Cyprus. In 1969 he exhibited in Famagusta with the well-known painter John Corbidge. In 2009 he presented his works with the Turkish-Cypriot painter Hulusi Halit at the Nicosia City Hall near the Green Line and has exhibited jointly with Hulusi Halit at the Heinrich Boll Foundation building in Berlin. He has also participated in numerous group painting exhibitions. Landscapes and Portraits of Cyprus Solo painting exhibition by George Tornaritis. Opens October 3, 7.30pm until October 15. BRAZIL is more than carnival, models, football and nature. For the ninth consecutive year, the Pharos Arts Foundation, the Honourary Consulate of Brazil and the Embassy of Brazil in Cyprus will present the annual Brazil Cultural Month. For centuries Brazil has symbolised a bold escape, igniting the Western imagination like no other South American country – this is one country that never fails to inspire with its multifaceted infectious magic. Throughout the months of October and November, a series of events dedicated to Brazil will showcase aspects of the country’s culture through art, music, films, books and educational programmes. Celebrating all things Brazilian, the festival kicks-off with a Brazilian Book Month, organised in collaboration with the Moufflon bookshop, presenting a selection of books (in English) which showcase the richness and diversity of Brazilian culture. Plastic surgeon Dr. Ioannis Lyras will present his book The Secret of the Brazilian Beauty at The Shoe Factory, followed by a cocktail reception and a short piano recital by Farlley Derze. Coinciding with all the activities is an educational programme, Brazil in the Primary School, which aims to initiate awareness of the country and its multi-sided aspects. The cultural month also sees the return of the Brazilian Film Festival for the ninth year. The festival will present 12 films from the contemporary Brazilian film industry, which will be screened with English subtitles. Brazil has a long tradition of producing excellent internationally acclaimed

films, so this selection of a mix and match of genres, is bound to have something to suit all tastes. Besides the burgeoning film industry, Brazil boasts a stimulating and vivacious music scene. Coming up in two week’s time is a recital by popular singer Cadu de Andrade and pianist Farlley Derze, and a classical guitar recital by the renowned guitarist Marcos Vinicius. But first up this week, crowds in Nicosia and Limassol can look forward to a concert with Ithamara Koorax, considered to be one of the top singers in the contemporary jazz scene. Although Rio de Janeirobased vocalist Koorax has long been established as a recording artist in her native Brazil, it wasn’t until 2000 that the general public were introduced to her unique vocal stylings on Milestone’s Serenade in Blue. In 2002 she was voted one of the World’s Top 4 Jazz Singers in US jazz bible Down Beat mag’s Readers Poll.

Back in 2000, Koorax was also voted for the first time one of the world’s best jazz singers by Down Beat, also appearing as # 3 Best Beyond Artist, behind only Sting and Carlos Santana, and ahead of such heavyweights as Tom Waits, Stevie Wonder and Joni Mitchell. From then on, Koorax’s reputation as a creative and expressive vocalist, gifted with a fouroctave range, spread quickly and her voice has became a very hot commodity all over the world. So far, Koorax has recorded 15 solo albums, 17 soundtracks and participated in more than 200 special projects and compilations. E N N Y Packham usually receives notes of thanks from brides whose dream dress she has created, but now she is designing for the Duchess of Cambridge she has received a rather different type of letter. “I had a little handwritten letter from a lady in Wisconsin passionately criticising me for the primrose yellow shift dress I made for the duchess,” says Packham. “She said didn’t I know about putting weights around the bottom of a hem, so it can’t blow up?” The duchess wore the dress at an airport while touring north America, and the wind blowing up the runway revealed rather too much of the royal legs. “Well, I didn’t know it was going to be worn on a windy runway,” laughs Packham. “But I did think maybe in future I will put in more weighting, just in case…” When the Duchess of Cambridge wants to plan a worldtour wardrobe, or even possibly fancies a little retail therapy, the designer she is most likely to visit, these days, is Packham. Her flagship boutique in London’s Mayfair is well worth leaving Kensginton Palace for. It’s a boudoir full of scented candles, flowers and faux-zebra-skin ottomans and hand-painted floral De Gournay wallpaper.

It used to be a bank, and all the money that was once stored there has rematerialised into dainty racks of sequined evening gowns costing £2,000 to £3,000 each, as well as maribou feather shrugs and glittering diamanté headdresses. Behind the old cashier’s mahogany partition are the changing rooms, and beyond them, safer and more private still is a former vault, windowless and cosy, with a big mirror and Hollywood lights. “This is where the magic happens,” says a smiling member of Packham’s staff. I think by this she might mean “where the duchess tries things on”. Southampton-born Packham has been in the business for 24 years, slowly building up a following for her feminine, flattering occasion wear. It isn’t high fashion - American Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour didn’t attend her New York Fashion Week showcase this month - but it is well beloved by women looking for timeless gowns that feel good to wear. “I don’t feel the need to be quirky or avant garde,” says Packham. “I’m just showing beautiful, glamorous clothing in a way that I hope will show how it could be worn.” Her bridal designs are much sought after - there was a craze, three years ago, for the “Elizabeth”, the white bejewelled creation Elizabeth Hur-

ley wore to marry Arun Nayar – but Packham’s eveningwear is increasingly seen on A-listers including Kate Winslet and Angelina Jolie and the brand is expanding into outlets all over the US. “Over the past year and a half our business has grown by 40 per cent,” she says. This is surely due in part to the royal seal of approval, but though Packham proudly displays pictures in-store of the duchess wearing her designs, most of those she has worn recently are bespoke and will never be available to the public. “We’re not Reiss,” she laughs. Last year the duchess chose a rose pearlescent Packham evening dress for her first public engagement as a mar-

ried woman and this summer, at a pre-Olympic gala at the Royal Albert Hall, she wore a stunning lace gown in teal - “Emerald green!” cries Packham. She is firm that

she isn’t going to talk about the duchess but can’t stop herself: “Everyone said it was teal, but I don’t know where that came from. It was emerald, verging on peacock. With a matching bespoke clutch in that very specific colour.” Packham has noticed an increasing demand for accessories made from the same material as the dress - could a new mood of formality be catching on, inspired by Kate’s perfectly turned-out look? “Yes, I think there is a new interest in glamorous dressing in this country - we just need more black-tie occasions. A lot of my designs are inspired by the 1930s, when people were fabulous at dressing up. Then it just all kind of fell away. But people are definitely getting better at finding not just the dress but the accessories, finding out what works together, building up a wardrobe. These things take time, and there’s an art to it, and you have to plan ahead.” The duchess is a model on that score, even wearing an orchid-print dress to an orchid-naming ceremony in Singapore’s botanical gardens.

The occasion had special significance since one of the blooms was named after the late Princess Diana, who had been intending to see the orchid at the time she died. The dress Kate wore was by Packham, with a hand-painted orchid design by De Gournay, clearly a house favourite. “A dress is an emotional thing to make,” says Packham. “You’ve got to fall in love with it, and not just with the dress - the whole process of designing it

‘A lot of my des by the 1930s, w fabulous at d has to be a good experience. If I don’t see an emotional response to a dress, then I think something’s wrong.” While training in fashion at St Martins, she met her partner Matthew Anderson, who was studying at Central (the two colleges are now merged as Central St Martins). They set up the company together,

share a home together and have had two children, Georgina, 18, and Isabella, 14 - but they have never married. She’s always the bridal designer, never the bride, even though she shares her business as well as her home life with him. “We thought it was probably quite enough,” she says. But Anderson might just be the secret weapon that gives her dresses that especially flattering quality. He is,

igns are inspired hen people were dressing up’ let’s face it, one of a relatively small minority of straight men who work in fashion. When I ask if he brings a man’s eye to her work, she laughs. “It’s always the same with guys. They’re not particularly into shift dresses, are they? He always likes the more shapely designs, I suppose. He loves what we do, and obviously

we’re both very creative people and that’s always been very helpful to me.” It’s undeniably been a great year for Packham. A dress she made for Sandra Bullock is included at the current V&A eveningwear exhibition. And Jolie paid her the ultimate compliment: not just wearing one of her dresses, but asking to keep it. She selected a burnished-gold long-sleeved dress from her spring/summer 2012 collection, posed in it at a premiere, and then asked if she could have it for her daughter to wear when she was older. “That was really nice when you think how many dresses Angelina has got,” says Packham proudly. As well as making a demure and formal wardrobe for the Duchess of Cambridge, she has also created a costume for burlesque artist Dita Von Teese. “Dita started wearing our evening gowns about three years ago, and then this year we made an outfit for one of her performances. It’s quite technical - we had to make as many layers as possible.” Well, quite - otherwise the show would be over far too soon. “She wasn’t stripping

of synchro-nised swim-mers.” e From the he royal to the ckham risqué, Packham sums it all up discreetly: “This past year and a half has been great for challenges.”

Television PICK OF THE DAY One Day (Novacinema1, 20.00) “I really did enjoy the book,” wrote Tracy Phillips, reviewing this fi lm for the Sunday Mail last year. “The cultural reference points and the characters were equally familiar, to me at least. And I did laugh out loud quite a lot”. Not so with the fi lm version, which only elicited a couple of chuckles despite being written by David Nicholls, who wrote the original; “Overall it is watchable as far as rom-coms go, but deeply disappointing for anyone who expected more having read the book,” concluded Tracy - and it’s worth bearing that in mind because I come to it from a whole other angle, never having read Mr. Nicholls’ bestseller. I’m also not from Yorkshire (admittedly, neither is Tracy) so I have no specific bone to pick with Anne Hathaway’s alleged Yorkshire accent - which is patchy, to put it kindly. Oh, and did I mention that I fi nd Anne Hathaway automatically adorable? I mean come on: what’s an occasional misplaced glottal stop between friends? In other words, I’m well-disposed to like this fluffy movie - and it must be said that the plot is ingenious, following a couple (played by Ms. Hathaway and Jim Sturgess) across 20 years, from the late 80s to the late 00s, picking them up every year on the same day as their lives wax

and wane. Jim is mostly shallow and unworthy, Anne a bit of a drip, pining away in bad jobs and generally being a martyr - but the passage of Time is poignant in itself. Mobile phones come in around ’96, fair-trade coffee and organic smoothies around the turn of the millennium and of course the duo get older, going through bad hair and bad relationships. You can relate, even if you’d rather not admit it. The fi lm isn’t perfect, not even close. Even beyond the accent - and despite Anne Hathaway’s automatic adorableness - our heroine is annoying; the book apparently made her more of a slut (or at least gave her more of a sex life), which may have countered her tendency to look wan and woebegone. Nor is it clear what she sees in the hero, especially once he turns into laddish, cokesniffi ng, money-obsessed 90s Man. There are irksome details, like the way Jim’s once-glamorous mum suddenly becomes very wise after being diagnosed with cancer. Yes - but Anne Hathaway is automatically adorable (I’m sorry, did I already say that?) and getting older, to be honest, sucks. “I think we’ve outgrown each other,” sighs our heroine sadly - and suddenly it’s lump-in-thethroat time. Sorry, Tracy. Made in 2011.

Fathers and Sons (LTV3, 20.15) Rodrigo Garcia is a son with a famous father: his dad is Nobel Prize winner Gabriel Garcia Marquez - but Rodrigo’s earnest, TV-like dramas (also including Nine Lives and Mother and Child) aren’t much like his dad’s magical-realist novels, and besides every son tends to live in his father’s shadow. This made-for-TV drama may be Rodrigo’s way of coming to terms with that tricky relationship, telling three stories of three families who live on the same street: fi rst we have Bradley Whitford and “the father-son bond that develops between [him] and his newborn son over 30 years,” then the tale of a pilot who “spends an extraordinary night with his son” (whatever that means), fi nally a young man coming home to his estranged family and meeting a woman who “sees past his tough-guy exterior”, presumably to the scared little boy within. Some may be moved; personally I’ll take one hundred years of solitude over 100 minutes with something so maudlin, and Gabriel Garcia Marquez would probably agree. Made in 2005.

First Monday in October (CyBC2, 21.00) How can we not Pick the great Walter Matthau in an 80s comedy about Supreme Court judges? Mr. Matthau is joined by Jill Clayburgh (both have now moved on to that big Supreme Court in the sky), as the fi rst woman to serve on America’s highest court - but she’s also a staunch conservative, putting her on collision course with liberal (but sexist) colleague Matthau. Will professional antagonism give way to guarded affection? Not a very good fi lm, but any Hollywood comedy where the heroes are Supreme Court judges (as opposed to horny teens) is incredibly civilised just in itself. Made in 1981.

House of the Rising Sun (Novacinema1, 22.00) “From the bestselling author” says the trailer for this little-known action fl ick, but neglects to say who that author is, which is probably a wise move. It’s actually based on a book by one Chuck Hustmyre (who?) - but its virtues aren’t exactly literary, starring brick-walllike former wrestler Dave Bautista as a crooked ex-cop now working security at a nightclub. He’s trying to make a new life for himself - at least till armed robbers overpower him and shoot the place up, killing the owner’s son; “The owner thinks I set up the robbery. The only way to clear my name was to fi nd the shooters, and the shooters are all dead,” explains our mumbling hero to the inevitable girl (Amy Smart). “Between right and wrong is where the truth lies,” claims the trailer grandly, which doesn’t really make much sense - but you don’t watch little-known action fl icks starring former wrestlers for the philosophical insights. Made in 2011.

HOROSCOPE

Across

ARIES March 21 - April 20

LEO July 23 - August 22

SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21

You may be lucky on the job front, yet be cautious about making decisions that affect your relationships. Venus moves into Virgo which means ties with co-workers can be sweeter and easier going, but don’t let someone’s sweet words get you to do their work. When it comes to your love life, make sure that your motives are absolutely pure.

Try to slow down today, otherwise you may make a decision you regret. A focus on your mind zone suggests that what should be easy, may turn out to be quite complicated. As Venus moves into your money sector, you may be tempted to explore your more extravagant side. Go easy if your cash is burning a hole in your pocket. All may not be as it seems.

You may find that a combination of far-sighted ideas and common sense gives you a distinct advantage over people. Today, your ability to be intuitive and weigh up those subtle signals helps you to impress those in positions of authority. Later, you may be able to smooth over differences and enjoy a fun time with family and friends.

TAURUS April 21 - May 21

VIRGO August 23 - September 23

CAPRICORN December 22 - January 20

There may be many ideas being thrown about for your consideration. You may be weighing the pros and cons, and yet find it incredibly hard to make a decision. While you need to be serious for part of the day, don’t take your work issues home with you. Try to squeeze in a little playful fun too. A social invite may come along which you decide to go for.

You are capable of taking on a mental challenge and resolving it to your satisfaction. Things are looking up as Venus moves into Virgo, and matters of the heart seem positively affected. Tonight, there may be the potential for fun and romance. If you and your partner have been unable to spend much time together, take advantage of this happy influence.

You’re once again where you like to be - back in control and in the driver’s seat. Today, as Venus moves into your adventure zone, you may be involved with travel plans, legal manoeuvres, higher education or perhaps studying to learn a new skill. You may be giving extra serious thought to your career plans so that you can make way for success.

GEMINI May 22 - June 21

LIBRA September 24 - October 23

AQUARIUS January 21 - February 19

There may be lots of lively talk in the air, and affairs of the heart may grow stronger. It’s a day and evening of social possibilities - and don’t exclude the opportunity to entertain back at your place now that Venus has just moved into your home zone. If you want to play host, then invite a few folks over, but don’t get too serious about a relationship.

Health issues may surface causing you to slow down and take it easy. The main problem may be the all too familiar stresses and strains of everyday life. If you can get to the bottom of any fears and anxieties, then you’ll feel so much better and may have more energy. If you have too much to do at once, then be strong and delegate some of it.

The grass may seem greener on the other side, so you may be itching for a change of scene. The focus is very much on travel and getting away from your usual environment. If you can’t currently go away, you may find a change of mental scenery just as refreshing, which you can achieve by reading an engrossing book or learning something new.

CANCER June 22 - July 22

SCORPIO October 24 - November 22

PISCES February 20 - March 20

It may be an emotional day, but mostly in a good way. A loving gesture from you to someone you care about may be deeply appreciated. You might also want to express any creative and artistic leanings, as doing so could bring about a sense of fulfilment deep inside. Try to hold back from any one off purchases of luxury items. If you can’t, remember to retain receipts.

As you shift mental gears you may find it more appealing to be alone with your thoughts. It may be time to get lost in a good book, a movie or a creative project. If business success is on your mind, let actions speak for themselves. Later, your social life may take some fresh, exciting or unsettling turns. Whatever happens, it won’t be dull.

If you haven’t been able to find workable solutions to recent dilemmas, then you may find it easier to do so today. As Venus moves into your opposite sign of Virgo, it touches your relationships with added sweetness making it easier to compromise and negotiate. You can make good headway through discussion - but make time for fun too.

Sport Murray blows off cobwebs on his return to Tokyo Open

JENSON Button will have to serve a five-place grid penalty at this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix after McLaren were forced to change the gearbox on his car. Button’s team-mate Lewis Hamilton, who last week revealed he will drive for Mercedes in 2013, retired from the last race in Singapore with a gearbox issue. Button went on to finish second, but when the team looked over his car they found it had the same problem that had curtailed Hamilton’s race. Drivers are required to use the same gearbox for five races, any unscheduled changes are punished by a grid penalty. Although the gearbox on Hamilton’s car has also been changed, he does not serve a penalty as the problem caused him to retire in Singapore.

Defeats Karlovic to set up clash with Lacko today ANDY Murray reached the second round of the Japan Open with a straight-sets win over Ivo Karlovic in his first match since winning the US Open. Karlovic entered the tournament as a lucky loser after Murray’s scheduled first-round opponent Gael Monfils withdrew due to injury. Murray had won all four of his previous meetings with the giant Croatian competitor, most recently in four sets at Wimbledon this summer, and was rarely troubled as he made it five from five. The Scot failed to take any of his three break points in the first set, but eventually prevailed in a tie-break. The second set was progressing in a similarly servedominated manner until the 10th game, upon which Murray went up 0-40 to set up three match points. Karlovic saved two, the first with a second-serve ace, but Murray took the third to wrap up a 7-6 (9/7) 6-4 win having not faced a single break point in the match. He was to face Lukas Lacko in the second round this morning after the Slovakian hammered Spain’s Albert Ramos to capture a 6-0 6-2 win on Monday. Among yesterday’s other matches, fifth seed Nicolas

IN BRIEF Button to serve grid penalty

Andy Murray recorded a straight-sets victory over Ivo Karlovic at the Japan Open yesterday, in his first tennis match since winning the US Open. The Scot faces Lukas Lacko in the second round this morning Almagro was a first-round casualty as Japan’s Tatsuma Ito claimed a notable scalp to delight the home crowd. The first set went to a tiebreak after a final Ito service game which continued for almost 10 minutes after first reaching deuce. The home player had saved six break points up to that stage and made Almagro pay by taking the set in the breaker. The second set also went the distance, with Ito repeating the dose to win 7-6 (7/4) 7-6 (7/5). Fellow seed Milos Raonic

and Kei Nishikori progressed safely through, though. A single break in each set was enough for sixth seed Raonic to power past Czech Radek Stepanek 6-4 6-4 while Nishikori, seeded eighth, won his all-Japanese clash with Go Soeda 4-6 6-2 6-3. Raonic will face Tommy Robredo in the next round after the Spaniard beat Jarkko Nieminen 6-2 6-4, while Dmitry Tursunov saw off young Australian Bernard Tomic 6-4 7-5 to set up an encounter against Ito. Meanwhile, Cyprus’ Mar-

cos Baghdatis returned to action with a victory over Ukrainian qualifier Sergiy Stakhovsky 7-6(3), 7-5 in Tokyo yesterday. This was the first match for the Cypriot since losing to another Ukrainian, Alexandr Dolgopolov, in the second round of the US Open. Baghdatis is currently ranked 46th at the South African Airways ATP Rankings, after recording a 10-spot drop over the last week. The 27-year-old is next set to take on the winner of today’s encounter between fourth-seeded Argentinean

Juan Monaco and Bulgarian qualifier Grigor Dimitrov. This is Baghdatis’ third appearance at the hard court tournament in Tokyo, the highlight of which was reaching the quarter finals on his debut in 2005 when he lost to Croatian Mario Ancic. In the Japan Open’s remaining matches yesterday, Alejandro Falla beat Thomaz Bellucci 7-5 6-2, Jeremy Chardy eased past home wild card Yuichi Sugita 6-1 7-5 and Marco Chiudinelli beat Martin Klizan 7-6 (7/3) 6-2.

Olazabal revels in Ryder fightback EUROPEAN captain Jose Maria Olazabal hailed his team’s Ryder Cup comeback as “extraordinary” as he claimed the drama of the final day of competition made him feel “alive”. The European team came from 10-4 down at one point, and 10-6 down going into the singles matches, to clinch a remarkable win at Medinah by 14 1/2 points to 13 1/2. Olazabal told a press conference at Heathrow: “(Being captain) is difficult, in a way it’s torture. “It’s really tough on your nerves, but that’s the beauty of the Ryder Cup. It’s a huge adrenaline flow and that’s what we live for to be honest - the pressure, the tension the adrenaline flow makes us feel alive.” The Spaniard added: “I don’t know if it’s (the comeback) a miracle, but it’s something extraordinary to be honest. “We haven’t seen that before. “What the players achieved that day was just amazing. It’s up to you to decide if it’s the greatest moment or the greatest

comeback in history, but they (the players) deserve all the credit.” Olazabal added: “We have this wonderful trophy here with us because of the huge achievement of those 12 men. They didn’t stop believing and the performance they showed on Sunday was just incredible.” The captain has been inundated by messages of congratulation from the likes of Rafael Nadal and also the King of Spain. “He was, like me, pretty much over the moon,” said Olazabal. “That was a nice one.” Olazabal confirmed he would not be looking to take on the captaincy again, saying: “I can assure you that’s going to be a no, period.” He claimed there were plenty of other worthy candidates, pointing to the likes of Darren Clarke, Paul McGinley, Thomas Bjorn, Paul Lawrie, Lee Westwood and Padraig Harrington. “It would be unfair of me to just name one for the next Ryder Cup,” he said. “All of them deserve that position.”

Nadal to play in Abu Dhabi RAFAEL Nadal has entered the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in December as he seeks to prove his fitness ahead of the Australian Open. World number four Nadal has not played since his shock defeat to Lukas Rosol at Wimbledon in June due to a knee injury. He admitted recently the problem may keep him out of next season’s first major in Melbourne in January but he has nevertheless put his name down for the exhibition event from December 2729 in Abu Dhabi. Last year’s winner Novak Djokovic and US Open champion Andy Murray have also committed to playing.

Boxing debut in Glasgow

Olazabal confirmed he would not be looking to take on the Ryder Cup captaincy of the European team again

FOLLOWING its debut at the London Olympics in August, women’s boxing has been included in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the sports organisers said. The Commonwealth Games Federation had made the decision at their general assembly meeting in Uganda shortly after the London Games, the International Boxing Association (AIBA) said. It will be the first time women’s boxing has been included in the Games.

APOEL stay unbeaten after Apollon clash By Nemanja Bjedov APOEL’s coach Ivan Jovanovic was pleased with his team’s 1-0 victory over Apollon Limassol in the fourth round of the national championship on Sunday afternoon at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia. “This was a match with a high pace, and usually a team whose players are more focused wins at the end,” said Jovanovic. “I believe we won the match fairly, although we were not at our best throughout the match. It was very important for us to get all three points here, especially because Apollon were under pressure to get a result and we struggled with our injury problems.” The only goal of the match came 11 minutes from time when Paraguayan striker Aldo Adorno scored his seventh goal this season. “The great support from our fans translated into positive energy on the pitch and that was a great help,” added Jovanovic. “We were passionate and wanted to win more than our opponents on the day. I want to

congratulate our players on their effort as there will be matches when the score will not be in our favour, but today they showed character and were patient until we eventually prevailed.”

TOP OF LEAGUE Following their win, APOEL remain top of the league rankings with 12 points, while AEK are currently second with the identical number of points but with an inferior goal difference. The Larnaca side is the only unbeaten team apart from APOEL, and over the weekend they celebrated a narrow 1-0 victory over Olympiakos Nicosia. Anorthosis are third with 10 points after a convincing 3-0 victory over Alki, thanks to two goals by Brazilian midfielder Juliano Spadacio, while AEL and Omonia are fourth and fifth respectively, after playing out a 1-1 draw over the weekend. “We did not start the match the way we wanted to as we had problems imposing our style of play on them. To make things worse, we conceded

a goal, but we managed to stay calm and eventually levelled the score,” assessed AEL’s coach Pambos Christodoulou. Luciano Bebe scored his first goal of the season in 23rd minute to cancel out Freddy’s 11th-minute opener. “After an open first half, I think we were closer to finding a winner in the second half. Unfortunately, we did not manage to win and I am certainly not happy to share a point, but life goes on and we now have the next challenge to prepare for,” concluded Christodoulou, whose team travels to France where they will take on Olympique de Marseille in the second round of the UEFA Europa League Group C tomorrow evening. Elsewhere in Round 4, Enosis Neon Paralimni beat Doxa Katokopia 1-0, with Carlos Milhazes converting a penalty kick four minutes from time, while AEP Paphos trounced Ayia Napa 3-0. Cape Verde international Pedro Moreira scored two minutes into injury time to help Nea Salamina carve out a 1-1 draw away to Ethnikos Achnas.

APOEL’s Adorno (R) scored the only goal against Apollon, which was enough to seal victory for the Nicosia side

Eto’o return confirmed with squad place

Guinazu is certain Brazil will not underestimate Argentina

SAMUEL Eto’o’s return to the Cameroon national football team was confirmed yesterday when the midfielder was named in a revamped squad for the decisive African Nations Cup qualifier against the Cape Verde Islands. Eto’o had refused to play in the first leg of the tie after labelling the set-up around the team amateurish and last year led a boycott of a friendly in Algeria in a row over unpaid bonuses. The four-times African Footballer of the Year said last week he had decided to make himself available for the national side again following a meeting with Prime Minister Philemon Yang. Eto’o appeared on a list of 26 players for the October 14 match in Yaounde, the first game in charge for coach Jean Paul Akono, who replaced Frenchman Denis Lavagne after his removal following the 2-0 first-leg defeat in Praia last month. The aggregate winners of the tie will qualify for the 2013 Nations Cup in South Africa. Also included are veteran full back Pierre Wome, midfielder Jean Makoun, who had boycotted the team alongside Eto’o, and former French junior international Jean Armel Kana Biyik of Stade Rennes, whose father Andre was an influential member of the Cameroon team that reached the 1990 World Cup quarter-finals. “My first major challenge was to bring back some very key players who suspended their participation in the national team and reconcile them to restore calm and serenity ahead of this major encounter,” Akono said. “The second major challenge will be to win the crucial game by scoring at least three goals and conceding nothing.”

‘Brazil’s players know we play good football’ ARGENTINA midfielder Pablo Guinazu is sure archrivals Brazil will be wary of the threat posed by their great rivals in their upcoming friendly encounter in Resistencia. The second edition of the Superclasico de las Americas takes place tonight, with Brazil having enjoyed a 2-1 win in the first match two weeks ago. Both sides have selected only players who play in either Argentina or Brazil. Guinazu, who plays for Brazilian club Internacional, told Ole newspaper: “Brazil’s players are no fools and know we play good football, so they will pay attention. “Even though Brazil’s relationship with their fans is not the best at the moment, they are great players anyway.” Guinazu hailed Santos striker Neymar, who secured Brazil’s victory in the first leg with a last-gasp penalty. “Neymar is very dangerous, and so is (midfielder) Lucas. I see them playing in the Brazilian league. “They know how to play good football. We must be focused for 94 minutes. “The key to overcoming them is to give them no space to move. We are hopeful we can recover.” Striker Hernan Barcos, who plays for Palmeiras in Brazil, is determined to hold

Dangerous form: Brazil’s Neymar secured his side’s 2-1 victory over Argentina in the first leg of the Superclasico de las Americas with a last-gasp penalty on to his place in the Argentina squad for the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers, when more established Europe-based players return to the fold. Barcos said: “There are great forwards in the squad, important names, but in

each nomination and each training session I have to work hard. “I hope I can keep being here because it is a very nice experience,” Barcos told ESPN. Neymar, meanwhile, is anxiously waiting for the return

game against Argentina, having told reporters in Sao Paulo: “Playing Argentina is always different to other rivals because I always want to play against them.” Goalkeeper Jefferson added Mano Menezes’ Brazil do not need extra motivation

to play Argentina, adding: “Previews are not necessary. Atmosphere, emotion, motivation, everything is different. “I’m honoured by the captain’s armband. It has not happened suddenly, but is the result of hard work.”

Vaz Te urges West Ham to build on their promising start Queens Park Rangers chairman backs underfire boss Mark Hughes By Simon Peach RICARDO Vaz Te may be pleased with West Ham’s start to the season but knows it means nothing unless that form continues. The Hammers are back in the Premier League after a tumultuous season in the second tier from which they achieved promotion via the play-offs. Vaz Te was one of the key players in east Londoners’ promotion run and has helped them to a fine start to life back in the top flight. West Ham sit seventh in the standings after an impressive 2-1 victory at QPR Monday night, although the Portuguese is not getting carried away with things. “It is a great start but we just have to keep it going. I mean, we haven’t achieved anything,” Vaz Te said. “We have to make sure our objectives [are reached] and we have to make sure we don’t get carried away. “Week in and week out, we just have to make sure we keep on performing. “We haven’t won anything, we have not done anything. It has been what six or seven games? It means nothing so far.” Vaz Te was one of several impressive performers at Loftus Road last night and followed up Matt Jarvis’ early goal with an acrobatic second later in the first half. “Every win is a great win,” he said. “The main thing for us is getting the three points. “If it is a derby or not, it doesn’t really matter. It was special that is was away from home. That was the thing, getting the three points on the road. “Me scoring is just a bonus. My role in the team is slightly different this year. “Playing on the right my role is more to provide and create. I try to focus on that

Big-money West Ham acquisition Andy Carroll (centre), on loan from Liverpool, made a surprise appearance in the clash against ailing Queens Park Rangers on Monday night and the main thing is getting the three points. “If I score, it is a bonus. As long as the team wins and we get the three points that is the main thing.” It has been quite a year for Vaz Te, who 12 months ago was looking to prove himself at Barnsley after a frustrating few years after leaving Bolton. Now he is playing alongside the likes of big-money acquisitions Andy Carroll and Matt Jarvis, the attacker has to pinch himself.

“Oh, it is terrific,” Vaz Te said. “I am really overwhelmed to be part of the squad and be part of the 11 week in and week out. “To be around such great players you can only improve and I am trying to learn the best I can. “I am trying to get consistency in my performance and it is great to be part of such a tremendous squad.” QPR also boast an impressive-looking squad, although they have started the season without a win

in their first six league matches. Such alarming form has seen questions raised about the future of Mark Hughes, who has become the bookies’ favourite to become the first Premier League manager to leave their post this season. QPR chairman Tony Fernandes took to Twitter today in a bid to quash such talk and back the underfire Welshman. “Mark will sort it out,” he said. “Look at his record.

We would have won if we didn’t go down to 10. “I am relaxed and confident. Let’s get all our players back and in form and fit and then let’s see. Think of Spurs. “Keep calm. 6 games does not make a season. I have learnt from many wise chairman.” He added: “Don’t worry. I’m calm and want to build stability which is what most fans want. There are many out there who are clueless.”

Wenger: we want to put things right ARSENAL manager Arsene Wenger wants his side to make amends for Saturday’s defeat to Chelsea when the Gunners take on Olympiacos in the Champions League today. The north Londoners saw a successful start to the season abruptly halted at the weekend as they fell to a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal sit seven points shy of the Barclays Premier League leaders as a result, but attention now turns to their Champions League campaign. Wenger’s side takes on the Greek champions tomorrow and the Frenchman wants to see an improved performance in the Group B encounter. “The players are focused and disappointed that we lost the game,” the Arsenal manager said. “They are still down of course, but we have a Champions League game in front of us at

home and we want to put things right. “It is about how we respond. I am impressed by the mentality of my team, but the mentality is as well about how you respond to disappointment. “I am confident we will, but that is what we want to show tomorrow.” Arsenal will be hoping to make it two wins from two Group B games today, having returned from Montpellier with three points on matchday one. Olympiacos lost their opener at home to Schalke and Wenger knows today’s clash at the Emirates provides a chance to take a stranglehold on the group. “Olympiacos are already in a position where their backs are to the wall because they have lost at home and in this Champions League when you lose at home it is very difficult,” the Frenchman said. “They are highly motivated to know they have to give everything to make it through.”

City must improve quickly Mancini MANCHESTER City boss Roberto Mancini feels his team must improve quickly if they are to qualify for the Champions League knockout rounds - but believes they do have it in them to go on and win the competition. City, beaten 3-2 by Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in their Group D opener on September 18, are looking to get their European season kick-started today when they take on German champions Borussia Dortmund at the Etihad Stadium. With Dortmund having begun with a 1-0 win over Ajax, the pressure is on the Blues to secure all three points if they are to avoid a repeat of their maiden Champions League campaign last term, which ended in failure to qualify from another difficult group. While acknowledging the club are relatively inexperienced at this level, Mancini accepts there is a considerable weight of expectation on big-spending City to make major strides on the European stage, and he has stressed the importance of his players swiftly cutting out the kind of mistakes he felt allowed Real to come from behind to snatch victory against them. The Italian is optimistic, though, that if City do manage to up their game and make it beyond the group stage, there is no reason why they cannot then go all the way. “This is the second year for us in the Champions League and the second year that we got the worst group,” Mancini said. “Like we have improved (over the years) in the Premier League, we need time to improve in the Champions League, but we don’t have a lot of time - only five more games, and we need to improve quickly. “We need to not concede easy goals to drop points like we did against Real Madrid. If we want to go through, we need to improve very quickly.”

Van Persie double gives Manchester United easy win

Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie celebrate the latter’s goal last night (AFP)

MANCHESTER United striker Robin van Persie continued his hot scoring streak as his double secured a 2-1 victory over CFR Cluj in Champions League Group H last night. United had to come from behind after Pantelis Kapetanos fired the Romanian champions into a 14th minute lead. Van Persie equalised 15 minutes later when he met Wayne Rooney’s free kick and the ball looped off his shoulder and over keeper Mario Felgueiras. There was nothing fortunate about his second goal four minutes after the break, the Dutch international showing a deft touch to flick another Rooney cross past Felgueiras. United, who failed to get out of their group last season, are well-placed

CFR Cluj 1 Man United 2 to advance this time with two wins from two. The Premier League side had kept clean sheets in seven of their last nine away games in the competition but manager Alex Ferguson voiced defensive concerns after his side conceded three in losing to Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Saturday. His worries appeared valid when Cluj, who beat Braga in their opening game, took the lead. A crossfield pass found Modou Sougou on the right and he easily brushed aside Patrice Evra and

crossed for Greek international Kapetanos to net. The lively Sougou went off injured midway through the first half and United, without experienced midfielders Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick and Paul Scholes but fielding the attacking trio of Rooney, Van Persie and Javier Hernandez, gained momentum. Van Persie levelled and then saw Felgueiras block another shot before Rooney glanced a header wide. United’s second goal appeared to knock the stuffing out of Cluj but Spanish keeper David de Gea came to his side’s rescue at the end when he beat away Rafael Bastos’ header. Van Persie has scored seven times for United since joining from Arsenal just before the start of the season.

Late gains calm defending champions’ starting jitters Chelsea score three times in final 11 minutes to secure victory in Norway Nordsjaelland 0 Chelsea 4 By Ben Rumsby

I

N THE end, it was a walk in the Parken as Chelsea scored three times in the final 11 minutes last night to get their Champions League defence up and running in earnest against Nordsjaelland. Juan Mata continued his amazing recent form with his third goal in three games but it took a superb freekick from David Luiz to open the floodgates as Mata and Ramires sent the European champions top of Group E. Before that, there were as many questions as answers at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen as Chelsea almost let another lead slip two weeks after blowing a two-goal advantage to draw their opening match against Juventus. Frank Lampard returned to the starting XI for the first time since then, captaining the side in the absence of the rested John Terry. The 34-year-old cleverly set up Mata’s opener and led the visitors well, although doubts remain over whether he could form an effective midfield shield with either Ramires or John Obi Mikel. It was almost exactly a year since the first cracks in Lampard’s relationship with former manager Andre Villas-Boas began to emerge after his game time was similarly rationed. But, unlike 12 months ago, there was no visible sign of disaffection from the England star tonight, with Rob-

Juan Mata (foreground) vies for the ball with FC Nordsjaelland midfielder Mikkel Beckmann erto Di Matteo proving a far better diplomat than his predecessor. Lampard’s recall made perfect sense against a team Chelsea were expected to beat almost regardless of selection and tactics. The gulf between the sides was further emphasised by the fact Nordsjaelland were unable to get anywhere near selling out what was arguably the biggest match in their short history, having switched their Champions League matches to the na-

tional stadium. Di Matteo last night described this game as Chelsea’s biggest of the group and they certainly started as if they meant business, Jores Okore hitting his own post clearing Oscar’s cross, with Victor Moses poised to nod home. Fernando Torres also made a hash of beating the last defender after a lucky break and Lampard sent Mata’s cross over the bar. Sloppiness soon crept in as Nordsjaelland, whose

possession game soon got going, had a couple of sighters before a desperate lunge from Ashley Cole prevented Kaspar Lorentzen turning in John’s cross. Nordsjaelland continued to make errors, one from Ivan Runje playing in Torres, who fired at the legs of Jesper Hansen. And it was a mistake Chelsea punished ruthlessly in the 33rd minute, Torres robbing Enoch Adu and finding Lampard, who showed great vision in feeding Mata to

slot home. Nordsjaelland continued to play as if they had nothing to lose but Torres should have put them in their place a minute before the break when he shot straight at Hansen after being put clean through by Oscar. It was a similar story after the restart when the Spaniard was beaten to another Oscar ball by the goalkeeper but the first real shot came from John, who fired just wide after sidestepping Ramires.

Moses had the ball in the net moments later but the goal was rightly ruled out for his foul on Michael Parkhurst. Nordsjaelland then assumed total control as Mikkel Beckmann sent a looping header just over from Okore’s long ball, Petr Cech only parried Nicolai Stokholm’s swerving 25-yarder and Beckmann screwed Parkhurst’s cross wide. Chelsea withdrew Moses for Eden Hazard and Nordsjaelland sent on Mario Ticinovic for Nordstrand and it was the home side’s change which almost paid off when Cech brilliantly saved John’s curler onto the post and Cole was on hand to block Beckmann’s rebound. The visitors hit back and Runje was lucky to see only yellow for a shocking tackle on Ramires, Oscar lashing the ball home after the whistle had gone. Mata wasted the free-kick but when Chelsea got another 11 minutes from time, Luiz swerving a vicious shot in off the inside of the near post. It was game over three minutes later when the champions’ best move of the match ended with a lucky break off a defender, with Mata stroking home. And there was still time for Ramires to put gloss on the scoreline by tapping home Oscar’s cross.
