YPRUS yesterday accused the troika of distorting information in a document purportedly summarising the island’s status vis a vis anti-money laundering (AML) measures by “drawing inferences” where none existed in the original reports. The original four-page summary, based on audits by the Council of Europe’s money-laundering watchdog Moneyval and by private auditors Deloitte, had been drawn up by international lenders prior to a Eurogoup meeting on May 13 to approve the ﬁrst tranche of the island’s €10 billion bailout programme. Yesterday the Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) said the summary did not give a synopsis of the main ﬁndings “but rather a description of the perceived weaknesses of the system, drawing inferences where none exist in the original reports.” “The lack of consultation with the authors of the reports and the failure to refer to any of the positive aspects mentioned therein, has resulted in erroneous and distorted conclusions in the media, especially the international press,” the CBC said in a statement. “A summary of the reports cannot be considered balanced if it omits to mention that they reveal a number of strengths both in the Cypriot AML

framework and in the effective implementation of customer due diligence by Cypriot banks.” The CBC said the authorities were in the process of providing a detailed response to the troika as well as to the Eurogroup. An independent audit of Cyprus’ implementation of AML measures was set as a precondition for an international bailout. Cyprus initially resisted the idea, arguing it had already been cleared in a prior assessment by Moneyval. The government later backed down and agreed to a fresh review, one by Moneyval and a parallel one by private auditor Deloitte. The summary said that between 2008 and 2010, Cypriot banks reported not a single suspicious transaction under antimoney laundering regulations, and ﬂagged only one in 2011 and “a few” in 2012. This despite Deloitte’s forensic analysis of sample customer transactions during its short investigation, identifying 29 potentially suspicious transactions during the last 12 months, none of which were reported by the Cypriot banks. However, the summary had failed to mention that the 29 potentially suspicious cases had been identiﬁed in an analysis of some 590,000 transactions, the CBC said in its statement.

Remains of Richard III found in an untidy grave THE remains of King Richard III, which were discovered under a city car park, were found in a hastily dug, untidy grave, researchers have revealed. Academics from the University of Leicester said the bones of the last Plantagenet king were placed in an odd position and the torso crammed in. He was casually placed in a badly-prepared grave, suggesting gravediggers were in a hurry to bury him or had little respect for the murdered king. The lozenge-shaped grave was too short to contain the body conventionally, and there is evidence to suggest his hands might have been tied when he was buried.

Researchers said someone is likely to have stood in the grave to receive the body, suggested by the fact the body is on one side rather than placed centrally. The ﬁndings were revealed as University of Leicester archaeologists published the ﬁrst peer-reviewed paper on the university-led archaeological Search for Richard III in the journal Antiquity. It comes after the announcement in February that archaeologists had discovered the monarch’s remains. It followed a three-week dig started in August at what was once the medieval Grey Friars church in Leicester - now a Leicester City Council car park.

There were no signs of a shroud or cofﬁn in Richard III’s grave, in stark contrast to other medieval graves found in the town which were the correct length and were dug neatly with vertical sides, academics said. This is in keeping with accounts from the medieval historian Polydore Vergil, who said Richard III was buried “without any pomp or solemn funeral”. The academic paper by the University of Leicester Archaeological Services, School of Archaeology and Ancient History, and Department of Genetics, is called “The king in the car park: new light on the death and burial of Richard III in the Grey Friars church, Leicester, in 1485”.

Cyprus also had a solid level of compliance on CDD across the sector and displayed strong compliance in the identification of customers, it said. “For international business, most customers are corporate entities and supporting documentation is obtained to confirm the identification of the customer, the directors and the owners. Although

some of these structures are complex and can involve legal entities in two or more jurisdictions, there was a consistency in the responses of the banks that they are required to, and do in practice, identify all relevant parties through all layers of these structures. “The assessors did not come upon any examples to suggest lack of understanding or weak compliance on this aspect.” In its statement, the CBC said there was no reference to or indication of systemic deﬁciencies and in contrast to the summary, the reports “indicate that the standard building blocks are in place, the AML preventive measures and procedures in banks are generally sound, and, generally, the banks have a high level of compliance with the statutory and regulatory requirements, which in some areas are more demanding than EU and international requirements. “Some weaknesses are identiﬁed in the reports, but the general picture

portrayed is not negative, something that is not reﬂected in the summary paper” “AML is a challenge for all the international community. There is no perfect system that can guarantee the complete elimination of money laundering risk, as shown in the evaluations of the AML framework of countries in the relevant Moneyval and FATF reports. In addition, it should be stressed that no benchmarking of the Cyprus AML audit results was carried out, as this was a unique, focused and exceptional evaluation procedure not carried out in other countries,” the CBC said. Echoing the CBC, a statement from the ﬁnance ministry said the nature and depth of the assessments done on Cyprus were “unique and have never been carried out in any other jurisdiction”. “The outcome of the assessments by the two institutions indicates a solid level of compliance across the sector,” the ministry said.

POLICE are investigating the attempted murder of a 39year-old Georgian woman in a shop in Ledra Street yesterday. The woman, who was stabbed in the back was taken to Nicosia General Hospital and operated on. Her condition is considered critical. According to a police spokesman a Kurdish man entered the shop she works in, at around 3.30pm, argued with her and allegedly stabbed her in the back. Witnesses at the scene told the Mail the woman, who was alone in the shop at the time, came out with blood dripping from her back and stumbled into the middle of the road, as her assailant ran off. “We had to take ﬁve scarves from my store to stop the bleeding,” a shop owner Alexandros Kozas, said. Reports claim the Kurdish man had been involved in a heated argument with the victim’s brother days earlier and had been punched in the face, leaving him with several broken teeth. According to Kozas, the suspect had visited the woman, who is believed to be of Armenian descent, on Wednesday demanding money to repair his broken teeth but had been turned away. Yesterday, he returned to the store, allegedly with a knife and plunged it into the woman’s back after she again refused to give him money. “They argued and when she refused to give him any money, he stabbed her in the back and ran off,” Kozas said. Police are still searching for the Kurdish man, who they said has had run-ins with the law before.

Efforts to keep provident fund haircuts as low as possible THE government will try to limit the losses of provident fund members to around 25 per cent of the amount they would have received before an EU decision to resolve one bank and raid deposits in the island’s biggest, the ﬁnance minister said yesterday. Workers’ provident funds have been affected by a Eurogroup decision to resolve Laiki, the island’s second-biggest, and recapitalise Bank of Cyprus by raiding customers’ de-

posits. The decision was part of a €10 billion bailout agreement with international lenders. In a letter to the House President, Finance Minister Harris Georgiades said that an amount will be given from the bailout to compensate provident funds with deposits in Laiki, which is being wound down. The aim is to keep their losses on the same level with those deposited in the Bank of Cyprus, which will undergo a so-called haircut

whose rate has not been ﬁnalised yet. Under the conditions of the bailout, uninsured deposits of over €100,000 could be cut by 60 per cent to ﬁnance the lender’s recapitalisation. Depositors will receive equity in exchange for their loss. The state will also provide additional compensation to those eligible, paid when they retired or in the event of death or total disability, the minister said. “The objec-

tive of the above actions is to limit the loss for affected members to 25 per cent of the amount each member would have received,” Georgiades said. Participation in the programme would be mandatory for provident funds in Laiki while those in the BoC would have a choice. Either participate in the scheme by handing over BoC shares of equal value or keep their shares and stay out.

Home Green light expected from cabinet for net metering By Elias Hazou THE CABINET IS today likely to green-light a governmentfunded programme subsidising net-metering for residences – a policy aimed at generating savings from electricity consumption, a big drain on households’ disposable income. Commerce minister Giorgos Lakkoktrypis will be issuing a decree to credit the Renewable Energy Sources (RES) fund with at least some €5m. The fund’s budget will be submitted to parliament for approval at a later date. The cash will be used to subsidise - to the tune of around 50 per cent - the installation of small photovoltaic (PV) systems in households.

The grants will be given based on income criteria, with eligible households selected from a list of financially vulnerable groups that has been drawn up by the ministries of commerce and labour and the energy regulator. Net metering is an electricity policy for consumers who own (generally small) renewable energy facilities, such as wind, solar power or home fuel cells. “Net,” in this context, is used in the sense of meaning “what remains after deductions” — in this case, the deduction of any energy outflows from metered energy inflows. Under net metering, a system owner receives retail credit for at least a portion of the electricity they generate. The programme is intended to cater to some 2,000 households with PV systems of a maximum output of 3 kilowatts, for a combined output of 6 megawatts. The cost of installing a typical PV system of up to 3kW is anywhere from €4,500 to €5,000. The

CYPRUS TODAY Christofias releases his financials FORMER President Demetris Christofias yesterday published his family’s accounts in a bid, as he said, to put paid to malicious rumours that members of his family are ultra-rich and that they transferred millions out of the country. The accounts, prepared by Kyprianides, Nicolaou & Associates Chartered Accountants, compare the revenues and expenditures, as well as the assets and liabilities, of Christofias and his wife Elsi on December 31, 2007 and December 31, 2012 – roughly the period spanning Christofias’ presidency. On December 31, 2012 the property of the couple was worth a total of €341,901, compared to €315,704 on December 31, 2007. By the end of 2012, however, they owed €200,000, bringing their net worth down to €141,901. The couple transferred to their son their residential apartment worth €484,980, and spent some €18,000 on their son’s studies. They also gifted €230,000 in cash to their two daughters. Their total combined earnings during the period in question amounted to €914,336, and expenses to €1,088, 139. Christofias’ net income (salary minus taxes and contributions to AKEL) at the end of 2012 came to €764,658 for the five years he was president. His spouse’s net earnings in the same period totalled €149,677. Christofias’ wife earns an income as a member of AKEL’s Central Committee. In 2010 Christofias collected a little over €46,000 from his provident fund, and in 2012 cashed in a life insurance policy getting some €12,000.

By Elias Hazou THE GOVERNMENT yesterday made much of the inclusion of a hypothetical gas pipeline from Cyprus to Greece as part of broader EU efforts for energy independence and security. During the European Council held earlier this week, President of the European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso delivered a presentation depicting a subsea pipeline running from Cyprus to Greece through Crete. The pipeline was featured on a map of the proposed Southern Corridor, which includes the Nabucco-West and TransAnatolian Pipeline as conduits bringing Azeri gas to the European continent. Barroso noted that during the Council’s discussion on energy matters he stressed the importance of hydrocarbon reserves in the Levantine Basin and Cyprus’ prospect of becoming a regional energy hub. Even if theoretical, it was the first official recognition of Cyprus as a possible conduit for gas to Europe, leading the government spokesman here to assert that “Cyprus is now on the energy map.” Most experts in the field agree that a mooted pipeline from the island to Greece would be hugely impractical and costly – if at all feasible – due to the long distances and the geology of the sea bed. But mere mention of a pipeline connecting south-east Mediterranean gas reserves

PVs will be connected to the grid of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC), and the ‘credit’ per household will be calculated every two months. Electricity consumption is offset by the electricity generated by PV system into the grid, with the household being billed for the difference. In addition to bringing down the electric bill, a positive side-effect is the lower consumption bracket and hence lower rates for electricity usage. Both this scheme and a subsequent one – covering some 3,000 more households, though without a subsidy – have the blessing of the energy regulator. Under a law passed last year, disbursements from the RES fund must have the approval of the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA). CERA chairman George Shammas said the electricity grid should easily be able to accommodate an extra 6MW, and did not foresee any technical issues.

Discussing gas at the House Commerce Committee to Europe via Greece, and not through Turkey, is significant in a political context. Cyprus’ official position so far has been against piping its potential gas reserves (and perhaps those of neighbouring countries) to Europe via Turkey. The issue has broader political ramifications that touch on efforts to resolve the decades-long conflict on the island. Some argue that piping Cypriot gas to Turkey would be a win-win for both sides. Turkey, which does not recognize the Republic of Cyprus, says the island’s hydrocarbon reserves belong to both communities and that Greek Cypriots cannot be allowed to exploit them unilaterally. But a great deal of confusion was caused here due to Anastasiades’ erroneous use of the term “southern corridor” during a press conference after the European Council. Anastasiades was at the time

not speaking of a pipeline, but rather of ship transport routes for the export of Mediterranean gas reserves using an LNG plant in Cyprus as a hub. His “southern corridor” comments were later reproduced by the media here. The matter was cleared up yesterday at a session of the House Commerce Committee by Charles Ellinas, chairman of the Cyprus National Hydrocarbons Company (CNHC). Ellinas explained to MPs that when one wants to describe LNG ship transport routes from Cyprus, one should preferably use the term “southeast Mediterranean corridor” to avoid confusion with the “Southern Corridor,” which refers to the Nabucco-West and Trans-Anatolian Pipeline. As Ellinas later told the Mail, efforts by Nicosia to get the EU to recognise this “southeast Mediterranean corridor” are far more important to Cyprus than an Israel-Cyprus-

(Christos Theodorides) Greece pipeline, which for the time being is “only an idea, for the long term.” Also yesterday, commerce minister Giorgos Lakkotrypis told MPs he hoped Cyprus and US ﬁrm Noble Energy – which has a concession on offshore block 12 – would “soon” conclude a memorandum of understanding for developing an LNG plant on the island. The MoU’s purpose would be to set up a joint venture between the CNHC and Noble. The joint venture would be a special-purpose vehicle seeking out investors for the LNG facility. It would relate to the construction of a single train at Vassilikos – the proposed site for an LNG terminal – for the processing of natural gas believed to lie within Block 12. More trains could subsequently be added to the plant in the event of further gas discoveries in Cypriot waters.

Kolakides withdraws on BoC MICHALIS Kolakides yesterday withdrew his interest for the CEO position at the Bank of Cyprus because of a disagreement over the duration of the contract, reports said. Kolakides had been selected by the BoC board on Wednesday but the final say on his appointment belonged to the Central Bank (CBC). Reports said Kolakides had asked for a medium term contract while the CBC said it could not offer anything beyond the few months it will take until the first general assembly of the lender’s new shareholders. The CBC could appoint Christos Christou, who was runner-up in the selection process. Christou had formerly worked for the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development. In March, the Eurogroup decided to resolve Cyprus’ second biggest bank Laiki and transfer part of its assets to BoC while financing BoC’s recapitalisation by taking a chunk of uninsured deposits – over €100,000. The affected depositors will receive equity in exchange and will decide on the lender’s new leadership after the restructure is complete in a couple of months or so allowing BoC to come out of administration. So far 37.5 per cent of uninsured deposits in BoC have been converted to equity, whereas an additional 22.5 per cent remains frozen until the conclusion of an independent valuation of the bank’s balance sheet after absorbing the ‘good’ Laiki.

RULING DISY tabled a proposal to the House Health Committee yesterday which would provide healthcare for all through a levy on wages. The proposal would mean all those currently registered with the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) would be able to receive free healthcare from both private and government employed doctors. Speaking after the committee meeting, MP Nicos Nouris, who handed over the plan, explained that funds would be raised by charging employers and employees both 0.4 per cent on their income, excluding civil servants who were due to start contributing 1.5 per cent of their income to healthcare under the deal with Cyprus’s international lenders. With the DISY proposal, parents would also have to contribute 0.4 per cent for each child or dependent in their care. Nouris added that from these charges, the amount of €59 million would be raised, which should cover the costs for first-rate healthcare for all. The continuing financial crisis, long waiting lists and the delay in implementation of the National Health Scheme (NHS) require measures to be taken to provide everyone with quality healthcare, Nouris said. The HIO would be responsible for the plan which would come into operation within the next six months. Residents would then only need to register with the HIO and would be entitled to free healthcare from a doctor of their choice. The plan would not bring any disagreement from the troika, Nouris said, as there would be no expenditure on behalf of the government. Doctors would receive payment directly from HIO’s funds. Speaking after the Committee meeting, Health Minister, Petros Petrides who was present, told reporters that it was a proposal which reflected the public’s current state of anguish. “We accept that it is a proposal which must be discussed extensively so the Committee can review any amendments as soon as possible,” Petrides said. ALL available EU resources will be mobilised as quickly and as effectively as possible in order to help Cyprus, European President José Manuel Barroso said yesterday. Barroso was speaking at a joint press briefing with President Nicos Anastasiades following a meeting they had in Brussels. The discussion, he said, focused on the very important challenges Cyprus faces. He further expressed his gratitude on Cyprus’ strong European commitment. Cyprus is, and stays, firmly anchored in the European Union, he said, pledging that the EU is “determined to stand by Cyprus and Cypriots in these extremely difficult times”. Anastasiades thanked Barroso for his interest and support and for his decision to establish a technical assistance support group in Cyprus so that the country’s economy could be revived and the necessary reforms implemented. Home Concern over packs of stray dogs roaming near Green Line By Peter Stevenson PACKS OF stray dogs are causing problems for both the residents and authorities in the capital but especially in municipalities bordering the buffer-zone. Ayios Dhometios, with municipality limits beginning at the Grammar School and ending at the central prisons, has one of the biggest problems in the Nicosia district with stray dogs, according to its Mayor, Costas Petrou. Commenting on a recent letter published in daily Phileleftheros from a resident of his municipality, complaining about a pack of stray dogs which killed one of her cats, Petrou said the matter was being investigated. “Municipality health services visited the lady’s home but unfortunately she was not home so we could not fully investigate the incident,” he said. “We spoke to one of her neighbours but

unfortunately he could not shed any light on the incident which allegedly took place at around 3am on Tuesday while he was asleep,” he added. Petrou explained that the house the woman lives in is not close to the buffer zone, where most stray dog sightings happen, and that she has two dogs and several cats. “Whether the strays were attracted to her dogs is a matter we will have to look into,” he said. With the fee to microchip and register dogs being between €20 and €50, many residents have not gone ahead with it, making the municipality’s job of returning stray dogs to their owners even harder, according to Petrou. “Once a dog is picked up by Municipality health services it is taken to a special shelter until we can either ﬁnd its owner or it is passed on to the Nicosia Dog Shelter which will deal with the dog,” he said. “If a dog has a microchip then he can be returned swiftly to his owner but in cases where dogs

have not been chipped, if we don’t ﬁnd the owner within a week the animal is handed over to another shelter,” he added. During municipality working hours there are patrols carried out by health service workers but that is not sufﬁcient to cover the problem, and residents are asked to contact police if they see any strays when the municipality is not operating. “We are trying our best to combat the problem but there is nothing to stop dogs from crossing the Green Line throughout the municipality,” Petrou said. “If there was barbed-wire or something blocking dogs from coming across the border then we wouldn’t have such a big problem,” he added. The Mayor told the Mail that he has contacted the UN to help with the problem, and despite carrying out their own patrols in the buffer-zone, the problem has not decreased.

Projects protect marine life and draw in tourists By Maria Gregoriou ARTIFICIAL reefs complete with sunken ships are to be created to enrich marine life and the underwater environment, manage fishing resources while also attracting locals and tourist to dive or snorkel. “The first artificial reef was completed in 2009 in the Amathounta sea area and we are continuing the project with the creation of reefs in sea areas of Famagusta, Limassol and Paphos,” an official from the department said. The official said such reefs are usually placed 35 to 40 metres from shore to protect sea life and must be in areas not prone to strong waves. “Technical studies have been run to see where the reefs are to be placed and how to prepare and clean the ships. When the project

is complete the ecosystem will be upgraded, divers will be attracted to the reefs, marine research can be conducted, and public awareness will be raised about protecting marine life,” said the official. The project is being financed to a great extent by the EU fisheries programme which has been running from 2007 and will continue to 2013. Funding for the first reef was supported by the programme. Contributions to the project will be made by the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) and the Cyprus association of divers. The budget has been set at €294,500 for the reef in Limassol, and €214,500 for Paphos. The Famagusta project will be set in Ayia Napa and Paralimni and both reefs have a separate estimated budget of €214,500. If everything goes to plan the projects will be complet-

THE TRIAL of the 62-yearold former policeman, Nicos Iordanous, who is accused of the premeditated murder of his 56-year-old wife Stavroulla has been postponed until September 17. The defendant allegedly shot his wife in the head with a shotgun at their flat in Aradippou on December 10 of last year. The Criminal Court, chaired yesterday by Haris Poyadjis in Larnaca revealed that due to its heavy workload with the Mari Naval Base disaster case and the Ayia Napa multiple murder trial the case would have to be postponed. The hearings for the case will take place on September 17, 18 and 26 and the court decided the defendant would remain in custody at the central prisons. The incident took place on December 10 of last year at around 10pm when Larnaca CID received reports that a gunshot had been heard at a flat in Aradippou with an unconscious person at the scene. Officers discovered Stavroulla Iordanous’ body on the couch in the living room. Police had reported she had been bleeding from a big wound at the back of her head and from her mouth. A shotgun was found on the floor while her husband had apparently passed out by the apartment’s entrance. Her death was confirmed at the scene while a post-mortem carried out by state-pathologists Sophocles Sophocleous and Nicolas Charalambous confirmed her death had been caused by a gun shot to the head. Iordanous had originally claimed his wife had shot herself, but police said the crime scene and in particular the positioning of the gun did not point to suicide.

Amnesty says detention ‘routine’ in Cyprus By Poly Pantelides AUTHORITIES continue locking up in poor conditions those migrants who enter the island illegally or whose asylum application is rejected, without considering any alternatives, Amnesty International has said. In its annual 2013 report looking back on the state of human rights in 2012, Amnesty International said in Cyprus, “irregular migrants, rejected asylum-seekers and certain categories of asylum-seekers were detained for prolonged periods.” “Detention appeared routine with no alternative measures being considered,” the report said. People were locked up in “poor conditions in unsuitable facilities, such as short-stay police cells and two wings of Nicosia Central Prison,” Amnesty International said. Earlier this year however, the purpose-built detention facility in Menoyia capable of holding 276 people was ﬁnally up and running. Nonetheless, inmates complained this March they were prohibited from using mobile phones while some of them claimed they were beaten and pepper sprayed by police, which authorities denied. Amnesty international’s report said it seemed “arbitrary, unnecessary and unlawful,” to detain people for immigration purposes even when they could not be deported. For example, Syrian nationals could not be sent back during their country’s internal armed conﬂict but were nonetheless held for “several months”. One Iranian man whose asylum application was rejected, was held for 14 months as there was no realistic prospect for his deportation, the report said. Majid Eazadi was repeatedly detained for deportation purposes between 2008 and 2011 despite the Ombudswoman’s repeated letters expressing concern. Eventually, the Supreme Court ordered his release in November, however Amnesty International said that Supreme Court judgements – ordering the release of individuals kept longer than the lawful six months in most cases – were not always respected. “Upon their release, those individuals were immediately re-detained on the same grounds as before.” Delegates for Amnesty International – an independent body funded by membership and donation but accepting no help from governments – visited Cyprus in June and October last year.

Cyprus and Russia deepen defence ties CYPRUS and Russia have agreed to deepen co-operation in defence matters, as Moscow requests facilities for Russian Navy vessels. Defence Minster Fotis Fotiou yesterday met his Russian counterpart Sergey Shoigu in Moscow, extending him an invitation for an ofﬁcial visit to the island in 2013. Shoigu has accepted the invitation. According to an ofﬁcial announcement, the meeting between the two Ministers was “constructive and productive”. The two sides agreed to update a Defence Co-operation Agreement and sign another agreement to facilitate Russian citizens in the case of emergency evacuation. Fotiou said Nicosia was ready to respond positively to Moscow’s request concerning the presence of its navy vessels in the region. Three Russian warships were docked in Cyprus over the weekend. They were part of Russia’s Mediterranean task force.

THE wife of a well known Paphos artist is opening up her late husband’s studio to the public for the last time. Proliﬁc artist David Lester died at 65 in October 2012, and his wife, Cathy, will open his studio to the public for the last time this month, to give people an opportunity to view his latest work and to purchase their favourites pieces. Lester took part in a number of exhibitions in Cyprus including the Kyklos gallery and En Plo. He is also the author of a published autobiography, Wishful thinking. David Lester’s distinctive and modern style saw him use a number of mediums for his paintings including watercolours and oils. He is best known for his abstract and semi abstract oil paintings which use bold and vibrant colours. Cyprus’ dramatic mountains and coastline ignited the artist’s imagination and often feature in Lester’s work. His paintings have made their way into collections across Europe. Although Lester spent most of his working life

in the education sector in the UK - before moving to Cyprus with his wife, he was the head teacher of a school in Cambridgeshire painting was always something which held a fascination for the artist. “David was mostly a self taught artist, although he attended a number of courses on the subject during his life, he liked to paint as he saw things,” said Cathy. Painting and art appreciation were David’s passions, along with jazz music.”

OPEN STUDIOS In the UK, he had exhibited at Bedford art gallery and at Newnham College, Langham Gallery and the Round Church Studios. Lester died at the Friends hospice in Paphos in October last year after a lengthy illness. The Paphos based artist was also one of the founding members of the successful Open Studios, which saw many artists open up their studios to the public for a few weeks every year. Cathy said she would love to see his paintings go to caring homes so she is opening up his studio

for the last time tomorrow and Sunday from 11am to 5pm. There are 70 paintings up for grabs, along with copies of Lester’s autobiography. Watercolours, framed and glazed are priced from €40 - €60, Oils, depending on size and framing from €100 - €400 and the book at €5. A percentage of the proceeds from the studio open day will go towards helping the Friends Hospice. “The hospice was wonderful and I wanted to be able to give something back to them,” said Cathy. The Hospice has recently been forced to scale down its operation due to the deepening economic crisis. The walls of the couples Peyia home are covered with the artist’s paintings and Cathy will keep these as they are. A few other works have been earmarked for the couples friends and family. “David always had difﬁculty in parting with his paintings as he wanted them to go to people who really appreciated them and not just to go with someone’s colour scheme,” said his wife. The disorder was sparked by a fatal police shooting on May 13. At least 30 cars were set ablaze across western and southern Stockholm early yesterday, police spokesman Kjell Lindgren said. Firefighters said they had “never before seen so many fires raging at the same time”. Rioting youths also burnt down a restaurant in Skogas, south of Stockholm. Lindgren says a 16-year-old girl was briefly detained on suspicion of preparing an arson attack, but was later sent home to her parents. The unrest began on Sunday in response to the shooting in which police killed a 69-year-old knifewielding man in the northwestern suburb of Husby.

Czech manhunt POLICE are searching for an American man suspected of killing four members of a family in the Czech Republic’s second-largest city Brno, police said yesterday. Police spokeswoman Petra Vedrova said the suspect, Kevin Dahlgren, may be armed and dangerous. Police had taken measures to stop him from leaving the country and were in contact with neighbouring states. The victims were a family, but Vedrova declined to give any further details.

Oil ban rethink THE European Commission has decided to tear up new rules on how restaurants should serve olive oil less than a week after unveiling them, following widespread ridicule and accusations of unwanted interference. UKRAINIAN Prime Minister Mykola Azarov backed down yesterday from his order to revoke the ofﬁcial accreditation of a dozen local reporters after they displayed slogans at a cabinet meeting to protest against an attack on two colleagues. The dour 65-year-old reacted sharply on Wednesday when the reporters displayed slogans demanding an investigation into the beating of two reporters at a political rally last Saturday. Azarov, who has headed the government since President Viktor Yanukovich came to power in February 2010, told aides to strip the journalists of their reporting rights so that they could no longer cover government meetings. But yesterday Azarov met the same journalists and adopted a softer tone. “You are welcome to attend cabinet meetings and I hope that this incident will be the last one,” he told them, according to a video released by the government. The mother of two, a Cub Scout leader from Cornwall, added: “Being a Cub leader I have my ﬁrst aid so when I saw this guy on the ﬂoor I thought it was an accident - then I saw the guy was dead and I could not feel any pulse. “And then when I went up there was this black guy with a revolver and a kitchen knife, he had what looked like butcher’s tools and he had a little axe, to cut the bones, and two large knives, and he said,

Rafsanjani has not made any direct public statements since the decision. The quote was not carried on his official website, and the report could not independently verified. Rafsanjani, a centrist, had revitalised reformist hopes. His campaign manager says he will not protest over the disqualification.

Niger killings ISLAMIST suicide bombers struck a barracks and a French-run uranium mine in Niger yesterday, officials said, killing 20 people and wounding dozens in attacks that showed armed unrest spreading across West Africa. In Agadez, the largest town in northern Niger, at least 20 soldiers were killed and 16 injured when suicide bombers attacked a barracks at dawn, Defence Minister Mahamadou Karidjo told state radio. Three Islamists were also killed. After a fierce gunbattle, security forces returned the town to calm but one attacker was still holding soldiers hostage, military sources and local officials said. Further north in Arlit, at least 14 civilians were injured and two Islamists killed in a car bomb attack at the Somair uranium mine operated by run by French nuclear group Areva, the minister said.

Hairy moment It’s not unusual for a cat to get a hairball, but a 180kg tiger needed help from vets when he could not cough up a footballsized fur lump by himself. The 17-year-old tiger named Ty underwent surgery at a veterinary centre in the Tampa Bay community of Clearwater, Florida, where doctors said they safely removed the 1.8kg obstruction from his stomach. The tiger, cared for by Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation in Florida, was brought to vets after not eating for nearly two weeks. Doctors said they detected the hairball using a scope with a camera.

Romero beatification discussed THE president of El Salvador met Pope Francis yesterday to urge his fellow Latin American to put Archbishop Oscar Romero, who was murdered by a right-wing death squad in 1980, on the road to Roman Catholic sainthood. The sainthood process for Romero was effectively stalled under former popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI because they saw him as too close to Liberation Theology, a radical movement which emphasised helping the poor and opposing injustice. President Mauricio Funes said before leaving for Rome the main purpose of his visit was to appeal to the pope to move forward with Romero’s beatiﬁcation, the penultimate step before sainthood.

Romero, the Archbishop of San Salvador, was shot dead on March 24, 1980, as he celebrated mass in a hospital chapel. The murder was one of the most shocking of the conﬂict between a series of US-backed governments and leftist rebels in which thousands of people were killed by right-wing and military death squads. No one was ever brought to justice for the murder although former army major Roberto D’Aubisson, who died in 1992, is generally believed to have been behind it. Previous right-wing Salvadorean governments frowned on the possibility that Romero, an icon for Latin American liberation movements, could become a saint. But the leftist

However, that prospect seems unlikely as North Korea has repeatedly said it will not abandon nuclear weapons while the United States insists North Korea must take meaningful steps on denuclearisation before there can be talks. The visit to Beijing by Choe Ryong-hae, a top North Korean military ofﬁcer, is the most high-level contact between North Korea and China in about six months. Ties have been hurt between the two supposed allies by the North’s third nuclear test in February, despite China’s disapproval, and by China agreeing to UN sanctions on the North in response and starting to put a squeeze on North Korean banks. The US and its allies believe the North violated a 2005 aidfor-denuclearisation deal by conducting a nuclear test in 2006 and pursuing a uranium enrichment programme that would give it a second path to a nuclear weapon in addition to its plutonium-based programme. Six-party aid-for-disarmament talks, involving the two Koreas, the United States, Japan, Russia and host China, collapsed in 2008 when the North walked away from the deal. Repeated attempts by China to get North Korea to embark upon Chinese-style economic reforms and shift attention away from the military and bellicose actions have made little apparent progress.

Japanese octogenarian becomes oldest to reach Everest summit

EIGHTY-year-old Japanese mountaineer Yuichiro Miura has become the oldest man to reach the top of Mount Everest. Miura, who also conquered the 29,035ft peak when he was 70 and 75, reached the summit at 9.05am local time yesterday, according to his support team in Tokyo. Miura called them from the summit to report the news. Nepalese mountaineering ofﬁcial Gyanendra Shrestha, at Everest base camp, conﬁrmed that Miura had reached the summit, making him the

oldest person to do so. The previous age record holder was Nepal’s Min Bahadur Sherchan, who accomplished the feat at 76 in 2008. Sherchan, now 81, was preparing for his own attempt on the summit next week. Miura and his son Gota called the support team from the summit to report the news. Public broadcaster NHK showed footage of Miura’s daughter Emili talking with them via speaker phone in Tokyo, clapping when her brother told her

they had reached the top. “This is the world’s best feeling,” Miura said. “I’m also totally exhausted.” The climbers planned to stay around the summit for about half an hour, take photos and then start to descend, Miura’s Tokyo ofﬁce said. Bush, had called a global war on terror after the September 11, 2001, attacks. “Our nation is still threatened by terrorists,” Obama said at Washington’s National Defence University. “We must recognise however, that the threat has shifted and evolved from the one that came to our shores on 9/11.” Faced with criticism about the morality of using unmanned aerial vehicles to wage war in distant lands, Obama said the United States will only use drone strikes when a threat is imminent, a nuanced change from the previous policy of launching strikes against a signiﬁcant threat. “To say a military tactic is legal, or even effective, is not to say it is wise or moral in every instance,” Obama said.

‘Congo has best chance for peace’ EASTERN Congo has the best chance in years to secure a lasting peace but the United Nations stands ready to pacify the region by force if need be, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said yesterday. Fighting that erupted on Monday near Goma, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo’s largest city, has killed at least 20 people and ended an uneasy six-month calm between the army and fighters from the M23 rebel group. “We have the best chance in many years to bring peace, stability and development to this country and this region,” Ban said on a visit to Goma with World Bank President Jim Yong Kim. A day earlier, the bank announced it would provide $1 billion to help finance health and education services, hydro-electric projects and cross-border trade aimed at fostering development and peace in the conflict-ridden Great Lakes region. EUROPEAN Union lawmakers voted yesterday to limit the scope of a proposed freetrade deal between Europe and the United States, backing French demands to leave out culture and potentially irritating Washington. The European Parliament, which can veto EU trade accords, voted 460 in favour and 105 against with 28 abstentions to limit Brussels’ room for manoeuvre in talks on a deal that would encompass almost half the world’s economic output. “It is crucial not to consider culture as a pure commodity,” said Helga Truepel, a member of the parliament from the German Greens party. Although non-binding, the parliament’s vote provides support for French demands to exclude the cultural sector from a deal. It will likely establish the parameters of the EU’s negotiating mandate, which will be finalised on June 14. EU-US negotiations are expected to start in July and to take two years. Washington and Brussels say the broadest deal possible is the best way to unleash billions of dollars in new business, and EU trade chief Karel De Gucht told lawmakers in the parliament on Wednesday that he needs flexibility to win US concessions. US lawmakers say they will not support a deal unless it tears down barriers that have long blocked US exports. One US official said the talks risked “death by a thousand cuts” if a policy of tit-for-tat exemptions were to take over. BRITAIN’S better-than-expected economic growth in the first quarter turns out to have been boosted by a rise in inventories, while consumer spending was weak and investment fell, raising questions whether the nascent recovery will last. Britain avoided falling back into recession when official data, first released in April, showed its economy grew 0.3 per cent between January and March from the previous quarter. The Office for National Statistics confirmed the headline number yesterday and said growth was 0.6 per cent higher than a year earlier, also in line with the preliminary figure. Economists expressed disappointment at the weak underlying picture of the economy from the new details. “The breakdown of the data is rather disappointing and not that supportive to hopes that the economy is establishing a firmer footing,” said Howard Archer, economist at IHS Global Insight. “There were declines in investment and exports, which hardly points to an economy rebalancing. Meanwhile, government spending was flat as spending cuts likely increasingly impacted.” Britain’s government has fended off calls to spend more to boost growth three years into its drive to close one of the European Union’s biggest budget deficits. On an unaligned basis, inventories added 0.2 percentage points to growth. “There is still a significant part of the inventories move that might reflect an unwanted build-up of stocks that will be a downside to growth going forward,” said David Tinsley, an economist at BNP Paribas. A 0.8 per cent fall in exports outweighed a 0.5 per cent drop in imports, so that net trade dragged on the economy. Britain is struggling to rebalance its output towards goods exports after it was punished during the financial crisis by its reliance on sectors such as banking. Giving more ammunition to opponents of a settlement THE DINNER for President Anastasiades and Dervis Eroglu that would be hosted by the UN Secretary-General’s special representative Alexander Downer will go ahead as planned even though the date has reportedly been switched to May 30. It will supposedly maintain its social character, as Anastasiades had demanded in the letter he sent to Ban Kimoon last Friday. In his letter the president complained that Downer had tried to turn the dinner into a political event despite having given assurances to the contrary. He felt that Downer’s associates “had leaked to unauthorised individuals inaccurate information, with the result of the undermining of our credibility and the creation of the mistaken impression about the resumption of the peace talks.” There has been no official explanation about the inaccurate information that was leaked. A press report claimed the straw that broke the camel’s back was the UN’s request to be informed whether the Greek Cypriot negotiator would attend the dinner despite knowing that Anastasiades had no intention of appointing one at this time. Perhaps we are unaware of the intricacies of dinner diplomacy, but for the layman this seemed like the proverbial storm in a tea-cup. Perhaps there were other goings-on that were not specified in the letter, but even if there were, they could not justify the kneejerk reaction and brash tone of the letter. The strange thing was that Anastasiades had always enjoyed a very good relationship with Downer, meeting regularly with him and never participating in the concerted attacks on the Australian by all other parties and leaders. Did he feel obliged to adopt a more confrontational approach now he was president, or was he trying to keep his rejectionist alliance partners happy? His angry reaction may have had something to do with the revelations that he was in possession of a 77-page UN document, listing the convergences and divergences of the talks, about which he had kept the National Council in the dark. Perhaps he thought that sending an angry letter was the best way to shift public attention away from this omission, which the opposition parties took exception to. This would also explain why he made his letter public on the very same day he sent it, probably before anyone at the UN headquarters had read it. Making the letter public gave the impression he was playing to the gallery rather than voicing legitimate concerns. If he had concerns these should have been conveyed to Ban in a confidential letter. By going public, he sparked another bout of Downer-bashing by the political parties and calls for the Australian’s replacement. While this will not happen, after the four years of work Downer and his team had put into the peace efforts, all the president’s letter achieved was to give more ammunition to the campaign of opponents of a settlement.

N MOSCOW, they are “non-Soviet Russians.” In New Delhi, they are a “political Goliath” that may soon awake. In Beijing and São Paolo, they are lawyers and other professionals who complain about glacial government bureaucracies and endemic graft. Prosperity is spreading in many emerging market nations, but political change is not. Economic liberalisation has sparked vast economic changes in the BRIC nations - China, India, Russia and Brazil. A middle class that was once made up of government servants is now dominated by private-sector employees. At the same time, government institutions that once provided the basics of life - education, healthcare and employment - are crumbling. Frustrated members of the middle class are demanding change, but traditional power holders, from Russia’s Vladimir Putin to India’s large political parties, remain entrenched. For middle-class Russians, economic power has not brought political power. “They want modernisation,” a Russian analyst who asked not to be named, said in a recent interview in Moscow. “They want to be respected by the outside world.” The dynamic in each country is different, but Moscow’s middle class is one example. Employed by private companies and financially self-sufficient, they are the winners of economic globalization. From software engineers to interior designers, they prefer international brands and travelling in Europe, and are closely connected to global events and culture through the Web. Disappointed with stateprovided healthcare and education, they are launching their own organisations to fill the gap. Maria Lipman, a scholar in residence at the Carnegie Centre Moscow, described the group as “achievers” who “believe in charity, just like their counterparts in Europe.” “I like to describe them as non-Soviet Russians,” she added. “They do not share the traditional Russian mentality of state paternalism.” Last year, tens of thousands of members of Moscow’s middle class took to the streets to protest Putin’s disputed reelection. The protesters themselves were surprised by the size of the turnout, according to Lipman and the Russian analyst who asked not to be named. “Suddenly, they woke up to politics,” she said. But a crucial dynamic limited their effectiveness.

Whether Putin can retain power past the end of his term in 2016 is unclear, but many members of Moscow’s middle class are increasingly focused on leaving Russia - not changing it. “The reason they are contemplating getting out is

this utter lack of protection,” said the analyst. “’I’m fine now, but if I’ve got some conflict with the authorities I’ll be thrown in jail.’ The judicial system is politicised and corrupt.” India’s growing middle class has also shown signs of a political awakening. Last year, hundreds of thousands of members of the country’s burgeoning middle class ended a decade of apathy and protested corruption for the first time. So far they appear to have largely failed to break the hold of the dominant political parties, which primarily serve India’s ultra-rich and rural poor. Nationwide elections scheduled for 2014 will show if India’s middle class can gain more political clout.

In Brazil, explosive growth in the urban middle class has largely failed to break the hold of entrenched political parties that are widely regarded as corrupt. Middleclass Brazilians applaud the efforts of President Dilma Rousseff to reform the government but still question whether she can succeed. In an interview in São Paolo last fall, Denis Dias, a lawyer for an energy company and the ﬁrst person in his family to go to college, said Brazilians pay tax rates that rival those of Western Europe but do not receive commensurate services. “People are getting really disappointed,” he said, “because it doesn’t achieve results.” At an IKEA store in Beijing 18 months ago, members of China’s middle class expressed frustration as well. In separate interviews, a banker, an accountant and an interior designer complained about spiralling housing prices, inequality and government corruption. They also criticised the government’s blocking of Facebook, Twitter, You Tube and other websites. A 37-year-old software developer for Ali Baba, China’s equivalent of Amazon, was the most negative. Despite being enormously successful in China, he said he was applying for a Canadian visa because pollution and poor schools were harming his 18month-old son. “They teach children to tell lies,” said the man, who asked not to be named. “They teach bad values.” This middle-class activism may be spreading. Last week in Pakistan’s national elections, anger at corruption and poor government services brought 40 million new voters to the polls and produced a record 60 per cent turnout. Protest movements are electrifying, but the biggest threat to entrenched power holders remains an organised, disciplined and politically potent opposition. Russian and Chinese leaders have been ruthless in keeping one from taking shape. Indian and Brazilian politicians use more subtle means to maintain their hold on power. Until members of the new BRIC middle classes embrace the ugly, but necessary, world of politics, however, Putin and the other entrenched elites will have little to fear. TV bosses have finally confirmed that Sharon Osbourne will return to The X Factor judging panel to replace Tulisa Contostavlos. She will join Louis Walsh, Gary Barlow and Nicole Scherzinger - who have all signed up - on the ITV series when it comes to back to screens later this year. Sharon, last on the show as a judge six years ago, had been widely expected to return after it emerged she had been in negotiation with programme chiefs. She said she “couldn’t be happier” about her comeback. The line-up announcement means show boss Simon Cowell will be absent for a third year. His departure coincided with a ratings tumble for the show which was last year regularly beaten by BBC One rival Strictly Come Dancing on Saturday nights. The 24-year-old singer, who has previously owned a pitbull, got the dog from Los Angeles-based breeders Shrinkabulls, which has helped a number of high proﬁle stars including Cher Lloyd, Joe Jonas and Randy Jackson adopt bulldog puppies in the past. Chris was spotted getting close to his model ex-girlfriend Karrueche Tran at the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas over the weekend.

Fish oil ‘may lower diabetes risk’ FISH oil capsules might help in the fight against diabetes, according to new research. A study has shown that the widely-used supplements, also known as omega 3 fatty acids, give a modest boost to levels of a hormone known as adiponectin in the bloodstream. The hormone helps the body regulate glucose and control inflammation. Long-term studies have also shown higher levels of adiponectin are associated with lower risks of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Research accepted for publication in the Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism analysed the findings from 14 clinical trials. The results showed that the effect of fish oil on adiponectin levels differed “substantially” across the trials,

suggesting that the supplements could have a stronger inﬂuence on some populations and a weaker effect on others, according to the authors.

Eating iodine in pregnancy leads to cleverer kids

Calcium can help women live longer

PREGNANT women and those planning to have children should ensure adequate iodine intake, according to the authors of a new report. Lack of iodine, for which good dietary sources are milk, dairy products and fish, can lead to reduced mental development in their children, the study found. Iodine is essential for producing the hormones made by the thyroid gland, which have a direct effect on foetal brain development. The researchers measured the iodine concentration in urine samples taken in the first trimester from 1,040 pregnant women, classifying 67 per cent as being iodine deficient. Mental development of their children was assessed by measuring child IQ at age eight, and reading ability at nine. Adjusting the results for external factors likely to affect these scores the researchers found that children of women in the iodine-deficient group were significantly more likely to have low scores of verbal IQ, reading accuracy and reading comprehension. The lower the mother’s concentration of iodine, the lower were the average scores for IQ and reading ability in the children.

TAKING a moderate dose of calcium supplement every day can help women live longer, a study has found. Up to 1,000mg of calcium consumed daily in supplement form is associated with a longer lifespan in women, according to the findings of research into the health of more than 9,000 people in Canada between 1995 and 2007. Although the data showed women who took calcium supplements had a lower mortality risk, there was no statistical benefit for men, according to the research. Higher amounts of calcium were potentially linked to longer lifespans in women, regardless of the source - dairy foods, non-dairy foods or supplements - the study, accepted for publication in The Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, found. The findings come after past studies have linked calcium supplements, taken by millions of elderly people and post-menopausal women to prevent bone thinning, to heart disease risk.

ELECTRIC lights, including those illuminating laptop computers, smartphones and tablets, often play a key role in causing people to sleep badly, a leading expert has said. Artificial lights disrupt the body’s natural rhythm, affect chemicals in the brain and drive people to use stimulants like caffeine to stay awake longer, according to Harvard academic Professor Charles Czeisler. Writing in the journal Nature, the professor of sleep medicine at Harvard Medical School called for research to help develop “behavioural and technical” ways of counteracting the ill effects of artificial light on modern sleeping patterns. The decline in the number of hours slept per night is affecting public health, including a greater risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, depression and stroke in adults and concentration problems in children, he said. While all electric light affected “circadian rhythms” the natural body clock - and sleep, night-time exposure to LED lights like those in phones and computers was “typically more disruptive” than standard electric light bulbs, he said. “There are many reasons why people get insufficient sleep in our 24/7 society, from early starts at work or school, or long commutes, to caffeine-rich food and drink,” he wrote. “But the precipitating factor is an often unappreciated, technological breakthrough: the electric light. “Without it, few people would use caffeine to stay awake at night. And light affects our circadian rhythms more powerfully than any drug.” Between 1950 and 2000, the average person in the UK increased their use of artificial light sources by four times, with a parallel rise in sleep deficiency, Prof Czeisler said.

It first surfaced last year as “human betacoronavirus 2c EMC”, but the suffixes “2c England-Qatar, “2C JordanN3”, “England 1” have also appeared and many scientists have resorted to “novel coronavirus” - new crownshaped virus - instead. While the World Health Organisation (WHO) says the virus and the severe infections and deaths it has caused are “alarming” and need to be tracked, none of its names is especially helpful. “A virus is only ‘novel’ until the next one comes around,” Raoul de Groot, head of the Coronavirus Study Group (CSG), said of the catchiest of the titles it has acquired so far. So with the death toll from the 42 cases identified at 21 and expected to rise - de Groot’s group has come up with a new name: “Middle East Respiratory Syndrome” or MERS, since all the cases have had a direct or indirect connection to the region. The CSG, which published the name in the Journal of Virology last week, said it had been endorsed by the Saudi, Dutch and British scientists who discovered it, the WHO’s European office and the Saudi health ministry. But naming deadly new viruses is fraught with sensitivity, and the signs are this matter has yet to settle. When scientists called a “superbug” enzyme that makes bacteria resistant to almost all known antibiotics “New Delhi metallo beta lactamase”, or NDM-1, the Indian health ministry called it “malicious propaganda” to put India in the name. “Clearly, naming viruses and diseases after ethnicity, religion, gender and lifestyle is potentially stigmatising and offensive, and thus unacceptable,” de Groot said. “All parties involved were acutely aware of sensitivities around geographic naming and the issue has been weighed very carefully,” he said.

The MERS decision involved Ron Fouchier of the Erasmus Medical Centre in the Netherlands, Maria Zambon of the UK Health Protection Agency and Ali Mohamed Zaki, an Egyptian microbiologist working at the Dr Soliman Fakeeh Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, among others. All of them played key roles in discovering the new virus. According to a source close to the discussions, who declined to be identiﬁed due to sensitivities surrounding the issue, one suggestion was to name the virus after Zaki as a tribute to his work; he lost his job after going public with

his ﬁndings. It is early days, but so far, MERS has not caught on, despite the WHO’s European branch saying “the WHO and other committee members strongly urge the use of this name in scientiﬁc and other communications”. A “disease outbreak update” issued from the WHO’s global headquarters in Geneva on Wednesday referred to the “novel coronavirus” or “nCoV” throughout. MERS did not get a mention. A WHO spokesman said he was unable to comment on the discrepancy but added that from now on “we are going to be using the new name in all our updates”.

the franchise’s roots, and it’s always dark. It’s a relief when the film shifts up to a spacious, sunny Spanish freeway that can support the destructive tank, truck and muscle car madness. The astonishing-but-unremarked collateral death toll is a small price to pay. It arrives late, but the carmageddon still delivers. “No film that includes a Vin Diesel flying head-butt could remotely be called a writeoff, and Furious 6, like its predecessors, is a big screen no-brainer that’s objectively terrible but undeniably pleasurable. Well, girls and Paul Walker. “Justin Lin has now directed four of these, and has a flair for digital showmanship which comes alive twice in lavish set-pieces – first on a suspended stretch of highway in the Canary Islands, then on that plane, which gathers speed for 15 minutes, on what has to be the world’s longest runway, while about a dozen good guys try to stop it in their hot-rods. “Before, after, and between these sequences, even by the paltry standard of previous scripts, it’s slow-witted and won’t shut up. We’re mistaken for caring about this crew as ‘family’, when their only function for any sentient audience is the crazy driving. This Weekend May Fayre Learn a little about the past

Learn how to save the planet AS THE world becomes smaller it becomes even easier for us to mess it up but for us also to learn about how to protect it. The Fifth Ecological Festival on Sunday will teach you how to be more environmentally friendly, how to recycle throw-away objects into useful ones, which will also help save a few bucks. So why not learn how to save the planet while also saving up for a rainy day. During the festival under the slogan ‘I have a say in the environment I live in’ you can draw on sea shells or banners and take part in a treasure hunt of knowledge to get the chance to win ecological prizes. The centre for studies and research will be there to give lessons on how to turn used cooking oil into petrol, in a very simple and easy way. Then you can smile next time you pass by a petrol station instead of cringing at the increasing prices. Bring along your old Tshirts for Frederick university students to transform them into a bag, also get to see the method so you can do it at home. Professors of the university will make learning fun and also very colourful by teaching those present how to do face painting with organic paint. Grown-ups can learn the method and children can

begin to learn how to better protect and treat the environment. Along with your old Tshirts, also put in your recycled bag milk cartons, containers for baby foods, such as farine lacte, plastic yogurt pots, plastic water or milk bottles, old buttons and ribbons, or any other decorative materials that you may have lying about the home and Waste Management from the environmental department will teach you how to make unique and original pots. You won’t have to go all the way to a home centre or a nursery to buy a pot to plant your ﬂowers in, instead you will be killing two birds with one stone. You will be helping save the environment by also making it even more beautiful to look at. The non-for-proﬁt environmental organisasion Textile Recyling will also lend a hand in teaching us how to create different items from old clothes. Members of Zorbas bakery will guide us through making bread so we can have it and eat it. Children will also showcase their environmentally friendly creations to encourage us adults to take part and show us that it is only child’s play. TAKE some time out from modernity on Sunday and visit Potamia May Fair, where the whole family can take a little part of tradition away with them. The Potamia community has organised this fair to celebrate the efforts of past and present residents in rejuvenating the local history and heritage of the village. Looking to the future with an eye on preserving the past, the event will give participants the opportunity to hear about the plans and see where an abandoned house will be transformed into a museum. On the agenda is traditional food, just like grandma used to make, traditional games for adults and children, traditional songs sung by elementary school children, traditional dancing by the Dance for Peace group, and a photo exhibition. The kids can also jump on trampolines and play with farm animals. A guided tour of the village will also be given, including a tour of where the museum

Festival Make a day of it at Kamares festival THE Kamares Festival promises to make Saturday busy with a tennis tournament, entertainment for everyone and singing by Pippa Langhorne, while also raising as much money as possible for charity. There will be over 50 arts and crafts stands where you can buy some really unique items for the home or other artsy objects which will surely come in handy as a present. You will also get the chance to take part in charity games and entertainment for adults and children alike. A tennis tournament will be running throughout the day for players of all abilities. Cool down or just enjoy the taste of some free wine tasting as well. Refreshments will be available, free of charge, throughout the day. Drive (Novacinema2, 22.00) Style is everything in this moody crime movie, and you should probably watch something else if you’re not even a little bit stirred during the first 10 minutes, when a car chase gives way to a discreet fadeto-black then the pounding thrum of ‘Nightcall’ by Kavinsky coming up over the opening credits (I got chills up and down my spine when I watched it in the cinema). Ryan Gosling is the man in the car chase, our hero, a laconic getaway driver who sticks his neck out for nobody but is nonetheless a good guy, a “real human being” like it says in the song; he fancies nextdoor neighbour Carey Mulligan and vice versa, but then Carey’s husband - fresh out of jail - gets involved

with some shady characters, including avuncular gangster Albert Brooks, and Ryan swings into action. A hard-boiled thriller (the violence is shocking), a slow-burning series of pregnant moments - but also a battle of Blue vs. Red, the artful visuals tinged with those colours as Ryan alternates between Good and Evil. You see what I mean about style. Made in 2011.

Sleepless in Seattle (LTV3, 22.00) Seattle was the coolest place on Earth in the early 90s (remember grunge? remember Frasier?), and a fitting backdrop for this much-loved romantic blockbuster, the first pairing of Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Tom is Sleepless, a widower still grieving over his late wife.

Meg is Helpless, falling in love with Tom’s voice when he goes on the air on Christmas Eve to talk about his pain with a radio shrink - except that she’s 3000 miles away, and engaged to a dull fiancé. Nine-yearold Ross Malinger is Reckless, engineering a meeting between his dad (that’s Tom) and winsome Meg in a bold attempt to find himself a new mother. The film itself is Harmless, mushy, old-fashioned and generally fun, borrowing its finale atop the Empire State Building from 50s tearjerker An Affair to Remember. Tom is Mr. Nice Guy, Meg is a doll though you’ll know what she meant when she joked (years later) “I have been known to cause diabetes”. Ahern, 35, was found guilty of conspiring to commit a corrupt or fraudulent practice in relation to the laying of five horses between September 2010 and February 2011. More significantly, he was also found in breach of intentionally failing to ensure Judgethemoment was ridden on its merits at Lingfield in January 2011, and of passing information for reward. Ahern’s solicitor Christopher Stewart-Moore said his client intends to appeal both the BHA disciplinary panel’s findings and the severity of the suspension. Stewart-Moore said in a statement issued to Press

Association Sport: “Eddie Ahern is absolutely devastated by the BHA Panel’s findings. “He did not breach the rules of racing as found by the panel or at all and he will be appealing both the findings as well as the very harsh penalties imposed on him.” Former West Brom footballer Neil Clement has been disqualified from the sport for 15 years and three months. He was also fined £3,000. Clement faced charges relating to the five races Ahern rode in and also the laying of Hindu Kush, which he then owned, when that horse finished last of six at Kempton in February 2011. a failure to provide phone records. The most serious breach against Ahern was his failure to ride Judgethemoment on its merits. The Jane Chapple-Hyam trained gelding ﬁnished last of seven runners in a twomile handicap, having been well clear at the halfway stage. Ahern’s explanation for the ride was that he misjudged the pace and did not realise he was so far ahead. The BHA disciplinary panel said it “could not accept that a jockey of Ahern’s experience, especially on the allweather at Lingﬁeld, could have made an error of such an extent”. County Tipperary-born Ahern has been used by a number of top trainers, including Sir Henry Cecil.

TAIWAN’S world boxing chief (AIBA) President Ching-kuo Wu announced his intention to run for International Olympic Committee president yesterday, saying the Olympic movement should be bigger than just the Games. IOC Executive Board member Wu is the fourth IOC member following Germany’s Thomas Bach and Singaporean Ng Ser Miang, both IOC vice presidents, and Puerto Rico’s Richard Carrion to decide to run for the post. The election is set for September 10 at the IOC session in Buenos Aires. Jacques Rogge, who succeeded Juan Antonio Samaranch in 2001, sees his two-term presidency come to a mandatory end in September. “The thought and concept to develop the IOC and Olympic movement beyond the realisation of the Olympism is the core principle of my candidature,” he told reporters in Taipei. “The IOC and the Olympic Games have much more power to positively impact society than any other organisation and project in this world,” said Wu. Several more candidates could emerge, with Swiss sports administrator Denis Oswald and former Olympic pole vault champion Sergei Bubka seen as possible contenders. LEICESTER run out at Twickenham for a remarkable ninth successive English rugby Premiership final tomorrow where local Midlands rivals Northampton will attempt to prevent them finishing as champions for a record 10th time. It will be an emotional day for many involved with England’s most dominant club, marking as it does the departure of several stalwart players and staff members and seen by some as the end of an era. There is also a sense of frustration after Leicester have lost five of those previous eight finals, including the last two. Northampton will be hoping to extend that streak. After finishing fourth in the regular season standings they beat table-topping Saracens in the semi-final and are seeking their first title.

This is the 13th edition of the end-of-season Twickenham finale, and few involved in the game any longer bemoan the format that replaced the traditional system of the team finishing top of the league being named champions. Certainly Leicester, who lose the bulk of their first team squad for swathes of the season due to international callups, like the current format as, having lost only one league game since the end of February, they finished like a train to secure second in the standings. Captain and former Ireland fullback Geordan Murphy, a veteran of the first playoff in 2001 and a 16-year-servant of Leicester, will retire from playing after Saturday’s clash to join the club’s coaching staff. Prop Martin Castrogiovanni is also leaving after seven crowd-pleasing years, centre Danny Hipkiss has been forced to retire through injury, assistant coach Matt O’Connor is heading to Lein-

ster and a number of other squad players are leaving. “For those guys it will be their last appearance from a playing point or coaching point of view but we’ve just got to focus on the game,” director of rugby Richard Cockerill said. For all Cockerill’s wary talk, however, Leicester start strong favourites and have come out on top in the teams’ last seven meetings, including a 36-8 thrashing in March. WORLD number two Rory McIlroy was blown off course by unseasonally cold weather at Wentworth yesterday, bogeying five of the last six holes to sink to a two-over 74 in the PGA Championship first round. The 24-year-old Northern Irishman made an encouraging start to the European Tour’s flagship event and was three-under after 12 holes but a series of late blunders meant he walked off the 18th green a frustrated youngster. “It was one of those rounds I let slip through my fingers,” McIlroy told reporters after finishing eight strokes adrift of clubhouse leader James Kingston of South Africa. “It could have been something good and I could have been near the top of the leaderboard but instead I am where I am.” McIlroy said the chilly eightdegree temperatures and winds gusting up to 20mph combined to make it a tough day for scoring at the long 7,302-yard West Course on the outskirts of London. “The thing that gets me is the cold and I was wearing mittens all day,” he added after finishing with bogey sixes at the 17th and 18th. “Your body just doesn’t feel the way it usually does and we are so used to playing in warm conditions these days. This is a little bit of a change,” said McIlroy who plays a lot of his golf in the United States. McIlroy, still waiting for his first victory of 2013 after winning the orders of merit on both sides of the Atlantic last year, limped home in 41 strokes. “I didn’t really miss a shot for the first 12 holes and I feel that just now I’m not getting as much out of my rounds as I should do,” he said. Playing partner and close friend Graeme McDowell was equally unhappy with his matching 74, a round capped by a double-bogey seven at the 18th after he found water. “I don’t play this course well,” said the Northern Irishman. “It needs to be sort of fiery for me to have a chance. McDowell said the harsh British winter had softened up the putting surfaces. “My ball-striking wasn’t bad and I putted all right but let’s be honest the greens are slow,” he explained. “It’s a standard Wentworth performance for me unfortunately. It’s not really my happiest hunting ground,” said McDowell who won last week’s World Match Play Championship in Bulgaria. “I only made one birdie today and that’s not really good enough. I feel a bit beaten up right now.”

BERLIN will stage the Champions League final for the first time in 2015 and Warsaw will be the venue for the Europa League final, UEFA said yesterday. “Two beautiful venues for our finals for 2015,” UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino told a news conference. The timing could not have been better as far as Germany is concerned with an all-German Champions League final between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund set for Wembley tomorrow. The 2015 match, at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, will be the first European final in the German capital which hosted the Olympic Games in 1936 and the 2006 World Cup final. “I had expressed our wish during the 2012 final in Munich to Michel Platini that we would like to pretty soon host again such a global event,” German Football Federation (DFB) President Wolfgang Niersbach said in a statement. “It is a recognition of our abilities as organisers and hosts that this will now happen so soon. I thank UEFA for the trust and promise a superb football celebration in Berlin.” Two German cities have previously been used as the venues for the Champions League final with Munich hosting it three times in 1993, 1997 and 2012 and Gelsenkirchen staging the 2004 final. Dortmund and Hamburg have hosted the UEFA Cup, now the Europa League, final since it was switched to a singlematch final in 1998. Poland, which co-hosted Euro 2012 with Ukraine, has never staged a major European final, but Warsaw’s refurbished National Stadium staged the opening match of last year’s European Championship between Poland and Greece. It also hosted the semifinal in which Italy beat Germany 2-1. “For the Champions League final there are few stadiums that can host it, but there are more alternatives for the Europa League,” Infantino said. “But we have decided to go back to Warsaw with excellent memories of Euro 2012 and because it is a fantastic, modern efficient venue in a wonderful city in the centre of Europe.” UEFA last year awarded the 2014 Champions League final to Lisbon and the Europa League final to Turin.

No anti-IRA songs at Wembley against Ireland, says Hodgson

By James Olley ROY Hodgson says England supporters risk damaging the reputation of fans across the country if they sing anti-IRA songs at next week’s friendly against the Republic of Ireland. Wednesday’s match at Wembley will be the first meeting between the sides since February 1995, when a pre-planned riot by England fans prompted the abandonment of a fixture at Lansdowne Road after 27 minutes. The chant of ‘No Surrender (to the IRA)’ has been heard at several England matches this season and the Football Association are mindful of any politically charged singing at a fixture arranged to celebrate the organisation’s 150th anniversary year. Although FIFA declared the FA had no case to answer over claims of ‘bonfire’ chants by England supporters aimed at Rio and Anton Ferdinand during March’s World Cup qualifier in Montenegro, there is unease at the possibility of another unsavoury incident that could result in a range of possible punishments. The Metropolitan Police cannot arrest anyone singing ‘No Surrender’ as it is not a criminal offence but Article 3 of the FIFA statues states: “Discrimination of any kind against a country,

quickly by a minority. “As much as we all want to win, respect for the game and for our opponents is paramount. I strongly urge everyone to show each other respect and not to chant songs that could be regarded as insulting to others particularly from a religious or political perspective.” Hodgson’s preparations have been compromised by end-of-season tours involving players from Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester City but despite England’s double header - they play Brazil in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday week - coming at the end of a long domestic season, the 65-year-old stressed the importance of the chance to work with his

players. “These ﬁxtures are part of the FA’s 150th anniversary celebrations and some have used the word ‘friendly’ to describe them,” he said. “However, there is no such thing - these are crucial preparation matches for the qualiﬁcation games. The players share this attitude with me. Every time you step out for your country you face competition and expectation: from the fans who care passionately, from your team-mates, from your family and friends and from within yourself. “We have one or two younger faces involved and it’s important for me to assess them during this gettogether.”

The City defender has long known of Pellegrini’s reputation having been a junior at Argentinian club San Lorenzo when the Chilean was ﬁrst-team boss. Pellegrini is widely expected to be named as replacement for the sacked Roberto Mancini at the Etihad Stadium after it was conﬁrmed he is to leave Malaga at the end of the Spanish season. Zabaleta, 28, speaking in New York on City’s postseason tour, said: “I have never worked under Pellegrini before, when he was at San Lorenzo I was in the second team. “I don’t know him as a per-

son but he did well at Real Madrid, Villarreal and Malaga. “We will see if Pellegrini signs for Manchester City. “His way to play football is great. Somebody told me he is a great manager so we will wait to see what happens. “Hopefully if he comes to City he can just carry on with his football.” Pellegrini potentially moved a step closer to City when Malaga announced he would leave La Rosaleda after their ﬁnal two Primera Division games. The 59-year-old did have two years remaining on his contract but he and the club both cited ‘sporting reasons’ for his departure. Pellegrini oversaw unprecedented success at Villarreal by guiding them to a Champions League semi-ﬁnal in 2006 and second place in La Liga in 2008.

He then had a single season in charge at Real Madrid before taking over at Malaga, whom he steered to the last eight of the Champions League this year. Pellegrini’s European record would be an attraction to City, who conspicuously failed to achieve on that stage under Mancini. Zabaleta believes he would also bring a positive style of play to the club. He said: “What I saw with Malaga, whenever they played they played to win.” Zabaleta also knows there will be an onus on the players to respond to the new man. He said: “Whoever is the manager, players need to work hard. “When a new manager comes in you need to show you want to keep your place in the team and I am sure we will do in the pre-season.”

ENGLAND’S longest-serving football manager is retiring aged 71 after overseeing several trophy-laden decades at the club he loves - but he is not called Alex Ferguson. Just days after the footballing world watched Ferguson call time on his managerial career, Jimmy Davies will step aside from his post at amateur club Waterloo Dock after a 50-year stint that makes the former Manchester United boss’ 26 years look short. Davies has a lot in common with the highly successful Ferguson even though the worlds of a non-league Liverpool-based club and the serial Premier League champions are poles apart. “We like to win,” Davies told Reuters in an interview. “We come from similar backgrounds, he was a shop steward in the Glasgow shipyard, I was a shop steward on Liverpool docks. “We are quite a successful side .. at the last count we had won 72 trophies ... But he probably doesn’t have to go home and wash football kits like I have to do.” Like Ferguson, who is staying on as a director at United, Davies will not be quietly leaving the club he set up in 1963 with a group of friends he worked with on the docks. “I keep telling myself I’m going to be a passive supporter but how passive I don’t know,” he said. “I’m just going to have to restrain myself. I’m going to still carry on going to the matches .. I don’t think my wife will be too pleased about that.” Davies originally started out as a player before being gently nudged into a more suitable role. “After about six games it was clear my footballing ability was sadly lacking,” said Davies, whose record as England’s longest-serving manager is recognised by the FA. “They said you’d be better suited as the manger, I think they were trying to be kind to me.” The club sits a stone’s throw away from Anfield, with the stands visible from its Edinburgh Park ground, and Liverpool fan Davies takes some inspiration from the great Bill Shankly who led his club to three league titles and two FA Cups “Second is nowhere,” is the mantra Davies has borrowed from Shankly, which puts into perspective what he thinks about Waterloo Dock’s runners-up finish in the league this season. They did win the league cup this term, though, and reached the semi-finals in two other cups. Asked about the best and worst bits of his time at the club which will come to an end on Tuesday in their final game against Red Rum, he replied: “The low point is when we get beat.”

Sport Good defending is simple answer to Robben riddle By Mitch Phillips AN internet search for ‘Arjen Robben cuts inside’ produces more than two million items, one of them a recent tweet declaring: ‘That was the 10,000th time Robben has cut inside and shot with his left foot - so predictable’. Yet, when the Bayern Munich winger bears down the right in tomorow’s Champions League ﬁnal, Borussia Dortmund’s defenders, if they follow in the misdirected footsteps of so many before them, will still, inexplicably, allow the Dutchman to switch the ball on to his favoured left foot and turn a usually benign situation into a potentially critical one. Robben’s right foot was once described as being “made of chocolate” by compatriot Johan Cruyff and is still so ineffective that any Sunday league full back, let alone the cream of the world’s defenders, would know to focus their entire strategy on forcing him to use it. The number of times he hits the byline and successfully crosses with his right foot is roughly comparable to the 29-year-old’s total active hair follicles - not many while statistics produced by Prozone show that almost 80 per cent of his shots are with his left. Yet, time and time again, having feinted to go outside, Robben is somehow given the space to cut in. Too often the end result is that the ball sails into the top tier behind the goal but, as he has matured, the manoeuvre now more often leads to a dangerous pass or a ﬁerce, left-footed, attempt on goal. If the world’s television watchers have managed to identify this familiar routine, then clearly leading coaches and players are aware of it too. So why is he still so often allowed to venture into the one place he wants to go instead of being ushered down a generally blind alley?

He has quick feet, wonderful control and critically explosive speed over the first two or three metres so that even when defenders are expecting the move they are sometimes unable to counter it, but there is very little deception about what he does. The process leaves many experienced observers shaking their heads in frustration every time his all-too-familiar ‘trick’ comes off. “If the defender is doing his job properly of course you can stop him cutting inside but they have to really concentrate because he is so quick and clever,” former England manager Terry Venables told Reuters. Paolo Maldini, one of the best left backs to grace the game, said the problem was part of a general falling away in the quality of defending. “I believe that great defenders are so rare now. Every great team in Europe is good attacking but very bad defensively, including the great teams in the Champions League,” the former Italy and AC Milan stalwart told Reuters. “The mentality is attack, attack and so that is why maybe the fullbacks are so focused on attacking. The knowledge of the people who teach you how to defend is not so high and you are now seeing the results.” Maybe, having suffered from yet another injury and a subsequent long-term absence from Bayern’s first team, Robben is just taking full advantage of being back in the frame and the worst of his diving, histrionics and selfish choices might be behind him. His performance will certainly be central to Bayern’s prospects, when the man marking him will be Marcel Schmelzer. If the German international has done his homework and manages to keep Robben glued to his chocolate side then it could well be a sweet night for Dortmund.

ORDS and hats may have to be eaten along with the usual canapes and caviar if Lewis Hamilton wins the glamour race of the Formula One season in Monaco this weekend. The sceptics who doubted McLaren’s 2008 world champion would stand on top of the podium this season after his move to Mercedes face a moment of truth with Hamilton’s team arriving in the Mediterranean principality on the back of three pole positions in a row. Mercedes have faded in races so far, unable to control their car’s insatiable appetite for tyres on a Sunday afternoon, but Monaco’s tight and treacherous streets are kinder on the compounds. Hamilton, a winner in what is now his home in 2008, loves the historic circuit that winds up through Casino square and blasts down through the echoing tunnel and out along the harbourside and the ranks of swaying super-yachts. Champions Red Bull have won the jackpot for the past three years, with Australian Mark Webber triumphant in 2012 after also winning in 2010, but Mercedes’ qualifying form threatens their run of success.

“Mercedes will arrive as favourites for Monaco,” said Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso after he won his home race in Spain earlier this month. “They’ve been on pole position for the last three races, they were on pole last year with Michael Schumacher’s lap, so it would be a surprise if they weren’t on pole position in Monaco,” the Spaniard added. “And it’s more difficult to overtake in Monaco, so maybe they can keep good positions for longer.” Hamilton’s team mate Nico Rosberg will be just as much of a threat, with the German - who grew up in Monaco with the circuit part of his daily journey to school - chasing a hat-trick of poles after Bahrain and Spain. Red Bull’s triple champion Sebastian Vettel leads the standings after five races, four points ahead of Lotus’ Kimi Raikkonen and 17 clear of Alonso in third place. The tyres should be less of a problem than in Spain, where four pitstops were the norm and a shocked Hamilton sank from second on the grid to 12th at the chequered flag, although debris damage will still be a concern. Suppliers Pirelli, who have brought their softest tyres to the race, expect drivers to have to make no more than two visits to the pits. Hamilton left Spain too

stunned to focus on Monaco but a sponsor trip to the United States and a visit to Le Mans to watch the French MotoGP race last weekend are sure to have revived his spirits. Monaco is the date on the calendar he has been looking forward to more than most. He has watched the preparations for the race, with the barriers and grandstands going up, with barely concealed excitement. “I was running around and I was thinking - because obviously Michael put it on pole - that it (last year’s car) must have been pretty good in Monaco,” he told reporters. “So I really hope that’s the same this year.” Although Schumacher, a five time winner in Monaco, was fastest in qualifying last year, the German did not start on pole because he had a five-place penalty carried over from Spain where he had caused a collision. Webber did, and made the advantage stick with Rosberg a close second after starting alongside the Australian. Just like last year, the Red Bull driver arrives in Monaco hungry for his first win of the year - a situation he would have already resolved had Vettel not defied team orders in Malaysia. “It’s always been a good track for me,” said Webber, who can be expected to dive

into the swimming pool on his team’s quayside ‘floaterhome” - the imposing hospitality unit erected on pontoons next to the paddock - if he wins again. “It’s still a daunting place, a very challenging venue. I’m not saying you are on holiday there but when I’m out there, I don’t know what makes me feel as comfortable as I do.” Alonso and Vettel are the only drivers to have won twice this year, with Raikkonen the other winner, and the Spaniard can become the first to win at Monaco for three different teams having triumphed previously for Renault and McLaren. Raikkonen, the 2007 world champion who now has 22 consecutive scoring finishes to his credit and is closing in on Schumacher’s record of 24, can take the overall lead if events go his way. The race also offers a chance for Williams, three times winners in Monaco, to score their first point of a so far dismal season with Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado very much at home on the steel-fenced streets.
