Christofias slams EU fiscal policies First address as EU Council President given to MEPs rips into ‘failed model’ By Jacqueline Agathocleous

P

RESIDENT Demetris Christofias gave a rousing speech about ‘market lawlessness’ and a ‘fairer society’ to the European Parliament yesterday, marred only by an attack from a British MEP who slammed Cyprus over crooked lawyers and property developers. Before the incident, during his address in which he outlined the Cyprus presidency’s priorities, Christofias expressed his dissatisfaction at the EU’s policies in dealing with the financial crisis. “We should have the strength to self-criticise, on a national but also a European level, for the possible political inaction or the weaknesses of the policies that were implemented in Europe over the past two decades,” said Christofias. He said the EU’s model of absolute freedom of the market, without state supervision or safety clauses, had failed – a comment that was met with applause from MEPs. “It is one thing to talk about free market and another about market lawlessness,” he said. “I am against the latter and I want to state that intervention is required from govern-

ments that are elected by the people to govern and not to be governed by markets”. The President went on to blast the “strict austerity policies” that were implemented by the EU to deal with the crisis, saying they not only proved incapable of solving the problems, but made them worse. “We can’t, with our policies, offload the bulk of the crisis onto the shoulders of those who barely make a living,” said Christofias. He called for fairer distribution of produced income. “We will attempt to bring together fiscal discipline with development and social cohesion. This is something which, I would like to believe, is new. Let’s try it. What we have tried all these years has not yielded results,” Christofias said. His address was followed by MEPs’ statements, which were generally positive with no criticism relating to the fact that Cyprus took over the EU presidency only days after seeking a bailout for itself. There were several references to the fact that Christofias was a ‘communist President’ “I won’t create a revolution, don’t worry,” he told MEPs. There were also several comments on the Cyprus problem

SPECTACULAR SPOTLIGHT ON THE SHARD

Scientists unveil ‘God particle’ milestone By Chris Wickham and Rosalba O’Brien

LONDON was lit up as never before with a spectacular laser show to mark the completion of the Shard. Coloured beams from 12 lasers and 30 powerful searchlights shot across the night sky to illuminate the landmark in an hourlong display. But the daz-

zling performance was just a dress rehearsal for the real thing, which will take place at 10pm BST tonight to herald the end of external work to the £450 million, 1,020ft tall tower at London Bridge. Prince Andrew will be among the first people to step into the 72nd floor, 360

degree viewing gallery along with the prime minister of Qatar, whose country has financed the building. The £50 million price of one of the Shard’s apartments will be beyond most people’s means but the laser show is free. It will be streamed live at the-shard.com

SCIENTISTS at the CERN research centre have found a new subatomic particle that could be the Higgs boson, the basic building block of the universe. Joe Incandela, spokesman for one of the two teams hunting for the Higgs particle told an audience at CERN near Geneva: “This is a preliminary result, but we think it’s very strong and very solid.” “I can confirm that a particle has been discovered that is consistent with the Higgs boson theory,” said John Womersley, chief executive of Britain’s Science & Technology Facilities Council, at an event in London. The Higgs particle, although crucial for understanding how the universe was formed, remains theoretical. It explains how particles clumped together to form stars, planets and even life. Without the Higgs particle, the particles that make up the universe would have remained like a soup, the theory goes. It is the last undiscovered piece of the Standard Model that describes the fundamental make-up of the universe.

THALASSAEMIA patients are forced to pick up drugs for their treatment on a daily basis because the state pharmacies are in short supply, said the Pancyprian Thalassaemia Association (PTA) yesterday. The association called on the state to take immediate steps to ensure thalassaemia patients receive the necessary treatment, noting that the current situation was causing “unprecedented disruption” to their lives while putting their health at risk. According to the association, the state has been unable to meet patients’ needs due to depleted stocks of Exjade (deferasirox), a once-daily treatment for chronic iron overload due to blood transfusions. The 38 patients taking Exjade are forced to go to state pharmacies up to four times a week to get the drug, which will only cover their daily needs, said the PTA. Exjade is administered to patients who do not respond to oth-

er treatments. It comes in the form of a dissolvable pill, which the patient must take on a daily basis to avoid serious complications to their health. Despite prescriptions for a month’s supply of the drug, the state pharmacies only provide small quantities that will last the patient three to four days. This is causing “huge problems” to the daily lives of patients, particularly in their working environment since they have no choice but to be absent from work and wait in queues to get their dosage, said the PTA. In a letter to the head of the pharmaceutical service dated June 21, the association called for an immediate solution to the problem and the proper administration of the drug to patients, noting that the current situation is negatively impacting upon their treatment. The association also highlighted that an additional 26 thalassaemia patients who were given approval to start treatment on Exjade a year ago are still waiting to receive the drug, posing an immediate danger to their health and life.

Online casino operaters left their female employees to protest against the bill outside the House yesterday as they themselves sat and drank coffee in the shade, witnesses said (Christos Theodorides)

Police decision to protect OPAP shops Drastic measures ahead of gaming bill vote this week By Jacqueline Agathocleous POLICE have decided to take drastic measures to protect all OPAP gaming shops, especially following parliament’s decision to put the controversial betting bill to the vote this week. It was yesterday reported that the force had decided to guard all 168 OPAP shops during closing hours in a meeting at police headquarters. Even though Justice Minister Loucas Louca yesterday confirmed “added measures will be taken to deal with the matter”, he didn’t go into further details or confirm reports that the plan was to place a guard outside every single shop. “These are operational matters,” he told the Cyprus Mail. “But measures are definitely being taken, this is no secret.” The minister was dismissive of concerns over taxpayers’ money being spent on protecting a pri-

vate company. “We are not protecting a private company, we are averting criminal acts and all criminal acts are a threat to the safety of the general public,” said Louca. “We have a duty and responsibility towards all members of the public to protect them against any criminal act. Are we going to allow people to just kill each other, because it has to do with private interests?” So far, eight of the Greek lottery operators’ shops have been targeted. Police dealt with four arson attacks in Limassol and two in Nicosia, while last week, shots were fired against two Nicosia shops. The attacks have been connected to a bill being discussed at parliament to regulate betting, which includes a provision that bans shops from offering online gambling games. Betting shop owners and those in charge of the so-called online casinos that have opened everywhere across Cyprus have

been up in arms over the fact that OPAP – a Greek gaming company that offers games such as Lotto, Kino, Joker and Propo – has been excluded from the bill. On Tuesday, after months of deliberating, MPs finally decided on the tax that will be imposed on betting companies: betting companies will pay 10 per cent on their revenues to the government and a 3.0 per cent contribution to a gambling board, which will be set up.

PLENUM The board will then distribute the money to the Cyprus Football Association, other sporting and special programmes dedicated to fighting gambling addiction. And yesterday, the House Finance and Legal Affairs Committees announced deputies had agreed to send the bill to the plenum on Friday. Its approval is expected to be unanimous, said DISY’s Ionas Nicolaou, with the ex-

ception of the provision for exchange betting. According to Nicolaou, DISY and DIKO agree with the introduction of exchange betting, ruling AKEL disagrees, and EDEK has held back from offering a final stance until the plenary session. Some have blamed the delays in passing the bill for last month’s brutal murder of five men, four of whom worked as security guards for Famagusta businessman Fanos Kalopsidiotis, who owns betting shops in the district. Meanwhile, the case of Nasos Ktorides – a UNICEF goodwill ambassador philanthropist, and chairman of Quantum Energy Cyprus – who was wrongly arrested for the OPAP arsons in Limassol, has been taken to the Supreme Court. Police arrested Ktorides briefly after receiving an anonymous tip-off, though there was no evidence connecting him to the attacks. Ktorides was in Israel at the time of the attacks.

Home CYPRUS TODAY Drugs bust in Limassol POLICE arrested two men in Limassol yesterday in separate incidents for the possession of illegal drugs. One arrest involved a 38year-old man when police pulled over a car and found one gramme of cannabis in his car. Following a search of his house, the police then discovered another four grammes. The second arrest occurred following a tipoff given to the Drug Law Enforcement Unit resulting in the detainment of a 34-year-old who was found in possession of both 5.5 grammes of cannabis and a small number of cannabis seeds.

As of July 1, an increased total of 40 scheduled shuttle buses will service the route Nicosia-Larnaca Airport, with the starting point being relocated to the Kyrenia Avenue behind the Melkonian Educational Park Traffic Police Headquarters. Additionally, the company stated that their office at the airport will now operate 24 hours a day.

36 holidays A BRITISH couple, Derek and Jean Oldham, were presented with a commemorative plaque during a ceremony yesterday by Ayia Napa mayor Antonis Tsokkos for having visited the island 36 times. The mayor thanked the couple for always returning to Ayia Napa and said he hoped they continued to visit in years to come.

‘Fantastic job’ saving Akamas Praise for quick response to three fires in sensitive area By Bejay Browne IT WAS praise all round for the fire services and the forestry department yesterday for the handling of three separate fires, which threatened the Akamas and nearby villages on Tuesday. The largest blaze which started at 9am on Tuesday morning destroyed over two square kilometres of land near Neo Chorio. Andreas Constantinou the secretary of the Paphos Green party said they visited the area on Tuesday. “It was a miracle how the fire was brought under control so fast,” he said. Constantinou along with other members of the Green party joined in the operation to extinguish the blaze alongside the fire department, the forestry department, civil defence and locals. “The officer in charge was telling us what to do and which areas to attend to. It was a case of everyone helping, they were all so determined. Many of the locals came with hand held extinguishers and other paraphernalia to aid in putting out the fire, their help was essential,” he said. Constantinou said the wind has spread the blaze quickly, and a large valley in the area acted like a natural chimney pushing the fire upwards.” “The devastation in the area is very bad,” he added. He said that initial indications show that sparks from metal cutting equipment may

have started the first blaze. “Although we believe the first fire may have started by accident, it seems as if people wishing to cause harm to the Republic of Cyprus may have had a hand in starting the following blazes. It certainly had nothing to do with the local people, we must stress that.” The communications director and one of the owners of the five-star Anassa Hotel, Natasha Michaelides said yesterday the fire was a few kilometres from the hotel. “Luckily we were not in any danger at any point,” she said. “My clothes smelt very badly of smoke and after the authorities had extinguished the fire last night the smell was more acute. Everything smelt of smoke but by this morning (Wednesday) it had cleared,” said Michaelides. Eugene Zosimo was filming pre wedding shots with a couple at the Anassa. “There had been smoke visible all day from about 9am and different helicopters were flying overhead and grabbing water from the sea. Zosimo had planned to take the couple to an area in Neo Chorio to film the fields and trees “We got about ½ km away from the fire but the road had been closed. I was very impressed at how organised everything was. There were people from Latchi in pick-up trucks full with water containers joining big groups to provide assistance to the forestry department and the firefighters.”

A helicopter scoops up water from the sea According to the filmmaker the couple who are Russian residents, took the situation in their stride. “We were impressed that the firemen and others did a fantastic job,” said Zosimo. Beverley Newman lives in Kathikas overlooking the area towards Lara Bay where the second blaze started. “The ash from the fire was carried in the wind and there was a lot on my patio furniture,” she said, adding: “Firefighters did a brilliant job.” The Forestry Department

(Submitted by a reader in Paphos)

said that both fires (Neo Chorio and Lara) were brought under control late on Tuesday afternoon. Mapping and calculation of the burned areas will take place over the next few days. Both state owned and private pine forest was burnt, along with agricultural plantations of carob and olive trees and other wild vegetation. Forces consisting of 120 members of the forestry department, 130 firefighters, members of the game fund, civil defence, the national

guard, the Paphos district administration, community councils residents and volunteers, all worked together to control the fires. In addition, 35 fire engines, six helicopters and two planes were used to put out the three separate fires in the area. Forces remained at the scene overnight to deal with any re igniting of the area. They will remain until the immediate threat has passed. The causes of the fires are under investigation, and malice has not yet been ruled out.

Larnaca fire caused by sparks from a generator By Stefanos Evripidou STRONG WINDS helped spread a fire in the Larnaca district yesterday after sparks flew off a generator, burning half a kilometre of dry grass and wild vegetation. The raging fire started in one area but was moved to another with the help of the generator’s owner who literally transported the fire using his car, which then spread like... wild fire. The fire broke out at around 2pm between the villages of Alethriko and Alaminos in the Ayios Theodoros area when a local resident made use of a gen-

erator to water the trees in his field. Sparks flew off the generator, and caught on to dry grass. The fire spread to the underneath of the man’s Mercedes. When he tried to move his car, he took the fire with him. With the help of strong winds, it soon spread to neighbouring fields. By 4pm, it was out of control, with land and air forces fighting alongside local residents to put it out. Fire Service spokeswoman Eliza Kemidji said last night it was finally brought under control at 7.15pm. Twelve fire engines were used to put the fire out, along with a number of tractors brought by local residents, three helicopters from the Cyprus Republic and British bases and two Forestry Department

planes. Firefighters will stay in the area overnight. Two more fires broke out yesterday. One forest fire which had started in the north spread to the government-controlled areas, Xylotympou forest in the Mesania area, at around 1.30pm. The fire was brought under control around an hour and 15 minutes later, after burning half a square kilometre of forest filled with eucalyptus trees, acacia and wild shrub. Thirty firefighters took part in putting out the fire, using seven fire engines and two tractors. A third fire threatened the state forest in Ayia Varvara but was brought under control 15 minutes after it started at around 4pm, after managing to burn some wild shrub.

A tightrope between austerity and reform Shiarly tells troika to be mindful of the ‘social dialogue’ By George Psyllides TROIKA officials, in Cyprus on a fact-finding mission ahead of bailout negotiations, were told yesterday to be particularly careful when it came to the island’s longstanding social dialogue between state, unions and employers. Cyprus has to negotiate a tightrope of possible austerity or reform unlikely to go down well in a country where unions are strong and where the government is facing a general election in seven months. The troika were gently reminded of that yesterday by Finance Minister Vassos Shiarly. “We have highlighted the need that they be particularly careful concerning issues of social and political cohesion,” Shiarly said. Unlike their Greek cousins, Cypriots rarely strike or take to the streets for protests over economic issues. Officials say this is because of a tradition of consensus-building among stakeholders, though critics say that has complicated longoverdue economic reforms. “Cyprus has secured a healthy economy for many years, with industrial peace and we want this social cohesion to continue,” Shiarly said. He was speaking after meeting the troika team, which arrived on Monday and have held several rounds of meetings. In addition to Shiarly, the troika met deputies from the House Finance Committee yesterday, and also with employers’ organisations OEV and KEVE who made clear their long-time stance on the scrapping of the index-linked Cost of Living Allowance (CoLA). “They asked what our posi-

Finance Minister Shiarly chairs a meeting with the troika tion is on CoLA and we replied that at some stage it must be scrapped because it raises the public sector cost but also that of private enterprise and it restricts competitiveness,” OEV chairman Filios Zachariades said. At the same time SEK trade union issued a statement saying the island’s entry to the bailout mechanism was a negative development that would limit Cyprus’ ability to be independent in managing its own finances. It was also creating insecurity among the workers given the harsh austerity imposed by the troika in other countries, the union said. “The competitiveness of the economy will not be strengthened only by the reduction of salaries and benefits of the working class,” SEK said. It added that in the past Cyprus had always managed critical economic and social issues through the social dialogue “which is what should be done now”. Shiarly said talks with the troika were expected to wrap up this month, He declined to speculate on the total amount that would be necessary, and the conditions that would probably be attached to the bailout deal. “At this stage there is no discussion; they are just gathering information,” the minister said after meeting troika representatives along with his trade and labour counterparts. “The aim of this process is, within the month, for them to be in a position to prepare a proposal, which they would have discussed with us and

concluded upon.” Shiarly said no figures had been discussed and there would not be such a discussion before the troika completed their fact-finding mission. Daily Phileleftheros claimed yesterday that Cyprus’ banks – heavily exposed to Greece – alone would need €10 billion. Reuters reported that the Central Bank declined to comment, describing any figures mentioned in the press as “purely speculative.” Shiarly said it would be irresponsible for anyone but especially the government, to give figures. The government and the troika “have repeatedly said that this matter will be studied and assessed and conclusions will be drawn and then we will speak,” the minister said. Fitch ratings said last week that Cypriot banks would need €6.0 billion in capital, foreseeing significant loan losses in Greece and an increasing non-performing loan ratio in Cyprus. Fitch acknowledged that its estimates were conservative and subject to considerable uncertainty but nonetheless, in its opinion, “Cypriot banks will require substantial injections of capital in order to secure confidence in their financial viability.” “These people (troika) are experts, they have huge experience and if, as they say, they need one or two weeks to study the matter and get back to us why is it necessary for us to resort to specifying numbers.” While the jury is still out on

the banks, the state’s needs in the next couple of years would be around €4.0 billion – if they are eventually limited to debt refinancing alone. Shiarly said it is publicly known that the state needs around €4.0 billion by the end of 2014, an amount that would not be added to its public debt. “You will pay off one debt with another,” he said, adding that the interest may be better since it will come from the EFSF. Asked if the political climate would allow adoption of any measures proposed by the troika, Shiarly said Cypriot politicians have shown in the past that they put national interest above everything else when the need arises. “Now what the changes and recommendations would be and what would be proposed to parliament … is very difficult for one to predict,” Shiarly said. Members of the troika also met with the House Finance Committee who assured them of their readiness to tackle the economy’s problems. “The common aim of all the political forces is to tackle the Cypriot economy’s imbalances in a manner that would make our economy competitive and viable, without affecting social cohesion,” committee chairman Nicolas Papadopoulos said. “If only other governments in Europe had the responsible opposition and party co-operation found in Cyprus, which we are certain will allow us to succeed.” (see editorial page 11)

Treasury bills worth €250m THE FINANCE Ministry yesterday announced an agreement with institutional investors in the domestic market to sell €250 million worth of treasury bills on July 12. The treasury bills will be issued through private placement and will have a three-month duration while the rate of interest on the bills will be announced after their issuance. According to the ministry, the €250 million will be used to meet the refinancing needs of the state.

CoLA is anachronistic and socially unjust EMPLOYERS yesterday reaffirmed their demand for wage indexation to be scrapped, as it was a dated and socially unjust institution, but at this stage they would settle with an overhaul. KEVE and OEV representatives met with troika delegates with the discussion focusing on wage indexation or CoLA, which employers believe restricts the economy’s competitiveness. “They asked what our position is on CoLA and we replied that at some stage it must be scrapped because it raises the public sector cost but also that of private enterprise and it restricts competitiveness,” OEV chairman Filios Zachariades said. His counterpart at KEVE echoed the sentiment, describing CoLA as an “anachronistic and socially unjust institution.” He added: “Under the circumstances, since we know that it is being discussed and the labour ministry is negotiating with the unions, we are prepared to discuss a serious reform.” The two sides also discussed the economy’s structural problems, restructuring the

public sector, restraining the public payroll, resolving pensions and the need to review the structure of semi-government organisations. But the main problem faced by businesses today is the shortage of loans and their high costs where available, “It is very important for banks to be able to fund businesses after recapitalisation,” Zahariades said. Meanwhile, Cyprus’ accountants stressed that the island’s coveted corporate tax must be safeguarded. “Any thought for change is out of the question,” said ICPAC chairman Theodoros Parperis. Otherwise, the effects on the economy and society would be immeasurable, he added. Parperis said 45 per cent of GDP stemmed from the island’s operation as an international finance centre while 80 per cent of state revenues from corporate tax came from international companies. “Cyprus is an international business service centre and its credibility and stability must be safeguarded at all costs,” Parperis said. The finance ministry said last week that corporate tax was not included in bailout negotiations.

Christofias rips into EU policies Kasoulides defends Cyprus after British MEP has a dig (continued from front page) and Turkey was more than once slammed, not only for occupying part of the island but also, as a candidate country, for refusing to recognise Cyprus’ presidency. It was a couple of comments by British MEP Graham Watson, which led to a heated intervention by Cypriot MEP Ioannis Kasoulides and a subsequent reaction by Christofias. Referring to the housing bubble in which scores of Britons purchased homes in Cyprus, but were left with nothing to their names as the developers were in fact bankrupt and the properties belonged to the banks, Watson said Cyprus could not lead the EU by its size or strength, so it must lead by example. “Use the EU influence to reunify Cyprus people… Lead by example in Europe’s fight against crime; intervene against the intricate intrigue of corrupted Cypriot lawyers and property developers who rob holiday homebuyers of their retirement savings,” said Watson. He also referred to the recent discovery of hydrocarbons in Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone. “Lead by example in other areas too, not by letting a fossil fuel find fool you into forgetting your island’s natural wealth of sun and wind; not by being mortgaged to Moscow, nor by evading engagement with Ankara.”

His comments were not welcomed by Kasoulides. “Mr Watson, don’t you think that by addressing this criticism to a Presidency that has not even started, it’s not objective and fair? “Particularly, when this criticism is coming from you, who represents a country that has been a colonial power that bears part of the responsibility for the island’s divide, with the policy of ‘divide and rule’”, said Kasoulides. Christofias suggested Watson divert his comments to Ankara. “You shouldn’t be directing your comments to me to talk with Turkey. You need to direct your comment to Turkey, Mr Watson, and tell them to speak with Christofias, because they are refusing to talk with Christofias,” said the president, adding that any efforts to meet with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan had been warded off. Speaking later at a joint press conference with Christofias, European Parliament President Martin Schulz called on Turkey to respect EU rules and institutions like the rotating presidency. He noted that if a country wants to join the EU, it must respect the rules. The fact that Ankara does not want to respect these rules has cast a heavy shadow over its application process, he added. What the EU needs now more than ever is a combative spirit and Christofias is the

President Demetris Christofias addresses the European Parliamennt on the priorities of the Cyprus presidency right man at the right time who can achieve social justice, said Schulz. Christofias tried not to raise expectations too high however, saying: “We only have six months. We are not magicians and miracles are not possible, but we will do our best to lay the foundation to build a fair society.”

‘I am very proud of who and what I am, President tells MEPs ‘By Jacqueline Agathocleous PRESIDENT Demetris Christofias yesterday felt the need to defend his left-wing roots, after being referred to as a communist president in a number of statements by MEPs at the European Parliament. Speaking after MEPs had their say following his speech on Cyprus’ priorities as EU president, Christofias said the EU’s austerity measures to deal with the economic crisis had clearly not worked. So he suggested “marrying fiscal discipline with growth and social cohesion”. He said the people of the EU could no longer see a better future ahead of them, which should be of great concern. “We are not proposing communist policies and I would like to comment on this especially, because I was referred to as the communist president and so on,” said Christofias. “Yes I am who I am and I am very proud of what I am; because I come from a party that has been serving the Cypriot people for 90 years; a party that mourned victims defending the Republic. It fought against fascism; it defend-

Christofias: don’t worry that the communist will do damage ed the Republic during the coup; it fought with peaceful means to rid the country from colonial mediums.” He said his party, AKEL, fought for better working conditions. “So, independent of what happened in the Soviet Union or any other countries, I can speak for AKEL; I can speak for Cyprus and as a fighter for democracy. The five years we have been governing the country I think is proof of this.” He wondered if any Cypriots – specifically naming Cypriot MEPs Ioannis Kasoulides, Koullis Mavronicolas and Eleni Theocharous

– had ever felt their rights being violated or undermined in any way during his term as president, or even as House Speaker. “On the contrary, democracy operates fully in Cyprus and we are all proud of this,” said Christofias. “Of course, don’t worry that the communist will cause damage to the Union. The communist will try for a better Union, for more social justice, always taking into account the institutions of the European Union.” He concluded, “I won’t create a revolution, don’t worry”.

In a written statement published in Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris, the authorities said they work on issues related to road safety and invited unionist Sener Elcil who made the allegation to attend all relevant meetings on the subject. Elcil, head of the Turkish Cypriot primary school teachers’ union, had claimed in a report in Afrika that the Turkish representative in the north attended a meeting on April 17 where the proposal was discussed to change the direction of traffic from left to right. Elcil accused Turkey of implementing assimilation and separatist policies in the north using traffic as an excuse.

Ambitious project for underwater cables ahead of schedule By Stefanos Evripidou AN AMBITIOUS project to construct underwater electronic cables connecting Asia with Europe via Cyprus is making good progress, according to those behind the project. An announcement released by DEH Quantum Energy said the working groups assigned to study the project’s feasibility were working “feverishly” and are ahead of schedule. By the end of the month, a map showing where the cable will be placed should be ready, it said. The co-ordinating committee in charge of studying the project held a second meeting in Tel Aviv in mid-June, welcoming the progress made. The committee said the market analysis so far showed that this was a viable project. Israel, Cyprus and Greece are studying a project to construct a submarine cable that will

carry 2,000 megawatts in both directions, allowing Israel to sell electricity when production is high and have a back-up when reserves drop. If approved, the EuroAsia Interconnector will stretch 1,000 kilometres (600 miles) in total at a maximum depth of 2,000 metres. The aim is to complete feasibility studies by the end of the year with a view to complete the project in 2016. It will take three years to build and cost an estimated €1.5 billion. The Israel-Cyprus leg is estimated to cost half a billion euros. Earlier this year, DEH Quantum Energy which is partly owned by Greece’s state-run public power corporation DEH, Cyprus’ Quantum Energy and Bank of Cyprus – signed a memorandum of understanding in Jerusalem with state-owned Israel Electric Corp (IEC) to begin a feasibility study on the project. In late March, the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) also signed a collaboration memorandum with DEH Quantum Energy concerning

the possible construction of the EuroAsia Interconnector linking up Israel, Cyprus, Crete and the Peloponnese. During the meeting in Tel Aviv, Nasos Ktorides, chairman of DEH Quantum Energy, welcomed the Cyprus Republic’s application to the EU to recognise the energy bridge as a crossborder project of common interest. This could secure EU funding for the project. Vice president of IEC Yakov Hain said the Israeli government supports the project and noted that the ministers of Cyprus and Israel also embraced it in a recent meeting they had. Last March, EAC chairman Harris Thrasou said that from the 2,000MW that will be produced in total, Cyprus will produce around 1,000-1,200MW once it is able to take advantage of its natural gas reserves, though this amount could potentially increase. He described the project as being “possibly the most important energy bridge in the world”.

Kofinou strike KOFINOU slaughterhouse workers said they would protest tomorrow over owed wages and benefits. “The strike aims to demonstrate that [workers] have lost their patience,” trade union SIDIKEK-PEO representative Antonis Neophytou said. The workers are still waiting for their 13th salary since Christmas. Neophtytou said that 29 members of staff had been made redundant but were still waiting for their compensation while others had not yet received their pension. “We hope that by striking, workers will raise awareness… so everyone proceeds swiftly,” Neophytou said. The slaughterhouse has been losing millions for years. Commerce Minister Neoclis Sylikiotis has said that departing staff would be compensated.

ACTA rejected THE Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA), was rejected by the European Parliament yesterday, and hence cannot become law in the EU. This was the first time that Parliament exercised its Lisbon Treaty power to reject an international trade agreement. 478 MEPs voted against, 39 in favour, and 165 abstained. While debating whether to approve ACTA, Parliament experienced unprecedented direct lobbying by thousands of EU citizens, including Cyprus, who called on it to reject ACTA in demonstrations, e-mails to MEPs and calls. Parliament also received a petition, signed by 2.8 million people. The vote means that neither the EU nor its individual member states can join the agreement.

Poachers use all sorts of paraphernalia (shown above) to lure birds to their deaths

MPs: lower fines will net us more poachers Concern over the message being sent by the House By Natalie Hami LAWMAKERS at the House Interior Committee yesterday discussed the possibility of amending provisions of the hunting law by issuing lower on-the-spot fines for hunters caught using audio devices to lure birds into traps. The current law provides for court fines of up to €17,000 and or three years in jail. “I don’t consider this to be a relaxation (of the law),” AKEL MP Yiannos Lamaris, and also the Committee head told the Cyprus Mail. According to Lamaris, if a hunter were caught without a gun and just the audio device he would be issued a fine of €350 and if he was caught with a gun too, and actually hunting, he would be fined €500. Bird trapping is a highly lucrative business islandwide fetching offenders thousands of euros each year. “The way it is now an officer will catch a hunter, confiscate the audio device, take him down to the station to make a statement and then he’ll

go to court, but the court has never issued a fine higher than €300,” said Lamaris. Conservationist groups, including BirdLife, Terra Cypria and Friends of the Earth, were recently up in arms over the situation saying that the fines would not be enough to act as a deterrent. They also feared how effectively it could be enforced. However, Lamaris clarified that if a hunter refused to pay the fine then and there they would go straight to court.

NOT A DETERRENT The Greens’ Giorgos Perdikis said that they were against the amendment: “It sends the message that a serious offence is no longer a serious offence and just a small one.” He stressed that it would help in the ‘spread of poaching,’ as opposed to acting as a deterrent. Perdikis also said that they were trying to agree on some changes that could act as a compromise, such as only issuing the on-the-spot fines for hunters caught within hunting peri-

ods and areas. BirdLife’s Martin Hellicar questioned how a case could be taken any further in the first place if the hunter’s gun or anything else could not be confiscated. He also expressed concern over the message that such a move would convey. “Court action is a much bigger deterrent than an on-the-spot fine,” he said, describing it as a weakening of anti-poaching legislation “when we have a growing problem”. The problem of audio devices has become a real scourge on the island, especially when it comes to thrush hunting in winter, he said. However they are widely used, along with limesticks and mist nets, by bird trappers who continue to kill thousands of songbirds, sold as delicacies known locally as ambelopoulia, and other migratory species each year. According to BirdLife’s statistics around 2.8 million birds were slaughtered in 2011; the highest number since they started monitoring the situation five years ago. The amendments will go to plenum next Thursday.

CHRISTAKIS Ioannou, 44, from Catford, London appeared at West London Magistrates’ Court yesterday in connection with the illegal sale of Olympic tickets. The Cypriot stands accused of two counts of fraud, one charge under the Proceeds of Crime Act and another relating to the London Olympic Games Act. According to reports, the 44-year-old did not say how he would plead. The magistrate has sent the case to Kingston crown court where Ioannou, who is on bail, will appear on July 12. Ioannou was arrested last month in connection with Operation Podium, the Metropolitan Police’s investigation into ticket fraud at the Olympics. So far, Operation Podium has made 186 arrests. The suspect has given no indication on how he intends to plead to the charges. Ioannou is one of several people who have been implicated in a black market scandal involving the sale of Olympic tickets for up to three times their allocated price – between £20.12 sterling (€24) and £2,012 (€2,493). The scandal was uncovered by the Sunday Times. The high-level investigation is looking into allegations that authorised representatives for more than 50 countries, including Cyprus and Greece, were involved in selling London Olympic tickets on the black market for profit. Cyprus has become embroiled in the scandal because one of those accused of falling for the newspaper’s ruse was former Olympic swimmer from Israel, Yoav Bruck, who is authorised to sell tickets in Israel and Cyprus. He is also CEO of Issta Sport, the company which holds the rights of the tickets were sold to in Cyprus.

Britain BRITAIN TODAY New BBC chief BBC EXECUTIVE George Entwistle has been appointed DirectorGeneral of the BBC, often seen as the most powerful job in UK broadcasting. He will take over from Mark Thompson on a salary of £450,000 in the autumn. Speculation had been mounting that a decision would be reached swiftly after a final round of interviews conducted by Lord Patten, the chairman of the BBC Trust. Entwistle had been director of BBC Vision since last year. Lord Patten said: “George is a creative leader for a creative organisation. His experience of making and delivering great programmes that audiences love... will prove invaluable as he and his team work to ensure the BBC remains the greatest broadcaster in the world.”

Severe weather A SEVERE weather warning has been issued for parts of the UK, with almost a month’s rain expected to fall in two days. The amber alert covers much of north-east England, where the Met Office has warned there could be flooding and disruption tomorrow and Saturday. More than 60mm of rain is expected to fall in 36 hours in some areas, approaching the 69.9mm UK average rainfall for the month of July. The average July rainfall for the north of England is 64.4mm. Rain is expected to fall in much of the UK tomorrow, with less severe yellow warnings issued for eastern, northern and central areas of England and Wales and parts of southern Scotland.

Cereal ad ban AN ADVERT for the breakfast cereal Special K has been banned after it was found to mislead women about the number of calories in a typical bowl. Manufacturer Kellogg’s was rapped by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) because the advert boasted that a bowl of Special K contained just 114 calories -- but failed to account for those in the milk. Kellogg’s argued that not everyone ate cereal with milk, with many people preferring it dry or with yoghurt or orange juice, and said the different kinds of milk meant there would be different calorie levels. But the ASA ruled the advert was misleading and ordered that it be banned, and that Kellogg’s clarifies whether or not calorie claims include milk in similar adverts.

Diamond evasive on exit pay questions Osborne puts blame on Labour for scandal OUTGOING Barclays chief executive Bob Diamond, blamed a “series of unfortunate events” for his shock departure from Barclays as he fended off calls to give up his multimillion-pound bonuses. The banking chief admitted feeling “physically ill” when he discovered traders had fiddled the key Libor rate but denied he was “personally culpable” for their actions. Diamond shed more light on a phone call he had with Bank of England deputy governor Paul Tucker about concerns “officials within the government” had with the Barclays high Libor rates. As the American banker admitted Barclays lowered the rates amid fears the Government wanted to nationalise the lender, Chancellor George Osborne claimed members of Gordon Brown’s administration were “clearly involved”. The 60-year-old was hauled before the Treasury Select Committee after Barclays was fined £290 million by UK and US regulators for fixing the Libor which affects loans and mortgages everywhere. Dressed in a blue suit and green spotted tie, he opened the session by declaring his “love” for Barclays and added: “At the core of the issues there clearly were mistakes, clearly there was behaviour that was reprehensible.” He repeatedly stated traders’ behaviour was “wrong” and that he was “disappointed”, “angry” and “sorry”. He added: “This was wrong. I’m not happy about it.” But when faced with questions over his exit pay or clawback of his bonuses, he was more evasive, saying: “That is

Former Barclays chief exec Diamond admitted there had been ‘reprehensible behaviour’ a question for the board.” In a bruising exchange, Bassetlaw MP John Mann pushed Diamond to give up millions of pounds he could be due in shares. Challenged that not having known about the abuses amounted to gross incompetence, Diamond stressed that the investigation he had put in place was “market leading”. Finance minister George Osborne has said people close to former prime minister Gordon Brown, rather than the Bank of England, were to blame for the ratefixing scandal that is rattling the country’s financial industry. Barclays received a record fine last week for publishing artificially low estimates of its borrowing costs, and a memo from Diamond on Tuesday appeared to implicate BoE deputy governor Paul Tucker.

Man spared jail for ripping off Muslim woman’s veil A MAN who ripped off a Muslim woman’s veil in a shopping centre because he thought she was “just another illegal immigrant” has been spared jail. Ian Brazier, from Shirley, Solihull, was given a six-week sentence, suspended for 18 months, and ordered to complete a diversity awareness course by magistrates in the town. The 26-year-old had admitted racially aggravated assault at an early hearing. The court heard that he tore Farhana Chughtai’s niqab from her face and threw it on the floor in Solihull’s Touchwood complex on March 3 as she shopped with family. Alan Bryce, defending, said his client was angry at the time of the incident because he had been smoking cannabis and the films he was planning to watch at the centre’s cinema were not showing. He said: “He was angry that he couldn’t see the films or the films he wanted to see weren’t there. “All these pent-up emotions were unfortunately released when he saw this lady.” The solicitor said Mrs Chughtai was a “random victim”, spotted by unemployed Brazier as he came down an escalator in the complex. He said: “He had been taking cannabis and it had made him angry. “He saw her and he thought ‘There’s just another illegal immigrant’.” The court heard that Chughtai, from Balsall Heath, Birmingham, told police she felt “naked and violated” by the assault.

UK private eye must reveal hacking details A PRIVATE detective at the heart of Britain’s phone hacking scandal has lost a key legal battle that could lead to more light being shone on the extent of illegal hacking at Rupert Murdoch’s News of the World newspaper. Glenn Mulcaire, jailed for hacking into voicemail messages on behalf of a journalist at the now defunct tabloid, has been ordered by Britain’s top court to reveal who asked him to listen in on the messages. He has three weeks to comply. Murdoch closed the News of the World, Britain’s biggest-selling newspaper, last summer after it was found to have intercepted the messages on a murdered schoolgirl’s mobile phone. Mulcaire had argued in court that he risked incriminating himself by naming who requested the illegal hacking of the phone of Nicola Phillips, an assistant to celebrity publicist Max Clifford. But the Supreme Court ruled that Mulcaire was not covered by legal protections against self-incrimination, and rejected his appeal.

Dark economic clouds gather over Obama campaign By Patricia Zengerle After a month in which his re-election campaign picked up momentum, hard economic realities are about to hit President Barack Obama as he takes to the road on a campaign bus trip through the Rust Belt. Poor manufacturing data earlier this week followed by a likely weak jobless report on Friday are reminding Obama that he has a lot of work to do to convince voters he is bringing the economy back to full health. A Supreme Court victory for Obama on healthcare and a surprise expansion of immigration laws that put Republican opponent Mitt Romney on the defensive on the issue may soon fade from memory. “By Friday, the Supreme Court will be in the rearview mirror and everybody will be talking about the state of the economy,” said Greg Valliere, an analyst for institutional investors at Potomac Research Group. US manufacturing activity contracted in June for the first time in nearly three years, data showed on Monday, stark evidence of a slowing economic recovery and that Europe’s debt crisis is weighing on the US economy. And the monthly jobless figures, the most closely watched economic indicator, are expected to be lacklustre. Economists polled by Reuters expect nonfarm

payrolls to have risen by only 90,000 jobs in June and the unemployment rate will stay unchanged at 8.2 per cent. Employers likely increased hiring, but not enough to dispel concerns that the economy is losing steam. The fiscal gloom allows Romney to re-energise his charge that the White House is not creating jobs quickly enough, after his non-stop economic criticism was drowned out by last week’s Supreme Court ruling that Obama’s 2010 healthcare law is constitutional. “From day one of his administration, the president has pursued policies that have hurt job creators, hurt the manufacturing sector, and left millions of Americans struggling to find work. It’s going to be hard for the president to argue Americans should gamble on a second term while on his bus tour,” Romney campaign spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg said.

POLICE fired teargas and used batons to disperse hundreds of protesters in Kiev yesterday after parliament voted to make Russian, rather than Ukrainian, the main language in schools and local government in some parts of the former Soviet republic. The clashes occurred after protesters, led by opposition members of parliament defending the role of Ukrainian as the only state language, massed in front of a building where President Viktor Yanukovich was due to hold a press briefing. The chamber rushed the language bill through on Tuesday, minutes after a surprise proposal by a pro-

Yanukovich deputy, giving opponents little time to cast their vote and prompting scuffles both in parliament and on the streets. Though the bill needs Yanukovich’s signature and that of parliament speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn- who has offered to quit - to become law, protesters took to the streets and stayed there overnight to bring pressure to bear on the president. “There are millions of us and they cannot pretend that nothing has happened,” said Vitali Klitschko, the world heavyweight boxing champion who has founded his own opposition party Udar (Blow), and took part in yesterday’s protest. The two-metre (6ft 7 inches) Klitschko himself had to have his eyes washed out

after being sprayed with teargas. His left arm was bandaged because of a cut sustained in the commotion. Protesters urged Yanukovich, who had planned a celebratory statement to crown the successful co-hosting of the Euro 2012 football tournament, to veto the bill, which was pushed through by his own majority Party of Regions. Opposition parties and millions who speak Ukrainian as their first language see the bill as a threat to sovereignty, keeping Ukraine in Russia’s sphere of influence after 20 years of independence following the break-up of the Soviet Union. As black-helmeted riot police moved to push the crowds back, Lytvyn himself tendered his resignation, ap-

parently siding with the opposition which complained of procedural irregularities. Yanukovich cancelled his briefing and called an urgent meeting with faction leaders and Lytvyn. He said Ukraine may have to hold an early parliamentary election if the crisis persisted. But since an election is already set for October 28, this seemed more of a rhetorical flourish by Yanukovich aimed at preventing the situation from undermining his own prestige. People in large swathes of Ukraine speak Russian as their mother tongue and the bill would recognise it as a regional language in predominantly Russian-speaking areas in the heavily industrialised east and southern regions such as Crimea.

New copy of America’s ‘birth certificate’ found A COPY of a rare 16th century map known as ‘the birth certificate of America’ has been discovered in Germany. The map, by the famous cartographer Martin Waldseemueller, is credited with being the first to document and name the newly-discovered land of America. It had been thought that Waldseemueller had only made four copies, but researchers at a Munich university have now discovered a fifth version. This new map was found in the pages of an unrelated 19th century book. Sven Kuttner, head of old books at

Munich’s Ludwig Maximilian University, said: “It seems to be a second edition and this is a unique map. Until now, we have no signs for a further map like this.” German researchers are going to make the map, printed in clear black ink on yellowing paper, available online A much larger version is already kept in the Library of Congress in Washington DC. It was given to the United States as a gift by German Chancellor Angela Merkel in 2007 to mark 500 years since

the naming of America. It is thought that Waldseemueller, a prominent 16th century map maker, used information from accounts of early transatlantic voyages to form a picture of America. The boomerang shape of the continent he drew is barely recognisable as the North and South America landmass we know today. Waldseemueller named the new land after Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci, thinking he had been the first to discover it rather than Christopher Columbus.

CERN scientists unveil ‘God particle’ milestone

By Jonathon Burch

Particle may be the basic building block of the universe (continued from front page) The model is for physicists what the theory of evolution is for biologists. What scientists don’t yet know from the latest findings is whether the particle they have discovered is the Higgs boson as described by the Standard Model, a variant of the Higgs or an entirely new subatomic particle that could force a rethink on the fundamental structure of matter. The last two possibilities are, in scientific terms, the most exciting. Professor Peter Higgs, the retired British physicist from Edinburgh University who lent his name to the particle, heard the announcement with other scientists at a packed seminar in Geneva. The 83-year-old professor hit on the concept of the Higgs mechanism in 1964 while walking in the Cairngorms. Known for his unassuming nature and shunning the limelight, he wiped away a tear as the historic significance of the findings became apparent.

Professor Peter Higgs, the retired British physicist from Edinburgh University who lent his name to the particle, heard the announcement with other scientists at a packed seminar in Geneva. He could now be eligible for a Nobel Prize “I am astounded at the amazing speed with which these results have emerged,” he said. “I never expected this to happen in my lifetime and shall be asking my family to put some champagne in the fridge.”

Prof Higgs could now be eligible for a Nobel Prize. CERN’s Large Hadron Collider is the largest scientific instrument ever built, and lies in an underground tunnel with a circumference of 17 miles which straddles the French-Swiss border near

Geneva. Protons, the “hearts” of atoms, are fired around the ring in opposite directions at almost the speed of light. When they smash together, huge amounts of energy are converted into mass and new particles created which then

decay into lighter particles. Higgs bosons emerge from the maelstrom but only very fleetingly - for less than a trillionth of a second - before decaying. By tracing the decay patterns, the scientists were able to find the “fingerprint” of the Higgs.

Five killed in German hostage standoff By Elisa Oddone FIVE people were shot dead after a gunman facing eviction seized hostages in an apartment in the southern German city of Karlsruhe yesterday, police said. The gunman, who possessed several hunting rifles, was thought to be among the dead, officers added. “Special forces broke into the apartment after smelling smoke and found four

dead bodies. Probably one of them is the gunman,” a police spokesman told Reuters. Police later said a fifth body had been also found and that one of the victims was a woman. They declined to comment on German media reports that the hostages included a bailiff and two other people who had accompanied him to the building, one of whom may have been a locksmith.

“They all died of gunshot wounds,” said the police spokesman. The smoke was so thick in the flat that “you couldn’t see your hand in front of your eyes”, the spokesman added. After shots were heard, officers from the police special response unit, some dressed in protective green suits and helmets, sealed off the area around the building in the north part of the city.

Karlsruhe, with nearly 300,000 inhabitants, is located near the French border and is home to Germany’s Constitutional Court. “I am deeply shocked by the deaths of five people, including a bailiff working as a justice official for Karlsruhe district court,” B a d e n -Wu e r t t e m b e r g ’ s Justice Minister Rainer Stickelberger said, according to Bild website. It was an “incomprehensible act,” he added.

TURKEY’S armed forces command said yesterday it had found the bodies of both pilots of an F-4 jet shot down by Syria last month and was trying to retrieve them from the seabed. Relations between Ankara and Damascus hit a new low after Syria shot down the Turkish reconnaissance plane over the Mediterranean on June 22, prompting a sharp rebuke from Turkey, which said it would respond “decisively”. Syria says it downed the jet in self-defence when it was inside Syrian airspace. Turkey says the plane accidentally violated Syrian airspace for a few minutes but was later brought down in international airspace. The military has been searching for the pilots and this week brought in a specialised ship to recover the wreckage of their plane, some 1,000 metres underwater. It named the pilots as Air Force Captain Gokhan Ertan and Air Force Lieutenant Hasan Huseyin Aksoy. The military did not specify where the bodies were found, but there has been no report that the pilots ejected from the plane. Turkey has heightened military activity along its border with Syria since the incident and scrambled F-16 fighter jets on three consecutive days in the past week after it spotted Syrian transport helicopters flying near the Turkish border. Ankara has said the shooting down would not go “unpunished” and summoned a meeting of its NATO allies shortly after the incident, but it has not retaliated. Both Syria and Turkey have said they do not want the incident to lead to an armed conflict. In an interview with Turkish paper Cumhuriyet published on Tuesday, Syrian president Bashar al-Assad said he wished his forces had not shot the jet down, repeating Damascus’ position they had not known the identity of the plane at the time. Turkey dismisses this assertion, saying the plane was unarmed, was not hiding its identity and was attacked without warning.

Business Mercedes sales growth drops to slowest pace

The world's top banks say they're not too big to fail

By Christiaan Hetzner

Federal Reserve, FDIC release public portions of 'living wills'

JUNE sales of MercedesBenz luxury cars grew at the slowest monthly rate so far this year as sales in the key market of China continued to increase at a tepid rate. Daimler said volumes of its premium brand rose 0.9 per cent in June, translating to a cumulative rise of 6.9 per cent in the first half to a record high 652,924 vehicles. "Over the next few months, the market launch of the new A-Class in particular will provide a further boost to sales. This means we are well on track this year to surpassing the 2011 sales record," said Mercedes sales chief Joachim Schmidt. In an interview published earlier in the day by Autogazette, Schmidt had blamed weak sales in China relative to larger rivals BMW and Audi on temporary factors such as model changeovers and a current lack of local production. He also said that Mercedes would begin catching up to the other brands once its new large volume compact family, which includes its A and B Class models, would be rolled out in sufficient numbers.

By Alexandra Alper and David Henry NINE of the largest global banks have expressed confidence they can be salvaged or dismantled without taxpayer bailouts if they became insolvent, as US regulators released public portions of these banks' ‘living wills’. The documents, required by the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial reform law, aim to end too-big-to-fail bailouts by mapping out ways that, in theory, mortally-wounded banks could go out of business without wrecking the financial system. If regulators find that the resolution plans are not credible, they could force the banks to sell off business lines and restructure to become less complex. But some experts doubt how hard regulators will push the banks for changes or how useful hypothetical resolution plans will be in major financial crisis. The public portions released are a few dozen pages per bank summarising thousands of pages submitted confidentially to regulators. The banks argued in the public documents that their resolution plans will work, with no cost to taxpayers or great consequence to the financial system. They used technical generalities in their conclusions without specifically addressing the unpredictable and vicious nature of a credit crisis. Bank of America Corp, for example, said in its plan that "certain assets and liabilities would be transferred to a bridge bank that would, subject to certain assumptions, emerge from resolution as a

Blanket government guarantees for the financial system and a $700 billion taxpayer bailout followed to ease the panic. This week’s disclosures give a glimpse of the kind of the kind of interconnections and complicated corporate structures that could still make governments fear letting big banks fail.

JPMorgan named 25 "material" legal entities and 30 "core business lines," as required by Dodd-Frank and listed 18 clearing or financial settlement systems in which it is a member or participant, half of which are outside of the United States. The full-length plans are believed to include the most comprehensive maps of the insides of bank holding companies ever created. They are intended to give regulators confidence that they understand enough of the consequences of bank failures to allow more to happen.

The club's fans have made their feelings clear to US owner Malcolm Glazer, whose 2005 takeover saddled the club with huge debt

MANCHESTER United has picked the New York Stock Exchange to make its stock market debut, ending months of speculation over where the world's best-supported football club would list. After first eyeing a Hong Kong IPO, the former English Premier League champions had planned a $1 billion listing in Singapore in the second half of last year before putting plans on hold because of market turmoil. The US-owned club filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission to raise up to $100 million in an initial public offering of its Class A ordinary shares in New York. In the United States, the amount of money a company says it plans to raise in its first IPO filings is used to calculate registration fees. The final size of the IPO could be different. Thomson Reuters publication IFR reported last month that the club, which has been

English champions a record 19 times and features players such as England's Wayne Rooney, had dropped its plans for an Asian listing in favour of a US listing. The company filing for a much lower amount than the $1 billion originally expected does not come as much of a surprise, said Josef Schuster, founder of Chicago-based financial services firmIPOX Schuster LLC. "The smaller the float, the higher the relative valuation can be...This may just be a strategy initially to make it appear like a low float IPO," Schuster said. "Traders may believe if the deal is very low, then the company can pop at the opening." Manchester United has a global fan base of 659 million, according to a survey commissioned by the club and carried out last year by market researcher Kantar. Almost half of United's supporters were in

the Asia-Pacific region. "It remains to be seen how much the football club is going to benefit in the US where the sport is not very popular ... The perfect place for it to have listed should have been London," Jay Ritter, a University of Florida IPO expert told Reuters. The club, founded in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR Football Club, plays its home games at Old Trafford in Greater Manchester. The club's American proprietors, the Glazer family, are well known in the United States as owners of American football team the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, they have faced opposition from United fans after taking over the club in 2005 in a leveraged buyout that left it saddled with hefty debt repayments. The club's total debt as on March 31 was £423.3 million, according to the filing.

Opinion

Troika’s arrival could mean jig is up for CoLA ONE OF the big union federations SEK yesterday issued a statement, declaring its opposition to “tough austerity” and that the workers “could not again provide the easy solution”. It concluded that “the competitiveness of the economy will not be strengthened only by lowering of the wages and benefits of the working class,” but failed to mention other ways of improving competitiveness. A day earlier, the head of the civil servants’ union PASYDY, was quoted as saying that “all our rights and benefits are the result of years of social dialogue and they cannot just be wiped away.” This notorious “social dialogue”, which over the years became a euphemism for the satisfaction of the most unreasonable demands of union bosses made a big contribution towards the erosion of competitiveness, was also mentioned in the SEK announcement. “In the past, critical economic and social matters were dealt with through social dialogue and consultation and the same must happen now,” it warned. The mighty unions, which had been calling the shots for decades with disastrous, long-term consequences for the economy and public finances, are sensing the game is up, but feel dutybound to make one last stand. Not even President Christofias, who never took a decision without first securing the approval of the union bosses, will be much help now that the troika has arrived to put right the imbalances and structural weaknesses of the economy that grew out of the “social dialogue”. It is thanks to the “social dialogue” that workers were receiving annual pay rises four and five percentage points above productivity increases and civil servants have been collecting princely pensions and retirement bonuses without contributing a cent towards them. Meanwhile “social dialogue” is currently under way with regard to the alleged reform of the Cost of Living Allowance. Both the government and the unions have been putting off the CoLA dialogue for months, deciding to engage in it only in the last couple of weeks in the hope that they can save this inflationary measure that has helped erode competitiveness and contributed to Cyprus’ very high cost of living. Even now, the bankrupt state wants employees on €5,000 a month to benefit, once a year, from CoLA, which is an indication of how out of touch government and unions are. CoLA will be abolished by the troika without “social dialogue or consultations”. In fact the precarious situation to which the economy has been led by irresponsible union bosses, weak business leaders and populist politicians engaging in “social dialogue”, is the best argument for ending it.

Towards a Europe of justice and of growth C

YPRUS is taking over the European Union’s rotating presidency at a crucial juncture for European integration: the financial and sovereign debt crisis has triggered a very necessary debate about where we stand in Europe and where we are headed. The crisis is of course first and foremost about finances, about economic imbalances and about the debt accumulated by national governments. However, at the end of the day, all politics, whether at EU or national level, is there in the interests of the citizen. We are not governing for the markets - we are governing for our citizens. It is our citizens who make our democracies work. Regaining their trust in our institutions and our markets is therefore indispensable in this endeavour. Justice policies can be a key driver both in helping rebuild trust among citizens and in reinforcing our strategy for economic growth. We have a momentous opportunity to advance on these two fronts: justice for growth and justice for citizens. The growth objective will be at the heart of the EU’s Justice Agenda. The full potential of the internal market remains unexploited, and we want to do our part to ensure that this does not continue. One way to contribute to this objective is through the modernisation of our data protection rules. The Commission has recently proposed new rules to remove barriers to the internal market which exist because of a labyrinthine and divergent patchwork of rules in the 27 EU countries. The modernisation of EU rules on data protection will create a ‘level playing field’ within the EU. One single law for the entire European continent will allow companies to exploit our gold mine, the single market, with 500 million potential customers. The new data protection rules are also much simpler and drastically reduce the administrative burden of current rules: they create, for example, a ‘one-stopshop’ for enforcement. Businesses and consumers will only have to deal with one single national data protection authority, not 27. Data protection authorities will co-operate on issues with a wider European impact, thus

Comment Viviane Reding and Loucas Louca ensuring that all Europeans can trust that their rights are protected throughout the EU, wherever their data is processed and no matter where they live. This will improve citizens’ trust in online services which in turn can boost our digital economy. In a similar vein, we are also committed to making strong progress on the proposals for the European Account Preservation Order, to facilitate crossborder trade. Our common aim is to put an end to today’s situation where, in 63% of all cases, businesses cannot recover debt incurred through cross-border transactions. This is why we want to find agreement on a simple and effective European Account Preservation Order. Another innovative way of responding to the crisis and improving Europe’s competitiveness is to secure a better balance between women and men in economic decision-making positions. Studies have shown that gender diversity pays off and companies with higher percentages of women on corporate boards

We’re asking citizens to help set the policy agenda for years to come perform better than those with all-male boards. The economic case for getting more women into the workforce and more women into top jobs in the EU is overwhelming. We can only reach our economic and employment goals by making full use of all our human resources –

ON THIS DAY JULY 5

We can live, travel, study, work, shop or retire anywhere in the EU both in the labour market as a whole and at the top. The issue will remain high on the agenda with aim to identify common strategies in this field. These are just a few examples of how, together, we are building a European area of justice and growth. Citizens are at the heart of all Union policies. Today, we have common rights for European Union citizens to live, travel, study, work, shop or retire anywhere in the EU. And we are continuing to deliver: one example is our efforts to guarantee common fair trial for suspected and accused persons everywhere in the Union. The right to translation and interpretation and the right to a letter of rights in criminal proceedings have already become law. Next on the agenda are the right to a lawyer in criminal cases and improved protection for the 75 million people who become victims of serious crime every year. We will work hand in hand to turn these proposals into a reality during the six months to come. In doing so, the European Union is laying the building blocks of a European area of justice and growth for its citizens, offering practical solutions to cross border problems. And

what about the future? Many people continue to face obstacles when exercising their rights. In the biggest ever EU public consultation on citizens’ rights we are now asking everyone – 499 million European citizens – what barriers they face in exercising their rights as EU citizens, be it when travelling in Europe, when voting or standing as a candidate in elections or when shopping online. We’re asking citizens to help set the policy agenda for the years to come and shape the future of their Europe. The consultation runs until 9 September, so have your say now with just one click of a mouse: http://ec.europa.eu/ justice/opinion/your-rights-yourfuture/ The European Union is there because of and to serve its citizens. People expect concrete results from Europe, and with better rights for crime victims and crime suspects as well as stronger data protection rules, that is exactly what we will be delivering. Viviane Reding is European Commission Vice-President and EU Justice Commissioner, and Loucas Louca is the Cypriot Minister of Justice

Showbiz Eric Sykes, 89, dies after a short illness ERIC Sykes, a popular comic actor has died, his manager said yesterday. He was 89. In a career spanning more than 50 years, he was a regular collaborator on the popular 1950s radio comedy programme The Goon Show and became a leading star in television during the following two decades. “Eric Sykes...died peacefully this morning after a short illness,” his manager Norma Farnes said. “His family were with him.” Recognisable by his heavy, black-rimmed glasses, Sykes wrote material for comedian Frankie Howerd and his successful radio show Variety Bandbox between 1944 and 1952. That led to further radio work, including the groundbreaking Goon Show, as well as leading television projects including The Howerd Crowd and The Tony Hancock Show. Between 1960 and 1965, he became a big hit with the public in Sykes and a..., in which he played alongside Hatti Jacques in a brother-sister act.

Tom Cruise seemingly does the impossible, and gets well paid for it even at 50

Cruise tops list of high earners in Hollywood man Adam Sandler, 45, both with $37 million. DiCaprio’s earnings dropped after his 2010 Inception, grossed $825 million at the global box office while his last film, J. Edgar disappointed at the box office. Sandler’s income included his paycheck from 2011 film Jack and Jill. Former professional wrestler Dwayne The Rock Johnson, 40, came in fourth, earning $36 million including from his film Fast Five that took in $626 million worldwide, and at No. 5 was comedian Ben Stiller with $33 million, whose next film The Watch about a group of Neighborhood Watch dads, is due for release.

...AND THE REST Sacha Baron Cohen, Johnny Depp and Will Smith also made the list, each making an estimated $30 million. Mark Wahlberg, who can next be seen sharing the screen with a foul-mouthed teddy bear in Ted, followed with $27 million. Twilight heartthrobs Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner shared a spot after making $26.5 million each from the blood-sucking saga and other projects, including R-Patz’ film Water For Elephants and Taylor’s action-thriller Abduction. In compiling the list, Forbes considers factors including upfront pay, profit participation, residuals, endorsements and advertising work.

He took on a variety of supporting roles in films, but is perhaps best remembered for a virtually dialogue-free film called The Plank (1967) in which he and Tommy Cooper appeared as two workmen delivering planks to a building site. He was still appearing on the stage in his 80s, despite being almost totally deaf and blind.

Spider-Man swings to $7.5m late-night debut

Mission Impossible star earns $75m in past year TOM Cruise leads Forbes’ annual list of the 100 highest paid actors, earning nearly twice that of second place Leonardo DiCaprio and recapturing his spot among Hollywood’s top-earning performers after his recent blockbuster movie Mission: Impossible. Cruise, who turned 50years-old on Tuesday amid speculation over whether his box office pull could be hurt by his impending divorce from Katie Holmes, which was revealed late last week, earned $75 million between May 2011 and May 2012, Forbes said. The star is coming under close scrutiny after Holmes filed for divorce and sought sole custody of their young daughter, Suri. Some have questioned his affiliation with the Church of Scientology, including media mogul Rupert Murdoch, who likened its practices to a cult. Forbes said Cruise in particular had enjoyed a successful year after Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol, released last December, earned more than $700 million at global box offices. His career resurgence followed negative publicity several years ago due to a couch-jumping episode on Oprah Winfrey’s talk show and some rambling thoughts on Scientology in media interviews and in a YouTube video. Last year’s top earner DiCaprio, 37, tied for second place on the list with funny-

Happier times for the Cruise family

Tom, Katie, Suri and the influence of Scientology CRUISE and Holmes’ marriage was allegedly affected by his relationship with Scientology leader David Miscavige. Miscavige who heads the sci-fi cult, of which Cruise is a devotee - was best man at the couple’s wedding, and sources have claimed their intense friendship is one of the reasons they grew apart. A source told The Sun newspaper: “Miscavige and Tom are joined at the hip. Tom runs every important decision in his life by him. “Tom really values his opinion and Katie often felt like she came in second place. When it became clear how much influence he had over her husband she knew she had to get away.” Miscavige is said to have given many lavish gifts to Cruise, including an aircraft hanger for his private jet and a custom-built luxury coach. Holmes 33, filed for divorce from Cruise last Thursday, and one of her reasons is because she feared their six-year-old daughter Suri would be heavily influenced by Scientology if she stayed in the relationship. Holmes was raised a Christian, but did partake in the

Scientologist practice of ‘Auditing’ - a process which sees an individual confess their life experiences to an auditor in a bid to free themselves from unwanted psychological barriers - although “she was never completely committed to Scientology”. Reports yesterday said Holmes had rejected Cruise’s plea for her to fly to Iceland to save their marriage last week. A source told Usmagazine.com: “He begged her to go to Iceland for one last try at reconciliation. She refused and a huge fight ensued.” Cruise’s lawyer has stated the star hasn’t made any decisions on how he will fight Holmes’ request for sole custody of Suri and is currently considering his options. Cruise is believed to have flown back from Iceland to the US yesterday. It has been claimed Katie ended their five-year union because she was concerned he wanted to send Suri to the Sea Organisation - a floating Scientology school. Those on board the ship are required to commit themselves to the sect for a billion years and allegedly asked to disconnect from any non-believers.

A MOVIE reboot of the Spider-Man franchise snared $7.5 million in its web at US and Canadian theatres from screenings just after midnight on Tuesday, distributor Sony Pictures said. The opening for The Amazing Spider-Man starring Andrew Garfield as the swinging superhero matched the midnight sales for Sony’s last movie in the franchise, Spider-Man 3, in 2007. About $1.4 million of the new film’s opening sales came from showings on giant Imax screens, Sony said. The midnight total ranked below this year’s blockbuster, The Avengers, which pulled in $18.7 million at its May opening, but ahead of June sci-fi thriller Prometheus with $3.6 million. Those movies, however, opened closer to the weekend. Sony debuted Spider-Man on Tuesday to pull in moviegoers taking time off around Wednesday’s July 4 holiday in the United States. The studio projects domestic ticket sales of $110 million to $120 million from Tuesday through the weekend. Sony spent about $215 million to produce the 3D film.

Naomi Watts stars as Princess Diana in new film

Watts captures look of a princess NAOMI Watts captures the look of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, as she recreates her famous half-smile for a new role. Wearing diamond earrings and a dazzling necklace the Britishborn actress is seen in the first official photograph since filming began this week on the movie Diana. The film - which had previously been known as Caught In Flight - follows the princess during the final two years of her life. Diana died in 1997 in a Paris car crash and her death touched the nation. Speaking from the movie set, Oscar-nominated Watts said: “I’m excited and honoured to be playing the role of a truly remarkable woman, who had such a positive and profound impact in so many ways.” Other British stars to appear in the film - directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel - include Naveen Andrews, Douglas Hodge and Juliet Stevenson. It will be filmed over the next nine weeks.

Hilux sets new performance record in a Polar challenge New extreme test sees brand take on Antarctica THE traditional Hilux vehicle, already recognised for its ability to overcome extreme tests, began a new chapter in the history of polar exploration, covering 70,000 kilometres in one of coldest and most hostile environments on the planet. The Antarctic programme highlight was a double intercontinental passage organised by the Extreme World Races. A new world record was broken by 3 Hilux vehicles, including 2 6CH6 versions, covering 9.500 kilometres each. Overall the trip covered nearly 30,000 kilometres, making it the longest in Antarctica. From November 2011 to February 2012, a group of people equipped with 10 Hilux vehicles were tasked with building a fuel storage area, installing a weather station and providing support to scientific expeditions and a ski race. Tomorrow Other Events Let the races begin!

Tomorrow evening, young cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan and his mother, renowned pianist Gayane Akhnazaryan will join forces to give a mesmerising recital at The Shoe Factory in Nicosia. Born in 1988 in Yerevan, Armenia, Hakhnazaryan grew up in a family of musicians, his father a violinist and member of the Komitas Quartet, his mother a pianist, and two older brothers, one a conductor and the other a pianist. As a young boy he wanted to play football, but his parents had other ideas, and his mother guided him to the cello, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise. His early studies were at the Sayat-Nova School of Music in Yerevan with Zareh Sarkisyan. At the age of 12, Hakhnazaryan began studies at the Moscow Conservatory with Alexey Seleznyov. Working with Laurence Lesser, he received an Artist Diploma from the New England Conservatory of Music in 2011. Powerful playing and poetic performances catapulted the Armenian cellist to fame and at just 24 years old he is already a seasoned performer in firstrate concert halls with major orchestras around the world. Hailed as a “seasoned phenom” by The Washington Post, Hakhnazaryan’s intense creativity has critics reaching for new superlatives to describe his “commanding ... gorgeous” performances of “daredevil

verve”, (The New York Times) guaranteeing his place among the world’s most sought-after young musicians. The International Tchaikovsky Competition, which is held once every four years, is considered to be one of the most significant cultural events of Russia. In 2011, three young geniuses from Russia and Armenia won. Hakhnazaryan was among them. Hakhnazaryan was embroiled in a controversy earlier in the competition when Mark Gorenstein, artistic director of the Svetlanov State Symphony Orchestra, used what was reported to be a racial slur against the cellist during rehearsals. Following his Gold Medal win he has planned a busy agenda – that will take him to stages in China, Great Britain, Russia with popular artists. Recently he was invited by Valery Gergiev to be a soloist for a concert with the Mariinsky Orchestra at the Warsaw Beethoven Festival and to participate in the forthcoming Baden-Baden Festival this month. For tomorrow’s recital Hakhnazaryan will have a brilliant pianist, his mother Gayane Akhnazaryan, to support his level of artistry, in a classic cello and piano repertoire filled with beauty, poignancy and drama. Akhnazaryan graduated from the Yerevan Conservatory and has had an international career performing in Russia, China,

Japan and throughout Europe. She regularly performs the premieres of many chamber music compositions by Armenian composers, as well creating several transcriptions for piano duo compositions. She made a number of archive recordings and has also released a CD in the United States. She is one of the founders of the Hakhnazaryan Trio with whom she has performed at a number of international music festivals. In addition, Gayane is a professor at the Yerevan State Conservatory and has also been made professor at the Academic Musical College at the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory. The programme will begin with Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata in A minor and Chopin’s Introduction and Polonaise Brillante in C major Op 3. Following the short interval, will be Ysaye’s only solo cello work, the Sonata Op 28 with the recital ending with the well-known Franck Sonata which dates from 1886.

NIGHTLIFE Ferrer gets back on the decks While the sun keeps on shining, the DJs keep on spinning. Next week sees the likes of true house legend Dennis Ferrer hit the decks of Ammos Beach Bar in Larnaca. Ferrer has had a controversial year, making headlines after wrongfully being kicked off the decks at Miami nightclub Mansion when he failed to play house music that the management deemed “commercial” enough. Ammos Beach Bar, however, has no intention of telling this house music master what to do when he gets into a groove. The famous producer of house music hits such as ‘Hey Hey’ sees the DJ/producer/label owner dropping dance floor bombs for your aural pleasure. For those who may not know,

Ferrer carries the torch for house music. From his techno roots to gospel house and Afro sounds, he has been crafting dance records with a healthy dose of soul since the mid ’90s. This soulful house music veteran has worked with an impressive roster of house music legends, and his work has been remixed by a list of equally impressive artists. He is the owner of the world-renowned Objektivity record label and has an extensive and loyal following that includes over 100,000 Facebook fans. Reportage France and Algeria inch closer, fifty years on Fifty years after Algerian independence, Hollande finally seems ready to express regret over one of France’s bloodiest episodes in its colonial history Above: a member of the ‘pieds noirs’ (‘black feet’) - North African-born Europeans By John Irish and repatriated after independence. France’s new president, Francois Hollande (inset), finally appears ready to express regret over one of the bloodiest episodes in its colonial history. The trauma of the 1954-1962 Algerian war, in which hundreds of thousands were killed or uprooted, left deep scars in both societies, stalling a potential economic and political partnership that could help revive the Mediterranean basin. France’s Socialist president has an affinity with Algeria, where he spent eight months working at the French embassy in 1978 and has regularly returned. With the 50th anniversary of Algerian independence today, July 5, Hollande’s election in May has rekindled hopes for an elusive reconciliation. “Now that he has taken power, we are expecting action,” said Algerian Minister for War Veterans Mohamed Cherif Abbes. Before winning the presidency, 57-year-old Hollande suggested it was time to turn the page on France’s 132-year Algerian colonial history, although he stopped short of promising the formal apology many in Algeria want to hear. “Today, between an apology that was never made, and forgetting, which is to be condemned, there is scope for taking a frank and responsible view of our colonial past,” Hollande wrote in a column for Algerian newspaper Al-Watan in March. The war of independence cost the lives of 1.5 million Algerians, the Algerian government says, and it has pushed for Paris to admit its part in the massacre of 45,000 Algerians who took to the streets to

demand independence as Europe celebrated victory over Nazi Germany in 1945. French government officials declined to speak directly on the matter, highlighting the sensitivity of ties. But diplomats are working to crystallise Hollande’s position ahead of an expected visit to Algeria this year that would be the first by a French president since Nicolas Sarkozy in 2007. He has already promised to break with Sarkozy’s immigration and security policies, seen by many as stigmatising France’s 5 million Muslims, who are mostly of Algerian

our history. If we managed it with the Germans, then it’s a piece of cake with the Algerians,” said Pascal Blanchard, an expert on colonial history at the research centre CNRS in Marseille. While there is a desire in Paris to turn the page, Hollande can only go so far before facing serious questions at home. Just as the Algerian community feels stigmatised, many so-called “pieds noirs” (“black feet”) - North African-born Europeans repatriated after independence - and Muslim “harkis” who fought in the French army against Algerian

‘Today, between an apology that was never made, and forgetting, which is to be condemned, there is scope for taking a frank and responsible view of our colonial past’ origin. “Now is the time. We must take initiatives and can’t let this moment pass,” said JeanPierre Chevenement, a former defence minister who heads the Franco-Algerian Association. “The government is ready, as is the president.” In the run-up to the anniversary, both sides agreed not to organise official events. Even an exhibition in Paris, the first in France showing the use of torture by its soldiers, caused consternation among diplomats worried about reopening old wounds. “We don’t share the same memories, but we can share

insurgents, oppose a formal apology. Some say it is to them that the French government should apologise and provide compensation. In one letter sent to this 2 million-strong community during the campaign, Hollande promised neither “amnesia nor repentance”. He had also previously said that it was useful for France to offer an official apology to the Algerian people. “Politicians ... write any old thing to keep us happy,” said 82-year-old Gerard Perrin, a fifth-generation ‘pied noir’ who received two letters from

A scene from Gillo Pontecorvo’s Battle for Algiers. The film was made just after Algerian independence from France and focuses upon the battle for the capital city in 1957, which although a failure for the National Liberation Front at the time, sowed the seeds for the eventual withdrawal of France Hollande earlier this year. “Nobody has done anything for us. With President Abdelaziz Bouteflika in power, I don’t think any compromise is possible.” In Algeria, the government lets independence-era heroes act as its mouthpiece. Many of these veterans demand compensation from France, a law criminalising colonialism and p gy from Paris a formal apology ing Hollande’s expressuggesting sion of regret might not be enough. The case is complex e Paris treated Algeria because as an administrative unit of France itself and attempted ate the territory’s own to negate history and culture, leaving a legacy of bitterness. ave to transcend the dif“We have ficulties of the past to give our efforts a solid base that resists d the turbulence of histime and ich does not forget our tory which bjective to develop our main objective s,” Bouteflika said in a relations,” special 50th anniversary edition of French daily Le Monde. 3-year-old made no The 73-year-old ds for an apology, but demands wantted “new impetus” said he wanted eral in bilateral ation co-operation in the spirit of a failed agreement he had drafted mer with former nt Jacques President n 2003 as a roadmap Chirac in nciliation. for reconciliation. c had his administration Chirac

craft a Franco-Algerian friendship treaty in the same vein as one with Germany after World War Two. In his memoirs, he said his efforts failed because Algeria had insisted on a full apology. “We have no hatred towards the French people, but we have the right to ask France to recognise the crimes of colonial France and then apolog , said Tayeb y gise,” Al Houari,, secretary-general of the National Organisation of Children of the Martyrs. The Algerian government has never explicitly formulated a demand for an apology and there are differences of opinion within Algeria. In 2010, for example a bill proposed by 125 lawmakers to criminalise French colonialism never made it through parliament. “Does

the Algerian government really want a formal apology? From what I have understood, Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia did not support it and that’s why this bill failed,” said Guy Perville, a historian on French-Algerian relations. “If they abandon this, then it opens the door to a compromise.” The National Liberation Front that has ruled Algeria for the past 50 years won a parliamentary election in May, going against the tide of the “Arab Spring” which has transformed the political landscape in many

neighbouring countries, although there is still wrangling about who will be the next prime minister. Hollande has much to gain from improving ties with Algiers, as it struggles to integrate its Muslim minority. Many second- and third-generation Muslims of North African origin feel alienated in their country of birth. Bariza Khiari, the Algerianborn Socialist vice-president of France’s upper house of parliament, says Hollande will try to

tackle that by providing more visas to Algerians, facilitating socio-economic and cultural exchanges and easing naturalisation. “We have emerged from a long, difficult political period for immigrant and Muslim populations in France,” she said. “These are small things that will make a big difference every day.” At a time when France is stifled by a lack of growth and the eurozone debt crisis, better ties could bring stronger trade links, not just with Algeria but in the

wider Mediterranean. Flush with oil and gas resources, Algeria is the largest Francophone country outside France itself, yet annual trade exchanges with the former Colonial power hover at a mere 10 billion euros ($12.7 billion). “The future is positive but the path will be tortuous,” Algeria’s ex-prime minister Sid Ahmed Ghozali said. “We should ... look at ties not from an intellectual and moral perspective, but through the interests of the people.”

PICK OF THE DAY

Opening Ceremony of the EU Council Presidency (CyBC2, 20.00) Why are we Picking this? Rude not to, really. When Cyprus takes over the EU for six months, telling those Europeans exactly what to do and where to get off - and the Opening Ceremony is shown live on CyBC for one and a half hours - it’s only good manners to make it our Pick of the Day. Admittedly, a vox-pop in last week’s Sunday Mail showed mixed reactions to the whole EU Presidency thing. “It’s not important to me, but it is in terms of the community we live in,” said a bookshop owner - which is fair enough but probably too muted and half-hearted for our politicians, who’ve been going on (and on) about this six-month tenure. Let’s clean up our cities, EU visitors are coming! Let’s fix the pavements and carry out roadworks (inconveniencing the people who actually live here), EU visitors are coming! Let’s prepare thousands of goodie bags containing “silver jewellery inspired by Cyprus’ past, locally designed silk scarves and a bottle of traditional booze” (as well as a sachet of Cypriot basil!) for those nice EU visitors. Is it wrong to point out that the EU Council Presidency isn’t really such a big deal, mostly a matter of chairing meetings and asking people to read the minutes of the last meeting? (OK, we’re supposed to promote and enforce EU policies as well - but our guys in Brussels presumably do that anyway.)

Am I being a non-patriotic party-pooper if I remind everyone that the thing is a rota, all EU members do it, and there’s no particular honour attached to being the one whose turn has come? Denmark did it previously, Ireland will be doing it from January. We’ll be doing it again in 2026 or thereabouts, if the EU still exists. Thereby hangs a tale, of course - and maybe that’s the problem, that politicians love the EU (and assume it’ll go on and on) whereas ordinary people are a lot more ambivalent. Today’s ceremony is all about politics: even the choice of venue is political - Curium Amphitheatre, technically part of the British Bases, the hidden message of holding the ceremony there being that it’s still part of Cyprus, Bases be damned. Politicians will make speeches, albeit only three-minute speeches, starting with President Christofias (hopefully he’ll cope with being limited to three minutes), followed by Barroso and other EU honchos, then we’ll get a “cultural programme” which is all about Cyprus (hence, again, political). No special reason to watch if you’re not a politician, but the chance to set the EU agenda and boss those presumptuous Europeans around for six months is obviously cause for celebration. Finally! Our chance to solve the Cyprus Problem!...

Starsky & Hutch (Novacinema2, 20.10) Such a feeble comedy, and nothing to do with the 70s cop show - but it merits a tiny footnote in the annals of comedy for Ben Stiller’s “Do it!” guy, a kind of deepvoiced Dustin Hoffman impression that punctuates the simplest request with a peremptory “Do it!” (to a waitress asking what he’d like to drink: “Johnny Red, neat. Do it! Do it!”). Stiller is Starsky, Owen Wilson is Hutch, a pair of 70s cops racing to the scene of the crime in their red-and-white Ford Torino - but the only crime is how little the fi lm does with this promising material, totally whiffi ng on 70s ambience and pounding the whole gay-subtext joke into the ground. What you’re left with is a disco dance-off, a scene in a biker bar, Snoop Dogg as ‘Huggy Bear’, Vince Vaughn as a smooth criminal, plus an air of scattershot comedy that veers from pastiche to irrelevance. Don’t do it! Made in 2004.

Kung Fu Panda 2 (Novacinema1, 20.20) I’ve got bad news, and I’ve got worse news. Not only is Kung Fu Panda 2 a formulaic sequel to the fi rst KFP (a surprise smash-hit about a panda with a penchant for kung-fu), but Nova are showing the dubbed-into-Greek version so you don’t even get Jack Black’s amusing bluster as Po, the panda in question - or indeed Gary Oldman as Shen the peacock, an evil despot haunted by a prophecy that he’ll someday be vanquished by “a warrior of black and white”. Shen does a King Herod on pandas, trying to pre-empt the prophecy, but baby Po escapes the panda-cide and grows into his goofy self though the joke of a kung-fu panda may have run its course, especially since Po is now a warrior so the fi lm is less comic and more action-packed. Made in 2011.

Water for Elephants (Novacinema1, 22.00) It’s Robert Pattinson, a cuddly toy for the world’s teenage girls - though his leading lady is considerably older in this likeable drama, Reese Witherspoon as Marlena, wife of the tyrannical boss (Christoph Waltz) of a travelling circus. It’s the 1930s and Robert joins the circus after losing both his parents in a car accident, shovelling manure and almost getting mauled by lions but enjoying himself nonetheless, mostly thanks to Reese and a Polish-speaking, champagne-quaffi ng elephant named Rosie. A romantic triangle ensues (with Reese and Waltz, not the elephant), the voice-over does its best to inject sexual tension, and the fuzzy anti-Fascist subtext comes a distant second to Pattinson’s rather moist presence; the result is dopey to the point of being charming, with a cute pachyderm and a nasty villain. Made in 2011.

ARIES March 21 - April 20

LEO July 23 - August 22

SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21

Planetary opposition could affect your emotions, particularly if a loved one tells you bluntly what they think. It could be true or it might be a misunderstanding. Either way, to handle the heat, you should keep your diplomacy intact. Being as flexible and laid back as possible, could make a potentially fraught situation into something so much better.

So long as you steer clear of life’s proverbial obstacle race, you won’t become the object of other people’s target practice. It maybe this is a time of not what you say, but how. Create a middle way by refusing to take sides. You like to be heard and you like to be seen as fair and helpful. To ensure this is how things unfold, a light touch can work best.

You don’t always find it easy to meet others half way - unless the subject is close to your heart. But consider this, do you think you would benefit from a little more giving than taking? Avoiding stresses and strains is never easy, but a spirit of co-operation can help. If you venture out today, a day trip can connect you to some memorable scenery.

TAURUS April 21 - May 21

VIRGO August 23 - September 23

CAPRICORN December 22 - January 20

It is still as true as ever to say that a problem shared, is a problem halved. Whatever you rearrange could alter the way others see things, so share your plans and pool whatever ideas are floated. Despite some soul searching, this will make things much easier to handle, so follow what you feel to be right, rather than what you think you should do.

You’re determined to reshuffle your routines and make a fresh start on those items and ideas which can advance your desires. Put today’s ambitious planets to work. Whatever you lose, miss or fail to start, keep everything in proportion. You will gain as long as you eliminate any confusion. Practical as it may seem, patience can bring its rewards.

You are rarely satisfied unless you can get to the bottom of a problem or mystery. Today, sorting out at least one personal puzzle will depend on your energy and initiative. Current astro vibes signal a time of progress, but this won’t happen completely randomly. Look to reach out, you’ll feel less restricted as important connections are made.

GEMINI May 22 - June 21

LIBRA September 24 - October 23

AQUARIUS January 21 - February 19

Not everyone will appreciate your upbeat style, yet some will, and something you suggest could prove very appealing to closer friends - be it a day out or your enthusiasm for a useful gadget. There is so much in the melting pot, so do play your most persuasive cards. The planets boast good vibes, so be confident, and ignore those you dazzle too much.

Resist the urge to overdo things. Rather than trying to prove anything, show your skills in a relaxed, confident way. Whatever comes to the fore, take a firm grip and be optimistic. Your zodiac sign is renowned for its communication skills, so the more adaptable you are, the better the results. If the life you are living is true to your beliefs, carry on.

It’s probably best not to assume you have all the answers, or on one thorny issue, that you are entirely right. Today, and the week ahead, could see you tangled in a web of disagreements. Look for distractions from elsewhere. Spare time activities and meeting those on your own wavelength can certainly help to reassure that none of this is personal.

CANCER June 22 - July 22

SCORPIO October 24 - November 22

PISCES February 20 - March 20

You might be finding this a somewhat puzzling period Cancer, but no matter what makes you cautious, keep the faith. You will feel even happier if you focus on tactful resistance. Spending quality time with open-minded people will help, and this can help to strengthen your position, should you encounter anyone more awkward or draining.

Escapism could be an ideal tonic today. There maybe things on your mind, and recent events haven’t made life any easier. You need some space to take a deep, healing breath and relax into an imaginatively creative hobby. You will feel even happier if you can take your mind off pressures like this, or simply by sharing some fun moments with friends.

Double check, to ensure that you have given a particular project all your attention. This will guarantee that you have covered all aspects, giving it a greater chance of success. You may be obliged to shoulder added responsibilities. However, with care and forethought, you may find a difficulty could be turned to your advantage. Be cool, calm and collected!

Wimbledon Azarenka aiming to end Williams run

Djokovic exudes air of invincibility after Mayer romp

By John Skilbeck

German no match for defending champion By Toby Davis THERE was an air of invincibility about Novak Djokovic as he cruised into the Wimbledon semi-finals with a second-gear victory over Florian Mayer yesterday. His dominance over the German was reflected in the 6-4 6-1 6-4 scoreline and in the manner of a performance that set up a last-four clash with 16-time grand slam champion Roger Federer. The Serb was not at his brilliant best and did not need to be to dispatch the world number 29 who laboured to stay in the match, but never looked like inflicting a decisive blow. The defending champion was broken in the opening set and handed multiple break-point opportunities to his opponent in the third, but every time Mayer threatened to turn the screw, Djokovic stepped up the quality. The early break came when Djokovic was still adjusting his sights to the conditions on Court One, having played his last three matches under the cover of the Centre Court roof. “I had a little trouble ad-

‘I’ve never played Federer on grass, so I think it’s going to be interesting for both of us to see what happens’ justing to the sun and to outdoor conditions,” he told reporters. “So it took me a bit of time to get into the rhythm.” When he found that rhythm in the second set he was unstoppable, flying through it on fast forward with a double break. Mayer held on to the Serb’s coat tails in the third, but Djokovic broke in the ninth game and finished him off with an ace.

“It’s not impossible, but if you don’t take the chances you get, you cannot beat world number one. That’s it,” was Mayer’s take on a match in which he spurned seven of eight break points. The top seed has eased into the semi-finals with a series of routine victories and is likely to face his first real challenge against Federer tomorrow. The Swiss enjoyed an even easier semi-final workout than Djokovic, dismantling Mikhail Youzhny in straight sets. Djokovic goes into the match with the psychological edge having won six of their last seven meetings but they are yet to face each other on grass. “Most of our matches that we play against each other are very close and very few points decide the winner,” Djokovic said. “I won two years in a row against him with match points down, so I can’t really say I’ve been winning comfortably those matches. “That’s what I expect in the next one, as well. As I said, we never played on grass, so I think it’s going to be interesting for both of us to see what happens.”

Emotional: world number one Novak Djokovic shows how much the win means to him

Relieved Tsonga sees off dogged Kohlschreiber in engrossing battle By Alison Wildey

Crowd-pleaser: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga performed his trademark victory celebrations after sealing his place in the semis

FRANCE’S Jo-Wilfried Tsonga reached his second successive Wimbledon semi-final with a 7-6 4-6 7-6 6-2 win over German Philipp Kohlschreiber yesterday. A relieved Tsonga performed his victory twirl around Court One after breaking Kohlschreiber for the second time in the fourth set to win an engrossing but sometimes scrappy encounter in two hours 48 minutes. The fifth seed sealed victory on his first match point after rushing to the net and firing a forehand crosscourt winner. “It was difficult today. Philipp played well, he served well, he was better

than me on the baseline, he was very aggressive,” Tsonga said. “But I’m through, and I’m happy. It doesn’t matter who I play in the semi-final. It’s a second chance after last year. Tsonga, who lost to Djokovic in the semis last year, will next meet British fourth seed Andy Murray. The 27-year-old Frenchman took a while to get into his stride, struggling with his first serve and forehand which went straight into the net more times than he will care to remember. One occasion unfortunately coincided with a huge cheer from Centre Court, where Murray and Ferrer were locked in battle, to the amusement of the watching fans.

For three sets, 27th seed Kohlschreiber was a match for his higher ranked opponent and appeared happy to come into the net or to slug it out from the baseline with Tsonga. The German saved five break points in the third set, three thanks to Tsonga netting forehands, and the final with a delectable backhand volley at the net. But Tsonga, who had a 5-1 career record against Kohlschreiber, took the tiebreak when his opponent netted and that seemed to galvanise the French number one. He raced through the fourth set, breaking Kohlschreiber for a 3-1 lead and the German sent a forehand long to set up matchpoint for Tsonga.

VICTORIA Azarenka is aiming to make history rather than dwell on the past as she prepares to battle Serena Williams for a place in the Wimbledon final. If world number two Azarenka has flown under the radar during this fortnight, it is only because she has made such impressive, untroubled progress. While a host of her rivals have been flapping and falling, Azarenka has shown little in the way of fragility. The Belarusian is the only semi-finalist yet to have dropped a set, and until a dramatic finale to her last-eight clash with Tamira Paszek, decided on a secondset tie-break on Tuesday night, she had not been pushed at all. There is little question that will change today, with Williams demonstrating in her quarter-final against last year’s winner Petra Kvitova that the bigger the occasion, the greater the threat she poses. Azarenka knows all about Williams’ Wimbledon record: the four titles from six finals in a decade of dominance shared with sister Venus. She is well aware, too, that Williams has won seven of their eight past meetings. However the 22-year-old from Minsk is not flinching as the imposing figure of the American looms. “I don’t really like to look back in history,” she said, “because every time you step on the court it’s a new story. “You kind of write your own history every time. “I’ve lost to her most of the time. But I think we played once here only.” That encounter came three years ago, when Williams won for the loss of five games against a teenage Azarenka in the quarterfinals. “She’s a great champion,” Azarenka said. “It’s going to be a tough match no matter what. But that’s what you kind of expect to have in the semifinals. We had good matches. We had bad matches. We’ll see.” The obvious objective for Azarenka is to carry off the title. The bonus, should she achieve that, will be her return to world number one status, which she occupied after winning her maiden grand slam at the Australian Open in January. And Williams, who has been irritated by the ranking system over the years, has no doubt Azarenka is the real deal. “She’s playing unbelievable. I think she’s played so well this year,” Williams said. “Already having a grand slam under her belt is really great. She did it in such style, so it’s not going to be easy.”

Heard the joke about England being better than Italy? Just ask FIFA ENGLAND’S efforts at the European Championships may not have won them any silverware, but it has secured them an impressive move up the FIFA world rankings, two places to the No.4 spot. Roy Hodgson’s side performed admirably given the circumstances in Poland and Ukraine but few would believe that only Spain, Germany and Uruguay are better than them. The Three Lions rank above Portugal who made it to the Euro semi-finals and two places above the Italians who were beaten finalists after comfortably seeing off England in the quarter-finals.

Italy did jump up six places in the world governing bodies’ latest chart but World Cup 2014 hosts Brazil would seem to have paid the highest price. The Brazilians have dropped out of the top ten and are now ranked 11, one place above Greece, but below Denmark - who failed to get out of their Euro group last month. This is the first time Brazil have been outside the top ten since the ranking system began. Under the complex system used to calculate the rankings, the 2014 World Cup hosts have also suffered by having not played any competitive internationals since

last year’s Copa America when they went out in the quarter-finals. Uruguay remained the highest-ranked South American side at third. Africa’s highest team are Ivory Coast in 16th. Hollands’ woeful Euro campaign sees them drop down four places while Argentina’s recent 4-3 friendly win over Brazil has ensured they remain in seventh place. Further down the list, the Republic of Ireland drop eight places to 26, Wales are 38th, Scotland are 49th and Northern Ireland a lowly 102nd. Cyprus are up three places to 122.

No easing off, says Fabregas Spain will take some beating at 2014 World Cup in Brazil By Simon Stone

IN BRIEF

CESC Fabregas insists there is no chance of Spain easing off now they are record breakers. The former Arsenal star was most pointed in the rejection of Spain being a boring side immediately after their four-goal Euro 2012 hammering of Italy in Kiev on Sunday night. It certainly seems harsh to pick holes in a team that has just become the first to win three major international tournaments on the trot, including the World Cup. And the manner of their performance in the Olympic Stadium, and the players responsible for it, does not offer much hope of any change. Midfielder Xavi is the elder statesman of the outfield contingent. And, at 32, he still has plenty of miles in the tank. Skipper Iker Casillas is 31 but in an era when goalkeepers often play at the highest level until they are approaching 40, that is hardly a problem either. So, if a weakness is to be exploited by the teams eager to nick the World Cup from Spain’s grasp at Brazil 2014, it may be mental, as players who have won eve-

rything try to keep themselves motivated. But Fabregas has got some bad news for Spain’s rivals. La Roja are not finished yet. “Everyone thought we would be finished after we won the Euros and the World Cup,” said Fabregas. “They thought we might ease off a bit but here we are again. “No-one has done the triple before and we are very proud of it. “We are lucky to have had a lot of good experiences at a young age. “Hopefully that and the success we are having now mean we will be stronger for those experiences when we’re older.” Fabregas made a significant contribution to Spain’s success, just not in the way he would have imagined. An orthodox midfield player at Arsenal, in Poland and Ukraine coach Vicente Del Bosque discovered a new role for the 25-year-old. In a team without a striker, Fabregas was the one asked to become a ‘false nine’. “It’s the first tournament in my life that I have played as a striker,” the Barcelona man said. “It was difficult at the beginning but I got used to it very well and I am really proud of this.”

Season kicks off after 48 hour break By Brian Homewood

Bring it on: Cesc Fabregas has warned Spain’s rivals that the record-breaking European and world champions have targetted even more glory

THE new European season kicked off with three embarrassingly one-sided matches and two goalless draws on Tuesday night, less than 48 hours after Spain won Euro 2012. Malta captain Michael Mifsud produced the outstanding performance of the evening with four goals as Valletta crushed hapless Lusitans of Andorra 8-0 in one of three Champions League first qualifying round first-leg ties. Luxemburg’s FC Dudelange, who got the 2012-13 season rolling as their game kicked off first, thumped San Marino’s Tre Penne 7-0 while Northern Ireland’s Linfield were held to a goalless draw by B36 Torshavn from the Faroe Islands. Dudelange’s match kicked off only two days after Spain lifted the Euro 2012 trophy in Kiev to bring the curtain down on the previous season. Sofian Benzouien and Aurelien Joachim both scored twice for the Luxemburg side who have been domestic champions 10 times in the last 13 seasons. The Champions League will take nearly 10 months to complete, with four qualifying rounds, a group stage and three more rounds of of knockout games, before ending on May 25 with the final at Wembley.

Anzhi say banned from playing at home in Europe

Sammer vows to bring quick success to Bayern Munich

Conte summoned over match-fixing allegation

RUSSIAN club Anzhi Makhachkala, who have splurged millions on the likes of Cameroon striker Samuel Eto’o and Dutch coach Guus Hiddink, said they have been banned from playing at home in Europe this season. The club has written an open letter to UEFA president Michel Platini saying it was “deeply sorry and surprised” to hear that it would not be able to stage Europa League matches at its base in the violence-plagued Dagestan region. UEFA, which according to Anzhi’s letter made the decision for security reasons, were not immediately available for comment.

NEW Bayern Munich director of sport Matthias Sammer has vowed to bring immediate success to the Alliance Arena. After a season of close misses the former European Footballer of the Year was this brought in to replace the sacked Christian Nerlinger. Bayern finished second behind Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal last term, before their heartbreaking Champions League final defeat to Chelsea on penalties. Sammer said he will not accept second-best. “We want to be, must be and will be successful straight away.”

JUVENTUS coach Antonio Conte has been summoned to appear before the Italian football federation’s prosecutor on July 13 over allegations of match-fixing from his time as Siena coach, the federation said. Police said in May that Conte was being investigated on suspicion of sporting fraud concerning a match between Siena and Novara in April 2011 before the former won promotion to Serie A. Conte has denied wrongdoing and Juventus, who won the Serie A title last term without losing a game in his first season in charge, have fully backed their former midfielder.

Sturridge keeps Olympic dream alive despite meningitis scare

Pogba showed us no respect, says Ferguson

Chelsea closely monitoring striker’s health

By Rory Dollard

By Jim van Wijk DANIEL Sturridge remains hopeful he will be able to play for Team GB at the London Olympics after undergoing hospital tests for suspected viral meningitis. The 22-year-old forward fell ill over the weekend with what is typically considered a mild strain of the disease. Sturridge feels confident he can recover in time to take some part in the Games. In a statement, the England international said: “The Chelsea medical team have been closely monitoring everything and they and the doctors and nurses at St Mary’s Hospital have been outstanding throughout. “Thankfully, I am starting to feel a lot better and I am optimistic about being able to make the Olympics. “I am fortunate to have received many wishes of support and I want to thank everybody who has sent messages, it is much appreciated.” Stuart Pearce’s 18-man GB squad is set to meet in Loughborough next weekend and the manager has until July 25 to select a replacement should Sturridge be forced to withdraw.

Get well soon: Daniel Sturridge remains hopeful he will be able to play for Team GB despite his health problems Scotland and Huddersfield striker Jordan Rhodes is understood to be among the names on the standby list. Blues boss Roberto di Matteo also preferred to be positive about the striker’s recovery. Speaking at his club’s Cobham training complex, the newly appointed Chelsea

manager said: “Daniel has viral meningitis, but I spoke to him and he feels better now. “We are going to follow his situation and hopefully he will get well as soon as possible and be able to join Olympics squad. “He is currently still in hospital but I am optimistic

he will recover (in time to play). “I think it’s a question of daily monitoring his health, that’s what matters most to him, his family and ourselves. “We have had a doctor with him since day one and we are being updated on hourly basis.

“We will see and make a decision with the doctors and if he can join.” Di Matteo added: “It is difficult to give a time limit today and we will have to monitor it on a daily basis. “But the fact that he is feeling better is very positive and I am optimistic he will recover.”

Spurs swoop for Sigurdsson By Simon Peach

Andre Villas-Boas has made Hoffenheim midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson his first signing as Tottenham manager

ANDRE Villas-Boas yesterday made Gylfi Sigurdsson his first signing as Tottenham head coach. The former Chelsea boss was only appointed as Harry Redknapp’s successor on Tuesday, but has moved quickly to bring the Hoffenheim midfielder to White Hart Lane. The move secures Sigurdsson’s return to the Barclays Premier League, where he impressed so much during the second half of last season on loan at Swansea. The 22-year-old netted seven times in 19 appearances for the Welsh side and picked up March’s Player of the Month award. Sigurdsson had looked to turn his successful loan spell into a permanent move after Swansea settled on a record-breaking £6.8million fee with Hoffenheim.

The Swans also announced that personal terms had been agreed, but manager Brendan Rodgers’ move to Liverpool saw the move falter. Sigurdsson had been linked with a move to the Reds to rejoin his former manager, but Spurs swooped to compete the signing of the in-demand midfielder.

ORIGINALLY MOVED The Iceland international originally moved to England in October 2005 when he joined Reading’s academy. Sigurdsson spent loan spells at Shrewsbury and Crewe as he looked to establish himself in the Royals’ first-team, where he became a key player in the 2009/10 season. The midfielder won the club’s Player of the Year award in what was his only

full season for the Berkshire outfit, who sold him to Hoffenheim for a reported £6.5million fee at the start of the following campaign. The midfielder enjoyed a good start to life at the Rhein-Neckar Arena, but fell down the pecking order and was farmed out on loan to Swansea in January. That move seems to have been the making of a player that many now believe has the ability to replace Luka Modric in the heart of Spurs’ midfield. The Croatia international has long been linked with a move away from the club and made his frustrations clear last summer when he was denied a move to Chelsea. Manchester United and Real Madrid have both been linked with a move for Modric this summer and could yet tempt Tottenham’s resolve with bigmoney offers.

MANCHESTER United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has accused Paul Pogba of a lack of respect after revealing the midfielder was joining Juventus. Pogba, 19, made just seven senior appearances for the Red Devils but was viewed as a rising star and a likely first-team regular. The Frenchman’s contract expired this summer but, despite persistent speculation over his future last season, United were keen to extend his stay and offered him fresh terms as well as the chance for great first-team opportunities next season. But a long-mooted move to Turin now appears to be on the cards, although the deal has not yet been confirmed by the Italian champions. Ferguson made little attempt to hide his displeasure at Pogba’s decision. The Scot told MUTV: “Pogba signed for Juventus a long time ago as far as we’re aware. “It is disappointing. I don’t think he showed us any respect at all, to be honest,” he said. “I’m quite happy that if they carry on that way, they’re probably better doing it away from us.” Pogba arrived at United from Le Havre in 2009 - a move that infuriated the French side at the time. His seven United appearances all came last season and all from the bench. Three of those were in the Barclays Premier League and three in the Carling Cup, with a solitary Europa League match in a 2-1 defeat to Athletic Bilbao. Pogba is the second highlyrated young player to leave the club this year after the prodigiously talented but controversial Ravel Morrison was allowed to join West Ham in January. The future of a third, Ezekiel Fryers, is unclear. He has also been offered a new contract but has yet to inform United of his decision. “We haven’t heard anything from Zeki Fryers,” Ferguson added. “I don’t know what’s happening there but he’s not been in touch with the club. His agent hasn’t been in touch with the club and I can only assume he’ll be back for training.” On a positive note for United fans, Ferguson hinted there could be further additions before the start of the 2012/13 campaign. Shinji Kagawa and Nick Powell have arrived from Borussia Dortmund and Crewe respectively, but Ferguson remains on the lookout. Asked if he there would be more new blood, he added: “Yes, there’s a possibility. We’re working on one or two things but there’s nothing really to tell you to be honest.”

Sturridge keeps Olympic dream alive despite meningitis scare 31

Murray marches into semis after wearing down Ferrer Scot on course to become the first British man to reach the final since 1938

By Rex Gowar

NDY Murray reached a fourth consecutive Wimbledon semifinal with a dramatic 6-7 7-6 6-4 7-6 victory over Spain’s David Ferrer in a rain-disrupted quarter-final last night. The British fourth seed thrilled the Centre Court crowd by fighting back from a set and a break down to book a last-four meeting with Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Murray gradually wore down tenacious seventh seed Ferrer after a nail-biting second-set tiebreak in which he fell 5-2 behind and saved a set point at 6-5 down before taking it 8-6. He clinched the third set with an ace before a short rain interruption with the score 5-5 in the fourth and he won the decisive tiebreak

Moment of glory: Andy Murray looks to the skies after seeing off David Ferrer in four tough sets 7-4, sealing victory in three hours 52 minutes with another ace. The Scot, who sent down 18 aces altogether, said it was tense in the dressingrooms during the rain inter-

ruption. “At the break I went for a shower and threw some cold water on my face. It was a very intense atmosphere,” he said. “It was a huge match for

both of us. Coming off at a critical stage, if I lost that fourth set it was going to be a very tough match.” In a clash packed with intriguing long rallies, Murray fought back from 5-2 down

in the first set after a dominant start by Ferrer, a tenacious performer with four titles to his name this year. Ferrer, who had previously dropped just one set in the tournament, had a first set

point in the opening set at 5-4 but the Scot fended it off before the Spaniard came through to win the tiebreak 7-5 in a little over an hour. Each player had a break in the second set with Ferrer setting himself up to serve for a 2-0 lead after Murray chipped wide, one of his few errors at the net. However, Murray broke straight back as Ferrer uncharacteristically put two successive balls wide playing to his opponent’s backhand. Murray, seeking to become the first British man to reach the Wimbledon final since 1938, was full of praise for his opponent. “He’s a great player, he’s number five and doesn’t always get the respect.... he’s an unbelievably hard worker,” Murray said. It will not bother Murray in the slightest that the two men still ahead of him in the push for the title, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, won their last-eight matches in less time than it took Murray and Ferrer to complete two sets. Murray always knew he would have to beat the best to achieve his dream. And if he is walking out on Centre Court on Sunday, whoever he plays, it will be true to say he may never be in better shape to banish those ghosts for good.

Majestic Federer demolishes Youzhny By Ed Osmond

The six-time champion was at his imperious best as he set up a mouth-watering showdown with Novak Djokovic

ROGER Federer was at his imperious best in a graceful 6-1 6-2 6-2 destruction of Mikhail Youzhny to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals yesterday. The third seed and six-time champion outclassed the 26th-seeded Russian on Centre Court, picking him off at will to set up a last-four showdown with defending champion Novak Djokovic. “I have a good matchup with Youzhny for some reason because he is a good player and makes it hard normally for players. I had a tough one with him here last year,” Federer told a news conference. “I’m obviously excited about this result here today,” Federer added after a 14th successive win over the hap-

less Youzhny. The match was watched from the Royal Box by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and former Wimbledon champions Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf. “I think it’s inspiring when royalty and other legends of the game come to watch,” Federer said. “It’s great for tennis.” Federer, knocked out in the quarter-finals at the All England Club the last two years, roared into a 4-1 lead and after a short rain delay wrapped up the first set in 28 minutes. The Swiss maestro broke in the first game of the second set with the aid of a lucky net-cord and, showing no sign of the back injury which hampered him in his fourthround win over Xavier Malisse, he sauntered into a 2-0 lead.

“I’m happy that things were fine out there today,” Federer said. Today I didn’t have to call the trainer. It was straightforward. I could focus on tennis again, on tactics I wanted to play, instead of focusing on how to manage little issues or big issues. “I’m happy where I am right now. My back is holding up.” With the sun making a rare appearance at the tournament, Federer broke Youzhny again at the start of the third set. The Russian let out a huge roar of frustration when he failed to take advantage of a break-point but he made far too many unforced errors to get back into the match. Federer wasted three match points on Youzhny’s serve but he quickly earned himself two more and took the first with a deft angled

volley to wrap up victory in an one hour 30 minutes. “Obviously it’s a big deal. No denying,” said the 16-time grand slam champion. “It feels great being back in the semis. Haven’t been here in the last couple years. So this is nice to be back to a place where I’ve been so many times before. “Usually once I get to the semis, I’m playing some of my best tennis.” Federer has now reached the semi-finals of a grand slam tournament a record 32 times, one more than American Jimmy Connors.
