Margaret Szafron When it comes to memories, Marg Szafron knows how to make them…and to preserve them. After retiring in 2010 from a successful career as a property appraiser, Marg intended to spend more time “making memories” with her grandchildren and children, and working more closely with her hubby, Larrie, in Prestige Video Transfer. Old VHS, films, photos are deteriorating and this company will preserve your memories or important business media in digital form (DVD). They also provide documentary style videography including documentation for insurance. An active member of the CVWBN since 2007, Marg has been on the Board of Directors of the past two years, on the Board of the CVHBBA for one year, and is currently a Director of the Chamber of Commerce. “Preserve your cherished lifetime memories.” “

Lara Austin Investment Advisor WBN Member since 2002 Working with successful professionals and retirees as an investment advisor for 10 years, Lara believes it’s important to take the time to clearly understand a client’s financial picture – risk tolerance, tax situation, objectives, anticipated “life events,” and retirement/estate plans. Following this initial “Discovery Meeting”, Lara’s next step is to custom-design an investment portfolio designed to achieve a client’s goals for capital preservation, retirement income and long-term growth. She guides clients through decisions, as she keeps a pulse on the market, trends, and tax changes that may impact them. In addition to educating clients on changes that may affect them, Lara believe it’s important to help educate members of the community to help them more effectively manage their financial lives. Lara hosts and presents various workshops in the Comox Valley throughout the year, including upcoming business owner presentations in March. (See www.LaraAustin.com for details.) Lara is particularly concerned by statistics that reveal how many women remain uninvolved in their family’s financial management. Much of her volunteer time, therefore, is with women’s groups, such as WBN (past-president and recipient of Minerva award). In these groups, she hopes to educate, serve as a role model, and advocate for women to understand and become proactive in their family finances.

Want to see if your financial plan is on course? Call Lara for a complimentary, no-obligation Discovery Meeting.

BOOST Building Opportunities for Organizations using our Strengths and Talents.

Since the beginning, the Comox Valley Women’s Business Network has supported the Comox Valley Women’s Centre and the Comox Valley Transition Society through donating proceeds from raffles and 50/50 draws and gathering gently used clothing and donated toiletry items for the society. Last year they developed the program, “ BOOST”. This is an opportunity for members to support one organization for a year and help it to increase it’s profile and internal capacity. The WBN membership has a wealth of diverse talent and skill that they can outreach to a deserving organization! The WBN board will continue to support the Comox Valley Transition Society as a BOOST recipient in 2012.

Carla Arnold I grew up in northern B.C., moving to the island during high school. After marrying my husband Christopher, we moved to his hometown of Kingston, Ontario. I started my career as a realtor there in 1987. After 5 successful years our family was growing again, and we decided to move back to Vancouver Island. We spent one year in Victoria during which we took trips all over British Columbia searching for the perfect community to settle, raise a family, and eventually retire. We easily chose the Comox Valley for its affordability, clean air, friendliness, great recreation and good employment opportunities. After taking some time off to devote to my growing family, I became licensed again. Being a realtor in the 21st century is very different from being a realtor in the 1980’s! Technological advances make some parts of my job much easier now, but many parts are much more complicated. The legal responsibility and accountability of a realtor is much greater now, which is why we are required to constantly upgrade our education. I love to help people find their dream property, whether it be young people buying their first home, growing families moving up,elderly people downsizing after retirement, or a disciplined saver who invests in an income producing property. I am the mother of three, grandmother of three, and proud ud d tto o be working worki king in in the th career I love. But I was so ready to come home to Canada. It didn’t matter to me where, but I’ll tell you, the Comox Valley has been one of the best things that ever happened! Past Presidents

My advice... to new professionals and business owners is to get involved. Your actions speak louder than anything you can say about yourself. Volunteer for a committee; be a Director on a board; ask the board if they need assistance on a project. Even if you are new at the role, your values and skills will shine and translate into how people think of you as a business owner. There is nothing like working on a common goal to help you forge stronger connections.

Lara Austin 2008 - 2009

Inspiring memory. I have often referred to the WBN as the ‘gift that keeps on giving’. Both personally and professionally the relationships that were forged through the WBN have enhanced and been beneficial these past 15 years. Like minded women are a powerful group!

Deb Dewar 2003 - 2004

Being involved...

As a founding member of the WBN, I grew professionally from the associations, speakers and friendships I made. I am particularly proud of being the chair of the committee that established the Minerva Award and the calibre of women chosen over the years to receive this award. We are Snowbirds now - we go south. Life is Good.

in the WBN brought me many friendships that have lasted through my 16 years in the Valley. With those friendships came a sense of belonging, and support for growing my business as well as meeting challenges in that growth. The WBN provided me a network that has been invaluable to this day. I received more, in countless and unexpected ways as a WBN member; things and relationships that will benefit me for the rest of my life.
