HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT DISHWASHER Dishwashers today offer an endless array of features and options. Which ones make the most sense for you? Here's what you need to know before you buy. If you're shopping for a dishwasher for the first time in a few years, you're in for a treat. "You won't be buying a white box like our parents did; there are just so many more options out there today that it's really fun to shop for dishwashers," says Diane Ritchey, editor of Home Appliance magazine. The models available today can do just about everything but decide whose turn it is to do the dishes. A few of the most publicized wonder washers include Asko, which "hand washes" the finest crystal; the double Dishdrawer by Fisher & Paykel that lets you mix delicate crystal and heavily soiled baking dishes. Other new features are that most models now include taller tubs. The dimensions outside the dishwasher are the same, but the tub inside has gotten taller and you can put taller pots, pans and platters in a load. Ritchey says noise level is coming to mean more and more to dishwasher consumers, in part because of the trend towards entertaining right in the kitchen or making it part of a "great room" where the family
congregates. "When the kitchen's the hub room, you don't want to hear the dishwasher grinding away," she says. "And it's great if you can run the dishwasher in the middle of the main course with people right in the other half of the great room." Ritchey recommends several Bosch Appliance models for their quietness. "Other super-quiet models come from KitchenAid and Fisher & Paykel," she says, "and almost all models now have more insulation so they make less noise during operation than in days of old." Other trends include people buying 18-inch and countertop dishwashers if they live in small spaces or want a second dishwasher for the times they don't have a full load. People are also matching the dishwasher's exterior to their cabinetry with wooden panels. "The seamless look is popular, but some people like to see their appliances," she says. "In Europe right now the dishwashers in light, bright colors and patterns are popular because they're eye-catching."

Spring CleaningTips for a FRESH BATHROOM Spring is a warmer, brighter season which encourages a desire to rejuvenate the home. It is time to turn our thoughts to spring cleaning now that the spring season is upon us. It still remains a mystery why the seasonal patterns encourage us to clean, but it is an important matter. Just like other parts of the home, the bathroom requires spring cleaning too. It gets rid of all the grime, dust and clutter so the room gets freshened up and simplifies the daily cleaning tasks. Take a look around the sink, bathtub and in the cupboards for any half used products. A lot of these may be winter products such as winter lotions, creamy soaps, heavy creams, moisturizers, etc. which won’t be needed for springtime. Check the expiry dates and if they can be used for another year, sore them elsewhere and replace the empty space with suntan lotions and lightweight creams. Dust down the walls…or better yet, repaint to give them a fresh look. Don’t hesitate to play with bold colors along with pastel colors. A wide range of forecasted colors can be used including the 2012 color of the year, variations of orange, radiant gold, fuchsia, and green based yellows.
Take down the shower curtain and wash and dry it. For a new fresh look you can replace it with something in a bright, spring like pattern. Spring patterns normally include birds that represents birth, lots of leaves and flowers representing beauty and freshness, swirls and wavy patterns that represents the fresh breeze that flows in spring. Keep these things in mind while purchasing stuff for spring. Shower curtains start at 14.95 at your local downtown Courtenay retailer. Inspect the towels. Any thread born or faded towels should be recycled into to cleaning cloths. Replace them with some beautiful 100% Turkish Cotton towels that are available in a variety of beautiful, bold or pastel spring colors. Lastly, clean out the exhaust fan as well as all the nooks and crannies. Scrub the tub, shower, toilet and floors. Then the fun part can begin…. add a few colorful accessories and some beautiful flowers, to add a fresh aroma, and the look is complete.

And still - each one of them have a different prediction for when Spring will arrive. Whether early or late, the Interior Design Show in Toronto was definitely on the side of an early Spring. The displays were fresh and inviting - and Jan (Cody & Co.) last month gave everyone a headâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s up into the colour Tangerine Tango, which was in many exhibitors accessories, giving a lovely punch of colour to the displays.

The appearance of wicker or bamboo all replicated in resins, looked delicious - especially since his accessories featured Tangerine Tango pillows and frosty Orange Crush bottles. To further entice us into thinking that Spring wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t very far away there were many refrigerators at the show - all showing those necessary ice-makers which we â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;needâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; for our summer iced teaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and margaritaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. The one refrigerator that stood out for me was a LIEBHERR 24â&#x20AC;? in stainless (it is also available in white) that had full-extension
drawers for the refrigerator and freezer. The display showed two 24â&#x20AC;? - side by side. Absolutely brilliant -rather than opening up the door to a larger expanse - you just open up one units door - thus keeping everything at optimum temperature on the other side. These units were perfect for condominium living.
Ohh - and the â&#x20AC;&#x153;why didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t I think of itâ&#x20AC;? chair ! ! - The Interior Design Show has numerous Guest Speakers, which, of course, requires adequate seating for everyone. What a surprise the exhibitors had when four enormous flat boxes arrived that were clearly marked â&#x20AC;&#x153;Chairsâ&#x20AC;?. Inside were 300 large envelopes that unfolded

beautiful but gave a sense of welcome. Trends? As Toronto is the condominium capital of North America the furniture, lighting, appliances and accessories were all designed for a downsized lifestyle. Many exhibitors featured rooms that were multi-use - guest rooms/libraries libraries/dining - dining/ kitchens - kitchens/media - all of which reflect the lifestyles of today.

SOMETHING FIERCE, Memoirs of a Revolutionary Daughter by Carmen Aguirre The CBC Canada Reads contest is at its height as I write this piece – a very different game this year in that CBC invited Canadians to submit their favourite non fiction books for discussion. I was fortunate to receive a copy of Carmen Aguirre's memoir (one of the finalists) for Christmas and have just finished reading it. I remember the 1970's in Vancouver when Chilean refugees from Pinochet's coup were arriving, telling their harrowing stories. I supported church

and community groups that hosted and raised funds for them. Perhaps I even met Carmen Aguirre and her family. But I could not have known the terror that was their constant companion without this book. I could not have known something of the complexities of organizing and protecting the resistance movement without this book. And I could never have imagined the life of a young girl come teenager – with all the accompanying anxieties and dreams – burdened with keeping

Q: Who can have photo rejuventation? A: Both males and females with sun damage, broken capillaries, a flushed appearance, brown spots, enlarged pores, fine lines, rosacea, freckles and hyper pigmentation.
Q: How does it work? A: The Intense Pulse Light Technology directs 560 nm to 1200nm light in the form of pulses into the skin. The colours in the light are attracted to the browns, reds and deeper collagen tissue. The heat generated from the light targets and vaporizes the browns, coagulates the reds and heats the collagen. The body's healing mechanisms take over and slough the browns, absorb the reds and thicken the collagen.
Q: How many treatments do I need? A: The average is five, usually one treatment every three weeks. Clients with brown or pigmented skin will notice a significant change after two treatments. Clients with reds or flushing will notice a significant change after three treatments. The final 2-3 treatments will continue to improve the colour, texture and pore size.
Q: Does it hurt? A: There is a mild stinging sensation but it is very tolerable. Your face with be covered with cold gel and it reduces the sensation.
Q: What can I expect after? A: These sessions are designed to provide no down time. Your face may appear flushed it usually fades within a few hours. Clients with pigment may notice their browns appear darker after the treatment. This darkness takes on a "dirty look" until it flakes off in 7-10 days. Makeup can be used right after so you can return to work immediately. Sometimes a client can develop "purpura" or a bruise on the face. It does not hurt and will fade in about ten days. This bruising can be covered with makeup. If you have a lot of colour, browns or reds on cheeks and around eyes you may develop some slight swelling for a few days while the skin is healing.
Q: Who can not have these sessions? A: Some medications and medical conditions can interfere with treatments, so it is important to review your history to assess your suitability. It is not recommended during pregnancy or if you have unrealistic expectations. These sessions can not be done on anyone with a tan.
