nasad The College of Visual Arts’ application for accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design has been approved! This is a significant milestone in cva’s development as a college of art and design. Faculty and staff engaged in an extensive selfstudy process during the 2010–2011 academic year, including review of all of cva’s academic programs, administrative policies, practices, and procedures, gallery and community programming, and student support services. A selfstudy report was written and the formal process culminated in a visit by two nasad evaluators in April of 2011. The visitors toured our facilities and met with every constituency at cva, including members of the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and students. Our interaction with the visitors was truly a pleasure; they were very well prepared for the visit and knowledgeable about art and design education.

one of cva’s goals for many years. cva has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the National Association of College and Schools (hlc) for more than fifteen years. hlc is the general accrediting agency for postsecondary institutions and cva will continue to maintain this accreditation. nasad is the specialized accrediting agency for art and design; meeting their standards is a stamp of approval for cva’s academic programs and thus this is a very special moment in cva’s history. As a nasad member, cva will now be eligible to participate in special events for admissions recruiting and will also be eligible to apply for membership in several other college associations that will be beneficial for cva. cva library yarn art v. 2.0 Building on the success of the library’s Yarn Art exhibition in the

spring of 2010, students, staff, and alumni of the College of Visual Arts present their individual fiber interpretations of the yarn graffiti phenomenon in this new exhibition. Participants are invited to install their work around the library garden railings anytime between October 2011 and April 2012. The exhibition is organized by Jean Curtis-Neitz, cva librarian. the great print exchange Great prints and great food were the order of the day at the print exchange and cook off contest. Categories for the latter this year were “What is a Salad” and “Coffee and ...”. Contestants in the cook off vied for wonderful prizes and gift certificates. Attendees enjoyed a delicious lunch. This biannual event is a labor of love that is organized by Maria Santiago, Professor and Coordinator of Printmaking.

once again it has been a busy summer and fall for cva students. It all started in July with a Summit Avenue Cass Gilbert House fire where eight cva students lived! The college rallied and met the students’ immediate needs, even housing some students in a hotel downtown until things could be worked out. All house members were safe including the four cats. The house has been repaired and most students were back in their apartments when school began. All in all the incident was a great representation of how the cva community works – from one of our security guards alerting us to the blaze to fellow students offering their showers and their sofas. new student orientation was a great success as was the fall Welcome Back Picnic. In October fifty-five students went to the Corn Maze in Afton. It was a strangely warm and windy October evening and the corn

was plenty scary. What a great turn out and what great fun. ann ledy is continuing her Presidential Teas and Lunch with the President series. This fall’s Tea for Honors students was held in what was once the Summit dining room. The setting was perfect and the students shared their honors projects. Our students are doing some inspiring work. President Ledy also had lunch with each of the four foundation sections. There were some very interesting conversations and our new students are excited and eager to learn all we can offer. They also seem to enjoy pizza. this year’s student council is being led by President Emma Kullberg and Vice President Shark E. Meyers. CVA Student Council has approved Illustration Club, Photo Club, and Anime Club for this fall and, of course, bowling continues to be an option! The Council’s Halloween decorations and party were a lot of fun as were the trick-otreaters on Halloween night. in october nationally recognized artist Sharon Louden presented a talk to cva students. Her visit to the Twin Cities coincided with the opening of her

site-specific installation Merge that was created for the grand re-opening of the Weisman Art Museum. Louden discussed the evolution of her artistic practice and professional life that includes multi-media work based in painting, installation, sculpture, drawings, prints, and animation.
