Fieldhouse to open in spring 2019

FIELDHOUSE IS NEW CROWN JEWEL FOR CU ATHLETICS Construction on the Campbellsville University Tiger Fieldhouse has begun and is expected to take 18-20 months, meaning the facility will open in summer 2019. The new two-story 24,000 square-foot fieldhouse will be located on the corner of Tiger Way and Chandler Street – across from the Hawkins Athletic Center. The fieldhouse will be the new home for men’s and women’s soccer and Fighting Tiger football. It will feature locker rooms for all three teams, coaches’ offices, administration offices, the Big Maroon Club, conference rooms and a new spirit shop with official Adidas apparel. The cost of the fieldhouse, which is the first addition since the wrestling facility was opened in Fall 2016, is estimated around #3 million. The new facility – which is yet to be named – is being costructed by Blevins Construction in Campbellsville.

Brooks & Bloemer Athletic Training Room

The Brooks and Bloemer Athletic Training Facility is located behind Powell Athletic Center. The facility was made possible with contributions from former Campbellsville University Team Physicians, Dr. Bobby Brooks of Campbellsville, and Dr. Gary Bloemer of Louisville. The facility holds a treatment area, a rehabilitation area, wet room for aquatic modalities, a Physicians Office, and a taping area. In spring 2017, the athletic training staff secured the old Wellness Center and has turned that portion of the athletic training room into a rehab facility (below).

PERRY THOMAS After a 4-6 record in 2013, Perry Thomas has turned the football program around and has recorded the most successful four-year stint in CU history. Campbellsville broke 23 program records in 2015 en route to winning its second-straight Mid-South Conference West Division title and earning two-straight NAIA Football Championship Series playoff berths. Thomas also picked up MSC Coach of the Year honors. The MSC title in 2014 was the first since 1997 and the playoff berth was the first since 2001.

The Tigers took a step back in 2016 by going 2-8 overall. CU battled season-ending injuries and only starting one upperclassmen on the defensive side of the ball. But in 2017, Campbellsville was one win away from another NAIA Playoff berth. The NCCAA selected the Fighiting Tigers to participate in the Victory Bowl and Campbellsville won its second championship with a 41-28 win over Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU).

Thomas inherited the Campbellsville University football program in December 2007, coming off an 0-10 season. After posting a 3-8 record his first season in 2008, and finishing runner-up in the Mid-South Conference East Division in 2009 at 7-4, Thomas’ program was named the No. 20 most improved program in all levels of college football and the No. 6 most improved in the NAIA. In 2010, he posted a 7-5 record, giving the Tigers their first back-to-back winning seasons in nearly a decade and took CU to the postseason for the first time since 2001 with a trip to the NCCAA Victory Bowl. The Tigers returned to the Victory Bowl in 2011, winning their first title. 18

Head Coach • Perry Thomas During the 2009 season, Thomas put Campbellsville’s defense among the nation’s best in third down situations and inside the Red Zone, as the Tigers posted their first winning season since 2004 and best finish since 2003, at 7-4. He led the Tigers to their first win over rival Georgetown College since 1997, with a 28-21 victory at home and also knocked off a Top 10 team in Shorter College, 42-28, in the CollegeFanz/NAIA National Game of the Week. Over the past 11 seasons under Thomas, CU has had five NAIA All-Americans, 85 Mid-South Conference All-Conference selections and 90 Academic All-Conference selections. Thomas’ team also had the 2009 Mid-South Conference Champion of Character Award given to one of his players, Calvin Bini. In 2010, the program was awarded the NAIA Champion of Character Team Award. Before coming to Campbellsville, Thomas posted a successful, 16-year career as a high school coach in Kentucky, leading his team to the Kentucky State High School Football Playoffs each year he was a head coach. His 16-year record as a high school head coach is 133-64. His coaching career began in 1986 as a volunteer assistant at Allen County-Scottsville High School and he was an assistant coach for the Patriots in 1987. Offensive Coordinator • Rick Gehres

RICK GEHRES

Offensive Coordinator • 12th season Ricky Gehres was promoted to the program’s offensive coordinator in May 2012. The 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 seasons saw the most success compared to previous years in the Tigers’ offense. During the 2017 season, Gehres orchestrated the best passing attack in the NAIA that averaged 382.9 yards per game, while coaching the top passer in the nation in Hunter Brown who led the NAIA with 370.5 passing yards per game -- en route to being named the NCCAA Player of the Year. Brown concluded his career leading numerous passing yards in his two seasons as the starting quarterback for the Tigers, where both seasons came under Gehres guiding the offense. In 2016, quarterback Brown and wide receiver Tyus Alcorn led the Tigers. Brown had a remarkable season for the Tigers breaking or tying eight program records – passing yards in a game (617 vs. Faulkner), passing yards in a season (3,734), touchdown passes (7 vs. Bethel), passing yards per game in a season (377.6), most completions in a game (38 vs. Lindsey Wilson), most completions in a season (292), most attempts in a game (67 vs. Bethel) and most attempts in a season (489). Brown was also one touchdown pass short of tying Jacob Russell’s record of 42 career touchdowns. Brown ranked No. 1 in the NAIA in passing yards per game (377.6) and No. 3 in total passing yards (3,776). In addition, Brown was one of two Tigers to earn First-Team All-NCCAA honors. Senior receiver Tyus Alcorn also had a phenomenal season by leading the Tigers for the secondstraight year. Alcorn, a senior from Lexington, Ky., finished the season with 1,095 receiving yards and 109.5 receiving yards per game, which led the Mid-South Conference in both categories. He now joins Shane Riley, Trevon Chatman and Jarrod Harrington as the only 1,000-yard receivers in program history. Alcorn also led the Mid-South with 6.6 receptions per game this season. At the NAIA level, Alcorn ranked fifth in receiving yards, sixth in receiving yards per game and receptions per game. Highlighting his senior season, Alcorn hauled in 235 yards vs. Union College to break the single-game record, which was previously set by Shane Riley with 172 (2002). Over the previous three seasons, Alcorn totaled 36 receiving touchdowns – breaking the career record which was previously set by Demytreus Gipson (2011-2014) with 29. He also holds the single-season mark of 19 touchdowns set in 2015. Alcorn was also named the MSC West Division Co-Offensive Player of the Year earlier in November. 20

Offensive Coordinator • Rick Gehres In 2015, CU finished in the Top 30 in 16 different statistical categories. Led by NAIA All-American, MSC West Offensive Player of the Year and NCCAA Player of the Year Jacob Russell, the Tigers averaged 27.3 first downs per game (#2), 350 passing yards per game (#3) and 509 total yards per game (#3). Russell is the first Fighting Tiger to be named MSC Offensive Player of the Year and second overall, as former linebackers coach Dwight Houston picked up Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2011. Russell was the first NAIA All-American for Campbellsville since 2010, when Calvin Bini was named a First Team defensive back. Overall, he is the eighth NAIA All-American in program history. In 2014, Campbellsville finished in the Top 25 in several NAIA offensive categories - third in passing yards per game (315 yards), sixth in total pass offense (3475 yards), eighth in pass efficiency (144.7), 18th in total offensive yards per game (418 yards), 20th in average first downs per game (22), 25th in total scoring (340). While starting his collegiate career at Western Kentucky University as a quarterback, Gehres transferred to Campbellsville as a wide receiver in the fall of 2001. A 2004 graduate, Gehres is among the leaders in several receiving categories. The Hopkinsville, Ky. native was a two-time First Team All-MSC selection and was named an Honorable Mention NAIA All-American in 2002. He was a pre-season NAIA All-American in 2003. During his time at Campbellsville, the Tigers went 31-14 overall including a season at 10-3 with the first NAIA Playoff victory in school history advancing them to the second round of the NAIA Playoffs. In 2003, he helped lead the Tigers to a 9-2 finish which ties for the best regular season record at CU. He finished his career at 153 Receptions for 2,202 Yards and 15 Touchdowns. Before returning to Campbellsville as a position coach in 2006, Gehres coached wide receivers at Hopkinsville High School where they finished 10-3 in 2005. After graduating from CU, Gehres played overseas in the German Football League (GFL) the spring of 2005, where they finished 12-2 on the year, amassing 73 receptions for 1,246 yards and 15 touchdowns. In 2006, Gehres spent time in Arena Football playing both sides of the ball while starting on defense for the Odessa (TX) Roughnecks (IFL).

Defensive Backs • 1st season Bobby Burns was hired on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2018 as he will take over as the defensive backs coach for the Tigers. Burns takes over a defensive back core that racked up 13 interceptions last season. BJ Pelt led the way with seven interceptions to lead the NAIA, while he also ranked ninth with 1.6 passes defended per game. Garland Webb was the leading tackler in the secondary last season with 67 total tackles in nine games. Burns is familiar to Kentucky as he played cornerback at University of Louisville for two seasons. During his time at Louisville, he earned Big East Athletic Academic Honors in both 2009 and 2010. Prior to coming to Campbellsville, Burns coached for one season at Langston University. In the spring season, he coached the wide receiving core for the Lions and transitioned to coaching the defensive backs in the fall. During his time at Langston, Burns helped the Lions to a 10-1 mark and an appearance in the NAIA Football Championship Series. Langston also won the Central States Football League regular-season title with an 8-0 conference mark. The Lions defense was one of the best in the NAIA last season as they led the nation with a passing defense efficiency of 95.2. The secondary also surrendered just 168.5 passing yards per game and the defense allowed 17.3 points per game, ranking sixth and fourth in the NAIA, respectively. Before starting his collegiate coaching career at Langston, he coached the defensive backs at Mercer Island High School in Washington during the 2016 season. In 2012 and 2013, Burns started coaching at Spanaway Lake High School in Washington. Burns’ playing career included two seasons at Louisville and two seasons at Butte College. During the 2009 season, Burns played in 10 games for Louisville, which was highlighted by a four-tackle game against UConn, where he also recorded an interception. In 2010, Burns finished his sophomore campaign with 37 total tackles, including a Louisville-career-high eight tackles against Pittsburgh. He helped lead the Cards to the Beef O’ Brady Bowl in St. Petersburg, Fla. where Louisville defeated Southern Mississippi, 31-28. At Butte, Burns helped the Roadrunners to a 12-0 mark and a national title at the junior college level during his sophomore campaign. 25

Defensive Line • Damien Goosby

DAMIEN GOOSBY

Defensive Line • 1st season In summer 2018, head coach Perry Thomas announced the hiring of defensive line coach Damien Goosby. Goosby has multiple years of coaching experience at the NCAA DII level as he was recently the defensive line coach at Lincoln University in Missouri. He helped broaden the recruiting aspect into the Kansas City, Northwest Georgia and Atlanta areas. In addition, Goosby directed a unit that led the SIAC, and finished ranked in the Top 10 nationally, in each season. He coached a two-time All-American and helped Albany State finish third in the conference in sacks and fourth in rushing defense. “Campbellsville football is rich in history and has been successful on and off the field,” said Goosby. “The strong academics mixed with a winning tradition makes recruiting easier and that’s 90 percent of coaching.” Goosby, 27, also plans to use his younger age to his advantage. “Being a younger coach helps because most of the things players go through with school, time management, home sickness, etc. is something I’ve also been through in the last 10 years. That’s a positive in my eyes,” said Goosby. Before his time at Lincoln in 2017, Goosby spent time at his alma mater Albany State University. Besides coaching the defensive line, Goosby also managed the weight room and designed off-season workout and conditioning programs for Albany State’s players. Goosby also assisted with special teams. Goosby joined the coaching ranks after a four-year career as a nose tackle at Albany State, helping the Golden Rams win three division titles and a pair of SIAC championships. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Health & Human Performance in 2015 and is pursuing a master’s degree in public administration. 26

Linebackers • Matt Brown

MATT BROWN

Linebackers • 1st season Matt Brown comes to Campbellsville after working previously for three different powerhouse high school programs across the state. His most recent stop was at Lafayette High School the previous three seasons. While at Lafayette, Brown coached the defensive line and special teams, while also working with wide receivers. The Generals had two phenomenal seasons with Brown on the sidelines and reached two KHSAA 6A Championship games. In 2016, Lafayette went 13-2 but lost to Trinity High School in the 6A State Championship. Their only two losses that season came to the Shamrocks. In 2015, the Generals recorded a 12-3 record but lost to Male High School in the 6A finals. From 2012 to 14, Brown held the same coaching positions at Woodford County High School in Versailles, Ky – that was his second stint with the Yellow Jackets. He also coached at Woodford County from 2006 to 2007. In the 2008-2009 seasons, Brown was the defensive coordinator for Paul Lawrence Dunbar in Lexington, Ky. He also worked with the defensive line and was responsible for all aspects of the strength and conditioning programs.

Fighting Tiger Football Turns 31 Since 1987, football at Campbellsville University has had one common goal – a commitment to excellence. The Tiger football program was dormant for 50 years until athletic director Don Bishop, the Athletic Boosters’ Club and athletic committee worked to restore the program in 1987. With the approval of then president Dr. W.R. Davenport, former Russell County High School coach Ron Finley was hired to lead the program’s rebirth. The first four-year varsity program began in 1988 with no scholarships, one full-time assistant coach, five part-time assistants and only a half-time trainer. At the time, few people realized how successful the football program would become, with more than 100 football players enrolling each fall – an increased enrollment that helped offset the original expenses involved in setting up the program. Davenport went on to say that the addition of the program “changed the course of the institution.”

The Tigers narrowly missed the postseason after falling at Georgetown College to end the year. However, the 1992 season ended on a different note. CU knocked off Georgetown for the first time in program history, 29-27, at home on Nov. 14. The win clinched the Tigers’ first Mid-South Football Conference Championship in a three-way tie for first with Georgetown and Union College.

Campbellsville hosted Centre College for its first game Sept. 10, 1988 at what is now known as Finley Stadium. While the ’88 season ended with a 0-11 record, the Tigers captured their first victory on Sept. 9, 1989 with a 20-16 win over the University of Evansville.

Campbellsville topped Georgetown again in 1996 and 1997, leading to an outright Mid-South championship and the program’s first NAIA playoff appearance in 1997. In 2001, CU posted its best record in school history (10-3) and advanced to the NAIA Final Eight against Georgetown.

The following year was Finley’s first winning season with the Tigers (8-2) earning the program’s first national ranking and Finley a Coach of the Year honor. The ’90s became the Tigers’ best decade, as they rose to a No. 2 national ranking in the sixth week of the 1991 season. The Tigers maintained a Top 10 ranking until their undefeated run ended at Lambuth University, 35-31, in week nine.

Finley ended his college coaching career in 2002 with a 77-81-1 record. After the growing pain years of 1988 and 1989, Finley’s Tigers posted a 75-63 record and were 43-32 in his last seven seasons. Mark Peach served as head coach for two seasons before being replaced in 2005 by former Campbellsville athletic director and Carson-Newman College assistant Jim Deaton.

Coach Ron Finley celebrates with Kevin Ray as the Fighting Tigers topped rival Georgetown College on their home field to claim the Mid-South Conference Regular Season Championship in 1997.

Perry Thomas Era

Perry Thomas was hired in 2008 with the mission of restoring the Tiger football program. He returned the Tigers to the postseason in 2010 and 2011 with trips to the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Victory Bowl. The Tigers defeated Greenville College (Ill.) to win the 2011 Victory Bowl title. In 2014, Thomas led the Tigers to the NAIA Playoffs for the first time since 2001, as CU won a share of the Mid-South Conference West Division. The Tigers squared off with Reinhardt University in the 2015 regular season finale and won, 70-56 -- combining for the most points scored in a game and going 5-0 inside the MSC West Division. CU is coming off another big time season in 2017 where it went 8-2 but saw itself on the outside looking in at the NAIA Playoffs. The Tigers instead hosted the Victory Bowl and won their third title over Southwestern Assemblies of God, 41-28. During the first 30 years of the football program, Campbellsville has produced five NAIA First Team All-Americans, along with five NAIA Second Team All-Americans. In addiition, 11 student-athletes earned NAIA Honorable Mention All-American honors. In the NCCAA, three Tigers have been selected as NCCAA Players of the Year. Dwight Houston earned the award in 2011, followed by Jacob Russell in 2015 and Hunter Brown winning the award in 2017.
