TRUST

For more than 30 years, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust (Cultural Trust) has transformed a former downtrodden section of downtown Pittsburgh into a world-class Cultural District that is a national model of urban revitalization through the arts. The best of Broadway, contemporary dance, family-friendly events, cultural showcases and visual arts from around the world are among the variety of arts and entertainment the Cultural Trust presents.

Welcome “There is a direct connection between the growth in Cultural Trust membership and the praise-winning power of our performing and visual arts scene. Such strength in numbers is what attracts more than two million people to the Cultural District throughout the year to enjoy 4,500+ performances, exhibits and events. 2

Hello, You made 2015 one of the most momentous in the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s 31-year history! Thanks to your resounding support, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is now more than 10,000 members strong. Your membership, and that of thousands of other individuals, helped us reach this critical milestone. Having a significant donor base directly contributes to a thriving Cultural District. Thank you for trusting culture to enlighten us, educate us and entertain us, spurring vibrancy in downtown Pittsburgh and beyond.

J. Kevin McMahon and David L. Porges stand before the visual arts installations FOLD by Surabhi Saraf and Home Sweet Home by Avinash Veeraraghavan exhibited at SPACE as part of the Cultural Trust’s India in Focus.

When the 10,000 Member Campaign began in 2011, the Cultural Trust had just over 2,000 members. Since that time, we have made thousands of new friends who are potential multi-year contributors. We extend our special thanks to the Richard King Mellon Foundation for championing the 10,000 Member Campaign, including its generous matching-grant support. We are honored to work arm-and-arm with an organization that understands how important the growth of our membership base is to the Cultural Trust’s long-term financial health. The Cultural Trust’s growing membership builds upon the tremendous support we receive from the foundations, corporations and public officials who help further our work to enhance the region’s quality of life and economic viability. Our special thanks to an Anonymous Donor, Allegheny Regional Asset District, The Benter Foundation, Cohen & Grigsby, Colcom Foundation, Dollar Bank, Eden Hall Foundation, EQT Foundation, The Fine Foundation, Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, Giant Eagle Inc., Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council, The Heinz Endowments, Highmark, Richard King Mellon Foundation, MSA-The Safety Company, Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto, Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership, The Pittsburgh Foundation, PNC Foundation and Vibrant Pittsburgh, among many others. There is a direct connection between the growth in Cultural Trust membership and the praise-winning power of our performing and visual arts scene. Such strength in numbers is what attracts more than two million people to the Cultural District throughout the year to enjoy 4,500+ performances, exhibits and events. And, of course, we do not do this alone. Many arts groups, including our distinguished artistic resident companies, play an important role in attracting audiences to the Cultural District.

On the national stage, our work is distinguished. With a percapita attendance of 3.5 visits in 2015, Pittsburgh ranked #2 among cities our size and outperformed larger metro areas, including Philadelphia (3.4) and Chicago (3.0). The same Culture Across Communities study ranked Pittsburgh #4 overall for increases in attendance over the past four years (+7.9%) — ahead of Cleveland (+1.2%) and Philadelphia (-6.0%). We were pleased in 2015 to help with the re-launch of the August Wilson Center in the Cultural District. The new ownership group, incorporated as the African American Cultural Center, Inc., and led by The Heinz Endowments, The Pittsburgh Foundation and the R.K. Mellon Foundation, hired the Cultural Trust to manage the day-to-day facility operations for the August Wilson Center, as well as oversee its event ticketing, front of house, concessions and visual art installations. In this capacity, the Cultural Trust performed an assessment of the August Wilson Center and helped to restore it for service. In addition, and as requested and funded by the foundation community, the Cultural Trust began to present mission-aligned programming at the Center. The Cultural Trust looks forward to others presenting arts and entertainment at the Center. In closing, we gratefully acknowledge and thank the Cultural Trust’s more than 1,700 volunteers, including our Board of Trustees and Committee members, ushers and on-site festival support staffs. We are fortunate to have the support of a strong and enthusiastic community of volunteers who generously donate their time and talents to the Cultural Trust. Thank you for your support,

David L. Porges Chair, Pittsburgh Cultural Trust President and CEO, EQT Corporation

PROGRAMMING:

2015 Highlights.

Thanks to generous support from presenting sponsor EQT, along with its President/CEO David Porges and his wife Gabriela, the Cultural Trust launched the new EQT Bridge Theater Series, bringing professional, quality theater productions from around the globe to children ages 7–15. The Cultural Trust’s India in Focus presented a world-class selection of art and culture by artists of Indian descent and heritage. The six-week festival showcased classic and contemporary styles in visual art, theater, dance, music and more, with works from globally acclaimed artists as diverse as India’s multi-faceted culture. The first-ever Pittsburgh Humanities Festival, a project of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and the Humanities Center of Carnegie Mellon University, featured internationally renowned academics, artists and intellectual innovators offering interviews, intimate conversations and select performances with a focus on the arts, sciences, policies and politics. VISUAL ARTS:

Thanks to continued funding from Colcom Foundation, the Cultural Trust commissioned the creation and installation of 12 more Public Art Bike Racks in the Cultural District. Participating artists included Brandon Boan, David Calfo, Josh Caputo, Myra Falisz, Stephen House, Alanna James, Keny Marshall, John Peña, Finnbogi Petursson, Robert Raczka, Elise Walton and Brett Yasko. There are now 17 Public Art Bike Racks in the Cultural District.

ACCESSIBILITY:

STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT:

The Cultural Trust partnered with FISA Foundation during Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival in recognition of the Americans with Disabilities Act’s 25th anniversary. The festival included sign language interpretation for main stage performances, accessible activities in the Creativity Zone and open captioning at the festival press announcement. Pittsburgh’s Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America acknowledged these efforts with its Award of Merit.

The Cultural Trust established the Strategic Partnerships & Community Engagement Department in an effort to cultivate mutually beneficial relationships across diverse communities.

EQT Children’s Theater Festival presented sensory-friendly performances of Theater Terra’s Spot. The festival offered large print programs, wheelchair-accessible restrooms and cable covers within the festival footprint. Portable wheelchair lifts were made available for Cultural District theater patrons. The Cultural Trust hosted the mini-conference Understanding Autism in the Arts. REAL ESTATE:

PNC donated the Lantern Building, located at 600 Liberty Avenue in the Cultural District, to the Cultural Trust and it will be utilized as a visual arts gallery. The Cultural Trust began updating and refining plans for the 8th Street Block residential development. New restaurants in the Cultural District: – Täkō, 214 Sixth Street – Bill’s Bar & Burger, 1001 Penn Avenue

The Pittsburgh Dance Council performance by Ronald K. Brown/Evidence included a piece featuring 24 members of various ages and abilities from Pittsburgh’s artistic community.

ARTS EDUCATION:

Gateway to the Arts, which is dedicated to integrating the arts into the lives of Western Pennsylvanians, became a division of the Cultural Trust to strengthen and sustain arts education offerings for area students, educators and the community at large. CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT & PATRON INSIGHTS:

The Cultural Trust began transitioning its various festival websites onto a more robust platform to give attendees easier, faster access to festival content. EQT Children’s Theater Festival and Highmark First Night® Pittsburgh websites were activated in 2015, and new websites for Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival and Gallery Crawl in the Cultural District will be launched in 2016. Cultural Trust theaters were equipped with technologically advanced, handheld ticket scanners to more readily address and resolve patron issues, and contribute to a more welcoming Cultural District patron experience. Upgraded incident management systems were installed in an efforts to elevate personal safety measures in the Cultural District, and to better protect Cultural Trust properties and assets. SHARED SERVICES:

Collaboration is paramount in the Cultural District. A consortium of Cultural District arts organizations, led by the Cultural Trust’s Shared Services department, participates in joint marketing and purchasing that enhances their top lines and redirects financial resources to benefit artistic endeavors. To date, Shared Services, cumulative savings and cost avoidance has reached $14.1 million.

Trust Performing Arts. “Since becoming a Pittsburgh Cultural Trust member 10 years ago, I have a much deeper appreciation for the arts, and how the arts contribute to downtown Pittsburgh’s transformation. I attend a wide variety of performances that the Cultural Trust presents—Broadway, dance, music, theater, visual arts—and unique cultural events that defy categorization, like India in Focus and Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts. Over the years, I’ve also enjoyed countless free events presented by the Cultural Trust, like Gallery Crawls, Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival, and Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival.” —Mark Freeman Mark serves on the Cultural Trust’s Partners Board, and is an active patron of the arts.

Mark is shown here at the Cultural Trust’s Benedum Center before attending a performance.

Trust Families. “My mother, Maranne Welch, was passionate about the importance of the performing arts for children’s development. She saw that the arts gave children a unique means of expression, capturing their emotions and allowing them to explore new ideas and cultures, which is why she established the Pittsburgh Children’s Festival more than 30 years ago. Thanks to my mother, I benefitted as a child from the constant exposure to the arts. I, too, realize this importance and want to carry out her legacy by supporting and contributing to the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s children’s programs.” —Molly Jesso Cultural Trust’s Children’s Theater Programming Advisory Board Member

Trust Visual Arts. “Supporting the Cultural Trust helps to make Pittsburgh an exciting place to live. As I make my way through a Gallery Crawl for a free night of art and entertainment, I feel like I am part of a dynamic arts scene. The Cultural District offers so many outlets for creative expression, and for those of us who want to enjoy a variety of art forms, downtown is the place to be. Thank you, Pittsburgh Cultural Trust!” —Alyssa Calloway Alyssa enjoys the benefits of a Cultural Trust Student Gift Membership, which helps young arts enthusiasts to become more involved with Cultural Trust events and activities.

Trust Arts Collaboration. “ The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has been a valuable resource for Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company over the last decade. With support from the Cultural Trust, our company is in a great venue, smack dab in the center of Pittsburgh’s Cultural District. Our theater company is across from the rebirthed August Wilson Center and is perfectly situated for us to grow and contribute to Pittsburgh’s flourishing arts scene. Supporting the work of the Cultural Trust, in turn, helps to nurture smaller, local arts organizations such as ours, along with many others.” —Mark Clayton Southers Founder and Producing Artistic Director, Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company 24

Trust Membership. “ When I was 10 years old, I remember reading the statement, ‘The arts bring life to life,’ and ever since, the arts have been a very important part of my life. The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust best embodies this declaration. Everything that it does, in fact, brings the arts to life, which impacts Pittsburgh’s quality of life. I support the Cultural Trust because I see how their work contributes to our city’s growth and vitality.” —Jacob George Co-Chair of the Cultural Trust’s Partners Board

Trust Real Estate. “ I have closely watched the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust make strategic investments in the Cultural District real estate for the past 25 years. Their work has encouraged and guided substantial additional investments made by TREK Development Group and many others. In addition to its cultural offerings, their efforts in street-scaping, planting, lighting, wayfinding and other “place-making” endeavors add significant value to downtown Pittsburgh. A vital urban core is a key component to the future economic health of our region and our shared quality of life. I will continue to support the Cultural Trust and co-invest in the Cultural District for the foreseeable future, and I encourage others to do so.” — Bill Gatti Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer TREK Development Group, Inc.

Bill is shown here on 7th Street in the Cultural District outside The Century Building, a project of TREK Development and Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. 36

Trust Culture. “ What does it mean to suggest that the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is committed to our city’s livability? Maybe livability means a place worth caring about—aesthetic amenities, a healthful lifestyle, and safely accessible opportunities for all ages. Colcom Foundation shares the Cultural Trust’s dedication to Pittsburgh’s quality of life and is honored to support the Cultural Trust’s efforts in making Pittsburgh a great place to live, work, play, and visit. The Cultural Trust’s artisan bike racks blend aesthetic form and function, and add to the livability of our community.” — John Rohe Vice President (Philanthropy) and Secretary Colcom Foundation

John is shown here with artist Myra Falisz’s Time Travelin’ Mike, located at 930 Penn Avenue. Thanks to generous support from Colcom Foundation, there are now 17 different Public Art Bike Racks located throughout the Cultural District.

Colcom Foundation supports various Cultural Trust initiatives, including the Bike Valet, Bluegrass Day and the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle/Zero Waste Initiative at Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival.
