YOUR YEAR IN THE CULTURAL DISTRICT

IMMERSED IN MUSIC, ART, AND EVENTS Presenting more than 2,000 events each year, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust (Cultural Trust) strives to make the arts accessible and enjoyable for all. This continual transformation and growth of Pittsburgh’s Cultural District would be impossible without you – thank you!

For more than 30 years, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has led cultural and economic development in Downtown Pittsburgh. The Cultural Trust presents performing arts, owns and operates theaters and galleries in more than one million square feet of real estate, educates and engages with the community, supports Cultural District resident companies and local artists, exhibits visual arts, and cultivates the city’s largest arts neighborhood.

2016 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY

PITTSBURGH’S CULTURAL DISTRICT IS ONE OF THE MOST DIVERSE, CREATIVE, AND VIBRANT URBAN CENTERS IN THE NATION TODAY

HELLO We thank you, and our thousands of other donors, members, and supporters, for helping us make audience experience soar for millions of guests in 2016! The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is dedicated to giving every guest a superior experience, and we spent this past year introducing new ways to keep Pittsburgh’s Cultural District a dynamic and welcoming destination for the arts. With more than 4,000 presentations and events in the Cultural District this past year, we further opened the door to the arts, welcoming more people to enjoy art in Pittsburgh. A positive guest experience informs our work and is at the forefront of everything we do in the Cultural District. Our performing and visual arts programming, theater and art space management, streetscaping, and commitment to accessibility and safety have made Pittsburgh one of the most diverse, creative, and vibrant urban centers in the nation today. Support from our growing membership, as well as foundations, corporations, and public officials, has an enormous impact on the Cultural Trust’s momentum. Our special thanks to the Allegheny County Office of Economic Development, Allegheny Regional Asset District, The Benter Foundation, Cohen & Grigsby, Colcom Foundation, Dollar Bank, Eden Hall Foundation, EQT Foundation, Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, Giant Eagle, Inc., Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council, The Heinz Endowments, Highmark, Richard King Mellon Foundation, UPMC | UPMC Health Plan, Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto, Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership, The Pittsburgh Foundation, PNC Foundation, Vibrant Pittsburgh, and our local elected officials, among many others. We were especially grateful to have been recognized in 2016 by Pittsburgh City Council for our efforts in arts accessibility. The Cultural Trust played a pivotal role in making the Cultural District fully accessible for every guest in 2016 by hosting the Kennedy Center’s Leadership Exchange in Arts and Disability Conference, implementing

diversity and inclusion training for more than 300 volunteer ushers and employees, and adding new patron space to the Promenade level of the Benedum Center. In commitment to the overall protection of our arts community, the Cultural Trust created a Chief Security Officer position to oversee all aspects of security. In 2016, we also saw new, adventurous art forms thrive. The Cultural Trust commissioned Water Cube, the nation’s first public sparkling water dispenser. Water Cube is located in the Cultural District on the 8th Street block of Penn Avenue. We continued our support of stand-up and improvised comedy in the District through updates to Arcade Comedy Theater’s Liberty Avenue space. Ryoji Ikeda’s supercodex (live set) sold out its performance at the Trust Arts Education Center, while Wood Street Galleries hosted the experimental Crucible Sound, an improvisational music series. We activated The Lantern Building, which was generously donated to us by PNC, as a gallery space with an interactive arcade art exhibit during the 2016 Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival. Finally, we are pleased to report that the Cultural Trust’s continued management of day-to-day facility operations yielded a successful year of growth at the August Wilson Center and brought new arts patrons to the Cultural District. Performances in the Center more than tripled, three gallery spaces were transformed and filled with fresh art on a regular basis, and a new guest services center was created. Our commitment to diverse artistic accessibility, integrity, and collaboration is only possible because of more than 1,500 volunteers who serve through the Board of Trustees, advisory boards and committees, usher programs, events, and festivals. Thank you for your continued support. You enable the Cultural Trust to deliver superior art experiences to the Pittsburgh community.

HIGHLIGHTS

2016 HIGHLIGHTS

Patrons enjoy a performance in the Cultural Trust’s Benedum Center for the Performing Arts. This 2,800-seat theater is a focal point of Pittsburgh’s Cultural District. 4

The Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival featured The Anthropology of Motherhood, an artistic nursing and changing area. With support from the La Leche League, Three Rivers Mothers’ Milk Bank, Black Breast Feeding Circle, IKEA, and Happy Baby, the area featured curated art by four local artists and provided parents with a comfortable space to nurse and rest.

VISUAL ARTS PROGRAMMING Programming in the August Wilson Center tripled in 2016 through the Cultural Trust’s continued management of arts presentations in the Center’s 492-seat theater. Multiple Choice was introduced in 2016 as a new performing arts series geared toward young adults and held at the August Wilson Center. Multiple Choice events have no uniform setup and involve varied levels of participation, including a show, a party, and food trucks. The Cultural Trust appointed Scott Shiller, formerly President & CEO of the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, to fill the new role of Vice President of Artistic Planning. The Cohen & Grigsby Trust Presents Series expanded its programming and audience reach. Examples include Basetrack Live — a drama statement piece geared toward family members of veterans — and increased family-friendly programming such as Odd Squad Live! and A Very Electric Christmas. The EQT Bridge Theater Series closed its inaugural season at the 2016 EQT Children’s Theater Festival. The new series, targeting ages 7-15, reached more than 5,000 audience members in the 2015-2016 season. Partnering with the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership and Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council, among other organizations, the Cultural Trust supported Re:NEW Festival — a month-long celebration of creative reuse, sustainability, and transformation. The festival included the North American premiere of Drap-Art, the International Festival of Recycling Art.

Three new gallery spaces were introduced at the August Wilson Center: 1839 Gallery, BNY Mellon Gallery, and Claude Worthington Benedum Gallery. The Cultural Trust filled these galleries with fresh, new art throughout the year, and programmed multiple corresponding receptions and artist talks. In 2016, the Cultural Trust hosted Crucible Sound, an improvisational music series held at Wood Street Galleries. Each month, musicians from different backgrounds and styles collaborated to create live, improvised soundworks. SPACE Gallery was named Pittsburgh City Paper’s “Best Gallery for Local Artists” in 2016. Water Cube, the nation’s first public sparkling water dispenser, debuted in the Cultural District on the 8th Street block of Penn Avenue. A functional public art work that dispenses sparkling and still water for public consumption, Water Cube was designed by GBBN Architects/EdgeStudio and funded with generous support by Colcom Foundation.

ACCESSIBILITY The Cultural Trust hosted the Kennedy Center’s 2016 Leadership Exchange in Arts and Disability (LEAD) Conference, which explores methods for implementing accessibility in cultural environments, communicating information about arts, and providing networking among accessibility professionals. The conference included sessions throughout the Cultural District. Pittsburgh City Council honored the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust for its pivotal role in helping to make the downtown Cultural District more fully accessible for all of its guests.

In partnership with the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council, the Cultural Trust brought Ruth Gould to Pittsburgh. She is the artistic director of DaDaFest, a disability arts organization based in Liverpool, UK. Gould held two public meetings focused on building events that are inclusive and accessible for all artists and audiences. The EQT Children’s Theater Festival expanded its sensory-friendly performance offerings. The festival added three sensory-friendly shows, including commissioning the world premiere of the sensoryfriendly Welcome to Here, created and performed by Bricolage Production Company.

REAL ESTATE City living continued to grow in 2016, with the addition of more than 4,700 residents in the downtown area. Adding in the 9,543 who live in the neighboring North Shore, Strip District, South Shore, Uptown, and Lower Hill, the number of greater downtown residents increased to more than 14,000. The following new restaurants opened in the Cultural District in 2016: Bakersfield 940 Penn Avenue Joe & Pie 955 Liberty Avenue Pork & Beans 136 6th Street Rock ‘n’ Joe 524 Penn Avenue Social House Seven 123 7th Street

FACILITIES

MARKETING

The women’s restroom capacity in the Benedum Center was doubled by leasing space in the adjacent Clark Building. A bridge on the Promenade level connects the Benedum to the new restrooms. In addition, this new area contains a public patron bar, small dining area, a multi-purpose room, and a private bar.

TrustArts.org was completely redesigned, making the site easy to access from any device. Using a mobile device, patrons can now purchase tickets or gift cards, select a seat, print tickets, and exchange subscription tickets.

The Cultural Trust partnered with Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Vision Systems to replace the two 12-yearold large format display boards attached to the Theater Square parking garage complex. The Cultural Trust can now better provide high quality images to promote performances, festivals, galleries, and a vibrant downtown experience in the Cultural District. Access to this valuable resource is given to resident and touring companies in the Cultural Trust’s theaters. Planning for the development of the 8th Street block was renewed in 2016 as the Cultural Trust looks to encourage exceptional residential, commercial, and retail opportunities to this valuable property. The site offers inspiring city and waterfront views, and will promote excellent design, pedestrian-friendly open space for programming and world-class public art, and a commitment to the highest sustainability measures.

Gift certificates can now be printed at home or emailed directly to a recipient. Also, patrons wishing to create TrustArts.org accounts can authenticate using Facebook.

SECURITY In 2016, the Cultural Trust implemented critical measures to assure the safety of everyone who visits the Cultural District. • The Cultural Trust named Kevin C. Wilkes, a veteran detective of the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police and security risk management consultant, as the new Chief Security Officer (CSO). This position oversees all aspects of the Campus Security Plan, including performance venues, art galleries, public spaces, and all other Cultural Trust-owned and managed property.

Ten dollar tickets were introduced for each Pittsburgh Dance Council show in the 2016-2017 season, bringing more than 1,000 new arts patrons to the Cultural District. These tickets sold out for every Dance Council performance in 2016. The Trust Cabaret Series sold out on subscription for the first time in its history, and added a second show due to popular demand for Billy Porter’s seasonopening performance.

• A Prohibited Items Policy, Bag Policy, and Guest Code of Conduct were implemented to support the best guest experience in the Cultural District. • New partnership and cooperation with the City of Pittsburgh’s Department of Public Safety included off-duty police officer presence at all ticketed venue performances and festivals. In partnership with ALCO Parking, an off-duty uniformed police officer was also positioned at the Theater Square garage and Katz Plaza area during Cultural Trust peak seasons and hours of operation. • The Cultural Trust was the first organization in Pittsburgh to partner with the Department of Homeland Security on the “If You See Something, Say Something™” campaign.

FedEx Ground returned as the Highmark First Night Pittsburgh parade sponsor, and expanded its support to Gateway to the Arts. Thanks to a grant from the Allegheny Regional Asset District (RAD), the Cultural Trust hosts new captioning equipment, sensory-friendly performance and event supplies, and a portable wheelchair lift. This equipment is shared throughout the Pittsburgh arts community.

HIGHLIGHTS Members of the Cultural Trust continued to help make the arts accessible for everyone. The Cultural Trust thanked members for their patronage through special event opportunities, including enhanced experiences at festivals, special seating, and member appreciation events. In 2016, the Cultural Trust raised in excess of $11 million in support of day-to-day operations, performing and visual arts programming, and special projects. Citizens Bank generously became presenting sponsor for the Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival. GNC debuted 3-D Live First Night Extravaganza, which used 14 high definition projectors to present a milestone in storytelling at GNC World Headquarters.

The Snee-Reinhardt Charitable Foundation provided a grant for sensory-friendly programming at the 2016 EQT Children’s Theater Festival and Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival. The fund contributed to the Quiet Area at each festival, which provided a safe space for children and adults on the autism spectrum. The Cultural Trust’s Parisian-inspired Glam Slam Gala! was held at the Benedum Center. The annual gala exceeded its fundraising goal with lead sponsor UPMC, Co-Chairs Diane and Jerry Holder, and presenting sponsor MSA - The Safety Company. The Redevelopment Authority of Allegheny County’s Community Infrastructure and Tourism Fund (CITF) generously supported a project to replace two large format display boards attached to the Theater Square parking garage complex. The boards serve all arts users and partner organizations within the Cultural District, providing messaging for upcoming performing and visual arts programming.
