2012-2013 Men’s Basketball

2012-2013 Men’s Basketball

Barclay R adebaugh

Head Coach

East Tennessee State, 1987 * Eighth year at Charleston Southern Barclay Radebaugh enters his eighth season as head men’s basketball coach at Charleston Southern and looks to build on a 2011-2012 campaign which proved to be one of the most successful in program history. Radebaugh earned Big South Conference Coach of the Year honors for his efforts, as the Bucs went 19-12 and advanced to the conference tournament semifinals behind a starting lineup which featured three freshmen and a junior college transfer. CSU’s 19 wins were the program’s most since 1994-1995, as the Bucs secured their first winning season since 1996-1997. Senior Kelvin Martin led the way for Radebaugh’s young group, as the forward played his way onto the all-conference first team while earning a nod as the league’s defensive player of the year for a second consecutive season. Radebaugh was also instrumental in the growth of freshmen guards Saah Nimley and Arlon Harper, as the two started 56 of a possible 62 games and were unanimous selections to the conference’s all-freshmen team. The freshmen duo helped power a CSU offense which featured outstanding balance and featured four players in double figures for the majority of the season (Martin, Nimley, Harper, and Mathiang Muo). As a team, CSU finished the season 22nd nationally in scoring (76. 9 ppg), 20th in three-point field goals per game (8.4), 30th in three-point field goal percentage (38.0%), 40th in steals per game (8.1) and 27th in turnover margin (+2.7). The Bucs opened the season in style when they led Big 12 power Kansas State by 14 at halftime, before taking the Wildcats all the way to the wire in a 72-67 loss. Radebaugh’s squad also enjoyed a home-and-away sweep of Atlantic Sun foe Stetson, a 33-point home victory over VMI, a road win over Liberty, an 18-point blowout of then first-place Campbell, a triumph at Big South regular season and tournament champion and preivously undefeated UNC Asheville, a home win over rival Winthrop, a sweep of Presbyterian and a conference tournament win over Liberty. CSU also continued to enjoy a distinct home court advantage, posting a 12-2 mark to improve to 35-7 at the Buc Dome over the last three seasons. CSU took a step forward in 2010-2011 as well, as it went 16-6 overall and 9-9 in the Big South, finishing sixth in the conference. The Bucs were particularly good at home, as they won their first ten games inside Buccaneer Fieldhouse and teamed with the women’s program to hold the distinction of being one of the last four schools in Division I to have both teams undefeated on their home court. The Bucs would conclude the season 12-3 at home, highlighted by a second straight win over The Citadel, and conference victories over the likes of rivals Winthrop and UNC Asheville. In his first season at CSU, Radebaugh put his imprint on the program immediately by leading the Bucs to a 13-16 overall record and an appearance in the Big South Tournament Semifinals. The Buccaneers also beat the College of Charleston for the first time since 1988, and captured the city championship for the first time since 1986 with a victory over The Citadel. The Bucs followed this performance with a second consecutive city championship in 2006. Big home victories over High Point, Liberty and Coastal Carolina highlighted his third season at the helm. The Buccaneers also set a Big South record with 10 Freshman of the Week honors, capped off by Omar Carter earning Big South Freshman of the Year. Under the direction of Radebaugh, Jamarco Warren had a breakout sophomore campaign during the 2008-09 season, breaking the CSU single season record for three pointers made with 99. Radebaugh has an impressive coaching resume from a career that began in 1986 as a student assistant coach at East Tennessee State under Les Robinson. After stops at Wofford and Furman, Radebaugh began a seven-year stay at South Carolina.

Charleston Southern University While at South Carolina, the Gamecocks won the SEC regular season title and received a number two seed in the 1997 NCAA tournament. In 1998, the Gamecocks finished the season ranked 14th and received a number three seed in the NCAA tournament. At South Carolina, Radebaugh was the position coach for USC’s all-time leading scorer B.J. McKie, all-time three-point scorer Jamel Bradley, and all-time steals leader Chuck Eidson, the cousin of former Buccaneer Director of Operations Sean Sweeney.

Hite went on to play in the NBA. Diaz was drafted in the second round by the Los Angeles Clippers, and Hite enjoyed a stint with the Miami Heat.

Radebaugh continued his success as an assistant at Winthrop University, helping the Eagles to back-to-back Big South Conference titles and an NCAA tournament berth in 2002.

Radebaugh and his wife, Hope, have three children: Anna (20), Reid (15) and Sophia (14).

Radebaugh then spent one season as the head coach at Queens University in Charlotte, guiding the Royals to a 21-8 record overall and a 14-4 record in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference. There, Radebaugh coached Spencer Ross who was named the Sporting News Division II National Player of the Year. Spencer was the only Division II player in the country invited to the Plymouth, Va. NBA pre-draft camp.

The next and final stop before CSU would be serving as an assistant coach at Miami. In his one season at the school, the Hurricanes finished 16-13, which was good enough for a sixth place finish in the ACC and an invitation to the NIT. Radebaugh served as the position coach for Guillermo Diaz who was second-team all-ACC, and Robert Hite, who earned Honorable Mention all-ACC honors. Both Diaz and

2012-2013 Men’s Basketball

2012-2013 Men’s Basketball What is your program philosophy? We want to use basketball to teach our players about life and to give our players an opportunity to have a lifelong relationship with Jesus Christ. #2, to graduate players. We want every player who completes his eligibility at CSU to leave with a degree. #3, We desire to build character. Sports is a great tool to build character, lifelong character, and we take every opportunity to do that in our program. #4 is to grow leaders. We want each of our players to leave our program not only understanding leadership, but having an opportunity to display that leadership. What can we expect from a Barclay Radebaugh-coached team? We have four pillars that we want to be the foundation of our team. #1, we want to prepare extremely hard. We want to leave every practice and every game knowing that we exerted every ounce of energy that we possibly have. #2 is to play great defense. We want to pressure the ball and take teams out of things that they are comfortable doing. #3, to rebound with a passion, both on the offensive end and the defensive end. #4 is to share the ball. We want our teams to play with great unselfishness, and to turn down a good shot to get a great shot.

What is the importance of having so many impact players return? Leadership and experience. Our returners understand what we expect from them and they have a very solid base of experience. What is your favorite memory from coaching? I have many tremendous memories. I have enjoyed every day of my career. Some highlights have been: winning the SEC regular season championship at the University of South Carolina; every NCAA Tournament has been extremely special; taking our team to Poland was a memory that I’ll never forget. But my greatest memories have been having the opportunity to share the journey with my family, who I love so much. I love being a coach.

After whom do you pattern your coaching? I’ve had three main mentors in my career: Eddie Fogler, Gregg Marshall and Alan LeForce. Almost everything I do you can trace back to one of these three coaches. I love these three coaches. I also learned a great deal from Frank Hath during my time at Miami. He is a tremendous coach. My greatest mentors are, of course, my parents. I am blessed to have the mother and father that I do. How does this year’s team match up with others you have coached? I have a great feeling about this team. They come to work every day. They are willing defenders and really work on the defensive end of the court. We are very deep and we will use that depth. As long as we defend, rebound, share the ball and play with great passion we will be fine. What are the expectations for this year’s team? I am very excited to see this team grow. There is something special about this group. We compete; we care about each other and we have great leadership. We can play with everybody on our schedule. I expect to improve every day and put ourselves in a position to compete for a Big South Championship. How will the nonconference schedule prepare the team for the Big South season? Wow, what a schedule. This is by far our most difficult schedule. Every game is challenging. We are looking forward to the non-conference schedule with hopes that it will prepare us for the Big South season.

BJ McKie

Assistant Coach

South Carolina, 1999 * Second year at Charleston Southern Former University of South Carolina standout BJ McKie begins his second year on head coach Barclay Radebaugh’s staff in 2012-2013. McKie made quite an impact in his first season as a coach following a distinguished playing career, as he teamed with Radebaugh and fellow first-year assistants Brad Dobbels and Ahmad Smith to lead CSU to its first winning season since 1996-1997 en route to a T-3rd finish and a spot in the Big South Tournament Semifinals. McKie was instrumental in the growth of freshman guards Saah Nimley and Arlon Harper, as the duo started a combined 56 games and helped power a CSU offense which finished the season 22nd in scoring, 20th in three-point field goals per game, and 30th in three-point field goal percentage. For their individual efforts, Nimley and Harper were each named to the Big South AllFreshman team. The Bucs also received strong efforts from junior Jeremy Sexton and sophomore Sheldon Strickland, as well as a breakout campaign from sophomore Chris Grier. McKie joined the coaching ranks after completing a professional playing career in Europe, and is now reunited with Radebaugh, who served as an assistant coach during McKie’s time at USC. A native of Norfolk, Va., McKie finished his playing career at South Carolina (1996-99) as the Gamecocks’ all-time leading scorer with 2,119 career points and was honored by the Southeast Conference as an SEC Basketball Legend as part of its class of 2011. McKie was named the 1996 SEC Freshman of the Year, and is just the 12th player in league history to earn Associated Press First Team SEC honors for three seasons. The two-time team captain played in 123 consecutive games at the guard position, scoring in double figures 111 times and recording 38 games with 20 or more points. McKie averaged 17.3 points per game as senior and finished third in SEC scoring that season. In 1997, McKie averaged 17.4 ppg to lead the Gamecocks to their first ever SEC basketball title. South Carolina appeared in the NCAA Tournament in both 1997 and 1998, ranking 14th in the nation and receiving the number three seed in the 1998 NCAA Tournament. He is one of five Gamecock players to have his jersey retired. Following his career at USC, McKie competed professionally for a number of teams overseas. McKie played for BCM Gravelines in France, Keravnos in Cyprus, as well as Avitos Geissen and TBB Trier in Germany. He also spent time with Pepsi Caserta and Nuova Pallacanestro Pavia in Italy; Maccabi Haifa Heat and Hapoel Afula in Israel. In 2004, McKie was named a Basketball Budesliga (Player of the Year) while competing in Germany. He was also a 2001 CBA All-Star while playing for the Connecticut Pride of the Continental Basketball Association. McKie is married to the former Brittany Brooks. He has one son, Justin.

Ahmad Smith

Assistant Coach

Appalachian State, 2004 * Second year at Charleston Southern Ahmad Smith enters his second year as an assistant to head coach Barclay Radebaugh in 2012-2013. Along with fellow first-year assistant coaches Brad Dobbels and BJ McKie, Smith made an immediate impact in his return to college coaching after spending three years in several capacities, including that of head coach, in Ireland. A former player and coach at Appalachian State, Smith helped foster the growth of freshman forwards Cedrick Bowen and Paul Gombwer in 2011-2012. Bowen started the first 22 games of the season for the Bucs at center, while Gombwer started the final nine and was a force on the offensive glass, ranking 12th in the Big South with 79 for the year (better than 2.5 per game). The duo also provided some inside scoring punch as well to help CSU to a 19-win season for the first time since 1994-1995. Radebaugh had this to say about the addition to his coaching staff: “Ahmad is a super addition to our staff. His character and commitment quickly became apparent during the interview process. Ahmad will be a great asset to our program in recruiting and on the floor coaching. He also has many valuable life experiences that will benefit our players as he joins with our main mission of growing and mentoring young men both on and off the court. We are thrilled that Ahmad and his wife, Theresa, are joining the CSU basketball family.” Smith came to CSU from Dublin, Ireland, where he honed his coaching skills from 2008 on. Most recently, Smith served as the technical director for the Templeogue Basketball Club. He was also the head basketball coach for the Men’s Division I, U17 and U18 teams. In 2011, the Division I men’s team finished fifth, improving five spots from the year before Smith’s arrival. Prior to that, Smith was the head men’s and women’s basketball coach at Institute of Technology Tallaght College in Dublin, finished as the 2011 women’s team champions and the 2011 men’s team runners-up. He holds a career 74-45 record as a head coach, including time with the Colaiste Eanna High School U19 Boys (20092011), and the Shamrock Rovers Hoops Professional Superleague, where he coached from August 2008 to March 2010. Before leaving for Ireland, Smith was an assistant coach at Appalachian State University from 2004-08, helping lead the Mountaineers to a school-record 25 wins in 2006-07, a North Division regular season SoCon Championship in 2008 and a San Juan Shootout Tournament championship in 2007. As a player, Smith spent two years at Cedar Valley Junior College, earning NJCAA All-American honors while leading his team to an NJCAA National Championship in 2001. He earned the school’s student-athlete award and earned multiple conference honors, including all-conference and freshman of the year honors, before moving on to play two years for the Mountaineers in the Southern Conference. “Very few college coaches are good at every aspect of college coaching. Ahmad is one of those rare coaches. His time at Appalachian State combined with his head coaching experience in Ireland has given him a working knowledge of everything we do. He is a talented recruiter, strong floor coach and a wonderful example/mentor to our players.” - Coach Radebaugh

Brad Dobbels

Assistant Coach

Charleston Southern,1989 * Second year at Charleston Southern Brad Dobbels begins his second year on Coach Barclay Radebaugh’s staff in 2012-2013, following an accomplished run as the head coach at nearby Goose Creek High School. Dobbels, a former standout for the Baptist College Buccaneers from 1987-1989, made an immediate impact in his first season, helping the Bucs to a 19-12 record and a berth in the Big South Tournament Semifinals. Dobbels’ coaching acumen was particularly beneficial toward CSU’s offensive production, which proved to be prolific in 2011-2012. Four players averaged in double figures for much of the year as the Bucs concluded the season ranked 22nd in the country in scoring, 20th in three-point field goals per game, and 30th in three-point field goal percentage. “We are very pleased to announce the addition of Brad Dobbels to our coaching staff,” said Radebaugh at the time of Dobbels’ hiring in summer 2011. “Brad is an outstanding coach who has prepared himself well for this next step. He has led Goose Creek High School to new and exciting levels of success. He has won numerous championships and has established Goose Creek as one of the premier high school programs in the southeast. Brad also worked with the TMP (Trademark Properties) AAU basketball program, which is one of the finest AAU programs in the country. He has a tremendous knowledge of the game, is a keen tactician and is big-game tested. Brad is a CSU alum who loves the university and will be a key figure as we continue our march towards winning the Big South Conference.” A native of Overland Park, Kan., Dobbels played for the Baptist College Buccaneers from 1987-1989 after transferring from Cloud County (KS) Community College. He is third all-time in CSU history in three-point percentage at .435. He also ranks fourth on the school’s single season free-throw percentage list with a .836 in 1987-88, sinking 41 shots from beyond the arc that season. Dobbels was the first Buccaneer to sink more than 100 career three-pointers, making 101 in his career. He graduated from then-Baptist College in 1989 with a degree in Social Science. He later earned an MAT in Social Studies from the university. Dobbels was the head coach at Goose Creek High School from 1997-2011, compiling an impressive record of 282-92. In 2008-09, the Gators went 7-0 in league play and 27-2 overall under Dobbels, winning the Class AAAA State Championship. A perennial title contender, the Gators went 19-8 in 2010-11. Prior to his time in Goose Creek, Dobbels was the head coach at Hunter-Kinard-Taylor High School in Neeses, S.C. Under his tutelage, Gator guard DeVontae Wright developed into a Division I recruit and is now playing for cross-town rival The Citadel. Dobbels boasts a career record of 329-124, and has a state championship, five Lower State championship game appearances and six region championships. Dobbels has also collected numerous coaching accolades. Dobbels and his wife Michelle have been married for 26 years. They are the parents of Jacob (26) and Jared (17). “Brad brings great experience to our staff. He is a veteran coach that is big game tested. The outstanding job he did at Goose Creek was not by accident. He knows how to win and is skilled at his craft. We are fortunate to have Brad on our staff.” - Coach Radebaugh

Charleston Southern University The Charleston Southern Buccaneers find themselves in a rare position headed into the 2012-2013 season. Returning one of the top scoring backcourts in the country, the Bucs are one of the Big South Conference favorites (South Division) in the preseason poll. Expectations are high, coming off a 19-12 season, that this could be the year the Buccaneers reach the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history. The season begins on Friday as CSU faces Charlotte. Tipoff is at 6 p.m. in Halton Arena on the Charlotte campus. Led by two high-scoring sophomore guards and a pair of explosive seniors, the Bucs roll into the most anticipated CSU basketball season in the program’s recent history. However, CSU and head coach Barclay Radebaugh do have on giant hole to fill before they can begin to look ahead. The Bucs must replace Big South Defensive Player of the Year and the team’s leading scorer, Kelvin Martin. Martin, a first team All-Big South selection, averaged 15.4 points per game and over nine rebounds in leading CSU to an 11-7 mark in Big South Play. “After the preseason poll came out, we talked about it for one day,” Radebaugh said during game-week preparations. “We haven’t mentioned it since, and we won’t mention it again. We know the Big South is very tough and talented with a lot of talented players and very good coaching. We know it’s going to be a battle every night. We also know that our pre-conference schedule is the toughest we’ve ever had here. We’re more interesting the process, more interested in getting better today.” The Bucs’ non-conference schedule is one of the most intriguing and challenging in school history. CSU opens against the A-10’s Charlotte on Friday, Nov. 9 before traveling to Tuscon, Ariz. two days later to face the Arizona Wildcats. CSU opens its home slate on Thursday, Nov. 15 at the Buc Dome against Hiwasse College, before hosting East Tennessee State in the first game of a home-and-home on Nov. 20. The Bucs also face Alabama the day after Thanksgiving in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The return game to face ETSU in Johnson City, Tenn. is Dec. 18 followed by a trip to Wichita State on Dec. 20. The Bucs’ will face fellow-Charleston foes College of Charleston and The Citadel both in the Buc Dome. CSU hosts the Cougars for the first time in almost 20 years on the CSU campus on Wednesday, Nov. 28 and hosts The Citadel on Dec. 4. Big South Conference play opens on Jan. 5 as the Bucs travel to Radford. CSU hosts Winthrop on Jan. 9 in its Big South home opener, followed by key league games with UNC Asheville (Jan. 16), Campbell (Feb. 9), the North Division preseason favorite, and Coastal Carolina (March 2) for Senior Day. The visitmyrtlebeach.com Big South Championships are March 5-10 in Myrtle Beach, S.C. In all, The Bucs face three teams which reached last year’s NCAA Tournament (Alabama, Wichita State, and UNC Asheville), in addition to one of the nation’s top programs in Arizona. Radebaugh begins his eighth season as the Buccaneers head coach. He was named the 2011-‘12 Big South Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Bucs to a third-place finish in league play and in the Big South Tournament. The Bucs’ 19 wins were the most since the 1995-‘96 season and tied for the third-most in school history. Seniors Jeremy Sexton and Mathiang Muo will lead a Bucs squad which features only one freshman and five sophomores. Sexton is on pace to become the 18th Buccaneer to reach the 1,000-point plateau for his career, joining Martin from a season ago. He averaged 8.8 points per game last season and had a season-high 19 against Kansas State in the opener. Muo is a 6-for-5 wing who is most comfortable shooting the three, but will also slide into the post. He shot 43.5 percent from beyond the arc last season and was 13-for-18 in a two-game span in wins over High Point and

2012-2013 Men’s Basketball Gardner-Webb. He had a career high 26 on eight made three-pointers against HPU. “We’ve been pleased with the leadership of Jeremy and Mathiang,” Radebaugh said. “They have taken that role very seriously. They have done a great job of leading in the locker room, leading on the court and we’ve been pleased with them. They have big shoes to fill, and they know that with the loss of Kelvin’s leadership.” Sophomore guards Arlon Harper and Saah Nimley are the Bucs’ backcourt mates which comprise one of the top sophomore scoring tandems in the country. Both earned Big South All-Freshman team honors last season and combined to earn Big South Freshman of the Week honors five times. Nimley has been named to the Preseason All-Big South first team, while Harper earned a second team spot. Radebaugh is keeping his explosive, young guards focused on the making their teammates better. “We don’t talk about individual accolades, we talk about team goals.” Radebaugh added. “Arlon and Saah are the first to say that the strength of our team is our depth. They are a very important part of what we are doing, but they are a part. We feel like we’re talented in the backcourt. We feel like Saah, Arlon, Jeremy and (Sheldon) Strickland along with the development of Matt Kennedy, really gives us a very deep and talented backcourt.” Nimley averaged 13.5 points and 3.9 assists in starting every game as a freshman. He scored in double figures in 15-of-17 games in the middle of the season, including a career-high 24 in a home win over VMI. Harper averaged 12.5 points per game in his freshman season, shooting 40.1 percent from three-point range. His career high 28 points came in the Bucs’ win over UNC Asheville, who reached the NCAA Tournament. Junior guard Sheldon Strickland was an all-freshman selection two years ago and averaged 5.0 points per game last season. He gives the Bucs a fifth high-scoring guard and one of the deepest backcourts in the Big South. Strickland had a season high 17 against Liberty last season. A trio of juniors; Mitchell Deter, Matt Kennedy, and Thomas Odom give the Bucs three upperclassmen at the guard spot who could play spot minutes. Sophomores Cedrick Bowen and Paul Gombwer are the heirs to Martin’s historical career inside for CSU. Both are part of what has quickly become a promising sophomore class for Radebaugh. “In both our scrimmages, we had significant edges on the boards,” Radebaugh said. “We’ve been real pleased with our rebounding. We had to really focus on being very fundamental on boxing out the right way. Kelvin got so many rebounds in such odd ways. We’ve really had to adjust to that as a team. Through two scrimmages, we’ve been real pleased with our rebounding.” Bowen started 22 games as a freshman and averaged 4.5 points and 2.3 rebounds in his first season as a Buc, while Gombwer was second on the team grabbing 5.6 boards and pouring in 5.0 points per game. Gombwer put together two double-doubles as a freshman, highlighted by a 14-point, 10-rebound effort in a Bucs’ win over Gardner-Webb in February. Bowen had a career-high 17 points and six rebounds in CSU’s comeback win over Stetson. Big-bodied sophomore Greg Dorleus (6’9, 250) and junior-college transfer Allie Fullah (6’8, 240) add size and potential to CSU’s front line. Redshirt junior Joe Williams and true freshman Malcolm Bernard give Radebaugh a pair of versatile athletes to turn to on his bench. Both will see their first action at CSU this season. Williams redshirted last season after transferring to CSU, while Bernard is the lone freshman on the Bucs’ roster.

2012-2013 Men’s Basketball “Mathiang is one of the better shooters in our league. He, like so many of our players stayed in Charleston all summer and worked on his game and in the weight room. People did not know that Mathiang played all of last season while rehabbing his knee from surgery. His mobility has greatly improved and we are counting on Mathiang to have a super senior year as a leader and a player.” - Coach Radebaugh

Charleston Southern University BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE QUICK FACTS Address: 7233 Pineville-Matthews Road, Suite 100 Charlotte, NC 28226 Phone: (704) 341-7990 Fax: (704) 341-7991 www.BigSouthSports.com Founded 1983 President Penelope W. Kyle, Radford University Vice President Dr. Frank Bonner, Gardner-Webb University Secretary Dr. Anne Ponder, UNC Asheville

The Big South Conference took a big step in its young history in the Fall of 2002 when, for the first time in its 19-year history, the League crowned a football champion. Football had always been a long range goal of the Conference. In the early 1990s, football seemed on the horizon in the Big South, as Charleston Southern fielded its first team in 1991 and the Conference added Liberty as a new member, which was already playing on the gridiron. However, football never got off the ground in the early part of the decade as other issues came to the forefront, including the Big South’s emergence as a basketball conference. The League was awarded its first automatic bid to the NCAA men’s basketball championship in 1992 and football was put on the back burner while basketball began to flourish.

The idea was revived in 1997 when Elon joined the Big South. That gave the Conference three fulltime members with football programs -- half the number needed to be recognized as a Conference Full-Time Member Institutions (11): by the NCAA. Two years later on Nov. 10, 1999, Campbell University, Charleston Southern Coastal Carolina University announced it would University, Coastal Carolina University, add football by the Fall of 2003. The wheels were Gardner-Webb University, High Point University, Liberty University, Presbyterian set in motion to establish a Conference home for the League’s football-playing members. After attempts to form a joint football conference with the Atlantic Sun Conference failed, the Big South began recruiting more members to join its fledgling football league. On May 23, 2001, the dream became a reality when the Big South’s Council of Chief Executive Officers voted unanimously to add football as the Conference’s 18th championship sport. It became the first sport added since 1997 when men’s and women’s indoor track were incorporated as championship sports. Shortly after the approval of football, the Big South’s recruiting efforts paid off, as the addition of Gardner-Webb University as an associate football member was announced on June 20, 2001. There were hopes that with the addition of the Runnin’ Bulldogs, a four-team League could begin play later that Fall, with Coastal Carolina

coming into the fold in the 2003 season. However, scheduling conflicts could not be worked out, so the Fall of 2002 was designated as the kick-off to Big South Football. The Big South continued to look for additional members, with a goal of eventually having seven or eight playing members. On Dec. 10, 2001, one of the oldest programs in the state of Virginia -- Virginia Military Institute, announced it would join the Big South in all sports in 2003 and maintain the Conference’s football membership at five following Elon’s departure. In 2006, the League moved one step closer to etching its status as a viable football Conference. First, Coastal Carolina Athletic Director Warren Koegel was appointed to the FCS Football Selection Committee, the Big South’s first-ever representative on a national football committee. On April 6, the Big South added Presbyterian College as its sixth football member. Presbyterian, now in the final year of its transition to Division I, officially joined the Big South in all sports in 2008. On May 26, 2006, the Big South announced that associate football member Gardner-Webb would join the Conference as full members on July 1, 2008, solidifying the Big South’s football make-up for years to come. With membership coming together, the Big South received a huge boost at the conclusion of the 2006 campaign. League champion Coastal Carolina became the first football member to advance to the postseason when the Chanticleers received an at-large berth in the NCAA Division I Football Championship. The Big South took another step closer to becoming eligible for an automatic berth when on March 20, 2007, the Conference announced the addition of Stony Brook University as an associate football member beginning in 2008. All the efforts came to fruition in the spring of 2008 when the NCAA announced the expansion of the FCS Playoffs from 16 to 20 teams beginning in 2010 and granting the Big South an automatic

2012-2013 Men’s Basketball

2012-2013 Men’s Basketball bid starting that year. The growth of Big South football has been exceptional since its inception just nine years ago. The Big South experienced its most successful campaign in 2006 with Coastal Carolina’s FCS playoff berth; two teams (Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern) ranked in the national Top 25 in the same week for the first time; four appearances on the ESPN family of networks; and the first-ever NFL Draft pick and first finalist for the Walter Payton Award in Coastal Carolina’s Tyler Thigpen. In 2007, Liberty won the first of its four consecutive Big South football championships in record-breaking fashion just two years after finishing 1-10 overall; Coastal’s Jerome Simpson (second round) and GardnerWebb’s Brian Johnston (seventh round) were selected in the NFL Draft, and the League’s five football members combined to average a Big Southrecord 7,488 fans per game. The Big South produced another nationallyranked program in 2008 in Liberty, as well as its fourth NFL draft pick in three years – Liberty’s Rashad Jennings (seventh round).

Gardner-Webb won in overtime at Akron and Liberty defeated Ball State on the road on Sept. 11. Prior to the start of the season, Stony Brook extended its football membership through the 2015 campaign. Individually, Liberty’s Mike Brown led the nation in total offense while Stony Brook was the only FCS team to have two 1,000-yard rushers in Miguel Maysonet and Brock Jackolski. Coastal Carolina emerged from a three-way tie for firstplace with the Big South’s first-ever automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs. The Chanticleers also became the first Conference member to host a football playoff game as Coastal faced Western Illinois in the first round at Brooks Stadium. The Conference also had its largest television package to date, as a record eight League games were broadcast while Big South football members appeared on TV 12 of the 13 weeks of the season. With an automatic playoff berth officially awarded to its annual champion, the Big South is poised to continue its ascension as a national competitor in FCS football with an eye on advancing in the postseason and capturing the ultimate goal – a national championship.

The 2010 season saw the Big South make noise around the country early in the season with two wins over FBS opponents on the same day, when
