Fred Applin Head Coach 2nd Season Elon ‘85 Fred Applin begins his second season as the head coach of the CSU women’s basketball team after assuming the mantle of the 15th coach in program history in 2012 after serving as an assistant with both the East Carolina and Wake Forest programs.

In his first season with the Buccaneers, CSU persevered through a rash of early injuries in earning a bid to the 2013 Big South Conference Championships. Senior forward Lakeitha Alston capped off her career in earning Second Team AllConference honors for the Buccaneers in Applin’s first season, finishing up with averaging 15.8 points per game and 6.7 rebounds per game to lead the Bucs in both categories.

He also assisted in all areas of the program, including scouting, coaching, academic support and game preparation. Prior to his time in Greenville, Applin was an assistant at the University of Washington, where he also served as the recruiting coordinator. His 2008 recruiting class was ranked in the top 15 for HoopGurlz.com and was ranked one of the top five in the then-Pac-10 by the same organization. From 2004-07, Applin was the Associate Head Coach at Wake Forest University, where his recruiting classes were also highly touted. In 2006, his recruits ranked in the top 30 by Blue Star Basketball Report and in the top 25 of All-Star Girls Report’s rankings. He also helped guide the Demon Deacons to the Elite 8 of the 2005 WNIT. While serving as an assistant at the University of Texas (1998-2004), Applin signed three McDonald AllAmericans (Nina Norman, Tiffany Jackson and Kalee Carey) as well as four Women’s Basketball Coaches Association/Nike All-Americans (Norma, Jackson, Carey and Erneisha Bailey). Three of his players – Jamie Carey, Jackson and Edwina Brown – went on to play in the WNBA.

Applin boasts in impressive resume with experience in the ACC, Big 12, Pac 12 and Conference USA. He arrives in Charleston after spending two seasons in Greenville, N.C., where he was an assistant under head coach Heather Macy at East Carolina University. Applin served as the recruiting coordinator for the Pirates, corresponding with potential studentathletes, parents and high school and AAU coaches.

Season Outlook An abundance of fresh faces and a fighter’s mentality will take over the Charleston Southern sidelines this season as the Buccaneers women’s basketball team prepares for their second season under the guidance of head coach Fred Applin. Applin returns for his second season on the Buccaneer s sidelines this year and looks to continue to build on last season’s successes with a lineup that will feature a mostly brand-new roster with only four letter-winners returning from last year’s squad. “I am excited about this season,” commented Applin on the team makeup and the challenges ahead. “We have seven new players and three players that are coming off of ACL injuries, and we are going to have to compete for 40 minutes. We’re going to have to take care of the small things, such as winning the boards and taking care of the ball to win games, especially with only three returning players from last year that have NCAA Division I experience.” Charleston Southern looks to overcome the loss of five seniors from last year’s team and will feature a number of new faces on the sidelines this year as the above mentioned seven newcomers will see action on the court this year in the CSU Blue and Gold. The Buccaneers were picked 10th in the annual Big South Preseason Coaches’ poll released in early October after an 8-20 season where CSU went 3-15 in conference play. If the Bucs are to advance further into the postseason this year, it will be behind the senior leadership of Erin

Juniors

Bratcher, DJ Fowler, Anicia Dotson and Kirklin Kirkpatrick. The quartet return as the most experienced members of the CSU women’s basketball team, while sophomore center Monique Maximilien also returns after seeing action in all 28 games last season for the Bucs, earning four starts in her first collegiate season. Charleston Southern opens up the 2013-2014 regular season on the road on November 8th, traveling to Columbia, S.C., to take on South Carolina, with tipoff set for 7 p.m. The Bucs open their home schedule the following week, hosting Southern Wesleyan inside the Buc Dome on November 12th, with tipoff at 7 p.m. Guards Seniors Bratcher and Fowler return to reprise their roles at point guard and shooting guard this season for the Buccaneers as the duo hardly left the court last season, leading the Big South in minutes played at 37.6 and 37.5 minutes per game respectfully. The senior duo also return as the team’s leading scorers as Fowler averaged 10.6 points per game, while Bratcher was close behind at 10.4 points per game. Fowler leads the Buccaneers offense in averaging 3.9 assists per game on the season, while Bratcher provided the outside threat for the Bucs, leading the team and sitting among the conference leaders with 2.8 threepointers per game. The duo also averaged 8.2 rebounds per game to lead the Charleston Southern team last season.

Kirkpatrick and redshirt freshman Alyssa Mann also return this season after both missed the entirety of last season due to injury. Kirkpatrick has seen action in 47 career games and is known for ability to shoot from the outside, while Mann is a 5-7 combo guard who has demonstrated the ability to play the point and will look to

back up Fowler on the offensive end. Newcomers Nayla Long and Marley Brown will also be in the mix for playing time this season as the freshmen duo will compete to see the court in their first collegiate season. Long, a 5-8 combo guard/forward from Mililani, Hawaii, was a two-time team captain with the Mililani Trojans and led her team to an undefeated regular season and fifth place finish in the state tournament in averaging 12 points and eight rebounds per game. Brown was a First Team All-District and All-Region selection, earning Offensive Player of the Year honors for the Katy Tigers in Katy, Texas, in her senior season. Forwards Dotson returns to her role working on both the perimeter and post this season after seeing playing time in 27 games, earning 16 starts for the Buccaneers as a junior. She averaged 5.1 points per game, and displayed a knack of hitting big shots from behind the arc with 23 threepointers last season, to go with 3.5 rebounds per game. She has flashed a growing skill set this fall in practice, and continues to showcase her versatility and will be expected to help lead the Bucs this season in the scoring column.

Freshmen

both transferred into Charleston Southern this season, coming to the Buccaneers after transferring in from Iowa Western Community College. Karlsone averaged eight points and six rebounds a game last season in a strong sophomore campaign, while Lebedeva was the most efficient player in the field for the Reivers, knocking down almost 50 percent of her shots from the floor.

Redshirt sophomore Christal Barnett will see her first action on the Charleston Southern sidelines this year after transferring to the Bucs from Colorado Mesa University last season. Barnett, a 5-11 forward, saw action in four games with the Mavericks after a stand-out playing career at Charlotte Christian High School where she was a three-time All-Conference selection.

Freshmen Tatum Jarvis and Brianna Lakes will also be in the battle for playing time this season in the post for the Buccaneers. Jarvis comes to the Buccaneers from Mt. Tabor High School where she was an All-Conference CPC and 2012 Carolina Invitational All-Conference team after finishing her senior season with 14.3 points and 5.9 rebounds, while shooting 49 percent from the floor and 41 percent from behind the arc. She will be joined by freshman Lakes, who lined up at forward in Woodstock, Ga., where she averaged 12 points and five rebounds per game for the Wolverines.

Junior forwards Alise Karlsone and Natasha Lebedeva

Centers Maximilien returns to the court for the Buccaneers after averaging 13.2 minutes per game in the post, connecting on 45.9 percent of her shot attempts from the floor in her freshman season. The 6-3 sophomore finished second on the team with nine blocked shots overall on the season and added a career-high 10 rebounds against High Point last season, showing signs of toughness down low for the Bucs on the defensive side of the court.

Sophomores

She will be joined this season by freshman center Rochelle Brophy who looks to battle for playing time this year after coming to the Bucs by way of Greenville, S.C., and J.L. Mann High School. A strong rebounder, she averaged 10 points and six rebounds per game for the Patriots and will look to continue her strong play in her first season at CSU.

Big South Announces Preseason Women’s Basketball Awards

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Liberty University has been chosen as the 2013-14 favorite in the Big South Conference’s annual preseason Women’s Basketball poll in a vote of the League’s Head Coaches and media panel. The announcement was made today at the Sheraton Convention Center Hotel in Myrtle Beach, S.C., as part of the 2013-14 Basketball Tip-Off Media Luncheon.

For the second consecutive year, Winthrop University senior guard Dequesha McClanahan (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) has been voted the 2013-14 Big South Conference Women’s Basketball Preseason Player of the Year by the League’s Head Coaches and media panel. McClanahan is the first women’s player to be named Preseason Player of the Year in consecutive seasons since Liberty’s Megan Frazee (three times from 2006-08). McClanahan is the reigning two-time Big South Player of the Year and was the League’s Freshman of the Year in 2010-11. She is looking to become the first player with three consecutive Player of the Year awards since Liberty’s Katie Feenstra from 2003-05. McClanahan led the League in scoring for the second-straight year in 2012-13 with 19.8 points per game and was also tops in assist with 5.8 -- becoming the first player in Big South history to lead the Conference in both categories two consecutive seasons. Against League foes she dropped in 22.2 points per contests and had 17 overall 20-point games last year. McClanahan was third in the Big South in overall free throw percentage (82.3), was ninth in steals with 2.3 per night, had four games with at least 10 assists and tallied five double-doubles. McClanahan received 22 first-place votes and 120 total points in the voting to earn a spot on the preseason All-Conference team. For the 16th time in the last 17 seasons, Liberty is the preseason favorite, as the Lady Flames received 13 of the 25 first-place votes and 261 out of a possible 275 points. Liberty welcomes back two starters and nine letterwinners from last year’s Big South championship and NCAA Tournament squad. Winthrop was voted second with 256 points and 11 first-place votes -- the Lady Eagles’ highest standing in the preseason poll since predicted second in 2008-09. Campbell was picked third with 206 points, while High Point was voted fourth with 178 points. Gardner-Webb collected the remaining first-place vote and finished fifth in the poll with 144 points. Longwood, last year’s Tournament Runner-Up, was predicted to finish sixth (133 points), while Presbyterian College claimed the seventh spot in the poll with 129 points. Radford was eighth in the preseason ranking (118 points), followed by Coastal Carolina (ninth, 91 points), Charleston Southern (10th, 79 points) and UNC Asheville (11th, 55 points). Big South women’s basketball tips off Friday, Nov. 8 with three contests. The first Conference date for the women is Monday, Dec. 2, and the season will culminate with the 2014 VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Basketball Championships the week of March 4-9 at The HTC Center on the campus of Coastal Carolina University. The combined, one-site format features all 23 men’s and women’s teams and 21 games in six days, including the crowning of champions on Sunday, March 9.

Embarking on its 30th year in 2013-14, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by notable accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing against some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 17 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new heights. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during his tenure, as he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball and women’s lacrosse for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South

developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and oversaw the additions of men’s and women’s indoor track & field in 1997 and women’s lacrosse in 2013. At the same time, Kallander has solidified Conference membership, as an all-time high 12 member institutions comprise the 30-year old League. Recent additions include High Point, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian College and Longwood, plus the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live video streaming event in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 900 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. Since 2000, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had an individual National Champion six times, has had more than 300 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in football, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship seven times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the first women’s golf program advance to the national finals, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team five consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, has received two at-large playoff berths in the Football Championship Subdivision since 2006, has had six NFL Draft picks, and has had two institutions finish in the top 10 in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships -- including the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event (fifth in 2007). In 2006-07, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed four times -- including a national seed for the first time in 2010, while the Chanticleers’ FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-

year of the Big South’s football existence. The 2009-10 season saw Liberty’s Sam Chelanga win two NCAA National Championships (cross country, 10,000-meter run); Coastal Carolina’s baseball team reach the Super Regionals for the second time in three years as well as being ranked No. 1 in the national RPI and as high as No. 3 in the national polls; and three women’s basketball teams reach the postseason for the first time in Conference history. In 2010-11, Chelanga won two more NCAA National Championships (cross country, outdoor 5,000-meter run), the Big South had its first automatic bid recipient in football (Coastal Carolina), UNC Asheville reached the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, Coastal Carolina’s women’s golf team was the first in Conference history to advance to the NCAA Championship out of Regional play, and a League-record 18 baseball players were drafted in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft. In 2011-12, the Big South had a record five individuals selected for the NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals -- the most of any Division I conference, as well as a record 42 All-Americans. This past season, the Big South had 32 student-athletes earn All-America distinction, while another 12 were named Academic All-Americans. The Conference also had two football playoff teams – and two playoff wins -for the first time, had a women’s basketball team win a postseason game for the first time since 2005, had a League-record four men’s basketball teams selected for postseason play, had two men’s soccer teams reach the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season, and had two men’s and women’s golf programs selected for NCAA Regional play. Several former Big South student-athletes have also reached national prominence in recent years. Coastal Carolina’s Amber Campbell made the U.S. Olympic Team in 2008 and 2012, and was one of five former

Big South athletes to compete in the 2008 Games; High Point’s Tamas Kovacs qualified for the 2012 London Games; VMI’s Reggie Williams reached the NBA with the Golden State Warriors in 2010, UNC Asheville’s Ty Wigginton was named an American League All-Star in 2010, and Coastal Carolina’s Dustin Johnson has won seven PGA Tour events since departing the Big South Conference in 2007. Three former Big South baseball players made their major league debuts in 2012, while Avery Warley became the third Big South women’s basketball player to play in the WNBA two years ago. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 19962007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. For the past four years, nearly 50 percent of Conference’s student-athletes were named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average for the academic year, and the League has had more than 110 Academic All-Americans in its history. Furthermore, the Big South has recorded double figure totals in NCAA Public Recognition Awards for APR progress the last four years. As part of this year’s 30th anniversary celebration, the League will recognize All-Decade Teams for each sport spanning the Conference’s first three decades of existence.
