Head Coach - Jeff Aumend Third Season at CSU (Defiance, ’83)

Jeff Aumend begins his third season at Charleston Southern University, after joining the Buccaneers from his post at Montana State-Billings, where he led the Yellowjackets to a 36-14 record and an NCAA Tournament appearance in his final season. Despite a 15-44 mark last season, Aumend recognized improvement. The Lady Bucs lost a heartbreaking 3-1 game to regular season champ Radford, at the Big South Tourney. But, the improving squad bounced back to defeat Birmingham Southern, 2-1. In the next game, CSU had runners in scoring position in the seventh inning before falling vs. Radford, losing a hard-fought 5-2 elimination game. Keying the team’s upswing were the likes of junior Jill Shondel, who closed the season strong and was selected to the Big South All-Tournament Team, sophomore Amy Trenkamp, who was selected to the Big South’s All-Conference Second Team, and freshman Megan Hall, who finished the season second in batting average in her first year in blue and gold. In his first season with the Lady Bucs, Aumend’s squad featured four players named to the All-Conference teams, with Jill Shondel earning first-team honors, while Dorothy Page and Ashley Jill (A.J.) Robinson captured second-team honors. Katie McKay was named to the all-academic team. In his final year at MSUB, his squad eliminated the nation’s second-ranked and 10th-ranked teams in the always-tough NCAA Division II West regional (MSUB knocked out Humboldt State, which had a phenomenal record of 60-5 entering the loser-out NCAA Regional contest vs. the Yellowjackets). He was hired to start Montana’s only 4-year college softball program beginning in 2000-2001. Aumend is no stranger to college softball in the Southeast. Prior to coaching in Montana, he served for seven seasons as the head coach at Queens College in Charlotte (now Queens University of Charlotte), also starting that program from scratch in 1993-1994. Aumend posted a 155-132 record at Queens, including a 32-13 mark in his fourth season. While at Queens, Aumend coached the Royals to spring season wins over NCAA Division I Liberty, NCAA Division II national tourney finalist Barry University and CVAC opponent/Division II national tournament finalist Coker College, to mention a few. The Royals also shocked UNCC, Winthrop and the University of North Carolina during fall competition. “I had a great time in Montana and enjoyed my exposure to softball on the west coast,” noted Aumend, whose team finished in the final 24 in the national tourney before being knocked out. “Our goals are simple. Work hard, have fun and do it with a balanced lifestyle. We plan to win and winning starts with prepared, committed student-athletes. We want students who are committed to winning academically, athletically, socially and spiritually in their life.” Aumend’s expertise is, without question, as a hitting instructor. His 2005 squad finished 17th, nationally, with a .324 team batting average. Belting 52 homeruns in 50 games, they were ranked 9th, nationally, and also ranked 12th in slugging percentage and 27th in winning percentage. His 1998 Queens College squad finished fourth nationally in hitting with a remarkable .372 average. Aumend takes great pride in his pitchers as well. In 2006, Aumend guided his ace pitcher, Joey Ehnes, to an NCAA tournament and an opportunity to play professionally in Holland after her season. “I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to play with my wonderful teammates and have such a great coach,” said Ehnes, who ranked nationally in strikeouts and victories. “Coach Aumend is really the one who made this happen.” While at Montana State-Billings, the upstart program improved in the win column, each year: from two (2001); to nine (2002); to 15 (2003); to 27 (2004) and, finally, to 36 wins in 2005. He hopes to make the same strides at Charleston Southern University. “We can win here, and we will win,” said Aumend. “We have a good nucleus. I’m anxious to see this program establish itself as a winner, on an annual basis.” Aumend received his Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Arts from Defiance College (Ohio). Aumend currently serves on the NCAA Division I “Top 25” Poll Committee, ranking teams nationally, each week. He is also a recent National Chairperson for Education/Publications for the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Aumend, a native of Alliance, Ohio, began working in college athletics in 1989 as Queens College’s first Sports Information Director and, later, its first softball coach. He earned his 200th win in 2004. Ironically, as a respected hitting coach, his first game as a coach was won on a pinch-hit, three-run home run by a sophomore reserve third baseman!

Assistant Coach - Staci Ramsey First Season at CSU (Alabama, ’06)

Staci Ramsey joins the CSU softball coaching staff for the 2008 season. Ramsey surely will be an extremely valuable influence on the Lady Bucs, as at Alabama Ramsey had one of the most prolific offensive careers in Crimson Tide history. Though her name can be found throughout the Crimson Tide record books, Ramsey particularly excelled in the power categories at Alabama. Through the 2007 season, Ramsey ranks fourth all-time in career doubles (47), home runs (32) and total bases (378) and ranks third all-time in career runs batted in with 175. Staci also was a lineup regular throughout her four-year career at Alabama, so much so that she ranks fourth in career at bats and fifth in games played for the Crimson Tide. Staci also competed on three College World Series (Final 8) teams during her four years at UA while primarily playing third base (and also some catcher) for head coach Patrick Murphy. In her senior season in 2006, Alabama won its first ever SEC softball championship and started 15-0 in conference play. Ramsey was a first team All-South Region selection for her efforts in this season. Staci also brings coaching experience to CSU, as she served as a Crimson Tide student assistant last season while completing her degree in Exercise Science. “Staci comes from one of the elite programs in the country,” noted CSU head coach Jeff Aumend. “She brings a passion for the game and a desire to win. She will be a big asset to our program.” Ramsey will work with infielders and catchers while also assisting with hitting, team offense, recruiting and daily operations.

Assistant Coach - A.J. Robinson Second Season as Coach (CSU, ’07)

A.J. Robinson has completed her playing days as a Lady Buc and joined the CSU softball staff as a student assistant coach. Robinson had a stellar career as a four-year starter in the outfield at CSU. In her senior season she led the team in hitting with a .337 batting average, hitting in both the leadoff and the two spots. Anchoring the defense in centerfield, she was a preseason all-conference selection and was later named to the second team All-Big South squad. Robinson was a counted-on-player throughout her four year career, as she appeared in 224 games for the Lady Bucs and started 220. This allowed Robinson to set a new program record for at bats in a career (653) and to tie the program record for hits in a career with 188. A.J. is responsible for outfielders, running slappers and day-to-day operations of the program. “I have coached several players during my college coaching career. Very few match A.J. in work ethic, desire to succeed and willingness to learn,” stated head coach Jeff Aumend. “Her passion for the game and great ability to teach what she has learned are big assets to our program.” Robinson is from Kershaw, S.C., where she holds several softball records and was named all-state and team MVP for Andrew Jackson High School. A three-sport athlete, she played softball, basketball and volleyball.

2008 Charleston Southern Lady Bucs Softball - Find a Way 2008 Season Outlook

Jeff Aumend has proven to be quite the builder of programs over the course of his softball coaching career. And, in the 2008 Charleston Southern Lady Buccaneers, Aumend sees a lot of promise for a squad that could go a long way toward building the CSU softball program into a perennial winner. The reasons for this promise are manifold, but the greatest source of optimism lies with the impressive level of experience that Aumend’s players will bring to the field this season. Thirteen of CSU’s 20 players are upperclassmen, including no fewer than eight seniors. “With eight seniors, this is a team that is ready to turn the corner...(they) want to be the group that returns this program back to winning ways,” said Aumend. Such a return to winning ways may already be underway, as Aumend sees much promise for 2008 in the team’s strong end to 2007. In CSU’s final four games last season, the Lady Bucs were able to record a 12-7 win over Lowcountry rival College of Charleston and a 2-1 victory over Birmingham Southern in the Big South Conference tournament. The Bucs then proceeded to come up just short in a hard-fought, evenly played game against Big South regular season champion Radford in the tournament. “We definitely saw improvement in the second half last season as we were putting pressure on teams, late in games,” said Aumend. The 2008 squad will hope to similarly pressure its opposition. If it does, one of the key reasons will likely be senior lead-off hitter Jill Shondel, one of the most prolific offensive players in CSU softball history. Aumend not surprisingly is full of praise for his senior starlet. “Every coach would like to have several Jill Shondel’s,” commented Aumend. “She throws, fields, runs, hits and hits for power…She is also fully recovered from last year’s foot surgery.” In addition to the return of a healthy Shondel, the CSU offense will be comprised of a deep and talented

core of hitters that will feature talents both established and promising, experienced and young. Leading the veteran returnees will be junior Amy Trenkamp, a Second-Team All-Conference selection last season, sophomore first baseman Megan Hall, who hit over .300 for most of her freshman season before being slowed by a hamstring pull, and the center Jill Shondel field duo of senior Jenn Pardue and junior Brittany Giannini, a duo that will rotate this season and whom both have impressed Aumend with their daily improvements. Fellow veterans Jennifer Brooks, a four-year starter, and red-shirt sophomore DH Lisa Rice, whom Aumend labels as one of the best Lady Buc hitters when healthy, will further compliment the Buc offense. Among the new talents slated to contribute this season are senior shortstop Tatjana Slawson, a former Dorchester High standout who competed for three years at Division II power Francis Marion, as well as junior third baseman Gail Matsushima, a transfer from the University of Hawaii who started often for the Rainbow Warriors, who were nationally ranked in 2007. In addition, Aumend welcomes the addition of two of North Carolina’s most talented high school catchers, freshmen Erin Kegley (who, according to Aumend, has blossomed as a hitter) and Brittany York (CSU’s rifle-armed catcher, Aumend notes), who will compete for time as hitters and utility players. While Aumend hopes strong production from all these players will take some pressure off his pitching staff, he is also quite comfortable with the group of pitchers he will be able to count on in 2008. Taking the mound for CSU this season will be sophomore

Caitlin Allen, a returning starter and a “proven commodity” on the staff, along with senior Whitney James, who had a very strong fall. Joining these two on the staff will be Shondel, who pitched often as a sophomore, and UNC Charlotte transfer Jamie Wellons, whom Aumend believes has great potential when she “trusts her stuff” as a pitcher. Aumend had worries about his staff entering the year due to the loss of career strikeout leader Amanda Noble and talented starter Jillian LaFrance off last year’s staff. Those worries have largely been alleviated, however, thanks to James and Shondel recovering from their respective injuries and the performance of his staff in the fall as well as in early spring practices. “My pitchers know that I was concerned, entering the fall,” said Aumend. “But, they wiped out my concerns with their development. We are actually deeper than we were a year ago, and more diverse.” Aumend does admit that his pitchers will need a strong defense behind them, as few pitchers on the staff are heavily reliant on strikeouts. Yet, this is not a huge concern for the Lady Bucs, as Aumend believes the left side of the infield will be “smothered” by the combination of newcomers Matsushima and Slawson. The defensive prowess of infielders Hall and Brooks, as well as CSU’s outfield, should also Gail Matsushima go a long way toward limiting runs scored by the Lady Bucs’ opposition this season. Charleston Southern will face a daunting schedule in 2008 that will include tournaments at Charlotte, UNCWilmington and Mississippi State. Yet, given the team’s strength in both talent and numbers in all areas of the game, the Lady Bucs believe they are well equipped to make this season the start of something special for softball at CSU.
