NEW OPPORTUNITIES Colorado State University announced one of the largest collegiate athletic venue naming agreements in history in April 2018, a $37.7 million partnership with Public Service Credit Union, which was in the process of completing a re-branding initiative to Canvas Credit Union. The credit union’s name change and the name Canvas Stadium were introduced in June 2018. The agreement, which when added to the $20 million given in 2016 to name Sonny Lubick Field, brought the total naming rights revenues at Colorado State to $57 million for the stadium. This is comparable to the $69 million United Airlines Memorial Coliseum at University of Southern California and the $41 million Alaska Airlines Field at Husky Stadium at the University of Washington. The Colorado State agreement with Canvas Credit Union is for 15 years and includes annual escalator clauses for inflation, as well as a signing bonus, in recognition of the visibility and success of the new on-campus stadium, which opened in August 2017 and set numerous records during its first year of operation.

Learfield’s Rams Sports Properties and their Campus+ business brokered the agreement as part of its ongoing support for Colorado State University Athletics.

The playing field continues to be named for the Rams’ legendary head coach Sonny Lubick, who also happens to serve as Vice President of Community Outreach for Canvas Credit Union.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH During the past year, the community outreach program has embedded CSU Athletics in a direct and purposeful way into thousands of lives in Northern Colorado and the Denver metro area. With an aim of broadening the reach of Rams Athletics, our actions have added to the student-athlete experience at CSU. Hundreds of student-athletes have been involved, and thousands in our community have been introduced to Rams Athletics. Some of these opportunities include middle school visit days with first generation panels, Reading with the Rams, Ram Jam, Special Olympics Unified Games and more!

In all my years of coaching, I don’t know if I’ve had an athlete as composed and disciplined as he is, and I’ve had some great ones that I don’t want to discount. Mostafa’s a special person. He’s a dominant performer, but more than that, he represents everything that you look for in a student-athlete. He’s serious about his academics, respected his teammates and bought into what we’re trying to do at CSU. He was a leader, and the ultimate student-athlete for us.

MOUNTAIN WEST CHAMPIONS The Colorado State Rams claimed two Mountain West championships in 2017-18, in men’s cross country and volleyball. Tom Hilbert’s volleyball program made its schoolrecord 23rd consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament and claimed its 19th overall MW championship, with Hilbert earning MW Coach of the Year honors. The Rams defeated Michigan in the first round of the tournament before falling to a Stanford team—on its home floor—that advanced all the way to the Final Four. Hilbert added to his career record (538126) as the winningest Division I collegiate head coach in any sport in the state of Colorado. The men’s cross-country program, under Mountain West Coach of the Year Art Siemers, recorded its best finish at the NCAA Championships since 1978, placing 9th in what was its fourth trip to the national championships as a team in the last five years. Jerrell Mock was MW champion for the second year in a row and Cole Rockhold earned All-America honors. The ninth-place finish was the Rams’ thirdbest in program history, and is just the 10th national Top 10 finish by a Colorado State team in any sport.

R E P O R T

Individually, 10 Rams earned 13 MW championships, led by the men’s and women’s track and field programs, which claimed 10 individual championships.

A N N U A L

Overall, six of 16 CSU Athletics programs finished in the top two in the MW—two champions and four secondplace finishes (men’s golf, women’s indoor track & field, men’s indoor track & field and men’s outdoor track & field). Half of the Rams programs—8 of 16—finished in the top 3 of the MW standings.

In 2017-18 the Rams were represented in the postseason, whether as a team or by individuals, in 11 sports: NCAA Championships (8): Volleyball, men’s cross country, men’s indoor and outdoor track & field, women’s indoor and outdoor track & field, men’s golf and women’s golf. Bowl Game (1): Football. National Tournament (1): Women’s basketball. National 27Invitation Invitational Softball Championship (1): Softball.

Art Siemers earned MW men’s cross country Coach of the Year honors by leading the Rams to their best finish at the NCAA Championships since 1978, placing 9th in what was their fourth trip to the national championships as a team in the last five years. Siemers’ top runner Jerrell Mock was MW champion for the second year in a row and Cole Rockhold earned All-America honors. The Rams reached a national ranking of No. 8 during the season, and the ninth-place finish was the Rams’ third-best in program history, while also standing as just the 10th national Top 10 finish by a Colorado State team in any sport in the school’s history.

Tom Hilbert guided his CSU volleyball program to its school-record 23rd consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament (22nd under his leadership) and claimed the Rams’ 19th overall MW championship. It was Hilbert’s 10th MW Coach of the Year honor earned in the 19year history of the league. The 2017 CSU Rams went 29-4 under Hilbert’s guidance— including a 17-1 mark in MW play—and defeated Michigan in the first round of the NCAA tournament before falling to a Stanford team—on its home floor—that advanced all the way to the Final Four.

In earning his first league honor, Christian Newton led CSU to its final regular-season ranking of No. 40 according to Golfweek and No. 43 according to Golfstat, as well as back-to-back runner-up finishes in the Mountain West Championship, the top back-to-back combined placings in program history. The program also made its first NCAA Regionals appearance as a team since 2012 under his leadership, finishing seventh.

CSU had four student-athletes earn Mountain West Athlete of the Year or Player of the Year distinction in 2017-18: Mostafa Hassan (men’s track and field), Jerrell Mock (men’s cross country), Katie Oleksak (volleyball) and Haley Rowley (women’s swimming & diving).

A N N U A L

R E P O R T

Hassan won the MW shot put title in both the indoor and outdoor seasons and won the indoor national title for the second consecutive season. Mock won his second consecutive MW individual cross-country title and placed ninth at the NCAA championships. Oleksak was again the cornerstone of the Rams’ offense, leading the league in assists while guiding one of the nation’s most efficient offenses. Rowley won three events at the 2018 MW Championships and set several school records along the way.
