Welcome to the College of the Arts fall 2023 performing and visual arts season. I am so proud of the collaborative efforts our faculty, staff, and students have undertaken to produce such a wide array of programming across four disciplines. It takes months, sometimes years, of work to create what you are about to enjoy – a commitment matched only by our collective passion for the arts. Each year, the college presents a wide variety of programming that reflects our diverse perspectives. In Theatre, the season begins with a stage adaptation of the hauntingly emotional novel and film “Let the Right One In,” which reveals both the darkest impulses of humanity and our universal desire for connection. Acclaimed 1975 hit musical “A Chorus Line” gets a fresh update by Marty Austin Lamar and Courtney Ozovek that will immerse audiences in the audition process of a Broadway show. In the School of Music, the Fullerton Jazz Orchestra and University Symphony Orchestra perform together in the first ever “Fullerton Pops!” Also in November, Begovich Gallery explores the midcentury architecture and aesthetics of our original Visual Arts Complex in the exhibition “PAST FORWARD.” While Begovich Gallery looks back at our historical beginnings, we continue to push toward the future as the Visual Arts Modernization Project (VA MOD) rapidly transforms the campus. Our complex’s two new buildings are fully framed, architectural details have been installed, and extensive interior renovations on two existing buildings are nearing completion. These changes bring years of dreaming and planning into sharp focus, but there is so much work yet to be done. From exterior paint to integrate our past and present buildings, to restoring the beloved “Water Wall” sculpture, to new software that will power the next generation of digital artists, there are many ways you can make a difference. The ways in which our students will benefit from the modernization project are as limitless as their imaginations, and as assured as our commitment to their success. In the College of the Arts, we measure student achievement in creativity, artistic integrity, and dedication, not in data points or statistics. ABOUT THE ARTIST
Denis Jiron
Denis Jiron is a native of Los Angeles, California and enjoys a varied career that includes performing with symphony orchestras, pop acts, Afro-Cuban/salsa artists, TV shows, big bands, and education. He was appointed acting-2nd trombone of the Los Angeles Philharmonic from 2017-2018. He has also held positions with the Riverside Philharmonic (Principal Trombone) and the Hofer Symfoniker (2nd/1st Trombone) and has been guest trombonist with the LA Opera, Sapporo Symphony, Philharmonie Luxembourg, Pacific Symphony, and Detroit Symphony orchestras. He is currently principal trombone of the Jackson Symphony and Midland Symphony orchestras. Jiron has appeared with many artists and shows, including: Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Queen Latifah, Kanye West, Andrea Bocelli, Sting, Gladys Night, Chris Botti, The Voice, American Idol, The Ellen Show, The Tonight Show, American Music Awards, Amanda Miguel, Diego Verdaguer, The Midnighters, Budman/Levy Jazz Orchestra, Al McKay-Earth Wind and Fire Experience, Tito Nieves, Eddie Santiago, Jimmy Bosch and many others. In 2004 he founded and directed the Afro-Cuban orchestra, Rumbankete, which released its first album in 2011. Jiron has held adjunct trombone professor positions at California State University, Los Angeles and California State University, San Bernardino. He earned his BM degree from California State University, Northridge and his MFA degree from California Institute of the Arts, as well as studying at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik Trossingen and later the Hochschule für Musik und Datsellende Kunst Mannheim. He earned his DMA degree from Michigan State University as a University Distinguished Fellow. Currently, he serves as Assistant Professor of Trombone at the Don Wright Faculty of Music at Western University in London, Canada. Jiron is a Conn-Selmer (Vincent Bach) Performing Artists.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Yoko Mizuno, piano Born in Tokyo, Japan, Yoko Mizuno moved to the U.S. after earning her Bachelors of Arts in Piano Performance from Musashino Academia Musicae. While attending the North Carolina School of the Arts, she worked as a staff accompanist and took a great interest in collaborative works, which lead her to an MFA in Collaborative Keyboard from the California Institute of the Arts. Accompanying various artists/musicians has opened her mind to unlimited possibilities. As an instructor, Ms. Mizuno uses open-minded concepts and guides students by keeping to their own taste and style. Currently, she is a piano accompanist at College of the Canyons, UCLA, and First Baptist Church in Temple City. She also enjoys teaching various levels of students at various locations. Her students have the option of participating in the MTAC Certificate of Merit Evaluations. M.F.A. in Collaborative Keyboard from California Institute of the Arts; B.A. in Piano Performance, Musashino Academia Musicae; Born in Tokyo, Japan; Worked as a staff accompanist while attending the North Carolina School of the Arts; Current piano accompanist at College of the Canyons, UCLA, and First Baptist Church in Temple City. Yoko enjoys teaching various levels of students, is a freelance accompanist, and has been a ballet accompanist for the Trudl Zipper Dance Institute at The Colburn School since September 2011.
