WELCOME

Welcome to the 2017-18 Cricket Victoria State Championships. Over the next two months, the Cricket Victoria State Championships will be staged across the state at under-14, under-16 and under-18 levels, culminating in six highly anticipated finals. Having been established as a key component of the talent identification system for men and women, the Cricket Victoria State Championships continues to be recognised as the state’s leading talent pathway. I wish to acknowledge and thank the Premier Cricket clubs, affiliates and their representatives from across Victoria, whose tireless work to support the programs in the regions are crucial to the talent recruitment process. Finally, I’d like to congratulate each and every one of this year’s representatives who are contesting the Cricket Victoria State Championships and wish you the best of luck in your pursuit of success.

THE BEGINNING THE JOURNEY THE DESTINATION Congratulations on your selection! Playing in the state championships is a great opportunity for you to challenge yourself against the best young cricketers from around the state. It is important that you enjoy the competition and make a positive contribution to your team on and off the field. “The Beginning – The Journey – The Destination” is a phrase that will be repeated many times throughout your career as you discuss your game with coaches, players and family members. For cricketers young and old, the “destination” tends to overwhelm their thinking and this is linked to the dream of representing your state and country. We are all aspirational players and have dreamt of playing international cricket but it is important to focus on the “journey”. This is to be experienced, day in day out, week in week out, month on month, year on year and it is the enjoyment of the game that will be the driving force. The journey throughout this competition will present you with some strong performances and some that may not have been to the standard you were expecting of yourself. Importantly, you are looking at each match and assessing yourself against the variables that are present and then moving on from that performance and preparing for the next. Each day will present another opportunity and it is up to you and those around you in your team to discuss the game each day and what you have learnt from the journey. For some the destination will be the thrill of being involved in the competition week, for teams it will be progressing to the finals and for others strong performances may result in an invitation to state youth trials. Regardless of the destination, enjoy the journey you are on this week and all the best for the championships.

A I G R O E G HAM E R A W 5

JUGGLING HIGH-SCHOOL VCE EXAMS AND BEING A SEMI-PROFESSIONAL CRICKETER ISN’T EASY, JUST ASK GEORGIA WAREHAM.

Wareham can’t wait to be back in red and is hoping to play a role in the Renegades’ push towards WBBL|03 finals.

The 18-year-old has just completed her VCE exams and is looking forward to being back in Renegades colours for the third consecutive year.

“I’m looking forward to being back in Red, it’s going to be a really good season and I can’t wait,” Wareham said.

The talented all-rounder played all 14 games for the Melbourne Renegades last season, as a middle order batter and Wareham is pleased the weight of exams is off her shoulders. “I’m really excited they’re done, I can put them behind me now and focus on my cricket which is handy. Once you finish you’re just happy they’re over, I’ll see how I go in a few weeks when I get the marks back.” Wareham said. Not only was the importance of exams a task for the Mortlake College student, but having to train in the lead up to the Vic Spirit’s opening games in Sydney in October provided an additional obstacle.

“We have a new coach, new skipper and a really well balanced squad so I think it’s going to go really well. In the end it’s all about winning games and I’m happy to play my role with bat, ball and in the field. “We’ve got a well-rounded team and some really strong internationals, so I think we’re really pushing towards finals, as we’ve had the experience as a younger group with a few games under our belts, so I think we’re ready to push towards the end of the season.”

“It was a bit tricky. I was doing some training at home and satellite coaching with my regional coach in the country,” she said. “Hempy (David Hemp) was really good about it and I just kept on top of my stuff and got down to Melbourne when I could.”

A TERRIBLE CRICKET INNINGS, BUT A ROAD TOLL WE SHOULD AIM FOR. Last year, 291 people lost their lives on Victorian roads. Thousands more suffered serious, often life changing injuries. Together with Cricket Victoria and the broader Victorian community, the TAC is working towards our long term goal to achieve zero road deaths and serious injuries. This vision is called Towards Zero.

A N A L A G N I K

FOR 22 YEAR-OLD LEG-SPINNER ALANA KING, THE 2016/17 SEASON WAS AN EARLY MILESTONE IN A CAREER ALREADY BOOSTED BY SEVERAL HIGHLIGHTS. A member of the Melbourne Stars’ inaugural Rebel WBBL squad, last season King played 11 matches for the Stars, proving an ideal launching pad moving into WBBL03 where King is looking forward to adding extra games and wickets this season. The journey to the Stars has been an education in managing excitement and disappointment for King, with an initial rookie contract in the VicSpirit program followed by the disappointment of losing her spot on the list. While losing the contract was a confronting experience, for King it also highlighted the need to have a career and study plan to complement the drive to return to the VicSpirit program. The effort and investment into herself and her game saw the Prahran cricket club player offered a full contract for the 2016/17 season.

12

Following a solid pre-season, King made her VicSpirit debut in the WNCL against the ACT Meteors. She went on to take 9 wickets for the season and earned a place on the Shooting Stars overseas tour of Sri Lanka with other rising young stars. The excitement of both a WNCL and WBBL season also allows King to play alongside fellow leg-spinner Kristen Beams and these match opportunities will continue to fast-track King’s development. As cricket continues to move to becoming full-time professional sport, the introduction of career and welfare managers to state programs ensures the balance between becoming a cricketer and being planned for life after sport is an ongoing conversation. To ensure King has the balance right she is currently studying Exercise Science at Australian Catholic University. In addition to her studies she is also a proud ambassador of Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision, raising awareness for young people suffering Bone Marrow Failure Syndrome.

YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP

PACE BOWLER WELFARE

PACE BOWLERS TO BE LIMITED TO

• U13

Four overs maximum each spell* & Eight overs maximum per match. Target 100-120 balls per week (match & training)

• U15

Allow 4-6 weeks gradual bowling preparation prior to the season. Five overs maximum each spell* & twelve overs maximum per match. Target 100-120 balls per week (match & training)

Over the past year our understanding of how workload may contribute to bone stress injury in young fast bowlers has advanced significantly. As a result the existing youth fast bowling guidelines have been refined. Consultation with State/Territory medical and fitness staff, as well as pace bowling coaches, has provided a clear Australian Cricket position. Below is a summary of the rationale to change and the changes themselves.

• U17

Allow 6-8 weeks gradual bowling preparation prior to the season. Six overs maximum each spell* & 16 overs maximum per match. Target 120-150 balls per week (match & training)

• U19

Allow 8-10 weeks gradual bowling preparation prior to the season. Seven overs maximum each spell* & 20 overs maximum per match. Target 150-180 balls per week (match & training) *rest between spells should be the same number of overs from the same end as the completed spell

MANAGEMENT APPROACH • Lumbar (low back) stress fracture is the most debilitating fast bowler injury and results in the most time missed due to any injury in young fast bowlers • Adolescence provides a “window of opportunity” to improve bone strength with consistent bowling through this period when bone is thought to be responsive to well-planned loading. This has potential to develop a stronger thicker lumbar vertebrae that are better capable of withstanding the loads of fast bowling • Cricket Australia research shows that the frequency of bowling sessions (more sessions per week and less time between sessions) increases the risk of developing a lumbar stress fracture. This appears to be a more prominent risk factor than the number of balls bowled • Sustained bowling over a prolonged period of time (e.g 3 months) without a rest period was is also a risk factor in the development of lumbar stress fracture • The existing guidelines are complex and can result in young bowlers not getting the consistent bowling through a week that they require for their physical and technical development

20

1. AGE

2. WORKLOAD

• Growing bones

3. TECHNIQUE 35º
