By Melissa Wells When I think of the holiday season, it conjures up images of Families sitting around the dinner table, sharing in the warm bonds that define the season. Some of my favorite memories have been made at my Family’s kitchen table. Something about this setting allows everyone to relax and enjoy the company of Family and friends. It opens the lines of communication and encourages the telling of stories and favorite Family memories. It is with that in mind that I asked Chef Bob to prepare recipes for a meal filled with old-fashioned holiday favorites. He has pulled together some classic southern holiday flavors such as roasted turkey with savory cornbread dressing, fried corn, pumpkin cheesecake, and sweet potatoes deluxe. Preparing these delicious recipes will make your table the centerpiece of your Family’s holiday celebration and fill your home with the aroma of warmth and holiday cheer; enjoy!

Cole Park Southern Buffet always offers a variety of Chef Bob’s delicious dishes on the daily buffet as well as the a la carte menu. It is a great place to hold your holiday gathering and celebrate the season of togetherness. Enjoy these delicious recipes with your Family and consider Cole Park Southern Buffet for all of your holiday needs. For more information about Cole Park Southern Buffet and Eagle Catering, please call (270) 798-4610. Be sure to bring your little ones to Cole Park on December 12 for a Breakfast with Santa. You will be treated to a spectacular buffet of Chef Bob’s home-cooked favorites including pancakes, sausage, biscuits and gravy, eggs and much more. There will also be a special visit from Mr. Ho Ho Ho himself. Don’t miss out on your chance to put in a good word with the man in red!

By Stephanie Craig, LMSW New Parent Support Program Home Visitor The holiday season is a time for parents to embrace their playful side as they watch their children open gifts with enthusiasm. However, it is also a time to be mindful of the fact that Christmas can be a dangerous time of the year; especially for children ages birth to three. Christmas trees can fall over if not anchored properly, and children can get tangled up in Christmas lights. It is also important to keep in mind that at this age, everything goes in the mouth. To avoid these dangers, remember these simple recommendations by Beth Callahan: “Tips to Fix Dangerous Christmas Decorations for Your Children,” Associated Content.com, November 2007.

attempt to eat the cords. • Be sure to place electrical outlet covers on the outlets to reduce the risk of electrocution. Along with these general safety tips, I would like to encourage you to consider your child’s stages of development as you choose appropriate gifts for the holidays. From birth to 12 months, it is all about learning to communicate and using the five senses. Think about toys that incorporate sounds and rhythms of language, color, and hand-eye

• Remember to anchor your Christmas tree to avoid having it tip over. You can find these anchors at your local hardware store. • To avoid ornaments being shaken off of the tree, try using fishing line to hang decorations instead of hooks. • Try to use battery operated lights instead of lights that plug into the wall to avoid having children

coordination; mobiles, rattles, chew toys, and pop-up toys are all great options. For ages 12 to 24 months, consider toys that allow your child to utilize their growing independence. Choose toys such as play food, plastic tools, shape sorters, and push/pull toys to stimulate this learning process. Finally, for children ages 24 to 36 months, choose toys and projects that allow them to explore; such as crayons, finger paints, action figures, dolls, stuffed animals, and dress up clothes (www.zerotothree.org). The most important thing that you can provide to your child is free; it’s you. Your attention is crucial to your child’s development. By remembering to implement some of these tips, you and your Family will have a fun as well as safe holiday season. If you have any questions on these or other topics, please contact the New Parent Support Program at 270-956-3850 or visit our website at www.fortcampbellmwr.com.

By Julie Capouch There’s nothing like the aroma of a real Christmas tree to get you in the holiday spirit. For centuries, Americans have used pine, fir, and spruce trees as part of their winter celebrations. However, the number of Americans with real Christmas trees has been declining in the last few decades, with roughly 70 percent of households opting out of a real tree; meaning that many Military Families have never experienced a real Christmas tree in their home. This year, many Fort Campbell families will get their chance. The Trees for Troops program is coming to Fort Campbell and will be providing real Christmas trees to Military Families in need. This will be the third year that Trees for Troops has chosen to come to Fort Campbell, and Soldiers themselves are the reason for the program’s success.

www.fortcampbellmwr.com

“The volunteers are the true heroes” says Tina Tucker, Community Programs Assistant at the Family Resource Center (FRC). “Soldiers devote their personal time to help, and without them, we couldn’t do this.” In 2008, Trees for Troops, in partnership with FedEx, delivered 17,082 donated trees to 53 military bases in 29 states and overseas. This year, Fort Campbell will be receiving 650 trees. In an effort to reach those truly in need, Army Community Service (ACS) gives tickets to Command Teams who distribute them. Soldiers who are

interested in obtaining a ticket should get in touch with their command. This year’s shipment will be dropped off on Thursday, December 3 around 10 a.m. Ticket holders may pick up their trees on Friday, December 4 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Beginning at noon on Saturday, the remaining trees will be given out to anyone holding a DOD ID card. Each tree comes with an information sheet including care instructions and fire safety tips. For more information on the Trees for Troops program at Fort Campbell, contact Tina Tucker at (270) 798-2158 or Tony Gann at (270) 798-4782. For information on the nationwide Trees for Troops program, or to donate, visit the foundation on the web at www.treesfortroops.org.

innamon Rolls, fudge, pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes with loads of gravy…sounds yummy, right? Comfort food is the name given to foods that remind us of a happy time and make us feel warm and safe. The problem is, too much comfort food makes it very uncomfortable to step on the scale, or continue to fit into your favorite jeans. Obesity has become an epidemic in our society that continues to worsen every year, and the holidays seem to be an especially difficult time for everyone to stay on a healthy exercise and eating plan. It is a busy time, typically full of parties, travel, and special events; all things that make up a fun and festive holiday season. These are also occasions that offer many opportunities to consume calories in excess. Consider the stay fit tips that follow as a preemptive strike on your holiday calorie intake. It is easier to avoid temptation if you have a plan. In order to stay fit at any time, it is important to have a healthy ratio of calories burned vs. calories consumed. This is especially important to keep in mind over the holidays. One of the best ways to keep this balance in check is to increase your workouts over the holiday season. Morale, Welfare and Recreation offers a great option for exercise with the newly renovated Estep Wellness Center. Estep re-opened its doors on November 2 after a month-long renovation “to improve the facility for our customers,” according to Denny

www.fortcampbellmwr.com

Crisp, manager at Estep. This renovation includes new paint throughout the facility and new carpet in the entrance area. They have also tiled the “wet areas” to include the restrooms, sauna, and locker rooms. This gives all of those areas a “brighter and cleaner appearance,” says Crisp. Another new addition to this renovation project was the replacement of the carpeted floor in the aerobics room with a cushioned, laminated floor. For any previous patrons of Estep, you will definitely notice the fresh clean smell when you enter the room. Mr. Crisp commented that “Having a laminate floor makes it much more sanitary and easier to keep clean for patrons.” A new outdoor handicap accessible ramp, along with a new dropped ceiling, flooring, and paint in the aerobic bike room, top off a renovation project of over $100,000. All of this helps to improve the quality of the facility for Soldiers and their Families. Estep is also the only facility that has child care available. Childcare is free with membership, but advanced reservations are required. When asked if he had any tips on staying fit throughout the holidays, Mr. Crisp suggested “watch your calorie intake…eat in moderation, and take a 30 minute walk after a big meal instead of taking a nap or watching TV to start burning some of the extra calories.” Estep is also offering several new and exciting aerobics classes to help you get into and stay in shape throughout the holiday season. Check out the complete schedule of classes at www.fortcampbellmwr.com/Recreation/Estep. Estep Wellness Center will be open on Christmas Eve from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m., December 26 from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m., and New Year’s Eve from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. A great place to burn off those extra calories! Some other tips to make it easy to stay fit this holiday season from Shawn Lebrun, CPT are

• Nibble on fruits and vegetables throughout the day – “Eating small snacks/meals throughout the day is more beneficial for your metabolism…plus when it is dinner time, you will not be incredibly hungry.” • Skip the gravy, dressings, and high-calorie condiments – “If the turkey is too dry without some type of sauce, use ketchup or low-fat gravy. Many times the dressings and condiments are worse culprits than the foods you put them on.” • Drink a lot of water throughout the day – “This will help with hunger throughout the day. Water is a great appetite suppressant and if you are constantly sipping all day, you will not find yourself starving.” Starting an exercise routine now, will have you motivated to continue throughout the holidays. If you keep moving, it makes it a little easier to down those extra calories without the guilt and fear that comes with the inevitable New Year’s resolutions. With these ideas in mind, maybe in 2010 your resolution can be to continue on the path to a healthy life instead of starting from scratch. Here’s wishing you a happy and healthy and holiday season!

Make your list and check it twice Have you planned your spending for the holidays this year? If not, you better make that list and check it twice. You should have your budget in place by now, and don’t forget to add everything, including postage, wrapping paper, travel funds, cards, baking supplies, decorations, and as always, the gifts. There are several websites that can help you create a holiday budget. You need to have an accurate picture of your finances before planning your holiday budget. Army Community Service (ACS) Financial Readiness can assist you with creating a budget and setting goals for holiday spending. We all make mistakes with our holiday spending, from overextending ourselves, to forgetting someone,

Tis’ the season to spread joy and good cheer! For the month of December, the MWR Military Family of the Month is a very special and unique Family, that implements their motto of J.O.Y. (Jesus, Others, then Yourself) all year long. From making and delivering homemade goodies and meals to the community, to offering classes to Soldiers and their Families about building wealth and becoming debt free, the Colon-Borowiec Family truly works together to change lives for the better. The Colon-Borowiec Family consists of MSG Anthony Colon, his wife Carole, and their 14 children ranging from the ages of a 5 year old daughter to 25 year old twins. Anthony and Carole are blessed to have 7 of the 14 children still residing with them here on Fort Campbell. MSG Colon serves as the Group CBRN NCO for HHC, 5th SFG (A) and has been stationed here at Fort Campbell with his Family for over two years. While some may consider the size of the Colon-Borowiec Family to be a deterrence, they would strongly disagree. MSG Colon says

to purchasing gifts for ourselves along with our loved ones. The key is to plan in advance and be organized. Getting back to that list, you don’t need to purchase a gift for everyone; be creative! Secret Santa, home baked goods (include the recipe), and donations are wonderful ways to keep the spirit alive. Having a round robin or drawing names out of a hat is another great idea. When it comes to actually purchasing gifts, set a dollar limit and don’t exceed it. Be a smart consumer. Make sure you read the fine print of those department store credit card offers. Is it really on sale once you pay that finance charge? Do you really want to pay off debt the rest

By Keri McPeak that during the times when he is deployed, his “Family rallies around one another to ensure that all of the household chores are completed, and the children do all that they can to limit their Mother’s stress of essentially being a single parent.” Another key factor to the Colon-Borowiec Family’s success is being able to “participate in many activities and trips, without outside help, because we are totally debt free.” They offer a financial program to Soldiers and their Families.

By Tara Goodson of the year for the few short days the holiday season brings us? Now is the perfect time to start shopping around. Plan your shopping trips and have your list in hand and a store in mind. Don’t fall into the trap of the perfect gift jumping out at you; stick to your budget, stick to your list and don’t stress. The longer you wait, the more you will prolong your stress about money and the holidays. Get your shopping done early and enjoy the rest of the holiday season. While everyone else is running around, just sit back and enjoy that nice cup of cocoa with your loved ones instead.

This Christmas 10 of the 14 children will be home to celebrate and have a great time cooking, playing games, and singing Karaoke. This Family embraces the holiday season as it allows them to participate in the Little Soldier Tree and Angel Tree programs, which provide gifts for deserving Families. When the Colon-Borowiec Family is not helping others, they enjoy the “amazing amount of MWR activities that they can participate in.” The Family enjoys “swimming, bowling, golfing, and attending the many concerts held throughout the year.” If you would like to learn more about the financial classes that the Colon-Borowiec Family offers, feel free to call MSG Colon at (270) 881-8635.
