til schools out for the summer. A lot of you, you’re planning your family’s summer vacation. For us, we’re gearing up to get ready for festival season. I can’t wait to be back at Creation festival this year. As Creation Festival has often said, “It may be the best time of your summer – maybe even the best time of your life.” What a blast and what a vacation – camping, cook outs, volleyball, basketball, inflatables, food vendors, crafts, a kids tent and face painting. Then put on top of that all the entertainment for the whole family. It’s such an awesome vacation that’s centered around our faith. What made summer vacation and family vacation even better was sharing it with someone else. No one told me I had to. No one told me it was my responsibility or my duty. I wanted to share the best thing in my life with my friends. I wanted to have a good time with them and to have

nnounced initially to their fans, the celebrated band revealed their final plans earlier this year before their highly successful “The 7 Tour.” Named among the “most thoughtful, progressive and exciting acts in contemporary Christian music” by The New York Times, the popular yet unconventional David Crowder*Band finishes their career with an epic, triumphant collection of 34 songs that poetically illustrate that in death something new is reborn. The album showcases the band’s unique music style and touches on worship, pop, rock, bluegrass and electronic genres. I had the great opportunity to interview David Crowder about the album’s first single, “Let Me Feel You Shine.” Please tell me the background story behind writing the song “Let Me Feel You Shine.” I wrote this song on the tail end of the decision to end our time as a band; it put the period at the end of the sentence. I don’t think I have written as personal of a song as this one. For me, all of the experience of closing this chapter, of looking ahead and trusting, is in this song. I know all of us are in these moments where life twists and turns, and you don’t see what’s coming, but you feel God’s leading and you have to jump out and take the risk and see what it means to be a person of faith. What I love about the whole arc of this thing that has

been David Crowder*Band and coming to a close is that on paper it makes no sense. Looking back on each release, each album has been stronger than the previous one, and culturally speaking it doesn’t make sense. You don’t quit when you’ve got momentum built. And yet, with our faith, it’s an upside down Kingdom. In that way it’s the norm. “The first will be last. The poor are rich. After death is life.” It’s all upside down and because you breathe in culture and strive for success, what you breathe in and out your entire life isn’t to let go when things are going well. That’s what the song is about.

The second verse: “I lift the knife to the thing I love most, Praying You’ll come so I can have both” is about the moment that’s beautiful and intense and hard and you know that you don’t want to sacrifice something, but you need to be obedient to the calling. There’s usually a ram in the bush. That’s the beauty of the story, there’s someDid you base the song on any Bi- thing good around the corner and ble verses? you know God’s already beaten you to it. The Overseer The dudes in The Overseer know how to have a good time. I’m sitting in a green room in Germany as Brad, the bass player, prepares to chunk a rockhard loaf of bread out of a 4th story window. Those Germans seem to prefer their bread the same way Americans like their Chevys, so we’re about to test just how much “like a rock” this bread is. Brad is filling in on bass with my band Becoming The Archetype along with his Overseer drummer Abishai. I’m thinking of how much fun these guys are and how much it sucks that this is the last tour they’ll be able to do with us, because Solid State Records has finally listened up and realized how cool The Overseer is: they’re signing to become our labelmates as soon as the tour is over. It was a long road for these four guys to get signed. Formed in 2007 and touring nearly nonstop since then, they had to perfect their sound and their energetic live show before they could live their dream of being a Solid State band. The band started with the same four dudes they have now and they’re as close as brothers. Hailing from the only part of Arkansas that isn’t the armpit of the country (the Northwestern part), Brad, Abishai, Darren (guitars) and Tony (vocals) are the most hilarious four guys this side (that side?) of the Mississippi. Going to high school together and watching Razorback football together bonded them like brothers and it seems like the bond goes deeper than blood. This was obvious to Adam Skatula as he watched them

perform at LifeLight Fest in South Dakota last September. What Adam (Solid State A&R) saw blew him away, because the band had cemented into a cohesive, ubertight metal band that was fun to watch, fun to listen to, fun to talk to. Says Adam, “They were just insane live. The amount of sound they put out and energy they created as a four piece was unreal.”

So finally they’re on their dream label and their gritty debut album comes out on June 19. It’s called We Search, We Dig and is appropriately titled, because these guys are gritty and real. You can tell they’ve dug into themselves to work as hard as they have for as long as they have. You can tell they’ve dug into each other to create the four-headed monster that they are. You just don’t get this legit without getting scrappy and real with one another. We Search, We Dig was produced by Matt “The Sheriff of Tickle Town” McClellan at Glow in the Dark Studios in Atlanta. McClellan works at the studio beside renowned producer Matt Goldman and the two have churned out several great Christian metal albums in the last few years. The album’s production matches the gritty nature of the band, with organic distortion and drum sounds. The production is professional, though, so the band comes off as sounding like veterans who know how to make analog tones sound like

THE OVERSEER

will be playing HM STAGE at Creation Northeast Wednesday June 27th expensive, top-of-the-line production. You’ll hear hints of the new Underoath sound here and there as well as some of the artistic side of Thrice and the Deftones. The band isn’t into copying current trends, but their influences do show through on the songs and since I happen to like their influences, the outcome is rather enjoyable. Darren happens to play organ and sing very well, so the band isn’t balls-to-the-wall heavy all the time and I appreciate that. Keeping with their past habits, The Overseer will be touring nearly nonstop this year and next in support of the record, so if you want to see them live, it shouldn’t be difficult. If you are going to see them, do yourself a favor and pick up the album before you go so you know the words and can headbang in time. And if you don’t mind spending some time after the show, the guys are very approachable and would love hanging out to talk about spirituality (Abishai has “Religion is dead” written on his snare head) or college football (Brad has the Arkansas Razorbacks mascot tattooed on his thighs) or music gear (Darren plays through some sick pedals and an all-Orange full-stack) or having Jedi hair (Tony used to rock the padawan braid). These dudes will be sure to provide a great show every time and great albums for years to come, so pay attention now and be the first to see where Christian metal is going.

Candle lighting at Creation is truly a special time that ministers to each person in a unique way. Starting back in 1983, this was the first of many special candle light evenings that can only be experienced at the Creation Festival. Set in the beautiful hills of western Pa, with no city lights and only the cool evening air, the bright stars of the milky way shines above as thousands of believers gather on a hill side to give tribute to our Creator.

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.... Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5: 14-16

For many, baptism this is the beginning of a new journey in life. Creation has always offered baptism and as the old spiritual was sung: “As I went down in the river to pray Studying about that good ol’ way And who shall wear the starry crown? Good Lord show me the way O sinners, let’s go down Let’s go down, come on down O sinners, let’s go down Down in the river to pray...*

Baptism is about new life, life in Chirst. Creation Festival presents the gospel clearly that you must die to sin and become alive in Chirst. This will be the highlight of your summer maybe your LIFE!

“Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him....Even so consider yourselves also dead to sin and your relation to it broken, but alive to God [living in unbroken fellowship with Him] in Christ Jesus.” Romans 6: 8-11

Creation Festival has a banner that is flown high each year above the Main Stage that expresses what we desire to do throughout the time at the event which is to give “A Tribute To Our Creator” The Lord has done great things in our lives, He offers us Hope, Mercy, Grace, Salvation and most importantly, His Love. It is why we sing, and why we want to express the Joy of the Lord within us. Come and worship with thousands of common bond in Jesus this summer.

One question can change your life. Or maybe it’s best to say, your answer to a single question can change your life. When I was 14 the question was “Do you want to go to this festival called Creation?” Saying yes that summer has not only changed what I do the last week of June every year, but also influenced my career choice. That year was the first time I saw a sea of believers spread across the fields in tents and RV’s looking a bit like the 2 million Israelites following after God. A man named Harry Thomas stood on the main stage during the candle lighting and told us to remember the glow of the faithful when you feel alone. When it seems you are the only one among your peers who believes. The only one who is standing up for what is right. When you feel peer pressure to change. Remember. Some may falsely believe Creation is merely a concert. Creation is a family. Concerts are solo experiences. I’ve never gone to a concert, befriended someone sitting next to me, and remained friends for 10+ years even attending their wedding, baby showers, and the retirement party for their parents. There is diversity, energy, love, frustration, joy, and excitement. I’ve been inspired and challenged by fantastic spiritual leaders. Oh yes, and there is music. I return year after year because my work makes a difference. I’ve seen lives changed, bonds created, and spiritual walks deepened. As one member of the body of Christ, I can only do so much alone. When driving an artist to their hotel they were shocked to realize we took vacation time from our jobs to volunteer at the festival. He thanked me profusely. I accepted his thanks, but reminded him that his willingness to follow after God’s call in his life to pursue music allows me the opportunity to serve God by being a “Group Camping Supervisor” at Creation. I could show up and be ready to do my work, but if there was no one to perform, no one to speak, my efforts would be in vain. We all do our work for an audience of One, but what a joy to be doing that work surrounded in friendship and fellowship.

Yesterday I was asked, ‘Are you going to Creation this year?’ and my answer remains the same. Has someone asked you yet? If you need to shake up your walk with God, if you need to feel loved and supported during a time of trial, if you want to goof off and have fun in an environment that is like none you’ve experienced, then I will ask you, “Are you going to Creation this year?” The answer will change your summer – and maybe even your life Click Here to learn more about becoming a Creation Volunteer!

Or paddle through historic canal waterways and the no wake zones on Raystown Lake. Rothrock Outfitters in downtown Huntingdon can help with information and bike/kayak rentals if you need them. (insider’s tip: The new VeeCee trail on the Allegrippis system connects the trails to the Raystown Lake Region Visitor Center for a short AC break during your afternoon ride. Ask Evan at Rothrock about suggested trail routes.) There are many historic places and museums to visit if you wish to compliment your trip: Here is the link for locations close to Huntingdon like Isett Acres Museum, Swigart Antique Automobile Museum. You might also choose to check out the southern part of historic Huntingdon County with an excursion at the Rockhill Trolley Museum, the East Broad Top Railroad or the Broad Top Area Coal Miners Museum and Historical Society in Robertsdale. (Insider’s tip: there are 40,000 items on display at Isett Acres Museum all arranged by era/category. Swigart Antique Auto Museum has an amazing collection of autos and memorabilia ranging from the first motor-powered vehicles through today. See Herbie the Love Bug there! The Coal Miners Museum has a display that recreates a scene from an actual coal mine.)

There are always great things to do in the Raystown Lake of Pennsylvania during any season of the year. You can find a full list of all the upcoming events in Huntingdon County / Raystown Lake Region at this link.
