NCAA DIVISION III

MEMBERSHIPS

In 2013, Covenant became full members of the NCAA Division III following a four year transitional period from 2009-2013. The largest division, in terms of number of schools and number of participants, is Division III comprised by more than 170,000 student-athletes at 444 mostly smaller institutions. Academics are the primary focus for Division III student-athletes. The division minimizes the conflicts between athletics and academics and keeps student-athletes on a path to graduation through shorter practice and playing seasons, the number of contests, no redshirting and regional competition that reduces time away from academic studies. Student-athletes are integrated on campus and treated like all other members of the general student-body, keeping them focused on being a student first. The college experience is a time of learning and growth — a chance to follow passions and develop potential. For student-athletes in Division III, all of this happens most importantly in the classroom and through earning an academic degree. The Division III experience provides for passionate participation in a competitive athletic environment, in which student-athletes push themselves to excellence and build upon their academic success with new challenges and life skills. And student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their full passions and find their potential through a comprehensive educational experience. The Three D’s: Discover Division III student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their interests and passions beyond the classroom and field of play…to discover themselves. Develop Division III institutions provide an environment that encourages student-athletes to develop into well-rounded adults. Small class sizes, the ability to participate in more than one sport, and an emphasis on participating activities outside of the classroom are all hallmarks of the Division III experience. Dedicate Division III institutions expect student-athletes to dedicate themselves to achieving their potential. Student-athletes must manage their busy schedules, keep up with class work and face the same challenges as the rest of the student-body.

BARNES PE CENTER HOME OF THE SCOTS Barnes Physical Education Center was built in 1972 and named in honor of Covenant’s second president, Dr. Marion D. Barnes. The facility plays host to the Scots’ men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs as well as other athletic department needs. During the summer of 2013, Barnes PE Center received a facelift with new interior paint jobs and championship banners honoring all 13 of Covenant’s athletic programs. New bleachers were installed in October of 2013 to update the facility further. Seating capacity is set at 650. The main floor houses the game court to go along with offices for athletic administration. On the first floor are located an aerobic exercise room, weight room and more office space. The third floor has additional coaches and faculty offices and a classroom. Although a small venue, Barnes can become loud and raucous as spectators sit close to the action. In 2012-13, the Scots men’s basketball team used their home-court advantage to secure a 9-3 home record.

Kyle Taylor HEAD COACH

Head Coach

Kyle Taylor will enter his sixth year at the helm of the men’s basketball program in 2014-15. Taylor is also in his second year of serving as the school’s Director of Athletics. During his first four years, Taylor increased the win total each year and steadily built Covenant into a quality basketball program on the court. In 2012-13, the Scots registered their first winning season in 14 years with a 1311 overall mark. Taylor’s team saw a slight drop-off in wins during the 2013-14 campaign in the program’s first year in the USA South Athletic Conference. Taylor is encouraged by the improvements he has seen in the program each year. He is insistent about changing the culture of the program and focused on developing his guys into godly men on and off the court. Meekness, Servanthood, Accountability, Discipline, and Passion are the core values Taylor has implemented for the men’s basketball program over the past five years. He feels blessed by the opportunities he has had to communicate with some great recruits and enjoyed the opportunity to coach many of them. On the court, Taylor is committed to working toward developing a team that is a successful regional power each year. He is passionate about coaching a team that is exciting to watch, competitive, disciplined, up tempo offensively, and great in transition play. The men’s basketball program is committed first to developing players that represent Christ on and off the court. As young men who will graduate and go into all kinds of disciplines, the coaching staff believes it is important that players learn to represent Christ, Covenant College, their academics, and their families with class. The basketball program at Covenant is therefore both a place to understand how to play competitive basketball for the glory of God and also develop into godly men who will continue to be used for Kingdom work upon graduating. An important part of the basketball program during Taylor’s time at Covenant has been the opportunity to travel

In May 2011, Taylor took his team to Greece, and in August 2012, several of his players traveled to Newark, New Jersey to conduct basketball clinics and share the Gospel. The team also took a missions trip to Costa Rica in December 2012.

Peter Wilkerson

Full-time Assistant and JV Coach Peter Wilkerson will enter his first season in 2014-15 as the full-time assistant coach for head coach Kyle Taylor. Wilkerson replaces Brian Millar, who departed Covenant to become the Athletic Director at St. Anthony Junior-Senior High School in Wailuku, Hawaii. Wilkerson, a graduate of Covenant in 2013, spent one season at Maryville University in St. Louis, Missouri. His job duties included game analytics, redshirt development and overseeing the recruit database for the NCAA Division II program. “I’m excited about the opportunity to coach not only at the colle-

commented Taylor. “He had a great experience at Maryville University and learned a lot from a very good college basketball coach in Kevin Carroll. Maryville runs the same offense we do, so I’m excited

to learn and integrate the variations and teaching points that Peter learned under Coach Carroll.” During his time as a student at Covenant, Wilkerson was a part of the men’s basketball program as either a player or a student assistant for Taylor. Wilkerson graduated in 2013 with a degree in History. “I really needed someone who could recruit, and recruit to Covenant College specifically,” continued Taylor. “Peter knows this place well and will work incredibly hard on the recruiting trail.”

2014-15 SEASON PREVIEW

Experienced Scots Looking for Breakout Season LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN – In his sixth year as head coach of the Covenant men’s basketball program, Kyle Taylor has arguably his most talented and experienced team yet heading into the start of the 2014-15 season. The Scots, coming off a tough 8-17 record in the 2013-14 campaign, return all five starters and 16 players total. Additionally, seven seniors and five juniors make up the majority of Taylor’s 17-man roster. Even with all the experience returning, the Scots were picked to finish 10th in the 11-team USA South in the league’s preseason poll. “The difference between second and 11th in the conference is very minimal,” said Taylor who has piled up 38 wins in five years as head coach. “Just a few points separate those teams and if you play well on the right night you can finish very high in the standings. If you don’t, you’ll struggle.” The Scots found themselves in the latter category a season ago. Although Covenant played tight with opponents into the final minutes of several games, the Scots could not get over the hump on many occasions. In their final seven games, Covenant lost four of those contests by single digits. Taylor hopes that the experience from last season, mixed with the talent his team possesses, will turn Covenant’s fortunes around this season. “We need to play disciplined basketball,” continued Taylor. “Limiting turnovers, getting defensive rebounds and doing the little things will go a long way towards where we finish this season.” Senior Colton McGriff is Covenant’s top returning scorer from last season. The senior from Birmingham, Ala., averaged a career-high 15.4 points and 7.2 rebounds per game last season, both leading the team, and was named to the USA South All-Conference third team. He was a two-time USA South Player of the Week honoree.

SCOTS 2014-15 SEASON PREVIEW

“I really feel like Colton can have a big year,” added Taylor. “With the guys he has around him, I want him to score but also be more efficient in the way he scores.” Starting point guard Nate Frierson also returns coming off a career season a year ago. A senior from Laurel, Md., Frierson registered 7.8 points and 2.9 assists per game, both career-highs, in 2013-14. Frierson also continued to excel in the classroom as he was selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team and also earned academic honors from the USA South and NABC. “Nate is a cerebral guy who understands what we are trying to do out there,” said Taylor. “He is a disciplined player who can control the tempo of the game.” Taylor also expects breakout seasons from junior forward Chris Boyd as well as senior Teron Ferguson and junior Daniel Garrett. Boyd is coming off a year in which he averaged 7.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and over one block per game. Ferguson, who has been hampered by injuries throughout his career, was able to stay healthy and contributed significantly and is one of two team captains this year. Garrett played the second semester and ended up averaging 7.9 points per game, second-most on the team. “If Chris can stay healthy and stay out of foul trouble, I expect him to have a breakout year,” said Taylor of Boyd. “Also Teron and Daniel fit well into our style of play and will be important players this year, especially defensively.” Returning to Covenant this year is TJ Cox. Cox played two years for the Scots before leaving school for a year. Cox scored 8.7 points and dished out 3.5 assists per game in his sophomore season in 2012-13. “He brings the ability to create offensively,” noted Taylor of Cox. “When the play breaks down he can create something for himself or his teammates. He is a vocal leader and has a confidence about him. He has willed us to victories in the past and he can help turn some close losses into wins.” Overall, Taylor sees a team with talent to finish in the upper half of the USA South standings and earn a berth into the conference tournament. The top eight teams in the final conference standings qualify for the tournament. “I want us to give ourselves a legitimate chance to compete in the USA South tournament,” said Taylor. “This group of seniors wanted to turn Covenant into a contender when they arrived here four years ago. They have a lot of work to do to attain that goal, but that’s the challenge.” Covenant opens the season on the road against Stevenson in Owings Mills, Md., on Nov. 15. The Scots also play Goucher and Birmingham Southern on the road before opening the home portion of their schedule on Nov. 25 against Oglethorpe. The Scots will also face non-conference foes Emory and Sewanee at home before USA South play begins. “We have a tough non-conference schedule, but I’m excited for our guys and believe it will equip us well for conference play,” added Taylor. “I want our guys to be battled tested before USA South play begins.” Covenant will play its first four USA South games on the road before hosting North Carolina Wesleyan on Friday, Jan. 16. The USA South tournament is scheduled for Feb. 26-28 and the top-seeded team will host.

2013-14 SEASON IN REVIEW

The Covenant men’s basketball team entered its first year as members of the USA South Athletic Conference in 2013-14. The competition was tough as the Scots finished the season with an 8-17 overall record. The overall record marked the first time in the Kyle Taylor coaching era that the Scots did not improve their record from the previous season. 2013-14 also marked the first season that Covenant did not have a senior on the varsity roster. Junior forward Colton McGriff earned third team AllUSA South honors after averaging 15.4 points per game to go along with a team-high 7.2 rebounds per contest. Fellow junior Nate Frierson had a career season as he averaged 7.8 points and 2.9 assists per game. Sophomore Chris Boyd posted 7.2 points and 5.6 rebounds per contest. Freshman Ben Phelps shot nearly 50 percent from 3-point land for the majority of the season before finishing at 42.7 percent for the year. Phelps tallied 7.2 points per game in his rookie season. Playing in the second semester, Daniel Garrett was a spark offensively for the Scots as he averaged 7.9 points, four rebounds and 1.1 assists per game.

The overall record might have been a disappointment, but Covenant looks to be strong next season as McGriff and Frierson return to lead a host of rising seniors along with several other key contributors.

Awards:

USA South Player of the Week Colton McGriff - twice (Dec. 9, Dec. 16)

USA South All-Conference Colton McGriff - 3rd Team Chris Boyd - All-Sportsmanship

Georgia Basketball Coaches Association All-State Colton McGriff - 2nd Team CoSIDA Academic All-District Nate Frierson

Other freshmen Will Portlock, Robby Bell and Z Arima played key roles throughout the season. Covenant got out to a fast start in non-conference play. After exhibition games against NCAA Division I opponents Kennesaw State and Chattanooga, the Scots opened the regular season with a 71-65 victory at Berry. Covenant bounced back from a loss to Emory & Henry with consecutive wins over SAA foes Sewanee and Millsaps to improve to 3-1 on the season. The Scots took a long road trip to Minnesota to face Crown and Bethany Lutheran. After dropping a heartbreaker to Crown in the final seconds, the Scots responded with a 94-76 win over Bethany Lutheran as McGriff scored a career-high 35 points. Covenant entered USA South play with a 5-5 record after a 94-90 overtime victory against Berry before Christmas Break. The Scots edged Ferrum 71-68 to open conference action but would lose the next five games. A two-game win streak followed, including a victory in overtime against eventual USA South Tournament champion, and NCAA Tournament participant, LaGrange. The Scots would come close several times in the final month of the season but could not claim another victory.

WE ARE THE

SCOTS Parents/Boosters/Alumni/Fans Are you a Booster?

A booster is an individual that:

COMPLIANCE

• Promotes Covenant athletics program. • Makes a financial contribution to Covenant athletics or its booster organizations. • Assists in the recruitment of prospects for Covenant. • Provides benefits (e.g., jobs, occasional meals) to enrolled student-athletes. Once a booster.....Always a booster. It is important to remember that once an individual has been identified as a booster, he or she retains that status forever. If you have questions whether you are considered a booster of Covenant Athletics or if you have questions about what you may or may not do as a booster, please feel free to contact the Compliance Office at tim.sceggel@covenant.edu. What is an extra benefit? Fans and boosters may not provide anything to prospects or currently enrolled student-athletes (or their families) without prior approval from the Compliance Office. If a student-athlete and/or his or her family accepts any benefits of special consideration (e.g., transportation, clothing, money, meals, etc.) based on his or her athletic skill, the student-athlete will lose his or her eligibility and Covenant will be subject to NCAA penalties. Extra benefits can include, but, are not limited to: • Money, gifts, clothing, tickets for entertainment, haircut, and use of a car. • Free or reduced-cost room or board anywhere. • Free or reduced-cost merchandise or services. • Use of Athletics Department copy/fax machines, long distance telephone services or free use of a cell phone. • Typing or editing reports, papers, letters, etc. for a student-athlete. • A loan of money or the consigning of a note to arrange a loan. • The sale or trade of complimentary admissions for merchandise, services or debt repayment. • The sale or trade of ANY items a student-athlete has received for his or her participation in athletics (e.g., gear, clothing, awards). This list is not exhaustive. Please refrain from offering prospects and/or current student-athletes and their families and friends anything that is not available to all students or the general public. Any questions or concerns should be directed to: Tim Sceggel Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance & Operations Email: tim.sceggel@covenant.edu or phone: 706.419.1517
