CODY BROWN Gloucester Catholic Player of the Year

Standing on the mound, Cody Brown would seldom shake off a sign. All spring, the senior left-hander seemed to be on the same page as his catcher, Elliott McCummings. The two were in sync, working as a tandem to shut down opponents at an alarming rate. Whether he hit the corners with an off-speed pitch or blew away a batter with an above-average fastball, Brown was always around the plate and no one could argue with the results. ‘‘On the field, it was like we were the same person,’’ Brown said. ‘‘We thought the same way with what was working and there was a lot of chemistry.’’ In leading the Rams to their their second straight Non-Public B state title and the No. 1 ranking in the Courier-Post Top 10, Brown set the Gloucester Catholic record with 26 career wins. This season, he went 12-0 with a 0.80 ERA. He struck out 79 and walked 20 in 70 innings, anchoring a staff that posted a 1.16 ERA and struck out 219 batters. ‘‘He was the most ath-

letic guy on the field,’’ teammate Brett Tenuto said. ‘‘He pumped strikes and always gets the out.’’ For his efforts, Brown has been selected the 2011 Courier-Post Baseball Player of the Year. ‘‘I love being in the moment. I love having the ball in my hand in a big game,’’ said Brown, who will attend Central Connecticut State. ‘‘When the pressure is on, it hypes me up and makes me want to
do well. ‘‘Looking back, you have to be impressed with how the season went. I was undefeated, threw a lot of strikes and my ERA was low. I was definitely pleased with the year and how everything played out.’’ Brown gave up only two runs in 16 postseason innings, earning the win in each of the Rams’ final three games. He threw his first career no-hitter in the sectional final against Holy Cross and came back with a two-hitter as Gloucester Catholic (31-2) routed Newark Academy 14-2 in the state final. He faced the minimum nine batters over the first three innings, allowing only a second-inning walk — but he then picked the runner off first base. Brown would end the final — and start the celebration of the program’s 15th state crown — by picking off a runner at second base. ‘‘I can’t think of a kid who’s more of a competitor than Cody Brown,’’ coach Dennis Barth said. ‘‘He comes to play every day. ‘‘You don’t get to break the school record without having a great career. He was even better this year
than the last two years. He’s an awesome competitor and the kids just had confidence behind him because of that.’’ With tremendous pitching depth, it was not a given that Brown would become the team’s ace. But during the season, he earned every inning on the hill and seldom disappointed. ‘‘We had a good staff, but he just had a little bit better season than everybody else,’’ Barth said. ‘‘He wants the ball when the game is on the line.’’ Said Brown: ‘‘I thank (Barth) for having confidence in me. Any one of us could have been out on the mound. We all threw strikes and all worked hard. It made for great competition. ‘‘We all wanted to do better than the next guy. We worked harder and harder to get what we wanted.’’ At the plate, Brown was pretty effective, too. He batted .390 (32-for-82) with seven doubles, two triples, two home runs, 20 runs and 36 RBIs. There was never a day when Brown didn’t give all he had. Said Tenuto: ‘‘Cody is the best.’’

Every coach wants to see their team succeed. For some, it’s a winning record. For others, maybe a division championship or winning a first-round playoff game does the trick. Sean Cassel had a lot on his plate this spring. The fourth-year coach of the Seneca baseball team had to keep one eye on the status of a future first-round draft pick, while the other was focused on reaching the team’s long-term goal. Another part was to have his team peaking at just the right time and set to win six straight games. ‘‘We were always where we needed to be,’’ Cassel said. ‘‘We did hit a rough patch for a few games in the middle of the season, but as long as you remain focused ...
‘‘We stuck to our one goal, which was to just go out and play good baseball each and every time. We
were able to do that all the way back to May 23 when we had our first playoff game. ‘‘As a coach, your job is to make sure your highs don’t get too high and your lows not too low, and keep your eyes on the prize.’’ With Comer - the 57th overall pick by the Toronto Blue Jays in the recent amateur draft - winning five of those necessary six games, Seneca capped its season with the Group 3 state championship — the ultimate prize. For his efforts this season — culminating with
the second state title in school history — Sean Cassel has been selected as the 2011 Courier-Post Baseball Coach of the Year. ‘‘He treats us all as equal and does a good job to make sure we’re all safe and protected,’’ Comer said. ‘‘He did that with me with my pitch counts. ‘‘He cared more for us as people than baseball players.’’ Said senior shortstop Ryan Williams: ‘‘He was just so consistent.’’ Seneca finished 16-7 overall. CAMP OBJECTIVE Sportz Central will sponsor the Gloucester Catholic Summer Baseball camp. Gloucester Catholic Head Baseball Coach, Dennis Barth, will direct the camp. The camp will teach and demonstrate some of the baseball skills and drills that are taught and learned by one of South Jersey’s most successful baseball program— Gloucester Catholic. The Rams Camp will feature current and former players, who take part in the rich tradition of GCHS Baseball. Campers will be taught fundamentals in all areas of baseball. Courier-Post Staff Sterling coach Kelly Tallant has a love for the sport of softball that goes back many years. That love and passion shines through with her coaching. Tallant has a way of making her point without yelling and screaming, but her players hear her loud and clear. The 1999 Eastern High School graduate returned some talent this season, but had to plug in some holes after losing five seniors to graduation.
The biggest void was on the pitching mound where ace Jamie Lambe was gone. Tallant moved her center fielder Sarah Almasy, who had pitched a few games last season, to the mound and moved some other players around and it was a winning formula for the Silver Knights, who finished 23-4 and won a South Jersey Group 2 title with a 1-0 win over Buena. For her efforts, Tallant is the 2011 Courier-Post Softball Coach of the Year. ‘‘Everyone just meshed well,’’ said Tallant, 30, who just completed her fourth season and has a 93-16 re-
cord. ‘‘We moved people around in the beginning of the year. The kids were great. They were OK doing what we wanted to do and it
work.’’ Tallant was a standout pitcher for the Vikings, who played for parts of two collegiate seasons at Mt. Saint Mary’s in Maryland. A problem with her kidneys, which required five surgeries, forced her to ‘‘retire’’ midway through her sophomore season. ‘‘My kidney was not working and I got really sick,’’ she said. ‘‘When I finally got better in February of my senior year, the coach asked me if I wanted to come back out, but I was completely out of shape. I throw batting practice to the girls now, but that’s
about it.’’ And she coaches. Tallant, who is assisted by her father Josh Tallant (her mother Gail keeps the scorebook), coached Sterling to a Group 2 state title in 2008. This season, the Silver Knights were eliminated in the Group 2 state semifinals in a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Robbinsville on June 7, but they played well in that final game. The Silver Knights also won the Overbrook Tournament this season. ‘‘It (pitching) was a question mark this season because I knew we needed somebody on the mound,’’
Tallant said. ‘‘Sarah completely changed over the course of the year. She matured. She wanted to be in tough situations. She’s a reason we got so far. She did great for us to keep us in games no matter what.’’ Almasy was one of four seniors along with Kylie McGoldrick, Kylie O’Donnell, who moved from right field to center this season, and Alyssa Giambri. ‘‘I had great seniors,’’ Tallant said. ‘‘We came out with high expectations. The kids really came together as a team to win a championship. They set a goal in mind and they got there.’’

EMILY BAUSHER New Egypt Player of the Year

New Egypt senior pitcher Emily Bausher never let opposing teams see her sweat. Bausher was seemingly unflappable under pressure and no moment was bigger than the third inning of New Egypt’s eventual 9-2 win over Whippany Park in the Group 1 state final on June 11 in Toms River. Whippany Park had scored two runs and Bausher had walked another batter, her third of the third inning. Whippany Park was within 3-2 and seemed to be gaining some confidence against the defending Group 1 state champs. Bausher struck out the next batter to end the inning. She ended up retiring the final 13 batters of the game and New Egypt collected its second straight state crown. Granted, New Egypt (25-3) had 12 hits in the game, including four home runs, but Bausher’s pitching — she tossed a onehitter with 13 strikeouts and four walks — was a huge reason New Egypt repeated. Bausher, the 2011 Courier-Post Softball Player of the Year, finished with a 24-3 record, an 0.66 ERA with seven no-hitters, 19 shutouts, 353 strikeouts, scattering 55 hits and issuing 28 walks. Bausher, who was named the 2011 Gatorade New Jersey Softball Player of the

She ended her career with 1,077 strikeouts. The 5-foot-8 right-hander also led the New Egypt in batting (.545), runs (44), hits (54), doubles (16) and had 26 RBIs and four home runs. ‘‘The stuff that we put into practice and everything about every game that we
lost this year, everything about every game that we won this year, we put it all together and through those wins and losses we really came out on top (last Saturday),’’ said Bausher, who was the 2010 Courier-Post Softball Player of the Year. ‘‘It was hard to find that one spot, but throughout the ending half of the game I really zoned in on that. ‘‘It feels amazing. It feels so much better than the first one (state title), if that can even be imaginable. Backto-back is something that people only dream about. They think about it and they never really think it’s going to come true, but for us it did.’’ New Egypt senior first baseman Morgan Knigge said she thinks the world of Bausher, who will play softball at Lehigh next season. ‘‘Emily, she’s my best friend,’’ Knigge said. ‘‘We’ve been friends since second grade and we play basketball together, softball together, played travel teams together. She’s an amazing teammate, an amazing person and an amazing friend.’’ Said New Egypt senior shortstop Kayla Soles, who also calls Bausher her best friend: ‘‘Em and I’ve played together since I was 7. The fact that you got to see her when she was seven. You so remember and then you see her now and she’s 18 and how much better she is and how much potential she has, it’s like the greatest
thing in the world to see your best friend succeed.’’ ‘‘She (Bausher) means a lot,’’ New Egypt coach Kevin English said. ‘‘We could focus on a lot of other things on our team, because you know you’re going to get a strong outing and batted balls are not going to be hit hard for the most part and she’s going to strike out a lot of people. Em’s unbelievable. The best thing about her, for me, is her calm demeanor, nothing rattles her. She’s ready for any situation.’’ New Egypt senior catcher Haley Anderson has caught for Bausher since they were about 12 and she’s seen the tremendous growth over the years as well. ‘‘She handles pressure so well, everyone just has so much faith in her and trusts her,’’ Anderson said. ‘‘They (Bausher and Anderson) called their own games, pitch selection, things like that,’’ English said. ‘‘You give it to them in hopes that they run with it and do the right things and they have.’’ Asked to sum up her career, Bausher, who was also a standout in field hockey basketball at New Egypt, didn’t talk about personal accolades, of which there were many. ‘‘I would say teamwork,’’ AL SCHELL/Courier-Post file she said. ‘‘Throughout my four years, that’s the one New Egypt senior pitcher Emily Bausher was 24-3 with thing that I’ll miss the seven no-hitters and 19 shutouts. most.’’

The Willingboro boys’ track program rekindled its glorious past during the 2011 season. While legendary stars such as former Olympian Carl Lewis and multi-event standouts Lamont Smith and Gerard Reynolds have engraved their names into local lore, a new generation has lifted the Chimeras back into statewide prominence. Standouts such as Traven Mable, Matt Dash, Brandon Bennett and Rashaun Houston capped off brilliant careers recently when they helped the Chimeras to solid second-place finishes in both the Group 2 state and sectional championship meets. Education - Prevention - Identification - Management And it all started with a simple formula — making the athletes believe in their talents. ‘‘The talent was always there — we just needed these young men to believe in themselves,’’ said Booker. ‘‘With coach Lewis and our other assistant coaches, we made sure they were aware of our great history in track, and that they could make it to a high level too.’’ Dash, a standout quarterback who signed with Dean College (Mass.) for football, is thankful to Booker, assistant coach Lawrence and assistant coach Lewis for re-energizing the program. ‘‘We all knew we had some great athletes here, but no one knew how to put it all together for us until coach Book, coach Lawrence and Carl (Lewis) came along,’’ Dash said. ‘‘All the coaches have a put a lot of effort into our team, and look at what we’ve been able to accomplish.’’

DAMIERE BYRD Timber Creek Player of the Year

Fastest runner in New Jersey. Timber Creek’s Damiere Byrd waited a full year for the chance to earn that title, and now that distinction belongs only to him after blazing to the Meet of Champions 100-meters title in 10.41 seconds at Old Bridge on June 9. While vindication felt nice, the University of South Carolina-bound Byrd has already gotten back to work. ‘‘It felt great to win the championship, but I’ve already put it behind me and have started working out for football season.’’ In a 2011 track season in which a nagging hamstring injury limited his events, Byrd once again quieted the naysayers. Many doubted that the senior speedster stood a chance in the Meet of Champions 100 race against longtime rival Miles Shuler-Foster of Long Branch. Shuler-Foster edged Byrd in the 2010 Meet of Champions, and even had a faster time than Byrd in the 100 trials on June 9. But once the finals rolled around, Byrd — in his words — let the adrenaline take over. He blazed to a time of 10.41 seconds to capture the 100 over Shuler-Foster to seal his legacy as one of New Jersey’s all-time top sprinters.

Won Group 3 state crown in 100 in 10.50 . . . Captured sectional titles in the 100 and 200 along with a second in the 400 . . . Ran the state’s fastest time of the season in 100 with a 10.36 seconds in trials, just short of the state record of 10.35 seconds set in 2001 . . . Also, a standout football wide receiver for Timber Creek. For his efforts Byrd has been named by the CourierPost as boys’ track and field Player of the Year. Just two weeks earlier before the Meet of Champions, Byrd posted the second fastest time in state history in the 100 with a 10.36 in the South Jersey sectionals. He narrowly missed tying the state record of 10.35 seconds set by Jamar Ervin of Camden in 2001. All that was left was to win a Meet of Champions title against his toughest opponent, Shuler-Foster — and he needed to get the job done with a nagging injury that wouldn’t let up. He suffered the injury during the South Jersey sectional champion-
ships on May 28, and it forced him to limit his events in both the sectional and Group 3 state championships the following week. But the injury would not keep Byrd from racing Shuler-Foster. Running out of lane 5, Byrd turned on the juice in the final 30 meters to whiz by Shuler-Foster, who was just to his left in lane 4 and finished with a time of 10.55. "Last year it was in my head after I lost, but I finally put it behind me after about two months,’’ said Byrd, who had also won an indoor 60-meters national title in March. "This was my senior year, my last chance, and I knew I had won an indoor national championship, so I was ready . . . It (the injury) didn’t bother me while I ran. I just let the adrenaline take over." Byrd’s triumph in the Meet of Champions 100 meters put the stamp on a career loaded with highlights, including: ■ Capturing the New Balance indoor national 60-meters championship in 6.74 seconds at the Armory in New York in March. ■ Winning three individual Group 3 state championship races in one day at South Plainfield during his junior year in 2010. ■ Sealing his status as one of the state’s top long jumpers this spring, with a leap of 23-5 at the South Jersey sectionals in May. Only
his hamstring injury kept him from competing in the event in the state championships the following week. ■ Leading Timber Creek to four straight Group 3 state track championships and elevating the program into elite status among New Jersey teams. Timber Creek head coach Chris Grottini has noted time and time again that Byrd never relied on his reputation as a fast runner. ‘‘It’s all business with Damiere,’’ Grottini said. ‘‘He’s an amazing hard worker and a leader. His success all comes from the hard work he’s put in during the past four years. He worked hard to develop his enormous talent. ‘‘And by the time he made it to his junior year, all of his teammates were following his lead. He’s helped us develop a top-tier program based on hard work and dedication.’’ Byrd, a standout wide receiver in football, will concentrate on football at the University of South Carolina. However, as part of his acceptance, he will also be allowed to continue with track. ‘‘I love track and field and I’m good at it,’’ Byrd said, ‘‘I just didn’t want to give up on it, so I’m glad I’ll have a chance to run track in college too.’’ Reach Gus Ostrum at gostrum@camden.gannett.com

STE’YCE McNEIL Winslow Twp. Player of the Year

Mission accomplished. While talented Winslow Township track star Ste’yce McNeil made her mark as one of New Jersey’s fastest hurdlers and sprinters during a glorious 2011 spring season, she insists her biggest accomplishment was merely following in her family’s footsteps. McNeil reached this goal on June 9 during the NJSIAA Meet of Champions at Old Bridge when she grabbed the 100 low hurdles state crown, an event she hoped to win in honor of her mom, Zonya Cross, a former standout Edgewood High champion in 1983-1984. McNeil blazed to a first place time of 14.23 seconds, edging Kingsway’s Jasmine Waddell, who finished second at 14.29. ‘‘This was my Mom’s event in high school and I just wanted to uphold a family tradition,’’ she smiled afterwards. ‘‘I’m thrilled I could do this for her. This is my biggest accomplishment.’’ That effort — along with a season-long parade of individual and team success — earned McNeil the Courier-Post’s South Jersey Girls’ Track Runner of the Year honors. McNeil has been watched closely by dozens of major colleges since she burst onto the track and field scene as a freshman. During the recent indoor season, McNeil blazed to Group 3 state championships in the 55 hurdles in 8.19 seconds and the 400 in 56.69 seconds at The Bennett Athletic Complex in Toms River in February. She also placed a razorclose second in the 400 at the Meet of Champions to Columbia star Olivia Baker the following week, capping off a brilliant indoor campaign. To top it all off, she helped the Eagles rise to a South Jersey Group 3 indoor championship in midFebruary and second place finishes in the South Jersey and Group 3 state meets this spring. Her teammates also cite her leadership skills in helping the Eagles perform well in major meets this spring. ‘‘I’m just glad that I have the talent and the coaching staff to help me be here today,’’ said Cidea’a Woods, a freshman who ran track in middle school last year. ‘‘Ste’yce (McNeil) has been a great help, giving me advice and helping me any way she can. The wait was well worth it. Their time had finally arrived. Lenape girls’ track Gerald Richardson and his team celebrated a first in school history when the Indians finally toppled longtime nemesis Southern Regional for the South Jersey Group 4 sectional championship on May 28 at Egg Harbor. On that day the Indians won the South Jersey Group 4 title — the first in school history — thanks to a cast of unselfish team players ranging from freshmen to seniors, who ended years of frustration of playing second fiddle to the Rams. The Indians collected 107 points to defeat powerful Southern Regional (86) for the crown. Richardson’s team had finished second in Group 4 competition five times through the years, so this win felt especially good. ‘‘This was huge for our
program because Southern Regional is such as dominant program,’’ said Richardson, a third-year coach. ‘‘Everyone made up their minds collectively that this was going to be our time, so mentally we were in the right place.’’ For his efforts in guiding Lenape to the sectional title, the Olympic Conference American Division championship, and a No. 2 finish in the Courier-Post Girls’ Track rankings, Richardson has been selected as the region’s Coach of the Year.

Following their title win, members of Lenape’s youthful team echoed their coach’s successful ‘‘teamfirst’’ approach. ‘‘Today was all about running for the team and not for individual attention,’’ said sophomore distance runner Amanda Restivo, a placewinner in the 3,200. ‘‘We all knew what we had to do in every race and everyone contributed.’’ Indeed. Among those key contributors were freshman Emily McGee and juniors Evann Thompson and Shaya Wilkerson in helping the Indians wrap up the sectional triumph. ‘‘All of our hard work is finally paying off,’’ Thompson said. ‘‘Our performance here today as a team is huge for our program. We always had the confidence we could do it, but it’s great to see it actually happen.’’ The Indians faltered the following week in the Group 4 state meet, but that did not diminish their season-long accomplishments.

Valore his opinion of who most deserves the accolade as the best boys’ lacrosse player of the year, and the St. Augustine coach doesn’t hesitate for a second. ‘‘Steve Pontrello is flatout the best player in South Jersey, and I say that without reservation,’’ Valore said. ‘‘He has the ability to win games, he has to ability to control games, and he’s the focal point of every defense we play against.’’ O.K., we’re convinced. One of his trademarks is a rocket-hard, accurate shot and he’s dangerous with either hand. That’s not by accident. He has the mindset and a good work-ethic that will serve to help him improve his game. Team practice time serves as only part of his game preparation. ‘‘I work on all the footwork playing all the right angles,’’ he said. ‘‘I put in a lot of preparation in both before and during the season.’’ Aside from the usual attributes, such as good speed and physical toughness, Valore said Pontrello brings lots of intangibles to his game as well. ‘‘He’s a good leader, and a good captain,’’ Valore said. ‘‘The guys listen to what he has to say.’’

On the one hand, you’d think it wouldn’t be too tough of a job coaching the Moorestown boys’ lacrosse team. After all, the Quakers have had South Jersey’s most established, and arguably most successful program, adding its third state championship to its list of laurels this year. Plus the team is stocked by a well-developed feeder program that assures a number of skilled players will always be available for the varsity team. But, on the other hand, Moorestown annually plays what must be considered the toughest schedule in South Jersey, and the pressure to win day in an day out and compete for a state championship every year must be enormous. This season, Moorestown coach Baron Wallenhurst found success against all of those challenges. He guided his team back on course after the group got off to an 0-3 start, and he would up directing the Quakers to the Group 3 state title. For his efforts in guiding the Quakers to a 13-8 record and a No. 2 finish in the Courier-Post Top 10 rankings, Wallenhurst has been named as this season’s 2011 boys’ lacrosse Coach of the Year. Having completed his sixth year as head coach, Wallenhurst is a believer that preparation is the key to his team’s success. ‘‘I think as a team we always practice well,’’ he said. ‘‘We’re always working hard, I think, even if it doesn’t always show on the field. The challenge for us is to work hard and have that carry over onto the field.’’ Many of the Quakers’ losses can be attributed to the fact that they play an extremely high level of competition. They are members of the Skyline Conference, a group of teams that produced three state champions this year. ‘‘I think playing a tough schedule helps us,’’ Wallenhurst said. ‘‘I think sometimes you learn a little more from a loss then from a win. ‘‘Losses help realize where you’re weak where you need corrections. Then you work on those thing as perfect running machine.’’ The Quakers relied all season on a balanced offensive attack and a strong defense that was led by All-Courier-Post players, Dane Dickey, Nick Natoli and sophomore goalie Dan Willis. With their help, the Quakers closed the season with a flourish. The No. 5 seed going into the tournament, they defeated the No. 1 and 2 seeds, Ridgewood and Ridge in the state semifinals and finals, respectively. Moorestown’s season ended in the quarterfinals of the Tournament of Champions with a loss to eventual champion Bridgewater-Raritan.

There are certain people who have achieved such a consistent level of success that they could be honored as coach of the year in almost any given season. Deanna Knobloch, the longtime and highly-successful coach of the Moorestown girls’ lacrosse team is one of those people. This is one of those years in which she will actually receive the honor. After guiding her team to a ninth No. 1 finish in the Courier-Post Top 10, and an 11th berth in the Tournament of Champions final, Knobloch has been named by the as 2011 Coach of the Year. The Quakers met with a heartbreaking end to their season with a 10-9 loss to Ridgewood in the Tournament of Champions final, but that should not diminish what the team was able to accomplish this year. The Quakers went 22-4, and those losses were primarily the result of two factors — an extremely difficult schedule, and the fact that this year the Quakers are a young team. There were times when the Quakers, who had only 10 seniors on the roster, would three or four freshman on the field playing regular minutes. ‘‘We knew we had a lot of young players and we thought this was going to be a rebuilding year,’’ Knobloch said. ‘‘But it turned out that wasn’t even an issue. The girls came out and played as if they’d been together for a long time.’’ This is not to suggest the team was devoid of some experienced and talent players. Led by the goalie-midfield tandem of Bridget Bianco and Stephanie Toy, the Quakers have two of the best players in South Jersey. Add on such talented payers as Nikki Shapiro, Nikki McMonigal, Haleigh Dalmass, Erin McAfee, and Sherri Fauvell, and that serves to add great depth to the program. But there were still a lot of questions about the team when the season began. The Quakers were coming off a 2010 season that unceremoniously ended with a loss to Shawnee in the South Jersey Group 3 final. No one knew how well the returning players would bounce back this season. The Quakers showed signs they were back when they defeated then No. 1 ranked Shawnee in a regular season game in April, and then avenged their loss to the same team in a rematch in the sectional final. ‘‘This team is a bunch of fighters,’’ Knobloch said.

BRIDGET BIANCO Moorestown Player of the Year

Moorestown High School girls’ lacrosse coach Deanna Knobloch recently was talking to a couple of reporters about her star goalie Bridget Bianco. After they recorded the fact that Knobloch held such a high regard for her senior captain, the reporters moved on to address other issues with other players. But then Knobloch returned. She wanted to say a few more words about Bianco. The coach went on to outline how much she believed her multiple skilled star had contributed to the success of Moorestown effort this season, and throughout her career. ‘‘There’s nobody like her,’’ Knobloch said. ‘‘With her quickness, her ability and intensity . . . nobody does it better. She’s just such an athlete all-around from top to bottom.’’ Indeed, the Northwestern University-bound Bianco once again this season proved herself as one of the most dominating forces in South Jersey lacrosse. Because of her efforts, for the second straight season, she has been named girls’ lacrosse Player of the
Year by the Courier-Post. The award meant a lot to Bianco. ‘‘Lacrosse is a sport that has meant everything to me,’’ she said. ‘‘It’s my passion, it’s what I live for.’’ Moorestown finished No. 1 in the Courier-Post rankings, despite losing by one goal to Ridgewood in the Tournament of Champions final. The Quakers are a multi-talented team with star players all over the field, as witnessed by having four players earn a place on the All-Courier-Post team. But Bianco is the one who holds everything together. ‘‘She’s our rock,’’ Knobloch said. The coach likes to tell the story of how Bianco’s reputation preceded her to high school. From the first time Knobloch saw Bianco play, she knew she was watching something special. ‘‘She could have played for us when she was in middle school,’’ Knobloch said. ‘‘In fact there was one point when the family talked about moving, but I think we called them and said we can’t allow that to happen.’’ However, according to Knobloch, there is another side of Bianco, one that she doesn’t even show her teammates, and the oppo-
sition. ‘‘She’s not that intense person you see on the field all the time,’’ Knobloch said. ‘‘She has a fun personality when she’s not on goal. She really makes me laugh, even though when she’s in goal you wouldn’t know it.’’ Bianco has been a varsity starter the past two season, and she split time as a starter in her sophomore year. She play in nine games as a freshman. This season, she helped led the Quakers to a 22-4 record by allowing 4.8 goals a game. She had a career high 163 saves in 26 games She saw her role increase as a team leader for her senior year. ‘‘Being a goalie you see the field and always point different ways to go,’’ she said. ‘‘I think this year more people listened to me. I have the experience and I’m easy to talk to and I just lead the team the best I can.’’ She has drawn the attention not only of her teammates, but of her opponents, as well. ‘‘Bridget is phenomenal,’’ said Kelci Smesko of Ridgewood. ‘‘I give her so much credit, and she’s going to be so great in college. She’s defiantly and intimidating factor.’’ Now that it’s over Bianco said she’s ready to move on to college, and a new be-

When the 2011 volleyball season was set to begin Collingswood coach Joe Gillespie didn’t have any idea how the season would play out. Sure he had Julian Welsh-White who just happened to be one of the best players in the area. After him, there was some talent but fitting them into certain positions was one of the problems facing Gillespie. ‘‘I knew what I had in Julian but the big problem was how to setup our service and receive,’’ Gillespie said. ‘‘Ever since Harrison Carsillo graduated (2009) that has been one of our problems.’’ Through the preseason and in early regular season matches Gillespie tinkered with his lineup trying to fit the players into positions that best suited their talents. ‘‘It took a while to get it right,’’ Gillespie said. ‘‘For instance we had John Pham in the middle to start. He is an excellent player but he is at his best on the outside so that didn’t work out. Once we moved him to the outside and put our setter Ron Dunn in the middle things started to click for us.’’ With things in place things took off the Panthers and Gillespie, who started the program in 1994, guided his team to a 20-3 record and a share of the Olympic Conference Freedom Division crown. For his accomplishments the Courier-Post selected Gillespie the 2011 Coach of the Year. He also reached the same honor in 2006. ‘‘As far as I’m concerned he deserves the honor,’’ said Welsh-White, who will attend Ball State University on a volleyball scholarship. ‘‘I couldn’t ask for a better coach. He has done everything for me and he has become a great friend.’’ Welsh-White said few people know the hours Gillespie has put in molding his kids into good volleyball players as well responsible young men. ‘‘He has spent an enormous amount of time with all of us,’’ Welsh-White said. ‘‘He not only drilled us in the fundamentals of volleyball and taught us the value of teamwork but he has also taught us a lot of life lessons. I know I’ll never forget all he has done for me personally.’’ Gillespie himself admits this was a special season and one that he won’t soon forget. ‘‘Sure Julian was the key to our team,’’ Gillespie said. ‘‘But a lot of our kids stepped up their game and made big contributions to our success. Kids like Nigel Patterson, Derek Wormley, Niyaz Ali, Baggio Myles and Tyrell Mann-Barnes played very big roles in our success.’’ The Panthers only three loses came at the hands of Cherry Hill East (twice) and Cinnaminson.

For the second straight year Eric Zaun proved to be the best volleyball player in South Jersey. The Cherry Hill East senior not only left an indelible mark on the school’s volleyball program but all of a South Jersey as well. ‘‘He is the best player I have had in my 18 years at Cherry Hill East,’’ said East coach Karl Moehlmann. ‘‘We have had other very good players but none have had the allaround talent Eric has. He is without the hardest hitter we have ever had.’’ Over the past two season Zaun has been the sparkplug that has enabled the Cougars to compile a 41-9 record and reach the South Jersey championship round before falling to Southern Regional both times. ‘‘It was been a great run and a lot of fun,’’ Zaun said. ‘‘But they were two completely different seasons. Last year I played with a very experienced and talented group of seniors. I never felt I had to carry more than my share of the load.’’ But Zaun knew coming
into the 2011 season things would be different. Much different. ‘‘We didn’t have a lot of varsity experience to start this year,’’ Zaun said. ‘‘I just felt I had to be more of a leader. But I still felt we were going to have a pretty good season. And we did. But even bigger than that is we had a lot of fun.’’ Zaun’s main goal coming into the season was to make sure Moehlmann got his 300th victory on his watch. ‘‘I wanted that so much for him for all he has done for me and the Cherry Hill East program,’’ Zaun said. ‘‘He has meant so much to me. He not only taught me the physical aspects of the game but also the mental part. He taught me the right way to handle myself on the court.’’ The 2011 season has been a record-setting year for the 6-3 Zaun. He set a school record with 369 kills for the season and he finished his career with a school record 757. His 27 kills against Cinnaminson on May 20 broke his own school single match record. Seven times this season he had 21 or more kills in a match and averaged

Courier-Post Staff High school tennis is supposed to be a team sport, but sometimes it can be individualized, thanks to personalities or outcomes. But not on George Kemery’s watch. The seventh year head coach at Eastern emphasizes the difference between playing for a team, and playing for yourself. ‘‘I try to stress team over individual,’’ said Kemery. ‘‘Tennis is like a track — sometimes you win your race, but the team loses. ‘‘A lot of kids can separate themselves, and it becomes about them . . . I don’t tolerate that.’’ Kemery’s mindset helped take a team that no one saw coming to the South Jersey Group 4 championship. It was Eastern’s first such title since 2003 when Kemery was an assistant coach for the team. The Vikings went 18-6 under Kemery, and defeated a tough Toms River North team 3-2 to win the sectional title. But he saw the potential of his team earlier in the season. ‘‘When we beat Mainland 5-0, that was huge,’’ said Kemery. ‘‘I knew we had something special then.’’ Efforts such as those have earned Kemery the title of 2011 boys’ tennis Coach of the Year honors. ‘‘It’s not about me,’’ said Kemery. ‘‘I just want the kids to have fun, play their style, and play it together for each other.’’ Third-singles junior Andy Glass, pointed to the Kemery’s attitude as the reason for the team’s success. ‘‘When the season started, he told us that on paper we weren’t expected to do anything,’’ said Glass. ‘‘He told us it was up to us if we wanted to be great. ‘‘More importantly, he never put any pressure on us.’’ Kemery agreed that pressure, and hands-on coaching, is not what he is all about. ‘‘I want them to do their homework, don’t look at the opponent, look at the numbers,’’ he said. The veteran coached showed his kids a simple system that reveals just how beatable are the best tennis players. ‘‘It’s all mathematics,’’ said Kemery. ‘‘Just look at the numbers, have fun, do what you do best, take pride in your game, and you’ll be fine.’’ ‘‘He did his homework, which allowed us to be more prepared,’’ said junior first doubles player Brady Akman. ‘‘He knows what we do best. A lot of coaches will try and manufacture a player into what they need, but not him. ‘‘He doesn’t try and change our games. He just works on our strengths and lets them shine.’’

SHANE MONROE St. Augustine Player of the Year

Courier-Post Staff There are plenty of talented tennis players to watch in the South Jersey area, and then there is Shane Monroe. The freshman phenom from St. Augustine is easily the best player the area has seen in a long time, according to head coach Sam Miles. ‘‘I believe he is the best,’’ said Miles, ‘‘I have no doubt that he can beat anyone in the state.’’ Monroe was a highly touted prospect who exceeded expectations, going 39-1 with his only loss coming in the NJSIAA State Singles Tournament final. Not only was it Monroe’s first loss, but it was the only time he allowed a match to go three sets. It’s that kind of talent that’s made Monroe the Courier-Post 2011 boys’ tennis Player of the Year. ‘‘It feels great,’’ said Monroe. ‘‘I just want to be the best.’’ Monroe has been the among the best since seventh grade, when he started beating some of the top high school players in the area while making weekend trips to the John McEnroe Tennis Academy in New York City. ‘‘I have always played tennis, but I didn’t really commit to it until I was 12 years old,’’ said Monroe, ‘‘When I was beating high school players then, I knew high school wouldn’t be much trouble for me.’’

Not only did he defeat all of his South Jersey opposition, but his one loss in the state tournament was caused by heat exhaustion. ‘‘I was winning the match easily, but I started to feel something different,’’ said Monroe. ‘‘Something wasn’t right — whether it was the heat or the humidity, I felt nauseous and should have retired.’’ ‘‘He was winning easily but the heat got to him,’’ agreed Miles, ‘‘If I know Shane, he has already began training for that scenario. ‘‘He will never let that happen again.’’ Coincidentally, Monroe has since been training on the beach to make sure the heat is never a factor again.
‘‘I train harder and longer than any of the kids around here,’’ said Monroe, ‘‘I want to get better and I want to win bigger tournaments.’’ Aside from an amazing run in the State Singles tourney, Monroe captured the Cape-Atlantic Singles Championship and was crowned champion at the South Jersey Open. ‘‘A lot of times I know that if I play my game I will win,’’ said Monroe, ‘‘Tennis has just come natural to me, and my experiences have helped me polish my game.’’ As a coach, Miles couldn’t get over how nice it was to have a kid as good as Monroe on his team. ‘‘It’s fun because I never had to worry about him,’’ said Miles, ‘‘He would be down 0-40 and still win.’’ ‘‘I am used to it I guess,’’ said Monroe about his comebacks. ‘‘It’s something that you can’t teach. I try and stay calm and don’t let the other guy see my real reactions. ‘‘Inside I am questioning myself, but outside I am calm, and I start playing harder.’’ No matter how he goes about it, the results are undeniable. ‘‘He has it all — size, stamina, and a cool head,’’ said Miles, ‘‘He is a player that wants to win and has every stroke in the world to do so.’’ ‘‘I have never seen someone like him before in my life.’’

After the final match of the 2011 season, when Clearview defeated Gloucester Catholic 152-168 at Beckett Golf Club, the players on coach Dan Lafferty’s team turned the tables on him. On the bus before each match, Lafferty opens a box of Titleist Pro VI golf balls and carefully rolls one ball from the front of the bus, under the seats, back to each of his players. With that May 19 victory, the Pioneers completed a perfect season at 20-0. Afterward, each player initialed one of the Pro VIs and one of them rolled the signed ball into the waiting hands of Lafferty, the Courier-Post’s 2011 High School Golf Coach of the Year. ‘‘I felt really confident that any day, I could send my team out there and we could put together four strong scores,’’ said Lafferty. ‘‘It just worked.’’ For Lafferty’s players, the momentous victory came at Pitman Golf Club when Clearview beat Woodstown 152-158, May 12, to improve to 18-0 and hand Woodstown its only loss. It was clearly not just another regular season match. ‘‘The kids were saying you could cut the tension with a knife,’’ said Lafferty, who improved his career coaching record to 35-5 after two seasons. ‘‘Usually they’re jovial and joking around before a match. Both teams knew what it meant. For us, it was the match of the year.’’ ‘‘It was very tense,’’ said Clearview senior Frank Rohrman, a three-year letterwinner. ‘‘Coach tried to act like it was any other match. We got on the bus, he got the balls out and rolled them and told us as long as we play to our averages, we’ll do OK. He kept us calm and focused.’’ ‘‘When coach rolls the balls to us, it takes our mind off the match for a minute,’’ said sophomore Austin Kohler, whose hole-in-one on April 8 in Clearview’s second match of the season proved a harbinger of things to come. ‘‘That tradition just makes it less serious, less stressful. It feels like we’re just going out and playing on a Sunday.’’ According to senior Nick Chilelli, it was fellow senior Kevin Hackenbrack’s idea to flip the script on their coach after the final win. It was a meaningful roll. ‘‘That signified us moving on,’’ said Chilelli. ‘‘When we rolled that ball back to him, it was a sign of respect. We were showing our appreciation and wishing him good luck. ‘‘It was a great season and to come out in your second year as a coach, go 20-0 and be Tri-County Royal Division champs, he did it. Courier-Post Staff Step onto the golf course with Louis Kelly and he has only one intention — he wants to destroy you. And he usually does. The 2011 Courier-Post Golfer of the Year, Kelly picked up two 18-hole tournament victories this season at Gloucester County Institute of Technology. One of those two wins was the annual Carl Arena/Al Rifkin Memorial Tournament, held for the first time at Ron Jaworski’s RiverWinds Golf & Tennis Club in West Deptford. Winning the event was on his to-do list since he started golfing in high school as a freshman in the spring of 2008. And when Louis Kelly gets it in his head that he’s doing something, you can rest assured, he’s doing it. ‘‘I know he really wanted to win the Arena,’’ said GCIT coach Chris Sedgwick. ‘‘His mindset from match play to tournaments, he can turn it on like nobody’s business. He gets so focused. It’s amazing how he turns it on. The whole change of mind, the change of attitude. He’s so consistent. In every tournament we go to, you just know he’s going to compete.’’ And he certainly had to compete back on the first
Thursday of May as he and Alex Hicks of Middle Township battled each other, the course, and a blustery wind to each shoot a 3-over-par 75. Kelly then won the tournament on the second playoff hole after Hicks nailed lengthy putts over 25 feet on the 18th and the first playoff hole to remain alive. ‘‘Alex made those two long putts but I always expect my opponents to make those shots,’’ said Kelly, who was named his school’s athlete of the year this spring. ‘‘I expect the worst scenario because I’m very focused. . . I’m trying to win out there. ‘‘They were probably the two most clutch holes I played this season and that’s the biggest tournament in the area against one of the best players in the state,’’ Kelly said of his Arena playoff performance. Winning the Arena started Kelly’s quest of winning all six 18-hole tournaments he’d play this season and although he fell short of that lofty goal, he still managed to win his second consecutive Gloucester County Open title. He also qualified for the state tournament for the fourth straight season, finishing in a tie for fourth at the South/Central Jersey Group 2 Sectional thanks to a birdie on his final hole. At the state finals and Tournament of Champions,
Kelly shot a 79 to place eighth in Group 2. And in the Tri-County Conference Tournament, his putting touch left him and he finished in a tie for sixth at 83. The sixth tournament Kelly planned to play in — the New Jersey Technical School Tournament which he won last year — was postponed. On two occasions, Kelly carded a school-record 32 in nine-hole dual matches, doing so on April 18 in a 170-209 win over Deptford and again on May 11 in a 166-185 win over Deptford, both at par-35 Pitman. ‘‘I still think I accomplished what I wanted to accomplish, except winning a state title,’’ said Kelly, who actually does own a state title, just not a high school crown. He won the New Jersey Junior Amateur title last summer. He’ll next pursue collegiate golf — verbally committed to Adelphi University — as he chases his dream of playing on the pro tour some day. ‘‘He’s easily the most accomplished athlete in the school’s history,’’ Sedgwick said. ‘‘Everything that he’s accomplished — winning the team Group 1 state title in 2008, he’s won every single tournament except the TOC. What makes him who he is is his family. They’re on top of it. They don’t stress sports, they stress academ-
