Welcome From the Honorary Chair

I

t is my pleasure to serve as Honorary Chair for the 2016 County College of Morris Foundation Gala.

This year’s Gala is again raising funds for scholarships at CCM, and also recognizing the leadership and many contributions that Dr. Edward J. Yaw has made to CCM, higher education throughout our state, and to the quality of life in Morris County. It has been my pleasure to know and work with Dr. Yaw over the last decade. He has been a trusted member of our board of directors at the Morris County Chamber of Commerce and an active participant in the business life of the county. He has lent his time, talents and energies to a number of worthy organizations, including the Urban League of Morris County, the Morris County Human Relations Commission, the Morris-Sussex-Warren Counties Workforce Investment Board and Dover General Hospital. Earlier this year, it was our pleasure at the Chamber to bestow on Dr. Yaw the annual Huber Award, which is named for community leader William Huber and is presented each year to an individual who has exhibited outstanding community leadership and has truly made our county a better place to live and work. It has become commonplace to speak of certain individuals as “living legends” and “irreplaceable,” but in the case of Ed Yaw that is not hyperbole. Through his inspired leadership, County College of Morris has become one of our state’s leading institutions of higher learning and a strategic resource for our county and state. On behalf of the Morris County Chamber of Commerce and our more than 880 members, I want to extend our thanks, gratitude and congratulations to Dr. Yaw for a job well done. We will forever be in your debt.

to the 2016 County College of Morris Foundation Scholarship Gala. We thank you for supporting this event. Each year, our Gala affords the opportunity to gather together, enjoy great dining, music, dancing and camaraderie. But it is also critically important in raising funds for our scholarship program – a program that enables some 250 students each year to “start right” at CCM. With the cost of college tuition rising each year – even at community colleges – your support is critical in enabling many of our students to achieve their dream of a college education and a productive future. County College of Morris is so much more than just a college. It is an integral part of the life, culture and economy of Morris County. While providing outstanding, affordable education, CCM continues to serve as a hub for professional training and business outreach, a home for the performing arts, and a facility that is often utilized by the county’s political and non-profit community. One could not imagine Morris County without CCM.

Our annual Gala is an opportunity to celebrate and showcase the best of our college. Tonight, we honor our retiring president, Dr. Edward J. Yaw, with the Foundation’s 2016 Leadership Award. Dr. Yaw, who will be stepping down in August after 30 years, is one of our state’s most admired leaders. He has left a mark – not only on CCM but on our state’s educational community – and his impact will be felt for years. CCM – and three generations of our students – will be forever in his debt. We also congratulate tonight’s Alumni Award recipients. Our thanks to the Foundation board, the Foundation staff and everyone on the 2016 Gala Committee who worked so hard to put tonight’s event together. And thank you for your continued support of one of Morris County’s great institutions – County College of Morris.

2016 Leadership Award Recipient Dr. Edward J. Yaw President County College of Morris

D

r. Edward J. Yaw joined CCM in 1980 and became president in 1986. In his more than three decades of service, he has guided CCM to its current status as one of New Jersey’s premier community colleges. He has been elected to various professional and educational councils, including serving as chair of the New Jersey Presidents’ Council and was a member of the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education. He has led accreditation-evaluation teams on behalf of the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association. In addition to guiding CCM, Dr. Yaw also has played an instrumental role in shaping higher education in New Jersey through his work on professional and educational councils. An active community leader, he has served on the boards of numerous organizations, including the Morris County Chamber of Commerce and the Urban League of Morris County, offering his time and expertise to improving the lives of others. Dr. Yaw earned his Ed.D. from Columbia University, his M.S. from Southern Illinois University, and his B.A. degree from Harpur College, SUNY Binghamton. Prior to his appointment as CCM’s President, Dr. Yaw held the position of dean of Academic Affairs. He had previously served as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for Adelphi University, NY. Dr. Yaw’s recent honors include the Phi Theta Kappa Michael Bennett Lifetime Achievement Award (2016), the Patriots Path Boy Scouts Association Toast to Scouting Award (2016), the Morris County Chamber of Commerce Huber Award for Outstanding Community Leadership (2016), the NJEDge Charles McMickle Award for Excellence and Innovation (2015), the Chabad Center of Northwest New Jersey Man of the Year Award (2014) and Fulbright Scholar, Community College Administrators Seminar, Russia (2013).

Alumnus of the Year Michael Klinger ’03, who earned an AA degree in Humanities/ Social Sciences at CCM, is an Associate in the Capital Markets Group at Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP, one of the nation’s oldest law firms. Michael first joined the firm in the summer of 2012 as a Cadwalader Public Interest Fellow, and then returned to the firm in September 2014 following his graduation from Harvard Law School. Cadwalader’s clients include many of the world’s leading financial institutions, corporations, health care and charitable organizations, government agencies, and private individuals. Michael practices in the area of asset securitization and finance, representing issuers and underwriters in securities and financing transactions. His primary responsibilities include drafting multi-party contracts governing the sales of commercial securities, negotiating asset disclosures between clients and origination counsel, and facilitating deal closures. In addition, Cadwalader has recognized Michael for excellence in his pro bono practice, which includes representing families of 9/11 First Responders, and his service on the Phoenix House New York Board of Directors. Michael graduated from the Harvard Divinity School in 2011 with a Master of Divinity in Buddhist Studies, with a special concentration in Social Justice Advocacy. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Cornell University in 2006. Being of service to others has long been a guiding principle for Michael, one that took him into maximum security prisons as an undergraduate volunteer teaching assistant, and led to a decade of volunteer work with Phoenix House, helping New York City’s underserved populations overcome substance and alcohol abuse. These experiences converged in 2006 when Michael was awarded a New York City Coro Fellowship in Public Affairs, comprised of a nine-month, graduate-level study in leadership, public service and civic engagement, with a special focus on public policy. The Coro Fellowship connected Michael to the Innocence Project, a national organization that exonerates the wrongly convicted through DNA testing . At the conclusion of his Coro Fellowship, Michael joined the Innocence Project fulltime as the Innocence Project’s policy associate, where he supported the Policy Department’s efforts to reform the criminal justice system through impact litigation and legislative initiatives. Michael’s experience with the Coro Fellowship and the Innocence Project led to a shift in his academic curiosity and vocational interests. That shift, followed by a chance meeting with a friend, ignited an interest in the Harvard Divinity School (HDS), where Michael furthered his commitment to service in the context of spiritual leadership, while preparing for a career in public interest law and positive social change. At HDS, Michael started a student organization called the HDS Innocence Project Engagement Group committed to raising awareness about the causes and consequences of wrongful convictions, and engaging in local and national reform efforts to prevent such injustices from happening in the future. From HDS, Michael united his commitment to service with his legal education at Harvard Law School. At Harvard Law School, Michael collaborated with the Criminal Justice Institute and The Harvard Prison Studies Project to organize events featuring exonerated individuals and their families. His clinical work included representing indigent clients in Boston as a public defender through the Criminal Justice Institute, and representing indigent clients on death row in Texas, where he worked for the Texas Defender Service through the Capital Punishment Clinic.

Michael’s commitment to service has been recognized with several awards. Harvard Law School honored Michael with the William J. Stuntz Memorial Award for Justice, Human Dignity and Compassion. The Stuntz award recognizes a graduating student who has demonstrated an exemplary commitment to the principles of justice, human dignity and compassion. He was also the recipient of the Jennifer Loren Herskowitz ’88 Cornell Tradition Point of Light Award that is conferred on an alumnus who has forwarded The Cornell Tradition message through extraordinary community service. During his years at CCM Michael served as the Public Relations Officer for Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and as a staff editor and contributing writer to both The Promethean and The Youngtown Edition. Michael also represented CCM as a Student Trustee on the United Way of Morris County’s Board of Trustees. In 2002, Michael was awarded a Governor’s Proclamation for academic excellence and community service. Michael also received the CCM Foundation Scholarship, and was awarded the George P. Snow Honors Scholarship in 2003. Michael accepts today’s award as an expression of gratitude for all of his CCM professors and mentors, who he credits with transforming his life through their course instruction, academic counsel, and belief in his abilities to succeed. In particular, Michael wishes to thank Dr. Cliff L. Wood for his enduring guidance and support, Professor Laura Gabrielsen for teaching him how to think and read critically, and Dr. Edward J. Yaw for his decades-long commitment to ensuring CCM’s educational opportunities are second to none. Michael congratulates all of this year’s CCM Alumni Honorees, with special thanks to Matthew Roche for his years of friendship and encouragement, from CCM to Cornell and beyond. Michael extends his gratitude to his wife Valentina for all her patience and support during his years of graduate study, and his parents Arlen and Eleanor Klinger for, well, everything. In closing, Michael dedicates this award to the memory of Professor Andrew Downie, with whom Michael’s educational journey began, and will forever continue.

Alumni Achievement Award Holly Lusardi ’07, who earned an AAS degree in Computer Science at CCM, is currently employed by Universal Technical Resource Services, Inc. (UTRS) as a software engineer for the Department of Defense at Picatinny Arsenal. In this role, Holly is responsible for designing, coding and testing software modifications for multiple applications using various software languages; the analysis and design of databases and user interfaces; data conversion and database administration; and defining and generating management reports. Holly’s colleagues rely on both her solid understanding of business requirements and her ability to translate them into technical designs, along with her experience in database design, implementation and management. Prior to joining UTRS, Holly held various positions as a Programmer Analyst, MS Office Instructor, Business Analyst and Senior Systems Engineer.

In 2014, she was the keynote speaker at CCM’s 20th Annual Women Who Dare conference, where she addressed 200 high school females on job prospects in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields. On other occasions, she has also spoken to students about career opportunities in the field of computer science. In addition, Holly has been a member of CCM’s Information Technologies Advisory Committee since 2012, and participated along with faculty and alumni on the C4 College Completion panel.

Alumni Humanitarian Award Matthew Roche ’03 is a Research Specialist in the Division of Schizophrenia Research at Rutgers University where his research interest lies in using the methods of experimental psychopathology and clinical cognitive neuroscience to understand the etiology and development of schizophrenia. After graduating from CCM with an AA in Humanities/ Social Sciences, Matthew earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Development in 2005 from Cornell University. After his graduation from Cornell, he became a research assistant at Princeton, where he studied Asperger syndrome. The experience led to his acceptance into the doctoral program at Binghamton University, where he researched individuals at-risk for the development of schizophrenia. He graduated from Binghamton University with a Ph.D in Clinical Psychology in 2012. He completed his pre-doctoral internship on the Division of Schizophrenia Research track in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey – Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. As an NIH INSPIRE Fellow there, he held appointments in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Division of Schizophrenia Research. His post-doctoral fellowship was aimed at developing research scientists as effective teachers for minority-serving institutions. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Division of Schizophrenia Research at Rutgers University, and is currently a Research Specialist in the Division there.

2016 Scholarship Representative Mirella Quintana ‘16 Business Administration

E

ach year, the County College of Morris Foundation selects one student to represent the more than 200 who have received scholarships during the current academic year. In doing so, the Foundation wants you to get to know that student, hear his/her story, and understand the life-changing effects that your gift to the Foundation can have on the life of a student. Born in Peru, Mirella Quintana came to the United States at the age of seven, needing to learn a new language and continue her education in a wondrous but strange new country. Driven by her desire to eventually succeed in the world of business, Mirella was accepted into the Academy for Finance and International Business at the Morris County School of Technology. At the age of 17, she interned with DoSomething.org, America’s largest non-profit organization for youth. That experience inspired Mirella to combine business expertise with philanthropy and eventually form her own non-profit organization. After graduating from CCM this month, she intends to pursue a bachelor’s degree in finance at a four-year college and continue her work helping underprivileged children and families in her native Peru. Mirella is the recipient of both the David Rossnagel Memorial Scholarship and the Oliver Sheffield Minority Student Scholarship. Her journey and aspirations reflect those of the hundreds of her fellow CCM students who are assisted and inspired by the generosity of our donors. On behalf of all of them, thank you.

The same high-quality education as the “elite” schools… at half the price. Generations of success stories have had their start at County College of Morris (CCM). The same imagination and innovation that drive the quest to succeed at top-tiered schools can also be found here. But you’ll have to go elsewhere if you want to find high prices – because an education that starts at CCM can be had for half the cost of other schools.
