Fall/Winter 2017-18 Greetings from the Foundation: Each September, there is a palpable sense of excitement and anticipation for the new academic year. New students are finding their way around campus and settling in to the next chapter of their lives; returning students are walking the halls with heads held high with the promise of another year of achievement; and our faculty begin their year with the extraordinary responsibility of guiding the students towards academic success and eventually,

success in their chosen paths and careers. The County College of Morris Foundation is fortunate to witness all that the new school year brings on campus and we remain steadfast in our purpose to raise funds that will allow the college to maintain the highest quality of academic excellence for our students. And in this light, we have begun laying the groundwork for the College’s 50th Anniversary in 2018. As we reflect on the past 50 years and prepare for what’s ahead, we focus on a commitment to strengthen and enrich our com-

munities through partnerships, economic growth and to pioneer innovative approaches to learning for our students. In this issue of our newsletter you will meet two of those students, both scholarship recipients who are able to attend CCM because of your confidence in the past and the future of the college. We extend our gratitude to all who have remained committed to the work of the Foundation and provided the College with significant philanthropic investments over this past year. We also offer our very best to Joseph Vitale, immediate past president of the Foundation.

As Vitale leaves the Foundation and pursues new opportunities, we thank him for his years of service and wish him well as he begins his new journey in life. The 2017-18 school year is filled with promise. We look forward to experiencing with you all that CCM has to offer our students, our faculty, our families and our community. For all you have done and continue to do, thank you!

JCP&L Supports Science Education for Women: Jersey Central Power and Light presented the CCM Foundation $2,500 for the annual Women Who Dare conference. Now in its 23rd year, the event brings together more than 200 female high school students from Bergen, Essex, Morris, Passaic, Sussex and Warren counties to spend a day at the college, hear lectures by CCM female faculty, tour our science facilities (including the new biology and nursing labs) and learn about career opportunities for women in science. The event is part of the college’s ongoing efforts to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education for women. This year’s keynote speaker (pictured center) was Dr. Cathryn Clary, chief medical officer of Novartis and a member of the CCM Foundation board.

The Gene Haas Foundation Supports Student Scholarships at CCM The Gene Haas Foundation has awarded a $10,000 grant for the 2017-18 academic year to support scholarships and National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) credentialing for County College of Morris (CCM) students enrolled in machine-based training and/or an engineering program.

Since 2015, the Haas Foundation has provided grants totaling $40,000 to CCM. The grants have funded scholarships for four female students in the Mechanical Engineer Technology Program at the college.

Rosenberg was an active member of the Women in STEM Club at CCM and led a project building prosthetic hands to donate to children in need. Two prosthetic hands were donated recently to a hospital in Brazil to recipients in a rural area.

The first scholarship recipient, Luisa Palacio-Zapata, of Mine Hill, was born in Columbia and came to the US as a child, inspired by her aunt to become an engineer. Kathryn DiPietro, of Sussex, the second scholarship recipient, majors in both Mechanical Engineering Technology and Engineering Science and hopes to use engineering to improve the lives of others. She has been an active member in the CCM engineering labs, conducting an independent

Ridings graduated this past spring with an Applied Associate of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology. She worked as a student aide in the materials testing and prototyping labs and played a significant role in setting up tooling and fixtures for parts in the NASA HUNCH program, which allows high school students to work on projects for the International Space Station.

Why I Give to CCM Name: Trish Colucci, RN-BC, CCM ’85 Profession: Certified Geriatric Care Manager Aging Life Care Professional Peace Aging Care Experts, LLC

What do you like most about your career? I love being a geriatric care manager because it blends two passions of mine – the science of nursing and the rewards of caregiving. As a business owner, mentoring and developing the nurses and social workers on our staff is both professionally challenging and rewarding. What do you value most about your CCM experience? The education, experience, support, and encouragement I received in the Nursing program. What is your favorite CCM Memory? After nursing students have graduated, the CCM nursing program holds a “Pinning Ceremony.” Unique to the nursing program, this tradition is an intimate ceremony during which the newly minted nurses are presented with a CCM Nursing Pin as a symbol of their commitment to becoming Registered Nurses. Students invite their loved ones to attend this event to show their support. It was an emotional and special not only for me but for my parents, as well.

Investors Supports Arts Education: Investors Bank, sponsors $5,000 to CCM’s annual Teen Arts Day. Now in its 32 year, the event promotes and develops the talents of middle- and high-school student artists in dance, theater, film, instrumental and vocal music, creative writing and the visual arts. This year, more than 1,000 students performed, exhibited or participated in workshops designed to promote individual talent. Over 50 professional artists from both the CCM faculty and the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area provided critical reviews of the students’ works and conducted workshops for the attendees.

Why do you give to CCM? I admire the CCM Nursing program and I appreciate all it did for me and for my career. I established the Peace Aging Care Experts, LLC Small Business Scholarship to ease other nursing students’ paths by providing financial assistance. I hope the recipients of the Peace Aging Care Experts, LLC scholarship know that along with the financial assistance, I am also offering my encouragement and support!
