Fly across Lake Wakatipu and land at Lake Quill at the foot of the 1,500 ft Sutherland Falls. View McKinnon Pass on your way to Milford Sound and follow the fiord out to the Tasman Sea and along the coastline. Day 6 Owen River Lodge The top of the South Island has the best sighted trout fishery in the world and Owen River Lodge is located right in the middle of the region. This very special location allows an enormous choice and variety of rivers, streams and lakes to fish, with over 25 rivers and streams within a 90-minute drive. The Lodge’s experienced fishing guides are all local kiwis and members of the New Zealand Professional Fishing Guides Association.

Day 3-5

Owen River/Grasmere Lodge Drive to Arthur’s Pass National Park (284km/ 3.5 hours) and check into Grasmere Lodge. (B, D) Grasmere Lodge The main homestead and the surrounding mountains are steeped in the history of Grasmere. The old building is one of the highest and longest-inhabited in the high country, although it has been enlarged and altered over the years. Trout fishing in the Canterbury high country is exceptional.

The next three days are spent fly fishing. You will have the use of fly fishing equipment and accompaniment of one of the Lodge’s expert senior fly fishing guides. There are also plenty of non-fishing activities such as massage and spa, mountain biking, hikes and walks, farm tours, rafting and others. (B, L, D)

Christchurch Avon River Christchurch is known as the Garden City. The Botanic Gardens inside Hagley Park boast a large collection of both native and exotic plants. Hire a punt and discover the gardens as you glide along the Avon River.

Day 2

Christchurch/Owen River Drive north towards Kaikoura and Picton, before turning off the main highway towards Hanmer Springs and the West Coast. This route will take you over the Lewis Pass. Follow the signs to Murchison and the Lodge is about 20km away. Check into the lodge for 4 nights’ stay (Driving distance: 311km, 4 hours). (B, D)

Today start with a walk around a nearby kettle lake created by retreating glaciers long ago, but now rimmed by lush forest. Continue driving through the Haast Pass on your way to Queenstown. Dense rainforests give way to the mountains of Mt Aspiring National Park as you enter the Otago region. Pause at Lake Wanaka, then cross the Crown Range and descend into Queenstown on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. (381 km/ 5.5 hours) (B)

Today, take the Routeburn Track (Nov-Apr only) in Mt Aspiring National Park. Start your walk on a smooth track 6km to Routeburn Flats. Spend time by the river and have lunch in an alpine meadow or continue further up the more challenging section of the track to lunch at Routeburn Falls Lodge. Those who climb to Routeburn Falls are rewarded with spectacular views and the comfort of the lodge. (B)

Take a walk or mountain bike on one of the many trails, go canoeing on the lake or take an hour-long tour of the farm with the owner/manager. Optional activities include horse riding, guided walks, guided fishing and spa. (B, D)

After breakfast, embark on your Milford Sound heliflight experience. Fly across the Southern Alps and into Fiordland National Park where mountains, fiords, rain forests, lakes and rivers will greet you. Nestled at the head of the Sound, land at Milford, and take time to enjoy this beautiful landscape before taking off again and flying down the Sound and out to the Tasman Sea, landing on a deserted beach on this wild coast, not accessible by any other means. Then return via the Harrison Valley to take in the beautiful glacial formations and land on the glacial ice. Continue driving through the Haast Pass on your way to Queenstown. Dense rainforests give way to the mountains of Mt Aspiring National Park as you enter the Otago region. Pause at Lake Wanaka, then cross the Crown Range and descend into Queenstown on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. (381 km/ 5.5 hours) (B)

Day 10

Queenstown Today, take the Routeburn Track (Nov-Apr only) in Mt Aspiring National Park. The walk starts with a smooth track 6km to Routeburn Flats. Spend time by the river and have lunch in an alpine meadow or continue further up the more challenging section of the track to lunch at Routeburn Falls Lodge. Those who climb to Routeburn Falls are rewarded with spectacular views and the comfort of the lodge. (B) Alternatively (at a supplement), replace the Routeburn track with one of the below: • Milford Track (Nov-Apr only) – enjoy the boat journey to the northern end of Lake Te Anau and the start of the Milford Track. Hike to historic Glade House where you may stop for lunch. Visit the small museum and continue your hike along Clinton River and to the top for a fantastic view of Lake Te Anau. • Milford Sound Fly/Cruise – fly through the spectacular alpine scenery. Once on the ground, embark on a scenic cruise on the full length of the fiord before returning to Queenstown airport by air.
