the Relay for life experience Cancer has touched everyone in some way or another in the community. To celebrate the survivors and remember the victims, Coshocton County will be having their 15th annual Relay for Life on Friday, May 14 Saturday, May 15. This 24-hour event begins at the Fairgrounds at 6 p.m. on Friday. Each year, the Relay for Life committee works long hours to make this event happen and to help raise money for the cure. There are 35 people on the committee, which help to plan the survivor banquet, write press releases for media, fundraising, sign up teams, and plan the event. “The committee is the glue that holds everything together,” said Kim Gress, co-chairperson of the event and cancer survivor, “and I have the best committee ever.” Although the committee has a lot of responsibilities, all members

are organized and committed to their work. This year’s goal is to raise $135,000, and the more than 50 teams have been hard at work with fundraising to reach that goal. Teams raise money throughout the year with various fundraisers including bake sales, car washes, selling candy bars, and the spaghetti dinner. The results of how much money raised will be announced during the event. “The whole process is unbelievable,” said Kim, “I’ve never been involved in anything where people are so committed.” Coshocton County is considered a Club Relay in Ohio. To be a Club Relay, each individual county in the state must raise at least $100,000. Coshocton County also has a phenomenal amount of committee members. Most counties only have four to ten people on their committee. Coshocton County has 35. Each Relay meeting in the county usually has up to 50 people in attendance. “I don’t think people in Coshocton County realize how special Coshocton County is,” said Kim. Relay for Life is about giving back to the community. Two local songwriters have written two original songs for this year’s Relay as well. “I like to give back to the community,” said Emily Kobel, cochairperson of the event, “It gives me that warm, fuzzy feeling because everyone is affected by cancer and the American Cancer Society has done so much. Who hasn’t been touched by cancer? Every year, they’re making advances, but it’s still here. It doesn’t know race, creed, or religion. It can take anyone.” “I’ve made friends who will last a lifetime because of the fun we’ve had through this whole Relay process,” said Kim. Emily also urges anyone who is not a part of Relay this year to come on down to the Fairgrounds anyway and see what it’s all about. She’s hoping that it might inspire you to get involved next year. Relay for Life will begin Friday, May 14 at 6 p.m. at the Fairgrounds and end Saturday, May 15 at 6 p.m.
