WARSAW – When The Warsaw Lions Club’s Minstrel Show will have a little country twang to it this year with their theme, “Lion Country”. A fun mix of country gospel, old country music with yodeling, and current country will highlight this year’s show, which will be Nov. 18 – 20 at River View High School. “We knew we wanted to go country because we haven’t done anything country in about 20 years,” said Jean Haumschild, director of the show. This year, there are 14 soloists and six chorus numbers, with a few “interruptions” interspersed throughout the performance. Friday’s and Saturday’s performance begins at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday’s show starts at 2:30 p.m. The River View Park Board will start serving a spaghetti dinner two and a half hours before the show begins each day. He’s probably the best catcher we’ve had at Coshocton High School.” Andrew’s mother Beth Walsh said he worked hard and sacrificed a lot to get where he is today. “He loves baseball and I love baseball,” she said. “I’m so excited he gets to keep playing. I have a younger one who will still be playing too so we will be traveling a lot, but it’s all worth it.” Brent, Andrew’s father, also was very proud of him and believes Ohio Dominican is a good fit for him. “He loves the Columbus area and it’s a great school where he will get a good education and be part of a fantastic baseball program,” Brent said. “It’s the perfect fit for him.”

COSHOCTON – Andrew Mason has known since seventh grade that he wanted to play baseball in college and recently took a big step in making that dream become a reality. On Nov. 9, the Coshocton High School senior signed his letter of intent to play baseball at Ohio Dominican University. “I love baseball and I wanted to take my talent to the next level,” Mason said. “I really like the coach at Ohio Dominican and the baseball program. I think I’ll fit in well there and the campus is close to Easton and Ohio State University.” He will catch for Ohio Dominican and plans to major in education. “I want to become a coach and hopefully come back here,” Mason said. He is very thankful for the support and guidance he’s received from coaches, Scott Loomis, Matt Hartmeyer and Jon Snider, his parents Brent (Lori) Mason and Beth (Bob) Walsh, his grandparents, the community and his teammates. “I’m going to miss playing at Lake Park,” Andrew said. “I love the field there. I’m also going to miss Coach Loomis, Hartmeyer and Snider and many of my teammates that aren’t graduating yet.” Loomis is very proud of Andrew. “Ohio Dominican is getting a baseball player who is passionate about the game and has the physique and

Grant application deadline approaching COSHOCTON - The deadline for grant applications for the next meeting of the Distribution Committee of the Coshocton Foundation is Friday, Jan. 6, 2017. Community organizations with a 501(c)(3) IRS non-profit designation and schools may submit grant applications for consideration by the committee, which will meet on Jan. 26, 2017. Join Connie Miller of the Roscoe Village Landscape Department on Saturday, Nov. 19 and make a pumpkin vase for a table centerpiece for your Thanksgiving meal. This will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. at The Lock Landing in the Roscoe Village Visitor Center. Cost is $5 for members and $8 for non-members.

VFW 1330 announces winners of contests
COSHOCTON – The VFW 1330 recently judged submissions for the Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen contest. The Voice of Democracy contest is for high school students and it was won by Grace Tolhurst from Dover High School. Placing second was Remi L. Mitchell from River View High School. The Patriot’s Pen contest was for junior high students and had 48 submissions.

RVHS to showcase boys’ basketball program By Jen Jones
WARSAW - The evening of Tuesday, Nov. 22 will be an exciting one at River View High School. For this one night, all of the boys’ junior high and high school basketball teams will be showcased. Starting at 5 p.m., the seventh grade team will take the floor and play for two quarters (about half an hour) and every half hour after, the next grade will show off their talents. West Holmes has agreed to bring their teams to River View and be part of the scrimmage. The varsity teams will play an entire game, not just two quarters. Josh Bowman, varsity coach of River View, said foundation games are a good way for the teams and coaches to see what they may need to work on and what skills are strong. It’s also a great way for the public to support the basketball program as this is used as a fundraiser. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for students. There will be a 50/50 drawing and a concession stand where all proceeds will go to the basketball program. Recognition of the youth basketball program (grades three through six) will also be held this evening. The event is a warm up to the varsity boys’ team season opener on Friday, Dec. 2 at home against Ridgewood.
Christmas trees sent to troops overseas REYNOLDSBURG – Military units stationed overseas will receive more than 100 trees in celebration of the holiday season as a result of the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s partnership with the Ohio Christmas Tree Association. The trees, donated by Christmas tree growers in Ohio, are inspected by department nursery inspectors to certify that they are free from pests and disease. The Ohio Christmas Tree Association has been delivering trees to troops stationed overseas since 1995. Growers have donated trees while local school children, churches and veteran’s groups have been

Fans cheer CHS on to second round playoff win
COSHOCTON - The CHS football team was sent off to its playoff game against Garaway on Nov. 12 by fans who greeted them downtown with balloons, signs and cheers. CHS ended up beating Garaway 23-20 and will now take on Wheelersburg High School who is 12-0. This Division V, Region 19 OHSAA football playoff game will be played at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at Athens High School R. Basil Rutter Field. Later this week, the OHSAA will announce how the regional champions in several divisions will be paired in the state semifinals Nov. 25-26. The regional championship pairings in some divi-
sions, however, will not be determined until after the regional finals this weekend. Note that state semifinal pairings are based on geography. Fifteen of the 28 total number one seeds advanced to the regional final. The playoffs began with 31 undefeated teams. Fifteen remain. Fans are encouraged to buy their playoff tickets in advance at the participating schools, which keep a percentage of the revenue. Roscoe announces Candlelighting ceremonies COSHOCTON - Guests visiting Roscoe Village for the Christmas Candlelightings on Dec. 3, 10 and 17 will have the opportunity to experience a truly old-fashioned Christmas. Each year, visitors gather around the stage in the center of Roscoe Village to witness the lighting of the 35-foot village Christmas tree while listening to a Christmas story and beautiful music. The Honorary Candlelighter lights his/her candle from the main candle on stage then passes the flame through the crowd as each guest joins in the singing of the first verse of Silent Night until everyone’s candle is glowing. The Candlelighting ceremonies begin at 6 p.m. and are free to the public. Parking is also free. A guided Christmas tour is
offered during each Candlelighting. New this year will be a handmade crafters’ event on Dec. 3 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. The crafters will display and/or demonstrate their homemade products in the Lock Landing, located at the bottom of the Visitor Center. NEW PHILADELPHIA - Kent State University at Tuscarawas has established Feb. 1 as the priority admissions application deadline, which positions applicants for earlier scholarship consideration. The date has been moved up from March 1. The Kent State Tuscarawas admissions application is online at www.kent.edu/tusc/apply. Students must be admitted to the university before being considered for scholarships. Kent State Tuscarawas awards approximately $300,000 in scholarships each year, with more than 250 students receiving scholarships this academic year. Scholarships, which are fund-

COSHOCTON – The Coshocton County Commissioners met with Holly Tucker, Ohio EPA Southeastern District Director to discuss the various programs offered by the agency to the 23 counties the district serves. Tucker had traveled to each of the 23 counties to address the main environmental concerns in each location. Commissioner Dane Shryock said that water quality was the first concern for most people in Coshocton County.

WARSAW – It was at 4 a.m. one morning when the administrative assistant, who wishes to remain anonymous, at Prairie Chapel United Methodist Church, believes she received a vision from God. “I think we were directed from God,” she said. “It was 4:00 in the morning. The baskets were there in front of me and this was it.” She saw a vision of bushel baskets in the shape of a cross at the altar of Prairie Chapel with non-perishable foods inside. She decided to make that vision a reality, but she never expected it to go as far as it did. “For a small church, people don’t think you do very much for the community, but our congregation has gone above what we expected,” she said. The original eight empty bushel baskets she put at the altar in the shape of a cross have now overflowed with non-perishable food items that were given to New Life Ministries food pantry this past Sunday. “The church usually helps the food pantry anyway,” she said. “Around the holidays, we try to do something a little extra. This year, we decided to do this for them and see how it went. I think it went very well.” The pastor challenged the kids at the church to bring in food items for the
basket and said he would match any and all contributions. Joe Shaw and Leonard Cognion of Prairie Chapel also said they would match contributions. “We try to impress on the kids that what sounds like little things can grow into big things and help someone else,” said Pastor Dail Parrish of Prairie Chapel. On Sunday morning, kids packed and loaded the food into a truck and delivered it to New Life Ministries. “I’m so excited that they’re so excited to help and not only that, they are getting the young people involved and that’s hard to do in this day and age,” said Pastor Mark Granger of New Life Ministries. The food also adds a bit of decoration to the church as well and reminds people to be thankful this Thanksgiving for all God has given them. “I’m very appreciative of what they are doing because it will bring in much-needed items,” said Granger. “I spend most of the food pantry money buying meat because that’s what people want. This will really help out because we are giving these out next Thursday right before Thanksgiving.” As of the end of October, $85,000 has been spent on the food pantry this year. “What they are doing is a tremendous help,” said Granger. “Because of their giving, people are getting items they don’t normally get.”

COSHOCTON – Adults weren’t the only ones voting on Election Day. Elementary students also were given the opportunity to see who their school would select as President of the United States if they were old enough to vote. Coshocton Elementary School’s mock election on Nov. 8 was run by the sixth graders. They’ve been learning about the democratic system in social studies and served as poll workers. “We thought this would be a great way to get the kids involved and get them excited about voting,” said Wendy Kimberley, sixth grade social studies teacher at Coshocton. All Coshocton elementary students had the option to vote and the teachers did their best to make the event as interesting as possible. Sixth grade teachers Wendy
Kimberley and Tim Ward dressed up as the presidential candidates and another teacher Michael McKee came to school decked out in his Americana fringed shirt. Keene Elementary also worked Election Day into its Right to Read Week activities. “All week we’ve been talking about freedoms and liberties,” said Tiffany Haines, a reading intervention specialist at the school who organized Right to Read Week. On Election Day all students in kindergarten through sixth grade were given the opportunity to come to the gym and vote. They voted for whom they think should be President of the United States and on fun topics such as their favorite school lunch, reward, spirit day, special class like music, physical education or art, and party day. After they voted they received official voter stickers that were donated from the board of elections. The students also made voter registration identification cards

Second grader Natalie Bradford was happy they got to participate in an election. “We aren’t allowed to vote since we aren’t 18, but we need a President who is good,” she said. Her classmates Taylor Brehm and Havanna Hinojosa said they learned about voting this week from the Dr. Seuss book “One Vote, Two Votes, I Vote, You Vote.” “It’s important to vote,” Brehm said. “We need a president for our country.” At Keene Donald Trump won the presidential election with 175 votes compared to Hillary Clinton’s 71. COSHOCTON - Todd Shroyer, director of Coshocton County Emergency Medical Service, was very relieved to see voters said yes to the EMS renewal levy that was on their Nov. 8 ballot. “I’m very appreciative,” he said. “We ran a low key campaign. We feel we make a difference and we hoped people did too.” Shroyer Unofficial results show that of the 14,704 people, who took the time to make a choice for the levy, 9,353 of them said yes to it and 5,351 said no. “We thank the voters for their support and thank Don Carpenter for agreeing to be our campaign treasurer,” Shroyer said. Coshocton County EMS asked registered voters in the entire county to renew its current 3.0 mill property tax that was last approved by them in 2012. The levy is for five years, tax years 2017 through 2021. It will generate approximately $2.2 million dollars per year and can only be used for operations and maintenance of the Emergency Medical Service. “We’ve tried really hard to hire people that are caring and show compassion and I think that has really helped us,” Shroyer said. “Emergency Medical Service is about caring. You’ve got to care.” In other levy news, the additional tax in White Eyes Township for road maintenance was turned down by voters. Five hundred and sixty-two cast their ballots with 341 of them being against the levy and 221 of them for it. Voters also turned down a Pike Township renewal levy that was for current expenses. Two hundred and fifty seven people cast ballots for this levy with 142 of them being against it and 115 of them for it. COSHOCTON – As the people of the United States had their eye on the 2016 presidential race, residents of Coshocton County also had a decision to make on the person who would fill the vacancy for the Clerk of Courts position at the courthouse, following the retirement of Janet Mosier on Dec. 31st. The contested race was between Jinni Bowman (D) and Camila Graham (R). Graham was ahead for the first round of results that were posted at the Coshocton County Board of Elections with a 775 lead over Bowman and was able to keep that momentum all night. “It feels great,” said Graham. “I feel very grateful and honored. I think it was a close race actually.”

Graham carried the lead throughout the night with a total of 8,759 votes against Bowman’s total votes of 5,676. “It was a good experience,” said Bowman. “I wouldn’t change anything. I went out and worked my tail off. I think it came down to the national election, and we are a very red county.” Graham said she wants to keep running the position very much like her predecessor, Janet Mosier. “I want to start scanning records,” she said. “I intend to continue running it as professionally and respectfully as it has been.” She said she is thankful for her friends and family for all their hard work and support. “Thank you to all my co-workers, friends, and family for all they’re hard work, encouragement, and help,” she said. “I couldn’t have done it without them.” In the presidential election, Coshocton County showed overwhelming support to Republican candidate, Donald Trump with a total of 10,381 votes compared to 3,908 votes for Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton. 0022_110916

Monday, Wednesday, and Friday between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Proceeds will go to the Warsaw Lions Club. “The Lions Club supports a lot of community activities,” said Haumschild. “They do a lot with River View High School and help out with all sorts of things within the school. In the community, they help out with Camp Echoing Hills and eyeglasses collection, which they are doing that night. They help anyone in the community who has a need.” Haumschild is hoping that people attending can relax and enjoy a night out with great entertainment.
“I think Nick (Fischer) put it best when he said, it’s local people entertaining local people,” said Haumschild. “Every year, I have people tell me they didn’t know there was so much talent in Coshocton County. It’s just a night where you can get away from anything that’s bothering you. Just go and relax.” Each year is like a big family reunion for all who participate. “For me, it’s a kind of homecoming,” said Haumschild. “We spend the first few practices catching up on everybody else’s life. It’s just a way that we can all get together and have fun and entertain people.”

COSHOCTON – Burn off those Thanksgiving calories ahead of time before the big feast at the Coshocton Turkey Trot 5K which will be at Lake Park on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, Nov. 24. Race day registration is from 7 – 7:45 a.m. and the race will begin at 8 a.m. Registration is $30 and so far, more than 30 people have pre-registered for the run. “It’s kind of crazy,” said Dustin Haywood, volunteer for the event. “We had 60 people the first year and 186 last year. We’re hoping to grow that number this year.” The run is hosted by AFG, a young adult’s ministry at New Life Ministries. All proceeds will go to their ministry. “We do Bible studies with the group,” said Melissa Harper, coordinator of the run. “”We give out to different minis-
tries we have a heart for and the money also goes to different activities we do in the group.” The top three finishers in each age group will receive a prize. Dean’s Jewelry is sponsoring the run again this year. “Typically across the country, there are Turkey Trots,” said Haywood. “There’s one in Granville and one in the Dover and New Philadelphia area, so people would have to drive about an hour to participate. We decided Coshocton needed one, so we created one.” Haywood, along with Kelly Treat, own DK Races & Events, LLC and will have another 5K run on Dec. 10 at 5 p.m. at the Canal Boat parking lot at Lake Park. Entitled Jingle Bell Jangle, it is a Christmas-themed night run that has Christmas lights and decorations along the running path.

COSHOCTON – About 10 years ago Dewey Thompson wanted to help put a positive spin on a change to the city’s hunting rules. He never imagined that his research would lead him to one of the most fulfilling ministries he’s ever been part of. “I was invited to be part of a committee to deal with urban deer damage,” Thompson said. “We convinced city council to strike one line from the rules that it was illegal to hunt in city limits.”
At this same time he also discovered Farmers & Hunters Feeding the Hungry. “We had to raise our own processing money (to have hunters take part in this) so Joe Miller (from Woodbury) and I each put in $250 each,” Thompson said. “I think we got 500 pounds of meat the first time. I delivered the meat to the Salvation Army the week before Christmas and just hours before that they had run out of beef. I just felt like something had happened there. The deer is then signed over to the local Farmers & Hunters Feeding the Hungry chapter which then pays the processing fees. After his first year with the program Thompson started soliciting donations to help cover processing fees. He even helped work out an arrangement with the Ohio Division of Wildlife who made $200,000 in matching funds available to Ohio chapters of Farmers & Hunters Feeding the Hungry.

“When deer bag limits were up around six we were getting 20,000 pounds or so of meat donated,” he said. Deer bag limits have since then dropped so for the past five years or so Thompson has worked with the junior fair auction to get more meat sent to Farmers & Hunters Feeding the Hungry. At the 2016 Coshocton County Junior Fair Auction 44 chickens, three ducks, 40 hogs, three lambs, nine turkey and nine rabbits were bought at the fair and donated to provide approximately 5,500 pounds of meat to those in need. Thompson also organizes the Tuscarawas County chapter of Farmers & Hunters Feeding the Hungry and received nearly 4,000 pounds of meat from its junior fair auction. He is able to direct who receives the meat and said in Coshocton County The Salvation Army, New Life Ministries and
Shepherd’s Christian Assembly have all benefited from the program. New Life Ministries also helps out financially with Farmers & Hunters Feeding the Hungry. “I think the mission where this has had the highest impact is Shepherd’s Christian Assembly,” Thompson said. “Some of the people that come in there to eat haven’t eaten for days.” He believes the Coshocton chapter of Farmers & Hunters Feeding the Hungry has processed more than 250,000 pounds of meat since its existence. Ohio’s traditional deer-gun hunting season begins Nov. 28 COLUMBUS, OH – Deer hunting is an extremely popular activity for sportsmen statewide, and Ohio’s white-tailed deer continue to provide hunters across the state with excellent opportunities for success as they head out into the field. WARSAW – When the Pizza Hut BOOK IT program challenged principals to beexamples for literacy Jarred Renner willingly accepted the challenge. Renner, the principal at Union Elementary School, worked with librarian Anne Larr to set up opportunities to read to the children on Nov. 9, which fell during National Young Readers Week. “The idea was to read to them (the students) in unusual places so they would see the principal read, be challenged to read and see different books,” Renner said. He wore different hats to go with the books and worked his way around to the classrooms and even surprised the students at lunch by reading to them from the cafeteria freezer. Larr made sure to snap photos of Renner reading so she could submit them for their chance to win Kate DiCamillo books for the entire school. If they win the challenge, each student in kindergarten through sixth grade will go home with their very own new book for winter break.

COSHOCTON - “The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood” promises to be a good laugh. “There’s a lot of slapstick humor in it and kids will enjoy it,” said Alex Burton. Burton is a senior at Coshocton High School where the theater club is putting the play on at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20, and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22 in McKinley Auditorium. There are 26 students in the play including Burton, who plays Robin Hood. “It’s a funny character and there are a lot of fourth wall breaks which is one of my favorite things to do,” he said. “I love talking to the audience. I also love practicing. Everyone works together to think of what we can do with scenes, but then I also love performing and trying to get our ideas across to the audience.” Kris Hardesty, theater director, said the cast and crew have been an absolute joy to work with. “I knew I had the students to do this play this year,” she said. “It’s very funny and they have the sense of humor for it. It’s the classic story of Robin Hood and his merry men, but with twits. Robin

in the spring and then an actors’ choice. “We work really hard to secure sponsors so any student who wants to can participate,” Hardesty said. “There is no pay to participate and no one has to come up with costume money.”
She also is proud to say that there are almost no adults helping backstage. “One of our seniors is the stage manager and calls the show,” Hardesty said. “We do have adults who help, but pretty much right down the line it’s all students. I always tell them it’s their club. I’m just here to advice them. This group is fantastic. They are extremely mature. They have a good sense of what they want to see and how to make it happen.” Stage manager Tara Brush has enjoyed her role with the production. “I was the stage manager last year too and I like how much it absorbs your life and all the time you spend here,” she said. “The play becomes part of your life.” Brush also is impressed with everyone’s creativity. “We have the ability to work with anything,” she said. “We have so little to work with back there, but we always come up with new sets and props.” Tickets for “The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood” are $5 for adults and $3 for students. “It’s a hilarious play,” Brush said. “When I read it, I laughed out loud.”
Salmans wins Miss Congeniality at Quarter Horse Congress By Jen Jones

Kaitlyn Salmans won the Miss Congeniality title at the Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus.
COSHOCTON - As if being a full time student at OSU studying poli-sci and history, preparing for law school and working part time isn’t enough, Kaitlyn Salmans took a week off of school to chase a dream she had had since she was a child. She was going to represent Eastern Ohio in the All American Quarter Horse Congress Queen contest in Columbus. Salmans started competing in horse shows as a 9-year-old in 4-H at the Coshocton County Fair. Throughout the last 11 years, she has worked her way up through horse shows and dreamed of competing for the queen title when she was 18. Her mom, Jackie, convinced her not to rush and now Salmans is glad she waited. “It was harder that I thought, but the experience was amazing. I met other young women who inspired me to be the best I can, but I also learned that I don’t have to be anyone but myself.” The competition included a short prepared speech and Kaitlyn said her mom pushed her to share her experiences riding and how passionate she is about competing. “My mom sat on the couch with me for hours, helping me decide what to write, memorizing my speech and just giving me confidence that I could do this,” she said. “My mom and dad (Jackie and Todd Salmans) are so supportive of my sister and I.” After her speech, the judges asked her questions. This was all part of the interview process and Kaitlyn said
she was a nervous wreck. “We went in alphabetical order, so I was the second one. My hands were shaking so much because this was the part I really wanted to do well in.” She ended up taking third in the interview and was very excited. “Public speaking isn’t my strong suit and this really gave me confidence in my ability.” The contest also included a written test, which she placed 10th in and an activity with her horse. The interview and test each made up 40 percent of the final score, while the horse activity was 20 percent. Jackie said she is so proud of her daughter. “She had to work really hard to be able to compete. She had to juggle classes, schoolwork, her job and spend a week with the other girls and the judges. Kaitlyn has wanted to compete in the queen contest since she was little.” The announcement that she had been picked as Miss Congeniality came as a complete shock to Kaitlyn. The judges and her peers chose her and she received a trophy, belt buckle and jacket as prizes. Miss Congeniality is based solely on personality and hers won over the judges and the other young women competing. Kaitlyn said the experience was exhausting, but magical, and was a dream come true. “I don’t think I’ll compete for queen again. I want to focus on school and preparing for law school. And I want to watch my sister, Tara, compete. I’m hoping to share my experience with her in a few years and watch her try for queen.”

I have told her she is the most important person on that committee.” Dotson said about Donaker, “Our next recipient has been involved with 4-H for many years. She has been a 4-H volunteer for eight years with the Hamilton Valley Hustlers 4-H Club; she has served as the 4-H dairy rep and also as a secretary of the 4-H Advisory Committee. She is a member of the auction committee for the past four years and has assumed the role of inputting the data into the computer program for the junior fair shows and for the livestock auction. She puts together all of the information needed to do the livestock auction books. She also stays well after the auction to help solve the mystery of the animals left in the barns. She puts in countless hours before, during and after the fair.” Coshocton County 4-H Educator Jenny Strickler concluded the evening and said,
“Thank you for all of the support and coming tonight to the leader’s banquet. All of you have such pride in this organization to place your valuable time giving back to it. We had 184 adult volunteers in 2016 serving 633 youth. The independent sector says that your volunteer hours are worth $22.06 per hour. Even at just the bare minimum of 4-H meetings, fair work, filling out paperwork, those mandatory trainings and helping youth with their project books, that’s over $243,000 dollars you have given back to your community in volunteer service and I’m sure that number is actually much higher based on your true number of hours of your volunteer service. Unfortunately, volunteers are not paid, not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless.”

School Events New Club: On Wednesday, Nov. 16, everyone is invited to Crowtown Pizza at 783 S. 2nd Street in Coshocton to support the new Astronomy Club from Coshocton High School. Members will be seating and serving the patrons from 5 - 8 p.m. hoping to raise money for this new club. Proceeds from this fund raiser will be used to sponsor a star party in the spring, where people can come together and gaze at the beautiful night sky while enjoying some fun games and competitions while learning about astronomy. CHILI- Residents of the Chili and surrounding area celebrated the repaving of more than six miles of County Road 10 in Coshocton County with pie and ice cream on Wednesday evening, Nov. 9. County officials, government officials, paving company representatives and residents attended to observe the second example of collaboration between the public and private sector in Coshocton County within the past year, County Road 12 was the first. The Coshocton County Commissioners were the recipients of several grants for the project with the Coshocton County Port Authority coordinating all of the funding. The Coshocton Foundation holds the funds. Other organizations involved were; Coshocton County Engineer’s Office, Frontier Power, OMEGA, ODOT, APEG 629, Ohio Public Works and NECCI Community Contribution. Small’s Paving did the paving. Coshocton County Commissioner D. Curtis Lee said, “This is very unusual. This is two years in a row that Dorothy (Skowrunski) and Fred (Wachtel) have worked together to do a public-private partnership and they involved the community both times. Both times the community has donated $125,000 to $150,000 and in two years we have had a quarter million dollars’ worth of buy-in from the community. “These are reimbursable grants that Dorothy found that she can apply for. The Commissioners pay the invoice and we are reimbursed for them. Dorothy and Fred have worked well together. Fred (County Engineer Fred Wachtel) has done the engineering and all of the
bid work. Dorothy (Port Authority Executive Director) has lined up all of the grants. “I never dreamed that last year they would be able to pull the grant off-it was late in the year-how they were able to find someone to actually do the paving and get the job done and get reimbursed was unbelievable. This year I believe they were ahead of the game on that and they made some provisions with Small’s (paving company) in case they got this grant. It’s unbelievable how they have all worked together. “This road would probably not be paved without this collaboration. Fred has an annual budget in the four to five million range and this is $800,000 worth last year and another $700,000 to $800,000 worth of paving this year. That is a large part of Fred’s budget and his budget is actually less than it was seven or eight years ago. He is funded through the gasoline tax and people are driving more fuel efficient vehicles. If we are not spending the money on fuel then he does not receive the money from the state. “Transportation is big for the industry in this area of Coshocton County. The other thing that we have to remember is that this grant money would not be available if it was not for the economic growth in this area. If it was not for all of the small businesses in this area turning out furniture and things like that these grants would not be available.” In his remarks at the community celebration, Coshocton County Engineer Fred Wachtel told the crowd, “Thank you once again for celebrating a project. Wow! I didn’t think we could do this again-to get all of the funding agencies together and make this happen. Thanks to the Port Authority, OMEGA, ODOT and everyone that
made this project possible. “We brought a number of funding agencies together to make this happen. This mirrored our County Road 10 project. We worked with Frontier Power and their Giraffe equipment to trim back the canopy. “We still have a little bit of work to do-in the spring we will put a chip ‘n seal on the road to finish it off. Between the two projects we have done over 12 ½ miles of road with over 21 tons of asphalt laid. It’s because of all the business in this area that we could make this work. The investment to date is almost 1.4 million dollars. It will be about 1.5 million when we’re done. “We now have a mechanism in place at The Coshocton Foundation with the Northeast Coshocton County Infrastructure Fund for contributions and bring funds back out for other projects in this area. “That was a stroke of genius to have that in place. “Now we’re working on trying to develop a Safe Route to School program. There are some programs available through ODOT to help develop some travel plans and also make some improvements to some of the roads and make them safer. We don’t need to encourage the kids in this area to walk to school-they already walk to school. But we have some real needs to make this a safer environment for kids walking to school.” Wachtel also talked about working with surrounding counties to form a coalition that would help with bike enthusiasts and pedestrians. “Maybe one of those bicyclists is looking for the goods, products and services that you offer. “Thank you for being a part of this project.”

Doug Berger and Glenn Hill were honored for their years of dedication to Ridgewood High School athletics at halftime of the Ridgewood vs Newcomerstown varsity football game on Oct. 28. CHS swim team holds pool party fundraiser By Jen Jones
COSHOCTON - The laughter and squeals of fun echoed off the walls around the Coshocton High School pool as the first group to attend the pool party enjoyed their time in the water. Held on Nov. 12, this was the first year for a fundraiser of this type and since it was such a success, it won’t be the last. “You can only do so many types of fundraisers – discount cards, pizza cards, candy – before you need to find something different. We thought since other sports do ‘biddy camps,’ we would open up our ‘playing field,’ too,” said Cari Weaver, coach of the swim team. “Plus, this allows the team to have some fun with the kids and shows them how important community is.”

Weaver also said this was a way to expose smaller children to the fun of swimming and perhaps spark an interest in them in pursuing swimming as a sport when they get to high school. “This is our rebuilding year,” Weaver said. “We lost four seniors last year and our team is really young. But they work hard and support each other.” Julie Uhl, whose son is on the swim team, suggested the idea and she wasn’t sure how well it would work. “Weekends are so busy, but I knew parents were always looking for fun things for their children to do. A pool party was one last chance to enjoy swimming for the year.”

-Julie Uhl the side of the pool, others were taking running jumps into the water. The teenagers kept a watchful eye on the children and made sure that everyone was having fun. A second pool party was held later in the afternoon for students in fourth through sixth grades. All of the money raised will go to the needs of the swim team, including meal stipends for away meets, expenses for sectionals (such as hotel rooms and meals) and equipment. If the smiles of the swimmers were any indication, the swim team has found the perfect annual fundraiser.

The swim team sold tickets before the pool party and had already sold more than 80 before the doors opened. Students could also buy tickets at the door. Families of the swim team members provided snacks for the children enjoying the water. COSHOCTON – Herb Tidrick was honored to speak at the Veterans Day ceremony on the court square, but he was quick to remind those in attendance that he wasn’t there to celebrate his retirement. He was there to honor all veterans. “Each and every veteran is special and each one has a story of their own,” he said. Tidrick, a U.S. Navy veteran, worked with the Coshocton County Veterans Service Office for 14 years and officially retired on Nov. 11, 2016. “I don’t know how many times I heard people say, ‘Dad never spoke about his time in the service,’” Tidrick said. “Sit down with them (the veterans in your life) and ask them questions. They are each an important part of our history. If they have pictures encourage them to show them to you. You’d be surprised by the information you get from them.”

When he was in the Navy, Tidrick was able to see many parts of the world and do things like see the Coliseum in Rome, tour 600 year old castles and climb Mt. Fuji, but still says his 14 years in the veterans service office were some of his best. “I changed lives for the better, I formed close relationships and I worked with people in dark times and good times,” Tidrick said. “I’ve lost some, but I’ll cherish many. Now it’s time for my family. We are here though to celebrate all veterans. It’s a day for them. Thank you.” Later in the service he received a plaque for his years of service and dedication to helping veterans in the community. “When I started working at the veterans service office seven years ago……..Herb told me you have to have a passion for this job,” said Jim Barstow, veterans service officer. No one is more passionate about helping than Herb.” Another speaker at the ceremony was Becky Bowden from the Blue Star Mothers Chapter OH #59 who shared how her group supports those who have children in the military and tries to spread patriotism in the community. “On behalf of the Blue Star Mothers I thank all of the veterans for their service to the United States of America and also Herb for his time with the veterans’ service office,” she said. “Without all of you we would not have the freedoms we now enjoy.” SEE VETERANS ON PAGE 39
