it’s the Relay Teams decision on whether they’d like to use “rock” literally or figuratively. The theme can relate to music, a rock or pebble, a rocking chair, or maybe a person can be your “rock”. However one chooses to interpret the theme it’s really up to them. It’s so fun to take a stroll around the track at the fairgrounds to see how the Relay Teams have chosen to decorate their campsites. Miss Relay 2010 Miss Relay is a beauty competition for the guys who aren’t afraid to go above and beyond for their team. They typically wear and display the team’s purse for the purse auction. However, you do not need a purse to enter Miss Relay. This event is all in fun. If any of the panel feels your Miss Relay Contestant is inappropriate, you will not be permitted to compete. This is family-friendly, so keep it G rated. Contact Jessie Tubbs with any questions at (740) 610-7433.

Purse Auction Saturday, May 14 The purse auction has been a great success over the last few years and this year, we expect the same. Each team is encouraged to put together a bag of items of value to be auctioned off following the Miss Relay Competition around Noon. The team does not need to participate in Miss Relay to have a purse auctioned off. Some of the purses in the past have been filled with gift certificates, jewelry, or beauty supplies. Others have been picnic baskets filled with plates, silverware, and snack foods. One team put together an incredible golf bag and another filled a diaper bag with handmade quilts and such. The possibilities are limitless and the money raised is added to your team’s total. Contact Jessie Tubbs if you have any questions at (74) 610-7433.

Grateful is key word at cancer survivors’ banquet

Pictured left is Lisa Murray, who chaired Thursday evening’s Cancer survivors’ banquet with husband Stan. Murray is shown with nine year old Gracee Robertson, who is the team captain of Relay team, “Kidz 4 a Cure”. Robertson said, “God told me I just really needed to do this so we can raise money for people that have cancer.”

Nearly 300 cancer survivors and their caregivers gathered at the Moose Lodge #935 on Main Street in Coshocton on Thursday evening, Apr. 28 to enjoy a baked ham dinner, special music and living. The common phrase heard uttered more than once was, “I’m grateful”. The event was organized by Lisa and Stan Murray and is the forerunner to this year’s Relay for Life event, which will be held at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds on Friday and Saturday, May 13 and 14. Volunteers from the Registered Nurses Association helped serve, clean tables, replenish beverages and give an uplifting smile. Wendy Bowman, who had her children helping as well, said, “We wouldn’t be anywhere else.” With the theme of this year’s Relay being “Rock for a Cure”, vinyl records hung from the ceiling, placemats looked like piano keyboards and music filled the air. Special music was provided by Barbara Moody, who sang

“Wind Beneath My Wings” and also performed “I Won’t Let Go”, a song made famous by Rascal Flatts. An emotional part of the evening was the playing of “The Edge”, on CD, a song written and sung by Coshocton’s own Dan Mitchell. Bill Moody also provided inspiration with his vocals and guitar. Following the music, a hearty round of applause was given to Don Freed and the staff at the Moose Lodge for the meal. Lisa Murray, who along with husband Stan, chaired the cancer survivor banquet, said, “Cancer runs strong in my family. My grandmother died of bone cancer, my great-aunt had stomach cancer and a great-aunt that had breast cancer. My mother had cervical cancer and my father died of throat cancer thirteen years ago. A lot of friends have had cancer so I feel that this is a good opportunity to get with the community to educate them on things and let them know that there are other people out there

like them. Don Freed shuts the lodge down for us from 4 to 8, the staff volunteered to help cook and serve. We support each other and thanks to the community for supporting us.” Chelsea Edwards, the American Cancer Society income development representative for Coshocton County, said, “I think this is amazing. The turnout is so impressive and it’s exciting to see all of these survivors together in one room.” Darlene Klein, who was diagnosed with cancer in February, 2010, and was told in April of this year that she is in remission, said, “I’m thankful that I can be here. It makes me realize how many people in this town are going through this. Benefits like this make us feel grateful for all that we have.” Klein said that she would be participating in this year’s Relay for Life. She added when asked why people should attend events like the dinner, “You feel like you’re all alone. Give it a chance, and come to this, you’re not alone, there all people that care for you and that are here for you. The community is very much supportive. I want to thank all of my family that’s stood by me and all my special friends. Never take anything for granted because you never know when it might be your last day.” Emily Kobel, who co-chairs this year’s Relay for Life along with Kim Gress, said, “It takes a lot of manpower and a lot of dedication. We just really want to make these people feel very special whether they’re a survivor or a caregiver. We want to recognize them and give them a nice meal and a nice program. Relay is coming up and we hope they all come out. Lisa (Murray) – her and Stan both, they have just run with it. It’s just a wonderful event. We relay for

And that’s what this is all about.” Jackie Mason, who was volunteering at the dinner with members of the Registered Nurses Association at Coshocton Hospital, said, “Because we want to give back to the community. This is one of our community service projects that we enjoy doing. This is close to my heart because of where I work (the Oncology department at Coshocton Hospital). I think this is an awesome event. It’s very well put together and well decorated. I think Lisa Murray did an excellent job.” Mrs. Nondis Bown, who is a fifty-five year cancer survivor, said, “I’m very grateful. This is just so wonderful that they do all of this for us. Thanks for a lovely evening.” She said she enjoys the Relay because, “It brings us all together.” Gracee Robertson, who is nine years old, and attends Ridgewood Elementary, is the youngest Relay for Life team captain. Her team name is “Kidz 4 a Cure”. She said, “God told me that I just really needed to do this so we can raise money for people that have cancer. My Grandma had cancer three times and has survived three times.” Currently there are seven people on the team, which has raised $1,100 towards a team goal of $2,000. Something special about Gracee is that she will be celebrating her birthday during the Relay, and she is asking people to donate any gift money to the Relay. She said, “All I want money for is to raise money to fight cancer.” The team had a car wash on May 7 at Auto Zone in Coshocton.

Entertainment Biographies Jody’s Dance Group Jody’s Dance is a dance studio in West Lafayette that began on a patio at the Ridgewood High School in 1973. Still going strong after all these years, we offer tap, jazz, hip hop, baton, gymnastics, and beginning ballet. The dancers learn to dance with the greatest focus being on the child’s spirit and confidence. The child can forget about the concerns of their hectic week for just a little bit and get lost in the fun of dance as they look forward to a Spring Recital. Thank you to the community for all your support.

What is Relay for Life? Fight Back – The Fight Back Ceremony

Last, there is a Fight Back Ceremony, where we make a personal commitment to save lives by taking up the fight against cancer. That personal commitment may be to do something as simple as getting a screening test, quitting smoking, or talking to elected officials about cancer. By taking action, people are personally taking steps to save lives and fight back against a disease that takes too much.

Relay starts with a Survivors Lap – a inspirational time when survivors are invited to circle the track together and help everyone celebrate the victories we’ve achieved over cancer. The Survivors Lap is an emotional example of how Relay participants are ensuring that more lives are saved each year – like those of each individual on the track. We also recognize and celebrate caregivers at Relay For Life. These individuals give their time, love, and support to friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers who face cancer. At Relay, people understand the frustrations and joys of being a caregiver, since the effects of cancer reach far beyond just the person diagnosed.

In honor of my sister Karin and my best friend Jo.

Fighting the Fight...

Coshocton County Relay for Life Program

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length. Relay began in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon in Tacoma, Washington, ran and walked around a track for 24 hours to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Since then, Relay has grown from a single man’s passion to fight cancer into the world’s largest movement to end the disease. Each year, more than 3.5 million people in 5,000 communities in the United States, along with additional communities in 20 other countries, gather to take part in this global phenomenon and raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer. Thanks to Relay participants, the American Cancer Society continues to save lives.

Rock for a Cure

Candles are lit inside bags filled with sand, each one bearing the name of a person touched by cancer, and participants often walk a lap in silence. As people take time to remember, those who have walked alongside others battling cancer can grieve and find healing. This is a time that truly highlights the importance of defeating this disease.
