2008 Coshocton County Relay for Life Program

Co-Chair’s Message As Co-Chair’s and on behalf of the 30 committee members of Coshocton County’s Relay for Life, we officially welcome you to the 2008 Relay. The Coshocton County community, while currently on a downturn economically, is making history as we are only $80,000.00 from hitting the $1 million dollar mark of total monies raised right here in Coshocton County for cancer research and education for the American Cancer Society. Our county was the 20th top Relay in Ohio (out of 250) in 2007 thus demonstrating that Coshocton County is a place where people with cancer are deeply cared about. This year’s theme, “Its Written In The Stars” demonstrates our resolve that cancer can and will be defeated. 40 teams have stepped up for this year’s event with unity and determination to continue the tradition that Coshocton County means business in doing our part to face and conquer this disease head-on. Please join us on Friday, May 16th at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds for the 13th annual Relay for Life. Opening ceremonies begin at 6:00 P.M. The traditional Lumanaria Candle Lighting Ceremony will be held at 9:00 PM on Friday. During the 24 hour event several local bands, a magic show, a dance troupe, our annual cake, craft, and quilt auction in addition to the annual Miss Relay Contest will take place. Also, we will again honor our armed forces as well as our elected officials and first responders at Noon on Saturday. We will also be recognizing our Honorary Chairs…survivors of Breast and Lung cancer, respectively. This will be a historical year for the Coshocton County Relay. Thanks to you and the Coshocton Community, we will meet our goal and hit the $1,000,000.00 mark! Together, we all share in the effort to find a cure and beat this disease. See you on the track,

Bob Nicholson Co-Chair

Mencer & Son Pen Theme Song Following in the footsteps of the 2007 Theme Song, Sheldon Mencer and son Blake “Aaron” Mencer have written the theme song for the 2008 Coshocton County Relay for Life titled “It’s Written in the Stars”. Cancer survivors and members of local high school choirs will once again accompany Mencer during the performance. The American Cancer Society Coshocton County Relay for Life is celebrating its thirteenth year in Coshocton and the event will be held at The Coshocton County Fairgrounds beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 16th. See song on page 13.

Walk With Us Come walk with us on the road to a cure. With laughter and tears, it’s a good time for sure. You’ll be glad you came as you walk through the night Knowing with your help we are winning this fight. The first lap’s for victory, survivors stand proud. They march round the track to the cheers of the crowd. The next one’s for families, who help them get through, And stood there beside them with love, strong and true. We are here to fight cancer, we’ll keep coming back. Until there is a cure, we will return to the track. We’ll walk in the moonlight, we’ll walk in the sun, For 24 hours each year till we’ve won. So come and walk with us, how glad we’ll all be, When someday we walk in a world cancer free.

Annin & Co. Employees – Doing the Right Thing for Relay By Jan Myers

Julie Darr and Brenda Howell have been the co-captains for the Relay for Life team from Annin & Co. for the past six years. Over the previous 5 years the Annin team has raised over $100,000. “I don’t know whether most people realize that it is strictly employee money that makes up the Annin contribution to Relay for Life,” said Howell. “The Annin employees deserve a lot of credit for donating their own money. It’s not so important that we’ve come in first place the past several years, it’s the fact that our employees give so much to make this happen.” Howell got involved in Relay for Life after she lost her mother in 2002 due to brain cancer. “We’re not sure how many team members we’ll have this year from Annin,” said Darr. “But usually we have about 10 – 15 on our relay team. We may not know for sure until the weekend comes. Our goal in past years has been between $20,000 and $25,000. But we aren’t sure what to expect this year.” The Annin employees look forward to the activities Julie and Brenda do to raise funds toward Relay. They have a 50/50 drawing and make meals to sell to the

employees. “Our plant manager, Rick Merrell lets us prepare the meals here and sell them to the employees to raise money,” said Darr. “We always have a good turn out for those meals. We also have a lottery tree with $50 worth of lottery tickets that we raffle off. Plus we have raffles for NASCAR items and other donated items from Annin’s Warehouse Manager. “ “If it wasn’t for our boss Rick and our other supervisors for letting us do this we wouldn’t be able to do what we do,” said Darr and Howell. “And if it wasn’t for the two shifts of employees who contribute to this cause we wouldn’t have raised all the money that we have over the years.” Plant Manager, Rick Merrell says the company has enjoyed being a part of Relay. “We think it’s important to be involved in Relay for Life,” stated Merrell. “We have several people who work here who are either survivors or have been touched by cancer in some way. To us, it’s the right thing to do for an important cause.”

In 1985 an American Cancer Society volunteer, Dr. Gordy Klatt, put on his jogging shoes and headed for his local oval after a good friend succumbed to cancer. Twenty four hours and 81 miles later, Dr. Klatt had raised an amazing $27,000 in sponsored donations for the American Cancer Society. Since then Relay For Life has developed into the world’s largest Fundraising event, and from its humble beginnings is now held in over 2,000 locations and has raised over 150 million for research in the United States. Relay For Life events are now held in eight countries around the world including Australia, Canada, the United States, Great Britain, Scotland, Ireland and Singapore.
