Introducing Portrait Magazine! The employees and staff of Good Fortune Advertising LLC, the company that publishes The Coshocton County Beacon are pleased to present to the residents of Coshocton County “Portrait Magazine”, a publication that we hope will provide you with an informative overview of our community. Portrait Magazine is designed to give you a glimpse into the various agencies, churches, government services and elected officials, along with educational opportunities and services that are available in our community and beyond when you need some help or guidance. Our goal in producing Portrait Magazine was to publish and distribute to our community a high quality magazine with information all about Coshocton County, the many agencies and support organizations that

exist to provide help in your time of need, and things to do throughout the year. You will find a fairly complete schedule of events at the very beginning of this publication that can help guide you in choosing activities for family and friends throughout 2009 in Coshocton County. I urge you to pore through this publication and seek out the groups that may interest you; from parenting groups to dance to youth activities to phone numbers and websites for federal government agencies and more. We made every effort to include the information that we thought you would find most helpful and insightful, providing email addresses and websites whenever available, recognizing that this form of communication is rapidly becoming more and more valuable in today’s fast paced world. We also did

our absolute best to ensure that this publication is complete and while we were diligent in pursuing that goal - I imagine we missed some groups, organizations and events that should have been included. As the owner of Good Fortune Advertising LLC, the company that produced and published Portrait Magazine, I take full responsibility for any errors and omissions in the content. Please let me know personally of any errors or omissions so we can correct them for the 2010 edition by sending an email with your information to: mark@ coshoctoncountybeacon.com. Thank you. I am indebted to my staff, the many advertisers that helped support this first edition of Portrait Magazine, and especially Beth Dulaney, who compiled all of the editorial content through much painstaking research, dozens of phone calls and hours of typing. Thank you

Beth! I would also like to recognize the rest of our winning team; Nicole Medley, who proofed the content and kept us on track throughout, Bryan Fox, our on-site graphics artist who compiled Portrait Magazine, including most of the ads from the ground-up, and Sandy Harvey, who consulted with, and assisted many of our customers with their advertisements in Portrait Magazine. Thank you team! Finally, we would ask you to consider shopping, dining, recreating and worshipping locally whenever you can, as our local businesses, restaurants, groups, churches and organizations help make our community go. We are grateful to those that helped support this publication and our efforts in so very many ways. Thank you. Respectfully, Mark D. Fortune Owner & Publisher, Good Fortune Advertising LLC

BRIEF HISTORY OF COSHOCTON COUNTY In 1775, Netawatwees was Chief of the Turtle tribe of the Delaware nation. He and a grand council of the Delaware decided to move to the forks of the Tuscarawas and Walhonding Rivers founding the town of Goschachunk, capital of the Delaware nation. The village extended from the river to Third Street. The village was burned by General Brodhead in 1780. The city of Coshocton was built upon the site of this Indian village.

The town of Coshocton was laid out in April, 1802, by John Mathews and Ebenezer Buckingham, Jr. The town was christened Tuscarawa. Three squares, of four acres each, were donated to the public; one for school purposes and two for public use. One of these is now occupied by the court house. Charles Williams is regarded as the first settler. However, Mary Harris is considered the first white person in the county. As early as 1750, Mary Har-

Chalfant Church, the oldest church in Coshocton County, celebrated 200 years of existence in 2008, as the church was founded in 1808 by Mordecai Chalfant. The church is located on County Road 439 in Washington Township at the southern edge of Coshocton County. The church pictured here was built in 1893 and the Chalfant Society was established in 1808. The church was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in the 1980’s. Several missionaries and Methodist Bishops established their roots and formed their faith at historic Chalfant Church.

ris lived along the Walhonding River at Whitewoman’s Town. She had been captured at an early age from one of the colonies. January 22, 1811. An act for the organization of the county of Coshockton. Sect. 1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of the state of Ohio, That the county of Coshockton be, and the same is hereby organized into a separate county. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after the first day of April next. Thus, the county of Coshocton was legally organized. It was not until 1833 that the city of Coshocton received its articles of incorporation. Also, in 1811, a Methodist Church, the first of any kind in the entire area was constructed on Mordecai Chalfant’s section in Washington Township. On August 21, 1830, the first visiting canal boat, the Monticello, arrived from Cleveland. The canal was not completed but this was the beginning of new growth for the county. The first canal boat launched in the county was called the Renfrew, in honor of merchant James Renfrew. It was built by Thomas Lewis. Agriculture, manufacturing and industry flourished. Coshocton became famous for specialty advertising thanks to Jasper Meek, who first placed advertisement on a school bag. The Beach Company, Tuscarora, Meek, Standard, Novelty, Ameri-

can Art Works and others manufactured products sent all over the world. PopeGosser China Company made award winning china. Coshocton Glove Company made gloves worn by thousands. West Lafayette became the “enamel capital of the world.” Tragedy has also struck Coshocton County by way of fires, the great flood of 1913 and accidents such as the September 11, 1950, troop train wreck at West Lafayette. Thirty-three were killed and fifty injured when the Spirit of St. Louis plunged into the troop train. One of Coshocton’s greatest assets is its people. Many have become world renown as doctors, scientists, inventors, entertainers, artists, athletes, a national labor leader, a U.S. Supreme Court Judge, educators, legislators and military leaders. Cooperation, support and immense generosity describe the people of Coshocton County. No matter how you spell it, no matter how you pronounce it, no other place in the world has the name Coshocton. HISTORICAL SITES

Helmick Covered Bridge C.R. 25 Blissfield, Ohio Originally built in 1863, this covered bridge was an integral part of commerce in the village of Helmick. The bridge provided access to two grist mills used by farmers from as far as 25 miles away. The bridge fell into decay and was closed in 1981. Citizens raised a total of $250,000 to restore the bridge and complete the project in 1996.

Whitewoman’s Rock CR 23 Coshocton Whitewoman’s Rock is on private property, but can be seen in the tree lines on the left. The truth about what happened there is hard to pinpoint, but popular legend claims that in the 1750’s, a white girl captive of a Delaware warrior broke away from him and leaped to her death in the Walhonding River rather than succumb to life as a captive. The towering rock she leaped from has since been called Whitewoman’s Rock.

GENERAL INFORMATION Ohio Public Libraries are the best funded libraries in the country. The

Coshocton County Library is no exception. They offer a wide variety of not only books but books-ontape, videos, DVDs and even Internet service. All codes of conduct must be followed when entering the library including but not limited to no smoking, being properly clothed, no running or obscene language, and no animals are allowed except when required for assistance. For the complete list of the codes of conduct, visit their web site.

RESERVES

E-MAILS

There are over 160 libraries on the SEO (South-Eastern Ohio) network where members can borrow just about any book or movie title available in the state of Ohio. If a particular title is not available through this network, the library will graciously check around the country and order the required material from anywhere in the country. This service is completely free to any library card holder, and the items required arrive quickly, depending on where they are ordered.

Any library member may request to communicate to the library via e-mail. The member’s e-mail is put on file and the library will e-mail them regarding any overdue books, late fees, or if the item they have requested has arrived. If the member requests not to be e-mailed, they will receive this information via standard mail.

A fairground’s that was packed with balloon enthusiasts, families and festival lovers were thrilled to see nearly twenty hot air balloons launch despite a steady surface wind last Saturday evening. The 27th annual Frontier Power Hot Air Balloon Festival was another success for our community. The hard work and many hours of meetings by committee members paid off for local attendees and those that made the trek from other parts of the state with a flawless launch and wonderful opportunities for photographs. (Remember to enter the photo contest next year!)

Following the launch, Phil Dirt and the Dozers entertained an enthusiastic crowd with tunes from the 50’s, 60’s and more. And yes, vinyl is going to make a comeback someday. Then, the hot air balloon nightglow oohed and awed the crowd as blasts of propane filled the balloons with bright orange, yellow and red tongues of flame. It is a spectacle that everyone should see at least once in their lifetime! This brings us to the next point of this article. Friday evening had the second First Friday event of the year in downtown Coshocton, the Farmer’s Market at the fairgrounds and the old Fresno school. These farmer’s markets provide fresh vegetables, crafts, sweets and other goodies sure to tempt on Saturday mornings. Now, this article wouldn’t be complete without mentioning those that prefer to smack that little white ball into the cup – and our county is blessed with four beautiful golf courses. Hiking, biking, fishing or boating, you can do it all in Coshocton County. For the gardener or someone that may prefer a quieter weekend or summer evening, the enjoyment of watching birds from a deck or patio cannot be underestimated. And what about gardening and flowers that bring a smile? I think you get the idea by now that there is PLENTY to do right here in our own county and a lot of the activities are good, old-fashioned family fun that is FREE!
