Investigate permits before starting remodeling projects COSHOCTON – Are you thinking of doing some remodeling this fall? Before you pick up your hammer and nails or hire someone to do the work, you will want to find out if permits are required for your project. Cherry Wilson, executive assistant to Steve Mercer, mayor of Coshocton, said permits are issued in the service director’s office at Coshocton City Hall, but you can do your research before hand by visiting www. cityofcoshocton.com, clicking on city council, codified ordinances and then searching for code 1305.01. This specific code explains that any construction or remodeling of a building within the city that could cause taxes to go up, must first obtain a permit. The process includes the filing of a sworn application signed by the owner of the property or his agent and plans for the project. According to the city’s website, “If such plans and specifications do not show that proper provisions have been made for public fire and sanitation protection, or for police control or for prevention of a nuisance, the director (of public safety and service) shall refuse to grant the permit.” The application also has to include an estimated cost, description with street number of where the work is being done and how to explain the location if providing a street address is not practicable. Ordinance 1305.01 gives people one year to start their work after application date and one year to complete the project after it was started. Permits, however, can be

extended with an application to the director of public safety and service. Costs of permits are outlined in ordinance 1305.04 and are defined as follows: - Residential permits, minimum fee: $10. This covers all new building and/or alterations up to a cost of $5,000. For each additional $1,000 over the initial $5,000, a $1 per thousand fee will be added. - Commercial or industrial permit, minimum fee: $50. This charge is for the first $10,000. For each additional $1,000 over the initial $10,000, a $2 per thousand fee will be added. Building permit applications can be found on the city’s website under the downloads tab. Mary Beck, administrator/clerk for the Coshocton County Commissioners, said the only place in the county other than the City of Coshocton you need a permit for remodeling or home improvement would be the Village of Warsaw and the Village of West Lafayette. “They have zoning,” Beck said. “The only thing you need a permit to do out in the county (outside villages/ cities) is if you want to put a new well in. Then you need to go to the health department and get a permit for that.” For information on the Village of Warsaw visit, www. warsawohio.us and for more on the Village of West Lafayette go to www.westlafayettevillage.com. COSHOCTON – There are more than 1.5 million different species and types of mold and can be found virtually anywhere. Thankfully, most common molds are not harmful. Mold is classified as a fungus and its function is to consume dead organic matter. There are three different kinds of mold: allergenic molds, pathogenic molds, and toxic molds. Allergenic molds can cause allergies in humans. People with asthma or those with a weak immune system may be more susceptible to this type of mold. Pathogenic molds can cause health problems in those with a weakened immune system and should be removed by a professional. Toxic molds are the most dangerous and could be fatal. “The underlying cause for mold is moisture,” said Ron Lillibridge, owner of PuroClean, located at 137 N. 15th St., Coshocton. “Most people have mold in their basement because most basements are moist and wet.” Mold is also common in bathrooms and can grow due to moisture and soap and shampoo residue. “Mold needs a food source to grow,” said Lillibridge. “It feeds off of any organic matter.” If you find an area with mold inside your home, it should be cleaned with warm soapy water. Do not use bleach. It will not kill the mold. Once the area is clean, let it dry completely. Also, painting over an area with

as “black mold” produces mycotoxins that can cause serious breathing difficulties and bleeding of the lungs. It is found on wood or paper. mold or covering it will not eliminate potential health hazards. “The bad stuff isn’t as bad as some people think,” said Lillibridge. “Mold is everywhere. If you have a spore area, most people can clean that themselves. If it’s a large area, you might want to call the professionals.” Most mold is hidden behind walls or above ceiling tiles, so it may be difficult to spot. If you develop cold symptoms or respiratory problems that won’t go away, you may have a mold problem that needs to be professionally removed. “Just because the mold is black in color does not necessarily mean that it’s black mold,” said Lillibridge. Mold specialists will take samples from the infected area and it will be tested. The results will tell what type of mold is present and the mold count. In some situations, mold removal can be covered by your insurance.

Did You Know? Home improvement projects can inadvertently expose homeowners to hidden dangers. For example, lead paint may be lurking underneath layers of existing paint in older homes. Exposure to lead dust or fumes may cause brain damage or other adverse health effects, especially in children or pregnant women. It is essential that homeowners control their exposure to lead or other hazardous substances through the use of protective equipment, such as a properly fitted respirator. If lead is discovered, it may require professional containment and cleanup. Contact your local health authority if you discover or suspect you have discovered lead paint or other hazardous materials in your home. metrocreativeconnection.com | Contributed

Homeowners who have dealt with insect infestations know that even the smallest critters can make for formidable foes. A single insect might not seem like a substantial problem, but such uninvited guests have a tendency to multiply, quickly becoming a problem for less proactive homeowners. Such is the case with fruit flies. Though small in stature, fruit flies can prove a pesky, food-contaminating nuisance. As their name implies, fruit flies are attracted to ripening fruits, which serve as a food source and a breeding ground. Fruit flies also breed around garbage disposals, drains and garbage cans while facilitating the transmission of bacteria that can prove harmful to human health. Fortunately, homeowners can employ a combination of strategies to fend off fruit fly infestations before they take root. Locate and eliminate potential breeding grounds. Fruit flies are seen swarming around trash cans and areas where food has been left out. According to TERRO®, an industry leader in DIY pest control products, fruit fly populations tend to be greatest during the summer and fall months, when they infest fruits during the harvest season. Pay particular attention to trash containers during these times of year, discarding trash more frequently if necessary and making sure all trash can lids are tightly closed. In addition, place ripened fruits and vegetables in the refrigerator during these times of year. Trap flies before they can breed and multiply. Fermenting fruit or moist organic debris is necessary to

complete the fruit fly life cycle. TERRO® Fruit Fly Traps, which last 30 days, employ a non-toxic, food-based liquid lure to attract and trap fruit flies. Once inside, fruit flies cannot escape, eliminating their chance to breed and multiply. Before placing traps, pay attention to where fruit flies tend to be most problematic and place the apple-shaped traps in those areas.

Keep a clean home. Clean homes, and tidy kitchens in particular, are less likely to be overcome with fruit fly infestations. After cooking meals, be sure to clean all surfaces with which food has come in contact. Clean any spilled drinks, since sweet and sticky beverages like soda and wine lure fruit flies. It’s also important to keep cleaning materials, such as mops and drains, clean, since fruit flies can continue to breed in soiled mops and dirty drains.

Budgeting home improvement Home improvements can add value and aesthetic appeal to a home. However, to reap the rewards of a remodeled room, home addition or any home improvement project, homeowners will have to invest both their money and their time. Establishing a project budget can be helpful and prevent overspending. According to Visually, a marketing information service, nearly half of the homeowners surveyed said the cost of their renovation projects did not exceed their budgets. However, more than one-third of those surveyed reported going over budget on their projects. To keep costs down, consider hiring a contractor. He or she will have industry contacts and may be able to get materials at a lower cost. While you will pay for labor, working with a contractor greatly reduces both the time spent on the project and the risk of costly mistakes being made. In addition, think about the way you finance the renovations. Industry experts have found that homeowners who finance their home improvement projects with lines of credit end up spending more money on average than those who use their savings to fund projects. While it may be tempting to take out a line of credit for a home improvement project, spending only money you already have may be the more responsible route to take.

Home improvement projects for your fall to-do list Homeowners know that maintaining a home can be a year-round job. No home is immune to wear and tear, and homeowners who want to protect their real estate investments should try to stay two steps ahead to ensure their homes do not succumb to the elements or become outdated and unappealing to prospective buyers. Fall has become a season that’s synonymous with home improvement, but homeowners need not wait until the leaves begin changing colors to start planning their next projects. The following are a few items homeowners can add to their fall home improvement to-do lists.

Patio cleanup Patios are popular hangouts during spring and summer, and that can result in a lot of wear and tear. Once you store patio furniture for the winter, inspect your entire patio to determine if it needs any refurbishing. While certain patio projects may be best left for spring, you can still clean any stained areas around the grill and look for cracks in the sidewalk that need to be addressed. Preparing for fall home improvement projects ahead of time can help homeowners complete projects in a timely manner and ensures they won’t be forced to brave the winter elements when refurbishing their homes.

Window and doorway inspection Before temperatures start dropping once again, homeowners will want to inspect their windows and doorways for leaks. Over time, cracks can develop around windows and doorways, and while such cracks are rarely noticeable when the weather outside is warm, they can be quite obvious and very costly if they remain unsealed come the start of winter. Cold air can enter a home through cracks around windows and doorways, and many homeowners who don’t suspect leaks may respond by turning up the thermostats in their homes. That can prove quite expensive over a full winter. Choose a windy autumn day to place a hand by windows and external doorways in your home to see if you can feel drafts. If you can, seal these cracks as soon as possible.

Roof inspection Less precipitation tends to fall during the warmer months than during the late fall and winter. As a result, homeowners may not be aware of leaky roofs until autumn has come and gone. But waiting until winter to inspect the roof can prove disastrous, as weather conditions will not be conducive to inspection and increased precipitation may result

Gutter cleaning While some homeowners prefer to delay their gutter cleaning projects until late fall, those whose homes are surrounded by trees may need to schedule two such projects. Gutters clogged with leaves and other debris can cause serious roof damage, and that damage can extend all the way inside a home. In addition, clogged gutters make great nesting areas for insects or critters. Always stand on a ladder when cleaning gutters, wearing gloves to remove items by hand and dropping leaves and debris into a trash can below. Standing on the roof and leaning over gutters greatly increases your risk of injury. If the gutters are clear when you first examine them in early fall, you can wait until later in the season to give them a complete and thorough cleaning. Once you have finished clearing the gutters, you can use a hose to run water through them and the downspouts to confirm everything is functioning properly.

in potentially costly damage. Leaky roofs can be easily identified by looking for water stains on interior ceilings. Once you see a stain, you can climb onto the roof to identify the location of the leak and fix it before winter rains and snowfall turn the problem into something much larger. Inspect your ceilings for signs of leaking after a strong rainfall, and then address any leaks immediately.

move away from buildings.” Another important fact to consider is where you place bird feeders because they should be kept away from your home, deck or porch. “The seed birds scatter on to the ground is ‘fast-food’ for rodents (mice, rats, chipmunks) that will soon be looking for a warm place to over-winter,” Rogers said. For more tips on keeping critters out of your home, she suggests visiting http:// www.humanesociety.org/animals/resources/tips/keep_wildlife_out.html or http://icwdm.org/prevention/decks.asp. Before telling your patio good bye for the winter, metrocreativeconnection. com also suggests cleaning any stained areas around your grill and looking for cracks in the patio and sidewalk that need addressed. It also suggests cleaning seasonal items before you store them away. Scrubbing them down can remove a season’s worth of dirt and grease, ensuring those seasonal items are ready to go when spring makes its return.

By Josie Sellers josie@coshoctoncountybeacon.com

COSHOCTON – Fall is a great time to give your outdoor items a good cleaning and inspect your home for possible ways unwanted critters could get in this winter. Tammi Rogers, program asst., ag and natural resources and county master gardener volunteer coordinator at the OSU Extension Coshocton County Office said one basic tip to follow is to make sure you close up all cracks/holes around doors, windows and other openings. “Really take a good look,” she said. “Pull back mulch or leaves around the foundation so that critters don’t have a place to hide.” Rogers said you also want to keep vegetation, shrubs, trees, and plants trimmed back. “They should not be touching the house/porch/etc.,” she said. “Look for other places wildlife could be hiding (brush piles, firewood) and remove or

Our battery equipment feels just as powerful as gasoline. SCOTT & KELLY CENGIA

STIHL Battery-Powered Product Homeowners

Many people decide to upgrade from their apartments or condominiums out of a need for more space. But even after moving into a new home, homeowners may soon begin to outgrow the room they have. Rather than looking for a new home, some homeowners consider expansion. Expanding a living space can be expensive, and a more affordable option may be converting existing basement or garage space into something more livable. Garages already are built on a foundation, have four walls and a roof overhead, so a garage-conversion project is merely a matter of turning this utilitarian area into a living space. Before beginning the renovation, homeowners should consider the benefits versus the cost of converting the garage. For those who are planning to grow old in a house, a garage conversion can be a worthy investment. But those who intend to sell their homes rather than retire in them may learn that a converted garage can affect home value and make it less desirable at resale. Compare your home to others in the area and see what your neighbors have done. If converted garages are the norm where you live, your own renovation may fit in with others. Always apply for the proper permits and learn the zoning laws to see if a garage conversion is acceptable in your town or city. It’s best to go by the book so that work can be done in a proper manner and be inspected for safety. Many homeowners hope their garage-conversion projects will make their garages seem like a seamless part of the rest of the house. To do so, you will need to remove evidence the space was once a garage. Slab floor will need to be raised and insulated. Walls also will need to be insulated and finished to improve comfort and soundproofing. Many garages do not have windows, so for the garage to function as a renovated space, windows may need to be added. One of the biggest transformations will come by way of modifying the garage door entry. Some homeowners prefer to leave the existing door so that the home still

has the appearance of a garage from the curb, while others remove the garage door and rebuild the exterior wall so that it has a window or another architectural element. An architect can help suggest design elements that will camouflage the original garage look and make the space seem like it was always part of the main living area of the home. Landscaping work also can minimize the appearance of an old garage. Rather than having the driveway end at the wall of a home, shrubbery, pavers and other techniques can blend the garage renovation into the rest of the yard design. Transforming a garage into a living space can add several hundred square feet to a home. Hire a reputable contractor and follow the municipal guidelines for modifying the space to ensure the job is done right.

Take a look at furniture and floor covering trends By Josie Sellers josie@coshoctoncountybeacon.com

COSHOCTON – New flooring or furniture could help you give your home a new look this fall. Trish Wilson, co-owner, sales/office manager, at Wilson Carpet & Furniture, said luxury vinyl tile products are very popular right now due to them being water-resistant and durable. “Most luxury vinyl tiles are in the earth tone family and blend well with earth tone carpets,” she said. “People are trending toward carpets that are good at repelling stains and pet problems. The softer carpets also are popular because they feel so good on your feet.” As for furniture, Wilson said people are going for the comfy, casual look. “People are doing away with the formal look so formal dining and living rooms are outdated,” she said. “We are still seeing people focusing on neutral tones,

including grays and using an accent chair or recliner for a burst of color.” Wilson also has noticed that adjustable bed options are becoming more important to people. “They are popular with people who just like the idea of watching TV in bed to people who cannot sleep on a flat mattress due to various reasons,” she said. “Getting a good night’s sleep is important to everyone and the choices in adjustables make getting one affordable.” No matter what piece of furniture you would like to update, Wilson said you should not worry about getting it into your home. “If you feel you have a special situation for delivery we can go out and take a look,” she said. They also can send you home with sample books of furniture fabric swatches and different floor coverings so you can see how they will blend with what is already in your home.

COSHOCTON – On Monday, Aug. 29, the Tree Commission Academy hosted its third graduating class consisting of James (Jim) Marcentile and Connie Miller in the board room at COTC. The tree commission researches, plans, and advises the community on urban forestry within the city of Coshocton. The first tree commission academy in Coshocton was in 2012 after Coshocton received a low score of 48 out of 95 in urban forestry in 2011 from America in Bloom. Since then, five Coshocton residents have graduated from the academy and include Steve Fox, senior chairperson, Tom Heading, Ann Miller, Marcentile and Miller. Members of the tree commission advocate and educate in local schools. Their top priority currently is to eliminate trees that are a high risk to the community. Eventually, the commission wants to plant a more diversified species of trees in the city at a proper location. During the graduation ceremony, the two graduates presented their senior project to those in attendance and explained briefly about their classes. Marcentile and Miller, along with the alumni before them, spend hours surveying, researching, pruning, planning, budgeting, and having trees removed that may pose a hazard situation. At the end of the presentation, the two received their certificates from Lola Lewis, regional urban forester. “The mayor asked if I would do this and I’ve always been into the woods and forest,” said Marcentile. “I’ve always been interested in reforesting areas in empty spaces. It’s good for wildlife and it’s good for you too. My BTUs on my electricity have gone down by one third since planting my trees. Trees protect us from the wind and sun. I wish I would have taken it sooner because it was very informative.” Miller is the landscape manager at Roscoe Village. “There are a lot of trees needing our attention,” she said. “This was the best way for me to get ahold of the concept of trees and their removal. There was a lot of good information in the classes and it’s going to help as far as some of the trees need to be put on

Many home improvement projects involve hanging decorative items, such as photo frames or shelving. Homeowners frequently wrestle with nails, screws and hanging hardware, perhaps creating more holes in their walls than is necessary to get items level and in the right spots. Instead of playing a guessing game of figuring out where the hanging holes or hooks are located on the back of items, use your office equipment to make life easier. Make a copy of the back of the item you’re trying to hang with a printer/scanner or a copy machine, making sure to copy the item to full scale. Print the copy at full size and use it to drill the hanging holes. If you don’t have access to a copy machine or scanner, use a piece of tape to measure the distance between the hanging holes on the back of the frame. Stick the tape to the wall and then put your nails or screws at the ends of the tape.

level of stress on the tree and increase its vulnerability to disease and insect infestation. A good rule of thumb is to never prune more than 25 percent of the crown. According to experts at TreeHelp.com, living branches should comprise at least twothirds the height of the tree. In some instances, the rules may need to be bent if trees are interfering with utility lines or to meet community laws. However, always prune minimally to avoid damaging the tree. The right tools also make the job safer and easier. Use a pole pruner and lopper, rope saws, folding pruner, and a bucksaw. A chainsaw can be used in some instances, especially when pruning larger limbs. Always disinfect pruning tools after you’re done to prevent the spread of disease to other trees. Consider hiring a professional tree service if pruning proves beyond your capabilities. Doing so is safe and often well worth the investment.

Roofing, Siding & So Much More... metrocreativeconnection.com | Contributed

Pruning is a job that may be tackled by do-it-yourselfers, but sometimes larger tasks are best left to a professional tree trimming service. Trees may require pruning for a variety reasons. Storms may have damaged branches, necessitating a pruning. In other instances, trees may have outgrown their yards, overpowering the landscape. Autumn and winter, when trees largely go dormant and fallen leaves make it easier to see the branches beneath, may be prime times to prune. Pruning during the dormant period also minimizes sap loss and stress to the tree, and can help cut down on the growth of fungi. In addition, insects are less likely to be problematic during the colder months of the year. Trimming and pruning can be handled by do-it-yourselfers if the branches are smaller and more manageable. Practice on thinner branches before moving on to thicker ones, which may require extra help. Branches may be heavy, and it takes a guided hand to ensure the branches fall in a safe manner so they do not cause damage or injury. Branches also need to be trimmed properly to facilitate good healing. Trees will form a callus bark covering over cuts to keep out disease and decay, much as a scab forms over a person’s wound. Damaging the bark on a tree while pruning may interfere with that process, so do-it-yourselfers need to take the time to prune correctly. According to Danny Lipford, home improvement expert and host of the radio program “Today’s Homeowner,” larger limbs may require three cuts instead of one. The first cut is a small notch in the bottom of the limb, around two to three feet from the trunk and about one-quarter of the way through. This helps prevent the bark from splitting. A relief cut is then made a few inches away from the notch cut, and goes all the way through. This removes the weight of the branch so that the final cut can be made without the branch splitting and falling. The final cut is made right where the limb extrudes from the branch collar, or the swollen bump that then forms into the tree limb. Follow the slant of the branch collar when making the cut. Smaller or thinner branches may not require the same three steps, but every effort should be made to reduce injury to the tree. When deciding how much to prune, less is usually more. All pruning can put some

Three potential trouble signs for driveways Though they are often easy to overlook, driveways are durable parts of a home that can greatly impact a home’s curb appeal. Driveways endure quite a bit of wear and tear over their lifespans, and homeowners who have not given their driveways much thought may want to start looking for potential trouble signs that indicate a need for some driveway maintenance. According to the online home improvement resource HomeAdvisor.com, the average cost of a driveway installation in 2015 was just under $3,700. Those costs are influenced by a host of factors, including the size of the driveway and the material it’s made of. Damaged driveways do not necessarily need to be replaced, as some may just need minor repairs. But homeowners who see any of the following trouble signs in their driveways may want to consult a professional contractor to determine what their next steps should be. 1. Potholes Potholes might be most often associated with heavily trafficked roadways, but even driveways are susceptible to potholes. As the ground beneath the driveway expands and contracts, the pavement above that ground weakens and becomes more susceptible to damage. That damage may ultimately lead to large chunks of the driveway breaking down, creating holes as a result. Homeowners who live in areas that experience heavy snowfall may see their driveways develop potholes after they are shoveled or plowed. Potholes that are not fixed may damage vehicles that drive on the pavement, and potholes may even expand over time.

2. Accumulation of water Puddles that form during a rainstorm may not be indicative of anything other than a rainy day. But water that pools or runs down the middle of the driveway may indicate drainage problems. Such problems may be the result of structural problems with the slope of the driveway, which can cause bigger issues down the road. When water is not absorbed into the ground or directed away from your home, it can then flow into the house, potentially making your garage or home susceptible to water damage. 3. Cracks Cracking is one of the more noticeable issues that can plague driveways. Many driveways experience cracking as materials inevitably succumb to the elements. Driveway cracks may develop for various reasons, including poor initial installation. Tree roots that grow beneath the driveway surface may also contribute to cracking as the driveways ultimately succumb to the pressure created by the growing roots. Some cracks may prove less problematic than others, but homeowners should still speak with a contractor if they notice their driveway is starting to succumb to cracks. Driveways may not draw the attention of homeowners too often, but damaged driveways that go ignored may ultimately lead to very costly problems. metrocreativeconnection.com | Contributed metrocreativeconnection.com | Contributed

Smartphones can make the home improvement process that much easier. Various smartphone apps now exist, and many were designed with the intention of making it easier to plan and execute home improvement projects. Some apps allow smartphone users to more easily match the colors of their furnishings with certain accents and accessories, saving homeowners the time spent wondering if certain items will match or clash with their existing furnishings. Homeowners can even make use of apps that make it easier for them to see how new furniture will fit in their existing spaces. Of course, homeowners also can take photos of their furnishings on their smartphones as well, and then compare those photos to shades of paint or carpet to save themselves from making a second trip to the store.

Make garage organization go smoothly Want to get your garage organized before winter gets here? Here are some tips to make the project go as smoothly as possible. Empty the garage. The first step when organizing a garage is to empty it completely. Old machinery and rusted lawn and garden tools have a way of disappearing in garages, and those items may remain there for years if the garage is never emptied. Once you have emptied the garage, you might be surprised to learn just how much or even how little space you have to work with. Clean the garage top to bottom. After you have emptied the garage, give it a thorough cleaning. Cleaning the garage serves multiple purposes. A clean garage is less likely to be overcome with dirt and/or critters, both of which can contribute to the deterioration of tools and machinery stored in the garage. In addition, you may be less likely to let a clean garage fall back into disorganization, saving you the trouble of reorganizing the garage in the spring. Look up. Many homeowners fail to make adequate use of the vertical space in their garages. But keeping items off the floor can make it easier to clean the garage and will provide more room for your car or other machinery you don’t want to leave in the driveway or a

backyard shed. Install shelves so you can more safely store automotive fluids and cleaners, and hang some hooks or hammer a few nails into the garage walls so you can hang tools like rakes and garden shears. Group tools by season. Grouping tools by season can make for a more organized garage and one less likely to be overcome with clutter. Designate one corner of the garage for lawn and gardening tools and another for winter tools like snow shovels or snowblowers. This makes it easier to find tools when you need them. When grouping tools, you can also group items by who uses them. For example, parents can designate one area of the garage for their tools, while kids can get their own area for their toys and bicycles. Resolve to park in the garage. One of the best ways to keep a garage organized is to park your vehicle or vehicles inside the garage each night. Parking in a garage protects your vehicle(s) from the elements, and you also won’t be tempted to leave items lying around on the garage floor if you know you will eventually be pulling your vehicle in. metrocreativeconnection.com | Contributed

Seven inexpensive ways to update a home now

1. Move around furniture. You may be able to change the look of a room without spending any money. Interior designers know how to arrange furniture for maximum appeal, but the average homeowner can do it, too. Find a focal point in the room and angle the furniture toward it. Don’t make the focal point the television, however. Try changing the placement of chairs and sofas. Simply moving a curio cabinet from one corner to another may also make a difference. 2. Add lighting. Lighting at different levels in the room can create a vibrant impact. Many homeowners mistakenly put in a couple of table lamps and think that will be adequate. However, properly illuminating a room means varying the lighting to create different moods at different times. Plus, more light can make a room feel more welcoming.

3. Add new pillows or drapes. Changing a few aspects of a room can give it an entirely new look. If you want to add a splash of color but don’t know what to do, think about incorporating some new throw pillows or change the curtains. An accessory here and there in a bright color also can incorporate a new hue without it being overwhelming. 4. Change knobs or small accents. Give a room a new look by focusing on the small details. Switch out cabinet knobs for something updated and modern. Take inventory of wall outlets and light switches and think about selecting new ones that coordinate with your home decor. 5. Use plants. Empty corners or spots you’re not certain how to fill may benefit from a plant. Plants are inexpensive ways to add instant color and visual appeal to a room. Plus, having live plants can help improve indoor air by filtering out contaminants. A home with plants also feels more cozy. 6. Hang new wall art. It may be time to look at your photos and artwork and make a few adjustments. Finding new prints to hang could instantly change a room’s ambience. And you needn’t spend a lot of money on professional photography, either. Grab your camera and take a few close-up shots of flowers or take in a landscape scenery. Many of today’s home printers can produce professional-quality prints in minutes.

7. Try a new coat of paint. After you’ve exhausted other avenues, choosing a new paint color may be the new look you desire. Painting is one of the least expensive yet most dramatic methods of changing a home’s interior. With dozens of hues to choose from, and new apps that enable you to take snapshots of things in nature or in your life and match them up to a paint color, you will have scores of opportunities to explore fresh new colors for your home. When you get inspired to make improvements to the home but fear how much it may take out of your wallet, consider inexpensive tricks that can induce a big “wow” factor.

Oftentimes, buying a home opens up a bottomless pit of opportunities for projects and improvements. While some homeowners engage in different repairs and fixups out of necessity, many others like to freshen-up their spaces out of personal preference instead of need. But even the most well-intentioned projects can be waylaid if budgets are tight. What many homeowners may not realize is that there are many ways to make updates and changes to a home that do not require a major overhaul or a large price tag. The following are seven projects that won’t break the bank.

Closing the pool for another season Closing a pool at the end of the swimming season can be bittersweet. Homeowners may be sad to bid adieu to the lazy days of splashing and swimming, but ready to embrace the cooler weather and the beauty of autumn. Before the leaves begin to fall from the trees, pool owners must prepare to close, or winterize, their pools. Gather your supplies. Make a list of the supplies you need to close the pool. Having everything on hand will make the process far more efficient than trying to wing it. Closing a pool can be a large job, so it pays to have some extra hands available. Enlist some helpers who will be available to hand you materials or to assist with placing the cover on the pool - which can be challenging to do on your own. Don’t wait until the last minute to purchase necessary chemicals. The chemicals used throughout the season will also be needed in the winterization process. Therefore, be sure you have enough before pool supplies become difficult to find in area stores. These include sanitizer, algaecide and pH-balancing chemicals. Clean the entire pool area. Ensuring the pool water and the surface of the pool is clean can make reopening the pool easy. Vacuum the pool thoroughly, removing any debris and organic matter that can contribute to algae growth. Don’t forget to brush down the walls of the pool and clean the jets and area where the filter skimmer meets the pool. Pool walls have plenty of crevices where algae can hide and multiply.

Test the water. Leading pool products manufacturer Hayward recommends adjusting the pH to between 7.2 and 7.8 to prevent stains, scaling and algae growth. Alkalinity should be 80 to 125 ppm for plaster/gunite pools and 125 to 150 ppm for other pool types. Test the level of available chlorine, and super-chlorinate the pool to maintain a sanitation level of at least 4 ppm. Once the pool cover is on, the amount of chlorine that escapes due to sunlight and evaporation will decrease. An algaecide may be used, if desired, as well. In very cold climates, a pool-water antifreeze may be necessary. Check with your pool supply retailer for more information. Run the filter. Run the filter at least 24 hours before disassembling the filter for the season. This will help circulate any chemicals added through the water. Drain the pool’s water to the appropriate level. Water should fall just below the skimmer opening. Many pools do not need to be completely drained for the winter. Shut off the filter pump, heater and any other equipment. Let all water drain out and allow equipment to dry before storing them away. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for lubrication and covering. Install freeze plugs if you choose to use them. Adjust electricity settings. Turn off the circuit to outdoor outlets that feed the pool equipment, testing to make sure the power is off.

Put accessories away. Remove any ladders, diving boards, slides, external drain lines, and other recreational materials from the pool, storing them in a garage or shed so they are not subjected to potentially harsh winter weather. Inflate air pillows to roughly 80 percent full if you will be using them. Gather your helpers to attach the pool cover or leaf catcher net. Secure it thoroughly with anchors, water bags, wire fasteners, or whatever method is applicable for the cover and pool type. Remember, a quality pool cover will last for several years and keep leaves, dust and other unwanted items out of the water. metrocreativeconnection.com | Contributed

Remodeling insurance can protect homeowners Many steps are involved in a successful home remodeling project. A common mistake made by homeowners is failing to consult with a homeowners’ insurance agent before beginning a major home overhaul. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners advises reviewing your home insurance policy before any significant work is done on your home. The right amount of coverage will protect your assets both during construction and afterward when your home is worth more. According to the independent consumer insurance Web site Insure.com, one in four remodeling projects will increase the value of a home by more than 25 percent, so there’s a good chance you will need to increase your coverage to compensate for renovations done on the home. Many insurance companies require you to insure your home for at least 80 percent of its replacement value. If you have added an extension or installed an inground pool, you may have raised the value of your property enough to necessitate an insurance policy change. Begin by talking with your insurance company and explain the scope of the planned renovations. Inquire whether you will need to update or amend your current insurance policy to protect yourself financially during the renovation. This is particularly important for those who will be doing the work themselves or asking a friend or family member for help. While many contractors have business and general liability insurance to protect themselves if a worker is injured, homeowners may need sufficient liability protection in the event a non-contractor gets hurt working on your home. Your

insurance company may have other types of insurance to protect you further if you are planning a very large project. Failure to ask about coverage before starting the renovations puts you at risk. If you will be using contractors and subcontractors, be sure that they are insured and bonded. Should they damage your home or be injured during the renovation, their insurance will cover any resulting expenses. However, if they are not insured or bonded, you may be held liable through your own insurance policy or you may have to pay out of pocket. Keep all receipts and document the progress of the renovation. You may need this information to present to your insurance carrier after the renovation is complete. This way you can request a new appraisal of the property and secure adequate insurance coverage. Certain improvements may make you eligible for discounts. For example, a new heating system, energy efficient appliances or an alarm system may qualify you for rebates or lower premiums. Homeowners may think they have covered all of their bases when preparing for a home renovation project. However, it also is essential to consider insurance needs before you begin work and then again when the project has been completed and the value of the home has increased. metrocreativeconnection.com | Contributed metrocreativeconnection.com | Contributed
