Park UMC Celebrates Anniversary Els Ministers Overseas Christian Men Unite Over Breakfast

Proudly published by:

Men of all faiths attend breakfasts COSHOCTON – A lot of church programs are geared toward women, but the local United Methodist churches are stepping up to change that with a monthly breakfast just for men. The breakfasts started in January and are held from 8 to 9 a.m. the third Saturday of the month at Jerry’s Restaurant on Whitewoman Street. “We were hoping for at least 20 at our first one, but ended up with 54,” said Rev. Keith Peachey, who organized the meetings. “We advertised them in the United Methodist Churches in Coshocton County, but anyone who

wants to can come.” Peachey just joined Grace United Methodist Church this past summer and brought the idea for the men’s breakfasts over from his former congregation in Cambridge. “They are an opportunity for men to come together, have fun and get to know other Christian men,” he said. “Hopefully they will also grow spiritually and it will encourage friendships.” The meetings are currently being led by pastors, but Peachey hopes they can soon take on a support role and turn the leadership over to lay people. “Pastors come and go and I think you can connect a little more to lay people,” Peachey said. “That also will make the meetings less churchy.” No matter who speaks though, they try not to do a lot of preaching. “We go in and visit, eat, have a program, close with a prayer and leave,” Peachey said. “We will have some diversity in the speakers,

COSHOCTON – The crosses that grace the front cover of Faith Renewed will soon be spread out across the community. The Roscoe United Methodist Church youth group helped assemble and paint the close to 200 crosses and plan on passing them out at the Easter sunrise service for people to place in their yards. “The idea started in Frankenmuth, Mich.,” said Susie Stout, youth group director at Roscoe UMC. “A gentleman there tried to get crosses removed from a bridge and was successful in getting that done. He then tried to get a cross

but they will be giving devotionals, not sales pitches.” The next men’s breakfast will be on Saturday, March 19 with Rev. Bill Buckeye from the West Lafayette United Methodist Church as the presenter. Men of all ages, from any church and those that don’t have a church home are welcome to attend. “Originally we were going to rotate these meetings between the different churches, but we decided to have them offsite because we didn’t want the un-churched to not be comfortable,” Peachey said. “Those who have come were mostly in their 50s, but we also have had several in their 30s and they brought their kids. We even have one pastor who has a youth in his church that he thinks will be a good person to share at one of the breakfasts.” For more information, call Grace United Methodist Church at 740-622-1302.

Local Student goes on mission trip

COSHOCTON – Ever since she attended college, Emily Els has felt that the Lord had given her a vision to do ministry work in Papua New Guinea. Last year, Els was able to make that vision a reality. Els is very active in CRU, formerly known as Campus Crusades for Christ, which is a world-wide college organization with the goal of developing leaders on campus to send them out into the world to share the Gospel. Although her heart had always longed to go to Papua New Guinea, Els was encouraged to spend a year in Fiji. She applied and was accepted after completing a one year ministry internship to prepare for her trip. At the last minute, the trip was canceled. Els was reassigned to go to

Brisbane, Australia. As she was preparing to leave, she received word that Australia’s CRU was sending a mission team to Papua New Guinea. Two women were scheduled to go, but at the last minute, one decided to back out. They asked Els if she wanted to go in her place, and she accepted. At the end of January, she left the United States to fly to Australia. Unfortunately, the team was not able to fly to Papua New Guinea immediately because their government decided to shut down. Els’ 90-day visa was set to expire and she had to travel to New Zealand to renew her visa. Finally, in April, the team left for Papua New Guinea. “The whole experience taught

COSHOCTON – The sound of hand bell choirs ringing throughout a church sanctuary gives special meaning to any church service during every season of the year. Whether the instrument is hand bells, hand chimes, or a mixture of both, there is just something about the sound that touches the soul and puts the listener at ease. Hand bells and hand chimes are two different types of instruments. Hand chimes are cylinder in shape and have their mallets attached to the outside and are often used as training instruments for those who want to play hand bells. They are lighter than hand bells and are the ideal instrument for junior high or high school bell choirs. Hand chimes also have a more mellow sound and do not have the brassy sound that hand bells often have. “With the smaller bells, they can be harsh and shrill,” said Rolanda Hunt, hand bell choir director at Central Christian Church. “Chimes are more mellow and soothing. With the bells, you can do various techniques to get various sounds.” Hand chimes are also low maintenance in comparison to bells and not as fragile. “You wouldn’t think of hand bells as being fragile, but they can be chipped and that can affect the sound,” said Leslie Dawson, director of the Asbury Hand Bell Choir at Grace United Methodist Church. “Chimes aren’t that fragile and the technique to get them to ring is simple.” Depending on the song, both hand bells and hand chimes are used. Typically, each person is responsible for three to four bells or chimes per song. Bells and chimes are marked with the alphabet letter and the number of the

corresponding octave level as on a piano or organ. Some bell companies even put either black or white handles on the bells to correspond with black and white keys on a keyboard. “People love to hear the hand bells,” said Dawson. “It’s popular, but it’s not common. Not all churches and schools have a hand bell group. But maybe if it were more common, it wouldn’t be as special.” Hand bells are made out of brass and must be protected from oils on the skin, which is why hand bell performers wear gloves. “That way, if you accidently touch the bell instead of the handle, the oil residue from your skin won’t get on the bell,” said Hunt. “To clean the bells, we have bell polish we use, and the bells should be rubbed off before they are stored in their cases.” The bells are polished with a polish cloth and jeweler’s rouge. When the performers are finished playing, the bells are wiped off and then polished once a year. “When they’re first polished, the bells turn a white gold color and then get darker as they oxidize,” said Dawson. Asbury Hand Bell Choir was started by Karen King and Dawson took over as director in 1987. They have 13 members and play a five octave set. The Central Christian Church has had a hand bell choir for the last 20 years. They are a group of nine members who perform nine to 10 times throughout the year during church service. Only six years ago, the choir received its first set of

Presbyterian Church, who apparently purchased one of the first ten sets of hand bells sold in the country many years ago, according to hand bell choir director, Charles Snyder. The Geneva Hand Bell Choir at the Presbyterian Church, composed of high school students and some adults, rings once a month for services. In the mid-1980s, college students who were in this group wanted to return. The Westminster Ringers were born and adults supplement the college students when they’re not available. “Hand bells are an amazing equalizer,” said Snyder. “Someone who has never had any musical experience will be on the same level as those with a music degree.” Dave Bown encouraged Snyder to start an adult-only hand bell choir. The group started in 2008 and now has 13 members who ring all five octaves of bells and uses the same Westminster Ringers name. “I think most hand bell choirs tend to ring arrangements of songs everyone will know,” said Snyder. “I tend to find pieces with arrangements just for bells.” Listening to hand bells can also be a very emotional experience. Last Christmas, both hand bell choirs set up ringers all over the Presbyterian Church’s sanctuary during the Christmas Eve service to signify the beginning of Christmas by ringing the bells. More than 175 people have

been involved with the service over the years. “To just be able to absorb the sound of the bells, you don’t have to listen to text, and you can just be swept up by the sheer beauty of the sound,” said Snyder. Dawson believes watching people play hand bells can not only produce a beautiful sound, but also something beautiful to watch. “I believe music touches people in ways that nothing else can,” said Dawson. “Bells are just a glorious way to do that. It can also be a form of visual art to see these people ringing bells in sync together. That’s what I always tell my group, how do you sound, how do you look? That’s why I don’t really like performing up in the balcony because nobody can see us.” The public is invited to hear the many hand bell choirs at the annual Ring the Bells for Habitat on Sunday, March 20 at 3 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church. hand chimes. The funding for the hand chimes came from a memorial fund. They do not perform a full three-octave set due to their small number. “We don’t have enough members for a threeoctave set or a large enough rehearsal area,” said Hunt. “But we do well and we have some great folks.” Central Christian Church hand bell choir starts rehearsals at the end of September and does its last performance on Mother’s Day. “I think when you have music in the service, it’s another way to worship,” said Hunt. “Most choices of music I choose, most people know and I feel they can be part of the music and remember some of the words. Music is just another element in the worship service. We do our best with it and help it to be uplifting.” Not only do hand bells bring joy to congregations in churches, but also to people in nursing homes or school districts if the choir decides to take their show on the road. That’s exactly what the Joybelles did, which was a group of women hand bell ringers at the Presbyterian Church. Although they are no longer active, the group lasted for 25 years and was directed by Margaret McDowell and they used to take their show to area schools and nursing home as their husbands would help transport their equipment to each location. Although that particular group has disbanded, there are currently two hand bell choirs at the

loft window walled up. Later, the basement of the church was renovated into a fellowship hall with new walls, carpeting, a bathroom, and classrooms. In 1992, new bathrooms were also added to the main floor so that people would not have to walk downstairs to use the facilities. “Over the years, people have been very generous with their memorial gifts,” said Hudson. “They have given lovingly to something that will improve the function of the church building and the congregation.” Accommodating parishioners of special needs and the elderly was not something the builders thought about in 1916. That is why in the early 1980s, the church installed a small elevator on the main floor so that parishioners who couldn’t go up and down the stairs easily could still enjoy activities not on the main level. “Our church as a congregation has looked at the needs they have and how we can make it easier for people to come and worship here,” said Hudson. Today, the church has a passion for ministry work and donates clothing for the elementary schools, the angel tree, Women of Witness, and Salvation Army. They also have a community meal the fourth Thursday of each month and serve approximately 150 – 175 meals. They have also been a drop-off site for Operation Christmas Child for 15 years. The church is always open to new members and to people in the community who do not have a home church. “This is like a home here and it continues to be like that,” said Jayna Sturtz, a newer member of the church. “I have always felt invited and welcomed here. the Calvary Methodist Church brought its congregation and pastor to the Park Avenue United Brethren Church and became known as Park United Methodist Church. The building’s roots go back deeper than that to the year 1916 when the United Brethren Company formed a charter on June 17, 1916 for the church. One hundred years later, the current congregation has been gathering up artifacts for the church to display in the sanctuary in honor of the celebration. “We felt it was really important to honor our congregation now and the whole focus that we’ve been a place of worship for 100 years,” said member Cathy Hudson. “We wanted to do something special to observe the fact that we’ve been worshipping God here for 100 years.” Linda Bookless, who is the organist for the church, has a family connection to the merging of the two churches. Her father refurbished a table that was to be thrown out and gave it to the church as a gift when the two churches came together. That table is still displayed at the front of the sanctuary and the church is using it this year as an anniversary table to display artifacts. When the two congregations united, more room was needed in the sanctuary to accommodate more parishioners. A wall in the middle of the sanctuary, that was once used to divide the congregation from a small Sunday School classroom, was raised each Sunday to allow for more space. Eventually, the wall was raised permanently and more pews were added in that section of the sanctuary. The wall hasn’t been the only renovation done to the church. In the early 1960s, before the merger of the two churches, the sanctuary was completely remodeled with new title flooring, new carpet, a modern alter, and having the choir

COSHOCTON – A group of volunteers who believe in life have been working together to help pregnant women in stressful situations. The Pregnancy Distress Center is located at 819 Main St. in a red brick house next to the Sacred Heart Church office. It offers free maternity and baby clothes up to age 2, and other baby items to moms and expecting moms and is open from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays or by appointment. “We had a Right to Life group, but we realized it wasn’t right to tell people what to do if we couldn’t help them not have an abortion,” said Sally Ellis. The Right to Life group Ellis was part of has faded away, but the Pregnancy Distress Center has been going on strong for 26 years. “We moved into the house next to the (church) office in 2011 and it’s been a real good thing for us,” Ellis said. “It’s more private. People can see it and we can explain easier to them how to get here. We also can keep our cribs in the garage out back. We’ve had amazing support from people in the community who donate things to us.” When the Pregnancy Distress Center first got started, Ellis said they used to provide a lot of pregnancy tests to women, but now most of their

New moms are presented with a layette that includes several brand new items such as blankets, onesies and then the center has used/donated outfits, jackets, snow suits, blankets and other clothing items that they can select from. WEST LAFAYETTE – In the mid-1930s, three nurses met to pray for their patients and their peers at a Children’s Hospital in Chicago. From that simple act, the Nurses Christian Fellowship was formed with a purpose to encourage nurses to give spiritual care to their patients and to pray for the nursing profession. In the early 2000s, a member of the national organization encouraged local nurses to form a chapter of the Nurses Christian Fellowship in the county. By word of mouth, the organization grew and now meets monthly at the West Lafayette United Methodist Church. “One of our missions is to bring Christ to nursing,” said Marian Murphy, a member of the group. “One thing we do is pray for nurses and pray for each other. We encourage other nurses to give spiritual care and discuss how to teach spiritual care to young nurses and give spiritual care especially to nurses who are not in a faithbased hospital.” The group of approximately 10 women meet to not only pray for each other and the nursing profession, but to talk about the challenges and rewards of nursing. “Our goal is to have a fellowship to share things and integrate Christianity into nursing,” said Amy Kubala, a member of the group. “It’s helpful to communicate with one another and to encourage one another.”

HISTORY LESSON The Coshocton Christian School sometimes uses guest speakers to bring lessons alive.

That was the case on March 10 when Ed Chapdelaine came to share about the life of Civil War soldiers. He began his presentation dressed as an officer and ended it in the uniform of an average enlisted soldier. Chapdelaine also brought Civil War era weapons to show the students. “The primary weapon of a soldier then was a rifle musket,” he said. “It could accurately hit someone 300 to 400 yards away.” Chapdelaine also explained to the students how bayonets were put on the rifles and how they were loaded. We all held hands and prayed together. It was wonderful.” Even if a nurse can’t pray with a patient, they can still be there in their time of need to offer comfort. “We’ve all been there,” said Kubala. “We’ve all reached out to hold someone’s hand when they’ve been frightened.” Praying doesn’t have to happen only at the patient’s bedside. Because of the demanding nursing career, a lot of praying is done after the nurse is done for the day. “I know I did a lot of silent praying, especially after I got home,” said Waunita Stoecker, a member of the group. For most nurses, choosing to go into the profession is not necessarily a choice, but a calling they feel, sometimes early in life. “For a lot of us, it was a calling,” said Shirley Stewart, a member of the group. “I knew in second grade I didn’t want to be anything else other than a nurse.” The Nurses Christian Fellowship is open to any RN, LPN, or allied health professional. BEACON PHOTO BY JOSIE SELLERS CONESVILLE – The congregation at Conesville United Methodist Church wanted to do something to help the community, but didn’t know what until they were inspired by a child’s comment. “Polly Maple teaches in Warsaw and one of her students said they didn’t have food for the rest of the month and it was only the third week of the month,” said Marilyn Fuller, who attends Conesville UMC. “After that we thought we would start helping people the third week of the month to get them through another week before their food stamps and things kick in.” Fuller and Maple coordinate the church’s Helping Hands program, which gives away food and miscellaneous items to people in need from 6 to 7 p.m. the third Thursday of each month. “We aren’t big like the Salvation Army or New Life Ministries,” Fuller said. “We don’t work with

family. You just know that you’ll have somebody and they’ll be with you for everything, ups and downs, joys and sorrows.” Hudson has been attending Park Church all of her life. “I don’t know for sure, but I think my grandparents were probably some of the earliest people to worship here,” she said. “I took my first steps in the nursery, and I met and married my husband here who came from the Methodist congregation in 1968. Our kids took some of their first steps in the nursery. It’s kind of come full circle.” Rev. Jeremy Roseberry, who has been pastoring the church for four years, also believes that the church has been welcoming. “It’s been a very loving congregation,” he said. “They’ve been like an extended family to us. They’ve taken us under their wings and been very loving and supportive.” Hudson said she believes the church has been very blessed over the years. “The church has been blessed with the people and the congregation,” said Hudson. “We’ve tried to keep up with this building to make it accessible and showing God’s love to people. We’ve become the servants of keeping this building going.” BETH@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

a food bank. We just ask church members to donate something different each Sunday. We are just a small church, but our congregation is fantastic. We break down the Sundays and tell them what we need and only ask for one item (each week). Polly and I then go out and buy what we need to finish packing bags.” Maple is thankful for their help. “We did get a grant for 2016 from our district, but this is mostly all from the congregation,” she said. Helping Hands volunteers pre-pack two sets of grocery bags that include a variety of items such as cans of soups and vegetables, pancake mix and syrup, peanut butter and macaroni and cheese. Each set is different and those who come to Helping Hands select which one they want. They also get a few extras at times such as bread, fresh eggs, bacon, toilet paper, deodorant, laundry detergent and other personal care items. “Our idea is not to feed them for the whole month” Fuller said. Their goal is just to help get them through the last week of the month. “It’s more of a survival bag to get them through that fourth week,” Maple said. Helping Hands serves between 20 and 30 families each month who come from Conesville and surrounding areas. “Everyone is so appreciative,” Fuller said. “We ask them to sign in, but don’t ask for wages. That’s not our concern. We are just there to help.” Helping Hands started almost two years ago and Fuller said they have tweaked the program over time. “We’ve tried to find out what people like and did a survey to see if they wanted to pick items out or have us just do the bags,” she said. “We were surprised, but most people just wanted the bags. They didn’t care about picking things out. They were just grateful for what they had. They didn’t really care what was in the bags. We even had a lady come in last time and say she had gotten a job and that if she didn’t need the help next month she wouldn’t be here. We’ve found that if they don’t really need it they don’t come back and get it.” Another nice part of the project is that organizers find ways for the youth of the church to help out and it’s even caught the attention of young people outside of the church. Brett Kinzel, an eighth grader at River View Junior High, wrote an essay before Christmas that earned her the opportunity to receive $50 to help the community with. She decided to donate her money to Helping Hands and attended the February giveaway to volunteer her time and learn more about the project. “I have family members that go here and thought this was a quick way to help,” she said. “It feels great to do this and I’m very happy to help.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

“That conversation really impacted me,” said Els. “Just to see how the Lord was working through her.” Another memory Els holds in her heart from her time overseas is when she was invited to go out to Gabba Gabba, a local village, for a mother’s retreat. “We hopped on to a dingy with 15 other mothers at about 11:00 at night and we were riding as the tide came in and I looked up and it looked like a painting of the stars,” said Els. “The women were laughing and singing, and they made me sit in the middle so I didn’t fall overboard. I remember there were these glowin-the-dark prawns in the water and they had a flashlight to see the land and there were thousands of silver fish jumping into the light. It was one of those moments like, this is one I’ll never forget. It gave me chills. That night, we slept under the coconut trees and woke up before sunrise and sang worship songs as the sun came up.” One thing Els learned during her mission trip is to appreciate the little things in life. “They find joy in the little things and find hope in the things we would just roll our eyes at,” she said. “Family is a priority and they are really invested in their family and home life.” Just as she got to experience Papua New Guinea, one of the staff members was able to come to Coshocton during Christmas last year to visit with Els and her family and see the United States. me about patience and believing that God is good and has a plan in every little circumstance,” said Els. “It taught me about being grateful for the moments when you’re waiting, like if you’re waiting on the bus or one of the staff members maybe overslept and you’re waiting on them, and knowing that God wants to use those moments.” Els lived in a compound guarded by the church for safety. The two women had to have an escort wherever they went. Their mission was to train new staff members and redevelop staff training to be leaders for CRU students on campus at the University of Papua New Guinea, the largest university in the country. The largest difference Els noticed between Papua New Guinea and the United States is that they are a relationship-based culture whereas we are a culture too focused on time and tasks. “Everything they do revolved around people, not tasks and appointments,” said Els. “If you’re on your way to work and you see your brother, it’s acceptable to spend the day with your brother and not go to work. They value relationships that much, which is incredible to look at and use the Gospel to see how Jesus uses relationships in His teachings.” Another difference is the lack of availability of food, technology, and transportation. But what is lacking in modern conveniences is more than

made up for in their spirituality. “Spirituality is another big thing over there,” said Els. “Most people claim to be a Christian, but a lot of people don’t know Jesus as their Savior. They say they’re a Christian because of their heritage. There are a lot of churches and it’s easy to talk to people about Jesus over there. You can sit down beside someone on the bus and ask them if they know Jesus. They’ll either say yes or no tell me more. They’re very open to hearing the Gospel and talking about God.” Els said there was only one time when she felt threatened. She was walking to see Parliament with an escort from the church and when they were almost to the building, a group of people surrounded them and wouldn’t let them go any further. “They were actually protecting us,” said Els. “They knew that if we went further, that was a bad part of town. It was a very humbling experience, and I don’t want to think of what might have happened if they hadn’t stopped us.” Now that Els is back home, two distinct memories from her time in Papua New Guinea stick out in her mind. One memory was a conversation she had with a girl named Lydia who had recently accepted the Lord into her life. She had started her own Bible Study and reached out to her friends. Els challenged her to join a leadership group, but one of the requirements was that she must disciple others. Lydia didn’t think she could disciple others, but Els pointed out that is what she had been doing all along.
