Remember when…at the coshocton county Fair
By BeTh ScoTT through the fair.” Sharon Thomas was an active member of 4-H and now, has passed that love down to her 7-year-old grandson. “I remember as a grade school child we would always get a ticket to go to the fair and I also remember being in 4-H and setting up our 4-H booth. I was with Keene Hill and Valley Girls at the time and that was always a really fun thing. “Also, we didn’t buy the fair food,” she said. “We would take a picnic lunch and then we would meet at a certain time and we would go spread out a tablecloth and my grandmother would open up our picnic basket and we would have our lunch that way.” In 4-H, Thomas had quite an impressive array of projects she had done. “I did everything from flower gardening to cooking to sewing to making cinnamon rolls, breads, all of that. The one thing I could not do, and that was making pie crust. Could not make a pie crust for any reason. No way. Thomas remembers a lot about 4-H and the fair, having many fond memories with both. But what she remembers most is the many ribbons she won at the fair for her 4-H projects. She was also the state dairy winner and received a watch through the Carnation Company. “I’m very much a fan of 4-H,” she said. “I am a very strong promoter of 4-H. It teaches them (the youth) how to get along with each other. It also teaches them to work on a project and stay at it. My advisors were the greatest in the world,” she said. “Lola Endsley was in charge of our cooking, and my sewing advisor was Olive Martin. They were wonderful, and Olive made me tear out so many stitches because you had to get it just right, but I remember it to this day.” Thomas also hand-made all of her clothes while in high school. The fair holds many memories for the people of Coshocton County. Whether it’s getting a chance to ride on the Ferris wheel, sampling some of the fine fair food, or just being able to spend time with family and friends, the fair holds special memories for any long-time resident of the county. Here are a few stories from the generous people at the Coshocton County Senior Center. Nancy Buehler and her family went to the fair once a year. She remembers, “It was great to get to ride on the rides because we didn’t have anything like that, you know.” She said she remembers the fair was all about having fun. “We rode on the merry-go-round and the Ferris wheel, looked at the animals and just visited with people. It was great. Back in the 30s, you didn’t buy any food at the fair, you took it a picnic, and people that you knew could eat with you. It was 10 cents to rides on things, so $1 went a good ways.” Diana Caton remembers playing in the band every year at the fair when she was in high school. “When I was in high school, the Coshocton High School band used to go out,” she said. “I was in the band, and we looked forward to going out there. It could be beautiful weather and every time we would go out, it would either be snowing or muddy or rainy. We’d go slushing through the rain and we had the best time. We just had a great time. I was out there (at the fair) probably about every other day. She said she remembers, “The number of people that went, the games, they had so many different games. I don’t know, just the camaraderie. You’d see people at the fair that you didn’t see all year. I still do. I see people at the fair here in Coshocton that I never see the whole rest of the year, which is kind of neat. I miss some of the grandstand shows. They used to have some pretty big-name people come in. I just kind of miss that. But people can’t afford to go anymore. You have to cut back on some things, but I still enjoy the fair. I go out and get something to eat and walk

Rorey’s fans compare his sound to a blend of the traditional artistry of Merle Haggard and George Strait. He also has a modern appeal to his country roots such as Brad Paisley. However, Rorey stands alone with a distinct voice all his own. He has become a triple threat to the music industry. His singing captures the audience with a raw passion and as a songwriter he can grab their hearts with a single verse. He leaves the crowd in wonderment as he runs up and down the neck of his six- string. Working with some of the best musicians, song- writers and management teams in Nashville only makes him that much more versatile. It is not much of a surprise he lives for country music, it has always been a part of his life. Rorey spent most of his younger years listening to family members from both his mother and father’s side of the family play. He had the honor of playing guitar for Johnny Paycheck at the tender age of thirteen. When he turned 19 he went out on the road with dynamic country star Danielle Peck, opening up for bigger acts at area fairs and touring the east coast. Rorey then decided to venture out on his own. He came to love being the center stage attraction

She said the fair has improved, but she didn’t really care for the fair the first time she went. “The first time I went to the fair was just after my husband and I were married in 1953. I’m from West Virginia, so I didn’t know anything about the fair. His family always went early in the morning till the dark of night and took picnic baskets and all that. I left down there and I looked at my husband and I said, ‘The next time, we drive our own car. This is not my cup of tea.’ However, the fair has grown on her, although she doesn’t stay all day anymore, “I’ve entered in the fair now for several years. One year I entered 12 entries and got 13 ribbons. I got the Best of Show, but I enjoy doing it. I enjoy the fair now. Of course, I can come and go as I please.” Marjorie Lower said she goes to the fair each year mainly to sample the waffles. “I like the fair because I like the waffles. I go for waffles. When I help the Senior Center, my main thing is I’ve got to have time to go out and get me some waffles because that’s one of my favorites.” When asked if the fair has improved, she replied, “Well, I think it’s always been pretty good. I think most people that went over the years enjoyed it, so I think it’s a good fair.”

many years. Throughout Albert’s 26 years on the Fair Board, he said that it’s definitely a year-round job. The Board meets once a month to discuss problems and get the grounds ready for the next fair, which includes repainting buildings, replacing roofs, and making sure everything is up to code by the next October. Even planting and harvesting produce for the next fair is a full-time job and begins in early spring, which is Albert’s main passion. “With agriculture, people have to eat, don’t they?” he said. “A lot of people don’t know where the stuff comes from. Your oats and your wheat and your corn, everything comes from a farm, from somebody.” In addition to working on the Fair Board, Albert is also a member of the Warsaw Lion’s Club, Walhonding Valley Grange, and has been with the Dutch Run Church for many years.

For Albert Young and his wife Martha, agriculture and showing at county fairs is in their blood. Their family has been involved with the Coshocton County Fair for many years, as Martha’s father was a member of the Fair Board. Their passion for county fairs has continued today as Albert has served on the Fair Board for 26 years and neither one has missed a county fair since they were married. They have even passed their love for planting and harvesting on to their two sons, Butch and Wayne. Both plant and harvest apples, potatoes, corn and pumpkins for the fair, and Wayne currently serves on the Fair Board. Albert became a member of the Fair Board in 1985 and has been in charge of the sheep, llamas, and exhibits in the Junior Fair Building in the past. He is currently in charge of the Agriculture Hall and has been since 1992. Both he and Martha commented that they always enjoy seeing people come through the hall to view the exhibits. “It’s just interesting to hear the remarks,” said Martha, “A lot of people come through and say this is their favorite hall or we come to this fair every year just to see this hall, people from out of the county. That’s always good to hear.” She also commented that the Coshocton County Fair always falls at the right time of the year because early October is when the produce is in its prime. They are also thankful that the residents of Coshocton County are willing to do the exhibits every year. “We have a lot of stuff in the hall, but it takes a lot of people, a lot of exhibitors, that are willing to take the time and bring this stuff and put it up and do it,” Martha said, “They help make the show… We have a lot of outstanding farmers in Coshocton County, we think, and they grow really good corn and things like that.” Martha said she enjoys seeing the young kids show some of their produce at the fair, as it helps them gain some exposure in showing and is educational. She also has worked with the kids at the Livestock Sale for

Brandon Bowles, son of Karen Bowles, is a 12 year member of 4-H Millcreek Valley Club and has shown Dairy Cattle. He attends West Holmes High School where he is involved with FFA and is a Junior Fairboard member and member of Junior Leadership in Coshocton County. Brandon attends Clark Township Baptist Church. He is the President and Safety leader of his 4-H club and is the Chapter’s Sentinel in his FFA chapter. Bowles is also involved in the 4-H Shooting Sports Program, Dairy Judging for 4-H and FFA, Soil judging, tractor trouble shooting, and general Livestock judging for FFA.
Seth Finton, son of Steven and Andrea Finton, is a Ridgewood FFA member. He attends River View High School and is a member of New Castle/Nellie United Methodist Church, Junior Fair Board member (2 years), River View varsity baseball, Summer/Fall Baseball River View, has worked the Annual GAR Bean Dinner (4 years), attends services at Dennis Church, Kokosing Valley Coon Club, Environmental Leader – Treasure, several Fall & Spring Judging Teams – FFA, Parliamentary Procedures team (2 years) FFA, Greenhand and Chapter Farmer FFA Awards, Leadership award FFA, FFA fruit sales, helped with FFA awards banquet, helped with sheep for First Friday, 4th grade ag day at Fairgrounds, decorate graves of Military for Memorial Day, shows sheep at three local fairs in open class and 4-H, earning several trophies. The Pomerene Center for the Arts will be at the fair working on a collaborative sci-fi graphic novel with fairgoers. The story, STARS END, was written by Ivan Payne, a Rocktenn Security Guard. Payne created the entire alternate STARS END world in his head while drawing pen and ink sci-fi spacecraft. All fairgoers of all ages are invited to the Pomerene Booth in Commercial Building # 2 to draw the people, aliens and environments populating the story. Throughout fair week, individual drawings will be collaged together to build the book strip by strip. The finished graphics will hung as an exhibit at the Pomerene Center for the Arts throughout October. The STARS END project is sponsored by The Novelty Advertising Co.

Basket auction
The Relay for Life Coshocton County 7th annual basket silent auction will be located in the Commercial Arts building during the week of the fair. Relay For Life Teams have put together themed baskets for the community to bid on enabling the teams to get a head start of their fundraising. Baskets contain items that fit a certain theme and this year, they have Ohio State, Garden, Cancer Awareness, Fall/Apple Butter, and others. There will be approximately 14 baskets on site for everyone to view and bid on. The highest bidder will be notified on Wednesday evening and arrangements will be made at that time for them to receive and enjoy. Everyone is welcome to check back often and up their bid. One of the teams is taking pre-orders for an upcoming cookbook, so stop by to pick up the information. On hand will be a variety of cancer awareness pamphlets and American Cancer Society information. As always, they will have a TV setup so that prior year relays can be viewed as well as a listing of the Luminaria and the Memorial Tribute. If you are thinking of starting a team to participate in the 2012 Relay For Life, there will be information for you to take home. Survivors are welcome to stop by and put their name on their Cancer Survivor List. The spring 2012 Survivor Banquet plans are underway! There are also 2011 Daffodil Bears available if you missed yours. Monies raised during this event go to the teams and then on to the American Cancer Society. Hope to see you at the fair!

As in past years during the county fair, the city will return Kenilworth Avenue, between 7th and 8th Streets, to one-way traffic beginning Monday, Sept. 26 through Thursday, Oct. 6. Traffic may only travel east on Kenilworth between 7th and 8th during that time period. “NO PARKING” signs will be erected to prohibit parking on that section of Kenilworth during the actual fair dates Sept. 30 – Oct. 6. This no-parking ban is to ease the flow of traffic of the big trucks hauling tractors, entertainment crews, etc., as they negotiate Kenilworth Avenue and make the turn into the 8th Street gate at the fairgrounds. Traffic going north on 7th Street from Bank Street or Otsego Avenue will not be allowed to go through to the main Fair entrance. Traffic will be detoured west on Ash Street during the week of the fair.
